The Issues Of The Lgbt Community
Abstract Research has proven that people are able to make judgements with a fair amount of accuracy.
These perceptions are drawn from cultural stereotypes that lead to categorization of others into social
categories. The LGBT community has been a subject of interest over the past 25 30 years. Research
has been dedicated into searching for the neurological, biological and social correlates associated with
this community. The main focus of the research has been on the ability to identify people who are gay.
The term gaydar has been coined by different researchers in the field and it relates to the ability to
perceive another individual who is gay. However, the research involved has been strictly tied to
psychology and as a result its implications are subjective in nature. The current work utilized event
related potentials to measure the cognitive processes associated with making the determination of one
s sexual orientation. 21 heterosexual and homosexual male participants had electrodes placed on their
scalp to measure their brain activity in response to 120 pictures of gay or straight men. Results found
that homosexual males exerted more effort when processing the faces of the targets.
Sexual Orientation Perception
Kirkpatrick (2000) contends that homosexuality has been an element of the human experience from
the outset. There has been a considerable amount of research attempting to identify the correlates
associated with homosexual behavior. Most data

Gander-Personal Narrative
I finally made it to Independence. As I walked to the front entrance I noticed a lot of wagon near the
entrance. As I soon as I got the entrance, they made me pay a small toll. I took my wagon inside and
gander at the town. The only thing I could see was the people and their wagon crowding in the streets.
I look all around the whole town, but can only see wagons close to me. Then I noticed a small general
store close to the bar. I got up close and the sign read Jorgensen s General Store. I checked my
supplies and noticed I was running low. I walk into the General store. When I walked in, there was
Lady working at the counter. I greeted her with kind respect and I ask her if I can by some supplies.
She greeted me with kind respect and she told me I can look around the store. I gander at all of then
item she had in her store. After a couple of minutes, I selected a few item to take. I grabbed a hunting
knife since the one I have been using has been getting dull. I got some bacon and vegetables since I
was running low. Also I grabbed some sugar and salt to help with some of the food. I go a first aid kit

Colonial Crucible
Thereby this project follows the idea put forward in Afred W. McCoys and Francisco A. Scaranos

dealing with as diverse topics as environment, economy, public health, military and race, the book
tries to explores in what ways, if any, the U.S [...] was formed or even transformed from [the]
experiences gained at its colonial periphery 1. In their article On the Tropic of Cancer: Transitions and
Transformations in the U.S. Imperial State McCoy and Scaranos argue that influence does not only
flow from the center towards the periphery but that instead the imperial periphery was important for
changes occurring in the center. Pointing out that while the new colonial territories provide a testing
field for new approaches, the gained experiences also profoundly influenced American cultures and
society between 1840 and 1930 2. Thereby triggering a debate about the different aspects of this

Oedipus The King Pride Essay
Man s Greatest Enemies Although Oedipus is an ideal leader who once saved the city of Thebes from
the monstrous Sphinx, his fatal flaws of anger and pride ultimately lead to his tragic downfall.
Oedipus s harsh temper leads him to make rash decisions and often causes him to show disrespect to
people. For example, Oedipus displays his quick temper when the blind prophet, Tiresias, accuses him
of murdering Laius, the former king of Thebes. Although Tiresias is physically blind, he sees the truth,
while Oedipus sees but is blind to the truth. Oedipus becomes furious with the old man and begins to
yell at him for this ghastly accusation. You miserable old man! You d drive a stone to fury, Oedipus
screams violently. He even goes as far as to describe Tiresias as a night hatched thing. Oedipus truly is
an ideal leader; however, this flaw aids in his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His more significant flaw, his pride, fuels his quick temper which leads to a greater dilemma for the
king. For instance, in the fourth episode as the shepherd from Corinth arrives, Oedipus shows his pride
when he takes advantage of the old man. Look, Elders, if I may play the prophet too, I d say although I
ve never met the man there s the herdsmen we ve been searching for, Oedipus declares pompously.
Seconds before the shepherd enters, Oedipus compares himself to a prophet when he tells the elders
his opinions about the man approaching. When the old man refuses to tell Oedipus the truth, Oedipus
threatens to hurt and even to kill the poor man, demonstrating Oedipus s hubris fueling his temper.
Perhaps the most significant example of his vanity occurs when the messenger from Corinth delivers
the news to Jocasta and Oedipus revealing the death of Oedipus s father. Instead of mourning his
father s death, Oedipus celebrates thinking that he broke the curse and outwitted the gods since his

I intern at the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center, that provides comprehensive health care and
support services to youth from 10 to 24 years old. At the beginning of the internship, I was assigned to
serve the Harlem community which has high proportions of Black and Hispanic residents. However,
due to my serious ankle injuries, I cannot observe and collect the data about all businesses and
organizations that are available in the Harlem community. However, when my teammates finish
collecting the data, I participate in the R3 Mapping project, which is based on developing research

people in developing research questions and short surveys, analyzing data and developing additional
data gathering methods and then presenting finding during symposium can improve our collaboration
and understanding one another. According to Pamella Slim, developing a strong relationship with
coworkers (in my case youth) and collaboration is a great way to develop ideas and successfully finish

Story Of An Hour Love
According to many dictionaries, when looking up the definition of love, you are sure to find
something along the lines of an intense feeling of deep affection. If you were to ask if this were true,
the chances of the answer being no is slim to none. Love is about being with someone no matter the
differences of opinion, through sickness and in health, in the bad times and the good times. You love
that person unconditionally and without a shadow of a doubt they are the one person you want to
spend forever with. Although this may be true in some instances, love as portrayed in The Story of an
Hour is unseemly. The idea of love is ironic in this story because of how ecstatic Mrs. Mallard reacted
to what an intensely in love wife would think is heart breaking news. Mrs. Mallard seemed extremely
over joyed and a feeling of freedom consumed her when she learned of the news. In the short story,
The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin, Mrs. Mallard learns of news that her husband has died while on
the job. Her sister, Josephine, is the teller of the gut wrenching message while also trying to dance
around the cold, hard truth. Along with Josephine was Richards, a friend of ... Show more content on

Mallard s epiphany, she began to sort of embrace the death of her husband. She knew that now her life
was indeed hers and there was no one in the way to stop it. In spite of her happiness, she knew that she
would inevitably shed some tears when she saw the kind, tender hands folded in death; the face that
had never looked save with love upon her, fixed and gray and dead (Chopin p. 525) However, Mrs.
Mallard looked past the unpleasant situation and began wishing for time to dedicate only to herself.
This is ironic because most of time when a loved one passes you feel sad and depressed and the
thought of happiness is nonexistent. People grieve and grieve until they make themselves sick.
Freedom, happiness and joy are not associated with death as it is in this story with Mrs.

Aeschylus The Oresteia
The Oresteia The Oresteia is a trilogy of Greek tragedies written by Aeschylus. This trilogy consists of
Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers or The Choephoroe, and The Eumenides. The only extant example
of an ancient Greek theatre trilogy, the Oresteia won first prize at the Dionysia festival in 458 BC.
Many consider the Oresteia to be Aeschylus finest work. The principal themes of the trilogy include
the contrast between revenge and justice, as well as the transition from personal vendetta to organized
litigation. In this trilogy there are multiple themes carried through all three plays. Other themes can be
found and in one, or two, of the three plays, but are not applicable to the Trilogy as a whole and thus

The play starts off at the temple of Apollo at Delphi, the home of the famous Oracle of Delphi. Orestes
find himself there for temporary shelter from the Furies that have been torturing him ever since the
murder of his mother. Orestes pleads the gods for help against the Furies. Apollo cannot help him, but
with a sleeping curse he slows down the Furies and their evil works against Orestes for a little while.
As the Furies surround Orestes again, he begs Athena to save him. This leads to the trial of Orestes. As
a result of the trial, Orestes leaves to go home to Argos and the Furies have their name switched to
The Eumenides, or Kindly Ones, and ruling that they will now be honoured by the citizens of Athens.
By the end of the trilogy, Orestes is seen to be the key, not only to ending the curse of the House of

Good And Evil In Frankenstein
The novel tells the story of the scientist Victor Frankenstein who loses touch with reality while
creating a new form of life, a monstrous being who nevertheless has human character traits. The
nameless creature appears to be a representation of evil, a character representing unconscious,
instinctual drives. Yet, the creature becomes only a monster due to denied love and rejection by Victor
Frankenstein. Thus, he swears to take revenge, transforming into a monster. Thus, Frankenstein
presents two characters that cannot be easily determined good or evil as human beings have both
qualities within themselves.

