I think we can agree that, overall, 2019 has been a pretty tumultuous year globally. With elections and climate crises, Brexit and impeachment proceedings, terror attacks and natural disasters, it can be hard to find the lightness in all of the uncertainty. However, we’ve also had the first-ever photo of a black hole taken by some very clever young scientists, the most diverse class of lawmakers in history sworn into US congress, a surge in youth-led global climate activism, a cute royal birth, and so much more! At FlexMR, we’ve had a pretty good year too! With the release of our integrated insight platform, InsightHub, in September 2018, we’ve only built on the that success throughout this past year; with new tools and services, new colleagues, new clients, new projects, new internal and external content, new reporting methods, new speaking opportunities, new little people brought into the world, and so much more, we’ve had a hard time fitting it all in! Transforming Construction Innovation Hub Overview and Platform Design Competi...
As part of the Clean Growth Grand Challenge within the Government’s Industrial Strategy, a £420m Construction Sector Deal was announced in 2018. A key part of the Sector Deal is an investment by the Government of £170m in the Transforming Construction Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF) in line with the Transforming Infrastructure Performance (TIP) Strategy and the Transport Infrastructure Efficiency Strategy (TIES).
£10m MMC, Digital and Whole-Life Performance (CR&D) Programme: UK businesses can apply for a share of up to £10m for CR&D projects that go beyond the state-of-the-art in improving productivity, quality and performance of the UK construction sector.

Insight teams within an organisation that doesn’t value market research are typically seen as a cost-centre or a money pit. Those insight teams then find themselves in positions where they have to fight for funding, the chance to prove themselves and to make sure their stakeholders are using the insights they pass on. All of this extra work usually brings down the quality of research as the limited time of insight teams isn’t spent as much on the research itself.
So how do insight teams and stakeholder organisations become empowered by insights? What can insight professionals do to help themselves as well as their stakeholders by creating a culture of insights? The quest for insights empowerment starts with an open mind and a desire for change.

When formed and maintained correctly, insights communities are typically places of vibrant conversation and insight generation. Respondents can complete research tasks, chat amongst themselves in forums, and talk directly to researchers, sometimes even stakeholders themselves. Researchers can watch as respondents work through tasks, reveal unexpected insights as they chat amongst themselves, and see the community make a difference to an organisation through insight production and distribution.
During the formation of each insights community there are many decisions made depending on the requirements of each insight team and organisation. So what does it take to create the perfect insights community?

The Design Thinking Process (for Insights Professionals)
The document outlines the design thinking process which consists of 5 stages: empathise, define, ideate, prototype, and test. It is an iterative process that starts with understanding user needs through research and ends with testing solutions. Design thinking provides a systematic approach to solving problems creatively by focusing on the human perspective and generating many innovative ideas. It can help teams access insights and apply hands-on methods to find new answers.
The Big 5 Ocean Personality Types
The big five personality traits, often referred to as OCEAN, and sometimes CANOE, are: Openness, Conscientiousness, Extroversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. These five traits represent broad domains of human behaviour and account for differences in both personality and decision making. Today, the model is used by HR practitioners to evaluate potential employees and marketers to understand the audiences of their products.
The history and development of the traits is long and not without significant challenge. In fact, the earliest known attempt to build a taxonomy of human behaviour dates back to the late 1800s. Between that first investigation and the 1940s, the taxonomy was refined from over 4,000 traits to 171 and eventually 5.
However, psychological and sociological discourse over the next two decades would call into question the validity of any attempt to correlate personality with behaviour. The influential book Personality and Assessment, authored by Walter Mischel , went so far as to suggest that there was only a correlation of 0.3 between personality and behaviour. Mischel argued the case that situational variables had a much greater impact on action than pre-disposition.
By the 1990s, it had been widely accepted that both situational and personality factors affect in-the-moment behaviours. As recently as 2016, research and refinement of the OCEAN model has been ongoing, demonstrating just how influential it is – even to this day.

How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental Health
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

ChatGPT is the most popular AI tool currently. Business leaders are more actively exploring AI benefits than individual contributors. Most respondents do not believe AI will impact workforce size in 2024. However, some inhibitions still exist around AI accuracy and lack of understanding. Creatives primarily want to use AI to save time on mundane tasks and boost productivity.
