Gary Soto Research Paper
Gary Soto: A Man of Inspiration By: Josie Estrella Freeman, Bloque Tres, el seis de octubre
It appears these days I don t have much of a life because my nose is often stuck in a book. But I
discovered that reading builds a life inside the mind. Gary Soto. This man has dedicated his life to
reading, writing, and promoting young readers. He is a renowned poet and author for both children
and adults. Soto is very successful at what he does, and he has won many awards to prove that. But
most of all, Gary Soto s biggest accomplishment is inspiring others. Even though I write a lot about
life in the barrio, I am really writing about the feelings and experiences of most American kids. Gary
Soto was born on April 12, 1952 in Fresno, California. He grew up in a barrio , a poor Mexican
American neighborhood. He uses his experiences to write and provoke young readers interests.
Although, Soto s actions while growing up may come as a shock. His father, Manuel Soto, died in a
factory accident while working for Sunmaid. His family was already ... Show more content on

These include Ernest Hemingway, Edward Field, Pablo Neruda, and Philip Levine. These specific
authors/poets sparked his interest because they all similar in one way: each of them wrote about the
common struggle. Soto loved this because he could relate and utilize his past experiences to his
advantage when writing. This is an example of what he expresses in Buried Onions: The black asphalt
would shimmer with vapors. I had a theory about those vapors...not released by the sun but by a huge
onion buried under the city. This onion made us cry...I thought about this giant onion, that remarkable
bulb of sadness. Many are astonished by Gary Soto s remarkable memory. Some believed it to be
photographic. This is how he responds: These are the pictures I take with me when I write. They stir
up the past, the memories are so

Black And White By Lila Quintero Weaver
We are all born equal is a concept that was not widely known in Souther America during the 1960s.
Some accepted the multitude of races while many did not. In Darkroom: a Memoir in Black White by
Lila Quintero Weaver she depicts from the eyes of an outsider of what truly happened during this
trying time between races. Weaver and her family had no idea of the history that was about to be made
when they arrived back in the United States. While in Argentina her family was seen as different they
were not treated as poorly as the blacks in America. Throughout the novel Weaver chooses to use
black and white images to depict how she saw the world in the time during the Civil Rights movement
for many reasons but some that stand out was the lack of perspective, the choice of racism based on
skin color, and because of what she grew up loving, her fathers pictures. By the time Weaver and her
family had arrived slavery was a thing of the past but the ideas of the social standards of blacks had
still not left the minds of white southern Americans. Children are not born racist and never will be the,
selfishness of the parents and their beliefs is what causes the outrageous comments and actions to
continue between generations. Blacks being forced to sit in the back at movies (Weaver 72), Blacks
refusing to join in on White s affairs even when asked (Weaver 74 75), not being allowed to dine
together (Weaver 106), and vulgar language that should never be repeated are just a few

Seminar Abstract Open Refine, earlier known as Google Refine, is a desktop application to refine the
messy data and also convert it into desired format using the GREL Google Refine Expression

Greek Philosopher Xenophanes
Xenophanes was a Greek philosopher before the Socratic era whose conception of God was different
from other philosophers of his time. Before the evolution of God as a non human entity the ancient
Greeks believed that Gods and Goddesses were similar to that of humans and the only distinction was
that Gods were immortal and humans were mortal. He challenged openly the concept of divinity
proposed by Homer and put forward his ideas of God through his poetic approach. He noticed the
corrupt behavior of humans and realized that if human are going to worship any being it must be
worthy of such an honor. He argued that ancient Greek Gods of Olympia had experienced downfall
similar to humans and thus are not worthy of being worshipped.
Xenophanes declared the idea of unity of God. This notion was very unusual for Greek culture and
society. He suggested that different poets and writers have induced the idea of multiple Gods in the
minds of Greeks. But the character of these Gods was against the very idea of a divine entity.
Xenophanes attacked the Greek mythology of his time by defining the unexplained deepness of nature
of divinity. He declined to accept the idea that Gods were just like human, they were born, required
cloths and are dependant on their body.
Discussion
There were two angles from which Xenophanes viewed God. One is that Homeric Gods showed
behaviors that were quite similar to the behaviors of humans. As per the definition, God had to be
someone much greater than

What Is The Impact Of Bombing On Germany
The technological developments that assisted bombing, the impact of bombing on the German
economy, the impact of bombing on the German civilian morale and also the effects on the German
war effort all help explain why the Allied strategic bombing of Germany during the Second World War
was significant to quite a far extent. Each of the following paragraphs will analyse the impacts of the
Allied strategic bombing on different aspects of Germany and also what factors assisted the Allied
bombing campaign in creating a significant impact on Germany during the Second World War. The
technological developments during the campaign affected the significance of the bombing of Germany

The attacks on Hamburg were not a turning point of the war as Bomber Command s fortunes had
completely disappeared once they started targeting Berlin, where their loss rates peaked to
unacceptably high levels. Therefore Gee made less of an impact in assisting the Allied strategic
bombing of Germany compared to Window. However the impact on Hamburg caused by Window was
relatively short lived because the Germans countered. On the other hand the long range escort fighters,
disposable fuel tanks and The Thousand Bomber raids had a long lived impact. The P 51 Mustang was
an important aircraft in the war that had an American airframe and a British Rolls Royce Merlin
Engine. Disposable fuel tanks, which increased the Allied fighter s range were loaded onto the P 51
Mustang and by March 1944, the modified Mustang had a 1800 mile armed range and could fly with
the bombers to Berlin and back. Richard Ovary said The long range escort fighter transformed the air
war overnight. Lastly the thousand bomber raid on 30th to 31st May 1942 against Cologne saw the
destruction of a third of the inner zone of Cologne along with the destroying of 20000 houses and the
evacuation of 200000 people.

