Brave New World and Dubliners
Brave New World, written by Aldous Huxley, is a thought provoking novel set in a future of
genetically engineered people, amazing technology and a misconstrued system of values.
Dubliners, written by James Joyce, is a collection of short stories painting a picture of life in
Dublin Ireland, near the turn of the 19th century. Though of two completely different settings and
story lines, these two works can and will be compared and contrasted on the basis of the social
concerns and issues raised within them. One of the first things stressed in Brave New Worldis the
idea that there is no real discrimination. Though it is true that there is a class system, the classes
are derived from the fact that people are genetically engineered... Show more content on

Especially if love can be defined as being comfortable and intimate with someone who accepts
one for who they are and all they stand for. If that were the case then in Brave New World, in a
convoluted way, every single person, in belonging to everyone else, also loves everyone else.
But as love can not be defined so simply, this is not true. The absence of love in Huxley #8217;s
novel is most obviously deliberate, just as the inclusion of love in certain pieces in Dubliners is
intentional. The reason it appears obvious is that Huxley goes to great lengths to describe his
world in great detail and yet does not mention love as a part of it. The reason love is brought to
bear as a social issue is that without it, imagine how bland things would be. For example, fine art
would have no passion, literature would contain no romance, music would be lifeless without
the soul behind it. All these things and more make love a thing of huge importance in life.
Michael Furey, in #8220;The Dead #8221; would not have had The Lass of Aughrim to sing, the
narrator of #8220;Araby #8221; would have had no reason to go to the bazaar, in fact, many of
the stories within Dubliners may never have been written. Love also plays a large role in family.
Within Dubliners, family is an important factor in various stories. One such story is #8220;Eveline
#8221;. Though it is true that in this situation, the family described may not be a precisely happy

Assessment And Evaluation Of Family Therapy
The objective of this paper is to provide the assessment and evaluation of family therapy as it
pertains to the therapeutic approach of Solution Focused Therapy. The given information
underlines the pertinent resources related to individual and family therapy and the application
of SFT techniques. This paper examines the presenting problem while directing the family from
the problem to the solution. Background information of the family Latoya and Cortez are both
in their early 30s and have been in a long committed relationship for the past eight years. The
couple got engaged last December and the two share a 5 year old son named CJ. Cortez was
born and raised in Huntsville, AL with both parents; he is the only child. Throughout Cortez s
life, he always needed the acceptance and approval of his peers for a majority of his life
decisions. Latoya is from a single parent household in Cleveland, Ohio. Latoya s father left her
mother and younger brother when she was 6 years old. Latoya shortly became emotionally
unattached to her family, accepting that she will never see her father again. Both Latoya and
Cortez work demanding jobs and often feel stressed and exhausted at the end of each day. Cortez
s job often consists of more hours, where he usually works at least 6 days a week. At times Latoya
feels lonely and the need for some attention and affection. When the two are together they often
argue about Latoya s partying habits, Cortez s working hours and

Rock N Roll In The 1950s
Rock n Roll in the 1950s: The change in America
Music as a whole blends together. One style leads to another, the music becomes more progressive.
It evolves to fit the new generation, leaving the old generation behind. From the spritual songs of
the late 1800s to the gospel of the early 1900s. Then it changed into rhythm and blues, and when the
1950s rolled around it became Rock n Roll. With the invention of new iconic instruments like the
Fender Precision Bass and then the Fender Stratocaster, the sound of the music changed. The sound
that was soft and low was now crunchy and loud. While it did not sit well with the adults, it was a
hit among the new generation. Even the African American roots of the music didn t deter the youth

To which they did not approve. They felt it had a rebellious nature. And lead to teens not being
more defiant, and less conforming. But most of all they hated who played the music. Most of the
musicians and music writers were African American. Even though they had earned the respect of
many people while fighting in WWII, their culture was still shunned by most of the public. But
Rock was all about being insobordinate. The fact that the parents hated it made it even more
popular among the teens. The parents might have had their own little pet names about it calling it
as blues legend B.B. King said in an interview with The Guardian, the Black Chittlin circuit. But to
the youth it was just music. The acceptance of this generation was going to bring a new opportunity
for Black America in the fight for civil rights.
Even with the definite roots in Black culture, most of the main performers however were white.
Take Elvis Presley for example, the songs he sang were the normal blues rock style, but he was
white. He was still part of the culture, he was thought as black. It was a common saying among
the musicians at the time was that If you were white and played blues you were black once. These
Black roots and White musicians led to this music being called a black and white hybrid. This fact
was what turned away most adults from this

The Role Of Fame And Fame s Influence On American Culture
The role of fame and celebrities heavily influence American culture. Some people may be eager for
a celebrity status or be drawn to one who has achieved it for reasons not fully understood. When the
word fame is thought of, often what comes to mind is the money and the attention that comes with
it. However, fame can also bring pain through addiction and the publics lack of acknowledgement
that celebritiesare peoplewho share the same struggles and stress. America s obsession with celebrity
culture effects the attitudes, behaviors, and the overall views of an average person, and also
those of the celebrity themselves. Because celebrities live in a different world compared to ours,
it can easily make our lives seen unpleasantly dull in comparison. Therefore, it s easy to become
obsessed with a life that is not our own. Americas obsession with celebrities have created ways to
make it possible for anyone to become famous through reality tv shows, but there are rules as to
what must be done to get there. Competition shows like Survivor, American Idol, Americas Next
Top Model, and Hells Circus pit contestants in no holds barred battles for supremacy and
financial reward. However, talent doesn t always play the biggest role in winning on these shows;
contestants are rewarded for being ruthless, exploitative, and vain. Nearly all of them highlight bad
behavior, giving extra camera time to cast members who blow up, break down, or scheme to grab
every advantage. As Omarosa

E Commerce And The Distribution And Retail Levels Since...
It is very much true and not a faction that the increased utilization of eMarketing/ mMarketing is
accelerating the elimination of resellers at both the distribution and retail levels since internet has a
great power and created a revaluation which to drastically altered and change the equilibrium of
influence between consumers, retailers, distributors, manufacturers and service providers; where
some win or gain and some lose (Hollensen, 2013).
The e commerce in many industries added more pressure to the physical distributors and dealers
of goods and services since it became more user friendly and convenient to order these goods and
services online from various resources while comparing the prices at the same time.
On the same issue the disintermediation process, led to some channel conflict or rate parity issues
(Hollensen, 2013). In the hospitality industry with the elimination of some traditional booking
channels such as travel agencies as well as Consortia, and Mega wholesaler as the traditional
physical distributor or Third Party Intermediaries (TPI) to the room booking, new types of
intermediaries emerged which is called online Travel agencies OTA or Opaque Channels.
I have bowered Hollensen Figure 16.8 Disintermediation and reintermediation to show the changes
to the industry in the past decades (Hollensen, 2013, p. 588).

