Road Trip Narrative Essay
When i was in 6th grade my family and I lived in Gainesville, Missouri and my grandparents
wanted to take us on a road trip, so I had to save up two hundred dollars because me and my
sisters were going on a road trip to Monroe, Louisiana with our grandparents. I remember my
grandparents giving my sisters and I a piggy bank that counts our money so everytime we would
but money in it would tell us our balance. I can remember how excited we were about them we
would just take our money out and reset the piggy bank and put all of our money in them and
watch the numbers go up. When the trip was a couple months away my grandparents got scammed
and the scammers took 2,000 dollars it was devastating because we had to wait to go on the trip so
they could get more money. When there was 2 days till we left we all was very excited and all
were packing up our clothes into bags and suit cases. We packed our snakes and charged up our
tablets so we would be ready. I can remember how hard it was to fall asleep that night, it was like I
drinked 10 cups of coffee because how excited we were. The morning had finally came we all woke
up very early sowe would have everything ready to pack into the car and not leave anything behind.
We were all waiting for my grandparents to show up and pick us up so the road trip could begin.
When they finally arrived we all helped loading the car and off we were. The road trip was very
excited we saw things that we haven t seen before, in fact it was the

Comparing Tradition and Change in Amy Tan s The Kitchen...
Tradition and Change in The Kitchen God s Wife and The Joy Luck Club
Throughout the novels The Kitchen God s Wife and The Joy Luck Club, author Amy Tan conveys
the message of tradition and change. Each novel contains sections about mothers talking and
relating their stories to their daughters. The daughters in The Joy Luck Club hear stories about loss
and happiness, and joy and hate. Each of the four mothers tell these stories to their daughters as
lessons, or offerings for their futures. They tell the stories to show how lucky their daughters have
been, yet how their lives will never be the same as their own lives have been. They try to help their
daughters on some level with these stories. Yet they comprehend the... Show more content on

Yet, with even more consistency, she will view her mother with irritancy or sadness. On the
surface, Winnie s ways are more irritating than mysterious to the daughter. (Yglesias) Even in the
first sentence the reader lays eyes on, Pearl demonstrates these grievances she harbors,
Whenever my mother talks to me, she begins the conversation as if we were already in the
middle of an argument. (Tan, 3) and further in her segments of the novel, she indicates quite a
few problems she has with her mother. Similarly, Tan also has these problems with her mother
Tan felt that she had disappointed her mother when she dropped out of medical school... (Feng) I
secretly worried that I had missed better opportunities. My mother had put those thoughts in my
head. (Tan, 8) To this day, it drives me crazy, listening to her various hypothesis, the way religion,
medicine and superstition all merge with her own beliefs. (Tan, 27) Yet, sadly, Pearl also says that
there s a lot I don t know about my mother. (Tan, 53) Through these silent criticisms of her mother,
Pearl assigns herself a critical perspective on her mother s life. (Yglesias)
The daughters relate to readers that their perceptions of their mother s traditions and culture, even
though those perceptions might be different than the ones the mothers hoped toconvey, have

The debate over individuals and groups
Introduction
The individual and the group, can their ability to either coexist or be at odds with each other? As
in many famous or popular novels and films of out time, the individuals and the groups are
considered as the forefront of each story. No matter what types they are, the individuals and the
groups is more or less represented in those literary works. In most cases, those books and films will
present the conflict between the individuals and the groups. The appearance of the conflict between
the individuals and the groups is on the background of times and is the requirement of certain
history period. Without this conflict, stories ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When every character in this novel uses more pronouns referring to oneself, the individual character
will apply the first person plural we , rather than the singular I . Utilizing words in this way is
easily let me get confused at the beginning when I was reading. However, related to the opinions
about the relationship between the individuals and the groups getting themselves expressed in the
book make the subject of the theme clear to me eventually.
Anthem draws heavily on the historical record of twentieth century. The collectivist society
described in the book is called Equality 7 2521. This collectivist society is the place where is
similar to the Nazi. This society makes lots of restrictions that forbid people to have their
individually thoughts. Moreover, people are forbidden to think freely. All of them have to act in
unquestioning obedience to the orders of the society.
The author of Anthem addresses that collectivism refers to the subjugation of the individual to
the group . And it is not necessary to understand what the group is. It could be a certain class, a
race or country and so forth. In this context, each people are not considered as an autonomous
individual with his or her own life. Instead, they are treated as a component of the group whose
sole purpose is to obey and serve this group.
The notion of individuals and groups in Richard III
Richard III is one of the most famous plays written by William Shakespeare. It is well

Crime Scene Pulp Fiction
Humberto Guitron Professor David Cowper English 201 24 April 2015 Pulp Fiction Diner Scene
In the film Pulp Fiction by director Quentin Tarantino, audience members are immersed in a
reality shown from a career criminal s point of view. Only after watching the various behaviors of
the main characters in both their work and social settings can viewers fully comprehend the
complexity of Tarantino s characters. If one hasn t watched the whole movie through, one could
probably assume that Jules is the heartless and impulsive epitome of the typical thug. We see this
merciless killer execute a guy just to intimidate and get inside the head of some other dude for
falling short on a business arrangement with Jules s boss, the notorious Marsellus... Show more

With slow cuts as well as the blockage in the scene, the film brings all eyes to Jules as he
delivers his speech. The exchange of words, references from literary works, and slow cutting
present in the diner all cooperate to challenge the viewer s stereotypes with respect to Jules. If it
weren t for this scene people might still argue that the character Jules didn t evolve at all and it
might be true. Despite that this scene locks Jules s position as a progressive character and leaves
everyone without doubt that the stereotype of the typical gunman has been crumbled. Pulp
Fiction s intellectual choice of words takes hold of our interest while simultaneously making us
feel as if we were there. Jules s words of wisdom respecting Ezekiel 25:17 were emphasized by all
the incorporation of slow cut scenes. Adding Ringo s blurry noggin, the viewer was always face
to face with Jules eyes as if he could stare right into your soul. This in turn creates a disturbingly
hypnotic aspect to this legendary

The Need to Measure Transit System Performance
The necessity to measure transit system performance along with its different dimensions has led to
the development of a large number of quantitative performance indicators. Nevertheless, depending
upon the specific indicator assessed, one can reach to different conclusions regarding performance.
Furthermore, though performance and scale economies are closely related issues, they have been
generally examined separately in the transit literature. There have been significant amounts of
research undertaken in order to examine the transit system performance, and in turn of assessing
the performance based on such methods but the two characteristics underline the work. First, due
to heterogeneity in getting different relationships between efficiency and effectiveness, system
performance, existence of scale of economies and various such issues, the conclusion which
have come out of different studies is not same. In other words there are conflicting conclusions.
Even researchers are not using the data which is provided by NTD (National Transit Data base)
and as a result the comparability of findings across researches is questionable. A second problem
arises because researches have been using cross section time series data from largely
heterogeneous systems and have introduced a size related bias in their results (Berechman, 1993).
Tomazinis (1977) specified a set of indicators in order to measure the public transit systems s
performance. His measurement was built on three bases;

Nat Hocken
Synopsis The story begins on the third day of December, after the wind changed overnight and
brought winter with it. Nat Hocken, the protagonist, who because of a war time disability, had a
pension and did not work full time at the farm (Maurier 1). Nat used to watch the birds on the
cliff s edge during midday. But that fall, he had noticed something different in the birds; there
were more birds than usual and they were restless, maybe because they sensed that the winter was
going to be a hard one. That night, Nat hears a tapping on the window and goes to inquire, and a
bird tries to get inside grazing his knuckles in the process but flies away soon. Sometime later, the
tapping starts again, but this time more insistent. He goes to the window to check for a second time

the plane crashes out into the sea. The birds break in in one of the bedrooms and heaps of

birds attack when the tides turn. As the tapping and the rasping sounds at the window ceases, the
family goes to the farm for supplies. The land birds do not attack, but sit on the trees, waiting and
watching. At the farm, Nat finds the dead bodies of Jim, Mr. and Mrs. Trigg. He collects food,
fuel and all the necessities and leaves for his house with his family. He starts working on the doors,
windows and the chimney preparing for the next attack. When he looks out to the sea, he realizes
that the tide has turned again and the gulls have started rising. He barricades the door and goes
inside the kitchen. The attack starts again and the story ends with Nat smoking his last cigarette,
throwing the empty pack in the chimney fire and watching it

Harley Davidson
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Harley Davidson is the largest market share holder of motorcycles over
750cc in the United
States. After the expansion of our production and distribution capacity, we will be in the position to
meet the increasing demand for our motorcycles and other products. Growth potential appears very
good especially in the overseas market. Gaining a larger market share in these area may require a
further increase in production and distribution capacities. We must plan for expansion now and
continue to grow as a company.

