Gateway To Medicine Personal Statement
During my four years at Brooklyn Technical High School, I was part of the Gateway to Medicine
program. I was introduced to courses such as anatomy physiology, organic chemistry, and biology.
These extremely challenging classes piqued my interest to explore a future career in health care.
The Gateway to Medicineprogram was multi faceted, I went from dissecting cats to learning
about spontaneous de combustion. My guidance counselor also helped prepare me to choose a
career in the medical profession. After graduating from Brooklyn Tech, I decided to enroll in
Hunter College because of their competitive nursing program. However, after spending my first
year at Hunter taking pre requisite courses needed for consideration into the program, I was
rejected due to a C+ in Statistics. This created a slight detour in my college career, but it spurred
me to want to work harder to achieve my goal. In the years that followed, I retook a different
statistics class and received an A. I also enrolled in more challenging courses such as Psychology of
Cancer, Calculus and Research Methods in Developmental Psychology.... Show more content on

This course, called: Psychological Determinants of Health Disparities focused on the disparities
evident in health care today amongst individuals with mental health illnesses, immigrants, low
SES, and racially targeted populations. During the semester I took this class, I was also working
in both medical and dental offices to gain patient care experience. All of these experiences had
one thing in common, patients who were of lower socioeconomic status were not treated as well
as, patients who were of higher socioeconomic status. It was devastating to see individuals with
severe health issues be turned away due to inability to afford proper health care. As a nurse, I
would like to help eliminate or lessen the disparities within health care

Neruda Figurative Language
In Neruda s poem Tonight I can write the saddest lines he used, Alliteration, Simile, and repetition
to convey his feeling of lost love and sadness. Poetry For Students describes the relationship of the
poems setting to its mood explaining that, He begins writing at night, time when darkness will
match his mood.(3) The critics from poetryfor students agrees with this analysis, claiming, We
later learn that his overwhelming sorrow over a lost lover has prevented him from writing about
their relationship and its demise.(3) An instance where Neruda uses alliteration is when in the he

This simile that Neruda included connects to the meaning of the verse as in the poem affects the
reader emotionally like dew in the morning on the pasture. The comparison connects because it
is inevitable for dew to be on the pasture in the morning just like it is inevitable for the poem to
connect to the reader emotionally. Poetry For Students Found a metaphor that compares the sky
to the relationship which agrees with my meaning of the poem, One thing that Poetry for
students picked up on and I didn t is when on, the eighth line, the speaker remembers kissing his
love again and again under the endless sky a sky as endless as, he had hoped, their relationship
would be.(4) Neruda also uses repetition of the words tonight I can write the saddest lines (1, 5,

words also creates the image that literally he is writing the poem at night in his desk and he is

Avoid Real Estate Investment Tax
Minimization of Individual Tax Liability in Real Estate Investment
In the world of investing, in general, one question is often the most challenging to answer. How
does an investor grow their nest egg without losing the majority of their gain to the IRS as income
tax? This question is even more challenging in the area of real estate where one s tax liability is
drastically increased by just the sale of one property. This simple transaction can increasing the
investor s ordinary income if the property is a short term investment (investment is less than 1
year) or increasing their capital gains for long term investments (over 1 year). Surprisingly, there
are several easy ways to drastically reduce tax liabilities with some planning and ... Show more

In this case the custodian withdraws its fiduciary responsibility and allows you to choose the
investments that you think are appropriate, such as investment property. (Casey 2013, 168)
At first glance the self directed IRA can seem like the perfect way to leave the stressful world of
the stock market but the seemly endless rules can quickly change an invertors mind.
Furthermore if an investor knowingly or unknowingly breaks one of the many rules they could
be audited by the IRS and if caught the entire IRA becomes immediately taxable as ordinary
income. The most important rule is that the investor must keep his personal funds separate from
their IRA funds. Most professionals agree it is important to consult an attorney and a CPA to
facilitate the creation of a self directed IRA. For the investors who fell the risk of an IRS audit is
too great and are looking for more protection of their other assets, if they find themselves involved

Corporations and partnerships have traditionally served as the forms of organization from which
business owners could choose. Recently, state statutes have begun to recognize a new form of
business organization, the limited liability company (LLC). First recognized by state statute in
1977, the LLC is a hybrid

Theme Of The Lionet In Romeo And Juliet
During the seven years Shakespeare attended King Edward VI Grammar School, he read the
infamous Pyramus and Thisbe written by Ovid. Shakespeare later wrote the most well known,
relatable and timeless play of all time, Romeo and Juliet. The ill fated stories about the death
marked love between two love struck teenagers, are far too similar to ignore. Beneath the surface
of love, betrayal, death and memorable lessons lies an abundance of symbolism. Of the many, there
are three symbols of which are the most notable and significant to the overall theme of the two
stories: the cloak, the wall and the lioness. The cloak denotes Balthasar in Romeo and Juliet . The
argument has been made that it represents the letter that never reached Mantua,... Show more

While there is a volume of symbolism between these two stories, and the most affluential are: the
cloak, the wall, and the lioness. These ideas are not new, neither Shakespeare or Ovid invented the
idea of prohibited love, distracted teenagers or miscommunication. These components influence the
paths of the four, young, innocent lovers more than anything. The way Shakespeare weaved these
hidden elements and brought them to life in his Romeo and Juliet are truly marvelous. The plot of
the story is nothing special, but the underlining meanings bring a new perspective to lovers, parents,
friends and enemies. That is the true genius of

Lehman Brothers as the biggest bankruptcy case in the US history and the events that followed.
The first part of the paper reviews factors that led to the failure and consequently the bankruptcy
event. Some of the causes leading to the crisis, namely the market for Credit Default Swaps