As he reads these old works, Victor is not able to understand that these theories have long been
invalidated. With the ideas of alchemy, the study of the philosopher s stone and the elixir of life, he
leaves his home to study at the university in Ingolstadt, Germany. After the death of his mother
Caroline, he feels the pain of solitude and retreats in the acquisition of knowledge, learning about the
limits of science and the human body.
First, one has the impression that Victor s interests in creating a being is only of honourable nature: I
thought that if I could bestow animation upon lifeless matter, I might in process of time (although I
now find it impossible) renew life where death had apparently devoted the body of corruption (Shelley
53). However, he seems to be an unreliable narrator. The reader develops doubts whether his true
intentions are as noble as he tries to present. It appears that the true interest is quite egoistic, as he
desires to gain fame:

prospect which it illustrated, I was surprised, that among so many men of genius who had directed
their enquiries towards the same science, that I alone should be reserved to discover so astonishing a

Modern Indie Music Movement
Imagine the discovery of an art form so abstract and different, one of which possessed with strange
ideals and seemingly free artists to create and dispose at their will. These are the basic attributes of
what we call independent, or indie, music. Independent music is a movement meant to represent the
opposition of being trite an anti establishment fuck you to the mass marketing of originality.
Independent music started as bands that were on small and relatively low budget labels that had a do it
yourself attitude and retained an outsider and underground perspective. From then on, the
conversation changed from how the music was made to how the music sounds, such as containing
abstract or non mainstream themes, instruments, lyrics, etc.. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Some of these artists were R.E.M., Pixies, and The Smiths from the UK, a band that helped inspire the
guitar based genre jangle pop. Around this time in the United States, the term indie was particularly
associated with the intense, distortion heavy sounds of the Pixies, Hüsker Dü, Minutemen, Meat
Puppets, Dinosaur Jr., and The Replacements. The 1990 s proceeded to bring massive changes to the
indie rock scene. Grunge (a subgenre of rock that fuses elements of punk rock, heavy metal, and
distorted electric guitar) bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Hole, and Alice in Chains
broke into the mainstream, achieving commercial chart success and widespread exposure. As a result
of indie rock bands moving into the mainstream, the term indie lost its original counter cultural
context and began to refer to the new, commercially more accessible form of music that was now
achieving mainstream success. It has been argued that the term sellout lost its meaning as grunge
made it possible for a small movement, no matter how radical, to be commercialized by the
mainstream, solidifying the formation of an individualist, fragmented

Academic And Artistic Areas Of The Arts
Nearly everyone accepts the fact that no two students are alike, so why do we, as a society, expect all
students to achieve high marks in the same courses? The arts have long been seen as extra and have
not received the same level of respect as traditional academics like algebra and biology. Music,
painting, and photography, are just as skill based and require similar amounts of time and effort as
their STEM counterparts. The idea that students who do not perform well in academic classes, even
though they excel in the arts, are unintelligent is a false belief. Both academic and artistic areas require
work and practice. Music requires learning how to read notes and how to actually play an instrument
fluidly, memorizing the individual tones created by the different parts of the instrument. Composing
their own music would require a lot of effort and thought as well. Visual arts, like painting and
photography, include their own set of skills and techniques that need to be properly combined in order
to produce varied and visually pleasing work. It is not just having an idea pop into your head and
slapping it onto some paper or snapping a quick photo and printing it out. Studying literature requires
students to think critically and look beyond the surface of the text to find out the more complex ideas
the author wanted to get across. Another factor that needs to be taken into account is style of thinking.
Not everyone s though process is the same. There

Mandrin s Actions
Throughout history, crime literature has been one of the most popular genres to reach the masses.
Ranging from last words of criminals sentenced to death to sermons about crime and religion, crime
stories have presented criminals to the masses in different lights and with different opinions. Some
condone their treacherous acts in favor of describing their libertine lives; others outright condemn
their crimes and lifestyles. However, no matter the purpose of the writer, most crime accounts have the
same effect: they make criminals likable to people.
Criminals are, by definition, people who do not conform to society s norms and values. In many
occasions, they take advantage of others in order to satisfy their own interests. How then, can they ...

Pirate stories, for instance, have not only vivid descriptions of their violent acts but also narrations of
their sexual lives, in addition to illustrations that accompany them that have clear sexual undertones.
The promiscuity and even homosexuality are mentioned throughout their accounts and are such an
inherent part of the pirate image as the Jolly Roger. In fact, gender and sexuality played primary roles
in popular portrayals of piracy and seafaring, (Eastman, 95), particularly because of the rather detailed
descriptions of the actively sexual lives they led and also because of the illustrations with sexual
undertones that accompanied such . For instance, in Defoe s book, there are multiple pictures of
pirates to illustrate the pirates about which he s talking about. It is notable that these images convey
not only extreme violence but also sexual undertones, as the positioning of the bodies of the pirates
and their weapons and swords as rather phallic objects serve to illustrate their sexually liberated

A Report On Solar Thermal Energy
Solar Thermal Energy
Introduction
Solar thermal technology uses the sun s energy, instead of fossil fuels, to get cheap, environmentally
friendly thermal energy. This energy is employed to heat water or different fluids, and can also power
solar cooling systems. Solar thermal systems vary from solar PV systems that generate electricity
instead of heat.
World Solar Market
The world has giant solar energy resources that haven t been greatly used so far. Alternative energy
presently accounts for a tiny share of world primary energy consumption, however its use is projected
to extend powerfully over the outlook amount to 2030.
The highest solar resource potential per unit surface area is within the Red Sea area. Australia
conjointly has higher incident alternative energy per unit area than the other continent within the
world. However, the distribution of solar energy use amongst countries reflects government policy
settings that encourage its use, rather than resource availability.
Australia receives a mean of 58 million PJ of radiation per annum, close to 10,000 times larger than its
total energy consumption of 5772 PJ in 2007 08. In theory, then, if only 0.1 per cent of the incoming
radiation may be regenerate into usable energy at an efficiency of 10%, all of Australia s energy
desires may be provided by solar power. Similarly, the energy falling on a solar Darwin, Brisbane,
Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne and Hobart farm covering 50km by 50km would be spare to

Ellen Degeneres Satire Essay
As Anne Frank once wisely stated, How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before
starting to improve the world (citation???). She probably was not thinking of satire in entertainment
when she wrote this, but I think it fits perfectly. Satire is a technique that aims to reform society, often
times through humor (I used parts of definitions from pdf... how do I cite it). There are popular
television shows that employ this technique in order to better the world. In Ellen Degeneres daytime
talk show she satirizes politicians through a skit that pokes fun at people who are against issues such
as: gay marriage and reaching across the aisle. The Ellen Show is famous for its humorous interviews,
monologues, and skits. In one particular segment, Degeneres pretended to be candidate in a 2016
Republican Presidential Debate. This statement alone proves the use of farce because it is both
improbable and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this skit, she imitates a serious situation, the presidential debate, in order to comedically ridicule it.
For example, one of the moderators asks the candidates what they would do in order to win enough
independent and democratic support to become the next president, to which Degeneres responds that
she would support both sides of the aisle. The other candidates look angry or confused; then, she
claims that the best support is Ellen Underwear and they all nod their heads in agreement. This
satirizes people who are followers and just go along with what other people tell them. It also satirizes
politicians against reaching across the aisle because it appears that they do not have a good reason to
be unsupportive of this. Degeneres is making a statement that a politician has the potential to be more
successful if they are willing to work with everyone. All of what Degeneres says is lighthearted,
however the audience understands that she is working to reform