The Disruption Of A Company
The Disruption Dilemma
I was assigned the book The Disruption Dilemma for this assignment. Gans defined disruption as
what a firm faces when the choices that once drove a firm s success now become those that destroy
it future. Failing firms tend to pursue the choices and strategies that made them successful. We will
go through examples of how a few companies handled themselves in the midst of disruption, the
types of disruptions, the reasons for disruptions, some theories of disruption, managing disruption,
insuring against it, and finally the future of disruption. Let us start by comparing an old and new
disruption dilemma.
The Encyclopedia Britanna example is an example of disruption and how successful companies
continue to do ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The key reason a firm fails from disruption is new technology, the ability to imitate, and the failure
to take advantage of an opportunity like Blockbuster in 2000.
There are a couple of sources of disruption, demand side, supply side mechanisms and disruptive
innovation. The demand side where existing firms are blindsided from a new innovation and lose
customers from changing customer wants. The supply side where organizations cannot make
organizational changes necessary to compete with new entrants. Disruptive innovation follows an S
Curve where an organization may initially perform worse and then rapidly improves.
Companies need to predict the disruption effect of new technologies, but sometimes they are not
appreciated at the time of invention and are ignored. Massively Open Online Courses or MOCC is
currently changing the education field by offering free education that threatens expensive
universities. A dilemma with new technologies is that they cannot be predicted. If disruptive events
could be predicted, they would not really be disruptive, because a business then could plan for it.
To lower uncertainties of dilemmas companies need to consider whether they should invest in a
new technology, but their existing technology might be working fine for the moment. There is a
plethora of ways a firm could be disrupted, but companies do not have enough resources or
attention. Even so, sometimes firms see

John Brown Hero
Is John Brown a hero or a murderer? While growing up in an ideal Christian family his parents,
Owen and Ruth Mills Brown, raised their children of eight to obey the teachings of the Bible. The
Browns would teach the importance of treating colored men with respect and to treat them just like
regular people. As John Brownfather was a known abolitionist during his time, he would follow
into his father s footsteps and become the man that the world knows today. Many believe that
John Brown being how he was raised was brainwashed into becoming a strict believer of equality
for all men or that religion was a cover up for being a mass murderer. Historians like Robert E.
McGlone would even question was John Brown truly acting on his own will or was... Show more

The government during this time did not consider John Brown a hero at all. He was a martyr,
straight cold blooded killer and murderer to the government at that time just because Brown
fought for slaves. Historians would characterize his actions as an act of terrorism. However
slaves, former slaves and abolitionist consider John Brown as a hero to them. John Brown should
be considered a hero in all history textbooks. Brown gave each and every ounce of his body to
make sure slavery was abolished. Even though John Brown did not achieve that goal, he was
able to pave the way for the abolishment of slavery and equality for all citizens living in the
United States of America. Frances Ellen Watkins Harper adored the actions of John Brown. She
heavily believed in him and would support him in any way. Harper would even send money to
his family after we was captured and in jail for his actions. Frances Ellen Watkins Harper praises
John Brown for his bravery at Harper s Ferry and does not believe that a martyr would do
something so heroic.(footnote Harper) A transcendentalist, Henry David Thoreau, was also a fan
of John Brown. His piece of A Plea for Captain John Brown questions why John Brown is
committed of treason. John Brown worked for slaves so that they can have a free life. However the

Don T Worry Be Happy By Bobby Mcferrin
Happy as You Want to Be
Almost everyone have heard the hit single Don t Worry, Be Happy by Bobby McFerrin. The song
has a very catchy way of conveying its message of being happy to everyone. Bobby Mcferiin s
simple message surely made a lot of people by telling them not to worry.
Living a happy, resilient and optimistic life is wonderful, and is also good for your health. Being
happy actually protects you from the stresses of life. Stress is linked to top causes of death such as
heart disease, cancer and stroke.
One of the better things ever said is The only thing in life that will always remain the same is

not seem to be a sensible thing to do.
A religious connection is also recommended. Being part of a religious group with its singing,
sacraments, chanting, prayers and meditations foster inner peace.
Manage your time. Time is invaluable and too important to waste. Time managementcan be viewed
as a list of rules that involves scheduling, setting goals, planning, creating lists of things to do and
prioritizing. These are the core basics of time management that should be understood to develop an
efficient personal time management skill. These basic skills can be fine tuned further to include
the finer points of each skill that can give you that extra reserve to make the results you desire.
Laugh and laugh heartily everyday. Heard a good joke? Tell your friends or family about it. As
they also say Laughter is the best medicine . Express your feelings, affections, friendship and

Essay On Standard Oil
Standard Oil began as an Ohio partnership incorporated in 1870 by John D. Rockefeller. Using
innovative business tactics, it absorbed or destroyed most of its competition in Cleveland in less
than two months.
Especially in early years, John D. Rockefeller was the single most important figure in shaping the
new oil industry. He distributed power and the tasks of policy formation to a system of committees,
but always remained the largest shareholder.
In response to state laws trying to limit the scale of companies, Rockefeller and his associates
developed innovative ways of organizing their rapidly growing company. On January 2, 1882, they
combined their disparate companies, spread across dozens of states, under a single group of
trustees. By ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The state of Ohio successfully sued Standard, compelling the dissolution of the trust in 1892. But
Standard simply separated Standard Oil of Ohio and kept control of it. Eventually, the state of New
Jersey changed its incorporation laws to allow a company to hold shares in other companies in
any state. So, in 1899, the Standard Oil Trust, based at 26 Broadway in New York, was legally
reborn as a holding company, the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey, which held stock in 41 other
companies, which controlled other companies, which in turn controlled yet other companies.
In 1904, Standard controlled 91 percent of production and 85 percent of final sales. Most of its
output was kerosene, of which 55 percent was exported around the world. After 1900 it did not try
to force competitors out of business by underpricing them. The federal Commissioner of
Corporations studied Standard s operations from the period of 1904 to 1906 and concluded that
beyond question... the dominant position of the Standard Oil Co. in the refining industry was due
to unfair practices .
In 1909, the US Department of Justice sued Standard under federal anti trust law, the Sherman
Antitrust Act of 1890, for sustaining a monopoly and restraining interstate commerce by:
Rebates, preferences, and other discriminatory practices in favor of the combination by railroad
companies; restraint and monopolization by control of pipe lines, and unfair practices against

Social Norms In Latin American Culture
Are our cultural and societal norms a result of our evolution or interaction between other cultures?
Abstract:
Word Count:248
The objectification and sexualization of female breasts is implemented in many cultures, including
in the American culture. It has been a common occurrence to see women cover their breasts in
public as a social norm, unless they engaged in a sexual behavior they should not be seen. Even
something as natural as breastfeeding is seen as an act of public indecency. However, this is not
the case for other cultures around the world. Some of the most modest dressing cultures see
breastfeeding as completely natural, while still seeing other parts of the female body as sexual. In
this case, why do some cultures sexualize female breasts and breastfeeding, and others do not? The
purpose of this investigation is to find if human cultural and societal norms are affected by our
evolution, or if they are influenced by our interactions with other cultures around us. For the
purpose of this investigation, a chosen culture from varying continents will be explored on their
perspective of the female breast and how each came to their current perspective. The national
bubbles will be the bases for the investigation, as exploring each individual ... Show more content

U.s. Foreign Tax Credit
The income earned by the U.S. individuals and corporations in the foreign countries or foreign
source are taxed by the U.S. government, even though other countries also tax any income earned
within their borders. To offset this double taxation of income by two different countries, the U.S.
grants both individuals and corporations a foreign taxcredit (FTC) that can be used to offset
income taxes assessed by a foreign country on the income earned there (Foreign Tax Credit, FTC,
n.d.). The FTC is allowable for foreign income taxes and other similar taxes, such as excess profit
and war profit taxes. However, only income taxes qualify for the credit. The Value Added Taxes
(VAT) and property, sales and severance taxes do not qualify, although they may be deductible.
Eligible FTC Income
The foreign tax credit can only reduce U.S. taxes on foreign source income; it cannot reduce U.S.
taxes on U.S. source income. It is generally better to take a credit for qualified foreign taxes than
to deduct them as an itemized deduction because credit reduces the tax liability dollar for dollar.
(Foreign Tax Credit Choosing To Take Credit or Deduction, n.d. ).
Claiming a deduction may be preferable to claiming the foreign tax credit if the foreign tax rate
and the proportion of foreign income to United States income is high. The tax should be computed
both ways to determine the larger benefit. Unless the de minimis exception applies, the FTC is
calculated on Form 1116. Corporations must file

