Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI)
According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2015), urinary tract
infections (UTIs) are among the most prevalent healthcare associated infections with 93,300
healthcare related UTIs diagnosed in 2011. Seventy five percent of healthcare acquired UTIs are
catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI). Because of this, major efforts, including the
creation of preventive guidelines, have been made worldwide to reduce the numbers of these
infections. These guidelines center on using catheters only when they are needed and only for as
long as they are needed. They include specific situations in which catheters should be used which
mostly include operative procedures or medical situations that would require... Show more content

They found that there was solid evidence that antimicrobial catheters are able to prevent or at
least delay development of bacteriuria. This ability however varied greatly depending on
population, catheter type, and other variables. Their review showed less advantage over control
catheters for silver alloy coated catheters in current trials than in earlier trials. The authors
hypothesized the possibility of this effect being due to an exaggeration of the effect of these
catheters in earlier trials because of an advantage of newer silicone catheters over the older latex
catheters which dilutes the effect in later trials. They also hypothesized that catheter care had
improved over time. Another finding was that there seemed to be less of an advantage for silver
alloy coated catheters over controls than for nitrofurazone impregnated catheters. Finally, this
review noted many gaps in the literature such as the lack of comparison between treatment
catheters and the lack of studies looking at symptomatic UTI as a primary outcome variable. These
were recommended as a possibilities for future

Microsoft And A Single Software Program
If you know anything about technology and the biggest companies out there, then you have
definitely heard of Microsoft. Microsoft was founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen, two 19 year
olds, with an idea of a single software program to run an entire computer. This was the main idea
behind Windows operating systems. He had started the company on April 5, 1975 in Albuquerque,
New Mexico with some of his friends. What they didn t know is how huge Microsoftwould grow to
in the tech field. With their control program for microcomputers that went into the IBM personal
computer and with Microsoft Windows they just excelled in the market and became a force to be
reckoned with. Microsoft went public on March 13, 1986 and doing so, the company made... Show

You want employees that are going to want to come to work and be over achievers at everything

their employees and creating a great work environment for their employees to excel in. Microsoft
s official vision statement says, To be led by a globally diverse workforce that consistently
delivers outstanding business results, understands the various cultural demands of a global
marketplace, is passionate about technology and the promise it holds to tap human potential, and
thrives in a corporate culture where inclusive behaviors are valued. (Microsoft) Basically a vision
statement is a declaration of an organization s objectives, ideally based on economic foresight,
intended to guide its internal decision making. When people are seriously looking for jobs a
potential candidate would most likely research the company, see the benefits the company has, and
also their mission and vision statement. As you can tell by their vision statement it seems that
Microsoft wants to attract all different types of talents from all around the world. It is proven that
you will get better results in anything if you diversify your your group ethnically versus if you just

1.Effective Interest Rate on the new 10% debentures = 14.318%
For the 10% debentures, the market value of 1 share is $19.5 (given)
The equivalent of this is a cash offer of $3/share and a 10% subordinated debenture of face value of
$23.
So the PV (10% subordinated debentures with FV $23) = $19.5 $3 = $16.5
The effective interest rate (yield) on the above is that interest rate r that gives the following
PV (Per period payment of ($23*5% i.e. $1.15) over 40 periods @ r)
+ PV ($23 paid 40 periods hence with a return of r)
$16.5
1.15*(1 (1/(1+r)^40))/r + 23/(1+r)^40 = 16.5
Solving for r in the above equation we get 14.318% as the effective interest rate.
Similarly, Effective Interest Rate on the old 5%... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

One time gain = 13,348,000
Additional interest expense for 2 periods = 855.7 +857.3 = $1,713,000
Reduced interest expense for 5% bonds = 863.4 + 870.4 = $1,733,800
New Pre tax Net Income = 551,869 +13,348,000 1,713,000 + $1,733,800 = 13,920,669
After tax Net income = 13,920,669 *(1 0.48) = $7,238,748

The Influence Of Gangs In America
As a reader, I found thi¬¬s book very interesting and very easy to relate to. For me, life was
not easy growing up in Atlanta as a black male, as a child I consistently witnessed situations
similar to what Sudhir Venkatesh experienced such as gang beatings and the selling of illegal
substances. Growing up I moved homes and schools a few times and from this experience I
learned that initially you will not be accepted in a certain community, you have to slowly get
accustomed to the norms before you are welcomed in. Surprisingly the streets are a very
judgmental place, just for being different Venkatesh was called a Mexican and nigger when in fact
he was neither. I can recall numerous circumstances growing up when I was unfairly judged and...

At one point in time Venkatesh himself stated that he was a hustler among hustlers, but unlike the
gang he wasn t hustling narcotics or money he was hustling participants. I seemed to me that
Venkatesh was using the gang members for his personal benefit since he received academic
advancements and praise. While studying communities, confidentiality is very important but in
this research Venkatesh breaks this rule because once he discovered that members of the gang had
other sources of income such as babysitting or prostitution. Venkatesh ends up telling JT and Ms.
Baily about his findings. This was a problem because after finding out about this information JT
and Ms. Baily felt like they were owed more money so they taxed people more money. I didn t like
the way Venkatesh considered himself a hustler among hustlers because while conducting research
you should be straight forward to the participates and tell them exactly what you are researching.
Also, I hated how Venkatesh handled the privacy of the residents of Robert Taylor because many
people ended up losing money that they could have used to support their family. I believe that
everything in an interview should stay between the interviewer and the

bored. Making people watch it and liking it.
Sometimes you have to get up and watch the news. Its not very entertaining to you so you just
get up and do something else. The news we have now tells us how the day is going to be or how
nice it is. The news will be actually fun and really nice if they were to use comedy like Jon Stewart.

would watch the news every morning before school to go to school with a laugh.
The whole reason Jon does this is because he wants to have people talk and say positive thing

Information Based Medicine ( Ebm )
A Health intervention is an effort that promotes behaviour that optimizes mental and physical
health, or discourages or re frames behaviours considered to be potentially health threatening. So,
Evidence based medicine(EBM) is not the only but the best approach to health interventions as it
emphasizes the use of evidence from well designed and conducted research in healthcare decision
making. EBM is regarded as the gold standard of clinical practice. The term evidence based
medicine, as it is currently used, has two main tributaries. Chronologically, the first is the insistence
on explicit evaluation of evidence of effectiveness when issuing clinical practice guidelines and
other population level policies. The second is the introduction of epidemiological methods into
medical education and individual patient level decision making.
Evidence based medicine (EBM) is the process of systematically reviewing, appraising and using
clinical research findings to aid the delivery of optimum clinical care to patients.
EBM is the practice of solving the clinical problems in one s practice by judicious and systematic
use of the medical literature. This includes framing questions rightly and searching the right kind of
literature. Thereafter, the available evidence needs to be evaluated for the validity, strength and
effect size. Finally, the results are examined for applicability to the current problem which requires
a detailed knowledge of the clinical setting, patient