Analysis Of The Seventh Man
The seventh man should forgive himself for his failure to save K. s life. In the novel the seventh man ,
the seventh man is a child during a typhoon. He and his best friend ,K., go down to the water during
the eye of the storm to investigate the shoreline. When they reached the beach, there were lots of
unfamiliar and fascinating items washed up on the shore. The boys were so focused on the treasures
that, consequently, they did not notice the waves creeping up the shore. Our narrator, the seventh man,
noticed a huge wave moving quickly and maliciously in from the horizon. As he runs to shelter behind
the breakwall, he yells for K. to run away from the water. However, K. is still entranced by the debris
at the shoreline and doesn t hear him. The seventh man knows that he should go back for K., but he is
transfixed by the horror of it all and only springs into action to run behind the breakwall. K. finally
realizes what is going on and tries to run away; but, it is too late. K. is sucked away from the beach in
a thunderous torrent of water. In the next wave that attacks the shoreline, the seventh man sees K. s
body; grinning horrendously and wickedly at him. He is traumatized and feels responsible about K. s
death until the day he finally learns to forgive himself. He spends many long years being tortured by
his guilt at K. s death. He needed to let go of the pain that he carried for all those long and terrible
years. Maybe he could have saved K., maybe he couldn t have; but

Hubble helped determine the age of the universe and the way galaxies are formed. Revealed
extraordinary detail about the process by which sun like stars end their lives as planetary nebulae. The
telescope allows to study the universe across a wide swath of the light spectrum structure of the
universe and map the distribution of elements fundamental to life. Astronomers believe they formed
the most distant objects with Hubble with a Distance of 13.2 billion years away. According to
nbcnews.com, Scientist Labb`e stated that previous searches have found 47 galaxies at an adequately
later time, when the universe was about 650 millions years old. Hubble has also discovered dark
matter. Dark matter is invisible, but reveals its existence via gravity, makes up roughly 23% of the
universe. The telescope made it easier to understand how Dark Matter behaves and could help scientist
figure out more detail about dark matter. Hubble has greatly expanded astronomers knowledge of the
Universe. Before the telescope, distance to far off galaxies were not well known. Hubble s millionth

Famine Affluence And Morality By Peter Singer
41 million people struggle with hunger in the United States, including 13 million children. Even in the
world s greatest food producing nation, children and adults face poverty and hunger in every state
across the U.S.. It is a black plague that twists itself around the American people scattered all over the
country. Because poverty is a huge regularity shared and ignored, should the people be responsible for
the removal of hunger and poverty in the United States of America? Should the American people
ignore the brethren who fall because of this disease? Should the American people live on without
feeding half the nation s population? Primarily, Famine, Affluence, and Morality is an essay written by
Peter Singer in 1971 and published in Philosophy and Public Affairs in 1972. In his essay, Singer
reaches out to the worried and interested audience population about the lack of food, shelter, and
medicine. Singer emphasizes the importance of moral obligation. If it is in the power of a human
being to achieve something for the good of the whole, or rather, to prevent something bad from
occurring without sacrificing anything of comparable moral importance, then it should be done. All in

If an intervening mass can align perfectly with a background source then it will bend the light creating
a ring of light around the object. This is known as Einstein s ring and depending on the mass of the
object will determine the size of the ring, a larger mass results in a larger ring. (Richmond, 2015)
Our universe is 85% dark matter, dark matter may be invisible but it still has mass and therefore when
light travels towards it, it will bend around them matter causing gravitational lensing. All objects can
bend light but usually the change is not measurable on smaller objects such as humans, for any
substantial bend to occur it would take a huge mass and a light ray to travel extremely close to the
matter. When the light bends it can alters the shape of the image, with a galaxy for example it can
bend or warp the shape which is normally elliptical or spiral looking. (Grocutt, 2015)
An accretion disk is formed when rocks, gasses and other satellites travel close to a black hole; they
are sucked into the gravitational field (StrongGravity, 2013). A black hole is a place in space where the
gravitational field is so great that not even light can escape it. This is because matter has been
compressed into such a confined space; this can occur when a star is dying for example (Smith, 2008).
Once trapped in the gravitational field the rocks and

If you have arthritis, then it is best for you to follow the treatment plan that your physician
recommends. However, you may also want to talk to your physician about adding supplements to your
regimen. There are a number of supplements that can help treat arthritis. Below is a list of some of
those supplements:
Fish Oil
Fish oil works by blocking prostaglandins and cytokines, which are two substances that promote
inflammation inside of the body. Fish oil also has anti inflammatory properties. Studies have shown
that arthritis patients who have taken this supplement have experienced less joint stiffness and
inflammation.
Ginger
Ginger is great for alleviating pain because it can help reduce inflammation. In fact, studies have

