2. Emily Dickinson s Poetry Final Essay

Dr. Worley
Final Exam
Essay Question A Through the process of my liberal arts education, I have had several teachers
and professors praise and crucify the biographical approach to literary analysis. Dickinson is
perhaps more mysterious than any other writer I have studied. Part of the mystery has been
created by analysts trying to decipher the meaning of poems written by a reclusive woman who
published little of her work while still alive. During her life, Dickinson was not famous. Her fame
and much of her profile has been created after her death. In an attempt to decipher her work,
several literary scholars have used a biographical approach to Emily Dickinson and her poetry. My

that, especially with Dickinson, it is overused. Wolff claims that while one cannot begin with only
a biographical approach to fully understand the complexity of Dickinson s poetry, a critical reader

Based on my research, Coles In Year 2016 (2016), Coles is committed to offering customers
everyday value, quality fresh produce and a better shopping experience. Essentially, it is vital that
the company run the business feasible as well as in a responsible way.
Based on the previous financial year 2016, Coles Supermarket made a total profit of +4.3%, food

growth of +11.1%.
The aim of this report is to examine and analyze the effectiveness of Cole s current management

A.Market Structure Coles operates in an oligopoly market structure. In the retail industry, two
mighty supermarkets, Coles and Woolworths, rule over most of the market. There are firms alike
that acquire powers of setting their price as there is a price differentiation when other supermarkets
take in different goods for the society. Barriers are certainly present in the market upon gauging in

5. The Spanish Culture In Mexico And The Culture Of Mexico
The culture of Mexico reflects the country s complex history and is the result of the gradual
blending of native culture with Spanish culture and other immigrant cultures. Mexico s culture
revolves around and is most prominent in music, food, and celebrations. The combination of beliefs
and customs creates the unique Mexican culture.
The overwhelming majority of Mexicans today speak Spanish. According to the CIA, Spanish is
spoken by 92.7 percent of the Mexican population. About 6 percent of the population speaks
Spanish as well as indigenous languages, such as Mayan, Nahuatl and other regional languages.
However, the Spanish spoken by Mexicans varies from the traditional Spanish the originated in
Spain. The religion of Mexico is predominantly catholic. Around 82 percent of Mexicans identify
themselves as Catholic, according to the CIA, although many have incorporated pre Hispanic
Mayan elements as part of their faith. There are also small communities of Muslims, Jews and
Buddhists.
In Mexico, fiestas occur frequently throughout the year as a custom. Mexicans gather on these
holidays to eat dance, take part in parades, and remember historic or religious events. Mexican
Independence Day celebrates the separation of the country from Spain on September 16, 1810.
Another famous celebration is Day of the Dead which is celebrated on the first of November.
Although it may sound scary, this celebration is a cheerful time of remembering friends and family
members who have died.

ABSTRACT The Department of Education points to K to 12 Enhanced Basic Education program to
address one of the main weaknesses of the Philippine educational system the congested curriculum.
Students are hardpressed to learn in 10 years a curriculum that is actually designed for 12 years in
other countries. Hence, Filipino students are not able to achieve comprehension and mastery,

There are several reasons why cooperative learning works well. The idea that students learn more by
doing something active than by simply watching and listening has long been known to both
cognitive psychologists and effective teachers (Bransford, et. al., 2000) and cooperative learning is
by its nature an active method. Beyond that, cooperation enhances learning in several ways. Weak
students working individually are likely to give up when they get stuck; working cooperatively,
they keep going. Strong students faced with the task of explaining and clarifying material to weaker
students often find gaps in their own understanding and fill them in. Students working alone may
tend to delay completing assignments or skip them altogether, but when they know that others are
counting on them, they are motivated to do the work in a timely manner. This study is an
opportunity to enhance the researcher s knowledge of cooperative learning and examine the effect
of cooperative learning groups in promoting a deeper understanding of the Grade 7 mathematics
curriculum. The students will be gradually switched from a direct instruction approach to a
cooperative learning environment. Groups will be formed based on past grades of students from
different ability levels working together. Many teachers, including those who teach mathematics,
are sure to benefit from this research.

