Putting the client in control of their own feelings of comfort or discomfort, by making them transparent and adjustable, can provide the confidence boost that allows them to take tentative steps into greater discomfort.
This document provides guidance on using silence effectively in coaching sessions. It explains that silence can be positive if the client makes progress towards their goals and sees their progress, or negative if the client reinforces negative thoughts. Coaches should evaluate if silence was positive based on the results and thoughts shared after the silence. When in doubt, coaches should err on the side of talking more to avoid scaring clients away. There are no strict rules and coaches need experience to learn how to best use silence with different clients.
While persuasion can provide initial motivation for change, it has limited ability to create lasting change. True change is a process that takes time, thought, effort and consistent action. People are often persuaded to make resolutions to improve themselves through motivational speeches, but the motivation often fades quickly without action. For real change to occur, one must overcome doubts and feel internally convinced of the need and value of change, rather than being persuaded by external forces. Moments when people turn their lives around are often the culmination of long struggles, not sudden persuasive events, representing a personal readiness for change.
The document discusses various counseling techniques that can be used to provide effective counseling. Some of the key techniques mentioned include active listening skills like paraphrasing and reflecting to ensure understanding, asking open-ended questions to get more details from clients, focusing on a client's strengths to build confidence, and assessing a client's needs to determine the appropriate changes and goals for counseling. The document emphasizes that establishing trust and a supportive environment is important, as well as discussing expectations and providing genuine feedback to help clients grow and benefit from the counseling process.
This document discusses how fitness trainers can transition to becoming life coaches. It argues that fitness trainers already possess many of the core skills of life coaches, such as helping clients set goals, overcoming obstacles, and providing support and motivation. Both professions involve assessing a client's needs, creating a plan to meet goals, and coaching the client through the process. The document provides examples comparing how a financial life coach and fitness trainer might work with clients. It concludes that fitness trainers are well-positioned to expand their services and apply their coaching skills to other areas of their clients' lives beyond just physical fitness.

This document discusses emotional intelligence (EQ) and its importance. It defines EQ as the ability to understand, use, and manage one's own emotions in positive ways. The four key aspects of EQ are described as self-management, self-awareness, social awareness, and relationship management. Each of these is then further explained. The document also discusses why EQ is important for success in life, relationships, school, and work. It provides examples of quick ways to relieve stress using one's senses and gives actions one can take to improve their emotional intelligence.
This document provides information about Mind/Body Alignments performed by Shannon Tran, PhD. A Mind/Body Alignment is a quick, painless procedure that balances the left and right hemispheres of the brain to replace unhealthy, negative beliefs with empowering beliefs that support goals and well-being. Benefits include improved self-esteem, relationships, health, prosperity, and body image. Alignments work by muscle testing to identify unconscious beliefs blocking success and replacing them. This differs from traditional therapy which addresses conscious patterns, while alignments target hidden unconscious beliefs. A self-directed change program is available for those not ready for a full alignment.

The document summarizes and compares two counseling techniques: solution-focused therapy and reality therapy.
Solution-focused therapy focuses on the present and future, using techniques like the miracle question to help clients envision preferred futures without their problems. It explores exceptions to problems and strengths. The technique has strengths like establishing clear goals and potential life improvements, but can be brief which may limit effectiveness.
Reality therapy emphasizes meeting psychological needs and personal responsibility. Its techniques include modeling, humor, confrontation, role-playing and involvement. It is concrete and can be evaluated for effectiveness. However, it focuses only on behavior and may depend too much on the counselor. Both techniques have benefits but also limitations.
Therapy is a process that takes time and dedication from both the client and therapist. The goal is to understand how one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected. Through multiple counseling sessions over weeks, the therapist and client work to identify patterns and thought processes contributing to problems. By analyzing thoughts and challenging irrational ones, therapy helps clients gain self-awareness and confidence while learning coping skills to apply outside of sessions. The end result is clients enjoying improved mental well-being and relationships.
Attendees will gain insight into the stigma that is attached to individuals who have dual diagnosis and criminal justice involvement, as well as, the importance of instilling power and hope to the individual. They will increase knowledge of the stages of change and utilizing motivational interviewing techniques to assist the individual through their path of recovery from mental illness, substance abuse, and criminal justice involvement.

This document discusses preparing clients for treatment and selecting appropriate intervention options based on the client's needs, goals, and context. It covers topics like client motivation, resistance to change, and brief therapeutic approaches like cognitive-behavioral therapy and solution-focused brief therapy. Motivational interviewing aims to help clients resolve ambivalence toward change through empathy, awareness of discrepancies, and supporting self-efficacy. Building coping skills also empowers clients to make positive changes.
The document discusses how to effectively use affirmations for positive change. It explains that affirmations should not be seen as "magical incantations" but should instead be used to change one's inner beliefs and feelings. It provides guidelines for writing effective affirmations, such as identifying a clear goal and making the affirmation feel good to say. Regular, consistent recitation of affirmations is important to see results. Common challenges like trying to change too much too fast or having inconsistent practice are also outlined.

Counselling involves a trained professional helping a client address difficulties through establishing a relationship, assessing problems, setting goals, providing interventions, and evaluating progress. There are various types of counselling depending on the issue, including mental health counselling, substance abuse counselling, career counselling, marriage counselling, rehabilitation counselling, and spiritual counselling. The counselling process typically involves building trust, understanding the problem, creating a plan to address it, taking action, and determining when counselling is no longer needed.
Solution-focused brief therapy focuses on solutions rather than problems and uses the client's strengths to set realistic goals and safety plans. It emphasizes collaborating with the client to uncover their positive intentions and formulate specific, constructive goals defined by what they want, rather than avoiding. Scaling questions are used to jointly assess risk and determine the necessary safety actions between the client and therapist.

