Analysis Of The Article Selection, Slanting, And Charged...
According to Birk and Birk in Selection, Slanting, and Charged Language , the word slanting
could be used for or against or it can be used both ways. In Mokoto Rich s article is for the
Federal Guidelines. Now slanting by use of the devices of emphasis is unavoidable, for emphasis
is simply the giving the stress to the subject matter, and so indicating what is important and what
is less important (Birk and Birk2). It s basically stressing certain words and they can produce a
positive or negative outcome. In Rich s article is in favor if Federal Guidelines, because once you
start picking the article and going over it, sentenceby sentence, she had more to say about the
inequalities that the students are facing in their schools.
Rich s article uses slating throughout the paper, trying to push the reader to favor what the
author is saying. According to Birk, Each different stress gives you a different slant (favorable
or unfavorable or balanced) to the statement because it conveys a different attitude (Birk and
Birk2). The way the author emphasis the words in the article gives you a clue, on whether they
are in favor or against or balanced. For example, some of the words are must have equal access to
comparable programs, materials and facilities (Rich). The key words that seem to be stressed on
more in must have equal which suggests that the schools have to have it, she could ve used a
different words, but instead she used those. Birk and Birk suggests that we can

Forbidden City Life Quotes
Every flower must grow through dirt this quote by Laurie Jean senott perfectly describes how you
must go through some tough times before blossoming into the best you you can be. The book
Forbidden City shows how going through tough times throughout your life strengthens and makes
you grow up more quickly. Alex and his father s experiences in China such as losing each other,
witnessing their friends being murdered and finding out what s really important in life helps them
realize that war is not a game and helped them mature throughout the novel.
Throughout the book Forbidden city, Alex faces losing his new friends because of the Chinese
army. while in Beijing, Alex makes some good friends like Lao Xu, Hong, and... Show more

Alex s dad Ted also matures greatly. When Alex and his father first witness the issues in china,
Ted is focused on getting the award winning shot of the war. Although what is happening outside
is very dangerous and scary, Ted has his mind set on getting the perfect shot and he does not care
what is in his way. He does not realize how serious the situation is until it affects him directly.
When Alex and Ted where separated, Ted realized that what s happening right outside his
window, is no longer a joke and it should be taken seriously. Ted realizing that the war is not a
joke anymore is shown when he says Then when I realized that you weren t at the hotel, that you
were gone, it wasn t a game anymore. (273) Ted realizes that this war is a very big issue that
must be stopped when he loses his son. He matures throughout that point in the book and
becomes a better more caring person. Also this whole experience makes Ted finally understands
something that Alex has been trying to teach him since the beginning of the novel. A hobby,
although you may think it s the most important thing to you. There are things that are way more
important. At the beginning of the novel Ted thinks his camera is the most important thing in
the world, but after losing Alex and seeing how people are watching their own family members
get shot in China, he says I realized it could ve been you Alex. All those kids about your age,
shot down, bleeding in the street. Any one of them could have been you. (273) His experiences
in China make him understand that he could lose Alex any second, and he definetly did not want
that reason to be because of a camera or a picture. His number one priority should not be his
camera but it should be Alex and his loved ones. Ted takes his experience in China and uses it to
understand that family always comes

Art Or Art Essay
The concept of art is very complex, and the question What is art? tends to not have a certain
answer. However, most agree that art is any form of expression, and this statement is what
everyone knows art as. For years, many people have gotten into heated discussions on whether
video games could be considered as art or not. Though these screen based games have been
legally recognized as art, the topic remains a controversy. It is imperative to understand that
video games have many artistic qualities contained within them. These games contain many
forms of art, including visual art, music, and storytelling. Therefore, video games should be
considered an art form because of the artistic efforts that go into making them. Many video
games have stories behind that provide a backstory for the main character and his or her
motivation. Video game creators make sure that their games have complex stories that teach a
lesson to the player. An example of this could be seen in game Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons.
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is a game where the player has to go on a quest with the main
character s brother to save their dying father (Mellisonos, 1). A story like this is not to simply be
dismissed. It not only provides the player with a way to keep the player occupied, but it also
gives the player insight into his or her own life. The player is able to learn the story through of the
two brothers about the importance of selflessness. Video games that are choice based,

Mayoral Political Campaigns
Holbrook, T. M., and Weinschenk, A.C. 2013. Campaigns, Mobilization, and Turnout in Mayoral
Elections. Political Research Quarterly 67(1): 42 55.
Thesis: Political campaigns, campaign activities, and campaign spending drive turnout in mayoral
elections.
Theory: Voter turnout in local elections is relatively low compared to state and federal elections.
Research that has been done on local level turnout has largely focused on institutional influences,
such as nonpartisan elections, the form of government and timing of elections (Karnig and Walter,
1983; Marschall, 2010; Hajnal and Lewis, 2003). One aspect that has been missing is campaign
influence on local mayoral election turnout. The influence of campaigns on turnout has primarily
focused on presidential and congressional races (Holbrook and McClurg, 2005). Local elections are
useful in that voters preexisting information of the elections and candidates are quite low and
additional information from campaigns would reduce information costs associated with voting ...

We Shall Overcome Summary
The article, We Shall Overcome: Promoting an Agenda for Integrating Spirituality and Community
Practice by Anthony J. Hill and Linda Plitt Donaldson (2012) detailed the role of spirituality in
social work community practice and investigated previous research conducted integrating
spirituality into community practice. The article described the relationship between organized
religionand community outreach, since many religions offer assistance to needy members of their
congregations and communities.
An important claim of the authors was the lack of studies conducted about incorporating spirituality
into community practice. Spirituality has been studied at micro levels of social work and been
found to be influential in helping individuals, therefore, it is possible that it would be beneficial in
macro practice as well, furthermore, studies should be done to determine spirituality s efficiency in
community practice (Hill Donaldson, 2012).
This article is valuable to social workers, particularly macro level workers because spirituality may
not be considered a part of community or macro social work ... Show more content on

Social workers should be aware of this fact and give religious leaders information on how to help
these individuals and inform the leaders of resources available to the victims. I spoke to a pastor
when I was contacting an organization to distribute the domestic violence survey to, and he said
domestic violence was an issue he and his wife were very passionate about. Spirituality is also
connected to the community and organizing social movements. Spirituality can help motivate
individuals towards a common purpose or goal, and religious organizations have assisted
communities in meeting needs for social change and can be an ally of community practitioners

Spanking A Child Essay
The textbook defines physical child abuse as, any act that results in a nonaccidental physical
injury by a person who has care, custody, or control of a child (p.157). Many people disagree on
what the term child abuse means. Yelling at a child or spanking a child is not considered child
abuse based on this definition. However it is possible that spankinga child can cause injury, but most
medical and legal authorities will not consider it child abuseunless the force is sufficient to leave
marks. A number of parents spank their children in order to teach them discipline when they do not
listen or act out, but because of the controversial question of whether or not spanking is child abuse
most parents have sought other forms of discipline.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Committee on the Rights of the Child in the General Comment No. 8 defines corporal
punishment as, any punishment in which physical force is used and intended to cause some
degree of pain or discomfort, however light. Most involves hitting ( smacking , slapping ,
spanking ) children, with the hand or with an implement (unicef website). Corporal punishment
has been used in schools as a method of discipline and as a form of punishment for committing a
crime. Some people will say that corporal punishment is no different from physical abuse,
because your intending to cause some degree of pain or discomfort. However from my personal
experience I went to an elementary school where they were allowed to spank the children as
long as the child s parents had signed an approval form. So needless to say if I ever got sent
down to the principles officer for acting out or being bad my parents gave the principle
permission to spank me. I believe that there is a difference between corporal punishment and
physical abuse. Corporal punishment is a method of disciplining a child or person for acting out
or for committing a crime, whereas physical abuse is causing nonaccidnetal physical injury for no
apparent reason. My parents raised me to know that if I did something bad I was bound to get a
butt whooping so I knew that if I did the same thing

