Project Report On Green Water Management
The traditional water resources management mainly refers to the management of the blue water, but
the green water that closely related to food security is ignored (Li Yin 2014). Green water
management was first put forward by the ISRIC World Soil Information etc., which designed to
improve water production efficiency by green water management measures to achieve the purpose of
eliminating the flood and drought disasters (Li Yin 2014). Green water management measures
including stone line, mulching, forest management, contour tillage, bench terraces and etc. (Li Yin
2014). The core of green water management measures is to establish a soil water reservoir , by
improving the soil infiltration rate to cut down the rainstorm runoff and ... Show more content on

In contrast, water resources planners have often trivialized green water management in rain fed
agriculture (Liu, Zehnder, Yang 2009). Green water management often comes in the form of effective
use of rainfall (Liu, Zehnder, Yang 2009). Green Water management has great conservation potential.
For example, according to Liu, Zehnder, Yang (209), strengthening rainfall management could
possibly double or even quadruple maize yields in sub Saharan Africa. Rainwater harvesting is a
promising approach for green water management in the semiarid tropics of Asia and Africa (Liu,
Zehnder, Yang 2009). Experiments with rainwater harvesting increased yield by a factor of 2 to 3 in
Burkina Faso, Kenya, Niger, Sudan and Tanzania as compared to the current yield levels (Liu,
Zehnder, Yang 2009). Additional spending in many of the rain fed areas allowed more poor people to
rise above the poverty line than would be expected with investments in irrigation infrastructure (Liu,
Zehnder, Yang 2009). Green water management is not only limited to infrastructure and management
technologies, as biotechnological advances can also be helpful (Liu, Zehnder, Yang 2009). For
example, a hybrid New Rice for Africa, which was developed to grow in the uplands of West Africa,
produces more than 50% more grain than current varieties when cultivated in traditional

Alice In Yorkland
The Cheshire cat
In Alice in Wonderland there are various characters. All with different personalities. Also all the
characters are admirable. But the Cheshire cat is the most admirable. The Cheshire cat is the most
admirable character because he listens to Alice, he teaches Alice the rules of Wonderland, and he gives
Alice some insights.
In the story the Cheshire cat is the only one who listens to Alice. In chapter eight pages ninety one to
ninety three. The Cheshire cat asked Alice how she liked the queen. And he didn t just wait for her to
say a little or a lot. He listened to all what Alice had to say. And no other character did that.
The Cheshire cat helped Alice with his remarks. That helped Alice because it teaches her the rules of

Alzheimer s Disease In Nursing Home
In the United States there are approximately 15,700 nursing homes. These facilities are responsible for
providing long term care to a large percent of the elderly population in our country. Many families and
individuals rely on care from these facilities to ensure that they are in a safe, caring environment
where their medical needs are fulfilled. Unfortunately, many seniors are not only being neglected, but
are being mistreated, misdiagnosed and receiving inappropriate medical care. Specifically, In
Massachusetts, there is a widespread epidemic concerning the use of antipsychotic medications in the
elderly in nursing homes. Antipsychotic medications are major tranquilizers that are used in people
with psychological disorders referred to as psychosis. Patients suffering from these conditions hear
voices, see things that are not there, and have a difficult time being in touch with reality. Diseases such

Analysis Of The Film Powder
Powder is an albino teenage boy who was very intelligent and shunned after the death of his last
relative. After the death, people began to judge powder, not even knowing what he looked like or the
kind of person he was. His special abilities make him an outcast. In the readings, it says, The stranger
in town becomes shrouded with suspension. Every action is scrutinized. Every inaction is a sign of
guilt. The writer s argument is, don t judge a book by its cover.
The Screen writer and director of the film is Victor Salva. He is a writer and director of over twenty
short and long films before he graduated from high school. According to IMDb, the movie Powder
was his first big studio picture. It received a lot of critical acclaims and was top ten of the year several
times. Article Bio states, Professionally his career started from the year 1986 and within today s
context of time he is able to obtain successful position within the industry. After his biological father
left the family he was brought up by stepfather who often whose to get drunk and disturb the family
mostly by physical abuse.
After the death of one of his grandparents, he is discovered and sent to state home where he has
trouble fitting in. His unusual appearance and abilities caused the people in the town to mock and fear
him. Sheriff Barnum s wife, Emma is sick and in a coma and sheriff is unsure of what he should to
help her. Jessie asks Powder to pay Emma a visit to see if he could help. He touches Emma and shares
her thoughts with sheriff. It becomes clear to Powder that he will fit in with the others, so he runs
away and goes back home. Had they not judged him, they would be able to see the good and potential
in him. The writer/director wants the audience to think that our judgements and criticism shields us
from seeing the good and beauty in someone or something. His point is that we only perceive what is
in front of us. We as people are afraid of strangers because we taught to. The word stranger has a
series of definitions. According to Dictionary.com, A stranger can be a person with whom one has had
no acquaintance, a newcomer in a place or locality. An outsider, or a person who is not a member of

Essay on Brian Friel s Translations
Brian Friel s Translations
Brian Friel s play Translations was the first production of the Field Day Theatre Company in Derry in
1980, which Friel co founded with Stephen Rea. It describes the beginning of the process of
Anglicization in a relatively remote Gaelic speaking area during the 1833 Survey of Ireland, in which
the English mapped Ireland, both culturally and geographically. Years of concerted anglicizing of the
Irish by the British early in the 19th century led to the widespread fall into disuse of the native Gaelic
tongue. National schools teaching exclusively in English began to open during the Survey of Ireland,
and English culture encroached rapidly into Ireland. William Butler Yeats and Douglas Hyde write

Hyde s speech argues that the Irish had by that point indiscriminately adopted all that was English
with little thought as to its value, that the Irish had [ceased] to be Irish without becoming English. 2
He criticizes those Irish who claim to hate British dominance, yet speak only English, anglicize their
Irish names, and remain ignorant of Gaelic literature. His central view is that the Gaelic language is
the most important aspect of an Irish identity distinct to that of the British, and that only a return to
Ireland s native language can halt the process of Anglicization. However, he is careful not to make the
claim that nothing English is of value, but emphasizes the necessity of not neglecting that which is
essentially Irish.
The history of Ireland is one of early scholasticism and rich culture in times when the rest of Europe
had less of a literary and artistic tradition. By the time of Hyde s speech, the nation had become one of
the least studious and most un literary 3 countries of the area, and he claims that the fault lies in a
divergence from the right path. 4 Progressive Anglicization has led the Irish to forget their own culture
and its traditions. The British claim that because the Irish have forgotten much of their language and
customs, they should be content as an integral part of the United Kingdom, and

Effective Team Work
Effective Teamwork 11/30/2015 SOC/110 Professor Rowell
An effective team has strong leadership where the team leader not only recognizes what they bring to
the team but what each team member brings as well. A strong leader protects their team and doesn t
have a hidden agenda. Respect is a very important characteristic of an effective team because if
members of the team disrespect each other and put down team member s ideas, productivity could
possibly slow down because team member s willingness to contribute ideas and solutions might

personality, your internal dimensions, and external dimensions. Your core personality is your unique

you can t control or change about yourself, your age, race, or ethnicity. External dimensions are based