Machiavelli And Socrates
Although both are considered some of the greatest political and philosophical thinkers of their
respective times, Socrates and Niccoló Machiavelli had very different methods and beliefs of how a
political system should be run. The mindset of Socrates can be seen in the works Apology and Crito
by Plato. Socrates, who values wisdom and justice over power and prestige, would view Machiavelli s
concept of a Prince very contradicting to how he believes a good life should be lived. In his work, The
Prince, Machiavelli details how a prince should rule and maintain power. Socrates would not be
supportive of Machiavelli and his Prince s political system because it is rooted in unethical behaviors.
Machiavelli views these actions as virtues ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To Machiavelli, the true virtues of a prince should be stinginess, cruelty, and manipulation. He takes
traditional Christian virtues, which most see as good, and criticizes them, saying they are vices and
hurtful to a prince.
Socrates ideal Prince is much different than that of Machiavelli. Socrates found great power in his
analysis of Athens, rather than direct involvement. Through questioning, reason, and critical analysis
he attempts to instill wisdom, truth and virtue in Athens, specifically in the youth. He was charged
with corrupting the youth because his idea of how life should be lived was much different than that of
the states. Socrates corrupted the youth of Athens because he degenerated or undeveloped them from
becoming strong political, economic, and military leaders. The people of Athens, in particular the
wealthy and powerful, wanted their children to be educated in ideals that Machiavelli would support.
It was the job for these privileged youth to learn how to be strong leaders so the city could run
smoothly in the future and Socrates was undermining this structure. If the youth Socrates was teaching
were treated as a counterpart to Machiavelli s Prince, a difference in ideals and teachings can be
found. Machiavelli teaches his Prince how to maintain power at all costs, while Socrates teaches his
students to put aside the concept of materialistic power such as wealth and

The Potential Life Threatening Effects On Septic Shock
INTRODUCTION This clinical report will be discussing the potential life threatening effects from
cellulitis to septic shock . Cellulitis is the starting cause of an infection that will lead through the
sepsis cycle, finishing with the severe part septic shock (Swartz, 2004). Analysation of the
interrelationships between localised infection, systemic inflammation response syndrome (SIRS), and
the sepsis course will be discussed throughout this report. Additionally, this report will incorporate
comprehensive detail of the physiological systemic weakening that can prompt septic shock. Finally,
in depth details about the investigation towards the red flags of disintegration, for example, intense
respiratory trouble disorder will be analysed.
METHODS Various methods were used during the direction of this clinical report. Different sources
were investigated using the AUT library and online database to assemble books and journal articles.
To guarantee that the data assembled was of high scholastic quality, genuine distributed books and

Differences Between Fanon And De Tocqueville
Despite the fact that one cannot force a national identity, the drive to mold and create one runs deep in
both Fanon s and de Tocqueville s writings. At this point, the differences in background and the
purposes of writing between our two authors becomes apparent. De Tocqueville s project with Algeria
aims to investigate the best way to colonize with the least detriment to the French. Given that the
colonists had already deposed the old government to install their own at the time of his writings, de
Tocqueville identifies a few sources of danger for the French in Algeria and proposes a path forward.
At the time, the French had plans to unseat a remnant government in Constantine in the east of Algiers
and ally with Abd el Kader in the west of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both believe that the identity has to flow from the bottom up (that is to say that it must be based on the
desires and cultures of the people), realize that a shared identity is paramount to the security of a
nation, and even share the opinion that violence creates new and strengthens old identities. Even
moreover, both recognize that one state with two strong national identities cannot be beneficial for all
people: de Tocqueville in his analysis of Abd el Kader, and Fanon explicitly writing that the two
confront each other, but not in the service of a higher unity... there is no reconciliation possible, one of
them is superfluous (Fanon 4). The two only theoretically diverge on the ease of establishing a unified
culture. Furthermore, they practically diverge on the end goals of of national identity and the resulting
class structure. It clearly follows, then, that the primary difference between Fanon and de Tocqueville
s take on national identity stems purely from their respective positions in life, the anti colonialist
against the

Andrew Jackson s Characterization Of The Age Of Jackson
Andrew Jackson first had a military career that evolved into a political career in the Age of Jackson.
The Age of Jackson is an accurate characterization of the era between 1815 and 1845, because Jackson
dominated the political sphere in the US. He was the dominant political figure that was almost as
influential and as representative as Martin Van Buren. Van Buren was the only politician that could
challenge Andrew Jackson in politics, because Jackson s characterization embodied the views held in
the first 40 years of the early 1800s.
Does that seem an apt characterization?
Jackson maintained his image as a dominant figure as president from 1828 to 1837 when he fought for
southerners as he garnered the attention of Whigs to preserve the Union. Jackson is regarded as a
national hero that excelled in military and politics. Examples of this accurate characterization are his
title as the Indian Fighter and his actions as President of the United States. In The Battle of New
Orleans and Seminole Wars. His actions, while extremely xenophobic and racist, were revered by the
general public, but he is still seen as a national historical figure. He had a decisive victory over the
British in the Battle of New Orleans when he prevented the British from taking the Louisiana
Purchase despite being outnumbered by around 10,000 troops. He was an astute militarily strategist
that anticipated and fended off British at the Siege of Fort St. Philip in a critical point of the Battle of

The Pros And Cons Of Vgo Robots
Many students struggling with cancer or other terminal illnesses can t reasonably make it to class
every day, but they shouldn t have to miss out on the lessons and social interactions that come with
school. VGo robots can solve this problem by helping students attend class from afar. The VGo isn t
currently accessible to every family with a sick child, as models go for about $6,000, but for those that
can afford them they allow students to continue with the normal activities of everyday life in spite of
their illness even if through a not so normal means. What s more, the greater the adoption of this
technology, the more likely it is that the price will come down, so it s worth thinking of ways to use
this technology now. Autistic students often find communicating with other people intimidating and
confusing facial expressions and nonverbal cues that other kids would easily pick up on are just harder
to comprehend. Robots can look a little bit like humans, but without all those confusing expressions
that distract from what a person is saying. The Nao robot has been helping kids with autism learn
social cues, as well as different educational lessons for a few years with a fair amount of success.
Smaller children working with the robot have learned how to identify the different types of animals in
their lessons, and slightly older kids can work with the robot (who provides responses to help them
understand their progress) to learn basic reading skills. The robots