7. Summary Of Symphony For The City Of The Dead
Author M.T. Anderson effectively captures the sentiment lived by the Russians in his book
Symphony for the City of the Dead when he tells the story of a young man, Dmitri Shostakovich,
who survived Joseph Stalin s deadly regime and Adolf Hitler s attack on his native city of
Leningrad. Throughout the story, Stalin finds new ways to subjugate his people by eliminating
anyone who contradicted his ideals. Then, the story takes a sinister path when the Germans attack
on Russiaduring World War II becomes inevitable.
The story begins when a Soviet agent gives an American agent a wooden box which contained a
microfilm with Shostakovich s seventh symphony inscribed in it. This box was taken across the
desserts of the Middle East and North Africa to Cairo, then flown to Brazil, and from there to the
United States (p. 2). The symphony would be played across the country and it would encourage
Americans to aid the Soviets in their attempt to defeat the Nazis.
Afterwards, Anderson goes back in time and reveals how the life of a genius, Shostakovich, was
affected by a series of war conflicts including a revolution and World War I
. Then, in October 1917,
he also witnessed the birth of a Communist Russia after Vladimir Lenin and the Bolsheviks seized
power. For a brief period, this new government supported and encouraged artists to develop their
talents. The city became a place where new art, new music, and new drama had to be found for a
new world where workers ruled (p. 37).

8. Galen Strawson On Moral Responsibility
Galen Strawson refutes the idea that we have free will and claims that we cannot be morally
responsible for our actions. According to his basic argument nothing can be the cause of itself
or causa sui, and in order for one to be morally responsible for their actions they have to be the
cause of one self. Therefore, since we are not causa sui we are not morally responsible for our
actions. He claims that we do not have free willbecause we do actions that have a reason behind
them and if a person acts for a reason they act that way because of how they are mentally. Thus, if
no one responsible for their mental state they are not responsible for the actions that occur. A
person has to be responsible for their self makeup to be morally responsible and since no one is
responsible for this they are not morally responsible for their actions.
Moral responsibility from my view is for someone to do something and later is held accountable for
their actions. To be morally responsible one must have the power or right to act or think as one
wants without restraint. Whether they use ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

him he has the free will to choose which fruit he wants to buy. Meaning that having options and
having the ability to choose one thing over indicates that we do have free will and therefore are
morally responsible for our actions. Adding on we also have the ability to resist or engage in
certain actions meaning we can say yes or no to certain things and that we aren t forced into
choosing whether yes or no. Just like having options we have the right to resist certain options and
engage in certain options. The person in the supermarket can say yes to apples and no to

the other hand, pay nothing to use the roads. Woods goes on to describe examples of how drivers
get charged for using the roads in other parts of the world and how it helps to reduce congestion
and encourage the use of public transit. Woods states that in Vancouver, the roads have been free
since the beginning of time. Consequentially, the public does not really comprehend the concept of
roadpricing let alone have any experience with it and without the proper education,

10. The Study of Dark Matter
Dark matter is a hypothesized form of matter particle that does not reflect or emit electromagnetic
radiation. The existence of dark matter is inferred from gravitational effects on visible matter, such
as stars and galaxies (Andrew Zimmerman Jones). Dark matter is crucial to the study of the
universe and the existence of the human race. Since either dark matteror dark energy have neither
been actually observed and all theories, we will be evaluating them from scientific standpoint.
Since most of the light in the universe is not seen or can be seen because of the existence of dark
matter, no one can really tell what exactly it is. This is why dark matter is the generic term used to
describe the part of the universe in which light is neither absorbed nor reflected. Through the
evaluated articles, we can deduce that the theory was first proposed by Astronomer Jon Oort in
1932 and further examined in 1933 by Fritz Zwicky. While studying, he made note of a large
portion of missing mass within the galaxy. Jan Oort was studying the matter in the galaxy and
noticed that there has to be more mass then that could be seen but figured that he made an error.
Astrophysicist Fritz Zwicky made a similar observation when using mathematical equations to
calculate the mass of the universe and noticed that there was evidence of invisible matter. Both men
basically theorized that there is something in the universe thats invisible and abundant that provided
enough gravity to hold