Summary description
Observational methods involve an investigator viewing users as they work and taking notes on the
activity which takes place. Observation may be either direct, where the investigator is actually present
during the task, or indirect, where the task is viewed by some other means such as through use of a
video camera.
Typical Application Areas

intend to carry out establish the times, places, and people who will be observed. Note that in some
countries, the law may prohibit you from taking video films of people without their explicit written
consent.
3.Decide on the recording technique you will use. Will you rely on hand written notes (traditional),
audio, or video and audio records? Note that the more complete your record, the longer it takes to
analyze. It is useful to be able to make some kind of first cut analysis during observation
4.Analyse, summarize, and report in relation to the objectives set out at the start.
Observation as an approach in a laboratory setting is instantiated quite specifically using the
Laboratory Based Observation approach. A variation of single user observation is two user
observation where pairs of users are invited to work together and the above process is carried out on
the pair. One of the users in two user observation may be a member of the design team, and this is
particularly useful in situations where there may be an unstable prototype.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Overdraft
1. Overdraft
Overdraft may occur when the amount of money which is withdrawn from a bank account exceeds the
amount available (Overdraft, 2015). Normally it happens when an individual writes the total on the
check more than the total balance in the account. The bank will cover the checks and allows the
customers to deposit or place more funds into the account in order to cover the negative balance. In
addition, the bank will charge an interest at the agreed rate (Overdraft, 2015) on this short term loan
instead of charging fees. Basically, the bank would not reject the customers check when there is no
enough funds which are available to cover up because the customes pay for the overdraft protection on
their account.

Literature Review On Social Movements
II. LITERATURE REVIEW Social movements (SMs) have been part of society s history and politics
for centuries. For some authors, they started with the French Revolution and have been constantly
rising and falling depending on the existent socio political climate (Reichmann Fernandez Buey,
1994). For Charles Tilly, the nineteenth laid the groundwork for the modern social movements of the
twentieth century (Tilly, 1998). Karl Marx also studied and developed the concept of SMs; he viewed
them as a means of achieving a deep social change through class conflict (Tarrow, 2011). Studied in
relationship to the rise of globalisation and social media, the expansion and modernisation of SMs has
become increasingly prominent in the academic literature of the last century. Accordingly,
Globalisation has made it possible for individuals to empower themselves through participation in
supranational organisations and international organisms that challenge governmental authority. As
evidenced by Manuel Castells, populations around the world are now able to come together to affect
change by expressing ideas and demonstrating in support of pressing issues (Castells, 2009). Chile has
been no exception to the trend of globalisation and has participated in and developed a number of
strong international social movements. The academic literature on social movements is vast. Since
there are many types of SMs that focus on different aspects of human life (economic, social, political

Similarities Between Paradise Lost And Paradise Lost
Paradise Lost comparison to three epics of antiquity There are many ways to compare and contrast
Paradise Lost with the three other epics of antiquity. The epics are Paradise Lost, Aeneid, The Epic
Gilgamesh, and The Iliad. The most obvious difference is era. Paradise Lost is an epic poem from the
17th century and is written in blank verse which is the most modern phrasing method. According to an
article on Enotes, out of the other three epics, the Iliad and Aeneid came from the same dactyllic
family. ( Compare Milton s Paradise Lost ). Meanwhile The Epic Gilgamesh is more old fashioned in
its verse Between the four books there are a variety of differences. These differences include subject

Many others disagree and see Satan in a more sympathetic sense. Although he is the antagonist, his
motives are very real and his anger is genuinely human. His motivations are ambitious and relatable.
In classical epics, the journey is the prime motivation for the heroes to literally demonstrate their
heroism. Paradise Lost is more of an inward journey. In fact, the main journey is taken, which is Satan
s fall from heaven, has occurred before the action takes place. So instead, we have an epic of plans ,
motivations, of ambitions; the climactic actions are mundane in comparison to the bloodshed of
Achilles, for example. Paradise Lost employs a dual narrative and remains focus on the two
interweaving stories. Classic epics give a great amount of attention to ancillary character and myths. (
Compare Milton s Paradise Lost ). In the Iliad, the rage of Diomedes is meant to show to battle and
bring glory to a side character, yet not giving any insight to the main story of Achilles revenge. This is
meant to depict multiple heroes. Finally, heroism. Classical epics see heroism as an act which includes
defeating the enemy with cunning wisdom and bloodshed. Paradise Lost portrays heroism in a silent
servitude and willing acceptance. When having prior knowledge of The Aeneid while reading Paradise
Lost, it is almost difficult to disregard the parallels which Milton draws, according to Hannah Smith. (

Ultrafast Phase-Transition Dynamics Of Solid Case Study
Materials Science: ultrafast Phase transition dynamics in solid state
Breaking the limits of picosecond temporal resolution (600 fs) in electron diffraction measurements
were first reported in Siwick et al. [15]. This gave the access to the atomic motion in the photo
induced solid liquid phase transition (melting) process of Aluminum. In this study, the long order
change traced as a function of time. The 20 nm thick Al sample was excited by a laser pulse fluence of
70 mJ/cm2. The long range order (present in the crystalline phase) disappear and a short range atomic
correlation (present in the liquid phase) were emerged which is a clear indication of a complete phase
translon process within 3.5 ps (Fig. 7a).
Moreover, the high brightness ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hence, Sciaini et al. [102] studied the structural changes in crystalline bismuth (Bi) as it undergoes a
phase transition (melting) due to laser excitation. The structure dynamics was probed by conducting
time resolved femtosecond electron diffraction. The time scale of this photo induced melting was
resolved from these measurements found to be in sub vibrational time scale (190 fs). The author
explained this fast melting transition due to the change in the potential energy surface of the lattice,
which causes a strong acceleration of the atoms along the longitudinal direction of the lattice and
efficient coupling of this motion to an unstable transverse vibrational mode. The obtained diffraction
dynamics curve showing the decay time of the crystalline Bi and the raising curve of the liquid Bi
phase is illustrated in Fig. 7c.
The improvement of the temporal resolution in UED to a few hundred femtoseconds ( illustrated in
(Fig. 2c). This development afforded the necessary atomic scale spatial and temporal resolutions to
study the phase transition and the related atomic motion of the solid state in real time and space. Gedik
et al. [63] studied the nonequilibrium phase transitions in cuprates (oxygen doped La_2 CuO_(4+δ)),

Women In The New Yam Family
The women in order to get married must be purchased or sought after and gifts among other things are
given to her family in order to have her. It shows how women are treated as property it can also show
affection in a way in order to have her as a wife you need to deserve her. When a woman does marry
she must be obedient and listen to her husband, plant only certain crops; they grew women s crops,
like coco yams, beans and cassava (3.28). They try so hard to set women apart from men. They are
respected in a way as mothers. When you need help you go to your mother s land to seek help because
that is where her body is buried because your mother is caring and loving. So women are shown as
forgiving loving, which are all good qualities but they can be seen as weak. Which in the tribe they are
seen as weak qualities or in general if you do not work you do nothing you are weak. Even though the
women help each other raise the children which is a big task considering all else they have to do.

Essay On My Childhood Day
During my childhood days, every single time it rained, I would wait just to hear the thunder. Every
lightning strike was so powerful with its terrifying sound, yet it worked with the same principle that
explained the bits of paper clinging to a charged fur cloth rubbed on a cat. It was very enchanting for
me to learn that all the extreme and massive events which took place could be explained by the same
laws which govern our daily experiences. Learning physics would unravel the nature of these events,
all around me. Every single time I gaze at the sky, I could not help but realise that those stars which
sparkle at a distance are nothing but bodies just like our sun and most of them are still bigger. During
my school days, my biggest awe was just to realise how miniscule we were and that the universe was
ever expanding. The most interesting fact for me was to admire the ... Show more content on

human brain and this is a joyous facet of science to me.
My curiosity to know and understand the workings of the things around me has led to my interest in