For example, replacing "I can't do this" with "I am capable of succeeding." While simple, affirmations have helped many achieve goals by shifting inner dialogue from failure-focused to success-oriented. The lesson encourages writing 10 personal affirmations and reading them five times daily, especially when negative thoughts arise, to cultivate a mindset that enables reaching one's full potential.

It then outlines 21 strategies for reducing stress during the workday through mindfulness practices like conscious breathing. A story is shared about a physician who used green dots as reminders to take a mindful breath and relax his shoulders 100 times in a day, which helped transform his experience of stress at work. The article advocates for using everyday cues in the workplace to remind oneself to be mindful.

Empathy Is a Stress Response - Choose Compassion insteadAlex Clapson
Research shows that empathy is a whole-body experience: We mirror each other’s physiology alongside the emotion. Negative states, whether it is pain, anger, or anxiety, create high activation & arousal in the body, so when you empathize with someone stressed, you become stressed, too. This is why so many caregivers experience burnout.

Why people crave feedback - & why we're afraid to give it.pdfAlex Clapson
We all like to think of ourselves as someone who would give someone constructive feedback, but the study suggests that even in a low-cost situation, most people don’t. People overestimate the negative consequences giving feedback for themselves, as well as underestimate the benefits for the other person.
Microsoft recently reported that in the spring of 2022, the number of videoenabled Teams meetings per week more than doubled globally for the average user
since the start of the pandemic. And there was no evidence of a reversal.
That one question — What did you learn? — changed the way that I view my own missteps — with more compassion & understanding — & how I treat others when they make mistakes. As my experience shows, by making psychological safety a priority, leaders set up their teams for success now & long into the future.
"...A Coach is someone who tells you what you don't want to hear so you can see
what you don't want to see so you can be what you always wanted to be."
Stop Asking for Feedback - Ask for advice insteadAlex Clapson
Advice-giving leads one to think about future actions that the person in need of guidance could take. As such, when asked to give advice, people are more likely to think critically & specifically about strategies the person could use to improve.
Why we need to change the language that we use in relation to allegationsAlex Clapson
The key message is that we ought to stop using the word Disclosure,
unless there has been a Finding of Fact hearing carried out by the court.
We risk all our efforts gathering evidence for proceedings to be
disregarded if we (as expert witnesses) continue to use the incorrect
terminology.
Trust Recovery in the Team by David Clutterbuck.pdfAlex Clapson
Once trust is broken in a team, it is hard to recover. Yet the requirement to collaborate remains as strongly as ever.
If they learn from the breakdown of that relationship, they become a wiser person, better able to trust and be trusted.
Building Psychological Safety is the key to rebuilding trust.
Why Traditional Parenting Logic Doesnt WorkAlex Clapson
Traditional parenting logic is all about rewards and consequences. Good parents use these methods with their children all the time with excellent results. But, what happens when good people are raising a child that has a significant history of trauma?
This brief article offers some practical approaches.
Action Learning focuses on the experience, feelings, & insights of the individual. Rather than jumping to solve a problem as quickly as possible, Action Learning enables deeper enquiry, & results in deeper understanding.
Why walking through the countryside 'tames' our brainAlex Clapson
Exposure to nature decreases amygdala activity & has beneficial effects on stress-related brain regions. This suggests that walking in the countryside buffers the detrimental effects of city life. And, in turn, it potentially acts as a preventive measure against the development of some mental disorders.
Where companies go wrong with Learning & Development by Steve Glaveski -HBRAlex Clapson
Organizations spent $359 billion globally on training in 2016, but was it worth it?
Not only is most of the training in today’s companies ineffective, but the purpose, timing, & content of training is flawed. Want to see eyes glaze over quicker than you can finish this sentence? Mandate that busy employees attend a training session on “business writing skills”, or “conflict resolution”, or some other such course with little alignment to their needs. Like lean manufacturing & the lean start-up before it, lean learning supports the adaptability that gives organizations a competitive advantage in today’s market. It’s about learning the core of what you need to learn, applying it to real-world situations immediately, receiving immediate feedback & refining your understanding, & then repeating the cycle. To begin practicing lean learning, organizations need to move from measuring credits earned to measuring business outcomes created. Lean learning ensures that employees not only learn the right thing, at the right time, & for the right reasons, but also that they retain what they learn.
Negative Mental States Become Negative Neural Traits, by Debbie HamptonAlex Clapson
“Your brain is like Velcro for negative experiences but Teflon for positive ones.” Even though the negativity bias is great for ensuring survival, it’s lousy at promoting happiness, peace, fulfilling relationships, & long-term physical & mental health.
This brief article shares a method to alter the way in which our brain focuses to much on the negative, to the detriment of the positive.
Feedback is a gift that you give to the recipient. If you think that it matters enough to say something about the way in which someone has behaved, then you should be concerned to see that it is both given & received in the best possible way. If you bear the following four points in mind when giving feedback, then they may help to ensure that your message is effectively delivered.

Getting comfortable with discomfort, by Professor David Clutterbuck
1. WHAT’S THE RIGHT LEVEL OF DISCOMFORT?
Human beings initiate change when they feel discomfort or
dissatisfaction. So, in principle, a coaching or mentoring
conversation that doesn’t involve some level of discomfort is likely
to lead to less significant change than one that does. However, we
also tend to avoid discomfort, especially if it is elevated to become
pain. We also tend to avoid causing suffering to other people. So,
one of the key skills of a coach or mentor is to stimulate just
enough discomfort to enable the other person to be productively
curious.
Pretty much everything I have read around this topic focuses on
how the coach can calibrate the level of challenge they think the
client can take. It’s common for coaches to push harder and harder
until discomfort becomes pain, then throttle back. Yet, there’s a
much simpler solution – ask the client!