THE BANKRUPTCY OF LEHMAN BROTHERS Causes of the Failure There is no single cause
that led to the failure of Lehman Brothers. There were numerous causes and agents that led to the
disaster, including greedy Wall Street traders, the debt load of American households, the Fed s
action, rating agencies, and last but not least, the
4
deregulation (Morin and Maux, 2011). These factors were responsible for the crisis of credit and
not solely the failure of Lehman Brothers. Still, the market of Credit Default Swaps was one of
the biggest factors dedicating to the catastrophe, if not the biggest one as Lehman was heavily
involved in that market. In explaining the sub prime market, Morin and Maux (2011) explain that
sub prime loans refer to inferior quality (sub) real estate loans whose higher risk of payment default
is countered by the bank with a higher interest rate. These mortgage loans, granted at variable
rates, were extended to American households with modest incomes (p. 41). Morin and Maux
(2011) also discuss Lehman s involvement in that particular market as well as how Lehman caused
erosion in that market at the same time: The bank is accused of having sold Collateralized Debt
Obligations (CDOs) to its clients and taking short positions that effectively eroded the value of these

in the Sepik River, Papua New Guinea. The film s producer/director is Dennis O Rourke. 2.The era
of the film is 1978. With symbolism, intense observation and interesting humour, Cannibal Tours
eliminates the cultural assumptions with these tribespeople by talking and interviewing them to
investigate how they feel about their lifestyle and the tourists that come to visit. It explores the
differences and similarities between civilized and primitive people. 3.Historical Context:
Throughout the film, there are a lot of references and short voiceovers or clips of things that are
related to the implementation of postmodernity. I believe it s trying to symbolize the attempt
society makes to suppress bad memories of genocides on which modernity was built. Hence, the
ambition behind this postmodernity is to try and stop history. But, it is not possible to repress the
past without denying the future. Therefore, the neglect continues throughout the film. Political
Context: In the Sepik River tribe community, there isn t much of a government type leader. The
people live to their own rules and do as they think is correct. A majority of the community is run by
income from the tourists and thus from this, the society thrives. Economic Context: The European

The Impact Tolerances Of Decision Making
Abstract
This paper is designed to help you understand and examines the impact tolerances of decision
making. It also provides an explanation for and insight into the observed differences in executive
responses to cyber threats and risk assessments. It models the relationship between security
resources and risk mitigation, and it defines the premiums that organizations expect to receive or
pay for bearing or avoiding information security risk (Anderson, 2010). In addition, this paper also
discusses various defense mechanisms and strategies that could be enabled on routers in order to
mitigate these cyber attacks.

many various online security threats that are occurring and that have occurred. DoS attacks have
the most damaging and devastating effects. This puts an extreme amount of pressure on security
experts to have strong and effective techniques put in place to defend against these attacks. These
particular cyber attacks can be implemented quite diversely with a variety of tools, codes, and
proper procedures. There really is no true solution for DoS attacks, which have been tormenting

Joni E. Johnston Psy.D. Writes in an article in Psycology today that since the 1970 s research has
consistently reported childhood cruelty towards animals as the first warning sign of later
delinquency, violence and criminal behaviour. In fact nearly all violent perpetrators have a history
of animal cruelty in their profiles. Albert de Salvo, the Boston Strangler found guilty of killing 13
women, shot arrows through dogs and cats he trapped as a child. Colombine shooters Eric Harris
and Dylan Klebold boasted about mutilating animals for fun.
Obviously cruelty towards animals is of great concern to psychologists in human behaviour in its
developing stages and prove to be a warning sign of things to come. Should we not then look more
closely at ourselves when we are adults, fully formed human beings and ask ourselves if it is just
as, in fact much more disconcerting and disturbing, when we so ruthlessly harm animals. If a

An Example Of A Vampire Tradition In The Gothic Novel
a.Vampire tradition in the gothic novel The term gothic is a popular style raised in the 18th

from this one we go to Melmoth, the Wanderer by Charles R. Marturin in 1820. The gothic novel

3.1.2 Price Starbucks follows a premium pricing strategy. This pricing strategy takes advantage

Starbucks is not only a high priced coffee shop but it offers a combination of quality, authority,

How Short and Long Term Memory Work Essay
Short and Long Term Memory Your brain collects and forgets thousands, if not millions of
memories every day. Every time you see, hear, feel, taste, and smell something, it comes into your
mind and becomes a memory. A mental note is literally taken and shipped to your short term
memory file in your brain. Whether or not it gets pushed to long termmemorydepends on how often
you pull the sense from your brain, because if it is used often, your brain will automatically
instruct itself not to destroy it. If you resurface those memories often enough, they will not be
erased. Memory, whether short or long term, is able to be reinforced, altered, deleted, or resurfaced.

are limitations to it, of course. George Miller, PhD, tested and figured that people can generally
not remember something over seven digits long (while it is in short term memory). These
remembrances can be sent long term after increased repetition and recall. The average short
term memory IQ is 49, which is somewhat low. Some people say that long term memory is more
beneficial than short term, which is not necessarily true. This kind of memory is not preserved
for extended periods of time, but also profitable. The best way to recall items in your short term
memory is to chunk it up into words or numbers for example, try to remember the letters i g d b f d
n o n u c a. This is difficult for everyone. Now, chunk it up into words: c o u n f b a d d i n g. It
helps, and is easier to remember! Short term memory is a useful tool with many benefits.
What Does Your Long Term Memory Do? Memories are exported to long term when they are
reinforced. Long term memory is a system in your brain that permanently stores senses for later
use. Unlike short term memory, these memories cannot be retrieved quickly and may take a few
seconds or longer to retrieve. There is a debate constantly on whether or not you can forget
something in your long term memory. Most say that long term memory only decays not forgotten,

Essay On Londonwood
There are many wonderful reasons to visit England: its lush, green landscapes, its rich history
and, of course, the landmarks of London. But, first and foremost, England is part of the island of
Great Britain, which means it is filled with beautiful, authentic seaside towns just waiting to be
discovered. Whether a traveler is seeking breathtaking views, fresh local seafood or a frothy pint
of beer at a charming village pub, the English coast has it all. Here are eight towns along the
English coast that offer visitors a taste of authentic England: 1. With its distinctive north and south

towns, Ilfracombe stands out. Founded in the Iron Age... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, over the last decade, Margate has reinvented itself as an artsy beach community that
still pays homage to its past. The tiny lanes of Old Town exude a quaint old English charm,
while the shops themselves give off a funky modern vibe. Meanwhile, formerly closed Dreamland
theme park has been resurrected as a retro amusement destination, keeping true to its roots as the
U.K. s original pleasure park with historic rides and classic sideshows. 5. At a glance, vibrant,
LGBT friendly Brighton, Sussex, tilts toward the modern, with its looming i360 observation tower
and a neon flashing pier rumbling with amusement rides. However, a walk through the shops,
restaurants and pubs that line Brighton s famous, maze like 18th century Lanes feels like a trip