Stereotypes Of A True Hero
Romance heroes, Action heroes, Fiction heroes, Real heroes. They are all around us. Have you
ever actually stopped to think about all the places we can see/find heroes in our daily lives?
Near and far, people are performing courageous acts this second. If we just stopped to realize
these everyday people, we could view the world in such a different light than focusing on the
negative acts of criminals and liars. What is the real question? What is a hero, or who is a hero?
Well, in my eyes, a hero is someone who surrenders more for other people than they do for
themselves. This is shown in actions across the globe and across time.
Throughout time, we as people create stereotypes and guidelines to provide a clear idea what the
normal of something is. So what do we claim a hero is? Look at an easy stereotype in Disney.
Hercules. Truly obvious, I know, but what we are looking at is the most basic stereotype: heroes
are men. Cinderella, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty are all movies titled after their female
characters and yet it is men who are thrust ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Is it possible for us to be heroes in our daily lives? The truth is that each one of us has the ability
to become a hero to someone (Allison). I agree, I think the answer is yes. Every time we declare
choices, we have the possibility to be heroic. Little, simple actions such as making someone
smile when they are in a bad mood. Helping an elderly person up stairs or across the street,
finding fifty dollars and returning it, or even just helping out a struggling classmate can be
viewed as heroic. Giving to other people without expecting anything in return is one more
definition of being heroic. Just because we aren t in the war or in a movie, does not mean we
cannot be heroes in our own lives. We write our own stories and choose our own paths. By
making these decisions to be heroes in our own worlds, we can be just like our favorite characters

Extracurricular Activities And Academic Success
Surveys show that around eighty percent of students participate in extracurricular activities.
Participating in an extracurricular activity involves balance between the activity and academics
while gaining positive impacts. Many people do not see or understand the importance of
extracurricular activities. Critics might argue that extracurricular activities may harm student
academic success, but what they do not realize is the benefits from extracurricular activities. The
following argument started when the question was raised of how students were spending their
leisure time and what they gained from their involvement. After school hours are the peak time for
bad behaviors and crime for students. However, extracurricular activities provide a shelter for
students for fun activities. Extracurricular activities contribute positively to student academic
success by teaching responsibility, time management, and team building skills. Responsibility is a
substantial skill developed from extracurricular activities that impact academic success.
Responsibility promotes students to be held accountable for their actions.
For example, students learn that they cannot always count on their parents. Students learn there
will be times when they have to do things on their own and figure out life by themselves. Parents
are not always going to be there by your side. Thankfully, extracurricular activities allow students to
use responsible skills in and outside of school. Responsibility gives

Francisco Goya
Through his art, Francisco Goya relayed his feelings toward the political unrest that plagued Spain
during his lifetime. As an artist of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Goya lived
through a time of political and social upheaval, especially throughout Europe. At the time, the ideas
of the Enlightenment had captivated the minds of Spains most influential citizens and soon, that of
Goya s. Born in Fuendetodos, Spain, in 1746, Francisco Goyacame from very humble beginnings.

In Winter, peasants trudge through the storm with a slaughtered pig. The bright pink used in the
color of the pig is symbolic of the Rococo style. A fierce wind blows the tree to near breaking,
further communicating the harshness of the weather. Among the colorful scenes that make up this
set, it is undoubtedly in those dedicated to winter that Goya manifests, for the first time in this
cartoon, a social awareness of the everyday reality around him, the same consciousness that would
evolve toward the more extreme and dramatic works characteristic of his maturity. The social
commentary of this painting lead to its rejection by the Royal Tapestry Factory. Francisco Goya s
questioning and irreverent attitude toward life was graphically conveyed in his works. His success
with the Royal Tapestry Workshop brought his artistic talents to the attention of the Spanish
monarchs who would later give him access to the royal court. As court painter (1789), he created
realistic, penetrating portraits of his patrons. Perhaps the most notable portrait painted during this
time, is that of The Family of Charles IV. In this piece, Goya does not emphasize on any particular
member of the family. No significant focus is placed on the king, whom one would assume the
portrait should predominantly be about. He and the queen

I, Robot vs. Frankenstein
In the 19th century Mary Shelley introduced us her first and unique novel Frankenstein. Almost
200 years later director Alex Proyas released his new blockbuster I, Robot based on the
homonymous short story by Isaac Asimov. Both stories tell the viewer a fiction about creatures
produced by human beings. These creatures feel itself as a stranger in the society and
misunderstood. But even if the stories have the same beginning they are presented in a different
way. So the question is: Is the movie I, robotthe Frankensteinof the 21st century?

Few days later Frankenstein s younger brother is found dead. Frankenstein knows right away that
properly the monster has murder his brother. So he goes to look for him. When he finds him, he
noticed that the monster is now able to talk. The creature tells him that he learned to talk when he
watched one family, but when he comes closer to the family and want to be their friend they chase
him away. And so does everybody. He feels so lonesome and alone, that he wants Frankenstein to
create a girlfriend for him so he is no lonely anymore. As a result he may have then somebody to
talk to. In return the monster would turn his back to the human race. Consequently Frankenstein
creates a female mate for the monster, but when he is almost through the work he is suddenly
overwhelmed with fear that the monster and his mate will spawn more monsters and destroy the
human race. So he destroys the female. Thereupon the creature murders Frankenstein s fiancГ©e.
So it is seen that Frankenstein s experience with science and technology to satisfy his curiosity if it
would be possible to animate a dead person scared him. This unites Dr. Lanning and Frankenstein in
some way, because he also wanted to satisfy his curiosity. But there is also a big difference, Lanning
wanted to invent something for humanity, to help them, to fulfill their needs. In contrast
Frankenstein just seems to be curious about figuring out whether it would be possible to animate a

AMBER Alerts are issued after law enforcement determines that there has been abduction. Law
enforcement must believe that the missing child is in danger of harm. An Alert can only be issued
by law enforcement. Abductions by strangers are the most dangerous and are the primary mission
of the Alert. AMBER Alerts are issued for children under the age of seventeen. Each state has its
own age limits, but the majority uses seventeen as the cut off. Descriptive information is given of
the missing child, the abductor, and the abductor s vehicle used in the abduction. The missing child
s name is placed into the National Crisis Information Center (NCIC) system. Not only is the
AMBER Alert named after Amber Hagerman, but AMBER also stands for America s Missing

About 250 to 300 AMBER Alerts are issued each year. To keep up with changing times AMBER
Alerts are moving into the Web network. To be effective, more people need to be reached, and to
do this the Internet is needed. The old system when it was activated could take up to an hour for

Therefore, R D must focus on improvement in output quantity and quality. It must be driven by
the most knowledgeable and experienced human resources in organizations. Given the
fundamental importance of R D in the pharmaceutical sector, it is hardly surprising to note that
the U.S. drug industry spent between $ 30 40 billion each year in the period 1999 2005 towards
funding their respective research operations. Since the early eighties, U. S. industries have
always spent between 15 22% of their sales revenues towards R D activities. Pfizer spends
around $6 billion on R D every year. Successful new drugs (once approved, their manufacturing
costs are usually a small fraction of their price) generate a profuse cash flow which can readily
recover costs of past R D ventures as well as finance fresh ones. Alternative sources of
investment capital from the bond and stock markets are not perfect substitutes for cash flow
financing. Competition is a force that all players of the industry need to contend with and
overcome in order to thrive and develop. With easier access to cutting edge knowledge, capital

