The slides from my talk at the Future of 5G Summit, held by the Connected Digital Economy Catapult (Digital Catapult) in London in November 2014. I cover industry perceptions of what 5G networking will look like, e.g. bandwidth, latency and massification factors. I also look at what Jisc is doing to help accelerate this agenda, through connectivity (the Janet Reach scheme) and support for asset sharing through our Kit-Catalogue equipment sharing database pilot.
This document summarizes key insights from an Ericsson Technology Review article on facilitating online trust with blockchains. It discusses how blockchains can establish trust without centralized authorities by using distributed consensus protocols. It differentiates between public blockchains like Bitcoin that use proof-of-work and private blockchains used within organizations that employ identities and access management. While blockchains remove the need for trusted third parties, their consensus mechanisms have drawbacks around delay, throughput and costs. Alternative technologies like hashgraphs aim to address these issues to enable distributed trust.
Billions of connected devices and things. Billions of people. 5G will provide connectivity for all of these things and people as well as businesses and industry, bringing benefit to society. Operating machinery in hazardous environments from a remote control will be enabled through near-zero latency communication links that enable real-time video. Billions of video-enabled devices will be able to share bandwidth-hungry content. These are just a few applications that illustrate what 5G will be designed for.

5G is expected to be commercially deployed starting in 2020, with some limited services possible in 2018. It will provide significantly higher data rates and lower latency compared to 4G. The first widespread 5G application may be fixed wireless access to homes and businesses. Key 5G technologies include network slicing, use of high-frequency millimeter wave spectrum, and support for critical low-latency services. Various industries like automotive, manufacturing, and energy are seen as promising verticals for 5G, but costs and specialized requirements may slow widespread adoption in some sectors. Harmonization of 5G standards and spectrum globally will be important to drive development and deployment.
5G New Radio has already evolved in important ways since the 3GPP standardized Release 15 in late 2018. The significant enhancements in Releases 16 and 17 are certain to play a critical role in expanding both the availability and the applicability of 5G NR in both industry and public services in the near future.
This Ericsson Technology Review article summarizes the most notable new developments in releases 16 and 17, grouped into two categories: enhancements to existing features and features that address new verticals and deployment scenarios. This analysis and our insights about the future beyond Release 17 is an important component of our work to help mobile network operators and other stakeholders better understand and plan for the many new 5G NR opportunities that are on the horizon.
Ericsson Technology Review: Simplifying the 5G ecosystem by reducing architec...Ericsson
One critical aspect of a successful 5G deployment is the mobile network operator’s ability to support user equipment, radio network, core network and management products that are manufactured by a multitude of device and network equipment vendors. The multiple connectivity options in 3GPP architecture for 5G have created several possible deployment alternatives.
The latest Ericsson Technology Review article argues that there is a significant risk of ecosystem fragmentation if too many different connectivity options are deployed. After considering all the options, the authors conclude that a deployment approach based on options 3 and 2 will reduce network upgrade cost and time, simplify interoperability between networks and devices, and enable a faster scaling of the 5G ecosystem.

German car giants Volkswagen and BMW have confirmed massive Industry 4.0 investments, and firmed up their interests in private industrial 5G as a means to factory automation and slicker production.
The world is currently witnessing the rise of many mission-critical applications such as telesurgery, intelligent transportation, industry automation, virtual reality and augmented reality, vehicular communications, etc. Some of these applications will be enabled by the fifth-generation of cellular networks (5G), which will provide the required ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC). However, guaranteeing this stringent reliability and end-to-end latency requirements continues to prove to be quite challenging, due to the significant shift in paradigms required in both theoretical fundamentals of wireless communications as well as design principles [B1]. For instance, the fourth generation of cellular networks (4G) currently provides an unpredictable latency that can range from 50ms to several seconds, with block error rates as high as 10-1. On the other hand, the industry is demanding URLLC provide 1 ms end-to-end latency and overall packet loss probabilities as low as 10^-5 - 10^-7 . Motivated by the above, in this tutorial, we cover the challenges and potential solutions for 5G and beyond 5G to support URLLC, in terms of error control coding improving reliability, channel access protocols for reducing latency, and multi-connectivity for improving network availability.
To meet the new connectivity requirements of the emerging IoT segment, 3GPP has taken evolutionary steps on both the network side and the device side. As a result, the 3GPP standardizing several technologies, including Extended Coverage GSM (EC-GSM), LTE-M and NB-IoT.
LTE-M, NB-IoT and EC-GSM are all superior solutions to meet IoT requirements as a family of solutions, and can complement each other based on technology availability, use case requirements and deployment scenarios. The evolution for these technologies is shown in figure #5. Technical studies and normative work for the support of Machine Type Communication (MTC) as part of 3GPP LTE specifications for RAN began in 3GPP Release 12 and are continuing with the goals of developing features optimized for devices with MTC traffic.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

- ICT-53-2020: 5G PPP – 5G for CAM (closes 13 November)
- Cascade Funding
- The work programme is the sole authoritative text!
- The following is a summary, contact me for more information and support…
14. ICT-41-2020: Innovations for verticals with third party
services
- Innovation actions, €4-6M, €49M budget (minimum 8 projects to be funded)
- Challenge:
- Software networks provide high flexibility through implementation of virtual network
functions (VNFs). VNF's may be chained across several domains to create Network
Applications (NetApps) tailored to the requirements of specific tenants
- This requires open platforms that provide access to networks resources which can then be
used to develop NetApps supporting requirements and developments from specific vertical
sectors.
- Scope:
- Experimentation facilities able to provide enhanced experimentation infrastructures on top
of which third party experimenters (e.g. SMEs) will have the opportunity to test their
applications tailored to specific vertical use cases
- To create 5G open source repositories for wide use and towards standards development
- Typical vertical use cases: automated mobility, smart factories and industry 4.0, energy,
healthcare, media.
15. ICT-41-2020: Innovations for verticals with third party
services
- Expected impact:
- Testing and validation of NetApp solutions on top of a 5G virtualised experimental
environment
- NetApps secure interoperability beyond vendor-specific implementation across multiple
domains, availability of standards or reference implementations
- Open-source repository of network applications that can be further leveraged by other
developers
- Creation of third party markets for start-ups and SMEs. 50% of SMEs are targeted for this
action
- Relevant 5G PPP KPI: Service creation time in minutes
- Results that may be appropriate for transfer towards an incubator or a start up, either within
the project or outside of the projects in follow up actions.
16. ICT-41-2020: Innovations for verticals with third party
services

• Building a proposal:
• Proposals contain Excellence, Impact and Implementation parts. Excellence needs to highlight
beyond SoTA research contributions. Impact needs to align with the expectations of the particular
call. Project implementation plan is also very important, aim to achieve ‘tangible’ outputs.
• ‘Tangible’ outputs – high impact in 3GPP/ ETSI standardisation, outputs directed specifically
towards certain industries (5G verticals), software/channel models widely made available, IPR,
internal exploitation plans within companies, white papers /research papers.
• A good consortium needs a mix of large industries, academia, research institutes and SMEs. ICT
proposers’ days are a good place to pitch ideas and find project partners.
• Work within a project:
• In project reviews, outcomes are measured against what was promised in the proposal. So always
plan to deliver (at least) what is in the proposal –implementation plan needs to be well executed.
• Key project members are expected to contribute to the 5GPPP TB/ SB/ WGs.
• Visible presence in EuCNC is expected- as a key outlet for EU project dissemination.
