Becoming A Mentee
I have been a mentee throughout various phases of my career as well as in school. I have had great
mentors who have been very open and honest about strengths and weaknesses and who have tried to
guide me over the years. It has been a tremendous benefit and something I probably took for granted
until I was asked to participate in a formal mentorship program at work. The mentorship committee
spent a lot of time developing documentation and discussing goals and expectations for both sides
which I found encouraging. The mentees and mentors were given an overview of what to expect and
how to prepare for their meetings with the mentee clearly being told that they had to schedule the
meetings, determine the recurrence and drive the discussion. The mentors were given guidelines on
how to work with the mentees and how to encourage participation.
One of the key items I would identify as fundamental for mentees to be successful is to have them
develop and define a goal. The mentee must know what they expect to gain from the relationship to be
able to measure and determine if it was successful. One of the main points to cover with a mentee is to
ensure they understand that they are guiding their own destiny and the expectation that a mentor will
have all the answers is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A community of practice is a group or groups of people who share a concern or passion in what they
do and learn how to do it better as they interact. A good example of micro level knowledge is the
knowledge required to execute a task on a project. An example of a community of practice can be an
association of specific professionals who meet to discuss challenges, trends in their fields and
collaborate to help each other. Mentors can be viewed as individuals who are sharing their micro level
knowledge in a community of practice that can be defined by boundaries such as the workplace or a

When Theodore Roosevelt Saved Football Summary
In his historical article When Theodore Roosevelt Saved Football , Bruce Watson evaluates the
brutality that often occurred in 20th century football and how Theodore Roosevelt influenced the
safety procedures currently enforced in modem day competition. Although being respected by the 26th
president, Roosevelt himself was never an active football player; however, he was influenced by his
respect for the game and his own son s lethal experiences who was knocked unconscious. At the time,
Injuries had been occurring at alarming rates with a total of 45 men dying at the hands of fans
entertained by foul play. Major institutions including Harvard, Yale, and Princeton were split between
pro and anti factions against the sport. Consequently, Roosevelt

Types Of Any Wireless Communication System
A microstrip antenna consists of conducting patch and a ground plane separated by dielectric
substrate. The early work of Munson on microstrip antennas for use as a low profile flush mounted
antennas on rockets and missiles showed that this was a practical concept for use in many antenna
system problems. Different mathematical models were developed for this antenna and its applications
were extended to many other fields. The number of articles published in the journal papers for the last
ten years. The microstrip antennas are the first antenna designer s choice. Low dielectric constant
substrates are generally preferred for maximum radiation. The conducting patch can have many shape
but rectangular and circular configurations are the most commonly used configuration. A microstrip
antenna is characterized by its length parameter, width parameter, input impedance, and gain and
radiation patterns. Various performance parameters, mathematical calculation and Microstrip feeding
technique will be discussed further through this chapter. Antennas are key components of any wireless
communication system and it is a device that provides a way for radiation or receiving
electromagnetic waves. IEEE standard definitions for antenna (IEEE Std 145 1983) defines antenna as
a means for radiating or receiving radio wave. Figure 3.1 shows an antenna as transition device. The

Charlestown Light Display
It s the time of the year where people turn yards into a giant light displays. In many town squares
people create an electric winter wonderland by creating light displays that are set up in amazing
patterns to make props of anything that is relative of Christmas, scenes from famous Christmas
movies, famous Christmas characters, or Characters that have a cartoon or movie. have speakers that
play Christmas music, and setting lights to turn on or off to make a part. In Scottsburg sadly we have a
display, but its not interactive or impressive as other towns.
There are some alternatives to the crisis of wanting a good display you can visit these local displays
that you will enjoy. In Charlestown they have a fully automated light display with music, lights, and
fake snow machines almost every year. Each year there is something new added to the display making
it even better than before. The lights that are in the display are centered in the park in the square, but
they put the lights not only in that one space in the park but on surrounding buildings. The

Egalitarianism And Sexism
When we talk about sexism, most of the people will think that it has disappeared when 21st century
began where new thinking came to people s mind and changed the way they think.but I personally
disagree with this point, nowadays, sexism still exists in our world, not only in some underdeveloped
counties in Africa, but also in some well known nations such as Britain, U.S.A and many other
European countries. To me it is very strange that these countries were influenced by egalitarianism
way earlier than the countries in Asia or South America. Such history, however, did not completely
wipe sexism out from their minds , that s why we still sometimes see news about sexism in our tv. In
addition, some females become feminist in order to fight back because of sexism, in fact, females
often act as a victim of sexism as they are not as strong as males and may be even considered as weak
or incapable in some situations while females are actually able to finish the work just like males or
even better. So I think that people especially males should stop discriminating females just because
they don t seem strong, and females shall also stop doing it even the public still thinks it is rare. We
can t keep our society running well without different people playing their own roles. For instance, if
all doctors do not go to work, many lives will be in danger because they don t get the best treatment
from doctors who are supposed to help them. With that said, we also can t keep society running

Pre-Litigation Research Paper
Pre Litigation: What Happens Before Filing a Lawsuit?
Going to court is usually the last step in a long process of trying to settle a dispute. There are usually
several steps taken before a lawsuit is even filed with the courts. These steps help both parties prepare
for the lawsuit. It also opens up opportunities to settle the dispute without the need to go to court.
Notice
When one party has a complaint or dispute with another party, the first step in the process is formal
notification. This often comes in the form of a notice letter sent by the injured party s attorney to the
other party, his attorney, and his insurance company. This notice outlines what the dispute is about. It
may also request information on insurance coverage, policy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net
...
The demand can take several forms. It may be a claim that goes to the other party s insurance
company. It may be a letter going straight to the other party demanding compensation for the injury.
The demand may be a simple letter or it may be a multi page document with copies of the information
gathered during the investigation.
Trying to Settle
The formal demand usually brings an opportunity to settle the case before filing suit. In many cases,
these settlement negotiations are informal, involving discussions between the attorneys, insurance
representatives, and clients. It may be a time when one party makes a settlement offer. Counteroffers
and settlement rejections can also happen.
More formal dispute resolution solutions are also available, including mediation. With mediation, a
neutral third party works with the injured party and the defendant to reach a negotiated settlement.
If a case cannot be settled, the next step is to file a formal lawsuit.