Introduction
Charges of workplace discrimination is said to be at an all time high. During the 2015 fiscal year
the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity released information that claims there were more than
89,000 charges filed for workplace discrimination. One of the top ten charges is said to be
retaliation, which had an estimate 39,757 cases in 2015, which is 44.5 percent of all charges
filed. Retaliation is said to be in violation of the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, For the
purpose of this research paper I will provide the understanding of both Acts, while also taking a
case that deals with to provide the basis of the case, the findings, and the outcome of the charges.
Title VII of the Civil Act of 1964 The Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 can be found in the
United States Code (Pub. L. 88 352) Volume 42.The basis of the act Title VII is to prevent
employment discrimination against race, color, religion, sex and national origin. Title VII prohibits
an employer from both (i) discriminating against an employee on the basis of sex, and (ii)
retaliating against an employee for complaining about prior discrimination or retaliation. According
to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the purpose of the act is to enforce the

in space for the U.S., the training and preparation, helped NASAs space era, and people were up set

the knowledge of doing all of this (Animals in Space). Ham went to training like a mature person
he wouldn t get mad or not do the training he enjoyed it. His trainers said he was very friendly
and nice around people. Ham helped our space era in a big way. He was the first in space for
NASA and he was really smart. NASA knew that if Ham had survived that they would put
mankind on the moon before anyone else. NASA picked Ham because he was the closest to
human form so if something happened to him NASA would know so they could fix it if they
were to send any humans into space (Life). After the mission Ham had survived and then NASA
knew at that moment it would be possible to send humans to the moon at least, and they did.
Before sending ham into space everybody knew that this was NASA s biggest project at the
time. It also put us way ahead of the Soviet Union who at the time was our biggest and most
fierce competition. If NASA had picked a different monkey that wasn t as smart as Ham we
probably wouldn t have won the space race. Ham is the main animal that got our space era going
even better (Life). Without Ham our other smart monkeys, chimps, or even apes we wouldn t be
where we are at today in our space exploration. Ham is the one who got humans to go into space

Pearl Harbor Case Study
5c. Describe the opening moves of each side.
How did the attacking forces move their units across the line of departure?
The attacking forces, 2nd Battalion Raiders, moved their forces through the line of departure via
submarine and rubber boat. The USS Argonaut (SM 1)(EX V4) and USS Nautilus (SS 168)(EX
V6) transported rubber inflatable motor boats to the Makin Atoll (Carlson s Marine Raiders: Makin
Island 1942, Gordon L. Rottman 24 25). The transit of the troops took around 9 days from Pearl
Harbor due to its winding path to avoid obvious detection. Submarines held position within 500
yds of the reef line to deploy troops and rubber boats. The rubber boats were held within the
external torpedo storage of the submarines along with weapons and supplies for the mission
(Rottman 43). The twelve rubber boats from the Argonaut traveled towards the Nautilus, with it s
eight boats joining them, and continued towards the island. Company A (Carlson s Group) had
landed on Beach Z (actual) instead of Beach Y (planned) which was an improvement since they
re closer to the target. The Raiders made it to land but some boats got capsized causing the spread
of weapons and supplies along the beach, or separated from the group. Peatross group that was
separated from the main body had advanced towards objective despite lack of numbers.
How did the defending forces react to the attack?
The natives of the land, that were supposedly working for the Japanese, had welcomed and
hospitalized the Raiders. False information had been given to them, though, when Raiders
inquired of Japanese personnel (Rottman 46 47). The Japanese soldiers had seemingly
anticipated the attack or had been aware of it with no reports of the natives. Japanese soldiers
had been deployed close to where the path and position of the target of the Raiders (Rottman 47).
This was most likely due to the panic friendly fire shots by Raiders which had occurred frequently
throughout the Raider s presence. The Japanese had automobiles and special weaponry, such as
flamethrowers, machine guns, etc. to use on the island against the Raiders as well. The Japanese
had also placed camouflaged snipers amongst the palms in advance to pick off any hiding or
unprepared Raider

Why I Want A College
Millions of people apply to college all over the united states every year to earn a college degree.
College degrees provides more job opportunities and a higher income. As a high school senior, I
spent all year searching for a compatible college that fits my standards. I wanted a college that is
affordable, so when I graduate I am not stuck with a massive debt. Secondly, I wanted a campus
and an environment that I can feel comfortable in and not stick out. Lastly, the college must
provide me with the right skills to start my career. With those three standards, I narrowed my
choices to one perfect college. My search began with all the colleges located in the United States

to be put on antidepressants and go to therapy because of the environment. I did not want to go
through that feeling again at Cornell. I hoped for the best as I investigated the lifestyle of OSU
IT. I scheduled a campus tour and instantly felt at home since it is a small college in a small
town. The environment felt warm as well because there were places where students go to relax on
campus and to talk about their problems. Although I did not visit Cornell, I knew I would not
enjoy the more stressful environment. The only positive aspect of studying at Cornell is the label.
Employers think highly of a graduate from an ivy league and are more likely to be hired because of
its highly selective acceptance rate and challenging academics. However, OSU IT provides paid
internships and the career placement rate at 90%. After intense examination of Cornell and OSU

The World There Are Many Cultures, And Religions
In the world there are many cultures, and religions. One of the oldest cultures, and religion is
that of Jewish people. Not being jewish makes you see Jewish people in a different light.
Sometimes that light is often very different that what reality is. By going through the life of a
typical Jewish person for a week you will be able to see just how they live and what types of
things differ and are similar. And what you will find is that most often times the differences are
fewer than the similarities. Days go by very normally for jewish people most of the time. Most
of time they go about their day very similarly to everyone else. Depending on the type of person
they could go about their day differently. there are only some jewish people that still live very
traditionally like they use to in the old days. If you go through a typical day of a jewish person
this is what you would find out. When they wake up in the morning they say their daily prayer,
called service of the heart which means the first conscious thought of the day. After they say
their prayer they get ready for the day and they go to work. For breakfast and all meals through
out the day, they must be Kosher. Kosher is a way of preparation of food, for a food to be
kosher it must be prepared and presented in a way that god had intended it for. This means that if
you have dinner meats and vegetables and all separate foods must be separated. Now days most

Fidel Castro and His Legacy Was Fidel Castro the Tyrant of the Caribbean or a Great
Revolutionary? With the recent death of one of the Western Hemisphere?s most recognizable
rulers, the question arises as to the legacy of Castro and his Cuba. Castro is well known among the
Baby Boomers and Generation X citizens of the United States and Latin America. While in the
United States we are taught one view of Castro as a tyrant, many citizens of Cuba and other third
world countries and a very different view of Cuba?s greatest leader.