Of all the seaside places to visit in England, Whitstable, Kent, may offer the best seafood. Known

The Idea Of Jesus Dying For Sin
Is the idea of Jesus dying for sin barbaric or outmoded ? (Choose one.) Why or why not? I
disagree with the idea of Jesus dying for sin as being an outmoded concept. Throughout history,
we see over and over again of people giving up everything, including their lives, for the greater
good. A person dying for what they believe in is not outdated, but the actual act of dying in such a
horrific way, however, is barbaric in its nature. The entire crucifixion is one of many disgusting acts
that humanity has done to each other. I m taking the phrase outmoded to mean outdated and no
longer relevant to our world today. The phrase barbaric means to be exceedingly cruel, brutal, and
atrocious in its very nature. According to the Bible,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me. 2 This sounds eerily like the type of
execution that Jesus endured. For him, there was no question of enduring that kind of pain in
order to save the people. Despite the question of Jesus truly being the Messiah, he fully believed
that he was sent to bring about the Kingdom of God and fulfill the covenant. Historically, the
time period that Jesus was sentence to a crucifixion was reserved for the serious criminals. Rick
Renner analyzed the facts surrounding the death of Jesus Christ. He stated Crucifixion was
indisputably one of the cruelest and most barbaric forms of punishment in the ancient world.
Flavius Josephus, the Jewish historian, described crucifixion as the most wretched of deaths. It
was viewed with such horror that in one of Seneca s letters to Lucilius, Seneca wrote that suicide
was preferable to crucifixion. Getting into some of the gory details, Jesus literally had a five
inch iron nail through each wrist into the wood of the crossbeam. Then he was hoisted up with a
rope that dropped into a groove creating even more pain in the hands and wrists. The weight of
his body caused his arms to pop out of their sockets. Then the feet were nailed down as well.
Slowly, all of his joints would dislocate. When he was finally too exhausted and could no longer

The Era of Good Stealings
Jim Fisk and Jay Gould created a plot to raise the price of gold in the market in 1869.
They did so by buying and hoarding tons of gold and jacking up the prices dramatically
The Treasury was forced to sell gold from its reserves to lower the price
September 24 1869 was then known as Black Friday
Boss Tweed used bribes and fake elections to steal almost $200 million from NY
He was imprisoned eventually on fraud and graft charges
A Carnival of Corruption

Essay on The Effects of Television Violence on Children
The Effects of Television Violence on Children
According to the Article ?Violence on Television? published by the American Psychological
Association at the website http://www.apa.org/pubinfo/violence.html, ?violent programs on
television lead to aggressive behavior by children and teenagers who watch those programs.? That
s the word from a 1982 report by the National Institute of Mental Health, a report that confirmed
and extended an earlier study done by the Surgeon General. As a result of these and other research
findings, the American Psychological Association passed a resolution in February 1985 informing
broadcasters and the public of the potential dangers that viewing violence on television can have for
children. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The researchers noticed real differences between the kids who watched the violent shows and
those who watched nonviolent ones. According to Aletha Huston, Ph.D., ?children who watch
the violent shows, even just funny cartoons, were more likely to hit out at their playmates,
argue, disobey class rules, leave tasks unfinished, and were less willing to wait for things than
those who watched the nonviolent programs.? Findings from the laboratory are further
supported by field studies, which have shown the long range effects of televised violence.
Leonard Eron, Ph.D., and his associates at the University of Illinois, found that children who
watched many hours of TV violence when they were in elementary school tended to also show a
?higher level of aggressive behavior? when they became teenagers. By observing these
youngsters until they were 30 years old, Dr. Eron found that the ones who ?had watched a lot of
TV when they were eight years old were more likely to be arrested and prosecuted for criminal acts
as adults?.
Television does influence children, however parents have tremendous power to moderate that
influence. Because there is a great deal of violence in both adult and children s programming, just
limiting the number of hours children watch television will probably

Negative Effects Of Imperialism
Imperialism was an extremely big deal throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. There
were many occurrences where people who were involved in imperialism would succeed, but there
were also failures. Throughout this time period, powers from Europe, the United States and Japan
all contributed to both the positive and negative impacts of imperialism. These impacts affected
parts of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Some of the few people that made huge changes during
the Age of Imperialism are Dadabha Naoroji, J.A. Hobson, Mary Kingsley, Edgar Canisius, Albert
Beveridge, and Rudyard Kipling.
Dadabha Naoroji was involved in many things but one of the most important was that he was a
founder of the Indian National Congress. The Indian National Congress was a political
organization that led efforts for independence and is a major political platform in India. During
Naoroji s involvement in politics, he became the first Indian member of the House of Commons.
While in office, Naoroji attempted to improve Britain s policies toward India and eventually
succeeded. He wanted many things for the British rule such as the abolition of practicing widow
burning, to emphasize the importance of education, and he also wanted the development of
railways and irrigation. Naoroji goes on to say that he succeeded in almost all of these things and
that the British accepted them, making the impact of imperialism positive. In this situation, the

Beach Erosion In Virginia Beach
Erosion has the ability to ruin large buildings or simply be an inconvenience to someone. Erosion
happens gradually and it happens by wind or water breaking pieces of an object. Humans are said
to have made the process faster. We are tearing trees and dirt and replace it with infrastructure.
Tearing down nature makes erosionmore liable. Since we have learned how we speed up erosion
and how erosion is bad for our creations, we can use that knowledge to know how to handle those
problems. First of all, farmers or gardeners acknowledge erosion and take into consideration of
how to deal with it. When farmers or gardeners plough their plants, the topsoil can easily be
eroded with wind or run offs. This can create problems for local streams or for the soil. People
learned to use other plants like bushes to counter wind erosion, also know as windbreak .... Show

If any architecture is structured poorly, erosion can easily contribute with destroying it.
Architects have to design a building in a way that will be sturdy to complications like erosion.
Lastly, in Virginia Beach, shoreline erosion is a main issue that is hard to counter. A temporary
way to manage beach erosion is by beach nourishment . Beach nourishment is replacing sand, that
was lost by erosion. It a controversial solution, but it is one of the most popular way to solve
beach erosion. It is impossible to stop erosion altogether because it is a natural occurrence.
Fortunately, humans have figured ways to handle erosion and even to use it to our advantage at
times. Without erosion the Grand Canyon, one of the seven natural wonders of the world, and the
Niagara Falls would not exist. Erosion may be troublesome to people, but erosion was not meant for