John Berger Ways Of Seeing Analysis
In John Berger s Ways of Seeing he speaks of how the meaning of artwork is dynamic, because we
cannot visit the past and truly know what each artist is thinking and feeling as he paints his work, so it
changes with one s personal experience and the context in which one experiences them. He also
speaks of how critics mystify artwork of the past, attempting to set in stone their personal meaning of
the piece, closing the door of interpretation to anyone who reads their commentary on the piece. Who
is to decide the meaning of advertisements? Or, do they hold no meaning besides the goal or monetary
gain? In Berger s work, he speaks of the meaning behind a photographer s photo, and how they chose
that moment in time to be captured forever. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Berger believes that the mystification of images narrows the point of view of individuals and that
critics use their status to impose their opinions (Berger 147). In a way, when we view an
advertisement we mystify the image, because as individuals have seen many advertisements, we
impose the meaning that there is no meaning besides that of money. We see nothing behind the
meaning of monetary gain, and we dismiss any other meaning that could be embedded in the photo
because, with our experience we view advertisements as a way to make money and nothing more. We
get this view because at one point in time within the past few decades, someone said that
advertisements we a lie, that everything within them are fake and they are simply used to trick us into
buying things we don t need. All that isn t necessarily false, but that bad reputation leads people to
disguise the beauty in which advertisements truly hold. A large amount of the images in which society
today views are reproductions, via the internet and television. Whether they are physical
reproductions, or a picture or video taken of the original image, Berger believes that the reproduction
of art eradicates the original meaning of many works of art. They have entered the mainstream of life
over which they no longer, in themselves, have power (Berger 159).

How Does George Wilson Change
Quite obviously the character who changed the most was George Wilson. ( Myrtle s Husband.) He
manages to out due everyone in terms of how their personality changed. And in the end his change
brought the demise of a beloved character. From how his personality seemed to be at the start of the
book to how it was at the end. Or the tragic event that he caused by his insanity through grief. Also
that the death of his wife seemed to of scarred him.George Wilson s personality definitely changed the
most from the beginning. You know this is the case just due to his encounters before and after. Before
at the party at Myrtle s apartment, he seemed to be a well mannered, feminine looking man . In
chapter 2, at the party he is described as a feminine man. He ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

But this changes a fair amount by the end of this story. After the death of his wife he seemed to be
instantly distraught and deranged, the first time we hear from him after the fact, he just sounds like an
absolute lunatic. Going on about dog collars and just random things until he deduces who killed his
wife . In a later chapter he is talking to his friend, while his friend just tries to calm him down, George
was already too far gone and made his mind up to take action against his wife s killer. It is quite
obvious to see that he was driven to this by grief. This is the worst Daisy does ( or anyone for that
matter) due to the fact that she directly killed somebody and indirectly cause a murder and suicide.
Also, at the beginning of the book, (in chapter 2) George Wilson does not seem to strike anyone as a
murderer or some deranged man. This is how he was described in chapter 9. In chapter two at the
party, George seemed to be more interested in Tom s business coming his way then the night himself
and was not obnoxious, or evil. He

Habeas Corpus and the War on Terror Essay
How can we justify the war on terrorism abroad when the war was brought to our door steps with very
little remaining abroad but some small resistances? This may be a difficult question to answer but it is
one that can be easily found through understanding of the criminal mind and the way the terrorists
work. The main objective here is to show how the war is going and how the terrorists were classified
as such. I will also be providing information on Habeas Corpus both past and present as well as what
it means both in English and American traditions. Furthermore the way everything will be written will
answer very specific questions asked and I shall answer them.

The reason they are still in prison is because congress said it would not spend another dime to get
them to where they need to be. Now how do we go about suspending or revoking the suspension of
habeas corpus. Our founding fathers thought of that as well so it is stated in the constitution how it
shall be suspended or revoked and this is done when the threat is over and there is no need to capture
enemy combatants or illegal combatants.
Habeas Corpus is a Latin phrase meaning You have the body this may sound a little odd but it just
means that we have a liberty and we have the right to a fair trial and we are to be presumed innocent
until proven guilty by a court of law and juries of my peer. This is the oldest right we have in the
Anglo Saxon law. Interestingly enough, the violation of the writ of Habeas Corpus has not been the
most severe of the civil liberties granted to not only Americans but many other countries. The use and
misuse of this liberty is something that can be abused both by the good guys and the bad ones as well.
By using this as a bad guy who has not yet been convicted he will be running free until his case is
heard and found guilty.
There are many controversy regarding habeas corpus and the one that comes to mind is the one
regarding President Bush and the enemy combatants from Afghanistan and Iraq. When it comes to the
historical evolution of Habeas Corpus including its English and American traditions Habeas corpus

Heteroglossia
Heteroglossia Langue and linguistic variation
Bakhtin developed the notion in contrast with the structuralist account of language, which was
centered in the notion of langue, that is, the systematic set of rules determining the well formedness of
an expression or utterance. This concept, introduced by Saussure, emphasised the notion that the code
conformed by the linguistic norms must be common to all speakers for communication to be possible.
This was seen as a dangerous simplification by Bakhtin, who asserted that languages are internally
divided, not simply into regional dialects, but also into many different strata, corresponding to all
possible axes of social division; he thus posited a minutely nuanced variety of class , ethnia , ... Show

He defines heteroglossia as another s speech in another s language, serving to express authorial
intentions but in a refracted way. Bakhtin identifies the direct narrative of the author, rather than
dialogue between characters, as the primary location of this conflict.
Languages as points of view
Bakhtin viewed the modern novel as a literary form best suited for the exploitation of heteroglossia, in
direct contrast to epic poetry (and, in a lesser degree, poetry in general). The linguistic energy of the
novel was seen in its expression of the conflict between voices through their adscription to different
elements in the novel s discourse.
Any language, in Bakhtin s view, stratifies into many voices: social dialects, characteristic group
behavior, professional jargons, generic languages, languages of generations and age groups,
tendentious languages, languages of the authorities, of various circles and of passing fashions. This
diversity of voice is, Bakhtin asserts, the defining characteristic of the novel as a genre.
Traditional stylistics, like epic poetry, do not share the trait of heteroglossia. In Bakhtin s words,
poetry depersonalizes days in language, while prose, as we shall see, often deliberately intensifies
difference between them...