His revolutionary victory over Batista came very quickly. Many of the primary landowners,
business owners, professionals, and clergy stayed in Cuba, hoping that they could influence the new
government. They hoped to protect their considerable privileges they held under Batista, but that
was not in Castro?s plan for Cuba.
In 1959, Castro was appointed prime minister and began to introduce measures that would distribute
the wealth and increase financial support in the rural areas of Cuba. In May, an agricultural reform
act limited the size of most farms. The government also began to build hundreds of new schools and
training thousands of additional teachers. Health care was extended to the entire population for the
first time with the construction of clinics and hospitals in the countryside and plantation areas of
Cuba. Education and health care are the two most significant contributions that Castro has left as a
legacy.
Fagen reported that Castro was perceived as a charismatic leader by a large portion of the Cuban
population. He also stated that Castro?s ?voice and visage blanketed the island? (p. 278) in the
early years of his reign. But the use of revolutionary tribunals to judge and then execute
approximately 500 members of Batista?s police and security agencies was popular with the Cuban
masses. This forced many of those who had been associated with the old regime to seek refuge

Benefits Of Paid Maternity Leave Essay
Benefits of Paid Maternity Leave Two unlikely countries have one unlikely thing in common. The
United States of America and Papua New Guinea are the only two countries worldwide that do not
have paid maternity leave. The United States effort to pass paid maternity leave goes back to the
1920s. In the years since, most other countries have guaranteed a salary for mothers taking time off,
and some even cover father s paternity leaves. Through countries with paid leave, we have learned
the many ways paid leave helps babies, parents, and entire families (Rubin 1). So why has the
United Statesnot yet created a paid leave mandate? In 1993, President Bill Clinton signed into law
the Family and Medical Leave Act. This act mandates a minimum of twelve weeks of unpaid
leave for qualifying reasons, including the birth of a child (White House 4). When I was born,
my mother was given the opportunity, through her work, to apply for disability insurance. The
insurance, paid for by her employer, covered pay for approximately 70% of her salary for six weeks
of leave. There was no pay given for the other six weeks provided for by the Family and Medical
Leave Act. My mother s employer gave her many health benefits and the flexibility she needed
when she had her children. The business community is not opposed to paid leave, as it is recorded
that over fifty percent of working U.S. citizen have paid leave and paid vacation, according to the
Labor Department. The National

Definition Of Clinical Governance And Accountability
Introduction:
Within this assignment, the definition of clinical governance and accountability will be explored
and discussed using a literature search. A case example will be used and briefly discuss the
accountability of the nurse and other health professionals of professional standards, local polices
and law. Confidentiality has been maintained within the use of the case example.
A literature search was carried out for clinical governance using the British Nursing Index (BNI).
Results originated from 9,616 when Clinical Governance was inputted. Results reduced
significantly when definition of clinical governance was inputted to 1,278 into the BNI titles
were read, before articles were chosen for abstracts to be read. After abstracts were read, if
appropriate the full articles were read (see appendices 1). Clinical governance was first introduced
by the World Health Organisation (WHO) (Som, 2009) . Som, (2004) definition of clinical
governance focuses on Managing systems to improve outcomes of health care service delivery, the
WHO (1998) definition also focuses on improving health care services but additionally focuses on
professional performance, resource allocation risk management and patient satisfaction. Department
of Health (DoH) (1998) has described clinical governance as a framework which focuses on
accountability of health care services to improve services. Scally and Donaldson (1998) used the
same definition in 1998. A contemporary definition from Nutbeam

An Introduction To A Vapor Cloud Explosion
An Analysis of a Vapor Cloud Explosion
Introduction
Flammable gasses can be very dangerous mostly when it comes to highly volatile products. This is
because they can evaporate at very low temperatures, may be room temperature and due to their
low energy of activation to react. Highly volatile products are that dangerous because they cannot
be seen, can evaporate any single moment regardless of the size of leakage, they spread very fast
among many other risks. This was the case at one of the manufacturing plants in Massachusetts,
Arnel chemical plant. The plant was responsible for manufacturing printer paints On November 21,

study recently analyzed was to assess the reproductive impact of BPA leached from regularly

placed in, and bred them in the polycarbonate containers. A control group was created using water
bottles without the infection of these creatures. A GC MS machine to detect the level of BPA
released by each polycarbonate plastic then evaluated the water. An increase in the reproduction of
BPA was detected when the Daphnia Magna were bred inside the container. Although these

He felt that there was a need to change the day to day operation of the US government from a
corruptive agency spiraling into a web of bureaucratic mess to a more productive governing system
supported by the an administrative base that will be able to enforce public interest and policy. This
scholar and later President wrote that there should be a science of administration which shall seek
to straighten the paths of government, to make its business less unbusinesslike ; to strengthen and
purify its organization, and to crown its duties with dutifulness (Stillman page 8). Apparently,
Woodrow Wilson favored the private sector s interest in businesslike operations and its efficiency
as a way to run the government and its agency. From his 1887 essay, he favored the idea of
concentrating power in a single authority atop a highly integrated centralized administrative
structure (Denhardt page 2).
Principles behind Public Administration
Woodrow Wilson along with scholar Leonard D. White and others believed that this field would
evolve and be interwoven within the fabric of American government, public agencies/programs,
associations, and nonprofit organizations. Public administration is not concerned with politics or
any associated with it however, the field promotes high level public service through management

Global C Suite Programme On Corporate Executives Essay
INTRODUCTION
A recent study conducted by IBM under its Global C suite programme on corporate executives
revealed that a comparatively low percentage of New Zealand business hold that they understand
their customers (IBM Global Business Services, 2014). According to the study, only sixteen
percent of top corporate executives (CEOs, CFOs, COOs and other C level executives) in New
Zealand believe that they understand their clients or consumers. The figure is relatively low if
compared to the global total of thirty five percent considering the advance economy of the country.
The article also pointed out that significant efforts will be made to improve New Zealand s overall
percentage performance to around 82% in the next 3to 5 years.
The study also introduced a new business model in the social media digital age being the
everyone to everyone or e2e economy. What makes it different from the two major types of e
business (Xu Quaddus, 2010) being business to business (B2B) and business to consumer (B2C)
that we have come to know of is the creation of business ecosystems that focuses on the individual
customer, the level of customer experience and engagement, freedom of movement, highly
interactive, transparent and promote synergetic existence among industry players. The growth of
online transactions as well as influence of social media on customer buying decisions are expected

James Joyce s Araby Essay
Araby by James Joyce
In quot;Araby quot; James Joyce explores the theme that adulthood is not always what it seems.
The narrator in the story is the main character and he demonstrates this theme when he falls in love
with the girl in his neighborhood. In the beginning the young boy is too shy to express his feeling
towards her. Later in the story he tells her of a present that he is going to bring her from the
bazzar. Lastly he realizes that he has failed and now has lost his chance with this girl and is
quot;driven by anguish and derided by vanity quot; (Joyce).

her, however that is not a reality( quot;Dream quot;).
Later in the story the girl approaches him and asks quot; Are you going to bazaar? quot; and the
boy replies quot;If I go, I will bring you something quot;. The boy is now excited about this
chance to impress her by bringing her a gift. He runs back home and patiently awaits his uncle to
give him money. He knows that this is the only chance he has to get this girl to like him and he is
getting nervous because its getting late and his uncle is not yet back (Joyce).
In the article entitled quot;Analysis quot; the author states this story deals with longing for
adventure and escape. The boy is becoming a man and he is going through the changes from
childhood to adulthood. He is now faced with a problem of first the girl and now the bazaar to

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Bioremediation
a better and a more cost effective option.
Bioremediation is a process which employs microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes and
algae for the cleanup of the environment contaminated with pollutants. Bioremediation is of many
types, which are biostimulation, bioaugmentation, intrinsic bioremediation, phytoremediation,
bioventing, bioleaching, land farming, composting, rhizofiltration and bioreactors. Biostimulation
refers to the method where the environment acts as the stimulant and it stimulates or motivates the
microorganisms to carry out bioremediation. This stimulant is usually in the form of nutrients made
available to these microorganisms. The nutrients supplied are either carbon sources, nitrogen
sources, phosphate, electron acceptors etc. bioaugmentation is the introduction of certain actively
growing microflora which in turn induce the resident microflora to carry out the bioremediation
process. Intrinsic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The contaminated sites are directly treated using the microorganisms. Underground petroleum pipes
sometimes have leakages. Such sites of contamination are directly treated with microorganisms that
can degrade petroleum hydrocarbons. The same is applicable in case of oil spills and heavy metal
contamination. Phytoremediation is brought about by certain special plants which can take up the
pollutants and make them less available in the soil. Some examples of such plants are mustard,
alpine pennycress, hemp and pigweed. When the soil which is to be treated with the
microorganisms is stimulated by providing it with oxygen, it is known as bioventing. Bioleaching
is a process where living organisms or microorganisms are used to extract metals from their
respective ores. This process ensures that there is not much expenditure of both chemicals and
energy to bring about the extraction. Land farming refers to amending the soil with organic
amendments like vermicompost, bulking agents etc which are tilled into

