We don’t always spend enough time thinking about the risks associated with how we’re using open source projects. For example, if we build our business or products on top of an open source technology, we probably want to reduce our risk. On the other hand, if we are using an open source project as part of some non-critical part of our infrastructure, we can accept more risk. This talk will: * Compare the risk between projects under neutral foundations vs. those owned by individual companies. * Provide details about how governance impacts risk for leadership selection, decision-making processes, and communication. * Evaluate business risk in terms of contributors and organizations to determine the level of risk associated with individuals or organizations leaving the project. * Discuss how certain behaviors within the community can increase or decrease the risk of using and contributing to a project. The goal of this talk is to provide some resources to help everyone feel included and welcome as a conference speaker. Open source conferences are always striving to increase the diversity of their speakers by recruiting new speakers and encouraging people from underrepresented groups to submit talks. But how do you decide what topic to cover? What can you do to help your topic stand out? How do you prevent imposter syndrome from getting in the way of your success as a speaker? You do not need to be the world’s leading expert on a topic to give a presentation. You just need to know a few things that can help other people learn enough about the topic to get started. By bringing your authentic voice and unique perspective to the topic, people will walk away from your talk with new insights that they wouldn’t get from another speaker. This talk will cover: Selecting a topic and a conference for your topic. Writing a title and abstract that will increase the chances of your talk being accepted. The importance of your bio during the talk selection process. Tips for writing and preparing your presentation. The audience will walk away with practical advice about writing and submitting talk proposals along with some tips for delivering a successful presentation.

Presented at All Things Open 2022 Presented by Dawn Foster Title: GitHub API 101 with Python and Jupyter Notebooks Abstract: The GitHub APIs are powerful tools for accessing data about your open source projects, and they are easier to use than many people realize. While you can perform data analysis that requires advanced skills, you can also gather some very useful information quickly and easily with just a bit of knowledge about the API and some basic Python programming skills. The talk assumes that audience members have already installed and used Jupyter Notebooks and Python. Since this is an introductory 101 talk, the focus will be on the GitHub REST API (v3), but the GraphQL API (v4) will also be discussed. This talk will use Jupyter Notebooks and Python to cover: * Getting started: documentation, authentication, personal access tokens, and ethical use * Demo: gathering data about users (employer, email, orgs, bio, type, …) * Demo: getting data about organizations (description, creation date, … * Demo: accessing data about repositories (last updated, open issues / PRs, license, …) * Pros and cons of using the REST API and the GraphQL API with a simple GraphQL demo. Building a community around your company’s open source project is no easy task, and there is no magic bullet or one size fits all solution. A few of the dos and don’ts covered in this talk include: * Planning and product management: Do use a transparent process in the open with tools that allow anyone to participate. Don’t inadvertently set the expectation that employees will be the ones always answering questions and making decisions. * Be honest: Do be honest with yourselves about where and how you prefer to have community members contribute. Dawn Foster, Guido Conaldi, Riccardo De Vita University of Greenwich Centre for Business Network Analysis http://www.gre.ac.uk/business/research/centres/cbna/home Presented at the Third European Conference on Social Networks (EUSN) Mainz, Germany on 27 September 2017 This study investigates collaboration in an open source software community using proximity theory as the theoretical lens with social network analysis and modeling of activities over time to predict collaboration. Actors in this study are part of the Linux kernel community where they collaborate on one or more sub-projects using mailing lists as the primary method of collaboration. Collaboration occurs in real-time between actors that contribute to multiple sub-projects, work for firms that pay them to contribute to the Linux kernel, and are working virtually from locations across the globe. This complex setting can be better understood by using several dimensions of proximity: organizational, cognitive, institutional, social, and geographical. Collaboration is analysed using data from source code contributions and mailing list participation. Open source software is developed in the open where anyone can view the source code and anyone with the knowledge to do so can contribute to the project. With no central group responsible for coordination of tasks, collaboration on the development of this software is emergent. Because people from around the world work on these projects together using online tools with publicly accessible interactions between people, it is a relevant setting for using social network analysis to understand and model network relationships.

Are you wondering why everyone is talking about the Flutterwave scandal? You’re not alone! It’s been in the news a lot. We’re going to tell you all about the Flutterwave Scandal in a way that’s easy to get. Keep reading, because we’re going to share the whole story with you. The company Flutterwave is headquartered in San Francisco, California, United States. In 2016, Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, Olugbenga Agboola, and Adeleke Adekoya established Flutterwave. It offers a payment infrastructure to international merchants and payment service providers throughout Africa. The company operates in various African countries including Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, South Africa, and others. They focus on digital payments, helping businesses accept and process payments on various channels like the web, mobile, ATM, and POS. Recently, they’ve been in the news due to allegations of misconduct within the company, which has affected their reputation and value. Flutterwave is an essential player in the African fintech landscape, aiming to drive growth for banks and businesses through digital payment solutions. The Flutterwave scandal involves allegations of misconduct and inappropriate behaviour towards female employees by the company’s co-founder and CEO, Olugbenga Agboola. Reports have surfaced from both current and former employees about bullying, intimidation, and sexual harassment at work. The allegations of inappropriate behaviour towards female employees at Flutterwave, specifically involving the CEO Olugbenga Agboola, were brought to public attention in April 2022.This was when Clara Wanjiku Odero, an ex-employee and current CEO of Credrails, published a Medium post and a series of tweets on April 4, 2022, accusing Flutterwave and Agboola of bullying. These allegations were part of a broader range of misconduct claims that surfaced around the same time The reasons behind the scandal are rooted in accusations of unethical behavior within the company. The allegations suggest a workplace culture that allowed for misconduct and failed to protect employees from harassment and intimidation. Specifically, the Flutterwave scandal refers to the series of events where the CEO was accused of engaging in improper conduct with female colleagues. This led to a broader investigation into the company’s practices and raised serious concerns about the fintech’s corporate governance. The scandal had significant repercussions, including a drop in the company’s stock price and a loss of trust among customers and partners. The trust that customers and investors had in Flutterwave was greatly damaged. People started to doubt the company’s integrity and whether their money and personal information were safe. Syngulon’s technology expands the capacity for selection of microorganisms. The ability to select individual microbes with a behavior of interest is essential, whether for simple cloning at the bench, or for industry-scale production. Synthetic biology uses the concept of “bioengineering” to improve or modify existing genetic systems to create microbes with desired behaviors, and Syngulon uses this approach to develop its selection technologies. This selection technology is based on bacteriocins, ribosomally-produced peptides naturally made by most bacteria to kill competitive microbial species. These bacteriocins can have a limited or wide target range against other microbial species. This technology offers advantageous over antibiotic selection for several reasons: it avoids the use of antibiotics in the first place, helping to reduce the spread of antibiotic resistant microbes. The technology also increases product yield; as bacteriocins are generally smaller peptides, they do not impose a heavy metabolic burden on the producing cell. They can have a wide target specificity, helping to avoid genetic drift. Finally, our system is 100% plasmid-based (e.g. without chromosomal mutations), making it applicable for use in any E. coli strains.