11. Loss Of Innocence In Tears By Harper Lee
Loss of innocence can be a sad and depressing moment for children and their family. Nowadays,
drugs and pregnancy are often a big sign of loss of innocence in a person, and can cause a person
to live a negative life. However, others react differently to their loss of innocence, and with the
right support someday they can be an influence in the world. The poem, Tears by Jason Yu
investigates the theme of loss of innocence through multiple symbols and similes. The image of
the two leaves is also a great example of loss of innocence, but the imagery and characterization
used by Harper Lee that shows Jem and Dill s loss of innocence is the most influential symbol in
this theme. In particular, Jason Yu and Harper Lee both use the same imagery and symbolization
to describe the loss of innocence in a child. Both authors use the idea of crying as a symbol of loss
of innocence. After the main characterwitnesses all the horrifying discrimination acts, Yu simply
states, She cries (Yu 2014). From this quote, we can conclude that by the end of her journey she
understood that segregation was immoral. As she realized the darker world around her it caused
her mass amounts of internal pain, causing her to cry. Yu said that she cries at the end of his poem
to symbolize the girl s loss of innocence after her... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

13. Mass Media And Co-Viewing Research
Mass media consumption is rarely in a social vacuum. Television and movies are often watched
with family and friends, books are passed along and discussed between friends, and newer media
naturally implement mediated conversations with people from across the world. Communication
scholars have known for a long time that the consumption of media is rarely an isolated
experience, and is instead typically social in nature (Katz Lazarsfeld, 1955) However, while many
of the foundational research in the field explored how media effects are intertwined with
interpersonal influences (e.g., two step flow; Katz, 1957), few current media effect researchers
incorporate the social aspects of media consumption into their studies. This is unfortunate as the
social factors such as co viewing can play a great role in attitude formation and emotional effects
(Nathanson, 2001, Tal Or, 2016).
One of the gaps in the co viewing literature is how individual differences and motivations might
play a role in enjoyment of entertainment. This study attempts to explore this gap by analyzing the
effects of two individual traits in tangent with individual uses of media have on how one may
conform to other s enjoyment expression and attitudes. More specifically, this study will explored
how tendency to conform and sociability are associated with using movies for either entertainment
or socializing, and how these motivations relate to group conformity.

The history of vaccination is something that both medical and public health students study as the

the name of Edward Jenner, an English physician and scientist, inoculated an 8 year old boy with
the pus drawn from the cowpox lesions of a dairy milkmaid (Green, 2015). The hypothesis at the
time was that since milkmaids had a lower incidence of small pox while still having lessor cases of
cowpox that the two were related. Researchers in Germany and England , through extensive testing,
had supported this hypothesis. Jenner though was the first to make widespread use of the

15. The impact of media s representation of ideal body size on...
(Posavac, Posavac Posavac, 1998). It has even been suggested that the Medias overwhelming
representation of thinness has a large contributing factor towards young women s attitudes of their
own body weight dissatisfaction (Jacobi Cash‚ 1994). This dissatisfaction stems from
discrepancies between the accepted standard of female body imagerepeatedly shown in today s
media and their own bodies leading to the formation of attitudes that their own weight is not