Holes Character Analysis
Stanley Yelnats is the main character in the book Holes, written by Louis Sachar. Stanley is an
overweight 14 year old boy who has to spend 18 months at Camp Green Lake, a juvenile
correctional facility, because he is wrongly accused for stealing the shoes of the famous baseball
player, Clyde Livingston. In the book, the author portrays Stanley as a young boy who is
unlucky because of a family curse. However, during his stay at Camp Green Lake, Stanley
discovers other traits about himself that he didn t know that he had. In addition to his unlucky
trait, bravery and kindness are also characteristics that can be used to describe Stanley. Stanley
considers himself an unlucky person. He thinks that he and his family have been cursed because
of his no good dirty rotten pig stealing great great grandfather. Stanley is unlucky because he does
not have any friends at school, his teachers sometimes make hurtful comments about him, his
family is poor, he lives in a small apartment, and his father is an unsuccessful inventor. What
makes Stanley feel really unlucky is that he s being punished for a crime he did not commit.
Stanley did not steal Clyde Livingston s shoes. He happened to be walking under an overpass when
the shoes fell on him. Unfortunately, since the shoes happened to be in his hands when the police
showed up, he was found guilty and sent to Camp Green Lake. On page 7, the author points out that
Stanley has this unlucky trait about him by stating that

Power Corruption in Heart of Darkness Essay
In Joseph Conrad s Heart of Darkness, the author fiercely challenges imperialism. Through this
challenge, he demonstrates the internal battles of good and evil. In his work, he also displays
issues of personal morals and alienation. At the time the novella was written, Europe had
established territories across the map. It holds true that power corrupts and absolute power
corrupts absolutely, especially when said power reigns over the fate of humans in society. Conrad
illustrates the corruption of power through the books motif of darkness and the renegade of Kurtz.
Darkness makes a quick appearance in the literature because it s in the title. Darkness is seen on

The standard in the Victorian era was the men were far away, while the women were morally
supportive, but oblivious to the reality of the man s work, although they economically benefitted
from it. This proves the way power corrupts because Kurtz abused the opportunities given after
falling from the edge of moral standards, even after his Intended attempts to show him the way. In
1902, when Conrad wrote the book, it was common to base culture off of superiority, therefore it
was seen that Kurtz was in the Congo for the redemption of natives. In the text, Joseph Conrad
gives much respect to the native tribes, Mr. Kurtz, however, has none. Exterminate all brutes!
(Conrad 50) he says, claiming that if he cannot change the natives, they should be thrown out. He,
and many people like him, introduced new cultures to societies that did not want it. The
corruption of the spirituality found in some cultures is thus caused by the hunger for power from
interference from separate societies. Power and happiness go hand in hand. When one abuses
power it reveal their limitations and perhaps inability to maintain power to help the greater good.
One of these may be the differences in laws for those in a position in power and those who are
not, and abuse occurs through moral differences in such society. Everything belonged to him but
that was a trifle. The thing to know was what he belonged to, how many powers of

The Appeal to Female Dominance: Skyy Vodka The advertisement is specifically directed

and body who seems to be passed out with his arms spread apart with a tie covering his eyes. The
foreground shows the man womanis in her apartment, while the background is red and in the
upper left hand corner of the page it says #18 She Wins. The first thing the ad demonstrates is
empowered women who are in control of their sexuality and can get what they want in a

body language, clothes, red setting and title. The other thing it appeals to is wealth from which is

Due to the losses that the business has experienced in the past 3 years, it is critical to take action

Informative Speech About Ebola
Today I will be writing about Ebola and if it will become a worldwide pandemic.
To start off, I will briefly explain what Ebola is. Ebola (also known as Ebola Virus Disease or
EVD) is a severe virus that started in late 1996 and was first misdiagnosed as a new form of
malaria. I can understand why they diagnosed the patients with malaria, the early symptoms were
similar, but the main reason is that they never knew Ebola even existed. Soon after, 1st September
to be more precise, there was a large outbreak and there were approximately [1]280 deaths and
only 38 confirmed survivors. The Ebola virus can spread very easily even though it is not
airborne, though it is waterborne and can be passed on through close contact as well as STD s
and through mother to child. The area that has been most infected is in Africa because of the lack
of facilities and healthcare staff available in the area as well as poor training. Another reason is
that the burial rituals include kissing touching and close contact. This causes Ebola to spread faster
since it can stay on a dead persons body for up to six months
There are many symptoms for Ebola including the following;
[2] Fever
Severe headache
Joint and muscle aches
Chills
Weakness
Nausea and vomiting
Diarrhoea (may be bloody)
Red eyes
Raised rash
Chest pain and cough
Stomach pain
Severe weight loss
Bleeding, usually from the eyes, and bruising (people near death may bleed from other orifices,
such as ears, nose, and rectum)

Definition Of A Bad Person Analysis
The Definition of a Bad Person The only people who care about privacy, the only people who will
seek out privacy, are by definition bad people is a quote by Glenn Greenwald explaining his view
on privacy. His view is that people that want privacy have something to hide and, therefore, are
deemed to be a bad person. My view, on the other hand, is a complete opposite one of Mr.
Greenwald. I feel that most people want privacyin order to get that safe feeling in their mind and
make them feel better as they know that whatever they are doing will not and cannot escape to
the public. Maybe they don t want others to judge them, after all, isn t that what the world is
mostly made up of today? Different people have different styles, but there are people who have
social media and post things because they want to be judged while others refrain and sit back.
Even though their style is different, people without social media probably still have good things to
share but simply would rather not share it, thus wanting privacy. Does that make them a bad
person? In Glenn Greenwald s eyes I guess so, but in mine, no.... Show more content on

Social Impacts Of The Industrial Revolution
1.a The Industrial Revolution began in Britain in the 1700 s and took place in Europe and the
USA in the 18th and 19th century. In the years before the Industrial Revolution, manufacturing was
often done in people s homes, using handtools or basic machines.
Industrialization marked a shift to powered, special purpose machinery, factories and mass
production. The iron and textile industries, along with the development of the steam engine, played
central roles in the Industrial Revolution, which also saw improved systems of transportation,
communication and banking. Along with this increased production of goods and material the
Revolution also changed the world socially, economically and politically. The free market of the
nations undergoing this revolution, with no restraints set by the government, meant there were
no laws against who could work and who couldn t meaning many children were put into the
work force at a young age and were physically and mentally traumatised by this hard labour, older
workers also suffered poor working conditions but they were also worked hard so that they had
little time for recreation and thus becoming sombre people, poor living conditions were
accentuated by the poor health of people as urban overcrowding lead to poor diets and poor
sanitation, these are examples of the impacts of the Industrial Revolution socially. The revolution
brought about a great deal of change economically. This change is evident in the emergence of the
middle class

reported in Asia in February 2003 and spread to over two dozen countries before being contained
(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2005). Once infected, individuals with
SARS initially develop a high fever and other flu like symptoms including headache, body aches
and overall feeling of discomfort before, in most cases, progressing to pneumonia (CDC, 2005).
The disease was first diagnosed in a middle aged man who had flown from China to Hong Kong. A
few days after the announcement of the disease, rumors and panic began to spread, causing... Show

