Epic Theatre Essay
Acting unit
September December 2016
Edmund Richmond price
Introduction
Within this final log I shall explain the two contrasting styles of theatre that were covered within the
lesson i.e. naturalism and physical theatre, include examples of exercises that were covered in the
lessons with examples of my notes and follow up with a conclusion and evaluation.
Attributes of Brechtian epic theatre
Firstly when watching a Brechtian piece the most apparent is that there is no offstage. When a character
no longer needs to be relevant the actor must instead simply blend into the background an example of
this in a production of the threepenny opera is that a beggar after talking to Mr Peacham the beggar picks
up a broom, the scene changes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most physical theatre is devised in origin (the script is formed during a rehearsal), makes use of music,
dance and visual artistry as well as theatre.
The main aim of physical theatre is to challenge the proscenium arch thus breaking the 4th wall and
encourage the audience to participate so as to include the audience in the action with the end goal of
catharsis i.e. the 2 way transferal of emotion between audience and actor/actress
Modern physical theatre has been influenced most of all by mime and contemporary dance.
Physical theatre was started when a student by the name of jean louis barrault who rejected the notion
that mime should be silent, in doing so opening up many new possibilities and thus physical theatre was
born.
Simplistically physical theatre is a style of theatre that focuses more on movement than dialogue that
puts the human body at the centre of the process of storytelling e.g. if there is a building or monument
the actors will become that building or monument, physical theatre tends to also divide into 2 subgenres,
either minimalism in which the set is rather basic and is more heavily reliant on the actors, or baroque in
which there is much lighting, special effects and high intensity drama.

The Importance Of Leisure And Ethnic Minorities In Canada
Introduction Today, Canadian cities are more diverse than they have been at any point in history. Over
the last 20 years, the number of Canada s visible minorities has increased from 5 percent to 19 percent
(Stodolska M., 2015). Commonly, immigrants will arrive with a strong determination to be successful in
their everyday lives and to acquire new knowledge and language skills. The people with the most drive
to succeed in these areas tend to have a more effective adaptation to their new country (McNeely, C. A et
al., 2017). A healthy transition to a new country can be realised by many aspects throughout the
resettlement process, most are the characteristics of the host community.
Leisure and Ethnic Minorities
Leisure Constraints The importance of diversity can sometimes be taken for granted. But there is no
doubt that Canada is a better and more successful country because of it. The ability and readiness of a
majority population and the way they accept immigrants has been proven to have a high impact on how
well these immigrants can adapt to their new environment (Tirone, S., Pedlar, A., 2000). Distinct cultural
identities of ethnic minorities can be persistently challenged. Even with discrimination and segregation
almost eliminated from our society there are still a few constraints that can hinder adaptation and feel
more like acculturation. Acculturation can refer to the ways in which immigrants accept and follow
dominant values because of pressure exerted from the

Mortality In Into Thin Air
The reality of mortality: A personal understanding on Into Thin Air
By: Reta Meng
They helped outsiders find their way into the sanctuary and violate every limb of her body by standing
on top of her, crowing in victory, and dirtying and polluting her bosom . (Krakauer 299) This was the
context of a letter sent to Krakauer from a Sherpa orphan, indicating the harm that has been done to
Everest.
Into Thin Air is a spectacular novel written by the well celebrated author Jon Krakauer from his true
experience. This account on the 1996 Everest tragedy is described through Krakauer s perspective as
events leading up to the tragedy unravels around him. Due to his hysteric state on everest, Krakauer later
took much time and effort into interviewing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As an experienced mountaineer, Krakauer s childhood dream had been to climb Mount Everest. This
lingering dream was triggered with a full blast when he accepted the offer of being on Rob Hall s leaded
expedition as a reporter for Outside magazine. Krakauer had to change his attitude from a free willed
climber to an obedient client on the team and was concerned about his other fellow clients when they
were first acquainted. In outlook and experience they were nothing like the hard core climbers with
whom I usually went into the mountains . (Krakauer 39) In previous years, Krakauer had always climbed
alone or with some trusted friends. He came to realize that one must completely rely on the guide instead
of other clients on a guided expedition. After meeting the other clients, Krakauer develops a sense of
superiority as he is one of the most experienced climbers on the team. It shocked him when the author
found out that clients Beck Weathers, Stuart Hutchinson, and Lou Kasischke never tried on their
mountaineering boots beforehand and Hutchinson even failed to notice his crampons (steel spikes that
are attached to the bottom of boots to help with ice climbing) did not fit his boots. As the expedition
drags on, Krakauer became more acquainted with the rest of his team members and has a change in
mindset. I learned that between the demands of their families and their high powered careers, few of my
fellow clients had had the opportunity to go climbing more than once or twice in the previous year.... But
maybe I m just being a snob, I scolded myself. Krakauer admits through this context that he is deeply
concerned about his inexperienced teammates although he realized that it is not up to him to worry about
such things. He came to realize that although many other clients were extremely unexperienced, their
goal to summit the

Summary Of Attachment Theory
Article Summary
Anne Merrill and Tamara Afifi (2015) examine how attachment theory emotionally and cognitively
interacts with various secret keeping instances (Merrill, Afifi, 2015, p. 259). Research has shown that
secrecy has harmful affects such as, anxiety and stress (Merrill, Afifi, 2015, pp. 259 260). However the
level to which these individuals ponder, or ruminate, about the secret varies from person to person
(Merrill, Afifi, 2015, p. 259).
Theoretically, these researchers utilize the preoccupation models of secrecy to explain why secrecy
negatively affects a person s well being (Merrill, Afifi, 2015, p. 260). Research states, individuals in a
romantic relationship are likely to experience cognitive tension due to thought suppression and intrusive
thoughts (rumination), which continually repeat in efforts to maintain secrecy (Merrill, Afifi, 2015, pp.
260 261). Attachment theory states, those individuals who are securely attached (low anxiety and
avoidance) are less likely to keep secrets from their partner because they are more trusting (Merrill,
Afifi, 2015, 2015, p. 261). As oppose to individuals with high attachment avoidance, who tend to be ...

partner, while 12.6% reported they were not keeping any secrets from their partner (Merrill, Afifi, 2015,
p. 265). Positive secret keepers were excluded from the analysis, reducing the sample size (Merrill, Afifi,
2015, p. 265). Researcher s also found that the more avoidant individuals are, the less likely they are to
perceive their partner as having ownership over their secrets (Merrill, Afifi, 2015, p. 256). Lastly, guilt
and rumination had a strong, positive, and significant relationship (Merrill, Afifi, 2015, p.

Chemical and Biological Uses of Weapons of Mass Destruction
Chemical and Biological Uses of WMD
The threat by terrorist groups in using Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) has increased significantly
in the recent years. Preventing the creation and the utilization of these deadly weapons as well as their
delivery systems and reducing those already in existence, has become of extreme importance to the
government. Certain weapons of mass destruction, such as chemical and biological, are easier to acquire
but much harder to detect. For that reason, they should be the highest priority. Predicting when and how
an attack will occur, involving chemical or biological weapons, is not 100 percent possible; however,
individuals should not ignore the possibility of such an attack happening here on American soil. In the
past, there have been attacks involving Sarin gas, such as the Tokyo Subway attack, and just recently, the
Sarin nerve agent use in Syria. Terrorist have the capability to use chemical WMD and have shown that
they are willing to use this method in warfare. In addition, military biological WMD programs
discovered in Iraq and Russia show that there is a definite biological threat as well. Preparing America to
face this threat head on is a daunting task, but lacking preparedness could have devastating consequences
beyond comprehension. Agencies, such as public health organizations, must be prepared to prevent
illness and injuries resulting from biological and chemical terrorism, especially with a concealed attack
by a terrorist.