Fees For High School Sports
Sports in conjunction with academics are capable of creating a balance that makes for a well
rounded citizen and healthy, happy employee. Issues in the mix often come from the balance itself.
Many students find themselves overcommitted to sport while others find they are not able to
compete. I will examine issues in interscholastic and collegiate sport.
Sports cannot always be completely free due to issues outside the realm of sport, but it should be
as inexpensive as possible to participate. Fees for high school sports should follow certain
guidelines. First off, there should always be a minimum cost sport option for high school
students. For example, any student should be allowed to participate in track and cross country
since these sports require little to no equipment and have little limits on team size. Second, high
schools should not make a net profit or loss on sports. High school sports should act as their own
entities with their own funding from the school board, and they should never take from
academics and vice versa. Third, different costs for sports should be controlled vehemently
before charging fees to play. There should be no more than 1 paid coach per team, and if there is
more than 1 paid coach, there should be no fees to play the sport since only one experienced coach
should be needed to share knowledge with the entire team and volunteer coaches. Other controllable
costs include equipment. Sports equipment and jerseys should be used for as long as

Many aspects of life could be significantly improved because of the accumulated life experience

is reasonable to believe that the average life expectancy over 100 years of age is not a miracle to
achieve. However, although scientists have made a big contribution to the life issue, I believe
the developed technologies still lack reliability and validity in many aspects, which requires
deeper research and investigation. In this essay, I will discuss The Life Expectancy Calculator

For interrater reliability, the test has not been assessed by professionals in the field. Regarding
validity, the test has certain face validity because the questionnaires seem to be reasonable. But,
predictive validity is a concern as Cavanaugh and Blanchard Field (2013) put, no one has figured
out how to predict longevity. The concurrent validity is also not strong for this test because the
test must be validated through other mechanisms or situations such as the measurement of life
expectancy by considering mortality and morbidity (Wood et al., 2006). In short, there are many
other factors such as ethnic, gender, and international differences, which didn t consider in the
test and obviously affect our life expectancy. For instance, the race that a person belongs to
affects his/her life span because some races may be more susceptible to certain diseases than
others. Cultures, beliefs and values of a group of people, definitely would shape the person s life
style too. For example, a certain culture may not appreciate the surgical treatment to remove a

Hate Speech Argumentative Essay
Hate speech is speech that is intended to degrade, intimidate, or inflect violence or prejudicial
action against someone based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, or
based on a disability. Hate speech now includes messages of gender, sexual orientation, religious
views, and physical and mental inferiority as well.
Hate speech can be harmful when it is applied and plays a critical role in acts of violence and
discrimination against a targeted population. Another way hate speech can be harm fun is when the
harmfulness of hate speech is understood turns not so much on the ability to act violently, but the
view that such words are basically harmful to those who are targeted. This shows the pattern of
abuse that is caused when abusive speech is directed to a particular target. Hate speech becomes a
hate crime in the United States when the speech contains serious and imminent threat of violence.
The violent would need to be against a person or groups of people to commit specific criminal acts
against those persons.

Propaganda And Persuasion During The Russian Civil War

describe the head as the fighter in Saint George advocating for communism. It was regarded as the
main weapon to combat capitalism. The title of the news associated with the leader was the theme
of counter revolution printed on the picture. The Russian diverse interests in capitalism, socialism

Hydrogen Isotopes And Radioactive Isotopes
Distinguish between stable and radioactive isotopes and describe the conditions under which a
nucleus is unstable.
An isotope refers to elements that have different mass numbers with the same number of protons
and similar chemical and physical properties but a greater number of neutrons for example carbon
has 3 isotopes including carbon ((_6^12)C), carbon 13 ((_6^13)C) and carbon 14 ((_6^14)C).
The difference between stable and radioactive isotopes lies in their ability to emit radiation. That is
stable isotopes are unable to emit radiation whereas radioactive isotopes are capable of emitting
radiation such as Alpha particles О± (helium nucleus), Beta ОІ particles (fast moving electron) and

Essay On Dementia Diagnosis
Dementia was the leading cause of burden in older Australians in 2011 and the second leading
cause of death in Australia in 2013, making it a national health priority (1, 2). Timely diagnosis of
dementia is essential, as pertinent issues such as options for pharmacological management,
prognosis and Advanced Care Planning (ACP) can be addressed (3, 4). Despite this, multiple
barriers hinder timely dementia diagnosis, ranging from lack of knowledge in recognising dementia
symptoms and time constraints among medical professionals, to fear of stigma, thus resulting in
delayed diagnosis (5, 6). International guidelines such as the National Institute for Health and Care
Excellence (NICE) pathways in the United Kingdom (UK) advocate referrals to... Show more

Comparatively, this study shows a larger proportion of patients with dementia being diagnosed in
hospitals. It is important to acknowledge that sampling a population in a subacute hospital in this
study may potentially over represent this. However, it is somewhat concerning to have large
proportions of patients who are first diagnosed with dementia in a hospital setting, as this tends to
occur in the condition of acute medical illness, and may reflect on missed opportunities for earlier
dementia diagnosis when the patient is well, which may have enabled earlier

Using Geert Hofstede s Six National Cultural Dimensions...
I have been selected as the project leader for Gummere International and directed to assemble a
multicultural team together to develop a custom ERP system to be used by all of our
subsidiaries. I have been given a one month, unrealistic, deadline to present our solution to the
board of directors. The division of the firm responsible for the design and development of the
system is based in India; and due to a language barrier, the project has gotten off to a rocky start.
Through Web 2.0 technology, I was able to mitigate the barriers and complete the task.
II. IT International Division Partner: India
Working with India, as an international division partner, in designing and developing the
technology needed for our firm to succeed, it is imperative to understand the dynamics of their
culture and how they compare/contrast to those of Westerners to foster a successful business
venture. This can be accomplished by using Geert Hofstede s six national cultural dimensions
model and comparing the power distance, individualism, masculinity, uncertainty, pragmatism, and
indulgence to those of Western cultures. The first dimension in the model, power distance, is very
high in India; meaning, the members of society have a very strong appreciation for hierarchy and a
top down structure in society and organizations. They tend to be reliant on their boss for direction
and are extremely obedient to their superiors. Communication is conducted through very formal

The Deer Hunter Monologue
DIALOGUE
Although the film relies heavily on location, cinematography and music to tell the
story, it is the dialogue that gives it its humanity. When Mike returns home and sees Linda
for the first time she hugs Mike, tells him she is happy he is back yet she pauses and says
I don t know how I feel . This perfectly describes everyones state of mind at this point in the
story. Mike is asked how it feels to be shot. He responds It don t hurt if that s what you mean .
It was a strange question and an odd response. Of course it hurts if you are shot, but I think he
was trying to convince both his friends and himself that he wasn t mentally affected by the war.