14). Routes of Transmission In the laboratory setting, the virus was found in respiratory droplets,
feces, saliva, tears and urine (WHO/DCDSR, 2003). SARS is primarily spread through close,
personal contact, such as kissing, hugging, eating or drinking, as well as being within 3 feet of a
person who coughs or sneezes while infected and shedding the virus. These activities allow the
respiratory droplets shed during these activities to come in contact with mucous membranes
found in the eyes, nose and mouth (Kutsar, 2004). Other modes of transmission include
aerosolizing procedures in hospital settings and contamination of surfaces in healthcare facilities,
households and other closed environments (Kutsar, 2004, para. 12). There has been no
confirmation of fecal oral transmission or of transmission via water or food; however, over one
third of the earliest cases in China were among food handlers (Kutsar, 2004). Finally, there is a
possibility of animal vector transmission, as discussed in regards to the Hong Kong s Amoy
Gardens (WHO/DCDSR, 2003). Effect of Outbreak on Community The SARS outbreak caused
major effects on the communities affected. Based on the 2003 outbreak, one can assume similar
issues would develop should the disease recur. The biggest impact to communities affected would
be the strain on the healthcare system. Since SARS is a largely respiratory disease, it can cause
very serious problems in the patients infected, requiring

The Life and Opinions of Tristam Shandy Essay
The term identity is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as blah blah blah . This concept can
be viewed as personal and individual to one s self, and is distinguished as an umbrella term to
attributes such as; consciousness, heritage, name, appearance, and the soul. As Sterne s novel
Tristram Shandy draws influence from John Locke s An Essay of Human Understanding, in which
Locke discusses the origin of personal identity, the individual identity is evidently reflected within
the text. The novel demonstrates Sterne s interpretation of the personal identity through the
construction of each of his unique characterisations. Tristram Shandy discusses the concept and
origin of the individuality identity both reflecting and opposing... Show more content on

Sterne can be seen to draw influence from the 18th Century philosopher, John Locke. Locke
discusses the theory that individual identity is formed through consciousness and experience, and
not upon the soul and body; this may show us wherein personal identity consists: not in the identity
of substance, but, as I have said, in the identity of consciousness. (Locke). As Tristram believes the
other misfortunate experiences within his childhood amount to his individual identity, this also
suggests an origin of identity developed from his personal experiences. He believes that
experiencing the many misfortunes such as his accidental naming and castration, disturbance as a
homunculus and broken nose reshape his identity and that he is in a sense doomed to live a
misfortunate life. In response to reading Tristram Shandy alongside the work of Locke, Heather
Keenleyside states that such readings often understand Tristram Shandy as a novelization of Locke
s much discussed distinction [...] On this view, Tristram Shandy follows Locke in arguing for the
priority of personal identity over the body and its associates: the family and the species, birth and
death. (Keenleyside, pg117) The protagonist states that the soul and body are joint sharers in
everything they get (Sterne, pg435), composing them as separate but equal quantities of his

Ilm
Introduction
The goal of the Change Management process is to ensure that standardised methods and procedures
are used for efficient and prompt handling of all Changes, in order to minimise the impact of
Change related Incidents upon service quality, and consequently to improve the day to day
operations of the organisation.
In this report I have outline EMC s main reasons for implementing the Information lifecycle
management (ILM) project, the problems associated with implementing the project and possible
ways to overcome these issues.
In the main body of the report I will give an account of the years leading up to the implementation
of the ILM project. This is an important factor as the industry was in a recession at the time and ...

Before the downturn EMC was capable of making million dollar deals, after the downturn the
market for such deals simply did not exist. While certain surveys show IT spending growing, I
believe most companies will be extremely cautious in increasing their IT spending during 2003, I
do believe there s a bias toward the positive, but no one s willing to commit to increased spending
before they see how the year develops.
The larger companies in the market where not prepared to make such big deals at that time, so
EMC targeted the smaller companies in the market. Two important factors to consider when
selecting a target market segment are the attractiveness of the segment and the fit between the
segment and the firm s objectives, resources, and capabilities.
EMC still expects to invest $1 billion in research and development during 2001, and is investing
heavily in its internal information technology infrastructure and looking for areas where it can
build talent in several strategic areas.
Due to the steps taken above, EMC was perfectly placed to progress in the market. They had built
a sold base during the dot com shakeout without neglecting key resources such are R D, this was
the best decision made by top management during the shake out years. Although money was tight,
top management knew the importance of R D if were to grow into the future. This decision has
aided EMC s move to ILM a great deal.

Dopamine Research Papers
The Functions of Dopamine on the Brain Research Paper
Dopamine is mostly referred to as the pleasure chemical. Although this is true, there are many other
functions and effects dopamine has on the brain. Dopamine is produced in the dopaminergic
neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) of the midbrain, the substantia nigra pars compacta,
and the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus (Mandal). It is released to activate and assist the
following: movement, memory, pleasure, social functions, attention, and milk production.
Dopamine has a huge role in the movement of the human body, assisting it in efficient coordination.
These actions occur in the dopamine receptors, D1 5 (Mandal). A part of the braincalled the basal
ganglia regulates ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dopamine is commonly associated with the pleasure system of the brain, providing feelings of
enjoyment and reinforcement to motivate us to do, or continue to do, certain activities
(Dopamine). Animals and humans get these feeling when carrying out natural and necessary tasks.
The chemical is released by naturally rewarding experiences such as food, sex, abuse of drugs (like
cocaine and amphetamines), and neural stimuli that become associated with them (Dopamine). It s
often discussed in terms of drugs and in relation to neurobiological theories of addiction, which
argue that these dopamine pathways are pathologically altered in addicted people (Dopamine).
If an owner were to reward his or her puppy because it peed on the floor, he or she cannot blame
the creature for its bad habits. This is why it is so difficult for addicts to quit. But because
humans have a sense of awareness, they are able to control their decisions. Psychoactive drugs
are believed to exert their euphoric effects by stimulating dopamine release. Release of the
neurotransmitter results in feelings of pleasure and reward and contributes to reinforcement of the
behavior that led to dopamine release (Clouse). These drugs are used to treat mental disorders
such as schizophrenia or bipolar. However, dopamine is not just the reward chemical , but, as
more evidence has shown, it is also released when unpleasant or aversive stimuli are encountered
(Dopamine). Drugs that are known to reduce dopamine activity (such as antipsychotics) have
proven to reduce desire for pleasure (Dopamine). Many of these drugs are used to treat