What Is The Theme Of Conflict In Lord Of The Flies
The book Lord of the Flies was written after the author William Golding came back from second
world war. William golding used his experiences from the conflict of the war to write a book that has
conflict as the core message. This is shown by the direct war between civiliation and savagary. It is
also shown by the underline descriptions of the children being opposite to each other. The first point in
the book is the conflict between civilation and savagary. The conflict between these two areas are
shown by the using imagery of the two characters who represent them. This is shown by the decription
of both ralph and jack, the protaganist and the antagonist. Ralph is shown within this book as The boy
with fair hair , the fair mentioned in this quote shows not only the colour of the boys hair but also has
a double meaning for the boy s nature. This shows that the boy is fair , kind, civilised. The colour of
the boy s hair also can symbolised that he is neutral or even kind because of the fair colour (i.e
white/blond)is lacking darkness ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The main quotes that show the island are The shore was fleged with palm trees and The long scar
smashed into the jungle . These quotes present the island as both hell and paradise. This can be seen
by the imagary of the palm trees and the language used to describe the parts of the island such as scar
and how the smash into the island. Both these words are veery negative showing that the island is
much like hell but the children see it as paradise because there are no parents that is why it is show in
both ways. The book The Lord of the Flies has the message of confict to the core. This in my opinion
is used to give the user insight into a battlefield. I belive that the writer has used children to make the
point more absorable and more understandable from all walks of life. The writer has used his

Compare And Contrast Mma And Boxing
A sport is a competitive game that emphasizes physical abilities. Boxing and MMA are two popular
sports. They are in the class of combat sports. Boxing is one of the oldest sports in the history of the
world. The Independent argues that the sport of boxing is one of the oldest sports still practiced to this
day. It is a sport where two opponents must face each other in the ring and fight till someone is
knocked out or until the round ends. The person with the most points which are obtained by punching
the opponent will win the match. MMA is a newer sport, a sport that has only been around for a
couple of decades. MMA is similar to boxing in a sense that two opponents fight each other. However,
there are many factors that make MMA significantly different from Boxing. ... Show more content on

There are many different variations and techniques of punching. Some of these punches are the jab,
the cross, the hook, and the uppercut. MMA stands for Mixed Martial Arts. As the name states, MMA
is many different martial arts and fighting styles mixed together. Some of those martial arts and
fighting styles are Muai Thai Kickboxing, Jiu Jitsu Grappling, and variations of wrestling and boxing.
Even though they are both combat sports, Boxing and MMA are significantly different. The
Independent states that MMA has certain aspects of boxing within the technique.
The rounds and timings are very different. Bleacherreport states that in Boxing, there are six to twelve
rounds and each one lasts three minutes. Bleacherreport also states that in MMA there are three
rounds, and they all last five minutes. Both sports are similar in a sense that there are timed rounds
instead of quarters such as in other sports, but that is the only similarity because the round s timings
are different. It is significant that the timings are different because the training of the athletes will be
built around how much time that they have.

Greed
How Much Land Does a Man Need? by Leo Tolstoy is a short story that addresses the concept of
greed and how it changes the protagonist, Pakhom. Bryan Aubrey, Ph.D, explains that How Much
Land Does a Man Need? illustrates the moral point that a man must know when enough is enough. He
must not continually seek more and more material possessions, unrelated to his personal need.
(Aubrey 198). By illustrating the rise and fall of Pakhom, Tolstoy successfully conveys the dangers of
covetous envy, and the moral dilemmas that one will face when enthralled with such sins. Pakhom, a
lowly Russian peasant, is not satisfied with merely surviving and desires more land to own. Wishful
thinking, however, brings him right into the Devil s hands. By saying If I had plenty of land, I shouldn

Due to his boasting, Pakhom is plagued by the sins of greed and envy until the day he dies. This curse
at first seems to be a gift, as Pakhom begins to gain more and more land. But the truth is that Pakhom
is in the grip of greed.Being greedy is to want more and more in a way that is unrelated to actual need.
He sees the acquisition of land as a way of freeing himself from anxiety, but in fact, the more land he
acquires, the more anxious and troubled he becomes. (Overview of How Much Land Does a Man
Need? 192). For example, when Pakhom moved to a larger plot of land he was pleased at first but
when he got used to it he began to think that even here he had not enough land. (Tolstoy 725). Pakhom
s solution to his problems is more land. He always has a reason for wanting more land that is good
enough to convince him he is right.

Archetypes Of Helen
Let me preface this with that I knew absolutely nothing about Helen of Troy nor of Ancient Greece or
its beliefs or values, I just always wanted to visit. What I learned is that I do not categorize her as a
femme fatale. A femme for certain but I do not believe that she fits that fatale archetype. Per myth, her
father was Zeus or Tyndareus, her mother was Leda or Nemesis. Her father, now King Tyndareus (not
Zeus) had to create the Oath of Tyndareus due to the overwhelming number of suitors that wanted to
marry Helen. Fast forward to Paris and The Apple of Discord and Aphrodite sending him to most
beautiful woman on earth, Helen, her subsequent abduction or seduction, thus causing the Trojan War.
Now the legend of Helen s conception is where it gets strange and perverse, Zeus either raped Leda or
Nemesis in the form of a swan or she Leda was impregnated by Tyndareus. If Leda was the mother
she had two eggs (yes like a swan), and out of the two eggs came Helen and her siblings however if
Nemesis was the mother, she was so mad with Zeus for the rape that she ... Show more content on

Helen is highlighted as a woman meant to suffer death at the hands of her ex husband Menelaus back
in Greece. I chose this piece due to the fact that I believe that it illustrates again how Helen cannot be
a femme fatale. Helen is yet again a pawn, without a voice in her own life. Beauty is certainly a value
however men make all the decisions. I believe that both works expound upon the understanding of
Helen of Troy, albeit the poetry of that time is hard for me to decipher. In Homer s Iliad, I believe
Helen is blamed for the war and it casts her more as the femme fatale, not just the femme. In The
Trojan Women, she is meant to suffer for leaving with Paris and I believe this completely muddies the
water for what I currently know about the femme fatale archetype. Her beauty, being the main value,

Reflective Essay In English
The language that I first learned to speak at home was English. My family, considering my father s
side of the family is Mexican, has always loved the Mexican culture. They love the food, the music,
the history, and the language. When my parents learned about an elementary school that was able to
teach me both English and Spanish, they jumped at the opportunity to enroll me, and later my sister,
into the school. My parents made it a priority that my sister and I enroll because they were never able
to learn how to speak, read, write, or understand Spanish very well, so they wanted us to have this
fantastic opportunity. They also decided to enroll us so that we are able to talk with our family
members who live in Mexico that speak no English at all. Although I was too young at the time to ask
to be enrolled into that school, with my knowledge now I know that I definitely would have advocated
for that to happen.
Throughout my life, school has played a critical role in increasing my knowledge about the target
language and about the culture of the target language. Because my parents do not speak Spanish, they
were not able to help my advancement in the language as much as they and I would have liked them
to. They did, however, make a fantastic effort to teach me as much as they knew about the Mexican
culture. Being in a school with an immersion program has aided my development immensely. In
elementary school, having to speak Spanish throughout my whole day was one of the most

Cerebral Palsy Affect A Patient s Life
To what extent does Cerebral Palsy affect a patient s life compared to someone without the disability?
Cerebral Palsy is an umbrella term for a group of disabilities associated with movement and posture
(Victoria Government, 2014; What is Cerebral Palsy? 2014). Every patient of this disability will look
different and move differently due to the affected location within the brain (What is Cerebral Palsy?
2014). Cerebral Palsy will appear as a muscle disability, however, it is caused by the cerebrum being
damaged. The cerebrum is responsible for memory, learning ability, muscle control, and
communication skills; this is why some people with cerebral palsy struggle with communication and
learning (Nordqvist, C, 2015).