The On The Path Of Success
A single key can open the door to many opportunities in life. Whether it is the keys to a new
apartment, or the key to someone s heart, all of these things are different achievements that
foreshow that someone is on the right track to a successful life. The main key to being successful
in life is based on execution and the environment someone is in as well. But of course there are
many other factors that to lead to the path of success, and the only to know what those elements are
is to continue reading this essay until the end. The factors that lead to the path of success are a
little something that I like to call the 3 k s. Execution and environmental influences begin to
affect a person s life at one of the earliest stages of schooling, kindergarten, which is the first k. In
kindergarten kids are still young, moldable, and absorb everything around them like a sponge.
To explain how kindergarten connects to a successful life, I will give you my experience of
being in this grade level. My mom was very involved in my school work and in my life in
general. Although my father was also very supportive as well, it was my mother that took it upon
herself to be involved with my school, track my progression, help me with my school work, and
carefully select the school and teachers I would be with. With the constant involvement of my
mother helping me to get the proper education and self motivation I needed, it helped me to

Robert Hare Without Conscience Summary
This non fictional, eye opener book, Without Conscience (New York: The Guilford Press, 1993)
by Dr. Robert Hare, is an account of his years as a prison psychologist and everyday life
encounters with psychopaths. The next 25 years he would spend conducting empirical research,
which led to the development of the answer to his question, What is the psychological makeup
that give a psychopath the power to override reality without compunction? Is it nature or nurture?
Dr. Hare s quest to unravel the true origin of these individuals, he first focused on who they are
and their behaviors. He described, clarified and captivated the personality traits and socially
deviant behaviors of a psychopath. Importantly, this book served as a guide in knowing how to
protect oneself if ever cross paths with a psychopath.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hare could not definitively conclude that either ones biological factors or social forces made a
person a psychopath, he rather believed it is an interplay between the both and their ability to

if not impossible to treat, because they themselves believe that they have no psychological or
emotional problems. When Dr. Hare s prison experience was over he continued his profession of
psychiatry, he postulated that a psychopath is not only for prisoners but for all people.
One of my reactions to this book was the Psychopathy Checklist, which Dr. Hare created as a tool
for discovering psychopaths are egocentric and have no feelings of empathy, guilt or remorse.
They view others as potential victims, and they leave a trail of unhappiness behind them in those
who have given in to their deceitful manipulations. Dr. Hare challenges stereotypical beliefs of
psychopaths and reveal who they really are and how he/she presents. He described a psychopath
not by physical appearance, but mostly by their innate

Stigmatization Of Mental Illnesses Essay
A stigma is a distinguishing mark, establishing a border between a stigmatized person and others
attributing negative characteristics to this person. (Baumann, 2007) There are many different
factors that take part in the stigmatization of mental illnesses, however the greatest contributor is
the social distance that is created within society between individuals with a mental illness and
those without. There are two mind sets that can increase a person s willingness to socially distance
themselves from the mentally ill. The first mindset is that mentally ill individuals are different and
therefore should be separated. The second mindset is that mentally ill individuals are perceived as
violent and this creates a need for separation with regards... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

(Feldman and Crandall, 2007) Society has a want to protect themselves from anything they see
as a dangerous. The common idea that people that have a mental illness are dangerous is
creating a division in the world. Although the ideas may be false it is very difficult to change a
popular opinion. Since the 1950 s American s have increased the belief that mental illnesses
cause the mentally ill to become violent. (Feldman and Crandall, 2007) To change these popular
beliefs and reduce the stigmatization around mental illness it is necessary to bring more
awareness to all mental illnesses. The social distancing disconnects people and does not allow
for society to see how a mental illness affects an individual. The false popular opinions are all that
people really know about mental illnesses. People suffering from mental illnesses are isolated and
viewed as strangers in society. They are viewed as dangerous or aggressive, which increases the
likelihood of being discriminated against. These two factors will lead to social distancing, which is
the greatest contributor of the stigmatization of mental illness. Without creating awareness of
mental illnesses, the stigmatization is likely to remain the same and there will always be a
separation between those with a mental illness and those

MK Ultra was a project formed by the CIA as a mind control program ( Project MKULTRA,
2016). This program implemented a new way to interrogate by using torture and drugs such as
marijuana and LSD ( Project MKULTRA, 2016). The reason for these tactics were to weaken
the individual so the agency could get a confession through mind control ( Id, 2016). Headed by
Dr. Sidney Gottlieb, MK Ultra was started officially on the order of CIA director Allen Welsh
Dulles on April 13, 1953 ( Id, 2016). The goal was to develop mind controlling drugs for use
against the Soviet bloc in response to the allegations that North Korea, China, and the Soviet Union

Although sometimes top officials at these institutions were aware of the CIA s involvement,
most often the CIA operated through these institutions using front organizations ( Id, 2016).
They also conducted business through other organizations by having subprojects ( Id, 2016).
These projects were the research that most did not know MK Ultra was driving ( Id, 2016).
Some of these subcontracts were also through colleges ( Id, 2016). Project MK Ultra was first
brought to public attention by anonymous tips ( Id, 2016). Because of those tips, in 1975 the
Church Committee of the U.S. Congress and Gerald Ford began to investigate CIA activities
within the United States ( Id, 2016). Investigative efforts were initially hampered by the fact that
CIA Director Richard Helms ordered all MK Ultra files destroyed in 1973; however, the Church
Committee and Rockefeller Commission investigations relied on both the sworn testimony of
direct participants and on the relatively small number of documents that survived Helms
destruction order ( Id, 2016). One 1955 MK Ultra document gives an indication of the size and
range of the effort; this document refers to the study of an assortment of mind altering substances (

experiments today. Once Project MK Ultra officially got underway in April 1953, experiments

