Part One Of Don Quixote By Miguel De Cervantes
Entering a fantasy land like Disney World is one thing; reconstructing the real world into a fantasy
land is another. The reconfiguration of the real world into an imaginary one summarizes what Part
One of Don Quixote, written by Miguel de Cervantes, is about. The story narrates a parody of Spain s
historical idea of chivalry by starring Don Quixote, a man obsessed with nobility. Don Quixote walks
through a knight errant journey with the faithful peasant Sancho Panza and creates the journey by
mentally transforming everything, such as Spain s prostitutes into ladies, windmills into ferocious
giants, inns into luxurious castles, etc. Contrary to the main overview of the story, Cervantes didn t
simply write Part One of Don Quixote to poke fun ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first goal suggests pride, the second, faith. These two qualities speak loudly for why Don Quixote
dreamed of fighting in the name of chivalry. Now Quixote s weakness in these two qualities certainly
affect his character, but it s the strengths that make him admire knights. In regards to fame, nothing
seemed more glorious than being a glamorous and gallant knight in 16th century Spain so Don
Quixote symbolically represented his patriotism towards Spain. He hides nothing when it comes to his
pride. In fact, he said I know that I can be not only all of those whom I have mentioned, but every one
of the Twelve Peers of France, and every one of the Nine Worthies as well, because all the deeds
performed by them both singly and together will be exceeded by mine (Cervantes 50). Boasting about
exceeding historical figures of chivalry, especially considering the fact the comment was to his
neighbor, demonstrated his yearning dream for fame. Every soldier gives up his or her life with some
hope their lives would be remembered for serving a

Minoan Mycenaean Weapons
The Minoan and Mycenaean cultures lived among the later Greeks far after they were gone. There are
many things in their culture used by the later Greeks. The biggest things carried on by the Greeks were
the advancements in technology by the Minoan and Mycenaean people. Let me explain in more detail
what technology they helped the Greeks to get better at over time. Weapons Bronze was the preferred
meatal for weapons before the Minoan and Mycenaean people. The use of tin, copper, silver, and gold
were used by them as well. These metals were readily available to the Minoan and Mycenaean people
in mines and deposits in the Mediterranean basin. Except for tin which came from the British Isles.
The weapons of choice for the Minoan and Mycenaean people were daggers, swords, spears, and
javelins. These weapons allowed them to defend themselves any way possible. Defending themselves
with weapons were not the only things they created with these metals. The Minoan and Mycenaean
people created body armor such as shields, helmets, and leg and arm coverings. The body armor was
just as important as the weapons. Now the people have an opportunity to protect their body, and have
a higher chance of survival when taking a blow to the body (Matthews, ... Show more content on

The chariot was a light vehicle, usually on two wheels, and drawn by one or more horses. The chariots
usually carried two standing riders, a driver and a fighter using bow and arrow or javelins. These
chariots were used in war, and used in hunting as well. These chariots were just the beginning, and
improvements were just around the corner. By 1300 BCE the chariots were redesigned to have six
wheel spokes instead of only four and the adding of axles under the rear platform. The addition of the
axles underneath the rear platform enhanced the stability and maneuverability of the chariots

The Consequences Of Alcohol And Addiction
The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of alcohol is health problems and addiction. The
more à person drinks the more they are going to want more alcohol, this is when people start
becoming addicted to drinking alcohol regularly. Alcohol addiction is à serious mental health problem
, there are also other health problems that are linked to alcohol use. The consequences of drinking
alcohol are bad and can lead to many negative things that not only affect your life but everyone else
around you. Alcohol dependence can occur after à person has been drinking recklessly time after time.
Abusing alcohol can not only bring someone health problems to their body but it can also affect their
mental state, when à person is intoxicated they do not think about what they are doing and they make
careless decisions that affect them and the people around them. Alcohol can cause problems in
relationships with people around you because when you are intoxicated you do not act like yourself
and you make decisions not thinking on about the consequences or how you are affecting the people
around you. Alcohol can make you become violent and it can make you do things you would usually
not do. Alcohol can cause you to have memory loss and blackouts, it can even make you pass ... Show