Lactose Lab Report
Abstract Lactose is recognised as a disaccharide; in other words, it consists of glucose and galactose
and two smaller sugars bound altogether with a covalent bond. In the form described, lactose is
indigestible by us humans; therefore it must be hydrolysed, or broken down, for our body in order to
process it. Lactase catalyses this process by decreasing the energy required for hydrolysis to happen.
Lactase is a digestive enzyme that catalyses the breakdown of lactose, a sugar found in milk. Lactase
works well within a limited range of both pH and temperature in its environment, thus making it
dependent on both elements for it to complete this essential reaction. If lactase is seen as non

A Research Study Conducted By Usher Et Al ( 2012 )
The aim of this literature review is to analyse and evaluate the quantitative research study conducted
by Usher et al (2012). This is a randomised controlled trial that was undertaken to test a nurse led
weight management and exercise intervention which was designed for participants with serious mental
illness (SMI) who take second generation antipsychotic medications. This review will explore the
strengths and weakness of its research methodology which includes study design, study sample, data
collection and analysis by investigating their research study to find out if there is a link between
individuals with serious mental health illness gaining weight from taking second generation
antipsychotic medications.
Mental illness is a medical condition that disturbs a person s way of thinking, feeling, their mood, and
the ability to relate to others and daily functioning. Whereas serious mental illness includes major
depression, schizophrenia, bipolar, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder,
posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and borderline personality disorder. http://www.nami.org
Antipsychotic medications have effectiveness in the treatment of acute psychosis (irrespective of

Flood Lab Report
The purpose of this experiment is to determine whether or not the material that a flood is going
through effects the rate and the size of the damage left behind. The independent variable in this
experiment is the material that the water is going through, where as the dependent variable is the rate
it takes for the water to flood through. Some controlled variables in the experiment are the amount of
water used to simulate the flooding, the amount of material the water is going through, and the
temperature of the water. If the water goes through rocks/gravel, then it will be quicker with less
damage because there is more space for the water to go through without dragging anything out.

After looking at the results, the hypothesis was accepted. There was no trench shown in the material,
and the only signs of flooding was that some of the rocks towards the bottom of the pile moved out a
few inches, but this was only because the rocks were light enough to be moved by the water. Normally
is the rocks moved at all it would only be around 3 inches, with the highest being 3.75 and the lowest
2.5. Also the water went through the rocks really quickly, with the slowest time being five seconds.
The sand had thin trenches but they tended to be a lot deeper. The width of the trench was only 1.5,
but the depth was .75, which compared to the depth of the dirt one which was only .25, is quite deep.
The length was always between 1 and 2 inches, and would normally get thinner as the trench
progressed. This is probably because the sand would soak up the water as the trench progressed. This
material also took the most time to flow through, with its average speed being 10.42 seconds. This one
went slowest because the air pockets in the sand are smaller. Lastly the dirt had a medium time of how
quickly the water flowed through, but had the largest width and length. The average width of the
trench was normally about 2.25 inches, but would get slightly thinner as it progressed towards the
bottom. This change in width was nowhere near as apparent as it was with the sand trenches. These
trenches tended to be kinda large, averaging in a length of 3 inches. There was a lot of extra dirt that
got pulled away which you could see in the water. These trenches were only .25 inches deep, which
was odd since it was the only one that you could pick out individual particles, other than the rocks
since that is how they were measured. Some possible errors that could have occurred in this lab is that
there were some other particles such as strands of

The Princess And The Frog
Young children often hear many fairy tales growing up, one of the most famous is the tale of a
princess kissing a frog to magically transform the frog into a prince so that they could live happily
ever after. In 2009, Walt Disney and Pixar Films released The Princess and the Frog which portrays
different aspects of Louisiana s history during the 1920s. The film tells the story for a young ambitious
chef, Tiana, and her struggles to follow her dreams due to her race, her sex, and the time period. At the
beginning of the movie, Tiana s mother, Eudora, tells her and her best friend Charlotte a story while
working on a gown for Charlotte. Sometimes [the] mothers, being obligated to work and having no
one at home with whom to leave their children, was the reason they brought their children to work
with them (Paradise,64). The story that the two young girls are being told is about a princess kissing a
frog to become a prince, to marry, and live happily ever after. Charlotte says that she would kiss one
hundred frogs if she could be a princess and live happy and rich, yet Tiana takes no interest to what
her mother says. Tiana says that she will never kiss a frog, for she believes she is capable of finding
love without such a silly antic. Charlotte is already wealthy yet she wishes upon stars every chance
that she gets, but Tiana does not like to take chances. She would rather work toward her dreams or

Mean Creek- Important Idea
Explain an important idea in a text you have studied. Explain why you found it interesting. Discuss
visual and verbal techniques in your answer.
In the film Mean Creek directed by Jacob Aaron Estes, the important idea of loss of innocence is very
interesting as it tells the story and shows us how quickly things can change. The director shows us this
through the way the characters change during the burial of George, the word snap written in a tree and
the guilt felt by Millie and Sam.
Firstly I found the important idea of loss of innocence interesting during the burial of George as this is
when they lose their innocence. When they decide to bury Georges body the character all lose what
innocence they had left. This is shown as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A wide shot is used to show George sitting down by himself, this shows how lonely he is and makes
us actually feel sympathy towards him. This is followed by silence which shows how Sam doesn t
want to hurt George. This emphasises the innocence of Sam as he did not wish to do anything which
could result in the death of George. This Quote foreshadows the death of George. As a viewer tension
builds u as we wait the events that link to the death. After the death of George, Millie engraves the
word Snap into a tree. This is significant as it shows how life can change as fast as the snap of the
fingers. A foley effect is used on the scratching of the knife on the tree to show Millie s anger and how
she feels they have not only turned flipped there life upside down but they took a life and destroyed
Georges relatives lives. The foley effect turns your attention the Millie as the viewer anticipates what
she is writing .we now see how just 24 hours before they were all living a normal happy life but now
they are emotionally distort and stumped for a conclusion of what to do. The word snap makes the
important idea of loss of innocence interesting as it shows how fast they have totally lost their
innocence.
Lastly loss of innocence is seen as interesting as Millie and Sam come out and talk about what has
happened. When Sam goes to Millie s room we notice a great change in her personality and feelings.
Millie is no longer a bright happy person