The Deer Hunter deals with the ramifications
of war but is it a war movie. The answer is yes and no. Relatively little time is devoted
to war footage, seemingly the director believes that we are intuitively aware of what
a war looks like and focuses instead on the human toll of war. It is also difficult, as Mr. Biskind
suggests, to discern what political statement
the filmmaker is trying to make, if any at all. If I had to categorize this film I would call
it a psychological drama. The same film could have been made using any number of
backdrops. The war had ended only three years prior to the making of The Deer
Hunter so it seems logical that Cimino chose the Viet Nam War as his subject. As
important as the movie seemed in 1978, I think the passage of time has dampened
the enthusiasm over its importance. The director s next film, Heavens Gate was
a box office flop. From that moment, critics began to re examine their praise of
The Deer Hunter . Fame can certainly be fleeting.
PERSONAL REACTION

High School Dropout Rates
The APA is the leading scientific and professional organization representing psychology in the
United States, with a mission to advance the creation, communication, and application of
psychological knowledge to benefit society and improve people s lives. For these reasons, it is not
surprising that the American Psychological Association published an article in May of 2013,
bringing to light the impact of family and community povertyon high schooldropouts (Rumberger,
2013). According to the APA, an estimated 1.1 million individuals did not earn a high school
diploma in 2012, and unfortunately the drop out and the drop out s family are not the only ones
affected, but the decision to drop out can also affect all of society as well. With lasting
consequences, even after earning a GED, it is safe to say that something must be done to reduce
the current dropout rate of approximately 7,000 people per day.
Why might not earning a high school diploma be such a big problem? To start, compared to high
school graduates, they are less likely to find a job and earn a living wage (Rumberger, 2013). It
might be necessary for a dropout to take advantage of public assistance ... Show more content on

could result in another individual dropping out of school. The young students could also find it
necessary to search for employment in order to contribute to the home. It seems that dropping out

The Discussion of Homosexuality in Comic Books
The discussion of homosexuality in comic books has a long history, reaching back to 1954, when
German American psychiatrist Frederick Wertham published Seduction of the Innocent, a book that
warned about the negative effect of popular literature. The book was a minor bestseller and was
taken seriously at the time, creating alarm in parents with the claim that reading the crime ,
superhero and horror comics that contain descriptions of violence, sex, drug use and other adult
themes, children will be encouraged to similar behavior (Wikipedia). More than five decades later
the song remains the same; not much seems to have changed in society s mentality. Parents fear
that violent video games will make their children into raging psychopaths,... Show more content on

There are Movies and TV shows addressing the issue in one way or another, experimenting with
LGBTQ characters and watching the reaction of fans, testing the waters. Twelve states have
approved same sex marriage legislation in the US, celebrities and sportsmen are coming out to the
public, with Pope Francis statement that gays and lesbians must be accepted with respect,
compassion and sensitivity , even the Catholic Church seems to have turned around and has pressed
the reset button on the Roman Catholic Church s treatment of LGBT people (Chad Griffin), and in
spite of all this, just in the past 3 years, there have been more than forty registered fatal hate crimes
targeting gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.
The comic book industry did not ignore the issue either, and with all the other major media,
comics have made a statement; with all the superheroes that are literally coming out of the closet,
the fact that just this past year, there have been two same sex marriages on the covers of the
Astonishing X men and Archie, two big brand comic books, and that the first transgender comic

Is Affirmative Action Fair?
Affirmative action was created to increase the number of people from certain social groups in
employment, education, business, government, and other areas (LaNoue, G., 2010). This policy is
geared toward women, and minorities such as African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic
Americans, American Indians, and disabled people. Generally speaking, Affirmative Actionwas put
into place to benefit groups that are thought to have suffered from discrimination. Some believe that
affirmative action is just a means for minorities to get ahead, but the benefit is for minorities to first

Therefore, the rationale behind most affirmative action is sound. It does make sense to attempt
to normalize for differences in the college entry level because of the quality of preparation at the
elementary and secondary levels because children have no say in where they attend school.
Typically, they are forced to attend a school nearest to their home and they normally do not have
any control over the quality of education they receive. I made no mention here of race, but the
quality of the education; the unfortunate truth here is that these two are highly correlated in our
country. I derive that those who may benefit from affirmative action policies have the ability to
succeed but the preparation is lacking. No matter what the case may be, they do deserve a
chance. Some would argue that once you reach post college employment opportunities that there
is no need for affirmative action since presumably the educational differences you find in
secondary schools and colleges would have balanced out by the end of your college career. So
often we still see employers choosing to hire someone that is under qualified as opposed to
someone who is over qualified. Have you ever heard the statement, We decided to go with someone
with a little less experience ? Oftentimes, potential employers will tell candidates for positions this

The Superiority Theory Of Humor
There are many ways that people use humor. It has been used both in positive and negative ways.
The negative, or more aggressive, view of humor is evident in ancient writings and in the merciless
teasing that children inflict on one another. , However, in modern times, humor is now commonly
seen as a positive aspect and that the laughter that arises is the expression [an] incongruity. Because
of these two conflicting view of humor, there have been multiple theories proposed to explain it.
There are two major theories in explaining humor. The first is the superiority theory. In line with the
past views on humor, the superiority theory takes on a much more negative, serious, and intense
take on how humor functions and why we laugh. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This theory focuses more specifically on the cognition and [gives] less attention to the social and
emotional aspects of humor. The incongruity resolution theory can be applied to many forms of
humor. One example is visual incongruities. We laugh when we see a young child try to act like an
adult around an even younger child. The incongruity is we expect the young child to still act
immaturely around the small child but does not. The resolution is that the young child is playing
make believe or somehow trying to impress the younger child.
The second type of incongruity is through wordplay. Prime examples are puns. For example,
George Carlin said, Atheism is a non prophet institution. The incongruity is found in the meaning of
non prophet and nonprofit. Atheism is known as the lack of belief or denial of a higher being/God
/religion. So, non prophet relates to the meaning of atheism. However, non prophet also sounds a lot
like nonprofit. In the pun, atheism is called an institution. Based off how prophet and profit sound
the same, atheism could also be considered a nonprofit institution. It is, in the pun, both an
institution that does not believe in God and an institution whose primary goal is not to make
money. Unlike the superiority theory, the incongruity resolution theory makes it explicit that these
examples of humor are all in a safe environment or

Raising A Child Discipline
Not a single parent will ever say raising a child is easy. In fact, raising a child is, indeed, difficult.
It costs money, and a great deal of emotional, psychological and physical energy; just to name a
few. Most importantly, parenting never seems to happen as many parents have imagined or wished.
However, the intention of this paper is not to greaten the sufferings of the parents by provoking
their frustrations. It is rather to provide an insight or an option to make parenting less painful and
more enjoyable as it should have been in the first place. Out of many adjustments a parentcan make
for the betterment of his/her child and their relationship, one major component is discipline. There
are already many cases of failures of either over discipling or under discipling a child. However,
with a well balanced and prepared methods of disciplining, one s child can maximize to his/her
potential.
One of the most significant element of discipline is the consistency of rules. Parents should clearly
elaborate on what the rules are and both the positive and negative consequences following certain
actions. Statistics show that children whose parents are strict with rules are less likely to be
noncompliant and to become a juvenile delinquent compared to children raised by parents with a
lack of consistent rules. Studies further indicate that children s self esteem and send of self efficacy
directly correlate with their family s control in their lives. Such positive influence on the

The narrative is quite traditional it starts with several problems that are eventually solved by the

Also, even before we performed, we took a lovely walk through fields of corn planted right next

Nutlock replaces the nut or skewer where your bike wheel attaches to the frame (the hub or
center point that the wheel revolves on). Normally, it is very easy for bike thieves to walk up
with a wrench and remove the nut or skewer, freeing the wheel from the bike frame in seconds.
The back wheel is a little more tricky and time consuming because of the chain and possibly
gears, but still manageable for any experienced bike thief. The nutlock features a conical shape
with open ended cutouts (where you insert your unique key) so that wrenches and other tools

