Global drug use increased from 2006 to 2017 with 29.2 million annual opiate users and 53.3 million annual opioid users in 2017. The number of people with drug use disorders also rose to 35 million in 2017 from 30.5 million previously. New data led to increases in some regional estimates, such as annual opiate users in Asia rising from 11.2 million to 21.7 million. While some countries saw declines in certain drug use measures, injecting drug use and HIV rates among people who inject drugs remained issues according to long-term trend data from 1992-2017. Prisons also struggle with drug use and new psychoactive substances continue to emerge globally with over 700 identified between 2005-2018.

The methodology used spatial and temporal modeling of 2818 data sources to estimate smoking rates by age, gender, year and location. CDC researchers see link between opioid misuse, binge drinking.
A study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine today finds that more than 2 million Americans who misused opioids between 2012 and 2014 also identified as binge drinkers. Overall, binge drinkers had nearly twice the odds of misusing opioids compared to non-drinkers.
The finding alarmed researchers, who noted that one in five prescription opioid deaths in recent years also involved alcohol. "Combining alcohol and opioids can significantly increase the risk of overdoses and deaths," CDC Director Robert Redfield said in a statement.

Summary of the policy
The opioid crisis has been a significant public health concern in the United States since the late 1990s. The inability to develop strategic legislation and regulation to control the use of opioid has been critical to the development of the opioid crisis. The opioid crisis involves the use of both prescription and non-prescription opioid drugs. According to the Center for Disease control and prevention, the rate of opioid addiction has been significantly increasing over the years. From 1999 to 2016, at least 350,000 individuals have died from related opioid addiction, which includes prescription and illicit opioids.
Unlicensed pharmacies and overdependence on these drugs in pain management have been major concepts, which have created a challenging setting where the abuse of prescription drugs can be controlled. The underlying basis of this problem is the current assumption in the United States that medical practitioners can cure almost everything. Even though it is essential to understand that prescription drugs are effective in pain management, the drugs are required to be offered based on the prescriptions issued (McDonald & Lambert, 2016). It is also noted that they should not be used regularly since they created a very detrimental habit to patient wellbeing because they have addictive properties, which make it dangerous when consumed in large portions.
Confronting opioid addiction requires significant efforts by all stakeholders in healthcare in ensuring that there is a common objective in providing that there is a crucial focus in integrating quality focus in preventing opioid addiction. Considering the fact that a prescribed drug mainly propagates opioid addiction. It is essential to ensure that they are issued through consideration of critical healthcare knowledge regarding the admissibility of opioid drugs (Bihel, 2016). Nurses have a significant role to play regarding the overall development of the opioid addiction crisis. Critical issues that have been identified in opioid drug abuse include improper use, lack of the required knowledge and related interpretation in the use of opioid prescribed drugs and decreased regulation and legislation from the government regarding the existing concern on the increasing addiction levels across the country.

This study evaluated changes in youth alcohol and marijuana consumption and perceptions after legalizing recreational marijuana use in Washington and Colorado. The study found that after legalization, college students perceived marijuana as slightly less risky but used at similar rates by others. Students also perceived greater marijuana accessibility. For consumption, infrequent marijuana users increased alcohol use most, while frequent users initially decreased but then increased alcohol use. The findings suggest legalization is linked to modest changes in youth perceptions of marijuana norms and increases in both alcohol and marijuana consumption over time.

Across countries, similar policies are already being implemented to rein in spending on expensive therapies, increase the use of generics,
address pricing directly through price cuts or indirectly via discounts or rebates, and develop a market for biosimilars as a lower-cost
alternative to original biologics.
Alternatively, the fast growing pharmerging markets will be driven predominantly by economic gains and rising incomes. This rise in
incomes, particularly for the lowest earners, coupled with government commitments to support expanded access to basic healthcare services,
will make medicines more broadly available and affordable to millions of people.
Further, new therapies for a range of diseases affecting both developed and developing world populations are currently, or will soon become,
available transforming patient care. Despite this progress, however, significant gaps remain in the drug arsenal.
In this report we quantify these factors and examine the spending and usage of medicines globally through 2016. We intend this report to
provide a foundation for meaningful discussion about the value, cost and role of medicines in healthcare over the next five years. Our report
was developed as a public service without industry or government funding.