The Other Place By Mary Gaitskill And The Last Speaker Of...
The two short stories that I read was The Other Place by Mary Gaitskill and The Last Speaker of the
Language by Carol Anshaw. I was not thrilled by either story and found that they did not keep my
interest and failed to entertain me. With both stories, I tended to get lost in the scene or setting and
found myself rereading sections. One of the stories I had to rereading to make sure I really understood
the full story. Two characteristics of a successful short stories are the story tends to begin and end
abruptly and limited number of characters. Using these two stories I will analyze them to see if they
meet the short story criteria.
The Last Speaker of the Language does not start off as an abruptly as a short story could. The daughter
is on a ladder finding small vodka bottles above her mother s kitchen cabinets, a hiding place that her
mother uses. There is no abruptness within the first two paragraphs. I would think that an abrupt story
would have dramatic changes or some sort of wild tale was starting. Something that would make the
reader say, whoa what is going in here?
The Other Place also started off with a slower start. It did however have a more interesting and
dramatic beginning as The Last Speaker of the Language did. The Other Place first starts off on how
the narrator son, at the age of 13 likes guns and violence. However, its only a short paragraph and the
next paragraph goes into the description of the boy and how he resembles the father at age

Similarities Between Jazz And Rock N Roll
The future of jazz lies in the music s spontaneity and liveliness. Aspects of the music, that have been
there since its conception, such as improvisation, make it forever subject to change, which is what the
music needs. The jazz music that is being created today is far from what the public expects to hear in
music. It will not be popular, but it stands a very good chance of being excellent music. Change in jazz
is inevitable because, like language, communities change, provide new contexts that require new
expressions, or find new ways of doing things (Nicholson 71). There will always be people who
appreciate jazz s complexity more than the music being played on the radio or the artists selling the
most records. Jazz is dead only in regards to its mainstream popularity, but the music itself is very
much alive. People are incorporating aspects of jazz style into their own works every day by taking it
in new and original directions. Change occurs when someone wants the language or music to do
something it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Other music genres, such as rock n roll, country, and hip hop have attempted to do the same by taking
current issues and addressing them through lyrics or sounds. In particular, jazz and rock n roll share
many similarities. Both relied heavily upon saxophones as lead instruments and both rose from the
outskirts of society to become an integral part of the American musical canon (Fitzgerald 1). Charlie
Watts of the Rolling Stones is one of the most respected musicians in the world for bringing the
sensibilities of a jazz drummer to rock music (www.therollingstones.com). Watts is just one example
of a rock n roll legend whose love and appreciation for music is rooted in/ started with jazz, listening
when he was around ten years old to artists like Miles Davis and John Coltrane

How I Operate Within A Working Environment
Introduction Self reflection is the key in gaining an outlook of a student s strengths and weaknesses.
By understanding these characteristics, one can take action to improve upon them. Within this
assignment I will discuss the tasks and challenges that the company Midland Heart has presented. This
will involve reflecting upon such challenges to assess how I operate within a working environment.
My primary role was to shadow the manager of the law team to study the ways in which she organises
and communicate with her staff. The bulk of my role involved going through housing cases to
understand how the law team is used as a function within the business. Furthermore I also worked

In reality however, there were a number of times where I asked for assistance particularly regarding
some of the legal documents. In retrospect, I should have asked for more detail about certain jobs to
clarify some of the terms. Further to this I had to ensure that my progress was being monitored and
developed and this was maintained by semi regular meetings and informal conversations. Reflecting
on my first work placement, it was rare to have such meetings which often left it difficult to
understand how my skills were being developed. Macduff (2012, p. 24) supports Cooks previous point
going on to suggest that settling within the second year is seen as more advantageous as there is a
natural improvement in confidence. Despite this I still struggled to confidently operate as Midland
Heart was such a drastic difference to Savers. This oversight could have been avoided if I had
discussed the issue with either my tutor or manager to gain an insight into the correct office etiquette.
Networking One of the purposes of pursuing a work placement is to meet working people to
understand how they work. Brooks (2012) establishes that networking within your organisation could
also help an employee with future job opportunities. It was therefore important to utilise this
opportunity to gain a number of contacts in a field that I was interested in. As my previous placement
was in an organisation that I already worked for, it was difficult to find new contacts. This

Apollonian And Dionysian
The Birth of Tragedy written by Nietzsche, brings up the idea of the two gods, Apollonian and
Dionysian. This greek essence of the gods are discussed in terms of their nature and what they
represent in terms of art and culture. He talks about the rebirth of tragedy and links music to it. In
greek mythology, Apollonian and Dionysian are sons of Zeus who has different views and
characteristics. Apollonian is calm and collective while Dionysian is chaotic and disorganized.
Dionysian is considered a sensual god who is more associated with contradictions, fire, frenzy, etc.
Whereas, Apollonian is about light, eloquence and morality. This clearly shows that their views were
very distinct when it came to worldly matters. An example of

seconds long but carries a powerful message. The commercial starts off with a small child running
through what appears to be a bad neighborhood. As the commercial goes on we realize that he is not in
a bad neighborhood but just lives in abject poverty. However, it seems that he has a really strong
passion for boxing. This is shown when by the child s constant training in a worn down gym.