The Rio Grande´s Controversial Situation
The Rio Grande
Many people think that having a river near their city can always be good as they can make a good
usage of the river, just like San Antonio made their river very profitable. What people never think is
what problems or controversies the river can create. Almost always a river may have its advantages
and disadvantages and it is no different with the Rio Grande. The Rio Grande is not as profitable
because two countries own the river. Instead if it was own by only one country then the river would be
more useful. The Rio Grande creates many problems between the United States and Mexican
Government, it is also very useful for both governments and for human beings, the water itself has
many issues, and should the water not be used anymore.
Many problems arise do to the Rio Grande between governments especially, between El Paso and
Ciudad Juarez. Although there have been several treaties concerning this river, one government is
never happy and always wants a bigger part of the river. Both governments believe the river only
belongs to one country, that is because they are greedy and just do not want to share the water when
they believe they should be the owner of all the river. For example, in El Paso and Juarez the water
should be split in half, but instead El Paso takes nearly all of the water. Before, Juarez would get most
of the water even though El Paso did get a great quantity. A few years back El Paso decided to
construct a path that would lead all the water to

Corruption In Elizabethan England
Why do you think people during the Elizabethan era were so intrigued by the simple, almost boring
life of a shepherd? At the time, England teemed with crime and disease, and people were enamored
with the idea of the lovesick shepherds in rural settings. By tradition, the pastoral poem renounced
corruption found in urban areas and returned the reader to the simplicity of nature. In 16th century
London, the courtiers and many city dwellers were enjoying foreign luxuries and merchandise. The
pastoral poem created a realm different than the courtly pleasures with which they were familiar and

Essay about Dorothea Dix
Known as an American philanthropist and reformer, Dorothea Dix transformed living conditions in
prisons and established institutions for the mentally insane in 20 states, as well as Canada ( DIX ).
Through her crusade for fair treatment of the mentally insane, Dorothea Dix exemplifies the ideals of
her time to protect the rights of all human beings, no matter their age, race, or mental capacity. On
April 4, 1802 in Hampden, Maine, Dorothea Lynde Dix was born to Joseph and Mary Dix. Due to her
mother s poor health, Dix assumed the household duties of tending to the house and caring for her two
younger brothers from a very young age. Meanwhile, her father traveled as a preacher who sold

At her doctor s request, Dix spent 18 months in Liverpool, England, during which her mother and
grandmother passed away. Soon after, she returned to America, but sadly, Dix was still to drained to
resume teaching (Morin). Four years later, in 1837, Dix agreed to instruct the women at the local jail
on religion. When she arrives at the jail, she finds some of the women, who seem to be mentally
impaired, foul and freezing, so she asks that their quarters be heated, however, the man responds that
the lunatics do not feel the cold and therefore they do not need to waste resources keeping them warm.
Incensed, Dix recruits two respected gentlemen, Samuel Gridley Howe and Charles Sumner, who
confirm, and support her requests that conditions at the jail be bettered; in light of their support, the
jail agrees to improve their conditions. This experience motivated Dix to study the mentally ill, in an
effort to understand the cause and the best way to treat it (Morin). Early on in her studies, Dix decided
that Massachusetts should do more for their mentally ill citizens. However, at the time, Massachusetts
provided better care than many other states, and thanks to Horace Mann, already had two insane
asylums, although they were unequipped to handle the large population of mentally ill patients that
needed care. Over the next eighteen months, Dix traveled from jail to asylum to prison to poorhouse,

thought about as a disorder of its own. Before being recognized as a branch of Anxiety Disorders,
Panic Disorders, were perceived as a generic diagnosis of stress or nerves (Tracy, 2014). In an abstract

Mnemonic Vs Concept Map Study
Two strategies for helping learners process the material that would facilitate effective storage and
retrieval is concept maps and using mnemonics. The way a learner could use concept map to learn the
material about African Kingdoms and Trading States is to create a diagram of Sunni Ali as a leader
and the predecessor Askia Muhammad and how Morocco soldiers had won due to guns, technology,
and cannons. The student can also create a map as shown in the map study, to determine the trading
states by using creating his own map and legend. After using the concept map as a strategy a student
could facilitate effective storage by understanding the concept map rather than memorizing. The
second strategy a learner could use is mnemonics to remember the first and last name of the rulers and

The Beauty Of Motherhood And Breastfeeding
In this paper I will evaluate two artworks that share the same theme of motherhood and breastfeeding.
In the last few years, the sexualization of breastfeeding has become a big issue. This is due to people
see breast as sexual objects and think that women are being exhibitionist, and are doing it just to flaunt
their breasts in public. Breastfeeding mothers are faced with the public criticism as they struggle to
breastfeed their child, although it is the most natural and healthy method of feeding. The first artwork
is by Mary Cassatt and is titled Mother Rose Nursing her Child. This painting was created in the
1900s and it depicts a woman breastfeeding her child. The second piece is a contemporary portrait
created by Catherine Opie titled Self Portrait Nursing. The portrait depicts a modern mother also
nursing her child. When comparing both of these pieces of art I plan to focus on the beauty of
motherhood and the bond between mother and child. In this paper I will discuss the social issue of
mother s being criticized for breastfeeding in public. Now more than ever women s breasts are being
overly sexualized when they are not a sexual organ, but in fact a part of their body used to feed
another human being. Mary Stevenson Cassatt (May 22, 1844 June 14, 1926) was an American painter
and printmaker. She lived most of her adult life in France. She was born in Allegheny City,
Pennsylvania, which is now part of Pittsburgh. She began studying painting at the Pennsylvania

External Causes Of Aging
There are many reasons why your skin ages. The number one reason is aging. It is simply natural for
skin to become thinner, produce less collagen, elastin, and decrease cellular regeneration as you get
older. There is not much you can do about these internal causes of aging, but there are external causes
of aging skin that you can control to some extent.
The number one external reason skin ages is exposure to the ultraviolet (UV) rays of direct sunlight
over extended periods. Ultraviolet rays break down elastin and collagen and hamper the production of
new collagen, which the skin naturally produces to repair the damage. Prolonged exposure to the sun
also significantly increases the risk of skin cancer. This is true for tanning beds and indoor tanning
equipment. Fortunately, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A sedentary lifestyle will slow circulation, and over time contribute to prematurely aging skin.
Exercise will also help you have more energy, which will make you look and feel younger.
Cold weather contributes to aging skin, especially cold wind. It dries out the skin causing wrinkles.
When you need to go outside in cold weather, you can protect your face with a good moisturizer.
Indoors the air may be heated and dry. This is also not good for the skin. A humidifier can reduce the
dryness in the air its aging effects on the skin.
Regular consumption of alcohol will gradually dilate the small blood vessels in the skin and increase
the blood flow near the surface of the skin, especially on the face. This condition can become
permanent and create a flushed appearance caused by broken blood vessels. Alcohol also dehydrates
the skin causing wrinkles.
A healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables as well as Omega 3 fatty acids will go a long way to
protect the skin against premature aging. Regularly eating too much sugar may cause glycation, which
will harm collagen and eventually cause a loss of elasticity and