Zelda Research Paper
There were two other BS Zelda games: Ancient Stone Tablets and Triforce of the Gods. Ancient
Stone Tablets was a sequel to A Link to the Past in which the player s BS avatar was drawn into
Hyrule while Triforce of the Gods was merely a port of A Link to the Past without even a name
change between the Japanese SNES and BS releases.
Stateside, American games didn t get the Satellaview and very few people owned a CD i to play
those three games, and whether you d want to is another story altogether, so effectively there
was a five year wait between Zelda releases in the States. The results would prove to be worth the

While you can control the direction of the wind using the Wind Waker, you can t control how fast

involves sailing to specific locations to search for pieces of the Triforce. Whatever its flaws

Should The Vending Machines Be Purchased For An External...
The vending machines are going to be purchased for an external company meeting the
requirements for products that are going to be offered depending on the geographic areas. The
machines are going to be divided in two sections: both with regulated temperature, but one colder
than the other to ensure some products durability. There is going to be also a special door with
an electronic tool providing eggs, which will secure the fragility of the product. The company
will also consider to employing a vending maintenance person that will be a student worker who
will have the responsibility of periodical visits to the machines; maybe once or twice per week to
check the inventory and to determine the good functioning of the different mechanisms and
electronic components. However, we also are going to have technology that is going to allow us to
control inventory and sales. 8.3.Permits As a vending machine company, the business must be
certified. Since Smart Vending is going to be selling food, there are going to be permits to
complete, like in any business, vending routes are subject to state and local laws to obtain proper
permits and licenses required by their local ordinances. It is also important to understand these
regulations because those can change depending on the product that is being offered and also the
state that we are competing in. 8.3.1.Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) The vending machines

Digital Communication And Electronic Data
Introduction Backing up digital communication and electronic data especially e mails is a very
important IT practice to insure against loss of data. The main reason for backup of e mails is
restore emails whenever required. There have been a lot of cases in the past where emails have
been deleted accidently or intentionally which has created problems in day to day working.
Deletion of emails have hindered court cases and delayed judgement in the past. Cases like
Zubulake v. UBS Warburg have been decided by adverse inference which is nothing but failure
of defendant to provide proof to defend themselves. The Policy presents a mandate for
Universities and colleges in a state to contract a licensed third party who is not bias to archive
all the emails. Unbiased Email archiving is important as more and more lawsuit are being filed
and the defendants are unable to submit any emails to prove themselves innocent. Some of the
cases are Zubulake v. UBS Warburg. [1], and FiTeq Inc. v. Venture Corp. [2] Siani v. State
University of New York at Farmingdale, 2010 WL 3170664 (E.D.N.Y. Aug. 10, 2010)[3] is a case
where the plaintiff Dominic Saini filed a case of violation of Age discrimination in Employment
Act and claimed an adverse inference in march 2010 that the defended State University of New
York at Farmingdale were unable to implement and effectively carryout litigation hold which
resulted in spoliation of electronic records. The judge acknowledged that the defendants were

My Escape From Home
It is my first day at Westvalley high, and boy was my heart racing. I silently go over my mother s
words in my head. New school, new start, new friends. As much as I know this is not true, I try
and keep my hopes high. Trying my best to deny the constant feeling of being alone. But the truth
is I am not alone... I am standing in a crowded hallway listening to the sudden groans of students as
they realise they are no longer in the paradise they call home. Unfortunately for me the feelingof
loneliness just won t let go, somehow this school seems even lonelier than the dump I call home.
My mother is never home and maybe that is the reason her words feel so dear to my heart. Almost
every day she slaves away at work barely scraping up enough money to afford the rent only to be
greeted by my ill tempered father. My father is almost never happy and when he gets into one of
his moods it is hard to escape his fury. I guess you could think of school as an escape from home
yet now I feel more like a stranger than ever before.
Bring! Bring! Oh no! Here comes the first day of torture... I slowly stumble into the classroom
making sure my desk is the closest to the back. I couldn t bear the thought of sitting in the front
again, not after my last class. I sit silently as the roll is called only opening my mouth to murmur
the word present before returning back to my quiet self. I suppose when it all comes down to it
most kids seem alright at the least, but there is one girl that seems to

The Long Before Detroit Became A Powerhouse
In 1950 Detroit s population reached an all time high. The city was booming with the help of the
Automotive industry. Underneath the excitement and prosperity, greater powers were taking effect,
permanently changing this region. These outside influences are what fostered Detroit s rise to
power as well as its great demise. Long before Detroitbecame a powerhouse, events were taking
effect that would have a clear ripple effect in later years. As early as 1916 African Americans
were heading north. The Great Migration was spurred by the heavy racism, including Jim Crow

Movement to Detroit, as a result of these events, is what allowed Detroit to become the auto motive
powerhouse of the country.
The powerful influx of African Americans into the Detroit area led to heightened racial tensions
that was seen nationwide at the time. The white supremacy group, the Ku Klux Klan, dug itself into
the Detroit region as early as the 1920s, making life more difficult through means of housing.
White communities militantly guarded the dividing lines imposed by segregation throughout
Detroit s history. As a result, the city s 200,000 black residents were cramped into 60 square
blocks on the East Side and forced to live under deplorable sanitary conditions. Ironically, the
ghetto was called Paradise Valley (American Experience). These events eventually culminated
into a series of race riots that required military intervention on various occasions and even with
the aid, fatalities were inevitable. The worst of the early riots was in 1943 after which troops
were stationed in the region for 6 months to help maintain the peace. All of this was spurred by
the Civil War leading into a new age for african americans to be free and was catalyzed by World
War I and II. All of this leads to postwar America in the 1950s. The demand of factory workers
was no longer present and technology development was a game changer. New automation began

Tea Making Japan Summary
In the book Making Tea, Making Japan: Cultural Nationalism in Practice, Kristin Surak explores
the role and the importance of Japanese tea ceremony in Japanese culture, history, and politics.
Her analysis reveals that tea ceremony, which has been known as one of the most popular
traditional Japanese cultures in Japan and overseas, has not only been used to shape Japanese
identity and ideology, but also to obtain powers in politics. Moreover, the role of teaceremony in
politics and shaping Japanese identity has been changing throughout time, depending on the social
and the political needs and trends of the county. The book does a good job of explaining the
significance of tea ceremony in Japanese society in each era since the beginning of tea ceremony
and its meaning for Japanese people.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since then, men had used the tea ceremony to obtain skills that were necessary in politics as well
as skills to cultivate the self (Kindle Location 1290). For women, tea ceremony had had different
social meanings. Since women did not have any public roles until the post war period, tea
ceremony for women was something that could elevate their status as good wives and wise
mothers because people believed that tea ceremony could teach good morals that were necessary to
become good house wives (Kindle Location1506). Surak argues that not only tea ceremony have
had different social meanings for men and women, it also have created class distinctions among
people since the beginning of tea ceremony (Kindle Location, 1739). She explains that these
differences of social meanings associated with tea ceremony still exist in contemporary