Depending on the injured brain, diagnoses can take up to five years, but eighteen months is the most
common (Golland, 2014; Rosie, 2016; National institute of neurological disorders and stroke, 2016).
Even though patients are diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, the cause of their diagnosis is not known
(What is Cerebral Palsy? 2014; Victoria Government, 2014). Sadly, there is no cure for Cerebral Palsy,
this affect patients extremely knowing there is no hope to get better (Marriott, 2016; Mazzeo, 2016).
Patients suffer chronic pain throughout their lives which makes life uncomfortable for them compared
to someone without the disability. Cerebral Palsy patients have a risk of intellectual disability, poor
mobility, poor vision and poor hearing. This strongly affects patients by them not being able to do
everyday activities. (Marriott, 2016; National institute of neurological disorders and stroke, 2016).
Signs and symptoms vary among people because different parts of the brain can be injured even
though Cerebral Palsy is mainly revealed by a stilted gait, movement and posture from muscle
spasticity (What is Cerebral Palsy? 2014; Marriott, 2016). An individual living with Cerebral Palsy is
estimated $43,431 each year and approximately $1 million, in addition to normal living costs
(Cerebral Palsy Australia, 2016; Cummins, 2016; Marriott, 2016). This cost is a huge burden placed
on them and their families

The Role of Animals in the Unbearable Lightness of Being...
Since animals, usually pets, are sometimes an essential part of one s life, it is not surprising that we
find frequent references to its role in works of social realism, such as Wislawa Szymborska s Poems
New and Collected and Milan Kundera s Unbearable Lightness of Being. Animals in literature could
be used to symbolize all sorts of things, but in particular, animals may represent the personality of a
character. This is because as humans and animals co exist in the same atmosphere, certain aspects of a
character reveal themselves in the compassion or even hatred towards the animal. Since animals are
often known to trigger the interests of humans, the attitude of the humans towards the animals
contributes much to character revelation. Both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A life that never ends?
He d turn his ruddy rump as if to say
Such life he neither bans nor recommends
We can see the monkey as a god now, a figure that even has power to give life that never ends, such a
contrast after the total mistreatment, above. We see how the animals determine human characteristics:
either overly mistreating, or overly obsessed.
In the poem, Cat in an empty apartment, Szymborska again criticizes the uncaring characteristic of
humans and the role of animals in the poem as a mere irritation or a vexation.
Die – you can t do that to a cat
Since what can a cat do in an empty apartment?
Climb the walls?
Rub against the furniture?
From this we can perceive that animals in Szymborska s poems serve to prove that in their co
existence with humans, they are treated unfairly and the human characteristics of cruel superiority
over animals are evident in the works.
Later in the Unbearable Lightness of Being, Tomas and Tereza moves to a collective farm in Rural

who like Tereza, shares a close relationship with an animal companion: a pig named Mephisto, which

The presence of cockroaches is often detected by their damage, smell or by the fecal matter (called
frass ) they deposit. These are clues which can aid in diagnosing a cockroach problem. Cockroaches
may use such things as glue or paste (especially from animal based materials), starch and certain color
dyes as foods. As a result, items such as stamps, envelopes, bindings of older books, draperies and
occasionally wallpapers may show signs of feeding. The size of the mandible marks and the apparent
degree of vigor with which they feed are indications of the type of roach which did the damage. The
size and shape of fecal droppings are also clues to the cockroach species involved.
The most important aspect of cockroach damage derives from their habit of feeding and harboring in
damp and unsanitary places such as sewers, garbage disposals, kitchens, bathrooms, and storage areas
indoors. Filth from these sources is spread by the cockroaches to food supplies, food preparation
surfaces, dishes, utensils, and other surfaces. Far more food is contaminated by cockroaches than they
are able to eat. Diseases transmitted as a result of these habits were discussed earlier. These same
habits are why people are so disgusted and repulsed by the mere presence of cockroaches. For many
people, personal disgust and the social stigma attached to cockroaches produce a complete lack of
tolerance for any cockroaches in their home or elsewhere.

Analyzing The Evangelist Portraits By The Codex Amiatinus
Abstracts
Nick Baker (Princethorpe College)
Putting your Best Foot Forward: Reviewing the Evangelist Portraits in the Codex Amiatinus
The Christ in Majesty page (fol. 796v) has attracted a great deal of scholarly attention over the years.
Given that it shows Christ flanked by two angels, surrounded by circular bands and enclosed within a
jewelled border, there are many elements for the art historian to consider. Unfortunately, the portraits
and symbols of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John have not been furnished with the attention they so
rightly deserve. This paper will revisit these images and attempt to place them into a wider artistic
context, thereby suggesting further theological meanings to the contemporary religious. It will also
highlight the result of recent photographic work on the page, conducted under ultraviolet light, which
has uncovered much more about the design of these portraits than has previously been known. Meg

attention to the Tabernacle diagram, or Temple page of the Codex as it has been variously identified

The Van Allen belts consist of an inner and more concentrated belt of protons at a distance of 3,600
km and an outer and less concentrated belt of electrons at a distance of 10,000 km~cite{wilson}. In
the most intense regions of the inner belt, exposure can be lethal after a few tens of hours~cite{smart}.
This created uncertainty at NASA for whether or not humans could ever travel to the Moon and
beyond. In response, the scientist who discovered the Van Allen belts, James Van Allen, proposed a
controversial method of removing the trapped radiation. He suggested that a nuclear detonation in
space might cause the trapped protons to escape from the Earth s magnetic field. The theory was never
directly tested, but a similar test that detonated a 1.4 megaton bomb in the atmosphere showed that in
fact more radiation was added as a result~cite{popsci}.
The second source of space radiation is called a Solar Particle Event or SPE. This type of radiation
originates from solar ejections of charged particles, usually as X rays~cite{nasa}. The cause of an SPE

had handicaps above 18, and bought new equipment every two to three years.
2. Compare with woods and irons, putters were relatively inexpensive at around $100 each. Because
putting was viewed as the most critical aspect to the game and because most golfers were weak
putters, they tended to update their putters fairly frequently and with less product research. In fact,
many golfers owned five or more different putters

Agricultural And Industrial Revolution
There were many developments in the agricultural and industrial revolutions in Russia and England
starting with the doubling of factories and urbanization. The effect was both good and bad because it
helped to give people jobs and be able to get money to survive and have better housing situations that
lasted long term, but it was bad because children would work as young as 5 years old and they would
get hurt very easily though in 1819 that was put to a stop by the Factory Act. The people who built the
factories were getting more rich and Manchester became the center of the British Cotton industry. Yet
the employes were getting underpaid and very overworked for all the work they were doing and little
difference was being made to their living/working

Noh Drama Essay
In the same way Japanese poetry often alludes to or derives from the canon of poetry that precedes it,
noh plays are often based off of classical Japanese literary sources that form the framework for the
play s themes and moral message. Many of these plays reference poems from revered anthologies,
such as the Shinkokinshū, within the play s dialogue, but it is the monogatari or tales that provide the
foundation for certain noh plotlines because of their vast array of character references and plotlines.
These tales are the primary sources of information for two plays in particular written by the famous
Japanese playwright Zeami: Atsumori and Matsukaze. The warrior play Atsumori draws from the
famous war epic The Tale of Heike to further an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I ll go look for one of their generals to grapple with! as the Taira flee to their ships (Watson et. al. 98
99). This readiness to fight and provoke is an indicator of his rash and unrefined personality. In
comparison, Atsumori is young and refined, an ideal court gentleman, as seen in his dress and
possessions. He is lightly powdered and with black teeth and carries a brocade bag with a flute in it;
both of these descriptions signify his elegance and cause Atsumori s enemies to weep over his death
and state, These high born people how gentle and refined they are! (Watson, et. al. 99 100) It is also
important to note that Atsumori does not beg for his life at Kumagai s hands, nor does he appear to
fear death, instead saying, Just take my head and be quick about it! though Kumagai had previously
offered him a chance to escape before the other Genji warriors closed in (Watson, et. al. 99). Kumagai
and Atsumori s contrasting identities and their interactions together provide an anti war message of the
needlessly destructive nature of war. The gentle youth is destroyed meaninglessly and his music is
taken with him. Kumagai can only seek solace and a way to repent by becoming a Buddhist monk in
the end. As war tales such as Tales of Heike were often recorded from an oral tradition that involved
the chanting of these stories by blind

Research Paper On Victorianism
Jehanzeb Siddiqui English September 4th 2014 Victorian England Essay Part 1: Victorianism defined
Victorianism is an era which is difficult to understand as it is spread over several periods giving rise to
many events. On one hand it is considered as an era of power and paradox while on the other hand this
era also describes Victorians as confident, socially responsible people having a vision of the world
beyond. The problem of describing Victorianism has also been well addressed by M.H. Abrams in arts
and literature, who himself was a Victorian. Part 2: Victorian Social History Browny was a poor man
who used to work at a cotton manufacturing factory where his employment allowed him to sit in the
same position for a series of hours in a heated atmosphere to do the work. Just ... Show more content