The Similarities Of Abraham Lincoln And Nathan Bedford...
There are going to be times when the nation needs someone to be a hero and lead them to a better
place. A hero does not necessarily have to have a supernatural power. The only thing that makes
heroes heroic is their brave soul and mind. Abraham Lincoln and Nathan Bedford Forrest are also
considered heroes in different ways. Nathan Bedford Forrest is a genius, a commander, and a
successful businessman. Lincoln is also another genius, a commander, and a man who ended slavery.
Both Abraham Lincoln and Nathan Bedford Forrest influenced people in different ways and reasons.
Abraham Lincoln and Nathan Bedford Forrest walked on a different career path, but still somewhat
similar. They are a leader and also a role model for many people. Forrest was born in a small town of
Chapel Hill in Tennessee. He was born into a very poor family with no education. All he learned when
he was growing up as a child was hunting, tracking, and survival skills. Lincoln on the other hand was
not any better. He was born and raised in a log cabin and also faced so many difficulties growing up.
Lincoln s brother died when he was very young, his mother also died from an illness, then his sister
from a childbirth. Lincoln also suffered from depression many times throughout his life. Yet, these two
men are indeed very encouraging to the people of America. Lincoln set his goal to change the country
in a way anyone would have never tried. He had his goal to end slavery and also took action against

Strength In What Remains By Tracy Kidder
Strength in what remains is a nonfiction book by Tracy Kidder. It chronicles the story of a Burundian
man named Deogratis. Deo, a Tutsi, survived a genocide that embroiled Burundi and Rwanda,
especially from 1993 1994. deo was forced to flee the hospital where he had a medical school
internship. He made his way, without any resources, to Rwanda, only to be forced to escape violence
there and make his way back to Burundi and finally back to America. Kidder does not narrate the book
in a simple chronological format, but instead alternates between Deo s story before and after he
escapes Burundi. We first encounter Deo on a journey with Kidder to revisit the sites of the Hutu Tutsi
atrocities of the 1990 s. We then shift several years earlier

Antigone Tragic Hero Essay
According to Aristotle, the main idea of a tragic hero is a person who brings about feelings of pity or
of fear for their situation in an audience (Hogue, Tragic Hero). The character will cause a series of
events that will lead to their tragic downfall, which is normally their death. In the case of The Oedipus
Plays of Sophocles, the story of Antigone evokes the most pity from the audience. At the beginning of
her story, she realizes that she is breaking a law set by Creon, but that doesn t sway her decision. She
will honor the death of her brother even if it causes her own; she is extremely loyal to her family, and
also too stubborn to allow the threat of death that hangs above her head to change her mind. Antigone

follow the law that Creon made so that Antigone would not meet the fate that her father, mother, and
brothers met. However, the fate that Antigone suffered was just as tragic as the rest of the house of
Oedipus if no more so. She, like her mother, hanged herself, but she died trying to show her deceased
brother some respect. While the reasons for Jocasta s death were that of shame and guilt, Antigone s
death showed loyalty and bravery. Her father took away a gift that the gods gave him, and her brothers
killed each other over the throne, but she stood for what she believed in while respecting the unspoken
laws that the gods set. She was a hero, and a hero fighting against what they believe to be wrong

What Is The Future Of America s Future
In my opinion, the future of the United States of America will end up being a technology filled,
horrifying place. Most of the time, people of America will think that this country is getting better and
better each day, but this is very incorrect. To explain, studies show that ever since the 1960 s, the
United States has become worse every year in categories such as the use of cell phones, obesity, and
conflicts between different groups. These categories are only some of the problems/issues that this
country is dealing with at the moment and the more we grow in years, the worse these issues will get.
Also, many people will agree and disagree with my statement, but most of the people who disagree
secretly know that this world is becoming a horrible place. Also, to clarify, I never meant to say that
this country is becoming corrupt in every category. This country is doing great in some categories
such as American education and the United States defense system. ... Show more content on

a phone screen is smaller than a computer screen, which means you are more likely to squint and

Descriptive Essay On Imaginary Friends
Imaginary friends are common for kids to play with growing up, but in my case my imaginary friends
were actual people who I just didn t know. Growing up I learned I had two biological brothers that
were adopted when I was one. I d always dreamed about what it would be like to meet them and play
with them. After sixteen years that dream became a reality.
My mom had eight kids total but only three were biological. I grew up with my five half siblings, two
were older than me and three were younger. My oldest sister, Tiffany, first told me about my two older
biological brothers when I was nine. I was super curious about them and would constantly make up
scenarios of what it would be like to meet them.
Edwin Jr is the eldest of you three and Kevin is the middle. His name should be easy to remember
since he has the same curly hair and tan skin as you, Tiffany stated while holding up baby pictures. It
became an obsession to try and find my brothers but knowing where to start was the hardest part. As I
got older I kept losing faith that I would ever find them. There were nights that I would just look at
pictures and cry. It was as if reality hit that finding them would never happen.
At the end of October my world changed. I was on a FCCLA trip and we were on our way back from
Conway when my mom texted me. She sent me pictures of these two guys and a baby. I didn t even
have to ask her who they were, I just knew that they were my brothers.
Jess, why are you crying? Are you okay? Abby was looking at me and I could see the worry in her
eyes. I don t understand why you are crying. You were just fine, she was getting worried but the words
just wouldn t come out of my mouth. Abby new that I had brothers and once she saw the pictures she
looked at me and hugged me.
What s with all the hugging? You guys are super weird, Trenton said from the front seat. He was
giving us his judgemental eyes but we just ignored him. My mom texted me and said in three weeks
we are driving to Illinois to meet them. She called me on the phone to go into more detail and told me
that their whole names were changed.

When you are born with certain characteristics, leadership can sometimes come easy. Like Dr. Brian
Hemphill said in the video, age does shape natural born qualities on leadership. A person at 10 years
old that is born with leadership qualities will think differently of those qualities at 40, 50, or 60 years
old. In order to gain a following, it is however important to posses these qualities. Courage is a quality
I have difficulty with. I have had this issue since I was a little girl and still struggle with it in my day

perfect that quality. I could start practicing courage by giving myself courageous task weekly. An

Georges-Pierre Seurat Essay
During his short life, Georges Pierre Seurat was an innovator in an age of innovators in the field of art.
This french painter was a leader in a movement called neo impressionist in the late 19th century.
Unlike the broad brushstrokes of the impressionist, Seurat developed a technique called pointillism or
divisionism. In this method, he used small dots or strokes of contrasting color to create the subtle
changes contained within the painting. Seurat was an art scientist in that he spent much of his life,
searching for how different colors and linear effects would change the look or texture of a canvas. He
was painstaking in his work, the technique he chose taking much longer to produce a work of art.
Pointillism is a form of painting in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Usually when colors are produced by pigments being mixed physically, the subtractive color theory is
at work. Here the mixing of pigments of the primary colours produces less light; so if we mix red, blue
and yellow pigments(subtractive primaries), we get a colour close to black. However when colours are
produced by the mixing of light, then the additive color theory is at work. Here the mixing of lights of
the three primary colours produces more light; so if we mix red, blue and green light(additive
primaries) we get something close to white light. The brighter effect of pointillist colours could rise
from the fact that subtractive mixing is avoided and something closer to the effect of additive mixing
is obtained even through pigments (Pointillism)
The brushwork used to perform pointillistic color mixing is at the expense of traditional brushwork
which could be used to delineate texture. Color television receivers and computer screens, both CRT
and LCD, use tiny dots of primary red, green, and blue to render color, and can thus be regarded as a
kind of pointillism (Pointillism).
Impressionism is a movement in French painting, sometimes called optical realism because of its
almost scientific interest in the actual visual experience and effect of light and movement on
appearance of objects (Impressionism). Neoimpressionism was a late 19th century art movement led