Racial Disparities
Racial disparities in HIV incidence were examined by both Des Jarlais et al. and Scheer et al.
The main objective for Des Jarlais et al. was to identify disparities in HIV incidence during a time
period where the HIV epidemic has come to an end. On the other hand, Scheer et al. aimed to
estimate the HIVincidence in the state of California in order to prioritize certain populations for
HIV prevention and treatment. Participants in Des Jarlais et al. were individuals who were
admitted into a drug detoxification program in New York City while Scheer et al. used people
living in California aged 13 years or older. To collect data, Des Jarlais et al. utilized a computer
assisted questionnaire to gather demographics and risk behavior information. Only individuals who
had been injecting drugs within the past 6 months were included in the study.... Show more content

Scheer et al. was able to get data on HIV incidence from the Los Angeles Country, San Franscisco
Department, and California Department of Public Health. Each jurisdiction estimated HIV
incidence using Serologic Testing Algorithm for Recent Seroconversion (STARHS) which is a
test that determine whether a person was recently infected with HIV. Des Jarlais et al. found the
estimated HIV incidence rate for African Americans and Latinos to be twice that of whites (4 per
10,000 versus 2 per 10,000 a year). This could be attributed to the more frequent drug injections
used by African Americans which was also reported in the results. Results from Scheer et al. found
similar results with African Americans experiencing an incidence rate twice that of whites.
However, Latino s had an HIV incidence similar to whites. While both articles reported important
information, each had limitations. The participants of Des Jarlais et al. were from the Mount Sinai

Anzac Day
Having a well defined set of values, principles and rules in the company s Code of Conduct helps
employees in knowing the difference between right and wrong, and holds them fully
accountable on any wrongdoing. Therefore, every company must have a clear Code of Conduct
and must communicate it to all the employees. Based on Scott McIntyre s case and other media
companies COC, SBS has to adopt an updated COC composed of precise rules and standards.
Scott McIntyre s post regarding inappropriate and disrespectful comments about Anzac Day is
not an act that is mentioned clearly as a restriction in SBS s key principles. Thus, this ambiguity
created the misunderstanding of rules and values between SBS and the reporter. Therefore, it is
crucial to elaborate more on the principles. On the other hand, the other media companies adopt
a stronger COC. The first example is Los Angeles Times: one of their basic principles is to
always merge the professional life with the personal one especially when using social media
because the reporter should not, in any way, embarrass the company or let the viewers question
its authenticity and impartiality. Even when using strict privacy settings, the reporter should
always keep in mind that everything posted or shared on social media is considered public. The
second example is the independence outside work in NPR s COC: it is mentioned that the
reporters comments and reactions should be guided by their news reporting, not by their personal
point of views. This rule is not only during the reporter s professional appearances, but also on his
or her social media accounts. The third example is the strong language in BBC News COC: strong...

Opal Card Essay
The Opal card is a contactless smartcard that is the new centrepiece of the new electronic
ticketing system implemented by Cubic Transportation Systems (CTS). It allows the user to top
up a balance either through manual loading (via Opal top up machines), or linked to a credit
card. This balance is used against Opal card readers to scan where the trip begins and ends,
automatically calculating the fare and deducting it from the balance on the card. In the event that
the trip has been started, but not finished (scanned only once within a day), a default fare will be
charged to the card. The Opal card needs to abide by the Identification cards Contactless integrated

protocol) and transmission protocols (half duplex block transmission protocol). This new
ticketing system would be gradually introduced throughout the greater Sydney region, across all
190 stations of the Sydney train network by 28th March 2014 and then further extended to
include 52 more stations on the South Coast Line to Wollongong, Port Kembla and Bomaderry,
as well as the Southern Highlands Line to Goulburn by April 4. (McKenny, 2014). It will need to

Because of her concern for white masters and resulting choices to abandon her famous slave
holding family to move to the North, to write an address to southern women, and to speak in front
of audiences of both men and women, Angelina Grimke adopted the abolitionist cause and often
challenged her role in society. Originally, Grimke was promoting abolition out of concern for
whites as she believed that slaverywas anti Christian; she was seen trying to discourage family
from having slaves out of concern for her salvation. However, that family would have been a
difficult one to persuade as they were the one of the most prominent slaveholding families in South
Carolina; there were rumors that each family member had their own slave who would help

A Career As A Law Enforcement Officer

immense. In other words, Christopher Meloni speaks about the immense amount of respect that he
has towards the individuals who have made a commitment to working in the field of law
enforcement due to their endless work load that they must do on a regular basis. At a fairly young
age, I recall having the same amount of respect for those individuals as well. It troubled my family

within the field of law enforcement provides an atmosphere of in depth thinkers that gather and

solve a case. It seems as though this field is constantly filled with a new adventure, no two days

is an aspect that I believe I would cherish, feeling the rush of adrenaline as you approach a
criminal, or running after one who decides to make a run for it would be such an ecstatic

that today s law enforcement workers are not viewed as highly as they once were, due to an
insignificant number of workers who take advantage of their power. Power and greed never go

Lucid Dreams And Information-Processing Theory
Dreaming is defined by the Barron AP Psychology Book as the series of storylike images we
experience as we sleep (McEntarffer, 2016, p. 113). Dreams come in all shapes and sizes; some
seem random and others may seem to hold more meaning. There are a wide array of dream theories
including Freudian theory, information processing theory, and activation synthesis theory as
described in the aforementioned book. Freud s perspective emphasizes the unconscious mindand
how dreams can reveal repressed memories. Similar to Freud s theory, the information processing
theory attributes dreamcontent to daily stress as the brain uses dreams to process a day s events.
The activation synthesis theory takes on a more biological perspective, focusing on how... Show

To figure out the specific applications of lucid dreaming research, Melanie Schädlich from the
University of Heidelberg in Germany and Daniel Erlacher from the University of Bern in
Switzerland collaborated on an online survey back in 2012, in which 300 frequent lucid
dreamers were asked about possible benefits of lucid dreaming as it pertains to their daily lives.
The results are as follow: The most frequent application (81.4%) was having fun, followed by
changing a bad dream or nightmare into a pleasant one (63.8%), solving problems (29.9%),
getting creative ideas or insights (27.6%) and practicing skills (21.3%) (p. 134). For this reason,
lucid dreaming could prove to be a useful tool in combating nightmares or fears, and it may even
prove a useful tool in therapy further down the road if scientists continue to research it and figure
out ways to elicit these

Gender Roles In J. B. Priestley s An Inspector Calls
An Inspector Calls was written by J. B. Priestley in 1945, and was set in 1912. One of the main
themes throughout the play is the theme of responsibility, and the consequences of our actions.
Another important theme in the play is of the contrast between the younger and older generations,
which again links into responsibility, as the younger generation are willing to accept responsibility
for what they have done wrong, whereas the older generation are not.
In the beginning of the play, we get the idea that Sheila may be slightly naГЇve, as she is still
young, and we see her and her mother, Mrs Birling, following the typical gender roles of women in
1912, especially those of the upper class. However, as the play progresses, we begin to see ... Show

When she find out about her father s involvement, her attitude begins to change slightly, and she
says I think it was a mean thing to do. Perhaps that spoilt everything for her which shows that she
understands that her father is partly responsible for Eva Smith s death, and she sees how he
could have had something to do with it, whereas, he doesn t see how he could be responsible,
responding to Sheila s comment with Rubbish! . This is the first example we see of the
differences between the younger and older generations, as Sheila can see how Mr Birling could
be at fault, whereas he is denying any responsibility, and insists it was all Eva Smith s own fault.
The fact that Sheila is portrayed as a naГЇve child at first, but then begins to understand how her
father could ve impacted Eva Smith s life demonstrates Priestley s idea that the younger generation
are also more open to change, and to accepting what they have done