How Does The Stability And Instability Of Funding Shape...
How does the stability/instability of funding shape the nature of activities that international
organizations choose to engage in? How has the trend of increasing extra budgetary funds affected the
general international climate on development (issues of competition, overlapping mandates etc.)?
What are the implications of contract based funding for the culture, institutional memory and staffing
of international organizations?
Introduction
At the heart of the functional capability of every international organization (IO) is the issue of
funding. Financial sustainability remains to be one the most important elements of IOs. While funding

How the stability/instability of funding shape the nature of activities of international organizations
The funding sources for IOs are not exactly the same. While some depend on regular budgetary
contributions, others depend on voluntary contributions for the fulfillment of their mandates. In either
ways, the flow of funds could be stable or not stable. The stability or instability of these funds could
affect the nature of activities IOs choose to do in several ways: it could affect the execution of
mandates, planning and timing of programs, and sustainability. First, the flow and availability of funds
is the life blood of very IO. Even though every IO designs the nature and type program of activities
based on its mandates for a given period, the implementation of such programs are dependent on the
availability of funds. Thus, the timing of the program implementation is tied to the availability of
funds. Programs with stable funds will be carried out on time and programs with delayed or no funds
will be delayed in implementation or not carried out at all. Therefore, which programs to carry out and
when to carry them out is dependent on the stability or instability of funds. Secondly, given the fact
that the stability or instability of funds are dependent on donors, donors capitalize on it to control the
types of activities that IOs engage in. Donors therefore attach

Balance Between Sense And Sensibility In Northanger Abbey
Balance Between Sense and Sensibility in Jane Austen s Northanger Abbey
Throughout her novel, Northanger Abbey, Jane Austen integrates parody with characterization to
emphasize the necessity of a balance between sense and sensibility while reflecting a theme of the
initiation of a young woman into the complexities of adult social life. This novel can be traced back as
one of Jane Austen s earliest works. It was written in 1798, but not published until 1818, and is an
excellent example of what Austen believed a novel should not be. In the work Jane Austen s Novels
Social Change and Literary Form, Julia Prewitt Brown states The evident purpose of Northanger
Abbey is to burlesque the popular fiction of her day, to carry its conventions ... Show more content on

The first paragraph of the first chapter in the novel uses subtle Irony to depict to the reader what
Catherine Moorland was not. Catherine was not a girl with extraordinary beauty and ability of a
classic romantic heroine, but an ordinary girl who may possibly lack extraordinary beauty and ability.
In the novel, Catherine travels to Bath where she comes into contact with silly and tasteless people,
the Thorpes. This contrast makes Catherine shine brighter. Catherine also comes into contact with the
Tilneys, who were educated, well bred people with a sense of humor. Their influence helps Catherine
to develop into a sensible character, relieved of romantic notions, to become a charming wife for
Henry Tilney.
Upon introduction in the novel, Catherine Moorland reflects a character that epitomizes the
characteristic of sensibility. In the 19th century sensibility was a characteristic based on imagination,
fantasy, innocence, passion, and creative thinking. The conventions of the gothic novel overlap, in all
its forms, with sensibility, in part because it concerns a suffering protagonist. In this novel Catherine s
confusion of the world of romance with the everyday world begins innocently and is the cause of her
suffering. To relieve her suffering and become a mature adult Catherine must learn to distinguish
between illusion and reality, to be aware that the imagination has the power to enforce its own slanted
vision upon the world. Through a series of interactions with

Death Be Not Proud By John Donne
The progression of societal beliefs regarding our approach towards death is dependent upon the
changing nature of both cultural and historical contexts. In Donne s Holy Sonnet Death be not proud
he uses second person narration to address Death as thou , thee and thy , death is not considered
conceptually but anthropomorphised as the poems fundamental pride. In Death be not proud , we see
how the rumination of death is shaped by Elizabethan values. Through the subverted Petrarchan
structure and style, Donne s use of apostrophe denigrates the omnipotence of death and lowers its
statue to the level of the poet. This corresponds with contextual religious values of certainty in
external afterlife and death as a transitory stage. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Vivian s reversion to the punctuation, Death semicolon thou shalt die, is symbolic of the 1990s
literature culture wars, as Edson argues that a personal interpretation of the text is crucial to
understanding its virtues. This is seen as Donne s religious context only saw a mere pause, comma,
between life and eternal life, whereas, modern existential beliefs see this transition as more potent and
vivid, semicolon. This uncertainty can be seen through the final stage directions, the instant she is
naked and beautiful, reaching for the light, which symbolises purity, peacefulness and hope.
Therefore, we see the modern context produce an uncertain, yet uplifting approach to death. Donne s
poem, The Sunne Rising, expounds how his view of life is shaped by relationships. We see this as the
poet defies the natural order by apostrophising the Sun, Busie old foole. In Donne s context, the Sun
was seen as the centre of the natural world and the source of energy and life. Donne s irritated, jesting
tone denounces the Sun s power when compared with his lover. This is seen through the metaphorical
description, This bed thy centre is, these walls, thy sphere, which extrapolates the apotheosistic nature
of his relationship, and is

New Jim Crow Laws Essay
As of 2010, thirteen and a half percent (13 ½%) of all African Americans comprise the U.S.
population. Look back one hundred to two hundred (100 200) years ago, the African American
population has gone through strife. The real question is still pending, is it much easier for African
American during the pre Civil Rights Movement Era that now? My opinion is that it is better. The
reason why I coined my opinion is to show that there have been stops in racial caste, media creating
propaganda, and blacks advancing in parts of the world. By producing these parts, I will introduce the
idea that the African American life has evolved for the better. In the article of the New Jim Crow Laws

Neuropeptides
Neuropeptides are synthesized in the soma, the cell body of the neuron. These neuropeptides are along
with specific enzymes packed into vesicles in the Golgi apparatus. In these vesicles the neuropeptides
are transported along microtubules in the axon towards the nerve terminal. During the course of this
transportation the neuropeptides, who at this stage is only precursors of the actual neuropeptides, are
modified by the enzymes into their actual neuropeptide form. The vesicles in which the neuropeptides
are stored in once they arrive to the nerve terminal are called large dense core vesicles.
These vesicles will release the neuropeptides as a response to large stimuli, meaning stimuli which
give rise to many action potentials. The site of release is closer to the axon than the synapse and the
neuropeptides then have to diffuse toward the synaptic cleft and the ... Show more content on