The Value Of Public Education
In Thomas Jefferson s legislative bill for the state of Virginia in 1776, he outlined a need for the
establishment of ...a school for teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic...and every person is entitled
to send their children three years gratis, and much longer as they please, paying for it, (Smith).
Jefferson stressed the need for a public school system, in which every student had a right to a basic
education. Although having gone through modifications, the basic public school system is still in place
to this day. To fully take advantage of one s public education, one must take an active and responsible
role in their education. This means that one must be accountable, diligent, and productive in their
work as well as contribute to the classroom ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One might take up the popular vote that dedication to school can lead to excessive hours of study and
a lack of sleep. Per a study by Eaton, Ph.D. et al., about 68.9% of questioned high school students got
an insufficient (less than 7 hours) of sleep per night, of which about 6% claimed to have gotten less
than 4 hours of sleep (2). However, I argue back that the diligence the students should not lead to
excessive, long nights, but rather to good study habits and time management. This will prevent late
nights of strenuous work, as the work would have been divided among several days or weeks to
spread out the workload. Some might then argue back that sometimes the students do not have control
over their workload and spontaneous assignments that interrupt their schedule; sometimes it is the
teacher s spontaneous and strenuous assignments that cause the students to stay up so late working on
projects. However, to counteract that statement, I claim that problems like these should not be
occurring in a supportive public school system. The teachers should be supportive of the children for
whom they are providing a public education for. Others might also argue against spreading ideas in
class, especially with ideas of religion,

The essence of gratitude is acknowledging and appreciating the good in your life and doing so
surfaces endless benefits that contribute to well being. While this hypothesis seems rather indisputable
there is evidence and research to further convince the sceptics. Emmons and McCullough garnered
their conclusions through an experiment in which different groups documented their lives in different
manners. Through daily and weekly journals the participants were asked to record negative
occurrences, neutral events, or things they were grateful for respectively. The findings were
conclusive; the group that kept tabs on things they were grateful for consistently reported a greater
sense of well being (Sansone and Sansone, 18 22). The methods Emmons and McCullough used to
conduct this experiment were very professional and free of any bias. By tailoring the experiment to
allow for as much participant control as possible there is little room for influence on their part.
Additional research from Froh and Sefick in partnership with Emmons echoes these sentiments. The
trio conducted a study in which 221 adolescents were tracked and those who routinely counted their
blessings experienced enhanced life satisfaction and overall well being. (Froh, J., Sefick, W. J.,

Society s Influence On Greek Culture
Greek culture has influence on all of society s daily life. It has also influence our culture. It has
impacted how we write and tell stories. Not just that but also what makes a hero and how heroic
movies are made. It has impacted how our perspective, literature, language, and many more stuff, and
aspects that till now people still put into practice. The aspects of Greek culture that are similar to today
s society is how society sees heros as evidence by culture. Culture is the perspective and belief of the
society. Campbell discovered many common patterns running through hero myths and stories from
around the world ( Hamilton,1867 1963 ,p. 1). This citation is related to the topic sentence because

Algernon Selfishness
The Influence of Being Egotistical Some people will do anything to escape reality. The idea of living a
storybook life excites them. They want to face the good, but not the bad. However, a few of those
people take the charade to new levels. They disrupt the lives of everyone around them and try to run
from the consequences. Those people are selfish. In Oscar Wilde s The Importance of Being Earnest,
the reader watches the downfall of a Victorian clique. One of the play s main characters, Algernon, has
decided that he deserves a break from reality. Unsurprisingly, this mindset gets Algy into trouble at
times. Algernon earns the well deserved title of the most shallow and static character through his
attitude towards marriage, his perception of others, and his opinion of himself.
Marriage is meant to be a cherished union between two lovers; however, Algernon s behavior towards
marriage is inherently selfish. Many times throughout The Importance of Being Earnest, Algernon acts
as though marriage is an outdated and boorish concept. Directly after Jack confesses his proposal plan

Five Things About The State Of Idaho
Five Interesting Things About the State of Idaho
Idaho is a state located in the northwestern portion of the United States, but unless you have lived
there, you probably don t know a great deal about the state. The following are a few fun and
interesting things to know about Idaho.
They are a big source of commercial trout
Although known for its potatoes, and they are the number one potato producing state in the nation,
only a third of the country s potatoes come come from this state. Trout, on the other hand, is a
different story. Most of the commercial trout sold in the United States comes from Idaho. The

The hot water that is tapped for use as energy is found more than a half mile below the surface. Idaho
is currently ranked fifth for producing energy in this manner, but due to the large amount of natural
hot water in the southern portion of the state, Idaho has the potential to greatly expand this source of
energy.
Idaho is a big red state
Idaho votes Republican in the national election and currently sends 100 percent Republicans to
Washington, D.C. Their two members of the House of Representatives, Mike Simpson and Raul
Labrador are both Republicans. Both Senators from Idaho are also Republicans: James Risch and
Mike Crapo. Mr Crapo is the senior senator having served for 17 years. The governor of the state of
Idaho, Butch Otter, is also a Republican.

As you might guess, the state vegetable of Idaho is the potato. The state fruit is not as easy to guess. It
is the huckleberry. For those not familiar with what a huckleberry is, they are found is several varieties
in the wild, but are closely related to the blueberries that you can buy at your local supermarket.
Naturally, Idaho s state fish is a trout, specifically a cutthroat trout, but their state horse is the
appaloosa. A breed many people are not familiar with. Idaho s state flower is the Syringa, and their
state bird is the Mountain Bluebird; this is also the state bird of

Theme Of Communication In Michael Ondaatje s In The Skin...
In Michael Ondaatje s novel, In the Skin of a Lion, there is a severe shift in tone, character morality,
and emotion when comparing the beginning to the end. After completing the novel and working to
make sense of it, I began to question what the source of all this change was and the reasoning behind
it. Through analysis, I came to the conclusion that many of the prominent characters featured in this
novel are unable to engage in what is called competent communication. To be a competent
communicator, an individual must adapt to different social settings in order for their intended message
to be both appropriate and effective for their intended audience. In Ondaatje s novel, however, most
characters lack this skill, seeing things only from their point of view, failing to ever consider others
perspectives. This results in several conflicts being left without a solution and creates a cause and
effect chain of events leading to chaos. In addition to communication incompetence, I found there to
be various other barriers in communication that include, physical, linguistic, and psychological.
Throughout this paper I will be explaining and providing evidence for why these various

Oil Spills
An oil spill can be defined as an accidental or deliberate dumping of oil or petroleum products into the
ocean and its coastal waters, bays, and harbors, or onto land, or into rivers or lakes (Holum 1977).
Between one and ten million metric tons (one metric ton is 1000 kilograms) of oil are put into the
oceans every year. The oil is released, most often, in small yet consistent doses from tankers, industry,
or on shore waste disposal (Boesh, Hersher, et al. 1974). Tanker spills cost the United States more than
one hundred million dollars every year. Spill frequency increases proportionally with tonnage carried,
in a linear manner. Non tanker spills also increase linearly and account for thirty percent of all spills.

