The purpose of this research study was to name the degree of modulating influence of the type of
surface used stabile or labile on the mechanics of the abdominal wall. Recent interest in stability
training for lower back injuries has brought attention the utilization of labile, or movable, surfaces
which challenge the motor control system. Studies have shown that the abdominal muscles play an
extremely important role in maintaining optimal spine stability. The study was enacted primarily
because there is very little known about the modulating effects of these types of surfaces on muscle
activity. In order for physical therapists to incorporate rehabilitative exercises of this nature into
patient treatment plans, it is clinically necessary for the effects of using labile surfaces in stability
exercises to be fully understood.