The Spiritual Exercises Of Ignatius Loyola
I will explore a few of unique approaches as outlined in the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius Loyola. I
will describe my experience of integrating some of the concepts of spiritual direction into my practice.
Barry and Connolly in their book The Practice of Spiritual Direction say that, we define Christian
spiritual direction as help given by one Christian to another which enables that person to pay attention
to God s personal communication to him or her, to respond to this personally communicating God, to
grow in intimacy with this God and to live out the consequences of the relationship . Smith says that
spiritual direction rests on the assumption that each Christian believer has the capacity for an
immediate relationship with Christ. This means that the Christian, in real time, encounters the
crucified, risen and ascended Lord . Therefore, my understanding of spiritual direction is that it is an
attempt to help Christians to listen to God s voice, to develop intimate prayer life and relationship with
God and to grow in response to God.
Ignatius Loyola in his Spiritual Exercises promotes our capacity, through our prayers, to hear Christ s
voice and to use our senses to feel and experience His presence. Smith says, Spiritual Exercises of
Ignatius Loyola is very focus on Jesus or, more specifically, on the Jesus story: his birth, life, death
and resurrection. In prayer and through the guidance of the Exercises, we are drawn into the Jesus
story so that our lives

the choice of an abortion that does not mean they need to take. It does not affect Pro Life supporters to

supporters do not get angry when people don t get abortions because that would be ridiculous. Just
like non abortionists should not get angry when people exercise their freedom of choice. Parents that

The Machine Of Death By Ryan North, Matthew Bennardo And...
Death is usually portrayed as both grim and darkly humorous in many pieces of literature and short
stories is one of the forms that allows writers to do both. Machine of Death is a two book anthology
series of stories, one page cartoons and illustrations edited by Ryan North, Matthew Bennardo and
David Malki. These were written and drawn by them and several other authors and illustrators by
conveying their own take on how they believe their character would handle it if they were forewarned
and forearmed of their own demise. These stories are varied by genre, style, approach and technique
but they all have two things in common. They all feature the titled Machine of Death which is a
fictional device created by the editors (and a fictional team of scientists and engineers) that allows any
of the characters involved to pay a fee (it varies from ten to twenty dollars depending on the story),
stick their finger in a slot to have their blood taken and a card pops out to reveal exactly how they die
and they are never wrong. However, if anyone expected it all to be as simple as that, this is where the
added twist that ties everything together is used. These cards only reveal the method of how they die.
For example, if a card said CANCER or STARVATION , that is all the information they receive. It
does not state how these circumstances come to be or exactly when they die and that is where the
existential crises of it all comes into play. These stories explain how

Canadian Friendship Treaties
Peace and Friendship Treaties Reflection
Peace and Friendship treaties, in Canada, were agreements that proposed long lasting promises,
mutual obligations, and and benefits for both sides. An early peace treaty was The Great Law of Peace
and The People of the Longhouse. This treaty was made to govern customs and relationships between
the tribes. It was passed down orally from generations and was written down for the first time in 1880.
Another treaty that was made between Europeans and Aboriginal peoples was the great piece of 1701.
This treaty helped stabilize the Europeans with the Aboriginals. This treaty still exists to this day. The

However they were orally talk to the people of each tribe. Oral treaties were meant for settling land
disputes and ending other conflicts amongst different bands. Rain and marriage arrangements were
commonly made between tribes as well. When the Europeans came into contact with the first
aboriginals, they use their own methods with written treaties instead of oral treaties. The peace treaty
was made within a written treaty, this was usually how they represented relationships between
Europeans and the Aboriginal people. Another interesting, historical way that the First Nations kept
records of their relationships was with the first nations wampum belt. Wampum belts were usually
mean to keep travel records or communicate with other groups when they would come across different
bands. So, not only did the Europeans and aborigines have treaties, both sides had agreement
agreements that helped everyone get along. Treaties are mutually beneficial, instead of just taking
what each group wanted from each other, they had mutual respect and rules which made life easier
when existing with each other. However the Europeans did try to pursue the First Nations into doing
what they wanted. First Nations we re not always happy with the written trees made among the
Europeans because they did not include the oral promises made to the First Nations. There is no

The easier Chi flows through houses, the wealthier families would be. Also, 2 other fundamental
principles of Feng Shui encompass the harmony of Yin Yang and rule of 5 elements. Yin and Yang, on
one hand, represent 2 opposite but intertwined forces of nature: Feminine (passive energy) and
Masculine (active energy). A good Yin Yang application might include strong/bright colors in mixture
with calm/lighter ones in house painting, adding decoration items with soft features to abate the
intensity of Yang dominated rooms. On the other hand, 5 element rule concentrates on 5 key
components of life: Fire, Water, Wood, Metal and Earth. The integration of these 5 elements in each
part of the house is encouraged but not compulsory, though it would create balance within it.
According to Carol Olmstead a professional Feng Shui practitioner, besides these 3 basic principles,
there are also 2 other rules: The Bagua and Continuity Connectedness, as we will discuss later in next

War Without Mercy by Dower Essay
War Without Mercy by Dower In War Without Mercy , Dower s principle is a surprising one: Though
Western allies were clearly headed for victory, pure racism fueled the persistence and increase of
hostilities in the Pacific setting during the final year of World War II, a period that saw as many
casualties as in the first five years of the conflict combined. Dower does not reach this disturbing
conclusion lightly. He combed through loads of propaganda films, news articles, military documents,
and cartoons. Though his case is strong, Dower reduces other factors, such as the prolonged
negotiations between the West and the Japanese. During World War II, with the alliance of Germany