Part 3 B: Victorian Art The subject of the painting is The Rainbow in which the artist describes the
mountainous region with valleys on both sides of the painting and stream of water flowing through it
over a large distance while a rainbow reaches down to the earth from the sky. The artist seems to
provide nature s lovely side within this rocky world and that people should focus on the better side
this world rather than worrying about the darker side. Part 4: Major Literary Figures Thomas Carlyle
had examined the society of the Victorians very carefully and spoke for the Victorians. According to
him, people who were relying on technological innovations can t rely on those innovations only to
lead their lives as these innovations won t lead man, instead spirituality is the main concern of their
lives. He directed people towards spirituality and grabbed their attention through his writings. Either
his readers were repelled by his work or used to like him through his ideas. Later his work emphasized

The Need For Music Education Essay

The Need for Music Education
As society continues to progress throughout time, the common intelligence rates of the average
student seems to be diminishing throughout the years. The lack of progress in the nation s schools may
be a resultant of less brain stimulation and the lower expectations that linger around society as a
whole. With that in mind, there remains to be an abundance of effective ways in which the stimulating
of children s brains can influence a natural increase in the average students intelligence and student
productivity. With the addition of music education in schools, students can potentially gain many
unconscientious abilities to perform better in school and on standardized tests that may dictate their
futures. Scientists have proven that listening to music, specifically the classical genre of music,
improves spatial temporal reasoning which is the ability to move objects within the mind to solve
multi step problems. It has also been proven that students who endure through the complexities of
some form of musical training have seemingly higher intelligence quotient (IQ) levels. Furthermore,
there is evidence which proves that students who not only studied music but also continued their
studies for one or more years had a meaningful increase in SAT scores than those that did not. In
attempts to increase average intelligence, natural improvement of students, student productivity, and
the ability to reason,

Compare And Contrast The Lottery By Shirley Jackson
Following the crowd can have disastrous consequences is something both first they came by Martin
Niemoller and The lottery by Shirley Jackson have in common. But for different reasons. Both stories
are different but are also the same. Both stories share the same theme but for different reasons. So
these two stories have a lot in common but somethings that are different, so in this essay I will talk
about how they are the same and also different.
Some ways that The Lottery and First they came are the same is that they both share the same theme.
For example, they both share the theme that they both have disastrous consequences from following
the crowd. For instance, in the lottery Tessie follows the crowd by participating in the lottery with
everyone else. And in First they came martin followed the crowd by not speaking up. The two
characters not speaking up led to their death. Which is something both stories had in common.
Another way that you can compare both stories is that both of the characters didn t stand up for what s
right when they should have. For instance, in the poem First they came in lines 1, 3, and 4 it says and I
did not speak out so this means he did not speak out for other people. But when he got called he
expected someone to speak out instead. In the story The Lottery Tessie did not speak out about how
the bad The Lottery was. For example, the entire story Tessie didn t say the lottery was a bad idea until
she was chosen to get stoned. For instance,

A Moral Examination of Roger Kumble s Cruel Intentions ...
I can t remember ever seeing a film with more moral problems and issues than Roger Kumbles Cruel
Intentions. Although the film is intended to be a dark comedy and a teenage version of Dangerous
Liaisons, Cruel Intentions is a mature and often shocking look at a potential realistic situation played
up as a fantasy tale that offers a sickening example of the moral decay present in our society. Morals
seem to change from generation to generation, and as time goes on it seems that at one time what was
disgusting and immoral in our society is now second nature and pure entertainment for today s
generation. An example of this might be to take the idea of a show consisting of uncensored sexual
intercourse, and having it actually become a feasible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The opening scene sets the immoral tone for the entire movie when Sebastian humiliates his therapist
s daughter with nude pictures of her posted on the Internet (his reasoning: she was charging too
much). He then admits that he is tired of sleeping with these insipid debutantes and wants a challenge
worthy of his talents. At the same time Kathryn is upset that her ex boyfriend dumped her for a ditzy
klutz named Cecile (Selma Blair), and wants Sebastian to pop her cherry, so to speak, to humiliate the
boyfriend. As it turns out, this is nothing new for Sebastian, who has a reputation as a master of
deflowering virgins. He agrees and of course succeeds but he has more challenging goals in mind.
While turning through 17 Magazine one day, Sebastian came across the young Annette Hargrove
(Reese Witherspoon), who happens to be the first character the audience meets with morals. Annette
wrote an article titled Why I plan to wait: A virgin s manifesto , where she goes into depth about all
the reasons that she won t surrender her virginity until she falls in love. While reading the article,
Sebastian refers to her as daddies little angel, the paradigm of chastity and virtue and proudly states
that this young virgin would be his greatest conquest to date, and explains the wonders it would do for
his reputation. The only reason that this