Amusing Ourselves To Death By Neil Postman Analysis
Among nerds and Trekkies, Neil Postman s portrayal of the Typographic Mind perhaps sounds very
much like the mind of Mr. Spock. Like the Vulcan Mind, the Typographic Mind, utilizes a logical
and rational method, it is both detached and objective. Imaginably, the Vulcans were a culture
submerged in the printed word. The author paints a picture of the American written word based
culture of the eighteenth and nineteenth century in The Typographic Mind . He calls this the Age
of Exposition in his fourth chapter of his book, Amusing Ourselves to Death. He portrays the
influence on public discourse when based on the written word. It defines the content, the effects on

He describes the act of reading having a sacred element, ritualistic and with a special meaning.
Reading was not casual as today with our abundance of leisure time. Whether by candlelight or the
morning sun, plow in one hand and a book in the other, reading was a serious endeavor with
purpose. Learning to read was the primary purpose of school (p. 61). Hence, the ability to read held
so much importance at the time because as Postman describes, the printed word had a monopoly on
both attention and intellect (p. 60). This print based culture made for a well informed public that
could equally grasp both historical references and complicated political matters of the day (p. 46).
Again, it is the Lincoln Douglas debate, the author highlights that portray this well informed public.
The audience for these deliberations represented an ability to transform the comprehension of
seeing print style long, convoluted, complex sentence to hearing them (p. 45). As the receiver of
messages, this well informed, literate audience of the eighteenth and nineteenth century carried this
skill into many areas of public

Absolute Monarchy In America
Recently, there have been many issues and problems forming in America. The majority of the
complications are the result of the U.S. government, which is a democracy. Another kind of
government that has been around for thousands of years is an absolute monarchy, which is where
one ruler has all the power. It is often debated which system is more effective. A monarch s
authority to govern should be absolute because the interest of the state must come first, there is a
simple law process, and being feared is better than being loved. One reason why a monarch s
authority to govern should be absolute is because the interest of the state must come first. This
means that the nation as a whole is more important than the individual opinions and thoughts of the
citizens. In document number three it says, The more you grant [to the assembled people], the
more it claims... The interest of the state must come first. This quote means that people are greedy
and will take what they are given. If you award them too much freedom, they will take advantage
of it. This would compromise the success of the country. Allowing the citizens to do and take
whatever they want will leave less for the nation. (Document #3)... Show more content on

this does not happen. In document number three it says, The head alone has the right to deliberate

given to them. This means that the only person making the decisions would be the monarch. This

trafficking of said narcotics is the desired course of action (High Level segment Commission on
Narcotic Drugs, 2009). It seems that this course of action became an end of itself instead of a mean
to an end of health and welfare, as mounting evidence shows that the actions taken to achieve this
have not only been ineffective in reducing supply, demand and trafficking; they have also created
severe violations of human rights, alongside criminalization, a hazard to public health, and drug
cartels which pose a very real threat to peace and security.
Member states have not been oblivious to the fact that the measures taken have been
counterproductive, and an increasing number of states are dissatisfied with the results of this
policy (Doward, 2013). Some have addressed this by decriminalizing possession and use of drugs
and introducing harm reduction programs, considering the issue of demand not a criminal issue but
a public health one. The evidence in favor of such programs was acknowledged by international
bodies such as WHO and UNODC, emphasizing that reducing demand should be done through

The Causes Of The 1848 Revolution In Krefeld
The 1848 Revolution
The city of Krefeld (Crefeld) is famous for its textile industry, supplying silk and velvet to many
countries. In Krefeld the silk, velvet and dyeing industries are dominant. The Kramer family is
living here in 1848 when revolution explodes throughout many European cities. This crisis starts
with a major crop failure leading to a famine in 1846 and 1847 that has important and cumulative
effects throughout society. The cost of food rises steeply in Krefeld and in other towns
throughout Europe. It reduces the purchasing power available for other products such as
clothing, driving many businesses into bankruptcy. Textile towns like Krefeld are devastated as
markets collapse and creditors call in their loans. Bankruptcies cause severe pressure on the
banks, some of which suspend activities early in 1848, placing Krefeld s businesses and
thousands of its workers at risk. Adding to the problem is the growing unemployment in Krefeld.
There are bread riots and other forms of violent collective action in cities across Europe. The
economic crisis erodes trust in the government of Prussia. Riots spread throughout the Prussian
cities including Bonn, Berlin and Krefeld. These riots are led by the lower class workers
demanding an end to the high price of food and to their oppressive working conditions. Joining,
and in some cases leading the riots, is the middle class.* The middle class, led by doctors, lawyers
and merchants, are voicing a completely different set of

Social and political critique and commentary in Bonnie and Clyde
The fact that the story is set 35 years ago doesn t mean a thing. It had to be set sometime. But it
was made now and it s about us. Roger Ebert 1
At the time of its release in 1967, Bonnie and Clyde was the subject of intense debate. While the
American film critic Roger Ebert hailed it as a milestone in American moviemaking, Bosley
Crowther, another critic, referred to it as a cheap piece of bald faced slapstick
Comedy . 2 It was called the sleeper hit of the decade, and gained extreme notoriety for its
breakage of traditional cinematic taboos, in that it showed rather explicitly both sex and especially,
raw and brutal violence. It greatly surprised both the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Within this rather traditional framework however, Bonnie and Clyde makes several compelling
statements about 1960 s America. [This is too short to be a paragraph on its own.]
Violence almost defines Bonnie and Clyde. It runs like a silver thread through the entire film.
Graphic violence is today a rather common and somewhat natural characteristic of modern cinema,
but before Bonnie and Clyde, it certainly was not. Arthur Penn introduced it in 1967. Before
Bonnie and Clyde violence in film was hinted at or just implied through various sorts of acting
techniques. Arthur Penn decided to show the audience the real, brutal and raw side to violence,
using brilliant camerawork but more importantly, top notch special effects and masterful visual
skills. In Bonnie and Clyde the violence never feels fake, but terrifyingly real. Take for example
the first graphic scene of the film, in which Clyde shoots a store owner s face clean off, as he
tries jump aboard the robbers getaway car. The man s head basically explodes, splattering blood
and pieces of brain all over the car window, and Penn shows us, the audience, this (although not in a
Tarantinto splasher like way, but nevertheless) in a quite unromantic but very powerful and
dramatic way. The scene is almost reminiscent of the famous scene from Battleship Potemkin 3
where the mother is shot in the face, and her

Why have Starbucks customer satisfaction scores declined? Has the company s service declined,
or is it simply measuring satisfaction the wrong way? Overall, Starbucks customer satisfaction
scores began to decline due to their steps of service and customer centric service in the stores.
Starbucks differentiated itself by providing more beverage choices and allowing the customers to
customize their drinks. However, this worked against them because they were in heavily dense
areas that contributed to longer wait time. Additionally, that led Starbucks customers to believe the
coffee chain was focus on making money and building more stores not customer satisfaction. A
poll of the customers improvements to service, particularly speed of service, was most mentioned.
How Does the Starbucks of 2002 differ from the Starbucks of 1992? In 1992 the company had

How Boys Become Men Essay
How Boys Become Men
The article How Boys Become Men written by Jon Katz, gives a positive statement on how boys
still haven t change and are still growing up the same. Jon Katz, shares with us while walking his
dog one day, he saw a boy get beaten by a group of older boys. While walking towards him, Katz
asked if he was okay; the boy said yes and begun to swing like nothing happened. I believe that
what Jon Katz states is true, because the fact is; boys are always going to think they re the Alpha
Male in every situation. For example: who can climb the highest Rock, who can make a bigger
splash in the pool or who can maybe get a girlfriend first.