The Negative Effects Of Racial Stereotypes In Asian...
Trouble with Themselves
Throughout the day, many people use stereotypes. Stereotypes are the idea when people have an
oversimplified idea of a particular type of person. Some are more noticeable than others yet a lot of
people do not know the negative effects that stereotypes have on the person. The issue is that people go
through racial stereotypes everyday not knowing it affects their health. Minorities are affected by racial
stereotypes, and the most affected are Hispanics, Africans, and Asian Americans. Out of all the races in
the United States, Asian Americans have stereotypes based on them; having higher expectations
compared to any other ethnicities. Stereotypes can make Asian Americans stress because of how both
positive and negative stereotypes tend to have a negative impact on an individual s life. Many ethnicities
feel like they have to live up to stereotypes, many Asians Americans who are labeled as the model
minority which causes them stress that pressure them, to achieve higher expectations. Many Asian
Americans complain they are being judged by racial stereotypes. Stereotypes are being used more in this
newer generation which can be considered as bullying. However, in the article Asian American and
Stereotypes from the New York Times, Denise Wong Peck an executive adviser at Ascend, an
organization for Asian business professionals claims, as Asian American, we are too often judged not by
our individual characters, but by stereotypes (Peck). Peck explains that as Asian Americans; people do
not see Asians as individuals, but rather as collective clone; since many Americans assume Asians are all
proficient at the same subjects. Imagine a factory with a big signs that says Asian Americans, African
Americans, White Americans, Latin Americans, etc. and they all come out in a single file line from this
factory with the same characteristics and same intelligence as stereotypes say. That is what stereotypes
are pretty much saying about every race. For example, some people assume that all African Americans
are good athletes. This is a common misconception since not all African Americans go to college to play
sports. From the New York Times article Asian American and

Sharon Middle School Essay
Sharon Middle School is very similar to a eukaryotic cell.
First off, they both have a nucleus. The function of the nucleus is to control the cell s day to day
activities. The school s nucleus is the principal. The principal controls what the school does every school
day.
Both the school and cells also have deoxyribonucleic acid A.K.A DNA. The function of DNA is to
control what the cell looks like. The school has a superintendent. He controls what the school
environment should look like.
Next, both the school and cells have a mitochondria. The mitochondria turns food energy into energy the
cell can use. The generators, are similar to the mitochondria. The generator take gasoline and turns it into
usable electricity.
The school and cells both also have a lysosome. The function of the lysosome is to break down, food,

school has several cooks. They make food (and proteins) for students.
The school and cells also both have chloroplasts. The function of chloroplasts is to create energy from
sunlight. Similarly, the school has several solar panels. They absorb sunlight and turns it into usable

Next, the school and cells both have an endoplasmic reticulum. The function of the endoplasmic

Research Paper On Witchcraft
Do you know what witchcraft is? Witchcraft is seeking help or guidance from any spiritual source other
than God. We see much of this in society today horoscopes, astrology, tarot cards, witchcraft, sorcery,
magic, séances, psychics, palm reading, spiritism, fortune telling, necromancy (communicating with the
dead), Chinese Zodiacs, burning candles, chants, spells, potions, charms, the Rosary, icon bracelets, et
cetera.
If it s not God s Holy Spirit, then you are dealing with the Devil. Any spirit that is not the Holy Spirit is a
familiar spirit. Anytime you hear someone talking about spiritual matters without mentioning Jesus
Christ or the Bible, run, as fast as you can. A Modernist is someone who falsely claims to be a Puritan,
an imposter. Many false prophets today masquerade as Puritans, but they ... Show more content on

We can only worship God in spirit (John 4:24). Our battles in this life are ultimately against the Devil;
not flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:12). The Devil works inside the mind of the wicked, to lead them to do
horrible things (Ephesians 2:2). The Devil can t make anyone do anything, but he influences people if
they are susceptible. This is the woeful danger of making witchcraft look innocent and fun to young
people. It teaches children to invoke Satan s power. Any witches magical power all comes from Satan.
All spiritual power comes from either God or Satan. We see this truth in the Bible, when Pharaoh s
magicians imitated the Lord s miracles wrought by the hand of Moses and Aaron (Exodus 7:11). Satan is
a master counterfeiter and disguise artist (2nd Corinthians 11:13 15). Satan is all about deception and lies
(John 8:44). There is no such thing as white witchcraft. There s only one kind of devil... A BAD DEVIL!
All forms of witchcraft are Satan s works of darkness. It is tragic that children are being introduced to
witchcraft, sorcery, magic, spells and all sorts of demonic practices which the Bible

Accounting Policies While Preparing Their Financial...
Companies use accounting policies while preparing their financial statements. All financial statements
are set to follow an international standard guideline. These policies are available to users of financial
statements while making financial decisions in order to make sure that the proper decisions are being
made. According to The Financial reporting and analysis article by Gibson, the full disclosure principle
states that a company s financial statements should include all the information needed in order for the
reader to fully understand statements (Gibson, 2012). Disclosures not only provide extensive information
to users but also monitor the preparation of financial statements to guarantee that it is free from any
misleading policies that might have been used by management while preparing financial statements.
Some of the requirements by the disclosure when preparing financial statements are reporting all
transactions and trades that occurred during the period that the financial statements are covering are
actually reflected on the financial statements. This includes any errors that might have caused any false
calculations should also be reported on the financial statements. In addition to that, footnotes should be
provided along with the financial statements to support and better explain financial reporting (Prentzas,
2012). The two common disclosures required and applied on financial reporting are fixed assets and
notes payable. Fixed assets disclosure categorizes

Bigger Than A Hamburger, By Ella Baker
In 1960 Ella Baker delivered a speech entitled Bigger than a Hamburger to what would come to be the
Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). In this speech she argued to students who had
been involved in the sit ins that what they were fighting for was bigger than a hamburger and
desegregating a lunch counter, but struggling for equality in all its forms. In a similar way, so too has the
fight for quality education been bigger than a classroom. Ella Baker also argued that, through the process
of education, black people would be accepted in the American culture and they would be accorded their
rights in proportion to the degree to which they qualified as being persons of learning and culture. This is
a testament to the over 200 year tradition within the black community of viewing education as
inseparable with the concepts of freedom and citizenship. During slavery anyone found to be assembling
in an effort to teach slaves to read and write received corporal punishment. Consequently, throughout
Reconstruction education was pursued with a vengeance. Freedmen s Bureau agents reported, Colored
men have paid their own money to prepare and furnish a room for a school. The Rosenwald Fund, a
charity organization headed by the president of the Sears Roebuck Company, donated funds to build
black schools, but the funds had to be matched by those from the local school system. So black residents
double taxed themselves in order to pay for these schools. Nearly every