Organisms living at or near the surface are impacted more than others in the area. These organisms
include those in intertidal areas, heuston, seabirds, and bottom dwellers. The type of oil spilled
influences the extent of damage that is done to the organism. Crude oil is the most common petroleum
product that is found in oil spills. Crude oil is a complex mix of hydrocarbons with small amounts of
sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen and traces of inorganic and organometalic compounds. There are three
classes of hydrocarbons: alkanes, alkenes, and aromatics. Alkanes, in low concentrations, cause
anesthesia and narcosis, and in high concentrations, cell damage and death, in marine invertebrates.
Alkenes, which are not typically found in crude oil but in refined products such as gasoline, are more
toxic than alkanes, but less toxic than aromatics. Aromatics are not common in nature but they can kill
ocean organisms, not only at full strength, but in diluted concentrations as well. Aromatics are the
most immediately toxic component found in oil (Boesch, Hershmer, et. al. 1974).
Some dangerous hydrocarbons include benzene, toluene, naphthalene, and phenanthrene. Benzene
inhibits blood cell formation, and they all cause local irritation of the respiratory system, excitation or
depression of the central nervous system, and are mutagenic, carcinogenic, and teratogenic. The
effects of oil on organisms can be broken down into two subdivisions, chemical

Stereotypes Of Native Americans In The Film Smoke Signals
In the movie Smoke Signals the writer Sherman Alexie frequently shows stereotypes of the Native
American people and shows the audience why the stereotypes are not true or meaningful. Focusing on
the character Thomas, the film portrays him like he would be the stereotypical Indian sitting around
the campfire telling stories. I think the film did a good job trying to show that, as he is often telling
stories and he is even guided by his dreams making him seem like a spiritual person. Specifically
citing the story when Thomas had a dream that told him to go to the river and look for a sign. This
easily displays the stereotypes of Native Americans, but it also shows the stereotype is not accurate,
because he meets Victor s dad there and they

Are Conservatives Racist
The word racist has been labeled to a specific type of people. According to the Merriam Webster racist
is defined as, a person who shows or feels discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, or
who believes that a particular race is superior to another. These people have also been classified as
conservatives. The question that I present in this essay is why conservatives are seen as racist? This
question will be answered with both perspectives of the Liberals and the Conservatives. With their
inputs I can as the writer have a better understanding on this matter. The articles that I present are very
bias filled in which so I present two of the opposite opinion to balance out. The bumper sticker that is

From the conservative point of view, they have stated this label of racist or bigot t has been bestowed
on them due to the Liberals. As www.thefederalists.com a news website says, Liberals Need Racist
Foes to Vanquish. He states the liberals use the race card to attack conservative he does agree with the
fact there are bad people in any group and how there is the Misrepresentation of a community, but
questioned that liberals hadn t walked away from the past and all of this is counterproductive. Which
implies that conservative or the author of this article thinks liberals need some racist enemy to fight
against. Even after the post Civil right movement. Conservatives are convinced that liberals hold on to
those events as some fuel to push their agenda. It is said that liberals are so proud of their
achievements in the Civil Rights Movement it is all they have to combat the conservatives. Which is
acknowledged, yet thought of repetitive; as stated in Why Liberals Think Consumer Are Racist,
Everyone Hates Reruns. Many conservatives have recognized the tragedies and Injustice during the
Civil Rights Movement, but unlike the Liberals,

Introduction. In 1945, The United States Of America Utilized
Introduction In 1945, the United States of America utilized breakthrough physics research to construct
nuclear bombs which were then dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki; this event was the beginning of
weaponizing modern technologies for Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs). Since the bombing of
Japan during World War I, the use of bombs as the main means of terrorism has been the corner stone
in anti terrorism preparedness and response. However, the use of commercial jetliners in the
September 11th attacks in the United States ushered in an era of counter terrorism where conventional
WMDs were not the only resources that could be utilized in an attack. The use of modern technology
for weapons of mass destruction has prompted the creation of ... Show more content on

Chemical and Biological Attacks
During World War I, chemical warfare was utilized as a Weapon of Mass Destruction to commit large
scale attacks against oncoming forces. Wartime scientists used chemicals such as chlorine, phosgene
and mustard gas to cause blindness, asphyxiation, and death (Fitzgerald, G 2008). During these
attacks, over 1.3 million people suffered chemically induced injuries and more than 90,000 killed by
chemical weapons. The devastation caused by chemical warfare led to the gathering of 160 nations to
sign treaties banning the use of lethal chemical armaments. On both a national and local level,
emergency managers work to evaluate the potential of terrorist attacks of all magnitudes and means.
In the last 60 years, the advancement of biological technology and easily attainable chemicals has led
to an increase in chemical weaponry and biological pathogens. While nuclear and radiological attacks
are more common, chemical attacks are brutally efficient and biological attacks can be engineered
with new technology (Madsen, 2001). Chemical particles are able to disseminate through large areas
quickly and efficiently, and in some cases, are not easily detectable until lethal doses are achieved.
Unfortunately, not all of the pathogens that are considered dangerous are man made as antibiotic
resistant strains of common illnesses are

Wells Fargo Phantom Accounts Scandal
Wells Fargo has taken a lot of heat during its recent scandal. Regulatory and media authorities have
openly criticized the bank s unethical sales practices and stressful sales driven culture. While majority
of the blame has been placed on the bank s employees, nevertheless it is important to realize and
understand the role of larger forces behind the bank s actions. Wells Fargo s fraudulent and negligent
behavior has not only stressed employees and grieved customers, but also damaged its organizational
reputation and incurred financial costs.
1. WHAT CAUSED THE SCANDAL?
CEO of Wells Fargo, John Stumpf, defends the bank by claiming that the scandal resulted ... Show

However, she later found out that Wells Fargo had already opened phantom accounts in her name
since January 2012. She landed up with seven accounts, opened with fake signatures and Social
Security numbers (Hiltzik).
Employees Ideal Response. Whenever employees are forced to do something illegal or immoral, the
ideal reaction is to refuse, even at the risk of job loss. In extreme cases, employees can blow the
whistle and involve authorities. However, it is very easy to propose whistleblowing in theory, but it
requires a lot of courage to do so in reality.
Reaction of Wells Fargo towards Ideal Response. Employees at Wells Fargo, who tried to report
unethical sales practices to the bank s ethics hotline, to branch managers or senior executives, soon
found themselves jobless. Managers either created a false paper trail as proof of the poor performance
of the whistleblowing employee or simply fired him without reason (Lynch).