The classical transmitters are instead synthesized in the axon terminal while it is only the enzymes
necessary for their synthesis that are produced in the soma and transported along the axon. These
enzymes then act on precursor peptides, which are recycled versions of the neurotransmitter, to
produce the neurotransmitter. The neurotransmitter is then packed and stored in small clear core
vesicles. Upon release the classical neurotransmitter bind to both GPCRs and ligand dependent ion
channels. Therefore only the classical transmitters, and not the neuropeptides, can give rise to
excitatory postsynaptic potential (EPSP) and inhibitory postsynaptic potential (IPSP). As the
neurotransmitter is already in the nerve terminal and is later released directly into the synaptic cleft,
the signalling is faster than that of the neuropeptides. Classical neurotransmitters can also be released
as a response to smaller stimuli, with only a few action potentials, while neuropeptides require
stronger stimuli for

The Internet and User Content Essay
In the January 18th, 2012 New York Times article The False Ideals of the Web , Jaron Lanier attempts
to take a very difficult issue one that many view in terms of black or white and find some middle
ground. Unfortunately, what he ends up doing in the article is create an either/or situation, rather than
find any middle ground. In the end we are left in the same situation that we started with. In the first
paragraph, Jaron appeals to the pathos of the reader; he assumes that the reader is of the generation
that has grown up in the digital age, thus they would agree that the most important aspect of the
internet is the people who contribute to it. However, there is no reason to ever assume that. Some
people may actually believe that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He assumes that the reader will accept his word that the legislation deals with this issue using the
mentioned method. In a way, this can be considered a bandwagon fallacy, in that we re supposed to
accept that because he and his colleagues think the bill uses draconion methods, it does in fact use
them. Without support for this statement, there is no reason to ever believe what the author has said. In
addition, the author appeals to the readers ethos, as well as an appeal to authority, in that we re
expected to accept the opinions of these people, simply because the author says we should. The author
then goes on to state, Those rare tech companies that have come out in support of SOPA are not
merely criticized but barred from industry events and subject to boycotts. We, the keepers of the flame
of free speech, are banishing people for their speech. The result is a chilling atmosphere, with people
afraid to speak their minds. It s hard to see, but this is definitely a fallacy of equivocation. The author
is comparing the corporations who wish to make it illegal to upload user content if it contains anything
they have made. Under this model, electronic musicians would not be allowed to make the music they
make, simply because they use samples from other artists. Under this model, Apple would not be
allowed to distribute their operating system, simply because they have used code from FreeBSD.