Act Utilitarianism And Rule Utilitarianism
1. Utilitarians believe that one should so act as to promote the greatest happiness (pleasure) of the
greatest number of people (Angeles 326). However, within the utilitarian community there are major
splits in how we are to determine which action brings us the greatest amounts of pleasure. Today I will
be focusing on two ways to determine which actions bring the greatest amount of pleasure to a situation:
act and rule utilitarianism. I will define both act and rule utilitarianism, give a situation where both can
be applied, and respond to an objection of utilitarianism. I will also be discussing why I believe act
utilitarianism helps more people than rule utilitarianism, in turn, becoming superior to rule utilitarianism.
2. To begin, I will be defining both act and rule utilitarianism. In act utilitarianism, you determine the
morality of an act by measuring the pleasures and pains for a specific situation Angeles 326). Act
utilitarians take into consideration only those affected in the specific situation. However, rule
utilitarianism determines the morality of an act according to the good or bad consequences that ensue
from following a general moral rule of conduct... (Angeles 326). Good examples of those general moral
rules are phrases like, never steal or never tell a lie. In any situation, people can use either act or rule
utilitarianism to determine the correct course of action.
3. Now, I will use a hypothetical situation to describe both act and rule

The Heroic Code Of Sir Gawain
Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and army officer, once said, Success is not
final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts (Winston Churchill). Sir Gawain
displayed these action and emotion during the fight to defeat the Green Knight. Sir Gawain was faced
with many trials and tribulations through his journey that forced him to stay true to his Heroic Code. The
principles that Sir Gawain demonstrated in the pursuit of the Green Knight are respecting women,
service to the king with bravery, honor, and faith, and staying committed to his religious practices. Sir

Dear lady, said the other, don t think such a thing, I dare not kiss in case I am declined . (Greenblatt) Sir

presents. Even though, women during the medieval era did not receive a high social status, Knights still
held a heroic code to respect and honor women (Medieval Women). Thus, proves Sir Gawain
commitment in valuing the heroic code. Towards the end of poem, Sir Gawain beings to notice the sins

is responsible for greed and lack of faith that he endured on his travels. To make up for the mistakes he

faith that Sir Gawain has in God. Sir Gawain finally comes face to face with the Green Knight, where Sir

Victorian Age Research Paper
1) The Victorian Age: Social Background There are tow dates for the beginning of the Victorian Age in
England: The first date is 1837, when the Queen Victory accessed to the British throne. However the
most accepted date as the start of the Victorian Age is 1832, date of the First Reform Bill. This reform
allowed the entrance of urban bourgeoisie or middle class in the Parliament because the requirements for
voting were simplified; there was an increasing number of population with the right to vote. This reform
also broke up the monopoly of power in hands of aristocracy and landowners in the Parliament. The end

The morality about sex had a main aim: An ideal of purity based on a chastity code which emphasized
the relevance of premarital continence. In order to keep this chastity code, anything related to sex was
silenced in an attitude of deliberated ignorance, an attitude of rejection of sex, especially in women, who
usually associated sex with a marital duty. The Victorian education tried to introduce, especially in young
men, an attitude towards women based on respect. They were taught to think of women as sisters or even
as angels rather than human beings. This kind of education tried to separate completely love from sex
and it was not especially oriented to girls because women were supposed to not have any kind of sexual
desire. Any kind of sexual expression is limited to marriage, and even, sexual relationships in marriage
were only justified for procreation. The main source of this code of purity and virtue is the resurgence of
Puritanism in the last decades of 18th century (Methodism and Evangelical movement). There was a
revival of the old traditions which were very conservative and especially repressed of any sexual
behaviour. The Victorian Age s morality also condemned any kind of sexual reference in literature.
Victorian critics demanded from serious literature a didactic content and respect to the Victorian
conventions which established that sex

Lennie s Childishness
During the 1930s in America, many experienced years of harsh depression, where food and work were
scarce. Many struggled to survive during this difficult period, and as a result were forced to travel to seek
any work they could. The novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck focuses on two itinerant men
named George and Lennie, who struggled under the difficulty of these times. They find work at a ranch
to fund their dream of owning their own ranch and being independent. However, it is due to Lennie,
who, as Steinbeck effectively conveys throughout the novel, is a physically intimidating but mentally
childish man, that their American dream is shattered, as a result of his love for petting soft things and his,

Among the most prominent of Lennie s sympathetic attributes is undoubtedly his frightened nature. This
characteristic is conveyed consistently throughout the novel even when Lennie loses his temper it is due
to fear. His timidity is often due to being scared of displeasing George, who acts as Lennie s father
figure: Lennie looked timidly over to him. George? Here, Lennie appears to be asking for permission
from George to ask a question, for fear that George will be angry. This demonstrates Lennie s timidity
and lack of confidence, as well as his childishness and dependence on George. One significant incident
which is used to establish this characteristic is when Curley attacks Lennie in the bunkhouse. Lennie is
terrified, and the novel states that he covered his face with his huge paws and bleated with terror . Here,
the author uses metaphor to compare Lennie to an animal. He describes Lennie s hands as paws, and the
noise he is making as bleating. This reinforces the irony that Lennie is so physically powerful but so
mentally weak, as, despite being strong, with paws like such of a bear, he is making a noise like that of a
lamb. By characterising Lennie in this way, the author presents him as an fearful and innocent character,
making the reader feel sympathy for him. Another way that Steinbeck creates sympathy for the character
of Lennie is by portraying him as childlike, with George taking the role of his father figure. For example,

Analysis Of William Wordsworth s Macbeth Essay
STORY ANALYSIS WORKSHEET
The Protagonist: Romney Wordsworth
The Protagonist s Chief Want: Wordsworth chief want is to reveal to the chancellor that every human
being has purpose, worth, and a voice. The value of one s life is not simply based on his or her
conformity to the various edicts set forth by the State. In order to achieve his chief want, Romney is
willing to sacrifice his own life. At the end of the story, Romney relinquishes his life and the chancellor
escapes. After Romney s death, it seems as though the chancellor learned nothing from his near death
experience in Wordsworth room; yet, upon being pronounced obsolete , the chancellor desperately
screams in anguish that his life contains purpose and worth. Thus, Wordsworth fulfilled his chief want
through his life and death.
The Inciting Incident: The inciting incident begins when the chancellor finds Wordsworth guilty of being
an obsolete man. Wordsworth understands that merely arguing his position will yield unfruitful results;
rather, he will only convince the chancellor through his actions.

Role Of Auditing And Regulatory Compliance
ROLE OF AUDITING IN REGULATORY COMPLIANCE BY: SHEFALI VERMA (A 20325809)
ILLINOIS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, CHICAGO
ABSTRACT
Risk, compliance and governance activities are by nature interconnected and rely on common sets of
information, processes, technology and methodology. The traditional approach to governance, risk and

This research paper focuses on how IT audits are done and how they can help in assisting an
organization in its regulatory compliance effort by identifying information security weaknesses prior to
an external audit. The key players and their roles are defined, as well as organizational, results based,
point in time systems and extended period audits. This leads to a natural question. In this new world of
connected GRC, what is the role of internal audit compared to compliance? Where do these roles remain
separate and where do they share responsibilities? How can these professionals work together to drive
business value?
This paper can help in understanding how the board, management, and internal audit each have a
significant role in ensuring information security is effective. We can learn that internal auditing can also
help prepare the organization for an external regulatory audit (SOX or HIPAA, for example) by
evaluating management s efforts and providing recommendations for improvement prior to the external
audit. This can help in understanding that IT security audits contribute to an organization s regulatory
compliance efforts by confirming to senior management and