The True Meaning Of Freedom In The United States
Freedom? What is that? What is the true meaning of the word, freedom ? According to Webster s
Dictionary, freedom is the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action (Webster).
Even though that is the formal definition of freedom, others may their own meaning of the word
freedom . For some people, freedom is acting as one pleases. And for others, freedom is always
feeling joyful. For most, freedom plays a positive role in their life. When people have more freedom,
this generally means more rights, choices, and opportunities. In the United States, citizens have the
freedom to worship, congregate, speak, and vote. Americans often take these freedoms for granted.
Unfortunately, this situation is not the case in other parts of the world. Freedom has many years of
history, has many causes and effects, and has its own meanings of negation.
Unfortunately, millions of people worldwide lack the freedom they deserve. For instance, African
Americans faced significant racial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example; a person who is convicted of a crime can lose his freedom and be incarcerated as
punishment for his offense. Once he has completed his sentence, he is released and he can choose
either start fresh, or return to old habits. Take for instance, the Civil Rights movement. Once the
African Americans were free, it felt like an increase in population. Jobs were being fulfilled,
friendships were being made, and the world was becoming a much happier place. Following the Civil
Rights movement, there were a number of events that fought for freedom in different ways.
Fortunately, many of them had positive endings. Like all other events, there are some negative effects.
One particular negative effect is not having another person tell one what to do, and that particular
independency may frighten some people. Even though some may disagree on the idea of freedom, it
still affects them in many

Themes In Clybourne Park And Water By The Spoonful
Themes are one of the most vital and critical elements of a play s overall significance and meaning.
Without identifying what tools a playwright uses to construct his/her play through a close reading,
such as language, character, or setting, the audience would lack a clear vision of the particular play s
meaning. In the case of Clybourne Park, by Bruce Norris, and Water by the Spoonful, by Quiara
Alegria Hudes, race can be identified as a theme in both, through the use of literary devices, however
it is explored much more subtly in Water by the Spoonful. Race is the major underlying theme in
Clybourne Park, while the themes of community and addiction are dealt with in Water by the
Spoonful. Nevertheless, each play is complete with examples ... Show more content on

Karl s language in this quote, as in the previous, shows his character believes the black race should be
separate from the white community, as he feels they are not equal. He reiterates this when he
ignorantly says, ... fitting into a community is really what it all comes down to (64). Karl s character
evidently proves the theme of race. Here the audience receives a reference to the theme of community.
With the racism of the 1950 s comes the clear divide between the white and black community,
however, the sense that there is still a divide remains in 2009, in the second act.
The racism continues with another white male character, Jim, who pressures black housekeeper,
Francine into admitting that her family and herself would not fit in or feel comfortable living in a
white community. Jim asks, Would this be the sort of neighborhood you d find an attractive place in
which to live? (70). Francine avoids confrontation and simply states, It s a very nice neighborhood
(70). Her use of language is polite, as she does not want to start an argument. Instead of admitting they
would not fit into such a community, as Jim was probing her to admit, she remains calm. Francine
even agrees that there are differences between the two races, and that they live differently, saying in
reply to Jim, I agree with that (73). Rather, Francine may just be giving Jim the answer he wants. She
knows that if she opposes his opinion, she will gain nothing.