  • 2. Becoming A Mentee I have been a mentee throughout various phases of my career as well as in school. I have had great mentors who have been very open and honest about strengths and weaknesses and who have tried to guide me over the years. It has been a tremendous benefit and something I probably took for granted until I was asked to participate in a formal mentorship program at work. The mentorship committee spent a lot of time developing documentation and discussing goals and expectations for both sides which I found encouraging. The mentees and mentors were given an overview of what to expect and how to prepare for their meetings with the mentee clearly being told that they had to schedule the meetings, determine the recurrence and drive the discussion. The mentors were given guidelines on how to work with the mentees and how to encourage participation. One of the key items I would identify as fundamental for mentees to be successful is to have them develop and define a goal. The mentee must know what they expect to gain from the relationship to be able to measure and determine if it was successful. One of the main points to cover with a mentee is to ensure they understand that they are guiding their own destiny and the expectation that a mentor will have all the answers is ... The early work of Munson on microstrip antennas for use as a low profile flush mounted antennas on rockets and missiles showed that this was a practical concept for use in many antenna system problems. Different mathematical models were developed for this antenna and its applications were extended to many other fields. The number of articles published in the journal papers for the last ten years. The microstrip antennas are the first antenna designer s choice. Low dielectric constant substrates are generally preferred for maximum radiation. The conducting patch can have many shape but rectangular and circular configurations are the most commonly used configuration. A microstrip antenna is characterized by its length parameter, width parameter, input impedance, and gain and radiation patterns. Various performance parameters, mathematical calculation and Microstrip feeding technique will be discussed further through this chapter. Antennas are key components of any wireless communication system and it is a device that provides a way for radiation or receiving electromagnetic waves. IEEE standard definitions for antenna (IEEE Std 145 1983) defines antenna as a means for radiating or receiving radio wave. Figure 3.1 shows an antenna as transition device. • 7. Egalitarianism And Sexism When we talk about sexism, most of the people will think that it has disappeared when 21st century began where new thinking came to people s mind and changed the way they think.but I personally disagree with this point, nowadays, sexism still exists in our world, not only in some underdeveloped counties in Africa, but also in some well known nations such as Britain, U.S.A and many other European countries. To me it is very strange that these countries were influenced by egalitarianism way earlier than the countries in Asia or South America. Such history, however, did not completely wipe sexism out from their minds , that s why we still sometimes see news about sexism in our tv. In addition, some females become feminist in order to fight back because of sexism, in fact, females often act as a victim of sexism as they are not as strong as males and may be even considered as weak or incapable in some situations while females are actually able to finish the work just like males or even better. So I think that people especially males should stop discriminating females just because they don t seem strong, and females shall also stop doing it even the public still thinks it is rare. We can t keep our society running well without different people playing their own roles. • 8. Pre-Litigation Research Paper Pre Litigation: What Happens Before Filing a Lawsuit? Going to court is usually the last step in a long process of trying to settle a dispute. There are usually several steps taken before a lawsuit is even filed with the courts. These steps help both parties prepare for the lawsuit. It also opens up opportunities to settle the dispute without the need to go to court. Notice When one party has a complaint or dispute with another party, the first step in the process is formal notification. This often comes in the form of a notice letter sent by the injured party s attorney to the other party, his attorney, and his insurance company. This notice outlines what the dispute is about. It may also request information on insurance coverage, policy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The demand can take several forms. It may be a claim that goes to the other party s insurance company. It may be a letter going straight to the other party demanding compensation for the injury. The demand may be a simple letter or it may be a multi page document with copies of the information gathered during the investigation. Trying to Settle The formal demand usually brings an opportunity to settle the case before filing suit. In many cases, these settlement negotiations are informal, involving discussions between the attorneys, insurance representatives, and clients. It may be a time when one party makes a settlement offer. Counteroffers and settlement rejections can also happen. More formal dispute resolution solutions are also available, including mediation. With mediation, a neutral third party works with the injured party and the defendant to reach a negotiated settlement. If a case cannot be settled, the next step is to file a formal lawsuit. • 9. John Berger Ways Of Seeing Analysis In John Berger s Ways of Seeing he speaks of how the meaning of artwork is dynamic, because we cannot visit the past and truly know what each artist is thinking and feeling as he paints his work, so it changes with one s personal experience and the context in which one experiences them. He also speaks of how critics mystify artwork of the past, attempting to set in stone their personal meaning of the piece, closing the door of interpretation to anyone who reads their commentary on the piece. Who is to decide the meaning of advertisements? Or, do they hold no meaning besides the goal or monetary gain? In Berger s work, he speaks of the meaning behind a photographer s photo, and how they chose that moment in time to be captured forever. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Berger believes that the mystification of images narrows the point of view of individuals and that critics use their status to impose their opinions (Berger 147). In a way, when we view an advertisement we mystify the image, because as individuals have seen many advertisements, we impose the meaning that there is no meaning besides that of money. We see nothing behind the meaning of monetary gain, and we dismiss any other meaning that could be embedded in the photo because, with our experience we view advertisements as a way to make money and nothing more. We get this view because at one point in time within the past few decades, someone said that advertisements we a lie, that everything within them are fake and they are simply used to trick us into buying things we don t need. All that isn t necessarily false, but that bad reputation leads people to disguise the beauty in which advertisements truly hold. A large amount of the images in which society today views are reproductions, via the internet and television. Whether they are physical reproductions, or a picture or video taken of the original image, Berger believes that the reproduction of art eradicates the original meaning of many works of art. They have entered the mainstream of life over which they no longer, in themselves, have power (Berger 159). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Habeas Corpus is a Latin phrase meaning You have the body this may sound a little odd but it just means that we have a liberty and we have the right to a fair trial and we are to be presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law and juries of my peer. • 12. Heteroglossia Heteroglossia Langue and linguistic variation Bakhtin developed the notion in contrast with the structuralist account of language, which was centered in the notion of langue, that is, the systematic set of rules determining the well formedness of an expression or utterance. This concept, introduced by Saussure, emphasised the notion that the code conformed by the linguistic norms must be common to all speakers for communication to be possible. This was seen as a dangerous simplification by Bakhtin, who asserted that languages are internally divided, not simply into regional dialects, but also into many different strata, corresponding to all possible axes of social division; he thus posited a minutely nuanced variety of class , ethnia , ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He defines heteroglossia as another s speech in another s language, serving to express authorial intentions but in a refracted way. Bakhtin identifies the direct narrative of the author, rather than dialogue between characters, as the primary location of this conflict. Languages as points of view Bakhtin viewed the modern novel as a literary form best suited for the exploitation of heteroglossia, in direct contrast to epic poetry (and, in a lesser degree, poetry in general). The linguistic energy of the novel was seen in its expression of the conflict between voices through their adscription to different elements in the novel s discourse. Any language, in Bakhtin s view, stratifies into many voices: social dialects, characteristic group behavior, professional jargons, generic languages, languages of generations and age groups, tendentious languages, languages of the authorities, of various circles and of passing fashions. This diversity of voice is, Bakhtin asserts, the defining characteristic of the novel as a genre. Traditional stylistics, like epic poetry, do not share the trait of heteroglossia. In Bakhtin s words, poetry depersonalizes days in language, while prose, as we shall see, often deliberately intensifies difference between them... Extending his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the form described, lactose is indigestible by us humans; therefore it must be hydrolysed, or broken down, for our body in order