Sales of Buell motorcycles (which are distributed through select Harley Davidson dealers) increased
to $14 million in 1995 as compared to $6 million in 1994. The Company began 1995 at a
scheduled motorcycle production rate of 395 units per day. As the implementation of the
manufacturing strategy continued, the rate increased to 470 units per day by the end of the year.
The Company exceeded its production goal of 100,000 units in 1995 and anticipates 1996
production will reach at least 115,000 units.
The Company is currently reviewing alternative sites for the construction of a new manufacturing
facility to enable it to achieve its long term goal of doubling motorcycle production by 2003. Year
end data indicates that the domestic (United States) motorcycle market continued to grow
throughout 1995.
Compared to 1994, industry registrations of domestic heavyweight (engine displacements in
excess of 751cc) motorcycles were up 11.3% . The Company ended 1995 with a domestic market
share of 55.8% compared to 56.1% in 1994. This decrease is a reflection of the Company s
constrained production capacity in a growing heavyweight motorcycle market. Demand for the
Company s motorcycles continues to exceed supply with nearly all of the Company s independent
domestic dealers reporting retail orders on all of their remaining 1996 model year motorcycle
allocations (production through June, 1996). Export revenues totaled $394.8 million during

Comparing the Personalities of the Writers, Dante and Chaucer
Even though Dante and Chaucer never met, Dante having died 19 years before Chaucer was
born, Dante inadvertently became Chaucer s life long mentor. Dante s severe spirit turned out to
be far more harsh than Chaucer s nature, however Dante s protГ©gГ©, Boccaccio, became one
of Chaucer s greatest inspirations. Looking back at both Dante and Chaucer s works, experts now
see striking similarities in their writing. Whether Chaucer ever meant to use Dante s materials or
not, he is now closely compared with his contrary counter part. The original purpose of this paper
was to tell how closely related Chaucer s writing was to Dante s, however, a closer look at the man,
the better the picture is that shows the blatant contrasts between these two... Show more content on

These experiences made Dante quickly realize that this world is corrupt to the core. Greed for
material things is the main fault, greed which is allowed to dictate the actions of men. Only a
cessation of strife, the establishment of universal peace can ensure the happiness of mankind
and allow men to pursue the ultimate aim for which God has destined them on earth, that of
exercising constantly and to the full their distinctive quality, the Virtus Intellective (virtuous
intellect) (Limentani,117). He believed that life on this earth was for a purpose and had
meaning to it this can be seen in the Inferno because Dante is working to make his journey
purposeful. He travels so far and tries so hard to work his way up to heaven. Chaucer stands in
contrast to Dante s almost dogmatic piety and looks to other things as purposeful in his life.
Chaucer s views of life come from a very political point of view. He was introduced to court life
while still in his teens, becoming a page to one of the kings daughter in laws. From there he rose
in status until he was promoted to the rank of esquire. Though he was exposed to political plots
and war Chaucer exhibit s a lust and compassion for life that completely eludes Dante s works.
While he was easy going and generally sympathetic to others Chaucer was nothing of a typical
idealist. While Dante searched for ways to better the world by destroying chaotic war and hate,
Chaucer was content to let the world

Critical Analysis Of Star Wars

Critical Analysis of Star Wars Released in 1977, the original Star Wars movie quickly became
the highest grossing film of all time and it changed the way people thought of filmography. With
its unique special effects and storyline, it created a new era of Hollywood movies. It became a
huge blockbuster and eventually spawned a new universe that now spans several decades. The
films, now numbering six with three more being made, have a fan base of millions of people. In
order for a film (series) to have that large of a fan base, the fans must be able to relate to the film.

This enables the dominant race to grant privileges to some while at the expense of others.
Entrance into this group is usually exclusive to one type of person (Kendall). In totalitarian and
dictatorial instances, such as in Star Wars, the line between the group in power and all others is
bold and easy to see. Those who are not members of the group in power are subject to
discrimination and have fewer rights and privileges in his or her society. The Star Wars films
provide both symbolic and concrete evidence of this racial disparity. George Lucas use of color
throughout the films is essential in the development of the narrative as well as to emphasize the
progression of the racial inequalities and prejudices between humans and aliens. The color
progression from The Phantom Menace to The Return of The Jedi acts as a sort of meter pertaining
to the collapse of the Republic and the rise of the Galactic Empire. The first film chronologically,
The Phantom Menace, employs bright, happy colors to convey hope and life. The vibrant colors
of Naboo, the underwater home of the Gungan s, and the interior of many key buildings are all
made up of colors that are synonymous with (relative) peace and innocence. As the Star Wars
prequels progress to A New Hope, the bright colors are overtaken by greys, blacks, and reds.
The warm color palette is synonymous with democracy, diversity, and

New Right Movement In The 1980 s
The 1980 s
The 80 s as it was referred, was an era that reconstructed the traditional outlook of
Global Society, Economics, and Politics. For many in the United States, this embrace of change
was welcomed with open arms, in hopes to sever any connections to the Reformed and
unconventional movements of the radical 60 s and 70 s. With the end of Jimmy Carter s
Presidential Rule, this was a symbolic close to the chapter of a troubled time. We will now

Problem: Coral Divers Resort is a safe and knowledgeable scuba diving resort with a beach front
location. Over the past three years revenues have declined and Greywell suffered a $5, 174 in
losses in 1994. Coral Divers Resort needs to do something before business gets worse and Jonathan
Greywell and his resortgo out of business.
The first option that Greywell has would be to move Coral Divers Resort to New Providence

would be the large tourist population that gathers there. The island also offers underwater movie

This plan also has weaknesses. A sharkdive would cost $100 for a two tank dive when compared to
a normal two tank dive that would only cost $25 75. Greywell would also have to purchase a
special chain mail suite for the shark feeder at a cost of $10,000. No one on Greywell s staff was
very excited about the shark feeding diving and most of them would have to be replaced. Novice
divers would not be able to take advantage of adventure diving because it requires previous
experience and a high skill level. The other concern associated with adventure diving would be
the safety risks and skill level of younger divers vacationing with their parents. The market for
adventure diving is doing well, but already seems to be saturated with competitors. There would
also be a lack of returning customers because adventure diving would most likely be a one time
experience for most tourists. The third and final option would be for Greywell to pair with
Rascal s, a travel company and target the rapidly growing family market segment. The current
average age of a new diver is 36, and many of them have children. A Rascal s strategy would give
busy parents the option of bringing their children with them on a dive vacation. The Rascal s
option offers many strengths, and promises Coral Divers Resort an increase of 40% for off season
business. Rascal s is well established in the industry that would bring a brand

Nores vs. Greek Essay
Nores vs. Greek
Greek mythology and Roman mythology are almost identical. This is an accepted fact, as it is
widely known that the Romans stole the Greek myths. However, it is very interesting to note that
the mythology of the Vikings (Norse) has many similarities with the Greek myths. These myths
are, by no means, identical to the Greek ones (like the Roman ones are), but there are very distinct
commonalities between the two. I see two possible reasons for this besides pure coincidence.
The first has to do with the fact that Norse myths were codified during the Viking era: 780 1070.
This gives the Norsemen many centuries to become exposed to the Greek (or Roman) myths. The
Vikings did travel as far east as the Caspian sea, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The gods and goddesses are powerful beings capable of super human powers, but nevertheless
are characters fraught with very human frailties and flaws. In this way they created gods that
had similarities with the common man in the society. This made the gods more tangible and
easier to identify with. I think that this was necessary because they were not yet at the societal
maturity level to have a single god on a cosmic plane. Most of the comparisons will be examining
the similarities between major Greek and Norse gods, as well as creatures, stories and specific
symbols which are featured in the mythologies. Some of the gods do not have direct counterparts
(Thor, Athena and Loki). However, I will provide possible similarities within the respective
mythologies.
ASGARD Asgard is sometimes known as Asgarth. It is the realm of the gods and the home of
both the Aesir and Vanir. Is is ruled by Odin, the leader of the Norse deities. It is located in the
heavens, but is connected to earth by a bridge, known as Bifrost, sometimes referred to as a
rainbow. There is also a route from Asgard to the underworld, the domain of Hel. Valhalla, a hall
within Asgard, was the palace for fallen kings, warriors who had died in battle and heroes.
MT. OLYMPUS Mount Olympus was the home of the Greek gods. It was chosen as their home
because of its altitude, for Zeus, the king of the gods, was associated with the sky. Within the
mythology, Mt. Olympus was large, foreboding