Cobain And Nirvana
Kurt Cobain and Nirvana Nirvana was a band started by Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic in the early
90 s. They d released several albums before April 5, 1994, when Kurt Cobain supposedly took his own
life. Nirvana was very popular during its time, but of course, Kurt had a life before he met Krist and
before Nirvana was born. There was also a lot the band had done together before the date of April 5,
when Nirvana had to end. Kurt Cobain did a lot before he started Nirvana. As a child, Kurt Cobain
loved art and music. He showed talent in both areas. He taught himself to play piano and he played
guitar, also little league baseball. (Kurt Cobain biography.com) Also said by Rolling Stone, He came
from a musical family. . . At four, Cobain began singing and playing piano, and gravitated to the music
of bands ranging from the Beatles to the Ramones. When Kurt was fourteen, he got his first guitar and
learned to play. He dropped out of high school his senior year due to bullying, and then he started
hanging around local band rehearsals.

Nirvana was ended on April 5, 1994, when Kurt Cobain allegedly took his own life. On April 8,
Cobain s body was found with a gunshot wound in his head. Not everybody believes it was suicide
though, some believe Courtney Love, his own wife, hired someone to kill him for her, and made it
look as if it were a suicide. Although it does not matter now. Unfortunately Nirvana is no longer a
band and there is no way to undo that, but the former members of Nirvana went on and continued
making music, it was Nirvana s passion. Thankfully, Cobain s music is still remembered and loved,
and it will be remembered and loved from the time it was number one. Kurt Cobain left a his legacy
behind, and he left a massive handprint on his era of music. An era of music never to be

The Good Earth Wang Lung s Character
Pearl S. Buck s character, Wang Lung, is one who is often acting in immoral ways, but his situation,
along with his thoughts, contribute to why the audience can sympathize with him. Wang Lung lives in
rural China in the early Twentieth century where certain actions, such as selling children, is acceptable
within his culture. His moral ambiguity fluctuates as he conforms to societal views or acts within
acceptable bounds in society s current standards. Throughout The Good Earth, desperate situations
cause distressed individuals to become irrational and act immorally. This thematic notion is evident
during the most dramatic scenes in the novel. The positive and negative experiences associated with

His moral ambiguity is heavily influenced by outside forces in his life that changes his view upon the
world. The most excusable action in the eyes of the readers is when he commits a crime because his
family is struggling in the southern city. Other citizens stricken by poverty tell Wang Lung that the
riches do not belong to the wealthy, but to the poor. This conflicts with his belief that God determines
one s fate and way in life. Wang Lung goes against his morals and commits robbery because of his
influence from others and the situation he was thrust into. This action determines Wang Lung s
wealthy future, but also symbolizes overcoming an obstacle, in this case, overcoming his internal
conflict with his morals. The audience begins to notice the shift in Wang Lung s character which will
continue to develop negatively as his values are no longer intact. Pearl S. Buck s character, Wang

nature is evident through many incidents involving himself and his family, which mirrors the theme of

felony trial in New York. The amount of African Americans killed solely based of skin color
throughout history is astonishing from lynching to police brutality. The American dream was
something everyone coveted because it was the opportunity of success and prosperity in society. This
included living in the suburbs with a family with a successful job. For many this was available

Colombia Civil War
Colombia gained its independence in the late 1800s from Spanish forces due to the efforts of Simon
Bolivar (Gascoigne, 2001, ongoing). After going through a series of name changes, the Republic of
Colombia was deemed the official name of the country and has remains to this day. Colombia s history
of violence has plagued the country since La Violencia in the 1950s, during which time the
conservative and liberal parties fought over dominance of the South American nation (Gascoigne,
2001, ongoing). The war lasted for ten years and was only stopped by the implementation of the
National Front. The National Front, a plan created by the government of Colombia, was a deal made
between the conservatives and the liberals that would ensure that every four years a member of the
opposite party would be elected to rule the country (Mother Earth Travel, 2013). The deal was meant