Religious Characters in The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer
*Works Cited Not Included
When thinking of the figures in the church, they are thought to be loyal, respectful, giving, and
dedicated. Sadly to say this, but not all figures follow that description. In
The Canterbury Tales , Chaucer shows the corruption of the church in the medieval period through some
of his characters, particularly through the Nun, the Monk, and the Friar. Yet, Chaucer does show one
character, the Parson, as goodness and holiness in the church. Nuns are member of a religious order for
women, living in a convent under vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Their orders vary in the

One positive point is that she does have a clean mouth and watches what she says. Monks have
abandoned the world for religious reasons and devote their lives, either separately or in a community, to
spiritual perfection. The vows of celibacy, poverty, and obedience under which they live, are termed the
religious counsels. A person bound by such vows is known as a religious. Chaucer s Monk s sport was
hunting. The Rule of good Saint Benet or Saint
Maur (Prologue, 177) says hunters are not holy men (Prologue, 182). He does not keep to his studies, but
instead would rather be doing labor. In addition, he holds worldly possessions, such as his wrought gold
cunningly fashioned pin (Prologue,

specific community within which he led a withdrawn life, having no direct contact with the secular
world.
Friars, on the other hand, belonged to no particular monastic house, but to a general order and worked as
an individual in the non religious world. Thus, friars and monks are not on synonymous terms. Friars are
members of certain religious orders who practice the principles of monastic life and devote themselves to
the service of humanity in the secular world.
Originally, their rules forbid holding either community or personal property. The resulting dependence of
friars on voluntary

Our Lives With No Regrets Is A Symbol Of What Bit s...
We live in water is a series of short stories written by Jess Walter. Anything Helps is the first story in the
collection and it is based on a homeless man reverting to writing on cardboard signs to afford the new
Harry Potter Book for his son. The narrator loses his son to child protective services shortly after his
wife, Julie, overdosed on drugs. This leaves the narrator, Bit, reminiscing back on his life and wishing he
could have done things differently. The theme in present society, that we must pursue our dreams so we
may live our lives with no regrets is portrayed in the short story through symbolism, imagery, and
character traits.
Throughout the story, Bit periodically mentions the many regrets he has in his life and things he wished
to one day accomplish. The narrator uses symbolism in the short story to represent the broken
relationship he has with his son. The Harry Potter book is a symbol of what Bit s family could have
been; the abuse of drugs has led to the overdose of his wife and separation from his son. The author
wrote, Bit kind of wishes he d kept up with the books, before the dominos started going: before CPS
came, before Julie got so hopeless and strung out, before... (pg.21). This is an example of how the
reappearance of Harry Potter books makes Bit ponder on the times before everything went bad and it
fills him with regret. Meredith Maran wrote in a book review that Bit was an, alcoholic panhandler

1960-1980 Essay
In 1957 there was a volcanic eruption off the Azorean island of Faial and a series of earthquakes that
displaced many families from their homes. The U.S. Azorean Relief Act in the summer of 1958 allowed
for the entry of 4,811 Portuguese (p.3). Pap (1996), for example, estimates that half of the Azorean
population in 1965 had personal or family ties in the US. The establishment of Portuguese speaking
communities before 1921 thus encouraged, enabled, and channeled post 1957 migration. The peak years
for Portuguese migration to the US were thus 1967 1970, when immigrants averaged over 13,000 per
year (Bailey, 2000).
The Azorean population reached a peak of 330,000 in 1960, but by 1974 had shrunk to 259,000 (Chapin,
1989). Several factors contributed to the large scale emigration from the Azores but the principal reason
was poverty. The Azores were undeveloped in part due to their geographic isolation from continental
Portugal, with an approximate distance of 1000 miles of ocean separating the two regions. Under the
regime of António de Oliveira Salazar, Europe s longest fascist dictatorship 1926 1974, power was
highly centralized in Lisbon. Even Azorean imports and exports had to pass through ... Show more

Research Paper On Cuban Embargo
It is said that President John F. Kennedy secured nearly 1,200 Cuban cigars just hours before enacting
the Cuban trade embargo in 1962. Many Americans probably wished they could have done this before all
trade between the United States and Cuba ceased as the United States now marks the 55th year of an
ongoing embargo against Cuba. On February 3, 1962 President Kennedy signed Proclamation 3447 to
declare an embargo against all trade between the United States and Cuba. This embargo consists of trade,

Robert Frost The Road Not Taken Analysis
The Road Not Taken written by Robert Frost uses several poetic devices such as imagery and
personification to emphasize how indecisive Frost is about his decision on which road he should take.
The Road Not Taken is about how the narrator chooses a path that he was once confused and worried
about but over time become content with his final decision. Frost uses the debating between the two
roads to show the reader the two choices that are presented to him and how those two choices offer
countless amount of possibilities. There are multiple different ways to decipher the poem, but Frost
connects with the reader in the sense that no matter what road is taken, another road will later replace the
past road. Frost begins to notice one of the two roads looks more worn down than the other, Though as
for that the passing there had worn them really about the same this is representing real life traumas and
can show the decision making process when choosing between two options. Looking down one of the
roads of life before actually following the trail shows a different perspective and point of view from the
basic stand point of only seeing a problem one way and never seeing the problem or decision from
another point of view. Frost decides in the end to take one of the paths and says he will take the second
path another day although he may never go back to the starting point of his journey. It is more than just
human instinct to not want to take the more unnatural or harmful pathway; it is easier to take the cleaner
path so that the problem will be over with faster and Frost depicts this problem perfectly in the form of a
short poem. Frost entrances the reader s mind with the bountiful amount of imagery within the poem.
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, the comforting and well known nature that Frost describes
contradicts against the terrifying reality of the unknown through decision making. Frost goes on to
explain how he, as many others do, try to visualize what his life would be like if he were to go down one
of the roads he chose, Long I stood and looked down one as far as I could worrying about how decisions
will affect every independent life can be a hassle and trying to understand and fully

study also found that there is a nuanced relationship between environmental concern and the use of solar

alternative energy sources. A study done by D. Fuchs and M. Arentsen (2002) supports the findings of
the Rai Beck study as they found that a lack of knowledge of electricity supply options and the negative

John Locke Freedom Analysis
John Locke was one of the first philosophers out of many who protested about government not giving
the people the freedom that they deserve. As we know Locke and Hobbes are great thinkers, however
they had divergent belief in the way they see the human. Throughout Locke s life, he had various
sublime ideas which tells that the power of monarchy (Kings) and monarchs should be limited and they
should respect the rights of their citizens. Locke s implicitly refuted the idea that Kings rule people
according to the divine right, and defended that the human being should have the natural rights. For
Locke s believes people deserve freedom, though there were rules that was implemented, it shouldn t be
strict to have an order society. An example in a class, having a terror professor will gives nervous
breakdown feeling to student because of being very strict rule. Then result, some of the students will be
afraid to give their opinion freely, or some might drop their subjects to this professor. So how can this
professor produce a very organized and productive class if his/her students were frightened by his strict
rules. Unlike having a professor who have minimize rules but got sense of humor the students will feel at
ease to share their ideas and they will be courage to pursue more their studies for better future. Locke

Compassion into Indifference The true value of a human being can be found in the degree to which he
has attained liberation from the self and mind . This quote by Albert Einstein demonstrates the emotional
struggle of Dante as he traversed through hell. The Inferno, as a story, has metamorphosised the way
people envision compassion. Dante showed his readers that compassion is repugnant in order to develop
into a more spiritually enlightened individual. The Inferno, by Dante Alighieri, presents that Dante s
reaction to sinners from compassion and pity to indifference reflects his journey from naïveté to spiritual
enlightenment, through the empathy of Dante, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dante s realization begins with the Sowers of Scandal and Schism, where he meets a soul who refuses to

