The lymphatic system consists of lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes that maintain fluid balance in the body. It returns leaked protein-rich fluid from tissues back to the bloodstream and transports absorbed fats and filters dead cells. Lymphangitis is an inflammation of the lymphatic vessels caused by bacteria or other pathogens that leads to red streaks, fever, pain, and swollen lymph nodes. Lymphadenopathy refers to enlarged lymph nodes and has local or generalized causes like infections, autoimmune disease, or malignancy. Lymphedema is abnormal swelling in limbs due to excessive lymph fluid caused by a defective lymphatic system, with symptoms of pain, burning, and immobility.
