Open source Apache Hadoop is a great framework for distributed processing of large data sets. But there’s a difference between “playing” with big data versus solving real problems. The reality is that Hadoop alone is not enough. In fact, almost every organization that plans to use Hadoop for production use quickly discovers that it lacks the required features for enterprise use. And, fewer still have the Hadoop specialists on hand to navigate through the complexity to build reliable, robust applications. As a result, many Hadoop projects never make it to production as executives say, “we just don’t have the skills.” In this session, we will discuss these enterprise capabilities and why they’re important: analytics, visualization, security, enterprise integration, developer/admin tools, and more. Additionally, we will share several real-world client examples who have found it necessary to use an enterprise-grade Hadoop platform to tackle some of the most interesting and challenging business problems.

Webinar: Designing a schema for a Data WarehouseFederico Razzoli
Are you new to data warehouses (DWH)? Do you need to check whether your data warehouse follows the best practices for a good design? In both cases, this webinar is for you.
A data warehouse is a central relational database that contains all measurements about a business or an organisation. This data comes from a variety of heterogeneous data sources, which includes databases of any type that back the applications used by the company, data files exported by some applications, or APIs provided by internal or external services.
But designing a data warehouse correctly is a hard task, which requires gathering information about the business processes that need to be analysed in the first place. These processes must be translated into so-called star schemas, which means, denormalised databases where each table represents a dimension or facts.
We will discuss these topics:
- How to gather information about a business;
- Understanding dictionaries and how to identify business entities;
- Dimensions and facts;
- Setting a table granularity;
- Types of facts;
- Types of dimensions;
- Snowflakes and how to avoid them;
- Expanding existing dimensions and facts.

3. In this session we will look at…

• What makes IBM i so special in todays modern compute environment.
• How it’s being used to drive competitive advantage.
• We will look at how it compares to other technologies/platforms.
• Squash some of the B.S. claims slung around by people who chase
dollars instead of efficiency.
• Look at how Power Systems & IBM i together provide the best
landscape for business critical applications.
• How IBM i is empowering our demanding line of business
counterparts on the front lines.
• How to move IBM i technology from surviving to thriving.
• Why IBM i is the better choice for business critical workloads.
5. Our Mission…
6/14/2018 6
We need to efficiently use technology to …
Help people Help the business
Deliver value to
the markets they
serve.
Technology is just a tool to help serve that mission…
6. Let’s keep it simple/stupid…
6/14/2018 7
Servers, operating systems, & applications manufacture &
distribute data.
Simple RIGHT?
If that’s true, we can more simply understand computation &
better approach the optimization of it.

15. Impact…
6/14/2018 19
These machines have had a massive impact
on the people that interacted with them.
It becomes part of their identity.
IBM i has roots going back to the System/34
and has been influenced by every iteration
since then.
16. Influence…
6/14/2018 20
But… their future is depicted by how they
use the past to optimize the future.
Just like people are influenced by their
parents, childhood, and life experiences
17. 6/14/2018 21
NOT the AS/400, iSeries, or System i.
It’s the culmination of experiences and how
some of the greatest brains in computer
science reacted to them.
20. 6/14/2018 24
From my experience….
The biggest limiting factor in the wide
spread adoption of IBM i for business critical
workloads is the people who own them.
IBM i is a modern & innovative platform for
business compute but much of it’s aging
workforce has lost it’s passion for
innovation.

Estimated three-year costs of ownership for the three
platforms were calculated based on costs of…
• Hardware acquisition and maintenance;
• License and support for operating systems, databases,
and other systems software
• Personnel for system and database administration
• Facilities (primarily energy).
• Hardware, maintenance, and software license and
support costs are based on discounted prices reported by