Overall, the Why We Fight films reflect the strategic priorities of the U.S. government and focused
primarily on the struggle in the West. A Japanese equivalent to this series is titled The Battle of China.
This was an epic paean to the resistance of the Chinese people against Japan s aggression. Through all
of the destruction and devastation of the Japanese, they come with this counterpoint that was
heightened by a commentary in which Japan s rhetoric of co existence and co prosperity was recited
while the screen showed the devastation of China s cities and the mutilated corpses of its men,
women, and children. In the United States and Britain, Dower reminds us, the Japanese were more
hated than the Germans before as well as after Pearl Harbor. On this, there was no dispute among
contemporary observers. They were perceived as a race apart, even a species apart and an
overpoweringly monolithic one at that. There was no Japanese counterpart to the good German in the
popular consciousness of the Western Allies. (8) But there are two answers in the book that gives us a
reason on why there was more hatred towards the Japanese than the Germans. These are the same
Germans that engaged in a systematic genocide against millions of Jews. But why the Japanese were
more hated than the Germans despite the latter s orgy of violence, is surely in large part racial. It s not

How We Got Over Chapter Summary
How We Got Over is book full of selected speeches vocalized by Dr. John A. Peoples, Jr., a former
President of Jackson State University. The selected speeches cover topics centered around African
Americans, specifically African American education. Most of the speeches, compiled in the book by
Dr. John A. Peoples, Jr. himself, are from his Jackson State University Founders Day speeches. The
speeches are arranged chronologically, and some of the speeches are given discrete introductions to
elucidate the concern, purpose, or problem being addressed (Peoples ix). The book s title is a little
misleading because one underlying theme of the entire book is that the struggles for African
Americans are not over. Even though some of the speeches were voiced as far back as 1950, many of
the author s subject matter and presented perspectives are applicable to the today s society, most
unambiguously the African American community. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dr. Peoples begins his compilation of speeches with a speech he gave as valedictorian of Jackson State
College on May 24, 1950. The speech addresses the inverse relationship between man s progress in
solving physical problems and his progress solving social problems (2). Dr. Peoples ends the speech
by asserting to his fellow graduates that as graduates, they must attack society s issues head on, and be
leaders to the African American community to solve society s social problems (4). That speech, given
by a young John A. Peoples, Jr., presents the fundamental purpose by which he has lived. This purpose

Theme Of Isolation In Countee Cullen s Poem
At times many individuals feel isolated and disconnected with society. Literary works by Countee
Cullen, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and Robert Frost depicts an individual s isolationism and alienation
within society. In Countee Cullen s poem Incident , the speaker tells of a distant flashback of how they
first handly experienced being called out a derogatory name from the lips of an eight year old. In
Langston Hughes I, Too , the speaker expresses their witful sentiments in being forced to eat in the

McKay uses simile in If We Must Die to show how and make readers feel a sense of isolation when
individuals are constantly tormented to discourage them from being accepted in society. In the poem,
the speaker valiantly expresses their desires to fight to the very end, as their enemies hunt them like a
pack of savage dogs, all the while cornering them into submission and death. The speaker says, If we
must die, let it not be like hogs/ Hunted and penned in an inglorious spot,/ While round us bark the
mad and hungry dogs,/ Making their mock at our accursed lot (page 19). The speaker compares
himself and his group of supporters as hogs, making a statement to not be hunted and to be killed like
cattle. The speaker also compares the mad and hungry dogs as the other offending party tormenting
the speaker and his supporters. The overall message the speaker is trying to make is that, if the speaker
is going to die, he d rather not die like a cattle who is cornered by the mad dogs , which represents the
people in the society who are not accepting of the speaker nor his supporters. This is inferred as how
the speaker is chased out by the other offending party, showing a connection to how the speaker is
being alienated because he does not have a place in society. The people in the society, also referred to

Helicopters Persuasive Essay
With countless people dying, climbing, each year, should these people be saved, even if it means

escalating in number each year. Although this method is very expensive, it also very efficient. Less
attentive to the dangers, some of the climbers do drastic things because they know that rescue services
are just one phone call away. Then, there are climbers who make an endeavor to push that thought to
the back of their mind. But some people debate whether it still does have an impact on their decisions.
Even if they put others in danger, all of these climbers have the right to be saved because the rangers
are capable of saving them and the services are skilled enough. The starting reason that people have
the rights to be recovered is because the services are capable of saving them. In the source, Helicopter

The Use Of Positive Emotion Building Exercises
Cultivating gratitude in students through the use of positive emotion building exercises will differ
between year levels as a students ability to personally reflect / contribute and understand is continually
developing. One cannot expect a student in reception to write an explicitly detailed gratitude letter.
However, with teacher directed guidance, a group sharing activity involving What Went Well can
certainly be beneficial to those who participate (Seligman et al. 2009). The use of the following
exercises depends predominantly on the ability of the students, and what exercise could be utilised
most greatly to enhance the positive emotion of gratitude.

What did I give? What trouble and difficulties did I cause to others? Indeed, a sincere reflection is not
an easy task as it requires individuals to have a willingness to face our mistakes, but when done so

Gratitude Journal:
This exercise can be in conjunction with What Went Well or it can be completed separately on its own.
The practice of journalling allows individuals to ponder what they are currently grateful for, ranging
from the simplistic to the lavish experiences. Research has shown that individuals who have partaken
in weekly gratitude journalling increased their overall happiness and gratitude, and were more likely
to obtain goals regarding academic performance (Chan 2010 Seligman 2011).