49). At this point, Dante is now more mature in his judgment of sins. Rather than feel pity for this sinner,
he mocks the sinner for being submerged in a pile of excrement. His words do not present any
compassion for the sinner. Dante yet again shows his maturity when he speaks to Count Ugolino, where
he says, For if Count Ugolino had the fame of having thy castles thee betrayed, thou should not on such
cross have put his sons (Alighieri, XXXIII 85). Dante feels no compassion for the Count, and condemns
his for his apostate crime. Finally, Dante demonstrates floccinaucinihilipilification when he meets Bocca
Delgi Abate. When Dante sees him, and then by the scalp I seized upon him, and said: it need to be thou
name thyself or not a hair remains upon thee here (Alighieri, XXXIII 96). As a result, Dante finally
realizes that sinners deserve their punishment. Rather than just ignore this sinner, Dante even
impertinently pulls out the sinner s hair to show his understanding of indifference. Thus, this realization

Benefits And Rewards For Employee Benefits
Employee benefits are an essential component of an organization s total rewards strategy.
Today companies design benefits packages that are unique and rewarding in order to attract and retain
talented workers. In fact, employee benefits have evolved significantly over the years. Employee
benefits are no longer just the basics, such as healthcare and retirement plans. Organizations are now
expanding their benefits and rewards offerings to include creative perquisites, such as onsite childcare,
flexible work schedules, and employee game rooms. Employers understand that to gain a competitive
advantage in the war for talent, they must create new and improved rewards for their employees. This
paper will examine the innovative benefits and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Innovative benefits are the solution to meet employee demands. Innovative benefits are any creative
reward designed to provide employees with a special privilege, financial value, and/or personal
advantage. Innovative benefits include many employee perquisites, such as onsite childcare, paid time
off, employer matched charitable donations, discounted gym memberships, and tuition assistance.
Employees are attracted to organizations that create innovative benefits packages. Organizations are
creating and adopting innovative benefits in order to improve their overall compensation strategies.
Compensation strategy defines how an organization plans to reward its employees for their time and
efforts. An effective compensation strategy enhances (1) talent management, (2) supports an organization
s business objectives, and (3) provides organizations with a return on their investment. Therefore, in
order for innovative benefits to enhance the competitiveness of an organization s overall compensation
strategy, the benefits must align with these three goals. First, innovative benefits plans can give
organizations a competitive advantage in recruiting, developing, and retaining talented workers. The war
for talent in the workforce is becoming more competitive. According to researcher Tapomoy Deb (2005)

Jensen Ackles Place In The TV Show Supernatural
Don t you dare think that there is anything, past or present, that I would put in front of you! It has never
been like that, ever! This quote, said by Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) is his way of telling his
brother, Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) how much he means to him. This quote is also subtext for
how close Sam and Dean are. The hit television show, Supernatural, is filled with subtext, some that is
obvious, and some that is not. My essay takes place in Season 5 Episode 22, Swan Song; the fifth season
s finale. In Supernatural, noticeable themes include bonds between people and loss. This episode of
Supernatural shows bonds between Sam and Lucifer. Together we re two halves made whole. MFEO

At the beginning of the episode, Sam and Dean sit on the hood of their dearest 67 impala and discuss
Sam s plan with Lucifer (as of the beginning of the episode Lucifer is not possessing Sam); a plan that
would put Lucifer back in his cage, but Sam would be stuck with him. While the two brothers drive to
where Lucifer is located, they share lots of conversation. This thing goes our way and I Triple Lindy into
that box, you know I m not coming back, Sam says, making a reference to his plan of letting Lucifer
possess him and jump into the cage; Sam saying this made Dean uncomfortable with the plan and letting
his brother die. Sam feels it is only fair due to him being the reason Lucifer is on earth in the first place.
Once Sam s plan goes about and Lucifer possesses him, he is no longer in control of his body; whenever
he appears to be speaking, it is really Lucifer. He disappears, leaving Dean alone in an abandoned
building; Dean realizes that may have been the last time he will see his brother again, and begins to

Cops Teachers And Counselors Chapter 2 Summary

Book Review
Maynard Moody, S., Musheno, M. (2009). Cops, Teachers, Counselors: Stories from the front lines of
public service.
Riccucci, N. (2005). How management matters: Street level bureaucrats and welfare reform.
Key Findings Cops, Teachers, Counselors: Stories from the Front Lines of Public Service, by Steven
Maynard Moody and Michael Musheno, is a fascinating exploration of how street level bureaucrats
make decisions and provide services to the public. The authors use an engaging narrative analysis to
describe how bureaucrats from various agencies use discretion when making judgments on the delivery
of public services. Stories from teachers, police officers and counselors offer the reader first hand ...

The cases documented seemed to be handpicked for narrative color rather than a true representation of
behavior on a day to day basis. Freedom to exercise discretion is shown to be an abuse of power in some
cases and heroic altruistic acts in others. The books depict discretion as a license to hunt, where
bureaucrats use ?a strict adherence to law? as an excuse to play God and punish ?the bad.? Leniency is
shown to be a heroic act to help those deemed ?good.?
Contributions to the Field of Public Administration In their books, Riccucci and Maynard Moody
Musheno expose the reader to the front line world of bureaucratic agencies. Through narration, they
provide the reader direct experiences that support theories of discretion, performance management and
the public administration dichotomy. By linking testimonies of real world, street level experiences with
theory, they offer a nuanced and humane perspective. The books give managers of public administration
the knowledge to develop strategies that may help link public policy with bureaucratic practice.

Financial stability is when your financial plan and system is resistant to economic shocks, it means to be
able to manage risks and your arrangement of payments accordingly to your living or lifestyle; it is a
widely discussed issue in today s economy. Financial stability is not a number or class, it s a state of

In my opinion, financial stability is being able to exceed that cost. A person should be able to live within
there means and still save money for later, that is financial stability to me. It means more than just
paying your bills and expenses because what if, one day your whole entire house burns down as well as
all of your beloved belongings? Are you going to be positive that you and your family will be okay? It
all comes down to being prepared for financial curve balls, because you never know what could happen;
life sure does know how to surprise us. I feel like if you re able to get all of your needs taken care of, still
be able to do something s that you want and plan for your future ( put money away for savings) then you
re living right. It may not always be the easiest thing to do or conquer, but it s a goal most everyone is
trying to reach. Having to worry about how you and your family are going to survive is a stressful and
scary feeling that I m sure no one wants to feel.
A good question is how does a person acquire financial stability? In my opinion, one of the main reasons
so many people are financially unstable is because they can afford there lifestyle. If you work at
McDonald s a Mercedes Benz might be slightly out of your reach. I believe that a person that could
acquire financial stability if they were realistic with the lifestyle that they want to live and the amount of
money that they make. With that being the first step I

