This document discusses app_mongodb, an Asterisk application that allows interaction between an Asterisk PBX and MongoDB. It provides a prototype implementation with around 300 lines of code that allows basic operations like replacing a caller ID name by looking up the caller's number in a MongoDB phonebook. With further development, it could enable capabilities like real-time accounting for billing and fraud detection by accessing MongoDB datasets, as well as integrating the PBX with CRM systems through MongoDB. Resources are provided for the app_mongodb codebase and tutorials on MongoDB and Asterisk.
This document discusses error management in ZIO compared to Future. It begins with an overview of ZIO and Future effects before comparing how each handles errors. Key differences noted are that Future throws errors away on a side channel while ZIO composes errors. The document recommends best practices for error handling in ZIO like extending exceptions in sealed traits and avoiding reflexive logging. It concludes by discussing how ZIO enables next-generation debugging by tracking fibers and continuations during asynchronous execution.
Commands, events, queries - three types of messages that travel through your application. Some originate from the web, some from the command-line. Your application sends some of them to a database, or a message queue. What is the ideal infrastructure for an application to support this on-going stream of messages? What kind of architectural design fits best?
This talk provides answers to these questions: we take the *hexagonal* approach to software architecture. We look at messages, how they cross boundaries and how you can make steady communication lines between your application and other systems, like web browsers, terminals, databases and message queues. You will learn how to separate the technical aspects of these connections from the core behavior of your application by implementing design patterns like the *command bus*, and design principles like *dependency inversion*.
The document discusses principles and best practices for writing clean code, including using meaningful names, separating commands and queries, avoiding repetition, using exceptions instead of return codes, and following object-oriented principles like polymorphism instead of switch statements on objects. It provides examples of good and bad code for concepts like single responsibility, primitive obsession, and refused bequest. The overall goal is to write code that is readable, maintainable, and extendable.

The document discusses the Uniform Access Principle, which states that all services offered by a module should be available through a uniform notation that does not reveal whether they are implemented through storage or computation. It provides examples of how different languages do or do not follow this principle, and explains that following this principle helps avoid breaking client code when implementation details change. It also discusses how Scala supports the Uniform Access Principle for parameterless methods.
Tornado is a Python web framework and asynchronous networking library. It is a scalable, non-blocking web server that allows applications to handle multiple requests simultaneously using a single thread. Some key features include lightweight and fast templates, asynchronous request handlers, and integrations with databases, caches and other services. Tornado is best suited for building real-time web services and can be used alongside other front-end web servers.
Clean code is code that is elegant, efficient, focused, and readable. It should do one thing well. Bad code lacks these traits. Some heuristics for writing clean code include using descriptive naming, short methods that do one thing, avoiding comments when possible, consistent formatting, following object-oriented design principles like the Law of Demeter, and properly handling errors through exceptions.