BCAAs can account for 15 to 30% of your total energy during intense workouts. BCAAs also help
with protein synthesis. The most critical time to take BCAAs is around workouts; before, during
and after, this maximizes the benefits of these amino acids. Taking a BCAA supplement before
working out can be great for those that train fasted in the morning. Research has shown that
taking BCAA supplementation can have a fatigue reducing effect allowing you to perform just
as well as you would with a prior intake of food 2 hours before. Taking a BCAA supplement
during training helps reduce fatigue helping you push through more intense longer workouts.
Taking BCAAs post training is great for muscle recovery and repair. The BCAAs help your

The Movie The Forest
The movies. A place where everyone comes to see entertainment on the big screen. Going to the
movies has become very common in American culture. Sometimes though movies can be more
than movies; they become events which can pull you in and make you feel like you are a part of
the movie. No movies do that better than horror movies, which could have you sitting at the
edge of your seat in one minute, then have you cowering back in your seat the next minute. I
experienced a horror movie like that, it pulled me into the movie and made me feel everything
the main character felt. The movie is called The Forest. The movie uses effective scare tactics
such as creepy environment, jump scares, and psychological horror. The Forest is about a
woman going to find her twin sister who got lost in a forest. But it is not just any forest the
sister got lost in, it is the Aokigahara forest in Japan which is also called the suicide forest
because of the high amounts of suicides committed in the forest. The movie is able to utilize the
inherent creepiness in the forest, to keep the movie suspenseful and full of tension. Throughout
the movie the forest is eerily quiet and all you hear is the crunching of twigs under the protagonist
feet or the sound of the wind rustling the branches of the trees. All these sounds keep you at the
edge of your seat, wondering when the first ghost or ghoul will pop out. Since there is no real

Scotland Pros And Cons
For a number of centuries, Highlanders have remained in the Highlands of northern Scotland. This
influential group of inhabitants, imagined bulked together in clans and having wardrobes solely
composed of tartan kilts, have been referenced throughout the recent years in popular literature and
film. These unique culture references, however, may not correctly illustrate the true depiction of
the modern day Highlander. Previously competent in the affairs of war, revolution, and politics,
Highlanders today lead a much more rural and relaxed lifestyle. Once dominated by prominent
towns, clans, and populations, the historical Highlands today contain people scarce and far

Those in support were often called Jacobites, and planning for revolution was done in utmost
secrecy. At the beginning of the revolution, the Highlanders did well defending themselves against
the English brutalities. In the Battle of Prestonpans, Highlanders captured nearly one thousand
English soldiers and wounded hundreds, which gave them Jacobian pride to continue the
revolution (Forty five, 2014). However, all ideals of revolution ended at the Battle of Culloden.
Leading up to the Battle of Culloden (April 16, 1746), the Highlanders hadn t been fed for days
and had little protection or shelter from the harsh Highland weather. Due to the underwhelming

of the English on their way back from Culloden (Magnusson, 2000, p. 617). This, the last pitched

The Influence Of Social Classes In Renaissance Europe
There were three social classes during the renaissance people are to be a part of; citizens, poor
people and government. Your class would be chosen by your job, money, and if you were under
government power. The only job poor people had were working on farms. They were not able to
leave the area that they worked on. They dressed simple, and ate lots of bread and other simple
foods. The poor people had very tiny homes with a maximum of four bedrooms. As long as they
had a roof over their head they were satisfied. Citizens were the ones who weren t farmers, they
had tons of free time and loved telling their friends stories. They had money to eat expensive
foods, and they loved to go on family trips together. They also loved bread and ate tons of bread.
If you were considered a French citizen you ate nothing but tons of soup. The government was
filled with rich people; their houses were small palaces. They would go to bug dinners and eat
tons of food like soups, wines and meats. The most expensive food there was the soups. There
were more than 50 different types of soups. Trading was very good because it lets things like
spices and silk move around. Some very important trading centers were Asia, Florence, and Venice.

not show the children feelings nor emotions. As soon as people started gaining more free time and
money during the renaissance, they began to treat their children differently. Rich people s children

Gap Model Approach Towards Measuring Customer Satisfaction
Introduction This report is based on The Northern Breast Screening Unit (NBSU) and its aim is
to critically evaluate the use of the GAP model approach towards measuring customer
satisfaction. It will further explain the advantages and disadvantages of this tool for managers to
measure service delivery at NBSU. Further, it will assess the quality of the service which is
being provided by NBSU based upon the results of their recent patient satisfaction survey.
Furthermore, it will compare and contrast the different perceptions of the service received by the
two patient groups. It will also explore how the three staff members differ in their understanding of
the patient s priorities and perceptions. Finally, recommendations will be made to NBSU
management to help improve their service quality management. Gap Models A GAP model
approach refers to the following five Gaps of service quality in operations in which a Gap Model is
split. (Parasuraman et al, 1985). Gap number one, positioning, is where the customer s expectations
of the organisation versus what are the management perceptions of these customer expectations.
Gap number two, specification, is when management perceptions of the customer s expectations
versus the design of service specification. Gap number three, delivery, is the service designed for
customers versus the actual service being delivered to the customer. Gap number four,
communication, is the service being delivered versus the service that was

First Battle Of Ypres Essay
The last allied defensive line which stood in the way of the Germans from setting foot on
english territory resided in Ypres, Belgium. This was the last defence against the German army s
race to the sea. The significance of this battle for the allied forces, including the belgian army was
the importance of Ypres as it represented the last significant settlement in belgium before the battle
would have leaked into France, or the Atlantic Ocean. The German army lacked morality as they
annihilated the city of Ypres in the process of counter battery. The social impact for the allied
forces was positive since the battle was a victory, although it was a costly battle for both sides. The
allied forces pushed the German forces farther back into belgium which was problematic and

many. I think that both armies started to understand how the style of warfare used was not very
effective considering the amount of casualties on both sides. I believe that this battle was
important for the war because it was the first real turning point in the war. The allied victory in the

restricted their access to the english channel which is what would let them bring the war to english

Young Women In The Coquette By Eliza Wharton
In Hannah W. Foster s, The Coquette, Eliza Wharton is portrayed as a woman of status, above
average intelligence and education, with a flirtatious nature. Though the author does not cast her in
an antagonistic light, her manner is painted as foolish, flippant to 18th century social conventions,
and lacking in forethought. As such, The Coquette should be viewed as a literary warning for
young women of the day, especially those who may have shared undesirable attributes with Eliza. It
is the novels intent, by way of Eliza s thoughts and actions, to discourage young women from
pursuing a fleeting and non virtuous lifestyle. Through the novel, Foster acts as a moral guide to
young women by persuading them to obey social conventions like entering into dutiful marriage,
refraining from political and public... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In portraying the dichotomy of virtue between Boyer and Sanford, Foster means to convey the
moral sense in courting a chaste man like Boyer, and the great error in pursuing a libertine like
Sanford. It is Foster s intent to show Eliza s carefree indecision as a hindrance to her true
happiness and ultimately as the reason for losing Boyer. Conversely, Peter Sanford acts as a
moral foil to the virtue of Reverend Boyer; he is charming, but manipulative, deceptive, and
rakish. It is the author s intent to portray Major Sanford as the type of man to which women of
inconsistent virtue were likely to be drawn. Eliza is shown as not caring about Sanford s past
indiscretions (and ultimately suffering for it), saying a reformed rake makes the best husband
(Foster, p.49). The social convention of the day was for women to marry quickly and smartly; it is
Foster s intent to illustrate how a woman active in society life and frivolous in her affairs will
ultimately end up being a woman with no

Marie Curie Accomplishments
No one would have expected that a young Polish girl from an impoverished family would have
made such great contributions and become one of the most influential scientists to ever live.
During the 1860 s, society did not expect poor young women to become more than a housewife, let
alone pursue a career in science. However, Marie Curiebroke through these stereotypes and in
doing so, inspired many women to follow in her footsteps. Many would believe that someone
who has gained so much recognition in the scientific community and achieved their lifetime goal
would have a positive outlook in life and a optimistic attitude. However, this was not the case for
Marie Curie, who battled severe depression from an early age. Although Marie Curie found herself
in some dark places, she worked even harder to overcome many societal and personal challenges.
Without Marie Curie s lifetime dedication to science, her discovery of radium and polonium, and
her scientific contributions to radiation, our world would not be the same.