Why Were There Ethnic Tensions In The Soviet Union
Q6. Ethnic tensions became such a severe problem in the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia due to the fact
that it would be a dividing factor in the nation. With the ethnic groups separating from each other, the
Soviet Union and Yugoslavia would begin to weaken and crumble. The ethnic tensions would cause the
different ethnic groups to separate from each other, they no longer agreed with each other. Nationalism
would be the major cause of this severe problem, the people had pride in their ethnic groups.
Unfortunately, for big nations such as the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia, they were filled with multiple
ethnic groups who all wanted to be their own separate state. More specifically, this would prove to be
extremely difficult for Yugoslavia to deal with due to the fact that their were at least six different republic
located within Yugoslavia itself, this would create major ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
More and more nations and ethnic groups wished to declare their own independence as a new nation.
The old Communist leaders within the Soviet Union were completely against the idea of allowing the
economy and political systems to open up, they were against allowing the different nations to break free.
The old Communist leaders wanted to maintain their Soviet Empire; unfortunately, they forgot that
nationalism, in time, destroys all empires. Nationalism, pride in their ethnic groups would be the
downfall of the Soviet Union. Four major nations would end up breaking away from the Soviet Union,
for example, Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Romania. Each of these nations had to deal with
their own ethnic tension, they no longer wanted to be apart of the Soviet Union. These nations wanted
their independence, freedoms, rights, and liberties. They no longer wanted to be forced to follow and
believe in the same ideas as the Soviet Union, they wanted to be able to be their own nations with their