  • 2. The Issues Of The Lgbt Community Abstract Research has proven that people are able to make judgements with a fair amount of accuracy. These perceptions are drawn from cultural stereotypes that lead to categorization of others into social categories. The LGBT community has been a subject of interest over the past 25 30 years. Research has been dedicated into searching for the neurological, biological and social correlates associated with this community. The main focus of the research has been on the ability to identify people who are gay. The term gaydar has been coined by different researchers in the field and it relates to the ability to perceive another individual who is gay. However, the research involved has been strictly tied to psychology and as a result its implications are subjective in nature. The current work utilized event related potentials to measure the cognitive processes associated with making the determination of one s sexual orientation. 21 heterosexual and homosexual male participants had electrodes placed on their scalp to measure their brain activity in response to 120 pictures of gay or straight men. Results found that homosexual males exerted more effort when processing the faces of the targets. Sexual Orientation Perception Kirkpatrick (2000) contends that homosexuality has been an element of the human experience from the outset. There has been a considerable amount of research attempting to identify the correlates associated with homosexual behavior. Most data ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Oedipus The King Pride Essay Man s Greatest Enemies Although Oedipus is an ideal leader who once saved the city of Thebes from the monstrous Sphinx, his fatal flaws of anger and pride ultimately lead to his tragic downfall. Oedipus s harsh temper leads him to make rash decisions and often causes him to show disrespect to people. For example, Oedipus displays his quick temper when the blind prophet, Tiresias, accuses him of murdering Laius, the former king of Thebes. Although Tiresias is physically blind, he sees the truth, while Oedipus sees but is blind to the truth. Oedipus becomes furious with the old man and begins to yell at him for this ghastly accusation. His more significant flaw, his pride, fuels his quick temper which leads to a greater dilemma for the king. Seconds before the shepherd enters, Oedipus compares himself to a prophet when he tells the elders his opinions about the man approaching. When the old man refuses to tell Oedipus the truth, Oedipus threatens to hurt and even to kill the poor man, demonstrating Oedipus s hubris fueling his temper. Perhaps the most significant example of his vanity occurs when the messenger from Corinth delivers the news to Jocasta and Oedipus revealing the death of Oedipus s father. • 7. Story Of An Hour Love According to many dictionaries, when looking up the definition of love, you are sure to find something along the lines of an intense feeling of deep affection. If you were to ask if this were true, the chances of the answer being no is slim to none. Love is about being with someone no matter the differences of opinion, through sickness and in health, in the bad times and the good times. You love that person unconditionally and without a shadow of a doubt they are the one person you want to spend forever with. Although this may be true in some instances, love as portrayed in The Story of an Hour is unseemly. The idea of love is ironic in this story because of how ecstatic Mrs. Mallard reacted to what an intensely in love wife would think is heart breaking news. Mrs. Mallard seemed extremely over joyed and a feeling of freedom consumed her when she learned of the news. In the short story, The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin, Mrs. Mallard learns of news that her husband has died while on the job. Good And Evil In Frankenstein The novel tells the story of the scientist Victor Frankenstein who loses touch with reality while creating a new form of life, a monstrous being who nevertheless has human character traits. Yet, the creature becomes only a monster due to denied love and rejection by Victor Frankenstein. Thus, he swears to take revenge, transforming into a monster. First, one has the impression that Victor s interests in creating a being is only of honourable nature: I thought that if I could bestow animation upon lifeless matter, I might in process of time (although I now find it impossible) renew life where death had apparently devoted the body of corruption (Shelley 53). However, he seems to be an unreliable narrator. The reader develops doubts whether his true intentions are as noble as he tries to present. It appears that the true interest is quite egoistic, as he desires to gain fame: a light so brilliant and wondrous, yet so simple, that while I became dizzy with the immensity of the prospect which it illustrated, I was surprised, that among so many men of genius who had directed their enquiries towards the same science, that I alone should be reserved to discover so astonishing a secret (Shelley ... • 11. Modern Indie Music Movement Imagine the discovery of an art form so abstract and different, one of which possessed with strange ideals and seemingly free artists to create and dispose at their will. These are the basic attributes of what we call independent, or indie, music. Independent music is a movement meant to represent the opposition of being trite an anti establishment fuck you to the mass marketing of originality. Independent music started as bands that were on small and relatively low budget labels that had a do it yourself attitude and retained an outsider and underground perspective. Around this time in the United States, the term indie was particularly associated with the intense, distortion heavy sounds of the Pixies, Hüsker Dü, Minutemen, Meat Puppets, Dinosaur Jr., and The Replacements. The 1990 s proceeded to bring massive changes to the indie rock scene. Grunge (a subgenre of rock that fuses elements of punk rock, heavy metal, and distorted electric guitar) bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Hole, and Alice in Chains broke into the mainstream, achieving commercial chart success and widespread exposure. As a result of indie rock bands moving into the mainstream, the term indie lost its original counter cultural context and began to refer to the new, commercially more accessible form of music that was now achieving mainstream success. • 12. Academic And Artistic Areas Of The Arts Nearly everyone accepts the fact that no two students are alike, so why do we, as a society, expect all students to achieve high marks in the same courses? The arts have long been seen as extra and have not received the same level of respect as traditional academics like algebra and biology. Music, painting, and photography, are just as skill based and require similar amounts of time and effort as their STEM counterparts. The idea that students who do not perform well in academic classes, even though they excel in the arts, are unintelligent is a false belief. Both academic and artistic areas require work and practice. Music requires learning how to read notes and how to actually play an instrument fluidly, memorizing the individual tones created by the different parts of the instrument. Composing their own music would require a lot of effort and thought as well. Visual arts, like painting and photography, include their own set of skills and techniques that need to be properly combined in order to produce varied and visually pleasing work. It is not just having an idea pop into your head and slapping it onto some paper or snapping a quick photo and printing it out. Studying literature requires students to think critically and look beyond the surface of the text to find out the more complex ideas the author wanted to get across. Another factor that needs to be taken into account is style of thinking. Not everyone s though process is the same. There ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ranging from last words of criminals sentenced to death to sermons about crime and religion, crime stories have presented criminals to the masses in different lights and with different opinions. However, no matter the purpose of the writer, most crime accounts have the same effect: they make criminals likable to people. There are popular television shows that employ this technique in order to better the world. In Ellen Degeneres daytime talk show she satirizes politicians through a skit that pokes fun at people who are against issues such as: gay marriage and reaching across the aisle. The other candidates look angry or confused; then, she claims that the best support is Ellen Underwear and they all nod their heads in agreement. This satirizes people who are followers and just go along with what other people tell them. • 20. Literature Review On Social Movements II. LITERATURE REVIEW Social movements (SMs) have been part of society s history and politics for centuries. For some authors, they started with the French Revolution and have been constantly rising and falling depending on the existent socio political climate (Reichmann Fernandez Buey, 1994). For Charles Tilly, the nineteenth laid the groundwork for the modern social movements of the twentieth century (Tilly, 1998). Karl Marx also studied and developed the concept of SMs; he viewed them as a means of achieving a deep social change through class conflict (Tarrow, 2011). Studied in relationship to the rise of globalisation and social media, the expansion and modernisation of SMs has become increasingly prominent in the academic literature of the last century. Accordingly, Globalisation has made it possible for individuals to empower themselves through participation in supranational organisations and international organisms that challenge governmental authority. As evidenced by Manuel Castells, populations around the world are now able to come together to affect change by expressing ideas and demonstrating in support of pressing issues (Castells, 2009). Chile has been no exception to the trend of globalisation and has participated in and developed a number of strong international social movements. The academic literature on social movements is vast. • 21. Similarities Between Paradise Lost And Paradise Lost Paradise Lost comparison to three epics of antiquity There are many ways to compare and contrast Paradise Lost with the three other epics of antiquity. The epics are Paradise Lost, Aeneid, The Epic Gilgamesh, and The Iliad. The most obvious difference is era. Paradise Lost is an epic poem from the 17th century and is written in blank verse which is the most modern phrasing method. According to an article on Enotes, out of the other three epics, the Iliad and Aeneid came from the same dactyllic family. ( Compare Milton s Paradise Lost ). His motivations are ambitious and relatable. In classical epics, the journey is the prime motivation for the heroes to literally demonstrate their heroism. Paradise Lost is more of an inward journey. In fact, the main journey is taken, which is Satan s fall from heaven, has occurred before the action takes place. So instead, we have an epic of plans , motivations, of ambitions; the climactic actions are mundane in comparison to the bloodshed of Achilles, for example. Paradise Lost employs a dual narrative and remains focus on the two interweaving stories. Classic epics give a great amount of attention to ancillary character and myths. ( Compare Milton s Paradise Lost ). In the Iliad, the rage of Diomedes is meant to show to battle and bring glory to a side character, yet not giving any insight to the main story of Achilles revenge. This is meant to depict multiple heroes. Finally, heroism. Classical epics see heroism as an act which includes defeating the enemy with cunning wisdom and bloodshed. Paradise Lost portrays heroism in a silent servitude and willing acceptance. [102] studied the structural changes in crystalline bismuth (Bi) as it undergoes a phase transition (melting) due to laser excitation. The structure dynamics was probed by conducting time resolved femtosecond electron diffraction. The time scale of this photo induced melting was resolved from these measurements found to be in sub vibrational time scale (190 fs). The author explained this fast melting transition due to the change in the potential energy surface of the lattice, which causes a strong acceleration of the atoms along the longitudinal direction of the lattice and efficient coupling of this motion to an unstable transverse vibrational mode. The obtained diffraction dynamics curve showing the decay time of the crystalline Bi and the raising curve of the liquid