  • 2. Brave New World and Dubliners Brave New World, written by Aldous Huxley, is a thought provoking novel set in a future of genetically engineered people, amazing technology and a misconstrued system of values. Dubliners, written by James Joyce, is a collection of short stories painting a picture of life in Dublin Ireland, near the turn of the 19th century. Though of two completely different settings and story lines, these two works can and will be compared and contrasted on the basis of the social concerns and issues raised within them. One of the first things stressed in Brave New Worldis the idea that there is no real discrimination. Though it is true that there is a class system, the classes are derived from the fact that people are genetically engineered... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Especially if love can be defined as being comfortable and intimate with someone who accepts one for who they are and all they stand for. If that were the case then in Brave New World, in a convoluted way, every single person, in belonging to everyone else, also loves everyone else. But as love can not be defined so simply, this is not true. The absence of love in Huxley #8217;s novel is most obviously deliberate, just as the inclusion of love in certain pieces in Dubliners is intentional. The reason it appears obvious is that Huxley goes to great lengths to describe his world in great detail and yet does not mention love as a part of it. The reason love is brought to bear as a social issue is that without it, imagine how bland things would be. For example, fine art would have no passion, literature would contain no romance, music would be lifeless without the soul behind it. All these things and more make love a thing of huge importance in life. Michael Furey, in #8220;The Dead #8221; would not have had The Lass of Aughrim to sing, the narrator of #8220;Araby #8221; would have had no reason to go to the bazaar, in fact, many of the stories within Dubliners may never have been written. Love also plays a large role in family. Within Dubliners, family is an important factor in various stories. One such story is #8220;Eveline #8221;. Though it is true that in this situation, the family described may not be a precisely happy one, it is a family ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Throughout Cortez s life, he always needed the acceptance and approval of his peers for a majority of his life decisions. Latoya is from a single parent household in Cleveland, Ohio. • 4. Rock N Roll In The 1950s Rock n Roll in the 1950s: The change in America Music as a whole blends together. One style leads to another, the music becomes more progressive. It evolves to fit the new generation, leaving the old generation behind. From the spritual songs of the late 1800s to the gospel of the early 1900s. Then it changed into rhythm and blues, and when the 1950s rolled around it became Rock n Roll. With the invention of new iconic instruments like the Fender Precision Bass and then the Fender Stratocaster, the sound of the music changed. The sound that was soft and low was now crunchy and loud. While it did not sit well with the adults, it was a hit among the new generation. Even the African American roots of the music didn t deter the youth listening ... But most of all they hated who played the music. Most of the musicians and music writers were African American. Even though they had earned the respect of many people while fighting in WWII, their culture was still shunned by most of the public. But Rock was all about being insobordinate. The fact that the parents hated it made it even more popular among the teens. The parents might have had their own little pet names about it calling it as blues legend B.B. King said in an interview with The Guardian, the Black Chittlin circuit. But to the youth it was just music. The acceptance of this generation was going to bring a new opportunity for Black America in the fight for civil rights. Even with the definite roots in Black culture, most of the main performers however were white. Take Elvis Presley for example, the songs he sang were the normal blues rock style, but he was white. He was still part of the culture, he was thought as black. It was a common saying among the musicians at the time was that If you were white and played blues you were black once. These Black roots and White musicians led to this music being called a black and white hybrid. This fact was what turned away most adults from this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Role Of Fame And Fame s Influence On American Culture The role of fame and celebrities heavily influence American culture. Some people may be eager for a celebrity status or be drawn to one who has achieved it for reasons not fully understood. When the word fame is thought of, often what comes to mind is the money and the attention that comes with it. However, fame can also bring pain through addiction and the publics lack of acknowledgement that celebritiesare peoplewho share the same struggles and stress. America s obsession with celebrity culture effects the attitudes, behaviors, and the overall views of an average person, and also those of the celebrity themselves. Because celebrities live in a different world compared to ours, it can easily make our lives seen unpleasantly dull in comparison. Therefore, it s easy to become obsessed with a life that is not our own. Americas obsession with celebrities have created ways to make it possible for anyone to become famous through reality tv shows, but there are rules as to what must be done to get there. Competition shows like Survivor, American Idol, Americas Next Top Model, and Hells Circus pit contestants in no holds barred battles for supremacy and financial reward. However, talent doesn t always play the biggest role in winning on these shows; contestants are rewarded for being ruthless, exploitative, and vain. Nearly all of them highlight bad behavior, giving extra camera time to cast members who blow up, break down, or scheme to grab every advantage. As Omarosa ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. E Commerce And The Distribution And Retail Levels Since... It is very much true and not a faction that the increased utilization of eMarketing/ mMarketing is accelerating the elimination of resellers at both the distribution and retail levels since internet has a great power and created a revaluation which to drastically altered and change the equilibrium of influence between consumers, retailers, distributors, manufacturers and service providers; where some win or gain and some lose (Hollensen, 2013). The e commerce in many industries added more pressure to the physical distributors and dealers of goods and services since it became more user friendly and convenient to order these goods and services online from various resources while comparing the prices at the same time. On the same issue the disintermediation process, led to some channel conflict or rate parity issues (Hollensen, 2013). In the hospitality industry with the elimination of some traditional booking channels such as travel agencies as well as Consortia, and Mega wholesaler as the traditional physical distributor or Third Party Intermediaries (TPI) to the room booking, new types of intermediaries emerged which is called online Travel agencies OTA or Opaque Channels. I have bowered Hollensen Figure 16.8 Disintermediation and reintermediation to show the changes to the industry in the past decades (Hollensen, 2013, p. 588). Gans defined disruption as what a firm faces when the choices that once drove a firm s success now become those that destroy it future. Failing firms tend to pursue the choices and strategies that made them successful. We will go through examples of how a few companies handled themselves in the midst of disruption, the types of disruptions, the reasons for disruptions, some theories of disruption, managing disruption, insuring against it, and finally the future of disruption. Let us start by comparing an old and new disruption dilemma. The Encyclopedia Britanna example is an example of disruption and how successful companies continue to do ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The key reason a firm fails from disruption is new technology, the ability to imitate, and the failure to take advantage of an opportunity like Blockbuster in 2000. There are a couple of sources of disruption, demand side, supply side mechanisms and disruptive innovation. The demand side where existing firms are blindsided from a new innovation and lose customers from changing customer wants. The supply side where organizations cannot make organizational changes necessary to compete with new entrants. Disruptive innovation follows an S Curve where an organization may initially perform worse and then rapidly improves. Companies need to predict the disruption effect of new technologies, but sometimes they are not appreciated at the time of invention and are ignored. Massively Open Online Courses or MOCC is currently changing the education field by offering free education that threatens expensive universities. A dilemma with new technologies is that they cannot be predicted. If disruptive events could be predicted, they would not really be disruptive, because a business then could plan for it. To lower uncertainties of dilemmas companies need to consider whether they should invest in a new technology, but their existing technology might be working fine for the moment. There is a plethora of ways a firm could be disrupted, but companies do not have enough resources or attention. Even so, sometimes firms see ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While growing up in an ideal Christian family his parents, Owen and Ruth Mills Brown, raised their children of eight to obey the teachings of the Bible. The Browns would teach the importance of treating colored men with respect and to treat them just like regular people. As John Brownfather was a known abolitionist during his time, he would follow into his father s footsteps and become the man that the world knows today. Using innovative business tactics, it absorbed or destroyed