  • 2. Epic Theatre Essay Acting unit September December 2016 Edmund Richmond price Introduction Within this final log I shall explain the two contrasting styles of theatre that were covered within the lesson i.e. naturalism and physical theatre, include examples of exercises that were covered in the lessons with examples of my notes and follow up with a conclusion and evaluation. Attributes of Brechtian epic theatre Firstly when watching a Brechtian piece the most apparent is that there is no offstage. When a character no longer needs to be relevant the actor must instead simply blend into the background an example of this in a production of the threepenny opera is that a beggar after talking to Mr Peacham the beggar picks up a broom, the scene changes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most physical theatre is devised in origin (the script is formed during a rehearsal), makes use of music, dance and visual artistry as well as theatre. The main aim of physical theatre is to challenge the proscenium arch thus breaking the 4th wall and encourage the audience to participate so as to include the audience in the action with the end goal of catharsis i.e. the 2 way transferal of emotion between audience and actor/actress Modern physical theatre has been influenced most of all by mime and contemporary dance. Physical theatre was started when a student by the name of jean louis barrault who rejected the notion that mime should be silent, in doing so opening up many new possibilities and thus physical theatre was born. Simplistically physical theatre is a style of theatre that focuses more on movement than dialogue that puts the human body at the centre of the process of storytelling e.g. if there is a building or monument the actors will become that building or monument, physical theatre tends to also divide into 2 subgenres, either minimalism in which the set is rather basic and is more heavily reliant on the actors, or baroque in which there is much lighting, special effects and high intensity drama. • 3. The Importance Of Leisure And Ethnic Minorities In Canada Introduction Today, Canadian cities are more diverse than they have been at any point in history. Over the last 20 years, the number of Canada s visible minorities has increased from 5 percent to 19 percent (Stodolska M., 2015). Commonly, immigrants will arrive with a strong determination to be successful in their everyday lives and to acquire new knowledge and language skills. The people with the most drive to succeed in these areas tend to have a more effective adaptation to their new country (McNeely, C. A et al., 2017). A healthy transition to a new country can be realised by many aspects throughout the resettlement process, most are the characteristics of the host community. Leisure and Ethnic Minorities Leisure Constraints The importance of diversity can sometimes be taken for granted. But there is no doubt that Canada is a better and more successful country because of it. The ability and readiness of a majority population and the way they accept immigrants has been proven to have a high impact on how well these immigrants can adapt to their new environment (Tirone, S., Pedlar, A., 2000). Distinct cultural identities of ethnic minorities can be persistently challenged. Even with discrimination and segregation almost eliminated from our society there are still a few constraints that can hinder adaptation and feel more like acculturation. Acculturation can refer to the ways in which immigrants accept and follow dominant values because of pressure exerted from the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Mortality In Into Thin Air The reality of mortality: A personal understanding on Into Thin Air By: Reta Meng They helped outsiders find their way into the sanctuary and violate every limb of her body by standing on top of her, crowing in victory, and dirtying and polluting her bosom . (Krakauer 299) This was the context of a letter sent to Krakauer from a Sherpa orphan, indicating the harm that has been done to Everest. Into Thin Air is a spectacular novel written by the well celebrated author Jon Krakauer from his true experience. As an experienced mountaineer, Krakauer s childhood dream had been to climb Mount Everest. This lingering dream was triggered with a full blast when he accepted the offer of being on Rob Hall s leaded expedition as a reporter for Outside magazine. Krakauer had to change his attitude from a free willed climber to an obedient client on the team and was concerned about his other fellow clients when they were first acquainted. In outlook and experience they were nothing like the hard core climbers with whom I usually went into the mountains . (Krakauer 39) In previous years, Krakauer had always climbed alone or with some trusted friends. He came to realize that one must completely rely on the guide instead of other clients on a guided expedition. After meeting the other clients, Krakauer develops a sense of superiority as he is one of the most experienced climbers on the team. It shocked him when the author found out that clients Beck Weathers, Stuart Hutchinson, and Lou Kasischke never tried on their mountaineering boots beforehand and Hutchinson even failed to notice his crampons (steel spikes that are attached to the bottom of boots to help with ice climbing) did not fit his boots. As the expedition drags on, Krakauer became more acquainted with the rest of his team members and has a change in mindset. I learned that between the demands of their families and their high powered careers, few of my fellow clients had had the opportunity to go climbing more than once or twice in the previous year.... But maybe I m just being a snob, I scolded myself. Krakauer admits through this context that he is deeply concerned about his inexperienced teammates although he realized that it is not up to him to worry about such things. He came to realize that although many other clients were extremely unexperienced, their goal to summit the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Summary Of Attachment Theory Article Summary Anne Merrill and Tamara Afifi (2015) examine how attachment theory emotionally and cognitively interacts with various secret keeping instances (Merrill, Afifi, 2015, p. 259). Research has shown that secrecy has harmful affects such as, anxiety and stress (Merrill, Afifi, 2015, pp. 259 260). However the level to which these individuals ponder, or ruminate, about the secret varies from person to person (Merrill, Afifi, 2015, p. 259). Theoretically, these researchers utilize the preoccupation models of secrecy to explain why secrecy negatively affects a person s well being (Merrill, Afifi, 2015, p. 260). Research states, individuals in a romantic relationship are likely to experience cognitive tension due to thought suppression and intrusive thoughts (rumination), which continually repeat in efforts to maintain secrecy (Merrill, Afifi, 2015, pp. 260 261). Attachment theory states, those individuals who are securely attached (low anxiety and avoidance) are less likely to keep secrets from their partner because they are more trusting (Merrill, Afifi, 2015, 2015, p. 261). As oppose to individuals with high attachment avoidance, who tend to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 264 265). Positive secret keepers were excluded from the analysis, reducing the sample size (Merrill, Afifi, 2015, p. 265). Researcher s also found that the more avoidant individuals are, the less likely they are to perceive their partner as having ownership over their secrets (Merrill, Afifi, 2015, p. 256). • 6. Chemical and Biological Uses of Weapons of Mass Destruction Chemical and Biological Uses of WMD The threat by terrorist groups in using Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) has increased significantly in the recent years. Preventing the creation and the utilization of these deadly weapons as well as their delivery systems and reducing those already in existence, has become of extreme importance to the government. Certain weapons of mass destruction, such as chemical and biological, are easier to acquire but much harder to detect. For that reason, they should be the highest priority. Predicting when and how an attack will occur, involving chemical or biological weapons, is not 100 percent possible; however, individuals should not ignore the possibility of such an attack happening here on American soil. In the past, there have been attacks involving Sarin gas, such as the Tokyo Subway attack, and just recently, the Sarin nerve agent use in Syria. Terrorist have the capability to use chemical WMD and have shown that they are willing to use this method in warfare. In addition, military biological WMD programs discovered in Iraq and Russia show that there is a definite biological threat as well. Preparing America to face this threat head on is a daunting task, but lacking preparedness could have devastating consequences beyond comprehension. Agencies, such as public health organizations, must be prepared to prevent illness and injuries resulting from biological and chemical terrorism, especially with a concealed attack by a terrorist. ... • 8. The Negative Effects Of Racial Stereotypes In Asian... Trouble with Themselves Throughout the day, many people use stereotypes. Stereotypes are the idea when people have an oversimplified idea of a particular type of person. Some are more noticeable than others yet a lot of people do not know the negative effects that stereotypes have on the person. The issue is that people go through racial stereotypes everyday not knowing it affects their health. Minorities are affected by racial stereotypes, and the most affected are Hispanics, Africans, and Asian Americans. Out of all the races in the United States, Asian Americans have stereotypes based on them; having higher expectations compared to any other ethnicities. Stereotypes can make Asian Americans stress because of how both positive and negative stereotypes tend to have a negative impact on an individual s life. Many ethnicities feel like they have to live up to stereotypes, many Asians Americans who are labeled as the model minority which causes them stress that pressure them, to achieve higher expectations. Many Asian Americans complain they are being judged by racial stereotypes. Stereotypes are being used more in this newer generation which can be considered as bullying. However, in the article Asian American and Stereotypes from the New York Times, Denise Wong Peck an executive adviser at Ascend, an organization for Asian business professionals claims, as Asian American, we are too often judged not by our individual characters, but by stereotypes (Peck). Peck explains that as Asian Americans; people do not see Asians as individuals, but rather as collective clone; since many Americans assume Asians are all proficient at the same subjects. Imagine a factory with a big signs that says Asian Americans, African Americans, White Americans, Latin Americans, etc. and they all come out in a single file line from this factory with the same characteristics and same intelligence as stereotypes say. That is what stereotypes are pretty much saying about every race. For example, some people assume that all African Americans are good athletes. This is a common misconception since not all African Americans go to college to play sports. From the New York Times article Asian American and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In this speech she argued to students who had been involved in the sit ins that what they were fighting for was bigger than a hamburger and desegregating a lunch counter, but struggling for equality in all its forms. In a similar way, so too has the fight for quality education been bigger than a classroom. Ella Baker also argued that, through the process of education, black people would be accepted in the American culture and they would be accorded their rights in proportion to the degree to which they qualified as being persons of learning and culture. This is a testament to the over 200 year tradition within the black community of viewing education as inseparable with the concepts of freedom and citizenship. During slavery anyone found to be assembling in an effort to teach slaves to read and write received corporal punishment. Consequently, throughout Reconstruction education was pursued with a vengeance. Freedmen s Bureau agents reported, Colored men have paid their own money to prepare and furnish a room for a school. • 16. Act Utilitarianism And Rule Utilitarianism 1. Utilitarians believe that one should so act as to promote the greatest happiness (pleasure) of the greatest number of people (Angeles 326). However, within the utilitarian community there are major splits in how we are to determine which action brings us the greatest amounts of pleasure. Today I will be focusing on two ways to determine which actions bring the greatest amount of pleasure to a situation: act and rule utilitarianism. I will define both act and rule utilitarianism, give a situation where both can be applied, and respond to an objection of utilitarianism. I will also be discussing why I believe act utilitarianism helps more people than rule utilitarianism, in turn, becoming superior to rule utilitarianism. 2. To begin, I will be defining both act and rule utilitarianism. In act utilitarianism, you determine the morality of an act by measuring the pleasures and pains for a specific situation Angeles 326). Act utilitarians take into consideration only those affected in the specific situation. However, rule utilitarianism determines the morality of an act according to the good or bad consequences that ensue from following a general moral rule of conduct... (Angeles 326). Good examples of those general moral rules are phrases like, never steal or never tell a lie. In any situation, people can use either act or rule utilitarianism to determine the correct course of action. 