Comparing The Australian And Indonesian Economy
Transcript: Comparison of the Australian and Indonesian economy
Australian living standards are higher than Indonesia s, this is a result of Australia maintaining
higher economic performance through superior economic indicators. Australia s economic
indicators reflect a mature and relatively stable economic growth with a population 1/10th of
Indonesia s, in comparison, Indonesia s economy reflects a growing developing economy. Indonesia
s economic trends are improving at a rapid rate and if this trend continues, Indonesia could have in
the mid to long term superior economic growth and thus higher living standards than Australia.
Particularly as Indonesia has a young population to fuel this.
To determine living standards we must know what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Figure 2 it is evident that Indonesia s cost of living, as reflected by the CPI, has been
significantly deteriorating over the last 8 years. Although research argues that CPI may not be
an effective indicator of the cost of living for a developing country such as Indonesia (East Asia,
2015). In contrast measuring the percentage of a household budget that goes to food is could be
a good indicator. Since 2000, the percentage of household budget spent on food has declined,
meaning higher expenditure on discretionary goods and services. This indicates that Indonesia s
urban regions are getting richer faster than the impression expressed with the CPI (East Asia,
2015). This is also reflected in figure 1, as the significant increase of mobile phone subscriptions
is a good proxy of increased living standards as a mobile phone is a discretionary living cost. This
is a result of the Indonesian growth rate earning a higher level of surplus income to spend on more
luxury items.
Figure 1, Australia s GDP growth (The World Bank, 2016)
Figure 2, Australia and Indonesia s GDP and CPI, (The World Bank, 2016)
As you can see in figure 2, the Indonesian GDP grew 144% from 2006, in monetary value this
equates to $364 Billion to

except brace yourself upright using your elbows and forearms on the ground. Keep your back
straight and hold your abs tight, you should start to feel the burn quickly. To work on your
oblique muscles, you will perform side planks. To perform this variation roll over to one side,
with your elbow and forearm supporting you, and your feet and back straight, hold yourself up for
as long as you can, then repeat for the other side.
By utilizing these three vertical jump exercises, you should be able to add several inches to
your vertical jump in just a few months time. It s not an exercise, but another tip to improve
your vertical jump would be simply to follow a lose body fat guide weighing less will have a strong

in the government, support the system by obeying the laws and if they disagreed with the policies
their abilities to challenge the unfair laws legally. Not only does it allow citizens to fight for justice
and equality, but it will enable them to make a difference in their community. If the people of the