Scientific Principles Of The Work Of Wilhelm Wundt Essay
This essay will look at scientific principles used today to perform psychological research and find
similarities and differences of that research style in the work of Wilhelm Wundt; this will be done
through looking at his approach to psychology, his lab and the impact he had on psychology in
general. The essay will then consider the Gestaltists approach to psychologyby looking at their main
beliefs, experiments and their legacy and link it to the scientific principles. Finally, it will
summarize the influence both Wundt and the Gestaltists had on establishing psychology as a
science.
Scientific principles describe the steps of psychological research, how the understanding of
behaviour is assessed, how variables are defined and data can be received.
The psychological research consists of seven steps as can be seen in figure 1.
Figure 1 (Passer, Smith, Holt, 2010, pp. 40 41)
The scientific principles also consist out of how approaches to understanding behaviour are made:
through prediction, control and theory building as well as how variables are defined and data to
measure behaviour can be received.
The first academic to look at is Wilhelm Wundtby applying the scientific principles to his work and
his contribution to establish psychology as a science. Wilhelm Wundt (1832 1920) was a German
physician who became interested in applying the physiological methods to psychological
phenomena and wanted to model the study of the mind after the natural sciences. (Passer et

The Standards Of Society In The House Of The Spirits By...
It is often said that we are shaped by our environments; we all interact with our surroundings in
some form or another, and we are further influenced by and interact with the society we live in. In
fiction, characters interact the same way within their fictional societies and social positions, as
characters reflect how actual people relate to their world. In the novel The House of the Spirits by
Isabel Allende, there exist many societal norms and standards that influence the characters and
their actions in different ways. This essay focuses on these standards and how they relate to the
character of FГ©rula Trueba, and her position in the society she lives in. Allende s novel The
House of the Spirits takes place in the religious and patriarchal society of 20th Century Chile, where
the character FГ©rula embraces religious austerity and internalizes her role as caretaker, resulting
in embitterment and repression of her feelings.
The setting of the novel begins in the early 20th century, in the Capital, where both the del Valle
family and the Trueba family reside. The Capital is inferred to be in the country of Chile. Many of
the standards of the society are first shown through the del Valle family and the central character,
Esteban Trueba. It is clear that this society emphasizes reputation and morality, and that it is deeply
religious; Severo del Valle is atheist, but both him and his family attend Catholic Mass because he
could not allow himself the luxury of missing the

The earliest inhabitants of Mexico are believed to have been hunters who migrated from Asia
approximately 18,000 years ago. Over time they built organized civilizations with distinct cultures

in the fields of art, architecture, mathematics, astronomy, and agriculture. In 1517 the Spanish

In the Spring of 1846 American forces quickly occupied New Mexico and California, then invaded
parts of Northeastern Mexico, Northwest Mexico and captured Mexico City. In the fall of 1847 the

the Qin s northern territories. This wall is known as The Great Wall of China. Qin Shi Huang
preferred to focus on connecting his empire instead of building relationships with outsiders. In his

Han leaders preferred to gift the Xiongu with extravagant gifts to persuade them from taking Han

Double In Gothic Literature Analysis
In literary criticism, the term double is defined as literary device that is used to directly
compare, and contrast, the familiar with the strange. Often, doubles are used in pieces of
literature to examine character traits, both positive and negative, as they are easier to identify
and analyze when presented in two different lights. Another, perhaps more identifiable, word for
double is doppelganger. The word doppelganger means look alike, or more literally, double
walker. Doubles are meant to bear striking physical similarities, if they do not look exactly
identical. Often meeting one s double brings about a certain realization of self. Doubles are often
prevalent in gothic literature, where strangeness and freakishness are two defining characteristics of
the genre. These two adjectives can also, very neatly, describe... Show more content on

The mere thought of having a physical double can be jarring or shocking. Meeting that double is
another idea all together. It is not something that most of us can fathom. However, it is the
strangeness or implausibility of this idea that makes it so intriguing. Something that so many
are eager to play with, especially in modern media. While the gothic genre has lost popularity in
recent years, mostly due to the fact its popularity stemmed from the ease in which it gave
authors to socially criticize the Victorian government, that does not mean the idea of the double
has gone obsolete. In fact, doubleness has gained a considerable amount of popularity in modern
media. Television shows like Orphan Black, The Vampire Diaries, Ringer, and many more focus
primarily on the idea of doubleness and what it means for the characters. The consequences of
having a double and the realization of self it brings about are at the forefront of the plots for these
television shows and many more. This essay will focus on doubleness in popular media,
particularly in terms of the quote from the Conrad piece, The Secret

The Picture Of Dorian Gray Essay
Artists of any art form tend to use real life experiences as their muse. Oscar Wilde was no
exception. In creating the story of The Picture of Dorian Gray, Wilde used his experience of
sitting in on a painting session, done by a Basil Ward. He then proceeded to comment on how it
would be amazing if the painting aged while the subject of the painting did not. Throughout the
novel, we notice this kind of lifestyle being lived out by Dorian and Lord Henry, but we also see
how Dorian handles his conscience based on his actions. The Picture of Dorian Grayis a novel that,
while it has its controversies over what its purpose is, is a novel that can function as an
appropriate text for a wide variety of classes (Waldrep; Smith II 53). Despite what Wilde believed,
practiced, and even the preface of the novel, Wilde wrote this novel as a lesson on morality.
Oscar Wilde s inspirations for writing The Picture of Dorian Gray comes from his own life. Oscar
Wilde himself practiced aestheticism, or pleasing the self. A literary critic of Wilde s work, Richard
Ellmann, observes Wilde s life as bent on a subversion of propriety and sobriety (1). He even used
Mr. Basil Ward s name for the character Basil Hallward (Wilde; Jullian; Lawler 406). He
frequently looked to satisfy his own desires, whether they were morally or socially acceptable. He
once was arrested for homosexuality, which was a crime in England at the time. Even Wilde s
encounters with his fellow writers prompted an

Disobedience And The Social Movements Of The Civil Rights...
Civil disobedience is present in our day to day lives. During the civil rights protests occurring in
Birmingham, AL, Eugene Connor was the Commissioner of Public Safety who publicly
attacked African Americans with fire hoses and dogs. The Boston Tea Party was a rebellion
which led to major tax reformation. Another moment in history of disobedience would be the
Civil Rights movement. Oscar Wilde claims social progress is promoted through disobedience
and rebellion which is valid. Disobedience and Rebellion are human traits that promote social
progress in our society. For example, the Civil Rights movement was a time where social equality
was not present and in order for it to be obtained, rebellion and disobedience had to be used. Rosa
Parkswas a civil rights activists who caused The Montgomery Bus Boycott. This event occurred
because Rosa Parks had rejected to give up her seat to a white person which was widely frowned
upon. The Montgomery Bus Boycott was a political protest that went against the segregation
policy of the transport system and occurred from December 5, 1955 to December 20, 1956. On
all city transportation in Montgomery, African Americans were to remain in the back of all
trains and buses so whenever Rosa Parks had sat in the front it caused major upheaval. Many
people had claimed that Rosa Parks didn t give up her seat because she was tired but according to
Rosa Parks, I was not tired physically, or no more tired than I usually was at the end of a