This finding suggests that by using average size models in advertising, it may protect some women
from developing body dissatisfaction and will help avoid worsening of any existing body image
concerns. Many campaigns have tried to address the detrimental effects that the medias consistent
endorsement of thinness has on women s self esteem, and the subsequent impact on mental health
and eating disorders. More specifically, a recent drive by the Government, in particular the
Equalities minister Jo Swinson, has encouraged the introduction of the use of plus size mannequins
and models by clothing retailers. It has been suggested that many women want to see more realistic
images of body shapes in magazines, TV and on the high street, and having models and mannequins
that portray that may promote healthier attitudes towards our own bodies among women,
increasing body confidence.
Previous research has highlighted the consequences of overrepresentation of thinness in the media
on attitudes about one s own body image, which in many cases leads to negative effects on mental
health and the development of eating disorders. This experiment is designed to investigate how
exposure to medias portrayal of ideal body size effects participants attitudes towards their own
body weight. The novel aspect of this research is that it will compare the effects of media images
of fashion on size zero mannequins that are currently

19. The Banning Of The Headscarf
In most countries around the world, it is not uncommon to see a woman in an article of clothing
that is representative of the Muslim faith and history. This type of dress is typically worn in
countries located in the Middle East. The wardrobe of a woman in these countries would contain
articles such as an al Amira, burka, or a hijab. Some women wear these clothing items for
religious or traditional purposes, but others wear them solely by choice. However, there are
certain countries around the world that oppose the wearing of certain Muslim style clothing. One
country in particular, Turkey, does not issue total support of the wearing of headscarves for
women. In fact, the government has issued a ban on the wearing of headscarves by women in
government facilitated places. The banning of the headscarf is a heavily debated subject in Turkey
due to political and social beliefs of the Turkish people. Since the ban was put into existence, the
Turkish people, specifically women, have felt the negative effects that have resulted from it. The
headscarf is an item of clothing that is worn by Turkish women for several reasons, not solely for
religious practices. The scarf has a deep history behind it, stemming from the Ottoman influence on
the Middle East. Since the beginning of the headscarf wearing, the framework of the headscarf has

21. Theme Of Ode On A Grecian Urn By John Keats
Life s mysteries are best stated in writing. Some mysteries are revealed, while others remain
unknown forever. John Keats, one of England s greatest poets, published several poems, including
one of his most famous ones in 1819, Ode on A Grecian Urn (Keats 247). Keats was a renowned
poet during the British Romantic period. Romantic literature focused on beauty and emotions. So,
what is the significance of the scenes depicted on the mysterious urn? Is the urn simply a
masterpiece of art with emphasis only on physical beauty? In the poem, Ode on A Grecian Urn,
John Keatscreates mysterious scenes on a Greek urn to contrast between everlasting art and human
life. Keats contrasts both worlds through the urn s elaborate description, the theme of personal
relationships, and the ultimate message of beauty, with significant relevance to modern times.
The poems ambiguities begin with the speaker describing the urn. However, these ambiguities
are not just intended by Keats to remain enigmatic, they are there to be connected like a puzzle,
piece by piece. As the speaker, who is a mystery himself, describes the urn, it is evident that he is
bewildered with a spark of curiosity, attempting to grasp the meaning of the scenes (Mishra 51).
The speaker first states what he sees from a distance. He describes the distinct advantages of the
urn as an object, Thou still unravished bride of quietness...foster child of silence and slow time
(Keats 247). He defines the world of art as

He illiterates this claim by a thought experiment involving torture. In this hypothetical Williams
tells individuals that they will be tortured at noon the following day. Naturally everyone feels
uneasy about this. In order to easy this feeling, Williams tells those waiting to be tortured that
before noon the individual s entire memory will be erased. Williams argues that if memory is
necessary for personal identity, this news should put any feelings of uneasiness to rest. When
asked, the individual still reports feeling uneasy about the torture. Williams repeats this process
altering the scenario from amnesia to exchanging the memories of the individual who will be
torured for those of another. Again when prompted the individual still feels uneasy about the
torture. Williams claims that this is proof of the body being just as necessary as the memories.
However, this is not a fair analysis of the situation. When the individual is told of their torture as a
matter of fact, it is a natural reaction to feel uneasy. This is similar to feeling anxious about a
public speaking event that unexpectedly gets canceled right before taking the stage. There will
remain a sense of anxiety until the event causing that feeling is gone. Likewise, the feeling of
unrest will remain present until the moment of memory loss. This therefore fails as an example to
increase the importance of the body in regards to