most of its competition in Cleveland in less than two months. Especially in early years, John D. Rockefeller was the single most important figure in shaping the new oil industry. He distributed power and the tasks of policy formation to a system of committees, but always remained the largest shareholder. The state of Ohio successfully sued Standard, compelling the dissolution of the trust in 1892. But Standard simply separated Standard Oil of Ohio and kept control of it. Eventually, the state of New Jersey changed its incorporation laws to allow a company to hold shares in other companies in any state. So, in 1899, the Standard Oil Trust, based at 26 Broadway in New York, was legally reborn as a holding company, the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey, which held stock in 41 other companies, which controlled other companies, which in turn controlled yet other companies. In 1904, Standard controlled 91 percent of production and 85 percent of final sales. Most of its output was kerosene, of which 55 percent was exported around the world. • 13. Social Norms In Latin American Culture Are our cultural and societal norms a result of our evolution or interaction between other cultures? Abstract: Word Count:248 The objectification and sexualization of female breasts is implemented in many cultures, including in the American culture. It has been a common occurrence to see women cover their breasts in public as a social norm, unless they engaged in a sexual behavior they should not be seen. Even something as natural as breastfeeding is seen as an act of public indecency. However, this is not the case for other cultures around the world. Some of the most modest dressing cultures see breastfeeding as completely natural, while still seeing other parts of the female body as sexual. In this case, why do some cultures sexualize female breasts and breastfeeding, and others do not? The purpose of this investigation is to find if human cultural and societal norms are affected by our evolution, or if they are influenced by our interactions with other cultures around us. For the purpose of this investigation, a chosen culture from varying continents will be explored on their perspective of the female breast and how each came to their current perspective. • 14. U.s. Foreign Tax Credit The income earned by the U.S. individuals and corporations in the foreign countries or foreign source are taxed by the U.S. government, even though other countries also tax any income earned within their borders. To offset this double taxation of income by two different countries, the U.S. grants both individuals and corporations a foreign taxcredit (FTC) that can be used to offset income taxes assessed by a foreign country on the income earned there (Foreign Tax Credit, FTC, n.d.). The FTC is allowable for foreign income taxes and other similar taxes, such as excess profit and war profit taxes. However, only income taxes qualify for the credit. The Value Added Taxes (VAT) and property, sales and severance taxes do not qualify, although they may be deductible. Eligible FTC Income The foreign tax credit can only reduce U.S. taxes on foreign source income; it cannot reduce U.S. taxes on U.S. source income. It is generally better to take a credit for qualified foreign taxes than to deduct them as an itemized deduction because credit reduces the tax liability dollar for dollar. (Foreign Tax Credit Choosing To Take Credit or Deduction, n.d. ). Claiming a deduction may be preferable to claiming the foreign tax credit if the foreign tax rate and the proportion of foreign income to United States income is high. Issues in the mix often come from the balance itself. Many students find themselves overcommitted to sport while others find they are not able to compete. I will examine issues in interscholastic and collegiate sport. Sports cannot always be completely free due to issues outside the realm of sport, but it should be as inexpensive as possible to participate. Fees for high school sports should follow certain guidelines. First off, there should always be a minimum cost sport option for high school students. For example, any student should be allowed to participate in track and cross country since these sports require little to no equipment and have little limits on team size. Second, high schools should not make a net profit or loss on sports. High school sports should act as their own entities with their own funding from the school board, and they should never take from academics and vice versa. Third, different costs for sports should be controlled vehemently before charging fees to play. There should be no more than 1 paid coach per team, and if there is more than 1 paid coach, there should be no fees to play the sport since only one experienced coach should be needed to share knowledge with the entire team and volunteer coaches. Other controllable costs include equipment. Sports equipment and jerseys should be used for as long as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The concurrent validity is also not strong for this test because the test must be validated through other mechanisms or situations such as the measurement of life expectancy by considering mortality and morbidity (Wood et al., 2006). In short, there are many other factors such as ethnic, gender, and international differences, which didn t consider in the test and obviously affect our life expectancy. For instance, the race that a person belongs to affects his/her life span because some races may be more susceptible to certain diseases than others. Hate Speech Argumentative Essay Hate speech is speech that is intended to degrade, intimidate, or inflect violence or prejudicial action against someone based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, or based on a disability. Hate speech now includes messages of gender, sexual orientation, religious views, and physical and mental inferiority as well. Hate speech can be harmful when it is applied and plays a critical role in acts of violence and discrimination against a targeted population. Another way hate speech can be harm fun is when the harmfulness of hate speech is understood turns not so much on the ability to act violently, but the view that such words are basically harmful to those who are targeted. • 20. Hydrogen Isotopes And Radioactive Isotopes Distinguish between stable and radioactive isotopes and describe the conditions under which a nucleus is unstable. An isotope refers to elements that have different mass numbers with the same number of protons and similar chemical and physical properties but a greater number of neutrons for example carbon has 3 isotopes including carbon ((_6^12)C), carbon 13 ((_6^13)C) and carbon 14 ((_6^14)C). The difference between stable and radioactive isotopes lies in their ability to emit radiation. That is stable isotopes are unable to emit radiation whereas radioactive isotopes are capable of emitting radiation such as Alpha particles О± (helium nucleus), Beta ОІ particles (fast moving electron) and gamma Оі particles (high energy electromagnetic rays). An Isotopes stability is dependent on it neutron to proton ratio for example elements are generally stable if in the lighter elements (those with atomic numbers less than 20) for example lithium, the neutron to proton ratio is 1:1 and in heavier elements (those with atomic numbers from 79 83) are stable if the ratio is 1.5:1. Also any element with an atomic number greater than 83 is naturally radioactive as they are composed of an unstable nucleus for example promethium ((_61^145)Pm). Nutlock Research Paper All around the world people use bicycles for transportation as a necessity as well as for adventure, so, at no surprise, all around the world bike thieves exist to capitalize on unprotected bicycles. Nutlock is the latest in the trend of bike wheel theft deterrent devices. No one wants their day to be cut short of possible adventure by going outside and finding your bike is missing a wheel, or worse, both wheels. Instead of your day having a lovely bike ride, the adventure has now become to run around in circles wanting to shake down every John and Jane on the block to try and find your bike. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nutlock replaces the nut or skewer where your bike wheel attaches to the frame (the hub or center point that the wheel revolves on). Normally, it is very easy for bike thieves to walk up with a wrench and remove the nut or skewer, freeing the wheel from the bike frame in seconds. The back wheel is a little more tricky and time consuming because of the chain and possibly gears, but still manageable for any experienced bike thief. The nutlock features a conical shape with open ended cutouts (where you insert your unique key) so that wrenches and other tools used for theft can t find a place to grip, slipping right off the nutlock before they can get enough torque to begin to unfasten the nutlock by even a micrometer. To put it in other words, to install the nutlock on your bike is like fastening your wheel with a special nut and you have a unique wrench that is the only tool that can unfasten it. Anzac Day Having a well defined set of values, principles and rules in the company s Code of Conduct helps employees in knowing the difference between right and wrong, and holds them fully accountable on any wrongdoing. Based on Scott McIntyre s case and other media companies COC, SBS has to adopt an updated COC composed of precise rules and standards. Scott McIntyre s post regarding inappropriate and disrespectful comments about Anzac Day is not an act that is mentioned clearly as a restriction in SBS s key principles. Thus, this ambiguity created the misunderstanding of rules and values between SBS and the reporter. Therefore, it is crucial to elaborate more on the principles. Even when using strict privacy settings, the reporter should always keep in mind that everything posted or shared on social media is considered public. The second example is the independence outside work in NPR s COC: it is mentioned that the reporters comments and reactions should be guided by their news reporting, not by their personal point of views.