Oral History Of Generational Report On My Mother s Life
This oral history generational report is about my mother, Mary Fremont on her life experiences
and beliefs that guided her in life. To achieve a historical outline of facts and experiences, I
interviewed her in person. The interview took about two hours. As the interviewer, I asked five
simplistic questions that were mostly open ended to provide a dialogue that was not hindered by
content of the question. Furthermore, on several accounts there were in depth follow up questions
to engage in a deeper discussion that will enhance the oral history report timeline.
The beginning of the interview started with a question that would highlight the timeline of my
mother s life. I asked where and when were you born? Mary responded by stating that she was
born in Oakland, California on December 8, 1959. My follow up question was what major events
where happening during the time you were born in Oakland. She indicated that it was a time of
racial conflicts and violence. I asked how long did your family stay in Oakland? She indicated that
by the time of three years old, because of racial issues in the neighborhood and school systems they
felt it was no longer safe for them.
I followed up this comment with a question on how did this racial conflict in her neighborhood
affect her family personally. She indicated that her family lived in a low middle income
neighborhood with a school that was placed on the borderline of her neighborhood and a low
income neighborhood. The school

Plebeian Families
In the early years of Rome, the less wealthy plebeian majority typically worked as farmers on a
patrician estate through a clientage, a social relationship in which wealthy landholders offer
protection and financial aid to lesser citizens in return for political and labor support. The plebeian
families had a small plot of land within the estate that was used simultaneously to provide for the
families and to provide for the landowner.
If not bound by a clientage, plebeians would live within the walls of a city and earn a living by
selling food that they had grown themselves on a small plot of land or run a shop that provided
common amenities to Roman citizens

Soon, Rome became an organized sprawl of paved roads that connected cities and farms. Despite
this it was still cheaper and more efficient to transport goods by sea rather than by river or land.
Sea travel could also be the riskiest, subject to the whims of weather and theft from piracy. It was
restricted by the seasons as the period between November and March was regarded as being too
unpredictable for safe passage.
During the era of Roman Trade a state control had to be sanctioned over trade in order to
guarantee supply. This was called the annona system and it was very strict, enforcing taxation on
all vessels that entered Roman ports, no exceptions. The state taxed the movement of goods
between provinces and also controlled many local markets, even the establishment of a market by
a landowner had to be approved by a member of the Senate.
The Roman military, with its members in the hundred thousands, was the most prominent reason to
maintain trade with other regions. The promise of land to well serving soldiers also facilitated
expanding conquest. In fact, close to seventy percent of all government spending was towards the

will anyone inhabit the world the way he did. Questions I have can never now get answers. The
world is emptier. My son is gone. Only a hole remains, Avoid, a gap, never to be filled (33). This
phrase describes his emotions and how he views the world without his son. The author gives
advice on what to say to someone who is mourning. He says to never say its Ok because its never
okay and death is awful. What I need to hear from you is that you recognize how painful it is. I
need to hear from you that you are with me in my desperation (34). When some passes away no
one really knows what his or her loved ones are feeling because each death is unique and each

happy again, all your left is emptiness. The author feels like something is over and that his life is

The Complexity Of John Wayne In Film
John Wayne (1907 1979), an iconic American actor, director, and producer, known for playing
heroes in westerns on the big screen for fifty years. He won an Academy Award for True Grit
(1969) and is consider one of the top leading actors during Hollywood s classic period. In Red
River, Wayne stars in the unusual role of Thomas Dunson, who borders on good and bad tendencies
throughout the film. Wayne, often typecast, is given a tortured, conflicted character to play (Ebert
392), and does remarkably well portraying someone with questionable values. Wayne is sometimes
considered more of a natural force than an actor, but here his understated acting is right on the
money; the critic Joseph McBride says that John Ford, who had directed Wayne many times, saw
Red River and told Hawks, I never knew the big son of a bitch could act (Ebert 393). Some of
Wayne s best films include Stagecoach (1939), Angel and the Badman (1947), She Wore a

The MLDA also comes into play with why the drinking age should be lowered. Enforcing an
MLDA of 21 is expensive and inefficient. Setting the MLDA at 21 is unconstitutional because it
is discrimination against the particular age group of 18 20 year olds. IT would be more
effective to spend money on educating youth about alcohol than to spend it on enforcement of
drinking laws for 18 20 year olds. The pie chart below shows the proportion of 83 countries
MLDAs from ages 14 to 21. People under the age of 21 see alcohol as a forbidden fruit.
Forbidden fruit is described as, A badge of rebellion against authority and a symbol of
adulthood(Dr. Ruth Engs). If drinking is made legal for people 18 and older, it will seem much
better as the curiosity isn t as high and the fruit isn t forbidden anymore. Responsibility and
tolerance are two major things that should be addressed with lowering the drinking age.
Responsible drinking could be taught through role modeling and educational programs. If the
drinking age were to be lowered, mature and sensible drinking behavior would be expected.

without acceptance of supplies by stores, it does not satisfy the requirement of completing all

Part 1 Concerns that have been addressed
1 b. The hit tapes are now being amortized over a much shorter period В– The costs of non base
stock videocassettes (generally greater than four copies per title for each store i.e. hits ) are
amortized on an accelerated basis over three months to an estimated $4 salvage value.
2. Acquisitions treated as pooling В– All acquisitions were accounted for under the purchase
method and accordingly the operating results of the acquired businesses are included in the
consolidated results of operations of the company since their respective date of acquisition.
3. Critical event for sale of supplies to stores В– BV is using a rental library approach for supplies
for the new stores. Revenue sharing allows BV to purchase videocassettes at a lower product cost
than traditional buying arrangements.
Part 2 Concerns that remain

Banning Consealed Carry
On February 7th, 2007 the most tragic United States mass shooting happened in history. 23 year old
student, Cho picked up a Walther P 22 pistol and killed 32 people at Virginia Tech University in
Blacksburg Virginia. This left the whole nation in shock leaving innocent students fearful , higher
education administration astonished and families mourning the loss of their children. Cho was
found guilty after submitting his own confession video to NBS news along with 28 gruesome
photos and profane language over the murder of innocent students. As everyone in the nation

According to Dr. John R. Lott Jr, world recognized economist, this is not the case at all. Lott holds
a Ph.D in economics from the University of California of Los Angeles has rigorgously decidated to
finding the correlation between violence and guns within the United States. According to this
findings Consealed Carry Permit Holders Across the United States several misconceptions
where cleared in a scienfic manner. First, the number of consealed handgun permits are
increasing each year. Just within the past 2015 year, 1.7 million additional permits were issued.
This has resulted in a 15.4% increase in permits within one calendar year. Where John R. Lott Jr.
makes a distinction in his research center, that although permits are increasing, this does not
neccesarily mean that violence is increasing as well. To the contrary belief violence is
decreasing at a significant rate. Just between the years of 2007 and 2014 murder rates have
fallen to an dismounting rate of 4.2 per 100,000 people. Looking at both variables closely this
has represented a 25% drop in overall murder rate while the percentage of permits have increased
at a rate of 175%. This provides a basis that lets concerned families, verterans and students that the
possession of Firearms is not a direct correlation to violence within