How society is observed as it transmits to air travel has a great deal to do with September 11,
2001. As a result of this tragic event, the judgments of the world have become increasingly
profound to the background of passengers traveling on planes. It has shaped something of a
undesirable perception for particular cultures and beliefs. This discourages people to travel with
other passengers or airline, directly affects the airline industry (Reilly.N.J, 2010) 2.4 Technological
Technological developments have both created new opportunities as well as threats for the aviation
industry. Development in information and communication technologies has enabled strong
communication and has consequently provided customers with an alternative for frequent
travelling, for example; Qantas Frequent Flyer programs. Airlines are now able to expand their
outreach directly to consumers through e commerce. For example, airlines like Qantas are able to
introduce ticketless travel through the use of technology (Thompson and Gamble, 2012). 2.5 Legal
The implementation of the carbon tax had a negative affect on the aviation industry, as the airlines
could not absorb the higher cost of fuel. This meant to offset costs travelers would pay extra in
ticket prices (Herald, 2011). Some governments provide subsidies that provide an unfair advantage
and prices lower than market conditions which affects the functioning of airline industries directly

this brought nationalism towards manufacturer in the northeast states of the U.S because it

To form a corporation with limited liability, there are no restrictions on the number of members
who can be involved. One member can start the business and investors can become members after

what was originally invested. In addition, if an individual decides to dissolve the affiliation, the
transfer of ownership is not difficult because the member only needs to sell his or her stock.
However, the disadvantages are not too severe that one would shy away from the thought of
forming a small business. The circumstance that one should use to form a limited liability
partnership is the individual must be a licensed professional, such as dentist, doctor, accountant, or

consider when making a choice on which structure is better than the other, are financial protection
as well as taxes. The number of potential members or partners is another deciding factor on which
structure is the best choice. Conclusion LLCs and LLPs are business structures which are most

display the feelings of African Americans. Dunbar said that he wanted to interpret my own people
through song and story and prove to the many that we are more human than African (Baym and
Levine). In his poems We Wear the Mask and Sympathy , Dunbar skillfully revealed the discontent
of blacks facing unjust treatment by using metaphor and imagery. The author extracted from his

Throughout both poems, the author paints pictures to help the reader visualize the social
captivity of African Americans. The fourth line of We Wear the Mask reads, With torn and
bleeding hearts we smile (Dunbar). Dunbar creates a mental image in the reader s mind of
someone with a ripped open and bleeding chest that grits their teeth and smiles through the pain.
This would obviously be an excruciating situation. The writer uses such a vivid description to
expose how agonizing the condition truly was for African Americans in the late 19th century,
yet, they hid their suffering from others. If Dunbar s imagery in We Wear the Mask appears
flamboyant, it is even more so in Sympathy . The author constructs a beautiful depiction of
nature in the first stanza by using the phrases sun is bright , wind stirs soft , springing grass ,
stream of glass , first bird sings , first bud opes , and faint perfume (Dunbar). Although this seems
like a pleasant illustration, the first and last lines of the stanza help the reader see that it is not
enjoyable from the outside looking in. The caged bird can only watch others enjoy this stunning
scenery while he is trapped and cannot encounter it himself, just as African Americans observed
whites that had the freedom to enjoy the luxuries of America but could not partake in these
indulgences themselves. The imagery of the second stanza is more gruesome than the first.
Dunbar uses the phrases beats his wing , blood is red , cruel bars , pain still throbs , old scars ,
and keener sting to help the reader imagine a physical representation of the emotional misery of
black Americans due to the Jim Crow laws. Although the oppression African Americans confronted
was more emotional than physical, Dunbar s use of imagery helps the reader understand their
suffering in a tangible