Momentarily, they began swimming and Alex ignored the bump on his leg. Boys in my opinion
never want to show they are not up for a challenge. Every time my brother s friends come over,
they always began playing around and see who is the strongest out of all of them. Or from what I
see, they could also began to lift certain objects and see who can throw them the farthest.
Lastly, it s not all about the who can be the better rock climber or who is the strongest, but maybe
who can capture a girls heart first. I have seen this many times from boys who have lost friendships
over the same girl they liked, only because they both wanted to be with her. Sadly, only one gets
the girl. This is were things get really hectic, and boys sometimes become foes, instead of friends.
Boys often get very competitive if they both want the same girl, just like my brother did with his ex
best friend, Joey. Also they never want to admit they lost, sometimes they simply say they didn t try
hard enough.
In conclusion, yes, boys want to be that strong, fearless, awesome guy that they have been taught
mostly by, their parents or society. But just as Jon Katz says, they want love and understanding
when things do not go right for them. Which is very similar how girls are as well. Boys just tend
not to show it, because of the pride they have or what they have gone through in their childhood.
To sum it all up, boys are always going to be the same, but

Essay about The Americanization Of Canada
When the topic of Canada comes up among peoples, immediately the thought of ice hockey, the
Mounted Police, and beavers comes to mind. In fact, Canada has truly lost its true identity that we
once knew. It is slowly being assimilated and in fact Americanized ; in aspects of social identity,
national identity, and cultural identity.
First, Canada is being slowly Americanized ; in its social identity. When we talk about a country s
social identity, we examine a few areas. First is the media, which is constantly bombarding
Canadians with images and values of American culture. Through the images we see Americans
constantly fighting, either in aspects of global policing in their own backyard with Americans
killing Americans. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First thought that comes to most peoples minds is that of the mounted police, beavers, ice hockey,
and wide land mass. In fact, our national identity has been brought about by the American way of
life. This buying spree essentially started when Walt Disney purchased the Mounted Police s
image o it could be displayed in the Ebcot center. The most powerful, stunning uniform is to be
adorned by some no account, flag waving, hillbilly yokel. Another national image wh8ich spans
all three topics of social, natural and cultural is that of Tim Horton s. The one place where we
all go almost every day, has been bought by an American, Dave Thomas. The image of hockey is
distorted as well for there are 28 teams in the NHL, and only 6 of those teams are based in
Canada. That means that Canada only has 21% of what is considered to be a national sport. The
government image is distorted in the Canadians mind as well. All of the American s television
shows and news would have some Canadians believe that our governments work the same, and all
courts operate in the same way as Judge Judy s and the People s Court. In summary, not only are
Canadians loosing the social identity but their national identity as well.
Third, not only is the Americanization of Canada taking place through the social and national
identities, but also through cultural identities. Canada is viewed as a mosaic and not a melting pot

The Fundamental Challenges Of Organizations
Determine the fundamental challenges that organizations face in general in regard to protecting
organizational assets and information. In an article by C. Conner, The 8 Great Challenges Every
Business Faces (And How To Master Them All) in Forbes Magazine (2013), Conner interviewed
her mentor Neal Jenson. Jenson shared his top eight challenges that companies encountered. The
challenges are as follows: 1. Integrity. 2. Cash, Borrowing, and Resource Management. 3. Increased
selection and competition. 4. Marketing and Customer Loyalty. 5. Uncertainty. 6. Regulation. 7.
Problem Solving and Risk Management. 8. Finding the right staff.
Jenson interviewed business executives from diverse industries and organizational size, he stated
that one of their largest challenges that leadership were concerned with was staffing finding the
correct personnel, keeping them, and ensuring they buy into the visual modality of the system.
Having the right staff is important for any organization. With the right staff the company will retain
loyal personnel who will not compromise the integrity of the business.
Small businesses are like a family, they can work well together in harmony, or they can be
dysfunctional. In larger companies, the Human Resources Department deals with the internal
politics as well as locating a candidate that makes a good fit in the organization, but when it comes
to small business, its personalities and skill. In small businesses, team member s

Exploring How Peter Medak Gains the Viewer s Sympathy for Derek Bentley in the Film Let
Him Have It! Peter Medak (Medak) chose to make this film because it had an interesting story
line. Medak might have wanted to prove that the justice system makes mistake and sometimes
those mistakes cannot be fixed, like the mistake or the Derek Bentley (Bentley) and Christopher
Craig (Craig) case, where someone was hanged for a miss interpretation of evidence. Film
directors like Medak use bias as their strong point; it keeps the viewers attention on the movie and
begins to get the viewers to imagine what they would do in the situation. The film is set in the 1950

Craig was more in the blame for killing the officer and should have got death penalty, as he
pulled the trigger. Bentley s life should have been spared as a lot of evidence given was bias and
did not see Bentley s point of view. Bentley was also epileptic and could never think for himself
and always followed someone. Medak gains our sympathy for Derek by basing the movie
around the misfortunes of his life. The opening scene of the blitz during world war II where
Bentley is trapped under rubble, as soon as they lift the rubble of the see Bentley having an
epileptic fit, we already sympathise for Bentley, during this scene Medak zooms in onto Bentley
during the fit and reduces the volume of the background and concentrates on the sound of
Bentley. This opening scene is very effective; at this point Medak has already gained our
sympathy for Bentley as we he is a child who suffers from epilepsy. In our minds we see a
stereotype of a child being innocent. This scene is bias as it features on Bentley only and not on
any other characters so we straightaway feel sorry for him. We see no one else s troubles apart
from Bentley s, he emphasises on Bentley s innocence. This automatically makes you question why
it had to be him and not someone without an illness. During the blitz is not the only time we feel
sorry for Bentley.

Global Business Barriers
Global business is defined as the buying and selling of goods and services by people from different
countries (McWilliams Williams 2010). It also has to do with international trade and trade
agreements. Corporations that own businesses in two or more countries are called multinational
corporations (McWilliams Williams 2010). Most of these global businesses main headquarters are
found in the United States or the United Kingdom. Expanding to a global market is quite a complex
process and businesses have to take many different aspects into account such as: social/cultural,
legal, political, economic, environmental and technological factors. These components help create
an attractive business climate. Different businesses operate differently to assess these relevant
factors. Strict Import export rules and regulations also need to be followed. Entering the global
market also allows for larger competition between other similar businesses and to create trade
agreements. There are many rules and regulations when entering into the global market and with
each country having different requirements you must fulfil. These must be followed or the business
cannot enter into business in that country. Global businesses have trade barriers, which are
government imposed regulations that increase the cost and restrict the number of imported goods
(McWilliams Williams 2010). Different types of trade barriers include tariff and also non tariff
barriers such as: quotas, voluntary

The British constitution has become increasingly codified, discuss.
A constitution is a set of rules that defines the manner a country is run. The British constitution is