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In contrast, water resources planners have often trivialized green water management in rain fed agriculture (Liu, Zehnder, Yang 2009). Green water management often comes in the form of effective use of rainfall (Liu, Zehnder, Yang 2009). Green Water management has great conservation potential. For example, according to Liu, Zehnder, Yang (209), strengthening rainfall management could possibly double or even quadruple maize yields in sub Saharan Africa. Rainwater harvesting is a promising approach for green water management in the semiarid tropics of Asia and Africa (Liu, Zehnder, Yang 2009). Experiments with rainwater harvesting increased yield by a factor of 2 to 3 in Burkina Faso, Kenya, Niger, Sudan and Tanzania as compared to the current yield levels (Liu, Zehnder, Yang 2009). Additional spending in many of the rain fed areas allowed more poor people to rise above the poverty line than would be expected with investments in irrigation infrastructure (Liu, Zehnder, Yang 2009). Green water management is not only limited to infrastructure and management technologies, as biotechnological advances can also be helpful (Liu, Zehnder, Yang 2009). For example, a hybrid New Rice for Africa, which was developed to grow in the uplands of West Africa, produces more than 50% more grain than current varieties when cultivated in traditional ... • 8. Essay on Brian Friel s Translations Brian Friel s Translations Brian Friel s play Translations was the first production of the Field Day Theatre Company in Derry in 1980, which Friel co founded with Stephen Rea. It describes the beginning of the process of Anglicization in a relatively remote Gaelic speaking area during the 1833 Survey of Ireland, in which the English mapped Ireland, both culturally and geographically. Years of concerted anglicizing of the Irish by the British early in the 19th century led to the widespread fall into disuse of the native Gaelic tongue. National schools teaching exclusively in English began to open during the Survey of Ireland, and English culture encroached rapidly into Ireland. Hyde s speech argues that the Irish had by that point indiscriminately adopted all that was English with little thought as to its value, that the Irish had [ceased] to be Irish without becoming English. 2 He criticizes those Irish who claim to hate British dominance, yet speak only English, anglicize their Irish names, and remain ignorant of Gaelic literature. His central view is that the Gaelic language is the most important aspect of an Irish identity distinct to that of the British, and that only a return to Ireland s native language can halt the process of Anglicization. However, he is careful not to make the claim that nothing English is of value, but emphasizes the necessity of not neglecting that which is essentially Irish. The history of Ireland is one of early scholasticism and rich culture in times when the rest of Europe had less of a literary and artistic tradition. By the time of Hyde s speech, the nation had become one of the least studious and most un literary 3 countries of the area, and he claims that the fault lies in a divergence from the right path. 4 Progressive Anglicization has led the Irish to forget their own culture and its traditions. The British claim that because the Irish have forgotten much of their language and customs, they should be content as an integral part of the United Kingdom, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Rio Grande´s Controversial Situation The Rio Grande Many people think that having a river near their city can always be good as they can make a good usage of the river, just like San Antonio made their river very profitable. What people never think is what problems or controversies the river can create. Almost always a river may have its advantages and disadvantages and it is no different with the Rio Grande. The Rio Grande is not as profitable because two countries own the river. Instead if it was own by only one country then the river would be more useful. The Rio Grande creates many problems between the United States and Mexican Government, it is also very useful for both governments and for human beings, the water itself has many issues, and should the water not be used anymore. Many problems arise do to the Rio Grande between governments especially, between El Paso and Ciudad Juarez. Although there have been several treaties concerning this river, one government is never happy and always wants a bigger part of the river. Both governments believe the river only belongs to one country, that is because they are greedy and just do not want to share the water when they believe they should be the owner of all the river. For example, in El Paso and Juarez the water should be split in half, but instead El Paso takes nearly all of the water. Before, Juarez would get most of the water even though El Paso did get a great quantity. A few years back El Paso decided to construct a path that would lead all the water to ... When she arrives at the jail, she finds some of the women, who seem to be mentally impaired, foul and freezing, so she asks that their quarters be heated, however, the man responds that the lunatics do not feel the cold and therefore they do not need to waste resources keeping them warm. Incensed, Dix recruits two respected gentlemen, Samuel Gridley Howe and Charles Sumner, who confirm, and support her requests that conditions at the jail be bettered; in light of their support, the jail agrees to improve their conditions. This experience motivated Dix to study the mentally ill, in an effort to understand the cause and the best way to treat it (Morin). Early on in her studies, Dix decided that Massachusetts should do more for their mentally ill citizens. However, at the time, Massachusetts provided better care than many other states, and thanks to Horace Mann, already had two insane asylums, although they were unequipped to handle the large population of mentally ill patients that needed care. • 20. The Beauty Of Motherhood And Breastfeeding In this paper I will evaluate two artworks that share the same theme of motherhood and breastfeeding. In the last few years, the sexualization of breastfeeding has become a big issue. This is due to people see breast as sexual objects and think that women are being exhibitionist, and are doing it just to flaunt their breasts in public. Breastfeeding mothers are faced with the public criticism as they struggle to breastfeed their child, although it is the most natural and healthy method of feeding. The first artwork is by Mary Cassatt and is titled Mother Rose Nursing her Child. This painting was created in the 1900s and it depicts a woman breastfeeding her child. The second piece is a contemporary portrait created by Catherine Opie titled Self Portrait Nursing. The portrait depicts a modern mother also nursing her child. When comparing both of these pieces of art I plan to focus on the beauty of motherhood and the bond between mother and child. In this paper I will discuss the social issue of mother s being criticized for breastfeeding in public. Now more than ever women s breasts are being overly sexualized when they are not a sexual organ, but in fact a part of their body used to feed another human being. Mary Stevenson Cassatt (May 22, 1844 June 14, 1926) was an American painter and printmaker. She lived most of her adult life in France. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, which is now part of Pittsburgh. She began studying painting at the Pennsylvania ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 1994, cholera cases were notified from 94 countries the highest ever number of countries in one year (WHO, 1995). Two disturbing aspects of global cholera picture in 1990s have been dramatic and unexpected reappearance of epidemic cholera caused by V.cholerae 01 E1T or in Latin America after 100 years absence from the region and unexpected appearance in 1992 in South India of an epidemic strain of Vibrio cholera non 01, classified as V.cholerae 0139 Bengal. • 24. External Causes Of Aging There are many reasons why your skin ages. The number one reason is aging. It is simply natural for skin to become thinner, produce less collagen, elastin, and decrease cellular regeneration as you get older. There is not much you can do about these internal causes of aging, but there are external causes of aging skin that you can control to some extent. The number one external reason skin ages is exposure to the ultraviolet (UV) rays of direct sunlight over extended periods. Ultraviolet rays break down elastin and collagen and hamper the production of new collagen, which the skin naturally produces to repair the damage. Prolonged exposure to the sun also significantly increases the risk of skin cancer. This is true for tanning beds and indoor tanning equipment. Fortunately, ... • 25. The Similarities Of Abraham Lincoln And Nathan Bedford... There are going to be times when the nation needs someone to be a hero and lead them to a better place. A hero does not necessarily have to have a supernatural power. The only thing that makes heroes heroic is their brave soul and mind. Abraham Lincoln and Nathan Bedford Forrest are also considered heroes in different ways. Nathan Bedford Forrest is a genius, a commander, and a successful businessman. Lincoln is also another genius, a commander, and a man who ended slavery. Both Abraham Lincoln and Nathan Bedford Forrest influenced people in different ways and reasons. Abraham Lincoln and Nathan Bedford Forrest walked on a different career path, but still somewhat similar. They are a leader and also a role model for many people. Forrest was born in a small town of Chapel Hill in Tennessee. He was born into a very poor family with no education. All he learned when he was growing up as a child was hunting, tracking, and survival skills. Lincoln on the other hand was not any better. He was born and raised in a log cabin and also faced so many difficulties growing up. Lincoln s brother died when he was very young, his mother also died from an illness, then his sister from a childbirth. Lincoln also suffered from depression many times throughout his life. Yet, these two men are indeed very encouraging to the people of America. Lincoln set his goal to change the country in a way anyone would have never tried. • 27. Antigone Tragic Hero Essay According to Aristotle, the main idea of a tragic hero is a person who brings about feelings of pity or of fear for their situation in an audience (Hogue, Tragic Hero). The character will cause a series of events that will lead to their tragic downfall, which is normally their death. In the case of The Oedipus Plays of Sophocles, the story of Antigone evokes the most pity from the audience. At the beginning of her story, she realizes that she is breaking a law set by Creon, but that doesn t sway her decision. She will honor the death of her brother even if it causes her own; she is extremely loyal to her family, and also too stubborn to allow the threat of death that hangs above her head to change her mind. Ismene was trying to persuade her sister to follow the law that Creon made so that Antigone would not meet the fate that her father, mother, and brothers met. However, the fate that Antigone suffered was just as tragic as the rest of the house of Oedipus if no more so. She, like her mother, hanged herself, but she died trying to show her deceased brother some respect. While the reasons for Jocasta s death were that of shame and guilt, Antigone s death showed loyalty and bravery. Her father took away a gift that the gods gave him, and her brothers killed each other over the throne, but she stood for what she believed in while respecting the unspoken laws that the gods set. Growing up I learned I had two biological brothers that were adopted when I was one. I d always dreamed about what it would be like to meet them and play with them. After sixteen years that dream became a reality. My mom had eight kids total