Brand Luther Chapter Summary
Brand Luther, written by Andrew Pettergree, approaches the life of Martin Luther and seeks to explain
how a monk took his small town, turned it into one of the largest publishing centers of Germany, made
his name known by all, and gave birth to the period in time known as the Protestant Reformation. The
book itself is divided into twelve chapters, each going into detail about events leading up to, as well
as, during the Reformation, and the events that transpired after the death of Martin Luther. Beginning
in Part One, A Single Man, the first chapter and second chapters, A Small Town in Germany and
Making of a Revolutionary, discusses the origins of the town of Wittenberg, the book trade of
Germany prior to Luther s influence, the elector of Saxony, Luther s early life and that would lead to
his attack on indulgences, Frederick the Wise s ambition for the town of Wittenberg and the work he
put into the town in order to make it both a religious as well as intellectual powerhouse that it would
come to be known as. Overall, this chapter serves the purpose of opening to the events that would
transpire regarding Luther, Wittenberg, the Catholic Church, and the printing industry of Germany.

Persuasive Essay On Trophies
How special are trophies? If you hand out trophies to everyone for no reason the kids feel like that
they shouldn t try to get better, and if you give out a trophy to a kid that deserves it will earn hard

way around.A couple years ago I was on a team for my second year after every game we played if we

the ball I would practice more and more so I could get the ball at the very last game I was always

Essay about Argentina
Argentina
Europeans arrived in the region with the 1502 voyage of Amerigo Vespucci. Spanish navigator Juan
Diaz de Solias visited what is now Argentina in 1516. Spain established a permanent colony on the
site of Buenos Aires in 1580. They further integrated Argentina into their empire following the
establishment of the Vice Royalty of Rio de la Plata in 1776, and Buenos Aires became a flourishing
port.
Buenos Aires formally declared independence from Spain on July 9, 1816. Argentines revere General
Jose de San Martin, who campaigned in Argentina, Chile, and Peru, as the hero of their national

New social and political forces were seeking political power. These included the modern military and
the labor movement that emerged from the growing urban working class.
The military ousted Argentina s constitutional government in 1943. Peron, then an army colonel, was
one of the coup s leaders, and he soon became the government s dominant figure as minister of labor.
Elections carried him to the presidency in 1946. He aggressively pursued policies aimed at giving an
economic and political voice to the working class and greatly expanded the number of unionized
workers. In 1947, Peron announced the first five year plan based on nationalization and
industrialization. He presented himself as a friend of labor and assisted in establishing the powerful
General Confederation of Labor (CGT). Peron s dynamic wife, Eva Duarte de Peron, known as Evita
(1919 1952), helped her husband develop his appeals to labor and women s groups. Women obtained
the right to vote in 1947.
Peron won reelection in 1952, but the military deposed him in 1955. He went into exile, eventually
settling in Spain. In the 1950s and 1960s, military and civilian administrations traded power. They
tried, with limited success, to deal with diminished economic growth and continued social and labor
demands. When military governments

A Separate Peace By John Knowles Essay
In A Separate Peace, a realistic fictional novel by John Knowles, World War 2 gradually encroaches
upon and finally dominates life at Devon. The War is an ever present focus, if not focus then presence,
that fell upon the students of Devon. That was the whole point wasn t it? Train hard in a boarding
school to prepare for war. The war impinged itself upon the school through the boys views, jargon,
and also was brought to the school. World War II infringed Devon through the boys views. This can be
found throughout the book, A Separate Peace. However, it can be expressed best by a quote found on
page 15. It states, We were not even Upper Middler exactly. For this was the Summer Session, just
established to keep up with the pace of the war. We were in shaky transit that summer from the
groveling status of Lower Middlers to the near respectability of Upper Middlers. The class above,
seniors, draft bait, practically soldiers, rushed ahead of us toward the war. They were caught up in
accelerated courses and first aid programs and a physical hardening regimen, which included jumping
from this tree. We were still calmly, numbly reading Virgil and playing tag in the river farther
downstream. Until Finny thought of the tree. (Knowls) The representative quote above signifies how
the war has invaded the boys views in multiple ways. It shows this through the tree, instead of seeing
it as simply what it is, it was viewed as a training device. Additionally, being draft bait is