Article 6 (Fair Trial), all citizens are to be tried fairly and equally in a court of law, and are
presumed innocent until proven guilty. Article 12 (Marriage and Family), all men and women have
the right to marry and start a family. Another example that could be used is Devolution for
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as much of it has the character of fundamental law, it has
limited the powers of Westminster it contributes to the case that the British constitution has become
more codified in the sense that it is more rigid and hard to change because it is derived through
referendums, defying this means that the government is against the wish of the people.
Another statute that supports that indeed the British constitution is becoming more codified is the
2005 constitutional reform act which separate the judiciary form the executive and legislature by
creating a supreme court court which more adopts the idea of separate powers mostly found n
codified constitutions like the US for example , it also took over the judicial work of the house of
lords, establishing the judicial appointments commission. The prospect of a coalition government in
2010 opens up the discussion even more as it led to the coalition agreement for stability and reform
and called for constitutional clarification by the cabinet secretary, which demonstrates that indeed
the constitution is becoming more codified as

Due to the development of globalisation, a global culture was seen as being formed through the
economic and political domination of the United States which thrust its hegemonic culture into all
parts of the world (Featherstone, 1995, p87). As well as economic change, culture change is
heavily influenced by globalisation. Culture can be generally defined as the way of life of a

The board of directors have a duty of care to keep an organization financially viable, luckily for

The American Foundation For The Blind
Reading is done by a good majority of everyone, most every day. How many words does a person
read in one day? That answer differs person to person. One could be a publisher, book critic,

Blind individuals have Braille script to read, and there also are those that also have technology

eventually results in slack of human. Machines and robots which once are created to reduce human
burden are now slowly being a threat to human by taking over human jobs. Massive amount of
unemployment is credit of the evolving machine. However, human cannot deny the contribution of

Georges Seurat s A Sunday Morning On The Island Of La...
Three weeks ago I visited the Art Institute of Chicago. It was established in 1879 and has since
expanded its collection to approximately three hundred thousand works. Attracting over one and a
half million visitors annually, it is one of the largest art museums in the United States. The reason
I chose this site is that I read that it displayed Georges Seurat s A Sunday Afternoon on the Island
of La Grande Jatte, and I wanted to see it in person because it is so iconic. While at the Art
Institute of Chicago, I spent most of my time in The Elizabeth Hammond Stickney Gallery . There
were three pieces in this gallery: Saint Michael and the Devil, The Birth of Saint John the Baptist,
and Saint George Killing the Dragon. Each piece was made in the Renaissanceperiod in Europe in
the fifteenth to sixteenth centuries. I believe the main reason these pieces are grouped together
is that they all contain a depiction of a saint. Another reason for this arrangement is that all these
paintings all represent the survival of holy figures and the death of the evil ones. This is shown
in each piece by either a saint killing an evil creature or the birth of a holy saint. The piece I will
analyze from the previously mentioned gallery is Saint George Killing the Dragon by Bernat
Martorell which was made in 1434/35. This piece is a painting made on a support of panel with a
media of tempera and stucco. The main subject of the painting is a man wearing armor on a white
horse. The man on the

Criminal Profiling, A Powerful Tool Essay
Criminal profiling can be a rather useful tool for criminal investigators of all kinds. Many
departments use profiling to catch terrorists, gangs, cyber crimes, counter intelligence, white
collar crimes, and most of all serial killers. How criminal profiling works is by looking at the
behavior of the criminal to gain insight into his or her personality. A doctor does the same thing
when looking at symptoms to diagnose a certain disease. Being able to understand this person s
personality leads you one step closer to catching him or her. The history of profiling starts as early
as the 1800s. Criminal profiling is what it is today because of the contributions of those
investigators of that time. The first documented case that profiling... Show more content on

There were no clear signs of forced entry which means the suspect had been in the house before
and knew his way around. The time that the kidnappers said they would call came and went,
which should have been a big clue that something was wrong. The house was then completely
searched and in the basement the body of JonBenet was found. JonBenet s body was found with
her hands over her head with a cord, along with a cord around her neck. She was covered up with
a white blanket with duct tape on her mouth. The fact that she was covered means that the suspect
felt some kind of remorse for what they did. It could have been someone that JonBenet knew.
Now the autopsy confirmed how she was murdered. It was confirmed that she died by
strangulation along with blunt force trauma to the head and some trauma to the vaginal tissue.
Drawing from the information on the autopsy we may conclude that someone brought JonBenet
down to the basement to sexually assault her and took it too far. The suspect may have gotten
angry with her which is why there was bruising on her face and neck. Once she was dead the
suspect may have freaked out and decided to make a ransom note and hide the body to cover up
the crime. Now there was a lot of other evidence that was gathered at the scene of the crime along
with examples of both parents handwriting to compare to the ransom note. Then we look at the
victim s life. JonBenet was homeschooled but did participate in pageants which put

The Original Venus Sculpture
Thirdly, the sculpture is very accessible; the empty space around the sculpture provides students
an opportunity to go closer and explore the sculpture in more detail. The space behind the
sculpture allows walking around to view the sculpture from different angles. It is clear to recognize
the sculpture as Venus from the front side, however, when standing really close to the backside or
the side face of the sculpture, the image of Venus is really vague. since the carving is not very in
detailed at those faces. As a result, rather than being regarded as Venus, the sculpture can be seen
as anything. The sculpture then could be interpreted in a million ways with imagination. Moreover,
the creator s name: Jim Dine, the sculptor, and the year of it was created are engraved on a very

that the beauty is not that easy to achieve. One has to experience difficulties and endure distress

The complete return to the international capital markets was a remarkable achievement and a big
turning point, and in May 18, 2014 Prime Minister Passos Coelho officially announced Portugal s
fully exit from a three year bailout programme, regaining its financial and economic autonomy and
control. Portugal was the second Eurozone country, after Ireland in December 2013, to leave an

Between the period 2011 and 2104, it is estimated that more than 485.000 workers emigrated, the
highest number in more than five decades, being most of them young and highly qualified, such as
doctors, nurses, and scientists. These negative impacts on the Portuguese growth led to a growing
political and popular hostility to austerity. Many believed that all of the austerity measures only led
to unemployment, job insecurity, and consequently poverty. Under those circumstances, the future
of the European project became under scrutiny and many began to question if Portugal should leave
the euro and the European Union. One person who questioned that, was 2001 Nobel Prize in
Economics, Joseph Stiglitz. The US economist and Columbia University Professor advised
Portugal to leave the euro and in an interview with Portugal s Antena 1 radio station on 05 Sep,