Analysis Of The Book Meridian By Alice Walker
Alice Walker once said, No person is your friend who demands your silence, or denies you the right to
grow. Due to the extreme patriarchal society based in the sixties era, women s voices were often
disregarded and silenced. In the historical novel Meridian, by Alice Walker, the main female
protagonist, Meridian, struggles to comply with the harsh patriarchal systems set in place in her
community, in turn, she uses her silence as a form of resistance. She has various encounters with a
man named Truman, whom she is in love with, but fears she s not good enough because of the color of
her skin. She begins articulate her thoughts and acting without explanation. To replace her silenced
voice, Walker uses third person omniscient and characterization. Meridian is a woman with endless
thoughts and questions that she neglects to voice or ask. The root of Meridian s resistant manner stems
from the uncomfortable power struggle she has with men, like Truman, because of the expectations of
women in the sixties. Men were placed above women and women s opinions were deemed irrelevant.
The author s usage of third person omniscient reveals Meridian s subconscious thoughts during
moments where her voice is overpowered by a male character. For example, She was also tempted to
add white exchange students. But how polite she was! (Walker 108). In this scene Meridian runs into
Truman and begins a dialogue about his beliefs. Meridian is embarrassed by Truman s infatuation with

Literary Argument:
In Into the Wild, Krakauer alludes to the works of Leo Tolstoy, Henry David Thoreau, and Jack
London to show how Chris McCandless infatuation with existentialist literature influenced his
decision to leave society behind and venture into the wild.
Outline:
Throughout Into the Wild, many authors are mentioned and alluded to by Krakauer, the most
significant of these being Leo Tolstoy, Henry David Thoreau, and Jack London. Krakauer uses these
allusions to illustrate how Chris McCandless was heavily influenced by these writers with whom he
was so fascinated.
Krakauer alludes to the writing of Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy to show the similarities between him
and McCandless.
Krakauer uses allusions to and excerpts from Tolstoy s writing to demonstrate how his wish for
adventure and a nontraditional lifestyle inspired McCandless and led him to have many similar ideals.
Tolstoy was a Russian Novelist who longed for a nontraditional lifestyle far from his noble lineage (
Leo Tolstoy ).
Stubborn and arrogant, Tolstoy refused to ally himself with any particular intellectual school of
thought. Declaring himself an anarchist, he made off to Paris in 1857 ( Leo Tolstoy ).
Tolstoy was morally opposed to a structured lifestyle and searched for an exciting adventure that he
believed would leave him feeling fulfilled.
McCandless identified with Tolstoy s longing for adventure and excitement.

most powerful leader of all time. What is it that makes him such a powerful leader? What has he

These are all questions that when combined as one create a debate that has been going on for decades.
There are those who admire Alexander s military achievements and ability to carve out the largest

He was a self confident man who only wanted to conquer for self pleasure. Alexander is the reason
that corruption and peculation were treated with casualness during this time. His pleasure was when
his peoples were loyal to him and that was all that was necessary for his approval. It was because of
him that Macedonia lost its manpower through the strenuous battles he continuously fought. He left it
as a weakened kingdom. His empire is given so much credit but it was only based on rapid military
conquest and died right after his death (Stoneman 92 94). It is believed that Alexander conquered to
rule, not to blend cultures. Heavy drinking led to disastrous incidents and hastened his death. An
example of such a disaster was the burning down of Persepolis in a drunken revel. This is not an
attribute of a good leader. He also lacked long range planning and neglected his kingdoms future by
exhausting himself in warfare while he delayed fathering a royal successor. His selfishness is proved
by his act of casually killing any threats to the throne at the beginning of his reign (Sacks 15). Those
who see Alexander in a negative manner obviously have quite strong opinions about it. They see him
as more of a madman than the most powerful leader. It is easy to see where they get their assumptions
from for they look at the bloodshed part of Alexander s reign. Instead of focusing on the rare ability he

Reasons For Self-Driving Cars Are Our Future
3 Reasons Why Google Self Driving Cars are Our Future
Google has dipped their hands into anything that you can imagine, and self driving cars is no
exception. The future of automobiles is autonomous driving, and that is something that everyone
needs to realize. Many companies have started to work with this kind of technology, and Google has
as well.
FIRST REASON
Google is going to make self driving cars the future, and one of the biggest reasons is because they
have already started. A couple of days ago, the company announced that they were working on a self
driving car program, and that it was simulating three million miles of driving every day. Not only this
but Google also stated that ever since 2009, there 55 self driving cars have driven

leading and managing changes Essay
1.0 Introduction
1.1 Background
The David Jones is iconic department store in Australian retail industry, but the net profit of David
Jones has been decreasing because of the rapid retail environmental changes, unhealthy cultures, and
global online attack. The problems of declining net profit in David Jones are creating make it essential
to apply the most suitable change management for company.
1.2 Aim The aim of this report is not only applying the change management theory, model, and style
for David Jones and David Jones CEO, Paul Zahra, but also supporting the arguments through case
studies in order to find practical solution.
1.3 Scope
This report presents the view that a positive model, modular transformation and ... Show more content

it is supported by case studies that the linkage between inability of identifying of retail environmental
changes and Zahra s new rescue plan for David Jones failed because after the new rescue plan of
Zahra, net profit and share price continued to decrease. Moreover, the case study said that it may be a
good five years before strategy can be assessed properly (Waddell Waddell, Cummings Worley 2014).
On the other hand, Lewin s change model or action research model is not suitable for David Jones
case because of focusing on more problems in the organisation than concentrating on retail
environmental changes. The result of implementation of Lewin s change model or action research
model would be led to the strategic failure. The possibility of positive model of planned change for
David Jones makes it necessary for the company to use positive model.
3. THE CURRENT RESTRUCTURE OF DAVID JONES
3.1 Current business restructure analysis
Even though this report agrees with the current restructure and rescue plan of David Jones, which
were divided main three parts including eleven subparts that are renovating store policies, focusing its
core strengths, and transferring from traditional business to technologically oriented business, I want
to add two main parts that are sustainable training and focused marketing strategy.