Lartington and explore the sylvan valley of Deepdale Beck where a wide range of flora and fauna can

Barnard Castle, or Barney as it is more affection

the shadow of Bernard de Balliol s magnificent fortress, after which it is named. The castle dates from
1125 when the original timber structure was rebuilt in stone. It stands 80 feet (24m) above the river
Tees and uses the natural defence of almost sheer cliffs on the west and south sides. The remains
include the Great Hall and a large circular keep the Round Tower, also known as the Balliol Tower.

Leaving the village we pass the Lartington Aqueduct and then continue into the sylvan valley of

South Durham and Lancashire Union Railway ran. We also pass the site of the Deepdale Viaduct,
opened in 1861, to carry the railway on to Tebay. This was 740 feet (225m) in length with eleven
spans across the river and it stood 161 feet (49m) above Deepdale Beck.
Deepdale contains some of the richest deciduous woodland in Upper Teesdale and is a haven for birds
and wild flowers. Great spotted woodpecker, robin, tree creeper and grey wagtail are often seen and,

Dating Research
The appropriate age to start dating is always a debate. People have diverse views on the age which
someone should date. Dating can be a magnificent social experience, it can also be a negative social
experience. A person needs to be mature enough to understand the feelings that go with dating a
significant other. Most importantly, the goal is to have fun, find a compatible mate, and keep the heart
break to a minimum To begin, each generation had an unlike view on dating and when to start dating.
For example, Marcia Cullom a mother, grandmother, and a great grandmother states, Things were

A child s first heartbreak could be very scaring and emotional. When going through a heartbreak at an
older age, it is known that they do not last forever and the heart will be healed, but at a younger aged
people believe that the hurt and pain is bottomless. Parents need to treat these heartbreaking feelings
seriously and be very sensitive when dealing with them. Moms and dads could do a number of things
to help their child through heartbreak. First, they could acknowledge that their child is in pain and they
will be happy again. Second, they should let their child feel sad and to cry about their break up.
Letting them express their feelings is very important because next time they will know it is okay to
express their feelings and they should not keep them bottled up. Third, the parent should encourage
them to spend time with their friends, but not push them to spend time with their friends. When the
child is ready to socialize, they will without hesitation. Lastly, the parent should share a story about
their young dating experiences. Sharing these stories shows the child that everyone goes through it,
and the heartbreak does not last forever. These helpful ideas could help the child get over their break

Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy composed by William Shakespeare, based on the long narrative poem
by Arthur Brooke, The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet, which is based on an earlier Italian
story. The play takes place in Verona, Italy. The exact time period of the text is not directly addressed,
but is supposedly in the 1590 s. The play focuses on two characters, Romeo and Juliet, each from one
of two feuding families, the Montagues and the Capulets. Romeo is of Montague blood while Juliet is
a descendant of the Capulets.
In Act I, Romeo had been in love with Rosaline, a member of the Capulets. He claims that he is deeply
in love, however, she does not feel the same way. Benvolio, the cousin of Romeo, made it his mission
to help Romeo

Teenage Adoletic Development And The Effects Of Teenage...
Humans are naturally inclined to explore the unknown and get to know more people. Some of the
people they meet they may feel attracted to and care to date them. This is completely normal for the
average human to do. Where it becomes a bit more complicated is in the teenage demographics.
Teenagers tend to try out relationships to see what it really takes to be devoted to someone and to
practice relationship skills for the future. These decisions made in adolescence will shape the
decisions that will be made in the future. Literature plays a fine role in displaying effects of teenage
romance. In Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet work to build a relationship at a young
age, but because of their complicated family problems, it ultimately ends in disaster. While it lasted,
their relationship serves to teach them newer concepts and helped them to grow new and healthy traits.
Despite the potential heartbreak, romantic relationships are a healthy part of teenage development.
When looking at the science behind the teenage brain, it is completely healthy for teens to explore
new romantic relationships. Numerous lab tests have been conducted to monitor the decision making
processes of young adults. Brown University s Michael Frank was able to explain the key parts to an
adolescent s brain development. Through studies, he was able to identify how the prefrontal cortex,
the decision maker of the brain, tends to lag behind in development. The prefrontal cortex plays a