but only three were biological. I grew up with my five half siblings, two were older than me and three were younger. My oldest sister, Tiffany, first told me about my two older biological brothers when I was nine. I was super curious about them and would constantly make up scenarios of what it would be like to meet them. Edwin Jr is the eldest of you three and Kevin is the middle. His name should be easy to remember since he has the same curly hair and tan skin as you, Tiffany stated while holding up baby pictures. It became an obsession to try and find my brothers but knowing where to start was the hardest part. As I got older I kept losing faith that I would ever find them. There were nights that I would just look at pictures and cry. It was as if reality hit that finding them would never happen. At the end of October my world changed. I was on a FCCLA trip and we were on our way back from Conway when my mom texted me. She sent me pictures of these two guys and a baby. I didn t even have to ask her who they were, I just knew that they were my brothers. Jess, why are you crying? Are you okay? Abby was looking at me and I could see the worry in her eyes. I don t understand why you are crying. You were just fine, she was getting worried but the words just wouldn t come out of my mouth. This french painter was a leader in a movement called neo impressionist in the late 19th century. Unlike the broad brushstrokes of the impressionist, Seurat developed a technique called pointillism or divisionism. In this method, he used small dots or strokes of contrasting color to create the subtle changes contained within the painting. Seurat was an art scientist in that he spent much of his life, searching for how different colors and linear effects would change the look or texture of a canvas. Usually when colors are produced by pigments being mixed physically, the subtractive color theory is at work. Here the mixing of pigments of the primary colours produces less light; so if we mix red, blue and yellow pigments(subtractive primaries), we get a colour close to black. However when colours are produced by the mixing of light, then the additive color theory is at work. Here the mixing of lights of the three primary colours produces more light; so if we mix red, blue and green light(additive primaries) we get something close to white light. The brighter effect of pointillist colours could rise from the fact that subtractive mixing is avoided and something closer to the effect of additive mixing is obtained even through pigments (Pointillism) The brushwork used to perform pointillistic color mixing is at the expense of traditional brushwork which could be used to delineate texture. Color television receivers and computer screens, both CRT and LCD, use tiny dots of primary red, green, and blue to render color, and can thus be regarded as a kind of pointillism (Pointillism). However, I argue back that the diligence the students should not lead to excessive, long nights, but rather to good study habits and time management. This will prevent late nights of strenuous work, as the work would have been divided among several days or weeks to spread out the workload. Some might then argue back that sometimes the students do not have control over their workload and spontaneous assignments that interrupt their schedule; sometimes it is the teacher s spontaneous and strenuous assignments that cause the students to stay up so late working on projects. However, to counteract that statement, I claim that problems like these should not be occurring in a supportive public school system. Through daily and weekly journals the participants were asked to record negative occurrences, neutral events, or things they were grateful for respectively. The findings were conclusive; the group that kept tabs on things they were grateful for consistently reported a greater sense of well being (Sansone and Sansone, 18 22). • 42. Theme Of Communication In Michael Ondaatje s In The Skin... In Michael Ondaatje s novel, In the Skin of a Lion, there is a severe shift in tone, character morality, and emotion when comparing the beginning to the end. After completing the novel and working to make sense of it, I began to question what the source of all this change was and the reasoning behind it. Through analysis, I came to the conclusion that many of the prominent characters featured in this novel are unable to engage in what is called competent communication. To be a competent communicator, an individual must adapt to different social settings in order for their intended message to be both appropriate and effective for their intended audience. In Ondaatje s novel, however, most characters lack this skill, seeing things only from their point of view, failing to ever consider others perspectives. This results in several conflicts being left without a solution and creates a cause and effect chain of events leading to chaos. In addition to communication incompetence, I found there to be various other barriers in communication that include, physical, linguistic, and psychological. Throughout this paper I will be explaining and providing evidence for why these various communication barriers are responsible for the eventual character breakdown and excessive entropic nature in In the Skin of a Lion. Physical barriers are those that communicate to others outside of a certain group to stay out. Some of these barriers are obvious such as barricades, territories, doors, ... • 43. Oil Spills An oil spill can be defined as an accidental or deliberate dumping of oil or petroleum products into the ocean and its coastal waters, bays, and harbors, or onto land, or into rivers or lakes (Holum 1977). Between one and ten million metric tons (one metric ton is 1000 kilograms) of oil are put into the oceans every year. The oil is released, most often, in small yet consistent doses from tankers, industry, or on shore waste disposal (Boesh, Hersher, et al. 1974). Tanker spills cost the United States more than one hundred million dollars every year. Spill frequency increases proportionally with tonnage carried, in a linear manner. Non tanker spills also increase linearly and account for thirty percent of all spills. The Atlantic area ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Organisms living at or near the surface are impacted more than others in the area. These organisms include those in intertidal areas, heuston, seabirds, and bottom dwellers. The type of oil spilled influences the extent of damage that is done to the organism. Crude oil is the most common petroleum product that is found in oil spills. Crude oil is a complex mix of hydrocarbons with small amounts of sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen and traces of inorganic and organometalic compounds. There are three classes of hydrocarbons: alkanes, alkenes, and aromatics. Alkanes, in low concentrations, cause anesthesia and narcosis, and in high concentrations, cell damage and death, in marine invertebrates. Alkenes, which are not typically found in crude oil but in refined products such as gasoline, are more toxic than alkanes, but less toxic than aromatics. Aromatics are not common in nature but they can kill ocean organisms, not only at full strength, but in diluted concentrations as well. Aromatics are the most immediately toxic component found in oil (Boesch, Hershmer, et. al. 1974). Some dangerous hydrocarbons include benzene, toluene, naphthalene, and phenanthrene. Benzene inhibits blood cell formation, and they all cause local irritation of the respiratory system, excitation or depression of the central nervous system, and are mutagenic, carcinogenic, and teratogenic. The effects of oil on organisms can be broken down into two subdivisions, chemical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Stereotypes Of Native Americans In The Film Smoke Signals In the movie Smoke Signals the writer Sherman Alexie frequently shows stereotypes of the Native American people and shows the audience why the stereotypes are not true or meaningful. Focusing on the character Thomas, the film portrays him like he would be the stereotypical Indian sitting around the campfire telling stories. I think the film did a good job trying to show that, as he is often telling stories and he is even guided by his dreams making him seem like a spiritual person. Specifically citing the story when Thomas had a dream that told him to go to the river and look for a sign. This easily displays the stereotypes of Native Americans, but it also shows the stereotype is not accurate, because he meets Victor s dad there and they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Since the bombing of Japan during World War I, the use of bombs as the main means of terrorism has been the corner stone in anti terrorism preparedness and response. However, the use of commercial jetliners in the September 11th attacks in the United States ushered in an era of counter terrorism where conventional WMDs were not the only resources that could be utilized in an attack. Chemical and Biological Attacks During World War I, chemical warfare was utilized as a Weapon of Mass Destruction to commit large scale attacks against oncoming forces. Wartime scientists used chemicals such as chlorine, phosgene and mustard gas to cause blindness, asphyxiation, and death (Fitzgerald, G 2008). During these attacks, over 1.3 million people suffered chemically induced injuries and more than 90,000 killed by chemical weapons. The devastation caused by chemical warfare led to the gathering of 160 nations to sign treaties banning the use of lethal chemical armaments. On both a national and local level, emergency managers work to evaluate the potential of terrorist attacks of all magnitudes and means. In the last 60 years, the advancement of biological technology and easily attainable chemicals has led to an increase in chemical weaponry and biological pathogens. While nuclear and radiological attacks are more common, chemical attacks are brutally efficient and biological attacks can be engineered with new technology (Madsen, 2001). Chemical particles are able to disseminate through large areas quickly and efficiently, and in some cases, are not easily detectable until lethal doses are achieved. Without identifying what tools a playwright uses to construct his/her play through a close reading, such as language, character, or setting, the audience would lack a clear vision of the particular play s meaning. In the case of Clybourne Park, by Bruce Norris, and Water by the Spoonful, by Quiara Alegria Hudes, race can be identified as a theme in both, through the use of literary devices, however it is explored much more subtly in Water by the Spoonful. Karl s language in this quote, as in the previous, shows his character believes the black race should be separate from the white community, as he feels they are not equal. He reiterates this when he ignorantly says, ... fitting into a community is really what it all comes down to (64). Karl s character evidently proves the theme of race. Here the audience receives a reference to the theme of community. With the racism of the 1950 s comes the clear divide between the white and black community, however, the sense that there is still a divide remains in 2009, in the second act. The racism continues with another white male character, Jim, who pressures black housekeeper, Francine into admitting that her family and herself would not fit in or feel comfortable living in a white community. Jim asks, Would this be the sort of neighborhood you d find an attractive place in which to live? (70). Francine avoids confrontation and simply states, It s a very nice neighborhood (70). Her use of language is polite, as she does not want to start an argument. Instead of admitting they would not fit into such a community, as Jim was probing her to admit, she remains calm. Francine even agrees that there are differences between the two races, and that they live differently, saying in reply to Jim, I agree with that (73).