Tony Kushner s Angels in America Essay
Most of the characters in Tony Kushner s Angels in America struggle with their sexuality.
Reflected in this struggle, the homosexual characters are flawed to the degree at which they hide
their sexuality. Prior, Belize, Louis, Joe, and Roy all deal with this issue in the course of the play.
Prior is the least closetedhomosexual while Roy is the most. Prior is chosen to be a prophet, is
morally upright, and represents good. Roy, the unlawful lawyer, represents evil. Belize, Louis, and
Joe fall in between Prior and Roy on the scale. By having these particular characters represent what
they do, Tony Kushner places a negative stigma on those in the closet and emphasizes his negative
opinion on closeted homosexuals.
Prior is one of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Kushner 160) and winks at Roy. Then after Roy says Belize has no reason to want to help him,
Belize says, ?Consider it solidarity. One faggot to another? (Kushner 161). The word faggot is
typically regarded as offensive. Being able to call oneself by something that is considered
offensive generally indicates one?s comfortability level with who one is. Through Belize?s comfort
level with himself, his openness about his sexuality reveals itself.
Because Louis is in a relationship with Prior, one would not think Louis would be considered
uncomfortable with his sexuality or closeted; however, in the first few scenes, the audience sees
Louis hiding his homosexuality from his family. When he and Prior are at Louis?s grandmother?s
funeral, the two talk about how Louis does not like to be open around his family. Louis says,
?Sorry I didn?t introduce you to?.I always get so closety at these family things? (Kushner 25), to
which Prior responds with, ?Butch. You get Butch. ?Hi Cousin Doris, you don?t remember me I?m
Lou, Rachel?s boy.? Lou, not Louis, because if you say Louis they?ll hear the sibilant S? (Kushner
25 26). This conversation proves Louis?s insecurity about his homosexuality when among family
members. Because of this, Louis cannot be considered completely open with his sexuality.
Joe is definitely not comfortable with his homosexuality. His marriage to Harper confirms his
closeted ness. In act two when Joe comes out to Harper, he flat out tells

Gravity And Force Essay
There is gravity everywhere. It gives the shape for the planet orbit and the orbit of the solar system

Forces are in play all around us. Things that is hanging, sitting, balancing, and moving are all
using force. Force can come in many different forms and types. Force is a push or pull. It is not
something that you touch or see but you can see the force in action. Force can be measured in a
device that is called the force meter. If there is an interaction between two object it means that

Dishonests In John Steinbeck s Chrysanthemums
English In the short story, Chrysanthemums by John Steinbeck, there is a certain interesting
character that demonstrates strong traits. The story has three main characters which are Henry, his
wife, Elisa and the tinker. The character that I will talk about would be the uneducated and canny
salesman, the tinker. The Tinker is the antagonist of the story who uses his tricks and sweet talk to
get through this hardworking farmer called Elisa Allen for his personal benefits. The story revolves
around the interaction between Elisa and the Tinker and how he betrays her. From this short
summary, you can tell what type of person the Tinker was. The shallow salesman in the short story

Dishonesty is shown throughout the story very well by the tinker. As you know, the tinker is a
salesman which is adventuring around America. Naturally as a salesman, you need to be good
with people. The tinker really was since he was very manipulating and convincing. The tinker
started off his conversation with her nicely until she began to be hard to convince. This is where
his dishonesty becomes apparent since he starts to lie and make up excuses. He starts talking
about how people are waiting for him and that he won t be having anything to eat tonight. He s a
salesman so he has to attract his customer toward his service. It s perfectly normal, but this is
where everything changes. He starts talking about her chrysanthemums. He quickly changes the
subject. What s them plants? Ma am? He s smart since he s still trying to get her to pay to his
services so he talks about her flowers. The conversation goes well and this is where he finally
shows his true colors. In one of the dialogue, the tinker has to bite his tongue just to approach
Elisa. They smell kind of nasty till you get used to them he said but quickly had changed his
tone when she said it wasn t nasty at all by saying I like the smell myself You can see how the
tinker really is trying to stay on her good side. He continues to flirt and mingle with her for quite
some time. He finally lies to her by saying there is a lady with a beautiful garden but has no
chrysanthemums and that she asked him to get him some seeds if he ever could. Elisa fell for
his bait and his plan. The tinker was very carefully manipulating her from the start. From being a
nice man to someone sociable in minutes of talking with her, she really had no idea what he was
trying to do. As the lies continued, Elisa eventually fell for his plan and gave him some work, but
she didn t know what he would do next. The tinker quickly gets caught up

Strengths And Weaknesses Of Immanuel Kant
Born in 1724 Immanuel Kant was a German philosopher whose work is considered to be the
highlight of modern philosophy. His work impacted ethics in a very big way. The fact that his
writing is among the most difficult to understand Kant believed the reason for this was the
source of morality, and his Critique of Pure Reason. Kant s theory, better known as deontological
theory holds truth in believing that doing the right thing and good will are motivating factors in
the ethical decision making process. His theory is an example of deontological theory but with
several weaknesses as well as strengths. I believe that lying is wrong just like Kant but I don t
agree that lying for the right reasons makes you a bad person. Kant s theory is an example of a
deontological moral theory. According to these theories, the rightness or wrongness of actions does
not depend on their consequences but on whether they fulfill our duty. Kant believed that there was
a supreme principle of morality, and he referred to it as The Categorical Imperative(CSUS, 2012).
A great example of Categorical Imperative would be Don t lie even though you might be lying to
benefit the other person it doesn t matter you shouldn t lie because it s the wrong thing to do. Kant
believed that in order to act in a morally correct manner everyone should act from duty. He also
believed that it wasn t the consequences of a person s actions, but their motivations that were

An Unpleasant Experience At An Airport
An unpleasant experience at an airport Recently, UNICEF released a video to promote their
campaign for needy children, however it presents a stereotype against physical appearances
rather than the campaign. In the video, a 6 year old girl who dressed pretty and neatly stood
alone on a street and many people asked her whether she was all right. Later, when the same girl
had changed her appearance in dirty clothes and stood alone again in the same street, then
nobody asked her whether she was okay. The attitudes that people showed depended on the child
s physical appearance. I have a similar experience. The experience that I realized how people are
offended by others who judge people based on the physical appearances was when I waited the
delayed airplane to go to Korea, a manager ignored me since I didn t dress up neatly, however he
changed his attitude politely as soon as he noticed I was a VIP in his company. A few years ago,
my mom called me in the night and said urgently, Your grandmother is in a critical condition. I
think you will be better to see her before she passes away. I was completely overwhelmed by the
unexpected news. My grandmother raised me when I was young because my parents were busy
with work, so she was very special to me. As soon as I heard that news, I bought the earliest flight
ticket for Korea immediately and rushed to the airport with a baggy hoodie and old sweatpants on.
Because the thought that I need to go to the airport as soon as

The Red Badge Of Courage
The Red Badge of Courage is a war novel written to exemplify the experiences and emotions of a
young soldier in the American Civil War. The novel details the qualities of maturity and manhood in
a gripping tale of Private Henry Fleming of the Union Army. The author, Stephen Crane wishes to
relate the American public to the emotional and psychological challenges endured by countless men
in the Civil War. Born in 1871, Stephen Cranewas raised in a Methodist family. While training to
become a professional baseball player, he eventually chose to write as his career. Throughout most
of his life, Stephen stuck to his commitment that all his work should be backed by personal
experience on the subject matter. However, his most famous work, The Red Badge of Couragewas
completely based on his remarkable imagination. He had no war experience; however, his vivid
descriptions and details of war surprised critics with their incredible accuracy. Stephen s
approach at writing the novel was to emphasize the passion, confusion, and growth of the
soldiers, as most of the war tales at the time were merely factual. The Red Badge of Courage
presents war in a new light, one of emotional struggles and mental milestones. In the tense times
of today, it is easy to forget the maturity and courage of our nation s heroes. Many writers and
politicians portray war as a battle between good and evil, or as a fight for superiority. While this
may be true, it is necessary to remember the