Tasks Facing The German Woman
Elsa Herrmann believed that the new woman was strong and independent. Women started to stray
away from traditional views in 1930. The Nazis viewed womanhood completely different from what
the new woman represented. As described by Elsbeth Zander, in Tasks Facing the German Woman,
women were to stand by their husband and raise their children to fight for the fatherland. The Nazis
rejected the new woman in order to keep the fatherland in line. While the new woman is an
independent and self reliant person, the Nazis and other German civilians view womanhood as
producing the ideal offspring to support the fatherland.
Elsa Herrmann believed that the new woman was independent and powerful. Previously women were
in charge of cleaning, cooking, and taking care of the children. Day in and day out the household
chores were her responsibilities. In This Is the New Woman, Elsa explains, Then she collapsed

In Tasks Facing the German Woman, Elsbeth Zander states, We women must, through our quiet,
honest work, inspire the German male to do noble things once more! The German woman shall and
must again be worth sacrificing for. Elsbeth believed that women were stronger for staying by their
man and serving their man s needs. This, in a sense, made them worth sacrificing for. Where Elsa
believes that women should have a voice in the system, Elsbeth believes that women should work
quietly in order to achieve greatness. In Elsbeth s eyes a woman is more desirable if she sticks to the
traditional values in life. A woman is supposed to teach the children, cook the meals, and clean the
house. She believed that all of these traits would help rebuild the fatherland. Women were supposed to

A Code Hero in Hemingway s Books Essay
A Code Hero in Hemingway s Books
Robert Jordan has been defined as a Hemingway code hero. In Hemingway s books, a code hero is
usually male, as Hemingway s books seem to have a similarity to Hemingway himself. These code
heroes may have been previously wounded or gone through some sort of an ordeal, and so they could
have a drinking problem, or a problem sleeping. They seem to be disillusioned, and/or self oriented,
and are not usually loyal to a large cause, but rather a small group of people or a relatively small idea
or thing. In For Whom the Bell Tolls, Robert Jordan, the code hero, most likely dies at the end. If it
were not for his loyalty to a small group, the events in the novel would probably not have transpired as

Indecision could provide a reason for having a sleeping problem, as he does some things other than
sleeping at night, one of the criteria for a code hero.
Disillusionment can be seen as the main contributor to the code hero definition. Jordan s
disillusionment grows throughout the novel, to the point where he doesn t believe in the rebel cause
whatsoever, war itself, or the killing of other human beings in the name of a cause. After Jordan kills
the fascist who wanders near his sleeping bag, he is bothered by a constant feeling of guilt. It seems
that Jordan experiences a change as the novel progresses, but his determination to complete the very
dangerous mission never wavers, even though it becomes very clear that they will probably not
escape. His code hero ethic to do what he needs to do manages to defeat his feelings for Maria, his
growing negative feeling about the cause, and war itself. If Jordan had simply abandoned the mission,
he would have been able to live happily ever after with Maria, but he would have let general Golz
down by not doing what he was sent to do.
At the end of the novel, Jordan ends being injured in the process of trying to escape. He convinces
Maria to leave him and escape with the rest of the band. Agustin even offers to put him out of his
misery, so he doesn t have to face the approaching fascists. Jordan, however, does not want to go out
without a fight. By