Reminders Of Poverty Soon Forgotten Summary
Alexander Keyssar s
Reminders of Poverty, Soon Forgotten
Amanda Collier
ENG/215
September 3, 2012
Bruce Massis
In this writing the classical principles of argumentation Ethos, Pathos, and Logos will be
observed as it is used in Reminders of Poverty, Soon Forgotten by Alexander Keyssar. These
arguments are used to persuade the reader to think that the writer s ideas are the best ideas. Before
going into whether or not Keyssar used these principles in his writing, it is important to understand
what each of the three principles mean. In the principle of Ethos, or ethical appeal, it is used to
persuade the audience or reader of the authors creditability. The Merriam Webster dictionary
describes Ethos ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Keyssar used words such as poverty, and race to appeal to the reader s emotions. Saying that the
victims of Katrina had to endure things such as rape and violent treatments in the shelters made
them look like outsiders in their own country. An example of Ethos was used when Keyssar
argued that Americans mainly ignored the reality of the poor in New Orleans; with our land of
SUVS and hedge funds there is powerful news footage and major news magazines (such as the
New York Times). He is making the reader believe in his credibility because people believe in such
sources, as they are considered very credible. Logos principle is applied by discussing the FEMA
(Federal Emergency Management Agency) and their inability to respond effectively to the people
after the storm. Keyssar says that unlike the disasters, poverty is not technical and should be
approached comprehensively. This played on people s reasoning and logic. As a historian, Keyssar
has taught and written about poverty in the United States. He is highly respected because of his
expertise. When he writes about the

Amelia Earhart was a Woman Who Rocked the Nation.
Amelia Earhart was a remarkable woman, whose works beniffited this country greatly. Her
courage emerged during a time when women were still supposed to be timid will forever be
spoken with respect and honor by every american. Her records will forever be remembered and
her flights will contine to be admired for uncoutable gentorations. Her speeches that spoke of a
independant female unopposed to opposition and unafriad of adventure or danger influanced
women to take a far larger role in scociety. She not only flew planes but she also worked as a
nurse for wounded soldiers, and as a social worker for female imigrants, until one unfortunet July
morning. She gave us the face of a true hero, someone with not only bravary but also selflessness.
To begin, Ameila came from a rough but somehow fitting background. She moved around
frequently, and never had much money. Also, Her father was a alchoholic, and so her parents
deivorced shortly after her graduating high school. (Magill, Frank N., Christina J. Moose, Alison
Aves, and Steve Seddon. Dictionary of World Biography. A Gi ed. Vol. 7. Chicago: Salem, 1998.
Print. 20th Century. ) Since primarily her mother took care of the family throughout her life, it was
clear why she was so self reliant. Adding to that, though they were in a time where most women
were quiet and obidient, her parents believed that women should have the same oppertunities of
men. Ameila took this modern belief and grabbed it by the horns. She decided to do

Wagner needed to find an opera and sponsor, skilled enough and wealthy enough, to perform his
opera the second obstacle Wagner needed to conquer, which was nearly impossible due to the fact
that no opera wanted to premiere Tristan und Isolde because of its eccentricity. The lengthy time
period it took for the operato be produced took a toll on the pre conceived notions of the magnitude
of the grandeur of its premiere. The initial city which was chosen to perform Tristan und Isoldewas
in Vienna, Austria, where it took 77 rehearsals at the Hofoper in Vienna in 1863 before the
orchestra declared it unplayable. Through the word of mouth of the music community, which was
promoting the idea that the opera was not fit to be played, and the fact

The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe Essay
The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe s The Pit and the pendulum
demonstrate an arabesque look at the human mind. Part of the terror of The Pit and the Pendulum
stems from the apocalyptic imagery with which Poe establishes his narrative framework. The
narrator of the tale seems not to parallel the characters of Poe s other tales, in that he is very sane
and his torture comes from without rather than from within. Poe has used apocalyptic imagery in
many of his works (Spealght 235). Condemned to torture and death by the black robed, white
lipped judges of the Inquisition in the opening scene of the tale, the narrator observes seven
candles, which first dissolve in his mind into seven angels wearing... Show more content on

Fittingly, then, Poe concludes his tale with blaring trumpets, fiery walls, and a thousand
thunders , apocalyptic images that describe the narrator s deliverance by General LaSalle as a
sort of Second Coming of Christ. Indeed, removed from its allusive context, the narrator s rescue
is difficult to account for since, as David H. Hirsch has pointed out, it is neither foreshadowed in
the tale nor congruent with its overwhelming Beard The Pit and the Pendulum 3oppression.
However, in light of Revelation 16.15 Behold, I come as a thief the narrator as well as the reader
accepts the unexpectedness of LaSalle s and the narrator s escape. Commentators have of course,
recognized Poe s allusions to Revelation and several apocryphal books of the Bible. Hirsch
observes that the final paragraphs of the tale neatly counterpoint the first by reversing the narrator s
loss of hearing, and then collapse with auditory amplification and expansion. According to Hirsch,
the dreamy indeterminate hum of the opening lines is caught up in the discordant hum of the
conclusion; the burr of a mill wheel is amplified into the thousand thunders, and the collapsing
image of the blackness of darkness supervened is inverted into the expanding image of the fiery
walls rushing outward . Hirsch suggests, moreover, that the outstretched arm of