A Perfectionist in Nathanial Hawthorne s The Birthmark
People are obsessed with making everything perfect. Nathanial Hawthorne seemed to think that
the imperfections created by God should not be fixed by the will of man. In The Birthmark , he
conveys this view through symbolism, imagery, and characterization. Symbolism is scattered
throughout the work. The most obvious is the shape that the birthmark is in: a hand. It is meant
to represent the hand that God has in every formation of beauty, imperfections included. Because
of this connection to God, it is supposed to be accepted and seen as beautiful. However, Aylmer
cannot see the beauty underneath. There are also the speaking of the freckles and the ability of
the solution to be washed away as easily as the hands are cleansed (221). Old folklore says that
freckles are Angel s kisses and something that is supposed to make a person unique and more
beautiful. Aylmer, once again, only sees the imperfection, rather than the beauty. The Elixir of
Immortality represents man s thought they can control life spans and to, essentially, play God by
choosing who lives and dies (221). Hawthorne uses imagery to juxtapose the beauty of some
imperfections to the coldness of the analytical fixing of the imperfections. One of the most
memorable images from the story is when Georgiana is captured in a photo, but only the birthmark
comes out clear, while the rest of her beauty is blurred. In anger and disgust, Aylmer throws the
entire thing away. However, Hawthorne used this image to

Tragic Heroism in Shakespeare s Antony And Cleopatra Essay
In the tragedy Antony and Cleopatra , Shakespeare presents our protagonist Mark Antony as a
tragic hero. He does this by using a number of dramatically effective methods, including language,
staging techniques and structure. Aristotle defines a tragic hero as a character of noble stature
who has a tragic flaw (usually hubris which is over confidence/arrogance) and suffers a downfall
that is partially their fault but also due to factors beyond their control. The downfall they suffer
exceeds the crime but the tragic hero gains some sort of self awareness.
Before the audience meets Antony, Shakespeare presents us with two soldiers discussing Antony s
current debauched life. This is dramatically effective staging because they are acting ... Show more

Another soldier calls him the god of Jupiter which elevates Antony s status to that of a great
leader, because Jupiter was the leader amongst all the other gods. Philo compares him to Mars,
the god of war, which shows elevates his stature to be one of equal rank with a god. Caesar
recalls Antony s excellent soldiership and virtus qualities. Virtus was the Roman ideal of male
force and energy: military prowess coupled with devotion to one s honour and fame. Antony had
to drink/the stale of horses and eat strange flesh and the bark of trees in order to stay alive and he
was borne so like a soldier that thy cheek...lanked not. These striking images paint an unfathomable
scene of heroic endurance which the audience respects and admires.
The audience is privy to a private conversation in Caesar s home between Caesar and Lepidus,
who were the other two thirds of the triple pillar of the world the triumvirate. The triumvirate were
a powerful political and military force; they ruled the Roman Empire after the murder of Julius
Caesar. During this conversation, they discuss Antony s debauched life and his former greatness
in Caesar s home where Caesar feels free to express his opinions honestly and he declares that
Antony is a man who is abstract of all faults and someone who would give a kingdom for mirth.
This shows us how far he has fallen in Caesar s eyes as his tone would be scathing and I imagine
he would be pacing as he ranted about Antony

Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG)
If you are like the majority of all other Americans, chances are that you have once found yourself

then you still probably know of this fast food restaurant and its popular reputation, both good and

Chipotle Mexican Grill has been trying to recover from their e Coli outbreak in 2015 and
planned on finally escaping the decline in 2017. They planned on doing this by regaining the
trust of customers (Lahart, Justin). Things were looking up for the company as sales were up by
17% and their profits increased by more than double. However, things have not gone as the
company planned this year, and now the company has begun to once again decline. Although the
recent Hurricanes Irma and Harvey have not caused a large impact on the economy as a whole,
they have caused a major decline in Chipotle s earnings in the recent third quarter, as 425 of their
locations were in the path of either of the storms (Wiener Bronner, Danielle). Another negative
factor that is affecting the company is skyrocketing prices of avocados. The price of the fruit is up
by 125% since January. Two reasons behind this would be an unsatisfactory harvest and an
increasingly high demand for avocados. One more factor behind the company s plummeting stock is
a data security hack that allowed credit card information to be pilfered from customers in April

The Pros And Cons Of Radical Reconstruction
At the end of the Civil War, the nation s government was tasked with sewing back together a
nation so divided that they were willing to kill each other and split in two. While those that started
the war may not have been rational, those that ended the war were. Among the most pressing issues
the Reconstruction drafters faced like compensating northerners and not alienating the South,
providing justice to African Americans especially freed slaves stood forward as the primary moral
goal. After all, by the end of the war, the North s endgame became less about state defiance and
more about the moral obligation of emancipation. The North first employed a strategy of
appeasement to save the dignity of the South but after a recalcitrant South refused... Show more

Although it did temporarily provide African Americans with de jure equality, Radical
Reconstruction did not eliminate the intrinsic barriers of prejudice and neglect to African American
prosperity in the South and did not keep freedmen from being once again disenfranchised to
sharecropping and enslaved to debt after Northern supervision stagnated. Freedom, as defined by
Garrison Frazier, a Baptist minister representing Savannah s black community, was placing us
where we could reap the fruit of our own labor, and take care of ourselves, and African Americans
were unable to do that despite laws that purportedly freed African Americans. In fact, most of the
impacts of Radical Reconstruction an abandoned black community, a makeshift union, and an
empowered white supremacy movement overlooked by a corrupt state government system could
have been achieved by simply engaging with the normal Reconstruction. Radical Reconstruction
may have actually been worse because of the widened rift between the North and the South, with
resentment of the federal government s military intervention fostering a reluctancy for the South to
cooperate. Even though African Americans would have to wait decades for a semblance of justice,
it is perhaps for the better that the North did not force the South the alter their worldview. For the
United States government is not Orwell s thought police, and the nation s laws are unable to
oversee every single interaction and microaggression that citizens face as a result of others
preconceived notions and judgements. Considering that both gentle and strict approaches were
tried, there is very little that officials could have done to feasibly create a perfect reconstruction,
and hitting with a heavier hand would only further a stronger backlash. If they had done any one
thing better, it would have

