I began my placement in the In Patient Unit (IPU), shadowing the clinical ward manager and
nurses, as well as accompanying the consultant on ward rounds.
Ambulance clinicians often do not know their patients, so to observe a patient discussing their
treatment allowed me to gain a deeper insight into their feelings and wishes behind their decision.
This was eloquently expressed with ...there s no point being alive if you don t feel you are by a
particular patient in regards to their pain relief regime.
By spending time in IPU, I hoped to gain a better understanding of the process of death from
recognising the final hours of life, death, and communicating with the family. A patient was
identified to me by the consultant on ward rounds as approaching death. I was asked to observe the
signs from the patient, so these could be discussed with the doctor in depth. Some of the signs
identified were a cachexic appearance, terminal agitation, Cheyne stokes respiration and reduced
alertness. Over the next few hours the patient was monitored closely until they died that afternoon.

In the ghost story film The Others , an unnerving atmosphere is set straight away. It begins with
cheerful, but strange music, and then a woman is shown screaming, making you wonder what has
just occurred.
This is the perfect beginning for a novel under the ghost story genre.
Further on into the film, we learn that the children who live in the house are ultra sensitive to any
bright light. This adds to the strangeness of the story, possibly scaring the viewer and making them
believe that the characters are quite strange.
The majority of all ghost stories are set in the winter months because the weather is bad and when
it is like this, bad things usually happen. The main character usually gets themselves into a spot of
bother due to either the torrential rain, snow or a storm. It is highly unlikely for a ghost story to be
set in sunny or cheerful surroundings. It is the dark, dismal and eerie atmosphere that adds to the
scariness.
In both The Others and Susan Hill s The Woman in Black, death is a key factor in the story line.
Dying is always used because if somebody had not died, there would be no ghost to haunt the major

history many countries have sought to secure this vital interest through the creation of secessionist
movements. However not all of these movements are successful in quantifying the goal of
autonomy. This paper aims to examine secessionism; the causes of secessionist sentiment as well as
factors that result in success or failure via the analysis of secessionist movements in Indonesia and
China supplemented by references to Scotland and Catalonia. The dynamic of secessionist
movements can be attributed to four general elements: the identity of the seceding community, the
territorial claims of the seceding community, the leadership of the seceding community and the
discontent of the seceding community. For any given secessionist movement these elements are

focused on the harms on the family s children and the child close to being hit, rather than the

Word about the Money Pit has spread since its discovery and people from all over North America

The piano music becomes rapidly more passionate, and then breaks off suddenly in mid phrase
(Stoppard, 85). Immediately before this quote, Stoppard writes that there are now four hands
present on the piano, rather than the usual two hands. The music became more intense over time,