  • 2. Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI) According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2015), urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most prevalent healthcare associated infections with 93,300 healthcare related UTIs diagnosed in 2011. Seventy five percent of healthcare acquired UTIs are catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI). Because of this, major efforts, including the creation of preventive guidelines, have been made worldwide to reduce the numbers of these infections. These guidelines center on using catheters only when they are needed and only for as long as they are needed. They include specific situations in which catheters should be used which mostly include operative procedures or medical situations that would require... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They found that there was solid evidence that antimicrobial catheters are able to prevent or at least delay development of bacteriuria. This ability however varied greatly depending on population, catheter type, and other variables. Their review showed less advantage over control catheters for silver alloy coated catheters in current trials than in earlier trials. The authors hypothesized the possibility of this effect being due to an exaggeration of the effect of these catheters in earlier trials because of an advantage of newer silicone catheters over the older latex catheters which dilutes the effect in later trials. They also hypothesized that catheter care had improved over time. Another finding was that there seemed to be less of an advantage for silver alloy coated catheters over controls than for nitrofurazone impregnated catheters. Finally, this review noted many gaps in the literature such as the lack of comparison between treatment catheters and the lack of studies looking at symptomatic UTI as a primary outcome variable. These were recommended as a possibilities for future ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Mgm Harvard Business School Accounting Case 1.Effective Interest Rate on the new 10% debentures = 14.318% For the 10% debentures, the market value of 1 share is $19.5 (given) The equivalent of this is a cash offer of $3/share and a 10% subordinated debenture of face value of $23. So the PV (10% subordinated debentures with FV $23) = $19.5 $3 = $16.5 The effective interest rate (yield) on the above is that interest rate r that gives the following PV (Per period payment of ($23*5% i.e. $1.15) over 40 periods @ r) + PV ($23 paid 40 periods hence with a return of r) $16.5 1.15*(1 (1/(1+r)^40))/r + 23/(1+r)^40 = 16.5 Solving for r in the above equation we get 14.318% as the effective interest rate. For me, life was not easy growing up in Atlanta as a black male, as a child I consistently witnessed situations similar to what Sudhir Venkatesh experienced such as gang beatings and the selling of illegal substances. Growing up I moved homes and schools a few times and from this experience I learned that initially you will not be accepted in a certain community, you have to slowly get accustomed to the norms before you are welcomed in. While studying communities, confidentiality is very important but in this research Venkatesh breaks this rule because once he discovered that members of the gang had other sources of income such as babysitting or prostitution. Venkatesh ends up telling JT and Ms. Baily about his findings. This was a problem because after finding out about this information JT and Ms. Baily felt like they were owed more money so they taxed people more money. I didn t like the way Venkatesh considered himself a hustler among hustlers because while conducting research you should be straight forward to the participates and tell them exactly what you are researching. • 9. Information Based Medicine ( Ebm ) A Health intervention is an effort that promotes behaviour that optimizes mental and physical health, or discourages or re frames behaviours considered to be potentially health threatening. So, Evidence based medicine(EBM) is not the only but the best approach to health interventions as it emphasizes the use of evidence from well designed and conducted research in healthcare decision making. EBM is regarded as the gold standard of clinical practice. The term evidence based medicine, as it is currently used, has two main tributaries. Chronologically, the first is the insistence on explicit evaluation of evidence of effectiveness when issuing clinical practice guidelines and other population level policies. The second is the introduction of epidemiological methods into medical education and individual patient level decision making. Evidence based medicine (EBM) is the process of systematically reviewing, appraising and using clinical research findings to aid the delivery of optimum clinical care to patients. EBM is the practice of solving the clinical problems in one s practice by judicious and systematic use of the medical literature. This includes framing questions rightly and searching the right kind of literature. Thereafter, the available evidence needs to be evaluated for the validity, strength and effect size. Finally, the results are examined for applicability to the current problem which requires a detailed knowledge of the clinical setting, patient ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Stereotypes Of A True Hero Romance heroes, Action heroes, Fiction heroes, Real heroes. They are all around us. Have you ever actually stopped to think about all the places we can see/find heroes in our daily lives? Near and far, people are performing courageous acts this second. If we just stopped to realize these everyday people, we could view the world in such a different light than focusing on the negative acts of criminals and liars. What is the real question? What is a hero, or who is a hero? Well, in my eyes, a hero is someone who surrenders more for other people than they do for themselves. This is shown in actions across the globe and across time. Throughout time, we as people create stereotypes and guidelines to provide a clear idea what the normal of something is. So what do we claim a hero is? Look at an easy stereotype in Disney. Hercules. Truly obvious, I know, but what we are looking at is the most basic stereotype: heroes are men. Helping an elderly person up stairs or across the street, finding fifty dollars and returning it, or even just helping out a struggling classmate can be viewed as heroic. Giving to other people without expecting anything in return is one more definition of being heroic. • 11. Extracurricular Activities And Academic Success Surveys show that around eighty percent of students participate in extracurricular activities. Participating in an extracurricular activity involves balance between the activity and academics while gaining positive impacts. Many people do not see or understand the importance of extracurricular activities. Critics might argue that extracurricular activities may harm student academic success, but what they do not realize is the benefits from extracurricular activities. The following argument started when the question was raised of how students were spending their leisure time and what they gained from their involvement. After school hours are the peak time for bad behaviors and crime for students. However, extracurricular activities provide a shelter for students for fun activities. Extracurricular activities contribute positively to student academic success by teaching responsibility, time management, and team building skills. Responsibility is a substantial skill developed from extracurricular activities that impact academic success. Responsibility promotes students to be held accountable for their actions. For example, students learn that they cannot always count on their parents. Students learn there will be times when they have to do things on their own and figure out life by themselves. Parents are not always going to be there by your side. Thankfully, extracurricular activities allow students to use responsible skills in and outside of school. Responsibility gives ... The bright pink used in the color of the pig is symbolic of the Rococo style. A fierce wind blows the tree to near breaking, further communicating the harshness of the weather. Among the colorful scenes that make up this set, it is undoubtedly in those dedicated to winter that Goya manifests, for the first time in this cartoon, a social awareness of the everyday reality around him, the same consciousness that would evolve toward the more extreme and dramatic works characteristic of his maturity. The social commentary of this painting lead to its rejection by the Royal Tapestry Factory. Francisco Goya s questioning and irreverent attitude toward life was graphically conveyed in his works. His success with the Royal Tapestry Workshop brought his artistic talents to the attention of the Spanish monarchs who would later give him access to the royal court. As court painter (1789), he created realistic, penetrating portraits of his patrons. Perhaps the most notable portrait painted during this time, is that of The Family of Charles IV. In this piece, Goya does not emphasize on any particular member of the family. No significant focus is placed on the king, whom one would assume the portrait should predominantly be about. Seventy five percent of abductions are committed by males. Sixty seven percent of these perpetrators are under the age of twenty nine. Seventy four percent of children abducted are girls. Seventy one percent of the kidnappers are strangers to the victims. Eighty percent of abductions occur within a quarter of a mile from where the child lives. AMBER Alerts are issued after law enforcement determines that there has been abduction. Law enforcement must believe that the missing child is in danger of harm. An Alert can only be issued by law enforcement. Abductions by strangers are the most dangerous and are the primary mission of the Alert. AMBER Alerts are issued for children under the age of seventeen. Each state has its own age limits, but the majority uses seventeen as the cut off. Descriptive information is given of the missing child, the abductor, and the abductor s vehicle used in the abduction. The missing child s name is placed into the National Crisis Information Center (NCIC) system. Not only is the AMBER Alert named after Amber Hagerman, but AMBER also stands for America s Missing Broadcast Emergency Response (Child Abduction, AMBER Alert, and Crime Control Theater). About 250 to 300 AMBER Alerts are issued each year. To keep up with changing times AMBER Alerts are moving into the Web network. Like the Vulcan Mind, the Typographic Mind, utilizes a logical and rational method, it is both detached and objective. Imaginably, the Vulcans were a culture submerged in the printed word. The author paints a picture of the American written word based culture of the eighteenth and nineteenth century in The Typographic Mind . He describes the act of reading having a sacred element, ritualistic and with a special meaning. Reading was not casual as today with our abundance of leisure time. Whether by candlelight or the morning sun, plow in one hand and a book in the other, reading was a serious endeavor with purpose. Learning to read was the primary purpose of school (p. 61). Hence, the ability to read held so much importance at