Liberal Party Reforms
The Conservatives did more than the Liberal Party to advance the cause of reform in the period
1866 to 1885 Explain why you agree or disagree with this statement. During the period from 1866
until 1885 the electorate widened significantly from 1.3 million voters to 5.5 million. There were
many factors in the rising demand for Parliamentary reform such as; an increasing population,
internal migration, Radical and Trade Union campaigns, American Civil War, an economic
depression and the visit of Garibaldi. Alongside the extension of the franchise the political voting
system became far less corrupt and therefore results were a better representation of the people s
beliefs. The Conservative and Liberal Parties were the most influential throughout... Show more

In 1866 the Liberals failed to pass a very limited reform bill which would have enfranchised
400,000 men with no proposal to redistribute parliamentary seats. Although the bill was only
limited it would have still secured a change yet the Conservatives opposed it as it is still theirs,
and not ours, and will give them control of the boroughs for half a dozen years to come Disraeli.
Under Gladstone s Liberal Government there was a period of great electoral reform 1872 85.
Firstly, in The Ballot Act 1872 was passed. The Act made voting secret and therefore reduced
bribery and corrupt practices greatly, especially in Ireland, but not completely as there were ways
of buying votes e.g. buying a beer. However, it was not introduced by the Government, but by
Edward Aldam Leatham, brother in law of John Bright, in a Private Member s Bill, although we
cannot commend the Government for passing the bill Latham was a member of the Liberal Party.
In 1883 the Government introduced The Corrupt and Illegal Practices Act which was supported by
Gladstone. The Act removed corruption during general elections. Bribery and treating was
prohibited, limits were set on the amount of money candidates were able to spend daunting a
constituency election campaign and agents and candidates would be legally liable for any
violations of the law. This Act was

Our Group Surveyed Homeless Individuals To Find Out What
Our group surveyed homeless individuals to find out what needs they thought were most
important. We walked around downtown Asheville near Vance Memorial Park, Library and other
parts of downtown to understand the environment the homeless live daily. I could only invest two
hours on the project due to the lack of communication with BeLoved and finding ways of
transportation that will work around everyone s schedule. My next steps are to provide a data
analysis on the information we collected. 2) Individually, people find themselves engaged in a
variety of social environments and based on experiences of overlapping environments that

It gives us the sense to connect with others on a more interactive level. It allows us to become
active people in the community and become the voice for others. For example, watching
members of Asheville city council and voice opinions about how the community should help
provide services for the homeless. When several community members voice the same concerns,
this helps unite a community under a purpose. From experiences, I have learned that people who
see others help will most likely help if there are a strong structure and a mission behind it.
BeLoved has done that for others. It has provided shelter, a safe place, food, clothes and most of
all, love and faith for everyone that comes to BeLoved. The definition of being homeless can mean
many things to different people. Some may think homeless are lazy people who are just
unemployed or criminals trying to steal from others, or one would be sympathetic to their living
conditions and they might have had a bad past that resulted in homeless. I think it is amazing to see
that one word can have different meanings, after all this culture. Culture is how we create an
understanding of socioeconomic status and practice our own interpretation. Therefore, culture is
changeable depending on the structure. This allows us to see the struggles of healthcare among the
homeless one way; however, the government can

Why Did Kitty Genovese s Neighbors Fail For Take Action...
On March 13, 1964, a woman named Kitty Genovese was stabbed repeatedly while several
neighbors were vaguely aware of the unfolding events occurring outside. The lack of action on the
neighbors part led to Genovese dying shortly after. Why did Kitty Genovese s neighbors fail to take
action quickly?
The psychologists John Darley and Bibb LatanГ© (1968) were interested in the Genovese incident
and sought to find the answer to this psychological phenomenon. In their experiment, Darley and
LatanГ© hypothesized that the higher number of bystanders would decrease helping behavior and
vice versa. The two manipulated the number of confederates during each trial and recorded the
time it took for the participants to report the simulated seizure. Their results confirmed that if were
more confederates, each participant would feel less pressured to help, leading to the discovery of
the bystander effect.
The bystander effect is defined as the higher the number of people who notice an emergency, the
less of a chance that those bystanders will help the victim (as cited in Aronson, Wilson, Akert,
Sommers, 2015). The importance of the bystander effect is unparalleled because it determines
whether humans will still help in a situation when there are other people available. Bystanders can
deal with situations ranging from the mundane to the dire, but what matters is the number of those
who take action.
Inspired by the Genovese case, my partner and I wanted to see if the Tufts community, which

Dinosaurs And Birds Essay
Dinosaurs and Birds
Are birds really dinosaurs or are they simply related? That is a question that has gained new life
in recent years due to the overwhelming facts the are pouring in from newly found fossils and
studies from fossils that have been found in the past. Two groups have formed in the study of this
question: those who believe birds are a direct result of dinosaurs and those who feel dinosaurs and
birds must have had a common ancestor. Determining which view is correct is a matter of opinion
based on fact. The main problem involves the use of cladistics or phylogenetic systematics to group
organisms according to characteristics they share. When one looks at dinosaur fossils, he or she

Also, support is gaining that Archaeopteryx was not in fact the first bird, but instead a descendent
of an earlier bird ancestor that had developed along a different pathway and actually represents an
evolutionary dead end.
Two opponents of the birds are dinosaurs theory are Alan Feduccia of the University of North
Carolina and Larry Martin of the University of Kansas. They believe that birds evolved from
some unknown reptile from a time before dinosaurs came to be. One point they make is that flight
must have begun from tree climbing or an arboreal ancestor but that all the proposed dinosaurian
ancestors were ground dwellers or cursorial On the other side, supporters for the birds are
dinosaurs theory feel there is an unknown dinosaur bird that was arboreal, or simply that birds
evolved flight from the ground by chasing after insects.
In recent years other fossil finds have stirred the argument even more. One of these is the fossil
named Sinosauroptyrex found in China. It appears to be an important link between birds and
dinosaurs. Sinosauropteryx appears to be a feathered dinosaur having a mane of feathers along its
neck, back, and tail a feature until then seen only in birds. Sinosauroptyrex appears before
Archaeopteryx and gives a substantial link between the theropods and birds. One opponent of this