Residential Lease Contract Case Study
Residential tenants should be familiar with specific clauses that seek to eliminate protections afforded
to tenants by California law. Under California s Civil Code, certain provisions in a residential lease are
unenforceable and a tenant may not waive these enumerated rights. Some of the common clauses to be
aware of when reviewing a residential lease contract include:
Right to repair and deduct. Tenants have the right to occupy a habitable premises. If the landlord fails
to make basic repairs to maintain the habitability of the property, the tenant may repair damages and
deduct the amount from the rent owed to the landlord. Any lease agreement that prohibits this right is

Ethos Pathos And Logos In Astrophil And Stella
In sonnet one of Sidney s Astrophil and Stella , he utilizes reading, persuasion, and experience to win
the affection of his lover, Stella. All three of these terms tie in together with one another and coincide
with the three forms of rhetoric: logos, pathos, and ethos. Sidney commits a great amount of time to
articulate his love for Stella through his writing, logic, and rhetoric. The speaker realizes that the only
way to fully express his love for Stella in his poetry is to write from his heart, using the three forms of

reasons as to why she should pity him. He persuades her through his rhetoric and reading. He believes

Impact Of General Aviation On Capacity At Sea Tac
Having thoroughly reviewed the history, value, financial performance, marking, and asset structure of
Alaska Airlines, we will now take a slight step back from directly reviewing the selected airline to
assess the viability of the main hub airport for Alaska Airlines, Seattle Tacoma International Airport
(SEA TAC). As such, we will review the current market demand, historical growth, forecasted growth
predictions, as well as airfield capacities in current state and future development plans including the
impacts associated with NextGen Technologies. Furthermore, we will review the impact of general
aviation on capacity at SEA TAC.
Regarding aviation demand as a historical and predicted growth measure at SEA TAC, there has been
a significant departure from the predicted rates in the previous two years. More specifically, using
enplanements as a measure of comparative growth for predictive models, the Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) forecasted average growth of 2.55% annually over the period of 2014 to 2040
(Terminal area forecast summary). Astonishingly, SEA TAC saw an unprecedented growth of 7.7% in
2014 and an even more dramatic growth of 12.9% in 2015 which included a 14.6% increase in
international traveler enplanement (News release: Sea tac airport growth). Comparatively,
representing these numbers as total annual passengers indicate 37 million passengers in 2014, 42.3
million in 2015 and an anticipated growth to 66 million by 2034, or a further 56% growth over

The Witch And Witchcraft
For many centuries, witches have been around. The meaning of the word witch has changed over time.
Before, it was a gender neutral term but it is now associated with women. There are different types of
witches and they each had different powers. The word witch came from the word Wicca which is an
old English word and slowly, it was changed to wicked by the Catholic Church. For as long as it was
around, witches and witchcraft were looked at negatively and those who practiced witchcraft were
poorly treated. Despite the time difference and geographical areas, there were similarities in how
women, witches, and those who were accused were treated. Treatment towards witches was influenced
by oral stories, experiences, and pop culture.
The word Wicca means wisdom. The witches were turned to when one needed help. Witches of
different types used spells, magic, and potions. Many had feared witches, especially the Catholic
church. Slowly the meaning was changed to wicked. Some types of witches included witch doctors,
Halloween witch, seductress or sire, Wiccan, voodoo witch, satanist, and many more. A witch doctor
and voodoo witch are someone who uses power to heal and protect against other s magic. A
Halloween witch is is a stereotypical witch that is portrayed as the complete opposite of what a
woman should be, and is represented as an ugly, old, evil, hag. A seducing woman who uses her looks
as a mean to lure one in is a seductress or sire. A Wiccan is one who practices the old religion and
believes in the power of the Earth. One who worships the Devil is a satanist. Harmless or not, witches
and those accused of witches were poorly treated. In different places, treatment was similar. Treatment
included beatings, imprisonment, and death. Many were accused, outed, interrogated, shamed,
arrested, tortured, segregated, or killed. Anyone and everyone could be accused but the major targets
were women, widows, the poor, the elderly, those who used herbal remedies, and those with
knowledge in medicine and astrology.
In Africa, specifically Northern Ghana, women were terrorized when accused of witchcraft ( Witches
In Exile ). Women who were accused were cast from their family, sent to witch camps, and were

that he fulfilled the messianic duties that were a part of the Jewish belief which was in place well