the time because as Postman describes, the printed word had a monopoly on both attention and intellect (p. 60). This print based culture made for a well informed public that could equally grasp both historical references and complicated political matters of the day (p. 46). Again, it is the Lincoln Douglas debate, the author highlights that portray this well informed public. The majority of the complications are the result of the U.S. government, which is a democracy. Another kind of government that has been around for thousands of years is an absolute monarchy, which is where one ruler has all the power. It is often debated which system is more effective. A monarch s authority to govern should be absolute because the interest of the state must come first, there is a simple law process, and being feared is better than being loved. One reason why a monarch s authority to govern should be absolute is because the interest of the state must come first. This means that the nation as a whole is more important than the individual opinions and thoughts of the citizens. • 20. Global Drug Policy The global policy on drugs has one main concern, as maintained in the first clause of the 1961 UN Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs: promoting the health and welfare of mankind (United Nations, 1961). The convention and global drug policy actors have asserted through the years that drugs pose a threat to this concern, and so an integrated effort to reduce supply, demand and trafficking of said narcotics is the desired course of action (High Level segment Commission on Narcotic Drugs, 2009). It seems that this course of action became an end of itself instead of a mean to an end of health and welfare, as mounting evidence shows that the actions taken to achieve this have not only been ineffective in reducing supply, demand and trafficking; they have also created severe violations of human rights, alongside criminalization, a hazard to public health, and drug cartels which pose a very real threat to peace and security. Member states have not been oblivious to the fact that the measures taken have been counterproductive, and an increasing number of states are dissatisfied with the results of this policy (Doward, 2013). Some have addressed this by decriminalizing possession and use of drugs and introducing harm reduction programs, considering the issue of demand not a criminal issue but a public health one. In Krefeld the silk, velvet and dyeing industries are dominant. The Kramer family is living here in 1848 when revolution explodes throughout many European cities. This crisis starts with a major crop failure leading to a famine in 1846 and 1847 that has important and cumulative effects throughout society. The cost of food rises steeply in Krefeld and in other towns throughout Europe. It reduces the purchasing power available for other products such as clothing, driving many businesses into bankruptcy. Textile towns like Krefeld are devastated as markets collapse and creditors call in their loans. Bankruptcies cause severe pressure on the banks, some of which suspend activities early in 1848, placing Krefeld s businesses and thousands of its workers at risk. Adding to the problem is the growing unemployment in Krefeld. There are bread riots and other forms of violent collective action in cities across Europe. The economic crisis erodes trust in the government of Prussia. Riots spread throughout the Prussian cities including Bonn, Berlin and Krefeld. These riots are led by the lower class workers demanding an end to the high price of food and to their oppressive working conditions. [This is too short to be a paragraph on its own.] Violence almost defines Bonnie and Clyde. It runs like a silver thread through the entire film. Graphic violence is today a rather common and somewhat natural characteristic of modern cinema, but before Bonnie and Clyde, it certainly was not. Arthur Penn introduced it in 1967. Before Bonnie and Clyde violence in film was hinted at or just implied through various sorts of acting techniques. Arthur Penn decided to show the audience the real, brutal and raw side to violence, using brilliant camerawork but more importantly, top notch special effects and masterful visual skills. In Bonnie and Clyde the violence never feels fake, but terrifyingly real. Take for example the first graphic scene of the film, in which Clyde shoots a store owner s face clean off, as he tries jump aboard the robbers getaway car. Lastly, it s not all about the who can be the better rock climber or who is the strongest, but maybe who can capture a girls heart first. I have seen this many times from boys who have lost friendships over the same girl they liked, only because they both wanted to be with her. Sadly, only one gets the girl. These numbers look great and the percentage allocated to program expenses is especially significant for allowing the Center to hire more staff and increase its capacity. Thanks to the board s oversight and guidance, the Center now has over a hundred employees that serve in eight different programs. Despite the boards managerial capability and diverse skillsets, they do have one weakness representation. One issue with a self perpetuating board is that ... the board may come to be unrepresentative of the constituency or community the organization serves, (Worth, 77). The Center s mission is to protect all diversity. To do so requires a diverse board and staff, yet the board s demographics do not match that of the staff or its constituents. One could be a publisher, book critic, reading for a living; or one could be a plumber or carpenter and still do some instructional reading, but much less than the aforementioned occupations. Readingis an essential skill in our daily lives. Blind individuals have Braille script to read, and there also are those that also have technology able read aloud to them. Night after night, lavish drinking parties ensued in which Alexander and Hephaestion, (his supposed alter ego) undoubtedly participated in. It was during this time of extravagant celebration that Hephaestion became ill and contracted a high fever. Hephaestion s physician Glaucias put him on a strict diet and monitored his health. • 40. Georges Seurat s A Sunday Morning On The Island Of La... Three weeks ago I visited the Art Institute of Chicago. It was established in 1879 and has since expanded its collection to approximately three hundred thousand works. Attracting over one and a half million visitors annually, it is one of the largest art museums in the United States. The reason I chose this site is that I read that it displayed Georges Seurat s A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, and I wanted to see it in person because it is so iconic. While at the Art Institute of Chicago, I spent most of my time in The Elizabeth Hammond Stickney Gallery . There were three pieces in this gallery: Saint Michael and the Devil, The Birth of Saint John the Baptist, and Saint George Killing the Dragon. Each piece was made in the Renaissanceperiod in Europe in the fifteenth to sixteenth centuries. I believe the main reason these pieces are grouped together is that they all contain a depiction of a saint. Another reason for this arrangement is that all these paintings all represent the survival of holy figures and the death of the evil ones. This is shown in each piece by either a saint killing an evil creature or the birth of a holy saint. The piece I will analyze from the previously mentioned gallery is Saint George Killing the Dragon by Bernat Martorell which was made in 1434/35. This piece is a painting made on a support of panel with a media of tempera and stucco. The main subject of the painting is a man wearing armor on a white horse. The man on the ... A doctor does the same thing when looking at symptoms to diagnose a certain disease. Being able to understand this person s personality leads you one step closer to catching him or her. She was covered up with a white blanket with duct tape on her mouth. The fact that she was covered means that the suspect felt some kind of remorse for what they did. It could have been someone that JonBenet knew. Now the autopsy confirmed how she was murdered. It was confirmed that she died by strangulation along with blunt force trauma to the head and some trauma to the vaginal tissue. Drawing from the information on the autopsy we may conclude that someone brought JonBenet down to the basement to sexually assault her and took it too far. The suspect may have gotten angry with her which is why there was bruising on her face and neck. Once she was dead the suspect may have freaked out and decided to make a ransom note and hide the body to cover up the crime. These arguments are used to persuade the reader to think that the writer s ideas are the best ideas. Before going into whether or not Keyssar used these principles in his writing, it is important to understand what each of the three principles mean. Saying that the victims of Katrina had to endure things such as rape and violent treatments in the shelters made them look like outsiders in their own country. He is making the reader believe in his credibility because people believe in such sources, as they are considered very credible. Logos principle is applied by discussing the FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) and their inability to respond effectively to the people after the storm. Part of the terror of The Pit and the Pendulum stems from the apocalyptic imagery with which Poe establishes his narrative framework. The narrator of the tale seems not to parallel the characters of Poe s other tales, in that he is very sane and his torture comes from without rather than from within. Poe has used apocalyptic imagery in many of his works (Spealght 235). Condemned to torture and death by the black robed, white lipped judges of the Inquisition in the opening scene of the tale, the narrator observes seven candles, which first dissolve in his mind into seven angels wearing... Fittingly, then, Poe concludes his tale with blaring trumpets, fiery walls, and a thousand thunders , apocalyptic images that describe the narrator s deliverance by General LaSalle as a sort of Second Coming of Christ. Indeed, removed from its allusive context, the narrator s rescue is difficult to account for since, as David H. Hirsch has pointed out, it is neither foreshadowed in the tale nor congruent with its overwhelming Beard The Pit and the Pendulum 3oppression. However, in light of Revelation 16.15 Behold, I come as a thief the narrator as well as the reader accepts the unexpectedness of LaSalle s and the narrator s escape. Commentators have of course, recognized Poe s allusions to Revelation and several apocryphal books of the Bible. Hirsch observes that the final paragraphs of the tale neatly counterpoint the first by reversing the narrator s loss of hearing, and then collapse with auditory amplification and expansion. According to Hirsch, the dreamy indeterminate hum of the opening lines is caught up in the discordant hum of the conclusion; the burr of a mill wheel is amplified into the thousand thunders, and the collapsing image of the blackness of darkness supervened is inverted into the expanding image of the fiery walls rushing outward . Hirsch suggests, moreover, that the outstretched arm of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