The Tao, Te Tao
Through religion adherents are enabled to fulfill our need to search for and find meaning within our
own lives. Many religions help to provide its followers with this fulfillment through the principal
beliefs, which are held as sacred. Followers of Daoism follow traditions based on philosophy and
connectedness to nature and the world around us. Through this Daoists are enabled to forge a strong
bond with the world around them, using it to empower them, this then allows for the followers to feel
fulfillment in their lives as they strive to attain inner peace and immortality.
Daoism revolves around our interaction with Tao and the flow of Chi. The Tao (otherwise known as
the way) can be described as the order of the universe affecting everything throughout life. Humans
cannot understand the Tao and its working throughout the universe. The Tao manifests itself within
our world in many different forms, it is found within nature, the world and the universe. The Tao Te
Ching written by Laozi describes the Tao as The Tao that can be spoken of is not the constant Tao; The
name that can be named Is not the constant Name. (Tao Te Ching Chapter 1) Another description of
the Tao comes from the sage Chuang Tzu who defines the Tao as The way is to man as rivers and
lakes are to fish, the natural condition of life. (www.bbc.co.uk.) From this we can see how the Tao is a
concept that cannot be understood, it is a part of the supernatural world transcending anything that we

  • 2. Gary Soto Research Paper Gary Soto: A Man of Inspiration By: Josie Estrella Freeman, Bloque Tres, el seis de octubre It appears these days I don t have much of a life because my nose is often stuck in a book. But I discovered that reading builds a life inside the mind. Gary Soto. This man has dedicated his life to reading, writing, and promoting young readers. He is a renowned poet and author for both children and adults. Soto is very successful at what he does, and he has won many awards to prove that. But most of all, Gary Soto s biggest accomplishment is inspiring others. Some accepted the multitude of races while many did not. In Darkroom: a Memoir in Black White by Lila Quintero Weaver she depicts from the eyes of an outsider of what truly happened during this trying time between races. Weaver and her family had no idea of the history that was about to be made when they arrived back in the United States. While in Argentina her family was seen as different they were not treated as poorly as the blacks in America. Throughout the novel Weaver chooses to use black and white images to depict how she saw the world in the time during the Civil Rights movement for many reasons but some that stand out was the lack of perspective, the choice of racism based on skin color, and because of what she grew up loving, her fathers pictures. By the time Weaver and her family had arrived slavery was a thing of the past but the ideas of the social standards of blacks had still not left the minds of white southern Americans. Children are not born racist and never will be the, selfishness of the parents and their beliefs is what causes the outrageous comments and actions to continue between generations. • 5. Greek Philosopher Xenophanes Xenophanes was a Greek philosopher before the Socratic era whose conception of God was different from other philosophers of his time. Before the evolution of God as a non human entity the ancient Greeks believed that Gods and Goddesses were similar to that of humans and the only distinction was that Gods were immortal and humans were mortal. He challenged openly the concept of divinity proposed by Homer and put forward his ideas of God through his poetic approach. He noticed the corrupt behavior of humans and realized that if human are going to worship any being it must be worthy of such an honor. He argued that ancient Greek Gods of Olympia had experienced downfall similar to humans and thus are not worthy of being worshipped. Xenophanes declared the idea of unity of God. This notion was very unusual for Greek culture and society. He suggested that different poets and writers have induced the idea of multiple Gods in the minds of Greeks. But the character of these Gods was against the very idea of a divine entity. Xenophanes attacked the Greek mythology of his time by defining the unexplained deepness of nature of divinity. He declined to accept the idea that Gods were just like human, they were born, required cloths and are dependant on their body. Discussion There were two angles from which Xenophanes viewed God. One is that Homeric Gods showed behaviors that were quite similar to the behaviors of humans. As per the definition, God had to be someone much greater than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