Foreshadowing In Oedipus The King
Foreshadowing is a tool used by playwrights and authors of all types as a means to direct the
audience into a path of questioning and intrigue throughout the course of a novel or play. After
reading both of these theatrical works, it struck me just how often I dismiss/fail to acknowledge
the big red flags stuck within the ground of the text and thus proceed to give myself incredibly
undeserved credit at the end of every reading for having figured out what was going to happen all
by myself . Therefore, I have taken it upon myself to examine the importance of this technique in
order to credit the playwrights and show how their use of foreshadowing creates tension, credibility
and a specific atmosphere in both of their fictitious worlds. Oedipus... Show more content on

which the provision of knowledge in this play and the lack of it in Oedipus the King are both
capable of maintaining the curiosity of a spectator. However, I would also like to point out that
each tactic is suited to the genre of the play i.e. you want to keep the audience informed as to what

Similarities Between The Christian Rosary And The Buddhist...
A religious individual may most gloriously carry out his or her own rituals, as a part of his or her
cultural identity, but the moment, that person starts to build a wall of separation between the self
and the rest of humanity, coaxed by the textual commands of a scripture, the healthy religiousness
turns into dangerous fundamentalism, which is a threat to both the self and the society. (Abhijit
Naskar). In the recent history of our society, the actions of religious extremists have driven people
apart, and hatred has grown from a lack of ecumenism between those of different faiths. By
focusing on the differences between religions, and not on the latent similarities that inherently exist
between different faiths, people become blinded to how various religions are all rooted in the same
philosophies. However, by focusing on the similarities of different religion, through philosophies,
rituals, or teachings, we can then learn how to tear down walls, grow as people, and become
cognitive of our joint humanity. With the necessity of ecumenical relations in our community, it
serves humans to see the similarities between the faiths that can divide us. On such similarity exists
between the rituals of the Christian Rosary and the Buddhist tradition of PrayerWheels, both are
physical guides for repetitive prayers and personal reflection and meditation. The Catholic tradition
of the Rosary is a long held practice of Marian prayer which dates back millennia. The tradition of

What Is Arjuna Wrong In The Bhagavad Gita

Krishna proved Arjunawrong in a very convincing way. To begin, one point or reason that Krishna

future. He makes it a point to tell Arjuna that when we die, only the physical body dies, and the
soul lives forever. That being said Arjuna could kill them at peace knowing that they will still have

Analysis Of Through It All By Giselle Mills
The book Through It All is a novel written by a Caribbean author named Giselle Mills. The book
is based on the life of a Caribbean family. The family resides in the Caribbean island of Nevis.
The characters in the book face various situations and events that leave major impacts on their
lives. The novel has a main plot and a sub plot that are both linked to the family. The main plot is
that of the protagonist of the novel, Andreide D Averette. Andreide is a sixteen year old girl who
goes to a public school and is the daughter of Rose Marie D Averette, a psychiatrist and Charles
D Averette a landscaper. She also has two brothers; seventeen year ten year old Omarion and old
Marques. The sub plot however, was that of Andreide s mother Rose Marie. Rose Marie was the
matriarch of her family and a successful psychiatrist and an establishing author. It highlighted Rose
Marie s trials and tribulations as a successful working woman, mother and wife. The novel also
highlighted various occurrences that linked their similarities to the past and the present times or
modern era. These occurrences include but are not limited to the judgement of socio economic
status, raceand racism and gender margins.

The Rebirth Of A Forgotten Virtue By Daniel Akst
In the pugnacious article Thrift: The Rebirth of a Forgotten Virtue, the writer Daniel Akst uncovers
the characterization and slant of the utilization of thrift. Throughout the article, Akst gives a few
perspectives and cases of certain powerful individuals and their perspectives. Alongside the different
perspectives of the individuals, there are numerous quotes from well respected people. When Akst
uncovers his actual position on thrift towards the closure of his factious article, he trusts that thrift
makes solidness. The targeted group that Akst aims for is the general population of money
spenders in America. His intention of composing this article is to advise individuals about thrift and
that by thrifting you make budgetary opportunity. The rhetorical analysis strategies that will be
exemplified are pathos, as well as logos. Daniel Akst is successful in his contention that thrift makes
opportunity with illustrations of hurried speculations, quotes of persuasive individuals and
measurable proof. The strategy used by Akst as a part of his factious article is pathos, which is
used to helped persuade his audience through his use of logical reasoning. The use of pathos
throughout the article shows faith in how Americans burns through cash and how they ought to
burn through cash. To the extent that thrift produces wealth, it breeds envy (511). Akst is claiming
that riches breeds or creates envy in everybody naturally. Akst does not bolster his claim that riches

President s Influence In America
In the United States of America the president is viewed as the most powerful and influential
individual in the country or even in the world. As citizens of the United States we often believe
that the president has an incredible amount of power and is held accountable for the current state
of the economy. Each presidential election can easily be thought as a defining moment for
America, because of the amount of power we believe the president holds. His special abilities
such as the power to veto are greatly recognized as acts of great power and often cause his
influence on the economy to be overestimated. Although the president has great military power and

proves to be a difficult task as demonstrated by President Nixon. During his presidency Nixon tried
easing Cold War tensions. He tried to use improved relations with the Soviets and Chinese to