  • 2. Analysis Of The Article Selection, Slanting, And Charged... According to Birk and Birk in Selection, Slanting, and Charged Language , the word slanting could be used for or against or it can be used both ways. In Mokoto Rich s article is for the Federal Guidelines. Now slanting by use of the devices of emphasis is unavoidable, for emphasis is simply the giving the stress to the subject matter, and so indicating what is important and what is less important (Birk and Birk2). It s basically stressing certain words and they can produce a positive or negative outcome. In Rich s article is in favor if Federal Guidelines, because once you start picking the article and going over it, sentenceby sentence, she had more to say about the inequalities that the students are facing in their schools. Rich s article uses slating throughout the paper, trying to push the reader to favor what the author is saying. According to Birk, Each different stress gives you a different slant (favorable or unfavorable or balanced) to the statement because it conveys a different attitude (Birk and Birk2). The way the author emphasis the words in the article gives you a clue, on whether they are in favor or against or balanced. For example, some of the words are must have equal access to comparable programs, materials and facilities (Rich). The key words that seem to be stressed on more in must have equal which suggests that the schools have to have it, she could ve used a different words, but instead she used those. He does not realize how serious the situation is until it affects him directly. When Alex and Ted where separated, Ted realized that what s happening right outside his window, is no longer a joke and it should be taken seriously. Also this whole experience makes Ted finally understands something that Alex has been trying to teach him since the beginning of the novel. A hobby, although you may think it s the most important thing to you. There are things that are way more important. At the beginning of the novel Ted thinks his camera is the most important thing in the world, but after losing Alex and seeing how people are watching their own family members get shot in China, he says I realized it could ve been you Alex. All those kids about your age, shot down, bleeding in the street. Any one of them could have been you. (273) His experiences in China make him understand that he could lose Alex any second, and he definetly did not want that reason to be because of a camera or a picture. • 4. Art Or Art Essay The concept of art is very complex, and the question What is art? tends to not have a certain answer. However, most agree that art is any form of expression, and this statement is what everyone knows art as. For years, many people have gotten into heated discussions on whether video games could be considered as art or not. Though these screen based games have been legally recognized as art, the topic remains a controversy. It is imperative to understand that video games have many artistic qualities contained within them. These games contain many forms of art, including visual art, music, and storytelling. Therefore, video games should be considered an art form because of the artistic efforts that go into making them. Many video games have stories behind that provide a backstory for the main character and his or her motivation. Video game creators make sure that their games have complex stories that teach a lesson to the player. An example of this could be seen in game Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is a game where the player has to go on a quest with the main character s brother to save their dying father (Mellisonos, 1). A story like this is not to simply be dismissed. It not only provides the player with a way to keep the player occupied, but it also gives the player insight into his or her own life. The player is able to learn the story through of the two brothers about the importance of selflessness. Video games that are choice based, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Thesis: Political campaigns, campaign activities, and campaign spending drive turnout in mayoral elections. Theory: Voter turnout in local elections is relatively low compared to state and federal elections. Research that has been done on local level turnout has largely focused on institutional influences, such as nonpartisan elections, the form of government and timing of elections (Karnig and Walter, 1983; Marschall, 2010; Hajnal and Lewis, 2003). One aspect that has been missing is campaign influence on local mayoral election turnout. The influence of campaigns on turnout has primarily focused on presidential and congressional races (Holbrook and McClurg, 2005). Local elections are useful in that voters preexisting information of the elections and candidates are quite low and additional information from campaigns would reduce information costs associated with voting ... • 6. We Shall Overcome Summary The article, We Shall Overcome: Promoting an Agenda for Integrating Spirituality and Community Practice by Anthony J. Hill and Linda Plitt Donaldson (2012) detailed the role of spirituality in social work community practice and investigated previous research conducted integrating spirituality into community practice. The article described the relationship between organized religionand community outreach, since many religions offer assistance to needy members of their congregations and communities. An important claim of the authors was the lack of studies conducted about incorporating spirituality into community practice. Spirituality has been studied at micro levels of social work and been found to be influential in helping individuals, therefore, it is possible that it would be beneficial in macro practice as well, furthermore, studies should be done to determine spirituality s efficiency in community practice (Hill Donaldson, 2012). • 7. Spanking A Child Essay The textbook defines physical child abuse as, any act that results in a nonaccidental physical injury by a person who has care, custody, or control of a child (p.157). Many people disagree on what the term child abuse means. Yelling at a child or spanking a child is not considered child abuse based on this definition. However it is possible that spankinga child can cause injury, but most medical and legal authorities will not consider it child abuseunless the force is sufficient to leave marks. A number of parents spank their children in order to teach them discipline when they do not listen or act out, but because of the controversial question of whether or not spanking is child abuse most parents have sought other forms of discipline.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Committee on the Rights of the Child in the General Comment No. 8 defines corporal punishment as, any punishment in which physical force is used and intended to cause some degree of pain or discomfort, however light. Most involves hitting ( smacking , slapping , spanking ) children, with the hand or with an implement (unicef website). Corporal punishment has been used in schools as a method of discipline and as a form of punishment for committing a crime. Some people will say that corporal punishment is no different from physical abuse, because your intending to cause some degree of pain or discomfort. However from my personal experience I went to an elementary school where they were allowed to spank the children as long as the child s parents had signed an approval form. So needless to say if I ever got sent down to the principles officer for acting out or being bad my parents gave the principle permission to spank me. I believe that there is a difference between corporal punishment and physical abuse. Corporal punishment is a method of disciplining a child or person for acting out or for committing a crime, whereas physical abuse is causing nonaccidnetal physical injury for no apparent reason. • 11. Pearl Harbor Case Study 5c. Describe the opening moves of each side. How did the attacking forces move their units across the line of departure? The attacking forces, 2nd Battalion Raiders, moved their forces through the line of departure via submarine and rubber boat. The USS Argonaut (SM 1)(EX V4) and USS Nautilus (SS 168)(EX V6) transported rubber inflatable motor boats to the Makin Atoll (Carlson s Marine Raiders: Makin Island 1942, Gordon L. Rottman 24 25). The transit of the troops took around 9 days from Pearl Harbor due to its winding path to avoid obvious detection. Submarines held position within 500 yds of the reef line to deploy troops and rubber boats. The rubber boats were held within the external torpedo storage of the submarines along with weapons and supplies for the mission (Rottman 43). The twelve rubber boats from the Argonaut traveled towards the Nautilus, with it s eight boats joining them, and continued towards the island. Company A (Carlson s Group) had landed on Beach Z (actual) instead of Beach Y (planned) which was an improvement since they re closer to the target. The Raiders made it to land but some boats got capsized causing the spread of weapons and supplies along the beach, or separated from the group. Peatross group that was separated from the main body had advanced towards objective despite lack of numbers. How did the defending forces react to the attack? The natives of the land, that were supposedly working for the Japanese, had welcomed and hospitalized the Raiders. False information had been given to them, though, when Raiders inquired of Japanese personnel (Rottman 46 47). The Japanese soldiers had seemingly anticipated the attack or had been aware of it with no reports of the natives. Japanese soldiers had been deployed close to where the path and position of the target of the Raiders (Rottman 47). This was most likely due to the panic friendly fire shots by Raiders which had occurred frequently throughout the Raider s presence. The Japanese had automobiles and special weaponry, such as flamethrowers, machine guns, etc. to use on the island against the Raiders as well. In 1959, Castro was appointed prime minister and began to introduce measures that would distribute the wealth and increase financial support in the rural areas of Cuba. In May, an agricultural reform act limited the size of most farms. The government also began to build hundreds of new schools and training thousands of additional teachers. Health care was extended to the entire population for the first time with the construction of clinics and hospitals in the countryside and plantation areas of Cuba. • 15. Benefits Of Paid Maternity Leave Essay Benefits of Paid Maternity Leave Two unlikely countries have one unlikely thing in common. The United States of America and Papua New Guinea are the only two countries worldwide that do not have paid maternity leave. The United States effort to pass paid maternity leave goes back to the 1920s. In the years since, most other countries have guaranteed a salary for mothers taking time off, and some even cover father s paternity leaves. Through countries with paid leave, we have learned the many ways paid leave helps babies, parents, and entire families (Rubin 1). So why has the United Statesnot yet created a paid leave mandate? In 1993, President Bill Clinton signed into law the Family and Medical Leave Act. This act mandates a minimum of twelve weeks of unpaid leave for qualifying reasons, including the birth of a child (White House 4). When I was born, my mother was given the opportunity, through her work, to apply for disability insurance. The insurance, paid for by her employer, covered pay for approximately 70% of her salary for six weeks of leave. There was no pay given for the other six weeks provided for by the Family and Medical Leave Act. My mother s employer gave her many health benefits and the flexibility she needed when she had her children. The overall food contamination by Bisphenol A is unknown, but the nutrition/ health impact of this chemical is an important subject to be discussed for all individuals. The main aim of one study recently analyzed was to assess the reproductive impact of BPA leached from regularly available polycarbonate plastic containers. The bottles specifically chosen for testing were those that were used by children. The migration of BPA occurs in polycarbonateplastics (i.e. water bottles and baby bottles). Toxicology reports show society the importance of evaluating these products before purchase and consumption as a consumer. For a particular experiment, researchers used Daphnia Magna, a small flea that cleans and absorbs particles that infect the solution they are placed in, and bred them in the polycarbonate containers. A control group was created using water bottles without the infection of these creatures. A GC MS machine to detect the level of BPA released by each polycarbonate plastic then evaluated the water. An increase in the reproduction of BPA was detected when the Daphnia Magna were bred inside the container. Although these organisms effected the leaching of Bisphenol A, the GC MS was able to detect, through the control group, that BPA is released without DM. An Eco toxicological effect was observed through all of this testing, and provided evidence to substantiate the fact that Bisphenol A is leached from polycarbonate plastics. The BPA was further analyzed in the Daphnia ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Through this challenge, he demonstrates the internal battles of good and evil. In his work, he also displays issues of personal morals and alienation. At the time the novella was written, Europe had established territories across the map. It holds true that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely, especially when said power reigns over the fate of humans in society. The standard in the Victorian era was the men were far away, while the women were morally supportive, but oblivious to the reality of the man s work, although they economically benefitted from it. This proves the way power corrupts because Kurtz abused the opportunities given after falling from the edge of moral standards, even after his Intended attempts to show him the way. In 1902, when Conrad wrote the book, it was common to base culture off of superiority, therefore it was seen that Kurtz was in the Congo for the redemption of natives. In the text, Joseph Conrad gives much respect to the native