All objects can bend light but usually the change is not measurable on smaller objects such as humans, for any substantial bend to occur it would take a huge mass and a light ray to travel extremely close to the matter. When the light bends it can alters the shape of the image, with a galaxy for example it can bend or warp the shape which is normally elliptical or spiral looking. (Grocutt, 2015) An accretion disk is formed when rocks, gasses and other satellites travel close to a black hole; they are sucked into the gravitational field (StrongGravity, 2013). A black hole is a place in space where the gravitational field is so great that not even light can escape it. Socrates, who values wisdom and justice over power and prestige, would view Machiavelli s concept of a Prince very contradicting to how he believes a good life should be lived. Socrates found great power in his analysis of Athens, rather than direct involvement. Through questioning, reason, and critical analysis he attempts to instill wisdom, truth and virtue in Athens, specifically in the youth. He was charged with corrupting the youth because his idea of how life should be lived was much different than that of the states. Socrates corrupted the youth of Athens because he degenerated or undeveloped them from becoming strong political, economic, and military leaders. The people of Athens, in particular the wealthy and powerful, wanted their children to be educated in ideals that Machiavelli would support. • 17. Andrew Jackson s Characterization Of The Age Of Jackson Andrew Jackson first had a military career that evolved into a political career in the Age of Jackson. The Age of Jackson is an accurate characterization of the era between 1815 and 1845, because Jackson dominated the political sphere in the US. He was the dominant political figure that was almost as influential and as representative as Martin Van Buren. Van Buren was the only politician that could challenge Andrew Jackson in politics, because Jackson s characterization embodied the views held in the first 40 years of the early 1800s. Does that seem an apt characterization? Jackson maintained his image as a dominant figure as president from 1828 to 1837 when he fought for southerners as he garnered the attention of Whigs to preserve the Union. Jackson is regarded as a national hero that excelled in military and politics. Examples of this accurate characterization are his title as the Indian Fighter and his actions as President of the United States. In The Battle of New Orleans and Seminole Wars. His actions, while extremely xenophobic and racist, were revered by the general public, but he is still seen as a national historical figure. He had a decisive victory over the British in the Battle of New Orleans when he prevented the British from taking the Louisiana Purchase despite being outnumbered by around 10,000 troops. • 19. The Spiritual Exercises Of Ignatius Loyola I will explore a few of unique approaches as outlined in the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius Loyola. I will describe my experience of integrating some of the concepts of spiritual direction into my practice. Barry and Connolly in their book The Practice of Spiritual Direction say that, we define Christian spiritual direction as help given by one Christian to another which enables that person to pay attention to God s personal communication to him or her, to respond to this personally communicating God, to grow in intimacy with this God and to live out the consequences of the relationship . Smith says that spiritual direction rests on the assumption that each Christian believer has the capacity for an immediate relationship with Christ. This means that the Christian, in real time, encounters the crucified, risen and ascended Lord . Therefore, my understanding of spiritual direction is that it is an attempt to help Christians to listen to God s voice, to develop intimate prayer life and relationship with God and to grow in response to God. Ignatius Loyola in his Spiritual Exercises promotes our capacity, through our prayers, to hear Christ s voice and to use our senses to feel and experience His presence. Smith says, Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius Loyola is very focus on Jesus or, more specifically, on the Jesus story: his birth, life, death and resurrection. Death is usually portrayed as both grim and darkly humorous in many pieces of literature and short stories is one of the forms that allows writers to do both. Machine of Death is a two book anthology series of stories, one page cartoons and illustrations edited by Ryan North, Matthew Bennardo and David Malki. These were written and drawn by them and several other authors and illustrators by conveying their own take on how they believe their character would handle it if they were forewarned and forearmed of their own demise. They all feature the titled Machine of Death which is a fictional device created by the editors (and a fictional team of scientists and engineers) that allows any of the characters involved to pay a fee (it varies from ten to twenty dollars depending on the story), stick their finger in a slot to have their blood taken and a card pops out to reveal exactly how they die and they are never wrong. However, if anyone expected it all to be as simple as that, this is where the added twist that ties everything together is used. These cards only reveal the method of how they die. Also, 2 other fundamental principles of Feng Shui encompass the harmony of Yin Yang and rule of 5 elements. Yin and Yang, on one hand, represent 2 opposite but intertwined forces of nature: Feminine (passive energy) and Masculine (active energy). A good Yin Yang application might include strong/bright colors in mixture with calm/lighter ones in house painting, adding decoration items with soft features to abate the intensity of Yang dominated rooms. On the other hand, 5 element rule concentrates on 5 key components of life: Fire, Water, Wood, Metal and Earth. The integration of these 5 elements in each part of the house is encouraged but not compulsory, though it would create balance within it. Dower does not reach this disturbing conclusion lightly. He combed through loads of propaganda films, news articles, military documents, and cartoons. Through all of the destruction and devastation of the Japanese, they come with this counterpoint that was heightened by a commentary in which Japan s rhetoric of co existence and co prosperity was recited while the screen showed the devastation of China s cities and the mutilated corpses of its men, women, and children. In the United States and Britain, Dower reminds us, the Japanese were more hated than the Germans before as well as after Pearl Harbor. On this, there was no dispute among contemporary observers. They were perceived as a race apart, even a species apart and an overpoweringly monolithic one at that. There was no Japanese counterpart to the good German in the popular consciousness of the Western Allies. The selected speeches cover topics centered around African Americans, specifically African American education. Most of the speeches, compiled in the book by Dr. John A. Peoples, Jr. himself, are from his Jackson State University Founders Day speeches. The speeches are arranged chronologically, and some of the speeches are given discrete introductions to elucidate the concern, purpose, or problem being addressed (Peoples ix). The book s title is a little misleading because one underlying theme of the entire book is that the struggles for African Americans are not over. Even though some of the speeches were voiced as far back as 1950, many of the author s subject matter and presented perspectives are applicable to the today s society, most unambiguously the African American community. ... In the poem, the speaker valiantly expresses their desires to fight to the very end, as their enemies hunt them like a pack of savage dogs, all the while cornering them into submission and death. The speaker says, If we must die, let it not be like hogs/ Hunted and penned in an inglorious spot,/ While round us bark the mad and hungry dogs,/ Making their mock at our accursed lot (page 19). The speaker compares himself and his group of supporters as hogs, making a statement to not be hunted and to be killed like cattle. The speaker also compares the mad and hungry dogs as the other offending party tormenting the speaker and his supporters. The overall message the speaker is trying to make is that, if the speaker is going to die, he d rather not die like a cattle who is cornered by the mad dogs , which represents the people in the society who are not accepting of the speaker nor his supporters. It was because of him that Macedonia lost its manpower through the strenuous battles he continuously fought. He left it as a weakened kingdom. His empire is given so much credit but it was only based on rapid military conquest and died right after his death (Stoneman 92 94). An example of such a disaster was the burning down of Persepolis in a drunken revel. This is not an attribute of a good leader.