DUNE 9th Grade Essay
DUNE Often there comes a book that I enjoy or never heard of before, yet there comes one book that
is both known for its legacy and impact on the world of literature. However, one book comes along
that is both a classic and legend in a certain genre. That one book in particular is the 1965 classic
DUNE by Frank Herbert. Before I ever read the book, I already had some preexisting knowledge
thanks to the video games, the 1984 movie version by David Lynch, and a documentary about a
version by Alejandro Jodorowsky that never got made. So after reading the book, my response is that
DUNE is both remarkable and good.
The story of DUNE is set in a far future where humanity has evolved into a galactic empire that
expands all over the universe, but the main setting is set on a barren desert called Arrakis also known
as DUNE. Every noble house and a company try to gain control of the planet all because of a known
resource called spice, the spice in the story is used for certain duties including galactic space travel.

One of the aspects is largely the setting being influenced by Byzantine, Arab, and Persian culture with
some examples in the use of Jihad; the prophet is being called Maud Dib, and the powerful galactic

characters and their motivation along with their outcomes. An example of this is the hero Paul
Atreides, in the story he is considered to be The One who would lead about great change to a tribe
called the Freman. The reason for this is because the author leaves cryptic reference to help establish
the hero s position in the story. Then there is the villain Baron Harkonnen, throughout the story he is
seen as cruel and ruthless toward his own domain or anyone that would be seen as a rival toward

Essay on Odysseus as Pawn of the Gods in Homer s Odyssey
Odysseus as Pawn of the Gods in The Odyssey
Throughout literature characters have relied upon entities greater then themselves to furnish them with
aid as they meet the many challenges they must face. The Odyssey is a tale of Odysseus epic journey
and the many obstacles that bar his return home. But Odysseus is not alone in this struggle and
receives aid from many gods, especially the clear eyed goddess Athena. There are times when
Odysseus beseeches the gods for aid, but other times he is too foolhardy to receive aid from even the
immortal gods. In Homer s The Odyssey, Odysseus journey revolves around the cyclical phases of his
dependence, independence and his return to reliance upon the gods aid.

marvels that Telemachus must be truly favored ...if when so young the gods become [his] guides (26).
Such qualities in Telemachus constantly remind the reader of the dependence on the gods aid
Odysseus has developed in his travels.
Though Odysseus is as great a man as ever lived, he is still only mortal and at the gods mercy.
Odysseus does not control his own destiny, but instead the gods determine what shall befall him and
whether he shall ever reach his home. Odysseus is only a man and hard is a god for mortal man to
master (36) even if he is great amongst his brethren. Odysseus can not control the gods anymore then
he can control his fate and so he is left at their mercy. Even Zeus, who gives Odysseus many signs,
will sometimes deal Odysseus woe which he is powerless to stop. To avenge the Sun god upon
Odysseus evil crew, ...Zeus with a gleaming bolt smote [Odysseus ] swift ship and wrecked it in the
middle of the wine dark sea (47). Such acts illustrate the control that the gods exercise over Odysseus
and his inability to deliver himself from woe.

themselves on the patient s shoes in order to develop that connection often times they would even

Machiavelli And Warfare
The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli (1469 1527) is one of the most important surviving texts on
political philosophy to date. In The Prince, Machiavelli provides a guide to ruling, complete with
some of the more unpleasant necessities that come with maintaining power. Though Machiavelli
explores a myriad of ways to achieve political power, one of his biggest focuses is on how to conduct
warfare and its importance to a healthy state. The importance of warfare in Machiavelli is great
because it informs the rest of his reign and the surrounding politics. He himself outlines the
importance of arms by saying that, the chief foundations of all states, whether new, old, or mixed, are
good laws and good arms and that there cannot be good laws where there are not good arms, and
where there are good arms there must be good laws (44). It is based off of this importance of the
military that Machiavelli devotes much of The Prince to the conducting of good war and the
importance of its role in politics and the stability of state. To understand the work of Machiavelli is to
understand law and politics, topics that, for Machiavelli, are founded on military strength.