3. Now, I will use a hypothetical situation to describe both act and rule ... Victorian Age Research Paper 1) The Victorian Age: Social Background There are tow dates for the beginning of the Victorian Age in England: The first date is 1837, when the Queen Victory accessed to the British throne. However the most accepted date as the start of the Victorian Age is 1832, date of the First Reform Bill. This reform allowed the entrance of urban bourgeoisie or middle class in the Parliament because the requirements for voting were simplified; there was an increasing number of population with the right to vote. This reform also broke up the monopoly of power in hands of aristocracy and landowners in the Parliament. The end of this Age is placed in the turn of the century when Queen Victory died in 1901. The morality about sex had a main aim: An ideal of purity based on a chastity code which emphasized the relevance of premarital continence. In order to keep this chastity code, anything related to sex was silenced in an attitude of deliberated ignorance, an attitude of rejection of sex, especially in women, who usually associated sex with a marital duty. The Victorian education tried to introduce, especially in young men, an attitude towards women based on respect. They were taught to think of women as sisters or even as angels rather than human beings. This kind of education tried to separate completely love from sex and it was not especially oriented to girls because women were supposed to not have any kind of sexual desire. Any kind of sexual expression is limited to marriage, and even, sexual relationships in marriage were only justified for procreation. The main source of this code of purity and virtue is the resurgence of Puritanism in the last decades of 18th century (Methodism and Evangelical movement). There was a revival of the old traditions which were very conservative and especially repressed of any sexual behaviour. The Victorian Age s morality also condemned any kind of sexual reference in literature. Victorian critics demanded from serious literature a didactic content and respect to the Victorian conventions which established that sex ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 21. Lennie s Childishness During the 1930s in America, many experienced years of harsh depression, where food and work were scarce. Many struggled to survive during this difficult period, and as a result were forced to travel to seek any work they could. The novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck focuses on two itinerant men named George and Lennie, who struggled under the difficulty of these times. They find work at a ranch to fund their dream of owning their own ranch and being independent. However, it is due to Lennie, who, as Steinbeck effectively conveys throughout the novel, is a physically intimidating but mentally childish man, that their American dream is shattered, as a result of his love for petting soft things and his, unbeknown to him, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Among the most prominent of Lennie s sympathetic attributes is undoubtedly his frightened nature. This characteristic is conveyed consistently throughout the novel even when Lennie loses his temper it is due to fear. His timidity is often due to being scared of displeasing George, who acts as Lennie s father figure: Lennie looked timidly over to him. George? Here, Lennie appears to be asking for permission from George to ask a question, for fear that George will be angry. This demonstrates Lennie s timidity and lack of confidence, as well as his childishness and dependence on George. One significant incident which is used to establish this characteristic is when Curley attacks Lennie in the bunkhouse. Lennie is terrified, and the novel states that he covered his face with his huge paws and bleated with terror . Here, the author uses metaphor to compare Lennie to an animal. He describes Lennie s hands as paws, and the noise he is making as bleating. This reinforces the irony that Lennie is so physically powerful but so mentally weak, as, despite being strong, with paws like such of a bear, he is making a noise like that of a lamb. By characterising Lennie in this way, the author presents him as an fearful and innocent character, making the reader feel sympathy for him. Another way that Steinbeck creates sympathy for the character of Lennie is by portraying him as childlike, with George taking the role of his father figure. For example, ... Anything Helps is the first story in the collection and it is based on a homeless man reverting to writing on cardboard signs to afford the new Harry Potter Book for his son. The narrator loses his son to child protective services shortly after his wife, Julie, overdosed on drugs. This leaves the narrator, Bit, reminiscing back on his life and wishing he could have done things differently. The theme in present society, that we must pursue our dreams so we may live our lives with no regrets is portrayed in the short story through symbolism, imagery, and character traits. Throughout the story, Bit periodically mentions the many regrets he has in his life and things he wished to one day accomplish. The narrator uses symbolism in the short story to represent the broken relationship he has with his son. The Harry Potter book is a symbol of what Bit s family could have been; the abuse of drugs has led to the overdose of his wife and separation from his son. The author wrote, Bit kind of wishes he d kept up with the books, before the dominos started going: before CPS came, before Julie got so hopeless and strung out, before... (pg.21). • 32. 1960-1980 Essay In 1957 there was a volcanic eruption off the Azorean island of Faial and a series of earthquakes that displaced many families from their homes. The U.S. Azorean Relief Act in the summer of 1958 allowed for the entry of 4,811 Portuguese (p.3). Pap (1996), for example, estimates that half of the Azorean population in 1965 had personal or family ties in the US. The establishment of Portuguese speaking communities before 1921 thus encouraged, enabled, and channeled post 1957 migration. The peak years for Portuguese migration to the US were thus 1967 1970, when immigrants averaged over 13,000 per year (Bailey, 2000). The Azorean population reached a peak of 330,000 in 1960, but by 1974 had shrunk to 259,000 (Chapin, 1989). Several factors contributed to the large scale emigration from the Azores but the principal reason was poverty. The Azores were undeveloped in part due to their geographic isolation from continental Portugal, with an approximate distance of 1000 miles of ocean separating the two regions. Under the regime of António de Oliveira Salazar, Europe s longest fascist dictatorship 1926 1974, power was highly centralized in Lisbon. Even Azorean imports and exports had to pass through ... Robert Frost The Road Not Taken Analysis The Road Not Taken written by Robert Frost uses several poetic devices such as imagery and personification to emphasize how indecisive Frost is about his decision on which road he should take. The Road Not Taken is about how the narrator chooses a path that he was once confused and worried about but over time become content with his final decision. Frost uses the debating between the two roads to show the reader the two choices that are presented to him and how those two choices offer countless amount of possibilities. There are multiple different ways to decipher the poem, but Frost connects with the reader in the sense that no matter what road is taken, another road will later replace the past road. Frost begins to notice one of the two roads looks more worn down than the other, Though as for that the passing there had worn them really about the same this is representing real life traumas and can show the decision making process when choosing between two options. Looking down one of the roads of life before actually following the trail shows a different perspective and point of view from the basic stand point of only seeing a problem one way and never seeing the problem or decision from another point of view. Frost decides in the end to take one of the paths and says he will take the second path another day although he may never go back to the starting point of his journey. It is more than just human instinct to not want to take the more unnatural or harmful pathway; it is easier to take the cleaner path so that the problem will be over with faster and Frost depicts this problem perfectly in the form of a short poem. Frost entrances the reader s mind with the bountiful amount of imagery within the poem. Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, the comforting and well known nature that Frost describes contradicts against the terrifying reality of the unknown through decision making. Frost goes on to explain how he, as many others do, try to visualize what his life would be like if he were to go down one of the roads he chose, Long I stood and looked down one as far as I could worrying about how decisions will affect every independent life can be a hassle and trying to understand and fully ... • 39. John Locke Freedom Analysis John Locke was one of the first philosophers out of many who protested about government not giving the people the freedom that they deserve. As we know Locke and Hobbes are great thinkers, however they had divergent belief in the way they see the human. Throughout Locke s life, he had various sublime ideas which tells that the power of monarchy (Kings) and monarchs should be limited and they should respect the rights of their citizens. Locke s implicitly refuted the idea that Kings rule people according to the divine right, and defended that the human being should have the natural rights. For Locke s believes people deserve freedom, though there were rules that was implemented, it shouldn t be strict to have an order society. An example in a class, having a terror professor will gives nervous breakdown feeling to student because of being very strict rule. Then result, some of the students will be afraid to give their opinion freely, or some might drop their subjects to this professor. So how can this professor produce a very organized and productive class if his/her students were frightened by his strict rules. Unlike having a professor who have minimize rules but got sense of humor the students will feel at ease to share their ideas and they will be courage to pursue more their studies for better future. • 40. Examples Of Miscommunication In Dante s Inferno Vladimir Zhdanov Mrs. Nickel Honors Freshman Literature and Composition 29 January 2013 Compassion into Indifference The true value of a human being can be found in the degree to which he has attained liberation from the self and mind . This quote by Albert Einstein demonstrates the emotional struggle of Dante as he traversed through hell. The Inferno, as a story, has metamorphosised the way people envision compassion. Dante showed his readers that compassion is repugnant in order to develop into a more spiritually enlightened individual. The Inferno, by Dante Alighieri, presents that Dante s reaction to sinners from compassion and pity to indifference reflects his journey from naïveté to spiritual enlightenment, through the empathy of Dante, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dante s realization begins with the Sowers of Scandal and Schism, where he meets a soul who refuses to talk to Dante. Here Dante says to a soul, You, who cast your eyes upon the ground, if these features are not false, must be Venedico Caccianemico, but what brings you to sauces so piquant? (Alighieri, XVIII 49). At this point, Dante is now more mature in his judgment of sins. Rather than feel pity for this sinner, he mocks the sinner for being submerged in a pile of excrement. His words do not present any compassion for the sinner. Dante yet again shows his maturity when he speaks to Count Ugolino, where he says, For if Count Ugolino had the fame of having thy castles thee betrayed, thou should not on such cross have put his sons (Alighieri, XXXIII 85). Dante feels no compassion for the Count, and condemns his for his apostate crime. Finally, Dante demonstrates floccinaucinihilipilification when he meets Bocca Delgi Abate. When Dante sees him, and then by the scalp I seized upon him, and said: it need to be thou name thyself or not a hair remains upon thee here (Alighieri, XXXIII 96). As a result, Dante finally realizes that sinners deserve their punishment. Rather than just ignore this sinner, Dante even impertinently pulls out the sinner s hair to show his understanding of indifference. Thus, this realization has made it possible for Dante ... Leniency is shown to be a heroic act to help those deemed ?good.? Contributions to the Field of Public Administration In their books, Riccucci and Maynard Moody Musheno expose the reader to the front line world of bureaucratic agencies. It means more than just paying your bills and expenses because what if, one day your whole entire house burns down as well as all of your beloved belongings? Are you going to be positive that you and your family will be okay? It all comes down to being prepared for financial curve balls, because you never know what could happen; life sure does know how to surprise us. I feel like if you re able to get all of your needs taken care of, still be able to do something s that you want and plan for your future ( put money away for savings) then you re living right. It may not always be the easiest thing to do or conquer, but it s a goal most everyone is trying to reach. Having to worry about how you and your family are going to survive is a stressful and scary feeling that I m sure no one wants to feel.