  • 2. Road Trip Narrative Essay When i was in 6th grade my family and I lived in Gainesville, Missouri and my grandparents wanted to take us on a road trip, so I had to save up two hundred dollars because me and my sisters were going on a road trip to Monroe, Louisiana with our grandparents. I remember my grandparents giving my sisters and I a piggy bank that counts our money so everytime we would but money in it would tell us our balance. I can remember how excited we were about them we would just take our money out and reset the piggy bank and put all of our money in them and watch the numbers go up. When the trip was a couple months away my grandparents got scammed and the scammers took 2,000 dollars it was devastating because we had to wait to go on the trip so they could get more money. When there was 2 days till we left we all was very excited and all were packing up our clothes into bags and suit cases. We packed our snakes and charged up our tablets so we would be ready. I can remember how hard it was to fall asleep that night, it was like I drinked 10 cups of coffee because how excited we were. The morning had finally came we all woke up very early sowe would have everything ready to pack into the car and not leave anything behind. We were all waiting for my grandparents to show up and pick us up so the road trip could begin. When they finally arrived we all helped loading the car and off we were. • 3. Comparing Tradition and Change in Amy Tan s The Kitchen... Tradition and Change in The Kitchen God s Wife and The Joy Luck Club Throughout the novels The Kitchen God s Wife and The Joy Luck Club, author Amy Tan conveys the message of tradition and change. Each novel contains sections about mothers talking and relating their stories to their daughters. The daughters in The Joy Luck Club hear stories about loss and happiness, and joy and hate. Each of the four mothers tell these stories to their daughters as lessons, or offerings for their futures. They tell the stories to show how lucky their daughters have been, yet how their lives will never be the same as their own lives have been. They try to help their daughters on some level with these stories. Yet they comprehend the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Yet, with even more consistency, she will view her mother with irritancy or sadness. On the surface, Winnie s ways are more irritating than mysterious to the daughter. (Yglesias) Even in the first sentence the reader lays eyes on, Pearl demonstrates these grievances she harbors, Whenever my mother talks to me, she begins the conversation as if we were already in the middle of an argument. (Tan, 3) and further in her segments of the novel, she indicates quite a few problems she has with her mother. Similarly, Tan also has these problems with her mother Tan felt that she had disappointed her mother when she dropped out of medical school... (Feng) I secretly worried that I had missed better opportunities. My mother had put those thoughts in my head. (Tan, 8) To this day, it drives me crazy, listening to her various hypothesis, the way religion, medicine and superstition all merge with her own beliefs. (Tan, 27) Yet, sadly, Pearl also says that there s a lot I don t know about my mother. (Tan, 53) Through these silent criticisms of her mother, Pearl assigns herself a critical perspective on her mother s life. (Yglesias) The daughters relate to readers that their perceptions of their mother s traditions and culture, even though those perceptions might be different than the ones the mothers hoped toconvey, have ... The Debate Over Individuals And Groups Zewei Ao #4641533 Group name: The creator of canon 03/06/2016 The debate over individuals and groups Introduction The individual and the group, can their ability to either coexist or be at odds with each other? As in many famous or popular novels and films of out time, the individuals and the groups are considered as the forefront of each story. No matter what types they are, the individuals and the groups is more or less represented in those literary works. In most cases, those books and films will present the conflict between the individuals and the groups. The appearance of the conflict between the individuals and the groups is on the background of times and is the requirement of certain history period. Without this conflict, stories ... When every character in this novel uses more pronouns referring to oneself, the individual character will apply the first person plural we , rather than the singular I . Utilizing words in this way is easily let me get confused at the beginning when I was reading. However, related to the opinions about the relationship between the individuals and the groups getting themselves expressed in the book make the subject of the theme clear to me eventually. Anthem draws heavily on the historical record of twentieth century. The collectivist society described in the book is called Equality 7 2521. This collectivist society is the place where is similar to the Nazi. This society makes lots of restrictions that forbid people to have their individually thoughts. Moreover, people are forbidden to think freely. All of them have to act in unquestioning obedience to the orders of the society. The author of Anthem addresses that collectivism refers to the subjugation of the individual to the group . And it is not necessary to understand what the group is. It could be a certain class, a race or country and so forth. In this context, each people are not considered as an autonomous individual with his or her own life. Instead, they are treated as a component of the group whose sole purpose is to obey and serve this group. • 5. Crime Scene Pulp Fiction Humberto Guitron Professor David Cowper English 201 24 April 2015 Pulp Fiction Diner Scene In the film Pulp Fiction by director Quentin Tarantino, audience members are immersed in a reality shown from a career criminal s point of view. Only after watching the various behaviors of the main characters in both their work and social settings can viewers fully comprehend the complexity of Tarantino s characters. If one hasn t watched the whole movie through, one could probably assume that Jules is the heartless and impulsive epitome of the typical thug. We see this merciless killer execute a guy just to intimidate and get inside the head of some other dude for falling short on a business arrangement with Jules s boss, the notorious Marsellus... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With slow cuts as well as the blockage in the scene, the film brings all eyes to Jules as he delivers his speech. The exchange of words, references from literary works, and slow cutting present in the diner all cooperate to challenge the viewer s stereotypes with respect to Jules. If it weren t for this scene people might still argue that the character Jules didn t evolve at all and it might be true. Despite that this scene locks Jules s position as a progressive character and leaves everyone without doubt that the stereotype of the typical gunman has been crumbled. Pulp Fiction s intellectual choice of words takes hold of our interest while simultaneously making us feel as if we were there. Jules s words of wisdom respecting Ezekiel 25:17 were emphasized by all the incorporation of slow cut scenes. Adding Ringo s blurry noggin, the viewer was always face to face with Jules eyes as if he could stare right into your soul. This in turn creates a disturbingly hypnotic aspect to this legendary ... • 6. The Need to Measure Transit System Performance The necessity to measure transit system performance along with its different dimensions has led to the development of a large number of quantitative performance indicators. Nevertheless, depending upon the specific indicator assessed, one can reach to different conclusions regarding performance. Furthermore, though performance and scale economies are closely related issues, they have been generally examined separately in the transit literature. There have been significant amounts of research undertaken in order to examine the transit system performance, and in turn of assessing the performance based on such methods but the two characteristics underline the work. First, due to heterogeneity in getting different relationships between efficiency and effectiveness, system performance, existence of scale of economies and various such issues, the conclusion which have come out of different studies is not same. In other words there are conflicting conclusions. Even researchers are not using the data which is provided by NTD (National Transit Data base) and as a result the comparability of findings across researches is questionable. A second problem arises because researches have been using cross section time series data from largely heterogeneous systems and have introduced a size related bias in their results (Berechman, 1993). Tomazinis (1977) specified a set of indicators in order to measure the public transit systems s performance. His measurement was built on three bases; ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Nat Hocken, the protagonist, who because of a war time disability, had a pension and did not work full time at the farm (Maurier 1). Nat used to watch the birds on the cliff s edge during midday. But that fall, he had noticed something different in the birds; there were more birds than usual and they were restless, maybe because they sensed that the winter was going to be a hard one. That night, Nat hears a tapping on the window and goes to inquire, and a bird tries to get inside grazing his knuckles in the process but flies away soon. Sometime later, the tapping starts again, but this time more insistent. He goes to the window to check for a second time but is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the tapping and the rasping sounds at the window ceases, the family goes to the farm for supplies. The land birds do not attack, but sit on the trees, waiting and watching. At the farm, Nat finds the dead bodies of Jim, Mr. and Mrs. Trigg. He collects food, fuel and all the necessities and leaves for his house with his family. He starts working on the doors, windows and the chimney preparing for the next attack. When he looks out to the sea, he realizes that the tide has turned again and the gulls have started rising. After the expansion of our production and distribution capacity, we will be in the position to meet the increasing demand for our motorcycles and other products. Growth potential appears very good especially in the overseas market. Gaining a larger market share in these area may require a further increase in production and distribution capacities. Sales of Buell motorcycles (which are distributed through select Harley Davidson dealers) increased to $14 million in 1995 as compared to $6 million in 1994. The Company began 1995 at a scheduled motorcycle production rate of 395 units per day. As the implementation of the manufacturing strategy continued, the rate increased to 470 units per day by the end of the year. The Company exceeded its production goal of 100,000 units in 1995 and anticipates 1996 production will reach at least 115,000 units. The Company is currently reviewing alternative sites for the construction of a new manufacturing facility to enable it to achieve its long term goal of doubling motorcycle production by 2003. Year end data indicates that the domestic (United States) motorcycle market continued to grow throughout 1995. Compared to 1994, industry registrations of domestic heavyweight (engine displacements in excess of 751cc) motorcycles were up 11.3% . The Company ended 1995 with a domestic market share of 55.8% compared to 56.1% in 1994. This decrease is a reflection of the Company s constrained production capacity in a growing heavyweight motorcycle market. Demand for the Company s motorcycles continues to exceed supply with nearly all of the Company s independent domestic dealers reporting retail orders on all of their remaining 1996 model year motorcycle allocations (production through June, 1996). • 9. Comparing the Personalities of the Writers, Dante and Chaucer Even though Dante and Chaucer never met, Dante having died 19 years before Chaucer was born, Dante inadvertently became Chaucer s life long mentor. Dante s severe spirit turned out to be far more harsh than Chaucer s nature, however Dante s protГ©gГ©, Boccaccio, became one of Chaucer s greatest inspirations. Looking back at both Dante and Chaucer s works, experts now see striking similarities in their writing. Whether Chaucer ever meant to use Dante s materials or not, he is now closely compared with his contrary counter part. The original purpose of this paper was to tell how closely related Chaucer s writing was to Dante s, however, a closer look at the man, the better the picture is that shows the blatant contrasts between these two... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These experiences made Dante quickly realize that this world is corrupt to the core. Greed for material things is the main fault, greed which is allowed to dictate the actions of men. Only a cessation of strife, the establishment of universal peace can ensure the happiness of mankind and allow men to pursue the ultimate aim for which God has destined them on earth, that of exercising constantly and to the full their distinctive quality, the Virtus Intellective (virtuous intellect) (Limentani,117). He believed that life on this earth was for a purpose and had meaning to it this can be seen in the Inferno because Dante is working to make his journey purposeful. He travels so far and tries so hard to work his way up to heaven. Chaucer stands in contrast to Dante s almost dogmatic piety and looks to other things as purposeful in his life. Chaucer s views of life come from a very political point of view. He was introduced to court life while still in his teens, becoming a page to one of the kings daughter in laws. From there he rose in status until he was promoted to the rank of esquire. Though he was exposed to political plots and war Chaucer exhibit s a lust and compassion for life that completely eludes Dante s works. While he was easy going and generally sympathetic to others Chaucer was nothing of a typical idealist. While Dante searched for ways to better the world by destroying chaotic war and hate, Chaucer was content to let the world ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Critical Analysis Of Star Wars James Nathan Walters Professor Kevin Copeland English 2106 3 December 2015 Critical Analysis of Star Wars Released in 1977, the original Star Wars movie quickly became the highest grossing film of all time and it changed the way people thought of filmography. With its unique special effects and storyline, it created a new era of Hollywood movies. It became a huge blockbuster and eventually spawned a new universe that now spans several decades. The films, now numbering six with three more being made, have a fan base of millions of people. In order for a film (series) to have that large of a fan base, the fans must be able to relate to the film. This enables the dominant race to grant privileges to some while at the expense of others. Entrance into this group is usually exclusive to one type of person (Kendall). In totalitarian and dictatorial instances, such as in Star Wars, the line between the group in power and all others is bold and easy to see. Those who are not members of the group in power are subject to discrimination and have fewer rights and privileges in his or her society. The Star Wars films provide both symbolic and concrete evidence of this racial disparity. George Lucas use of color throughout the films is essential in the development of the narrative as well as to emphasize the progression of the racial inequalities and prejudices between humans and aliens. The color progression from The Phantom Menace to The Return of The Jedi acts as a sort of meter pertaining to the collapse of the Republic and the rise of the Galactic Empire. The first film chronologically, The Phantom Menace, employs bright, happy colors to convey hope and life. The vibrant colors of Naboo, the underwater home of the Gungan s, and the interior of many key buildings are all made up of colors that are synonymous with (relative) peace and innocence. Over the past three years revenues have declined and Greywell suffered a $5, 174 in losses in 1994. Coral Divers Resort needs to do something before business gets worse and Jonathan Greywell and his resortgo out of business. The first option that Greywell has would be to move Coral Divers Resort to New Providence Island in the Bahamas. No one on Greywell s staff was very excited about the shark feeding diving and most of them would have to be replaced. Novice divers would not be able to take advantage of adventure diving because it requires previous experience and a high skill level. The other concern associated with adventure diving would be the safety risks and skill level of younger divers vacationing with their parents. The market for adventure diving is doing well, but already seems to be saturated with competitors. There would also be a lack of returning customers because adventure diving would most likely be a one time experience for most tourists. The third and final option would be for Greywell to pair with Rascal s, a travel company and target the rapidly growing family market segment. The current average age of a new diver is 36, and many of them have children. A Rascal s strategy would give busy parents the option of bringing their children with them on a dive vacation. However, it is very interesting to note that the mythology of the Vikings (Norse) has many similarities with the Greek myths. These myths are, by no means, identical to the Greek ones (like the Roman ones are), but there are very distinct commonalities between the two. I see two possible reasons for this besides pure coincidence. The first has to do with the fact that Norse myths were codified during the Viking era: 780 1070. This gives the Norsemen many centuries to become exposed to the Greek (or Roman) myths. The Vikings did travel as far east as the Caspian sea, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The gods and goddesses are powerful beings capable of super human powers, but nevertheless are characters fraught with very human frailties and flaws. In this way they created gods that had similarities with the common man in the society. This made the gods more tangible and easier to identify with. I think that this was necessary because they were not yet at the societal maturity level to have a single god on a cosmic plane. Most of the comparisons will be examining the similarities between major Greek and Norse gods, as well as creatures, stories and specific symbols which are featured in the mythologies. Some of the gods do not have direct counterparts (Thor, Athena and Loki). However, I will provide possible similarities within the respective mythologies. ASGARD Asgard is sometimes known as Asgarth. No movies do that better than horror movies, which could have you sitting at the edge of your seat in one minute, then have you cowering back in your seat the next minute. I experienced a horror movie like that, it pulled me into the movie and made me feel everything the main character felt. The movie is called The Forest. But it is not just any forest the sister got lost in, it is the Aokigahara forest in Japan which is also called the suicide forest because of the high amounts of suicides committed in the forest. The movie is able to utilize the inherent creepiness in the forest, to keep the movie suspenseful and full of tension. Throughout the movie the forest is eerily quiet and all you hear is the crunching of twigs under the protagonist feet or the sound of the wind rustling the branches of the trees. He won an Academy Award for True Grit (1969) and is consider one of the top leading actors during Hollywood s classic period. In Red River, Wayne stars in the unusual role of Thomas Dunson, who borders on good and bad tendencies throughout the film. Wayne, often typecast, is given a tortured, conflicted character to play (Ebert 392), and does remarkably well portraying someone with questionable values. Wayne is sometimes considered more of a natural force than an actor, but here his understated acting is right on the money; the critic Joseph McBride says that John Ford, who had directed Wayne many times, saw Red River and told Hawks, I never knew the big son of a bitch could act (Ebert 393). Some of Wayne s best films include Stagecoach (1939), Angel and the Badman (1947), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), Sands of Iwo Jima (1949), The Searchers (1956), Rio Bravo (1959), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), and True Grit (1969). Virtus was the Roman ideal of male force and energy: military prowess coupled with devotion to one s honour and fame. Antony had to drink/the stale of horses and eat strange flesh and the bark of trees in order to stay alive and he was borne so like a soldier that thy cheek...lanked not. Chipotle Mexican Grill has been trying to recover from their e Coli outbreak in 2015 and planned on finally escaping the decline in 2017. They planned on doing this by regaining the trust of customers (Lahart, Justin). Things were looking up for the company as sales were up by 17% and their profits increased by more than double. However, things have not gone as the company planned this year, and now the company has begun to once again decline. Although the recent Hurricanes Irma and Harvey have not caused a large impact on the economy as a whole, they have caused a major decline in Chipotle s earnings in the recent third quarter, as 425 of their locations were in the path of either of the storms (Wiener Bronner, Danielle). Another negative factor that is affecting the company is skyrocketing prices of avocados. The price of the fruit is up by 125% since January. Two reasons behind this would be an unsatisfactory harvest and an increasingly high demand for avocados. One more factor behind the company s plummeting stock is a data security hack that allowed credit card information to be pilfered from customers in April 2017 (Gillespie, ... • 53. The Pros And Cons Of Radical Reconstruction At the end of the Civil War, the nation s government was tasked with sewing back together a nation so divided that they were willing to kill each other and split in two. While those that started the war may not have been rational, those that ended the war were. Among the most pressing issues the Reconstruction drafters faced like compensating northerners and not alienating the South, providing justice to African Americans especially freed slaves stood forward as the primary moral goal. After all, by the end of the war, the North s endgame became less about state defiance and more about the moral obligation of emancipation. The North first employed a strategy of appeasement to save the dignity of the South but after a recalcitrant South refused... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although it did temporarily provide African Americans with de jure equality, Radical Reconstruction did not eliminate the intrinsic barriers of prejudice and neglect to African American prosperity in the South and did not keep freedmen from being once again disenfranchised to sharecropping and enslaved to debt after Northern supervision stagnated. Freedom, as defined by Garrison Frazier, a Baptist minister representing Savannah s black community, was placing us where we could reap the fruit of our own labor, and take care of ourselves, and African Americans were unable to do that despite laws that purportedly freed African Americans. In fact, most of the impacts of Radical Reconstruction an abandoned black community, a makeshift union, and an empowered white supremacy movement overlooked by a corrupt state government system could have been achieved by simply engaging with the normal Reconstruction. Radical Reconstruction may have actually been worse because of the widened rift between the North and the South, with resentment of the federal government s military intervention fostering a reluctancy for the South to cooperate. Even though African Americans would have to wait decades for a semblance of justice, it is perhaps for the better that the North did not force the South the alter their worldview. For the United States government is not Orwell s thought police, and the nation s laws are unable to oversee every single interaction and microaggression that citizens face as a result of others preconceived notions and judgements. Considering that both gentle and strict approaches were tried, there is very little that officials could have done to feasibly create a perfect reconstruction, and hitting with a heavier hand would only further a stronger backlash. If they had done any one thing better, it would have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