identified the multitude of fossils as a primitive human. This revolutionary discovery has added an
ancestor to our evolutionary tree. This specie, named naledi, has been classified into the genus,
Homo, which includes modern humans. However, due to lack of information, this specie is thought
to have three possible ages of existence. One, an early divergence of the specie Australopithecus
anamensis,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the other hand, its skull shows progressive shape, small teeth, long legs, and modern human
looking feet. The new specie was discovered in a chamber of the Rising Star cave, 30 meters
underground, in a burial site. The fossils were found unharmed and the environment had no sign
of a calamity. This leads scientists to believe that these early humans had intentionally taken
thought into the burial of their dead. Until the moment of discovery of naledi, I would have
probably said to you that it was our defining character. The idea of burial of the dead or ritualized
body disposal is something utterly uniquely human, says Berger. This idea of another people
intentionally burying its dead has left many scientists to question human identity. After all, if this
specie was found after many years proving it has been involved in burial rituals before, what
others may we find in the future. It absolutely questions what makes us human. And I don t think
we know anymore what does, Berger states. In other words, how many more secrets are out there .

45. Garibaldi Unification Essay
The background on Risorgimento and Giuseppi Garibaldi s role in the unification of Italy sparked
my curiosity about the impact unification had on national and regional identities in Italy, and the
effect these identities have on the way the world perceives the people of Italy as opposed to the
way they see each other. It seems to me that Garibaldi and the unification process must have had a
profound effect on the people of Italyand the way they see themselves fitting into the nationstate as
a whole. I would imagine that many of these questions do not have clear answers, but rather
complicated explanations that lead to even more questioning. With Garibaldi s movement spreading
across the regions of Italy, I can imagine that not all... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another interesting way of looking at Italian identities from an international perspective is
examining the way other nations see Italy as having either distinct regional differences or a
larger collective identity. If there are so many different regional identities, where did the Italian
identity known in the United States come from? If each region has their own culture, how can
we claim to know Italian food, music, art, or any other cultural element? I would imagine that
much of the food in an area of Italy is dependent on what is produced in that region of the nation,
and therefore could not be encompassed by the umbrella of Italian food. I know that many Italian
foods are named after the region where they are produced, such as parmigiano and Marsala wine,
thus preserving some of the regional identity in the name. So where did this larger culture come
from, is what we know as Italian food really the food from a specific region or something else
entirely?
It would be interesting to study how this national identity emerged over time, and does its presence
mean that some people no longer care about their regional loyalty? I would expect that as
generations become further and further removed from the time before unification, more and more
people would identify more with Italy on a national scale rather than their specific regions. Yet, in
many places regional pride and

Many people may benefits from a balanced vitamin and mineral supplement, including those who
have irregular eating habits, skip meals, or eat large amounts of processed and refined foods.
There are also certain groups of people who are at particular risk of nutrient deficiencies because
of other lifestyle, environmental or disease factors. Some people see supplements as health
insurance and some take them for what they see as their specific benefits. For example, vitamin C
for colds. However, it is important to select your vitamins based upon what you really need. The
amount of vitamin you take should be based upon your own requirements. Proper dosageis very
important since a program designed for health maintenance differs from one designed to overcome
a specific disorder. All vitamin supplements work best when taken in combination with food (Sy
2002). Even if you take a vitamin supplement, you still need to have a balance healthy diet because
there are still beneficial chemicals needed by the body that can be gain from the food we eat (Reyes

Quirino (2002) says Supplements cannot meet all body s nutritional requirements. You can

54. Video Game Consoles Evolution
Did video game consoles gradually evolve over time, or was it an abrupt evolution? Currently
there are only three companies producing home video game consoles, which are Nintendo, Sony,
and Microsoft and they had to fight to get to where they are. Is there a certain formula a company
must follow to become successful in this business or were they just lucky? This paper will look at
the evolution of home video gameconsoles over time, starting with the first home video game
consolein the 1970s to current day consoles. I surmise that there are certain characteristics that
companies with successful video game consoles have over others. I also surmise that because of