The methodology used spatial and temporal modeling of 2818 data sources to estimate smoking rates by age, gender, year and location. Thirty-eight health outcomes were analyzed to calculate smoking-attributable deaths and disability. CDC researchers see link between opioid misuse, binge drinking.
A study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine today finds that more than 2 million Americans who misused opioids between 2012 and 2014 also identified as binge drinkers. Overall, binge drinkers had nearly twice the odds of misusing opioids compared to non-drinkers.
The finding alarmed researchers, who noted that one in five prescription opioid deaths in recent years also involved alcohol. "Combining alcohol and opioids can significantly increase the risk of overdoses and deaths," CDC Director Robert Redfield said in a statement.

Summary of the policy
The opioid crisis has been a significant public health concern in the United States since the late 1990s. The inability to develop strategic legislation and regulation to control the use of opioid has been critical to the development of the opioid crisis. The opioid crisis involves the use of both prescription and non-prescription opioid drugs. According to the Center for Disease control and prevention, the rate of opioid addiction has been significantly increasing over the years. From 1999 to 2016, at least 350,000 individuals have died from related opioid addiction, which includes prescription and illicit opioids.
Unlicensed pharmacies and overdependence on these drugs in pain management have been major concepts, which have created a challenging setting where the abuse of prescription drugs can be controlled. The underlying basis of this problem is the current assumption in the United States that medical practitioners can cure almost everything. Even though it is essential to understand that prescription drugs are effective in pain management, the drugs are required to be offered based on the prescriptions issued (McDonald & Lambert, 2016). It is also noted that they should not be used regularly since they created a very detrimental habit to patient wellbeing because they have addictive properties, which make it dangerous when consumed in large portions.
Confronting opioid addiction requires significant efforts by all stakeholders in healthcare in ensuring that there is a common objective in providing that there is a crucial focus in integrating quality focus in preventing opioid addiction. Considering the fact that a prescribed drug mainly propagates opioid addiction. It is essential to ensure that they are issued through consideration of critical healthcare knowledge regarding the admissibility of opioid drugs (Bihel, 2016). Nurses have a significant role to play regarding the overall development of the opioid addiction crisis. Critical issues that have been identified in opioid drug abuse include improper use, lack of the required knowledge and related interpretation in the use of opioid prescribed drugs and decreased regulation and legislation from the government regarding the existing concern on the increasing addiction levels across the country.

This study evaluated changes in youth alcohol and marijuana consumption and perceptions after legalizing recreational marijuana use in Washington and Colorado. The study found that after legalization, college students perceived marijuana as slightly less risky but used at similar rates by others. Students also perceived greater marijuana accessibility. For consumption, infrequent marijuana users increased alcohol use most, while frequent users initially decreased but then increased alcohol use. The findings suggest legalization is linked to modest changes in youth perceptions of marijuana norms and increases in both alcohol and marijuana consumption over time.

IMS Global Pharma Outlook 2016

Across countries, similar policies are already being implemented to rein in spending on expensive therapies, increase the use of generics,
address pricing directly through price cuts or indirectly via discounts or rebates, and develop a market for biosimilars as a lower-cost
alternative to original biologics.
Alternatively, the fast growing pharmerging markets will be driven predominantly by economic gains and rising incomes. This rise in
incomes, particularly for the lowest earners, coupled with government commitments to support expanded access to basic healthcare services,
will make medicines more broadly available and affordable to millions of people.
Further, new therapies for a range of diseases affecting both developed and developing world populations are currently, or will soon become,
available transforming patient care. Despite this progress, however, significant gaps remain in the drug arsenal.
In this report we quantify these factors and examine the spending and usage of medicines globally through 2016. We intend this report to
provide a foundation for meaningful discussion about the value, cost and role of medicines in healthcare over the next five years. Our report
was developed as a public service without industry or government funding.

Emphysema is a disease condition of respiratory system.
Emphysema is an abnormal permanent enlargement of the air spaces distal to terminal bronchioles, accompanied by destruction of their walls and without obvious fibrosis.
Emphysema of lung is defined as hyper inflation of the lung ais spaces due to obstruction of non respiratory bronchioles as due to loss of elasticity of alveoli.
It is a type of chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease.