to process it. Lactase catalyses this process by decreasing the energy required for hydrolysis to happen. Lactase is a digestive enzyme that catalyses the breakdown of lactose, a sugar found in milk. Some controlled variables in the experiment are the amount of water used to simulate the flooding, the amount of material the water is going through, and the temperature of the water. If the water goes through rocks/gravel, then it will be quicker with less damage because there is more space for the water to go through without dragging anything out. There was no trench shown in the material, and the only signs of flooding was that some of the rocks towards the bottom of the pile moved out a few inches, but this was only because the rocks were light enough to be moved by the water. Normally is the rocks moved at all it would only be around 3 inches, with the highest being 3.75 and the lowest 2.5. Also the water went through the rocks really quickly, with the slowest time being five seconds. The sand had thin trenches but they tended to be a lot deeper. The width of the trench was only 1.5, but the depth was .75, which compared to the depth of the dirt one which was only .25, is quite deep. The length was always between 1 and 2 inches, and would normally get thinner as the trench progressed. This is probably because the sand would soak up the water as the trench progressed. This material also took the most time to flow through, with its average speed being 10.42 seconds. This one went slowest because the air pockets in the sand are smaller. Lastly the dirt had a medium time of how quickly the water flowed through, but had the largest width and length. The average width of the trench was normally about 2.25 inches, but would get slightly thinner as it progressed towards the bottom. This change in width was nowhere near as apparent as it was with the sand trenches. These trenches tended to be kinda large, averaging in a length of 3 inches. There was a lot of extra dirt that got pulled away which you could see in the water. These trenches were only .25 inches deep, which was odd since it was the only one that you could pick out individual particles, other than the rocks since that is how they were measured. • 18. The Princess And The Frog Young children often hear many fairy tales growing up, one of the most famous is the tale of a princess kissing a frog to magically transform the frog into a prince so that they could live happily ever after. In 2009, Walt Disney and Pixar Films released The Princess and the Frog which portrays different aspects of Louisiana s history during the 1920s. The film tells the story for a young ambitious chef, Tiana, and her struggles to follow her dreams due to her race, her sex, and the time period. At the beginning of the movie, Tiana s mother, Eudora, tells her and her best friend Charlotte a story while working on a gown for Charlotte. Sometimes [the] mothers, being obligated to work and having no one at home with whom to leave their children, was the reason they brought their children to work with them (Paradise,64). The story that the two young girls are being told is about a princess kissing a frog to become a prince, to marry, and live happily ever after. Charlotte says that she would kiss one hundred frogs if she could be a princess and live happy and rich, yet Tiana takes no interest to what her mother says. Tiana says that she will never kiss a frog, for she believes she is capable of finding love without such a silly antic. In the film Mean Creek directed by Jacob Aaron Estes, the important idea of loss of innocence is very interesting as it tells the story and shows us how quickly things can change. The director shows us this through the way the characters change during the burial of George, the word snap written in a tree and the guilt felt by Millie and Sam. Firstly I found the important idea of loss of innocence interesting during the burial of George as this is when they lose their innocence. This Quote foreshadows the death of George. As a viewer tension builds u as we wait the events that link to the death. After the death of George, Millie engraves the word Snap into a tree. This is significant as it shows how life can change as fast as the snap of the fingers. A foley effect is used on the scratching of the knife on the tree to show Millie s anger and how she feels they have not only turned flipped there life upside down but they took a life and destroyed Georges relatives lives. The foley effect turns your attention the Millie as the viewer anticipates what she is writing .we now see how just 24 hours before they were all living a normal happy life but now they are emotionally distort and stumped for a conclusion of what to do. The word snap makes the important idea of loss of innocence interesting as it shows how fast they have totally lost their innocence. I was not thrilled by either story and found that they did not keep my interest and failed to entertain me. With both stories, I tended to get lost in the scene or setting and found myself rereading sections. One of the stories I had to rereading to make sure I really understood the full story. Two characteristics of a successful short stories are the story tends to begin and end abruptly and limited number of characters. Using these two stories I will analyze them to see if they meet the short story criteria. The Last Speaker of the Language does not start off as an abruptly as a short story could. The daughter is on a ladder finding small vodka bottles above her mother s kitchen cabinets, a hiding place that her mother uses. There is no abruptness within the first two paragraphs. I would think that an abrupt story would have dramatic changes or some sort of wild tale was starting. Something that would make the reader say, whoa what is going in here? The Other Place also started off with a slower start. It did however have a more interesting and dramatic beginning as The Last Speaker of the Language did. Aspects of the music, that have been there since its conception, such as improvisation, make it forever subject to change, which is what the music needs. The jazz music that is being created today is far from what the public expects to hear in music. It will not be popular, but it stands a very good chance of being excellent music. Change in jazz is inevitable because, like language, communities change, provide new contexts that require new expressions, or find new ways of doing things (Nicholson 71). There will always be people who appreciate jazz s complexity more than the music being played on the radio or the artists selling the most records. How the stability/instability of funding shape the nature of activities of international organizations The funding sources for IOs are not exactly the same. While some depend on regular budgetary contributions, others depend on voluntary contributions for the fulfillment of their mandates. In either ways, the flow of funds could be stable or not stable. The stability or instability of these funds could affect the nature of activities IOs choose to do in several ways: it could affect the execution of mandates, planning and timing of programs, and sustainability. First, the flow and availability of funds is the life blood of very IO. Even though every IO designs the nature and type program of activities based on its mandates for a given period, the implementation of such programs are dependent on the availability of funds. Thus, the timing of the program implementation is tied to the availability of funds. Programs with stable funds will be carried out on time and programs with delayed or no funds will be delayed in implementation or not carried out at all. Therefore, which programs to carry out and when to carry them out is dependent on the stability or instability of funds. This novel can be traced back as one of Jane Austen s earliest works. It was written in 1798, but not published until 1818, and is an excellent example of what Austen believed a novel should not be. In the 19th century sensibility was a characteristic based on imagination, fantasy, innocence, passion, and creative thinking. In Donne s Holy Sonnet Death be not proud he uses second person narration to address Death as thou , thee and thy , death is not considered conceptually but anthropomorphised as the poems fundamental pride. In Death be not proud , we see how the rumination of death is shaped by Elizabethan values. Through the subverted Petrarchan structure and style, Donne s use of apostrophe denigrates the omnipotence of death and lowers its statue to the level of the poet. This corresponds with contextual religious values of certainty in external afterlife and death as a transitory stage. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Vivian s reversion to the punctuation, Death semicolon thou shalt die, is symbolic of the 1990s literature culture wars, as Edson argues that a personal interpretation of the text is crucial to understanding its virtues. This is seen as Donne s religious context only saw a mere pause, comma, between life and eternal life, whereas, modern existential beliefs see this transition as more potent and vivid, semicolon. This uncertainty can be seen through the final stage directions, the instant she is naked and beautiful, reaching for the light, which symbolises purity, peacefulness and hope. Therefore, we see the modern context produce an uncertain, yet uplifting approach to death. Donne s poem, The Sunne Rising, expounds how his view of life is shaped by relationships. We see this as the poet defies the natural order by apostrophising the Sun, Busie old foole. In Donne s context, the Sun was seen as the centre of the natural world and the source of energy and life. Donne s irritated, jesting tone denounces the Sun s power when compared with his lover. In these vesicles the neuropeptides are transported along microtubules in the axon towards the nerve terminal. During the course of this transportation the neuropeptides, who at this stage is only precursors of the actual neuropeptides, are modified by the enzymes into their actual neuropeptide form. The vesicles in which the neuropeptides are stored in once they arrive to the nerve terminal are called large dense core vesicles. These vesicles will release the neuropeptides as a response to large stimuli, meaning stimuli which give rise to many action potentials.