repercussions for this action are a stronger and more dedicated force. While mercenaries and

How Is John D Rockefeller A Captain Of Industry
To describe John D. Rockefeller in one word would be an extremely difficult, if not impossible, thing
to do. Rockefeller was known by so many things in his time and still today; a captain of industry who
revolutionised the American economy with new business practices and keen management of what he
controlled, a robber baron who lied and cheated his way to the top with back room dealings and taking
advantage of the most disadvantaged of people. In his early life, Rockefeller grew up in Richmond,
New York with his two brothers and two sisters about 20 years before the start of the Civil War as the
child of Eliza Davison and William Avery Rockefeller. His father was con artist who spent most of
John s life traveling selling his various elixirs and his mother was a devout Baptist who John said
shaped his life and most of his religious views for the rest of his life. Towards the end of his life,
Rockefeller had built up a beyond substantial fortune but, seeing as how he was now retired from the
oil industry and had no desire to invest into a new business, he decided to follow Andrew Carnegie s
Gospel of Wealth by donating the bulk of his wealth to charity. John D. Rockefeller was truly a man
who was almost undefinable despite the simple black and white labels that most people and historians
have pinned upon him, as we examine his life it can be determined that Rockefeller was neither an evil
man nor a good one but someone who lived his life in the grey. To begin the look at

  • 2. Part One Of Don Quixote By Miguel De Cervantes Entering a fantasy land like Disney World is one thing; reconstructing the real world into a fantasy land is another. The reconfiguration of the real world into an imaginary one summarizes what Part One of Don Quixote, written by Miguel de Cervantes, is about. The story narrates a parody of Spain s historical idea of chivalry by starring Don Quixote, a man obsessed with nobility. Don Quixote walks through a knight errant journey with the faithful peasant Sancho Panza and creates the journey by mentally transforming everything, such as Spain s prostitutes into ladies, windmills into ferocious giants, inns into luxurious castles, etc. Contrary to the main overview of the story, Cervantes didn t simply write Part One of Don Quixote to poke fun ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first goal suggests pride, the second, faith. These two qualities speak loudly for why Don Quixote dreamed of fighting in the name of chivalry. Now Quixote s weakness in these two qualities certainly affect his character, but it s the strengths that make him admire knights. In regards to fame, nothing seemed more glorious than being a glamorous and gallant knight in 16th century Spain so Don Quixote symbolically represented his patriotism towards Spain. He hides nothing when it comes to his pride. In fact, he said I know that I can be not only all of those whom I have mentioned, but every one of the Twelve Peers of France, and every one of the Nine Worthies as well, because all the deeds performed by them both singly and together will be exceeded by mine (Cervantes 50). Boasting about exceeding historical figures of chivalry, especially considering the fact the comment was to his neighbor, demonstrated his yearning dream for fame. Every soldier gives up his or her life with some hope their lives would be remembered for serving a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The biggest things carried on by the Greeks were the advancements in technology by the Minoan and Mycenaean people. Let me explain in more detail what technology they helped the Greeks to get better at over time. Weapons Bronze was the preferred meatal for weapons before the Minoan and Mycenaean people. The use of tin, copper, silver, and gold were used by them as well. These metals were readily available to the Minoan and Mycenaean people in mines and deposits in the Mediterranean basin. Except for tin which came from the British Isles. The weapons of choice for the Minoan and Mycenaean people were daggers, swords, spears, and javelins. These weapons allowed them to defend themselves any way possible. Defending themselves with weapons were not the only things they created with these metals. The Minoan and Mycenaean people created body armor such as shields, helmets, and leg and arm coverings. The body armor was just as important as the weapons. Now the people have an opportunity to protect their body, and have a higher chance of survival when taking a blow to the body (Matthews, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