Bi phase is illustrated in Fig. 7c. The improvement of the temporal resolution in UED to a few hundred femtoseconds ( illustrated in (Fig. 2c). • 25. What Is The Theme Of Conflict In Lord Of The Flies The book Lord of the Flies was written after the author William Golding came back from second world war. William golding used his experiences from the conflict of the war to write a book that has conflict as the core message. This is shown by the direct war between civiliation and savagary. It is also shown by the underline descriptions of the children being opposite to each other. The first point in the book is the conflict between civilation and savagary. The conflict between these two areas are shown by the using imagery of the two characters who represent them. This is shown by the decription of both ralph and jack, the protaganist and the antagonist. Ralph is shown within this book as The boy with fair hair , the fair mentioned in this quote shows not only the colour of the boys hair but also has a double meaning for the boy s nature. Bryan Aubrey, Ph.D, explains that How Much Land Does a Man Need? illustrates the moral point that a man must know when enough is enough. He must not continually seek more and more material possessions, unrelated to his personal need. (Aubrey 198). By illustrating the rise and fall of Pakhom, Tolstoy successfully conveys the dangers of covetous envy, and the moral dilemmas that one will face when enthralled with such sins. What I learned is that I do not categorize her as a femme fatale. A femme for certain but I do not believe that she fits that fatale archetype. Per myth, her father was Zeus or Tyndareus, her mother was Leda or Nemesis. Her father, now King Tyndareus (not Zeus) had to create the Oath of Tyndareus due to the overwhelming number of suitors that wanted to marry Helen. Fast forward to Paris and The Apple of Discord and Aphrodite sending him to most beautiful woman on earth, Helen, her subsequent abduction or seduction, thus causing the Trojan War. Now the legend of Helen s conception is where it gets strange and perverse, Zeus either raped Leda or Nemesis in the form of a swan or she Leda was impregnated by Tyndareus. Beauty is certainly a value however men make all the decisions. I believe that both works expound upon the understanding of Helen of Troy, albeit the poetry of that time is hard for me to decipher. Since animals, usually pets, are sometimes an essential part of one s life, it is not surprising that we find frequent references to its role in works of social realism, such as Wislawa Szymborska s Poems New and Collected and Milan Kundera s Unbearable Lightness of Being. Animals in literature could be used to symbolize all sorts of things, but in particular, animals may represent the personality of a character. This is because as humans and animals co exist in the same atmosphere, certain aspects of a character reveal themselves in the compassion or even hatred towards the animal. These are clues which can aid in diagnosing a cockroach problem. Cockroaches may use such things as glue or paste (especially from animal based materials), starch and certain color dyes as foods. As a result, items such as stamps, envelopes, bindings of older books, draperies and occasionally wallpapers may show signs of feeding. The size of the mandible marks and the apparent degree of vigor with which they feed are indications of the type of roach which did the damage. The size and shape of fecal droppings are also clues to the cockroach species involved. The Van Allen belts consist of an inner and more concentrated belt of protons at a distance of 3,600 km and an outer and less concentrated belt of electrons at a distance of 10,000 km~cite{wilson}. In the most intense regions of the inner belt, exposure can be lethal after a few tens of hours~cite{smart}. This created uncertainty at NASA for whether or not humans could ever travel to the Moon and beyond. In response, the scientist who discovered the Van Allen belts, James Van Allen, proposed a controversial method of removing the trapped radiation. He suggested that a nuclear detonation in space might cause the trapped protons to escape from the Earth s magnetic field. The theory was never directly tested, but a similar test that detonated a 1.4 megaton bomb in the atmosphere showed that in fact more radiation was added as a result~cite{popsci}. The second source of space radiation is called a Solar Particle Event or SPE. This type of radiation originates from solar ejections of charged particles, usually as X rays~cite{nasa}. The cause of an SPE is generally attributed to a loss of ideal MHD (magnetohydrodynamics) or stability within the Sun s atmosphere~cite{forbes}. Although SPE s can eject over a billion tons of matter into space, the Earths magnetosphere can deflect most of the charged particles. Outside of the Earths magnetosphere, though, the dosage of an SPE can be lethal in a matter of hours~cite{nasa, smart}. In 1972, when Apollo 17 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Like Nike and Adidas, Callaway has become a well known golf brand that customers have treated it as a professional sign. So there is difficulty for the new brand to threaten Callaway s current market. Power of suppliers: 1. As the case mentioned, Callaway adjusted the wholesale prices of Big Bertha metal woods rather infrequently because they are confident in their own products with so many efforts on budget and R D. They strongly believed that after using the products, customers would understand and accept the reason why their products prices were higher than others . 2. Callaway spent lots of money on R D, and that was why the prices were higher. So, for beginning golf customers, buying new Callaway clubs was a daunting task, even if Callaway s target market aimed at the average golf player rather than professional golf player. Powers of buyers: 1. CGC s target market Average golfers (defined as playing 10 rounds minimum per year), generally had handicaps above 18, and bought new equipment every two to three years. 2. Compare with woods and irons, putters were relatively inexpensive at around $100 each. Because putting was viewed as the most critical aspect to the game and because most golfers were weak putters, they tended to update their putters fairly frequently and with less product research. In fact, many golfers owned five or more different putters Threats of substitute s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 42. Noh Drama Essay In the same way Japanese poetry often alludes to or derives from the canon of poetry that precedes it, noh plays are often based off of classical Japanese literary sources that form the framework for the play s themes and moral message. Many of these plays reference poems from revered anthologies, such as the Shinkokinshū, within the play s dialogue, but it is the monogatari or tales that provide the foundation for certain noh plotlines because of their vast array of character references and plotlines. These tales are the primary sources of information for two plays in particular written by the famous Japanese playwright Zeami: Atsumori and Matsukaze. This readiness to fight and provoke is an indicator of his rash and unrefined personality. In comparison, Atsumori is young and refined, an ideal court gentleman, as seen in his dress and possessions. He is lightly powdered and with black teeth and carries a brocade bag with a flute in it; both of these descriptions signify his elegance and cause Atsumori s enemies to weep over his death and state, These high born people how gentle and refined they are! (Watson, et. al. 99 100) It is also important to note that Atsumori does not beg for his life at Kumagai s hands, nor does he appear to fear death, instead saying, Just take my head and be quick about it! though Kumagai had previously offered him a chance to escape before the other Genji warriors closed in (Watson, et. al. 99). Kumagai and Atsumori s contrasting identities and their interactions together provide an anti war message of the needlessly destructive nature of war. The gentle youth is destroyed meaninglessly and his music is taken with him. Kumagai can only seek solace and a way to repent by becoming a Buddhist monk in the end. • 45. The Need For Music Education Essay Brandon Moore Haga Humanities 9 November 2016 The Need for Music Education As society continues to progress throughout time, the common intelligence rates of the average student seems to be diminishing throughout the years. The lack of progress in the nation s schools may be a resultant of less brain stimulation and the lower expectations that linger around society as a whole. With that in mind, there remains to be an abundance of effective ways in which the stimulating of children s brains can influence a natural increase in the average students intelligence and student productivity. With the addition of music education in schools, students can potentially gain many unconscientious abilities to perform better in school and on standardized tests that may dictate their futures. Scientists have proven that listening to music, specifically the classical genre of music, improves spatial temporal reasoning which is the ability to move objects within the mind to solve multi step problems. It has also been proven that students who endure through the complexities of some form of musical training have seemingly higher intelligence quotient (IQ) levels. Furthermore, there is evidence which proves that students who not only studied music but also continued their studies for one or more years had a meaningful increase in SAT scores than those that did not. In attempts to increase average intelligence, natural improvement of students, student productivity, and the ability to reason, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Compare And Contrast The Lottery By Shirley Jackson Following the crowd can have disastrous consequences is something both first they came by Martin Niemoller and The lottery by Shirley Jackson have in common. But for different reasons. Both stories are different but are also the same. Both stories share the same theme but for different reasons. So these two stories have a lot in common but somethings that are different, so in this essay I will talk about how they are the same and also different. Some ways that The Lottery and First they came are the same is that they both share the same theme. For example, they both share the theme that they both have disastrous consequences from following the crowd. For instance, in the lottery Tessie follows the crowd by participating in the lottery with everyone else. And in First they came martin followed the crowd by not speaking up. The two characters not speaking up led to their death. Which is something both stories had in common. Another way that you can compare both stories is that both of the characters didn t stand up for what s right when they should have. For instance, in the poem First they came in lines 1, 3, and 4 it says and I did not speak out so this means he did not speak out for other people. But when he got called he expected someone to speak out instead. In the story The Lottery Tessie did not speak out about how the bad The Lottery was. Although the film is intended to be a dark comedy and a teenage version of Dangerous Liaisons, Cruel Intentions is a mature and often shocking look at a potential realistic situation played up as a fantasy tale that offers a sickening example of the moral decay present in our society. Morals seem to change from generation to generation, and as time goes on it seems that at one time what was disgusting and immoral in our society is now second nature and pure entertainment for today s generation. The opening scene sets the immoral tone for the entire movie when Sebastian humiliates his therapist s daughter with nude pictures of her posted on the Internet (his reasoning: she was charging too much). At the same time Kathryn is upset that her ex boyfriend dumped her for a ditzy klutz named Cecile (Selma Blair), and wants Sebastian to pop her cherry, so to speak, to humiliate the boyfriend. As it turns out, this is nothing new for Sebastian, who has a reputation as a master of deflowering virgins. He agrees and of course succeeds but he has more challenging goals in mind. While turning through 17 Magazine one day, Sebastian came across the young Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon), who happens to be the first character the audience meets with morals. Annette wrote an article titled Why I plan to wait: A virgin s manifesto , where she goes into depth about all the reasons that she won t surrender her virginity until she falls in love.