With my null hypothesis being, there will be no correlation between the year a video game
console is released. and others with similar release dates. My second hypothesis is, if a company is
to succeed in building video game consoles, then each of these company s consoles will have
similar traits. With a my null hypothesis being, there will be no correlation between the traits of
failed companies video game consoles, and that of companies with successful video game consoles.
The meteoric rise of video gaming has created a phenomenon that does not appear to be stopping
any time soon. A brief history of home video game consoles is a must when it comes to
understanding them. There are currently 3 companies manufacturing video game consoles. This
study will utilize phylogenetics to test the evolutionary validity over time of video game consoles
Just as biologists use phylogenetic methods to reconstruct evolutionary relationships between
species, in recent years several groups of cultural evolution researches have shown that phylogenetic
methods can also be usefully applied to cultural phenomena to reconstruct evolutionary relationships
between different culturally transmitted artifacts, behavioral practices, and languages.

55. Music Is All Around Us
Music is all around us. At the start of the 21st century, technology in industrialised societies
provides us with easy access to a vast amount of recorded music. We can listen to our favourite
music at home, in the car, on the train; on home stereos, personal stereos, and through our
computers. We are also often surrounded by musicwhich we have not chosen, at the shops, waiting
for a train, even at the doctor s.
Research is beginning to show how music has the power to change the way we feel, think, and
behave. We know that music can lift our mood, and certain kinds of music can temporarily boost
specific kinds of intelligence. Listening to our favourite music can even help us tolerate high levels
of pain.
What do we know about how young children engage with music? There has been quite a lot of
research looking at the very early years. We know that babies can remember music from even
before birth. My own study with the Child of Our Time group in 2001 showed that exposure to a
particular piece of music before birth had long lasting effects, as the babies seemed to prefer
listening to that music up to 15 months after birth. Other studies have explored the features of
maternal singing, showing how this can make the baby feel calm.
There are also studies of babies responses to music in the lab that show them to be really very
sophisticated listeners. In their first year, babies can notice all kinds of small differences in musical
sequences, and are even better than

Nursing is an art, and if it is to be made an art, requires as exclusive a devotion, as hard a
preparation, as any painter s or sculptor s work... (Nightingale, 1868)
In today s health care system, quality and safety are one in the same when it comes to patient
care. As Florence Nightingale described our profession long ago, it takes work and vigilance to
ensure we are doing the best we can to care for our patients. (Mitchell, 2008)
The World Health Organization outlines 6 areas of quality that help shape our definition of what
makes quality care. Those areas are; (1) Effective: using evidence bases practice to improve health
outcomes based on needs of individuals and communities. (2) Efficient: healthcare that maximizes

On a daily basis there is a lot of thought and focus directed at these patients to assure they are
getting quality medical care; you may have caught a medication error, made multiple phone calls,
waited on hold for what seems like forever, waited on doctors, ran to another floor all to get a
patient something they needed or wanted, or may the nurse noticed an important change in the
patients status that could dramatically affect their outcome. Most times the patient does not see or
not even know about these behind the scenes battles to ensure quality care. Conversely, most often,
especially when considering a patient in the hospital setting, our perception is our reality. Patients
often do not know the ins and outs of procedure and protocol and rely solely on their perception
of the care they are receiving. Studies have shown that patients desire to be perceived and cared
for as individuals. Lying in that bed waiting on a nurse for 20 minutes for pain medication may just
translate into lack of care on the nurses part to the patient but in reality the nurse was caught in
another room with a different patient with a situation he or she couldn t walk away from. Often
nurses are stressed which can also convey a certain harshness to patients. In other cases maybe the
job has become so repetitive that the nurse