tribes, Mr. Kurtz, however, has none. Exterminate all brutes! (Conrad 50) he says, claiming that if he cannot change the natives, they should be thrown out. He, and many people like him, introduced new cultures to societies that did not want it. The corruption of the spirituality found in some cultures is thus caused by the hunger for power from interference from separate societies. Power and happiness go hand in hand. When one abuses power it reveal their limitations and perhaps inability to maintain power to help the greater good. Ebola (also known as Ebola Virus Disease or EVD) is a severe virus that started in late 1996 and was first misdiagnosed as a new form of malaria. I can understand why they diagnosed the patients with malaria, the early symptoms were similar, but the main reason is that they never knew Ebola even existed. Soon after, 1st September to be more precise, there was a large outbreak and there were approximately [1]280 deaths and only 38 confirmed survivors. The Ebola virus can spread very easily even though it is not airborne, though it is waterborne and can be passed on through close contact as well as STD s and through mother to child. The area that has been most infected is in Africa because of the lack of facilities and healthcare staff available in the area as well as poor training. Another reason is that the burial rituals include kissing touching and close contact. This causes Ebola to spread faster since it can stay on a dead persons body for up to six months There are many symptoms for Ebola including the following; [2] Fever Severe headache Joint and muscle aches Chills Weakness Nausea and vomiting Diarrhoea (may be bloody) Red eyes Raised rash Chest pain and cough Stomach pain Severe weight loss Bleeding, usually from the eyes, and bruising (people near death may bleed from other orifices, such as ears, nose, and rectum) Internal bleeding ... Different people have different styles, but there are people who have social media and post things because they want to be judged while others refrain and sit back. In the years before the Industrial Revolution, manufacturing was often done in people s homes, using handtools or basic machines. Industrialization marked a shift to powered, special purpose machinery, factories and mass production. The iron and textile industries, along with the development of the steam engine, played central roles in the Industrial Revolution, which also saw improved systems of transportation, communication and banking. Along with this increased production of goods and material the Revolution also changed the world socially, economically and politically. The free market of the nations undergoing this revolution, with no restraints set by the government, meant there were no laws against who could work and who couldn t meaning many children were put into the work force at a young age and were physically and mentally traumatised by this hard labour, older workers also suffered poor working conditions but they were also worked hard so that they had little time for recreation and thus becoming sombre people, poor living conditions were accentuated by the poor health of people as urban overcrowding lead to poor diets and poor sanitation, these are examples of the impacts of the Industrial Revolution socially. The revolution brought about a great deal of change economically. This change is evident in the emergence of the middle class and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Community Health in the Event of a Sars Outbreak Essay Community Health in the Event of a SARS Outbreak The SARS Outbreak of 2003 SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) is a respiratory illness caused by a coronavirus, originally reported in Asia in February 2003 and spread to over two dozen countries before being contained (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2005). Once infected, individuals with SARS initially develop a high fever and other flu like symptoms including headache, body aches and overall feeling of discomfort before, in most cases, progressing to pneumonia (CDC, 2005). The disease was first diagnosed in a middle aged man who had flown from China to Hong Kong. A few days after the announcement of the disease, rumors and panic began to spread, causing... SARS is primarily spread through close, personal contact, such as kissing, hugging, eating or drinking, as well as being within 3 feet of a person who coughs or sneezes while infected and shedding the virus. These activities allow the respiratory droplets shed during these activities to come in contact with mucous membranes found in the eyes, nose and mouth (Kutsar, 2004). Other modes of transmission include aerosolizing procedures in hospital settings and contamination of surfaces in healthcare facilities, households and other closed environments (Kutsar, 2004, para. 12). There has been no confirmation of fecal oral transmission or of transmission via water or food; however, over one third of the earliest cases in China were among food handlers (Kutsar, 2004). Finally, there is a possibility of animal vector transmission, as discussed in regards to the Hong Kong s Amoy Gardens (WHO/DCDSR, 2003). Effect of Outbreak on Community The SARS outbreak caused major effects on the communities affected. Based on the 2003 outbreak, one can assume similar issues would develop should the disease recur. The biggest impact to communities affected would be the strain on the healthcare system. Since SARS is a largely respiratory disease, it can cause very serious problems in the patients infected, requiring ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. The Life and Opinions of Tristam Shandy Essay The term identity is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as blah blah blah . This concept can be viewed as personal and individual to one s self, and is distinguished as an umbrella term to attributes such as; consciousness, heritage, name, appearance, and the soul. As Sterne s novel Tristram Shandy draws influence from John Locke s An Essay of Human Understanding, in which Locke discusses the origin of personal identity, the individual identity is evidently reflected within the text. The novel demonstrates Sterne s interpretation of the personal identity through the construction of each of his unique characterisations. Tristram Shandy discusses the concept and origin of the individuality identity both reflecting and opposing... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sterne can be seen to draw influence from the 18th Century philosopher, John Locke. Locke discusses the theory that individual identity is formed through consciousness and experience, and not upon the soul and body; this may show us wherein personal identity consists: not in the identity of substance, but, as I have said, in the identity of consciousness. (Locke). As Tristram believes the other misfortunate experiences within his childhood amount to his individual identity, this also suggests an origin of identity developed from his personal experiences. He believes that experiencing the many misfortunes such as his accidental naming and castration, disturbance as a homunculus and broken nose reshape his identity and that he is in a sense doomed to live a misfortunate life. In response to reading Tristram Shandy alongside the work of Locke, Heather Keenleyside states that such readings often understand Tristram Shandy as a novelization of Locke s much discussed distinction [...] On this view, Tristram Shandy follows Locke in arguing for the priority of personal identity over the body and its associates: the family and the species, birth and death. (Keenleyside, pg117) The protagonist states that the soul and body are joint sharers in everything they get (Sterne, pg435), composing them as separate but equal quantities of his ... • 42. Ilm Introduction The goal of the Change Management process is to ensure that standardised methods and procedures are used for efficient and prompt handling of all Changes, in order to minimise the impact of Change related Incidents upon service quality, and consequently to improve the day to day operations of the organisation. In this report I have outline EMC s main reasons for implementing the Information lifecycle management (ILM) project, the problems associated with implementing the project and possible ways to overcome these issues. In the main body of the report I will give an account of the years leading up to the implementation of the ILM project. This is an important factor as the industry was in a recession at the time and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before the downturn EMC was capable of making million dollar deals, after the downturn the market for such deals simply did not exist. While certain surveys show IT spending growing, I believe most companies will be extremely cautious in increasing their IT spending during 2003, I do believe there s a bias toward the positive, but no one s willing to commit to increased spending before they see how the year develops. The larger companies in the market where not prepared to make such big deals at that time, so EMC targeted the smaller companies in the market. Two important factors to consider when selecting a target market segment are the attractiveness of the segment and the fit between the segment and the firm s objectives, resources, and capabilities. EMC still expects to invest $1 billion in research and development during 2001, and is investing heavily in its internal information technology infrastructure and looking for areas where it can build talent in several strategic areas. Due to the steps taken above, EMC was perfectly placed to progress in the market. They had built a sold base during the dot com shakeout without neglecting key resources such are R D, this was the best decision made by top management during the shake out years. Although money was tight, top management knew the importance of R D if were to grow into the future. This decision has aided EMC s move to ILM a great deal. I honestly believe the storage ... • 43. Dopamine Research Papers The Functions of Dopamine on the Brain Research Paper Dopamine is mostly referred to as the pleasure chemical. Although this is true, there are many other functions and effects dopamine has on the brain. Dopamine is produced in the dopaminergic neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) of the midbrain, the substantia nigra pars compacta, and the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus (Mandal). It is released to activate and assist the following: movement, memory, pleasure, social functions, attention, and milk production. Dopamine has a huge role in the movement of the human body, assisting it in efficient coordination. These actions occur in the dopamine receptors, D1 5 (Mandal). A part of the braincalled the basal ganglia regulates ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dopamine is commonly associated with the pleasure system of the brain, providing feelings of enjoyment and reinforcement to motivate us to do, or continue to do, certain activities (Dopamine). Animals and humans get these feeling when carrying out natural and necessary tasks. The chemical is released by naturally rewarding experiences such as food, sex, abuse of drugs (like cocaine and amphetamines), and neural stimuli that become associated with them (Dopamine). It s often discussed in terms of drugs and in relation to neurobiological theories of addiction, which argue that these dopamine pathways are pathologically altered in addicted people (Dopamine). If an owner were to reward his or her puppy because it peed on the floor, he or she cannot blame the creature for its bad habits. This is why it is so difficult for addicts to quit. But because humans have a sense of awareness, they are able to control their decisions. Psychoactive drugs are believed to exert their euphoric effects by stimulating dopamine release. Release of the neurotransmitter results in feelings of pleasure and reward and contributes to reinforcement of the behavior that led to dopamine release (Clouse). These drugs are used to treat mental disorders such as schizophrenia or bipolar. However, dopamine is not just the reward chemical , but, as more evidence has shown, it is also released when unpleasant or aversive stimuli are encountered (Dopamine). Drugs that are known to reduce dopamine activity (such as antipsychotics) have proven to reduce desire for pleasure (Dopamine). Many of these drugs are used to treat ... Comparing The Australian And Indonesian Economy Transcript: Comparison of the Australian and Indonesian economy Australian living standards are higher than Indonesia s, this is a result of Australia maintaining higher economic performance through superior economic indicators. Australia s economic indicators reflect a mature and relatively stable economic growth with a population 1/10th of Indonesia s, in comparison, Indonesia s economy reflects a growing developing economy. Indonesia s economic trends are improving at a rapid rate and if this trend continues, Indonesia could have in the mid to long term superior economic growth and thus higher living standards than Australia. In Figure 2 it is evident that Indonesia s cost of living, as reflected by the CPI, has been significantly deteriorating over the last 8 years. Although research argues that CPI may not be an effective indicator of the cost of living for a developing country such as Indonesia (East Asia, 2015). In contrast measuring the percentage of a household budget that goes to food is could be a good indicator. Since 2000, the percentage of household budget spent on food has declined, meaning higher expenditure on discretionary goods and services. This indicates that Indonesia s urban regions are getting richer faster than the impression expressed with the CPI (East Asia, 2015). This is also reflected in figure 1, as the significant increase of mobile phone subscriptions is a good proxy of increased living standards as a mobile phone is a discretionary living cost. This is a result of the Indonesian growth rate earning a higher level of surplus income to spend on more luxury items. Figure 1, Australia s GDP growth (The World Bank, 2016) Figure 2, Australia and Indonesia s GDP and CPI, (The World Bank, 2016) As you can see in figure 2, the Indonesian GDP grew 144% from 2006, in monetary value this equates to $364 Billion to ...