  • 2. Gateway To Medicine Personal Statement During my four years at Brooklyn Technical High School, I was part of the Gateway to Medicine program. I was introduced to courses such as anatomy physiology, organic chemistry, and biology. These extremely challenging classes piqued my interest to explore a future career in health care. The Gateway to Medicineprogram was multi faceted, I went from dissecting cats to learning about spontaneous de combustion. My guidance counselor also helped prepare me to choose a career in the medical profession. After graduating from Brooklyn Tech, I decided to enroll in Hunter College because of their competitive nursing program. However, after spending my first year at Hunter taking pre requisite courses needed for consideration into the program, I was rejected due to a C+ in Statistics. This created a slight detour in my college career, but it spurred me to want to work harder to achieve my goal. In the years that followed, I retook a different statistics class and received an A. I also enrolled in more challenging courses such as Psychology of Cancer, Calculus and Research Methods in Developmental Psychology.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All of these experiences had one thing in common, patients who were of lower socioeconomic status were not treated as well as, patients who were of higher socioeconomic status. It was devastating to see individuals with severe health issues be turned away due to inability to afford proper health care. THE BANKRUPTCY OF LEHMAN BROTHERS Causes of the Failure There is no single cause that led to the failure of Lehman Brothers. There were numerous causes and agents that led to the disaster, including greedy Wall Street traders, the debt load of American households, the Fed s action, rating agencies, and last but not least, the 4 deregulation (Morin and Maux, 2011). These factors were responsible for the crisis of credit and not solely the failure of Lehman Brothers. Still, the market of Credit Default Swaps was one of the biggest factors dedicating to the catastrophe, if not the biggest one as Lehman was heavily involved in that market. In explaining the sub prime market, Morin and Maux (2011) explain that sub prime loans refer to inferior quality (sub) real estate loans whose higher risk of payment default is countered by the bank with a higher interest rate. These mortgage loans, granted at variable rates, were extended to American households with modest incomes (p. 41). Every time you see, hear, feel, taste, and smell something, it comes into your mind and becomes a memory. A mental note is literally taken and shipped to your short term memory file in your brain. Whether or not it gets pushed to long termmemorydepends on how often you pull the sense from your brain, because if it is used often, your brain will automatically instruct itself not to destroy it. If you resurface those memories often enough, they will not be erased. Memory, whether short or long term, is able to be reinforced, altered, deleted, or resurfaced. Figure 1 (Passer, Smith, Holt, 2010, pp. 40 41) The scientific principles also consist out of how approaches to understanding behaviour are made: through prediction, control and theory building as well as how variables are defined and data to measure behaviour can be received. The first academic to look at is Wilhelm Wundtby applying the scientific principles to his work and his contribution to establish psychology as a science. Wilhelm Wundt (1832 1920) was a German physician who became interested in applying the physiological methods to psychological phenomena and wanted to model the study of the mind after the natural sciences. Undergraduate Admission Essay Undergraduate Admissions Department of interest: Industrial design I m drawn to design because it is everywhere and has the potential to affect so much of how people feel about a certain space or about an experience. From a young age, I was fortunate to be exposed to art; my parents would constantly take my brother and me to museums and galleries and at home, my grandmother would teach me skills such as crocheting, needlepoint and how to replicate food out of playdough. In both elementary school and middle school I drew and created little things such as bookmarks and stuffed animals, but I was never known as the art kid . • 34. The Standards Of Society In The House Of The Spirits By... It is often said that we are shaped by our environments; we all interact with our surroundings in some form or another, and we are further influenced by and interact with the society we live in. In fiction, characters interact the same way within their fictional societies and social positions, as characters reflect how actual people relate to their world. In the novel The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende, there exist many societal norms and standards that influence the characters and their actions in different ways. This essay focuses on these standards and how they relate to the character of FГ©rula Trueba, and her position in the society she lives in. Allende s novel The House of the Spirits takes place in the religious and patriarchal society of 20th Century Chile, where the character FГ©rula embraces religious austerity and internalizes her role as caretaker, resulting in embitterment and repression of her feelings. The setting of the novel begins in the early 20th century, in the Capital, where both the del Valle family and the Trueba family reside. The Capital is inferred to be in the country of Chile. Many of the standards of the society are first shown through the del Valle family and the central character, Esteban Trueba. It is clear that this society emphasizes reputation and morality, and that it is deeply religious; Severo del Valle is atheist, but both him and his family attend Catholic Mass because he could not allow himself the luxury of missing the ... Another, perhaps more identifiable, word for double is doppelganger. The word doppelganger means look alike, or more literally, double walker. Doubles are meant to bear striking physical similarities, if they do not look exactly identical. Often meeting one s double brings about a certain realization of self. In creating the story of The Picture of Dorian Gray, Wilde used his experience of sitting in on a painting session, done by a Basil Ward. He then proceeded to comment on how it would be amazing if the painting aged while the subject of the painting did not. Throughout the novel, we notice this kind of lifestyle being lived out by Dorian and Lord Henry, but we also see how Dorian handles his conscience based on his actions. The Picture of Dorian Grayis a novel that, while it has its controversies over what its purpose is, is a novel that can function as an appropriate text for a wide variety of classes (Waldrep; Smith II 53). Despite what Wilde believed, practiced, and even the preface of the novel, Wilde wrote this novel as a lesson on morality. Oscar Wilde s inspirations for writing The Picture of Dorian Gray comes from his own life. Oscar Wilde himself practiced aestheticism, or pleasing the self. A literary critic of Wilde s work, Richard Ellmann, observes Wilde s life as bent on a subversion of propriety and sobriety (1). On March 13, 1964, a woman named Kitty Genovese was stabbed repeatedly while several neighbors were vaguely aware of the unfolding events occurring outside. The lack of action on the neighbors part led to Genovese dying shortly after. Why did Kitty Genovese s neighbors fail to take action quickly? The psychologists John Darley and Bibb LatanГ© (1968) were interested in the Genovese incident and sought to find the answer to this psychological phenomenon. In their experiment, Darley and LatanГ© hypothesized that the higher number of bystanders would decrease helping behavior and vice versa. The two manipulated the number of confederates during each trial and recorded the time it took for the participants to report the simulated seizure. Their results confirmed that if were more confederates, each participant would feel less pressured to help, leading to the discovery of the bystander effect. The bystander effect is defined as the higher the number of people who notice an emergency, the less of a chance that those bystanders will help the victim (as cited in Aronson, Wilson, Akert, Sommers, 2015). The importance of the bystander effect is unparalleled because it determines whether humans will still help in a situation when there are other people available. (Abhijit Naskar). In the recent history of our society, the actions of religious extremists have driven people apart, and hatred has grown from a lack of ecumenism between those of different faiths. By focusing on the differences between religions, and not on the latent similarities that inherently exist between different faiths, people become blinded to how various religions are all rooted in the same philosophies.
