Essay On Mass Media

Allyson Wells
INTRODUCTION Mass Media reaches a large part of our audiences today, whether it be from the
movies, advertising, the internet, newspapers, magazines, twitter, you tube, Instagram, Facebook and
so forth and because of this it can affect how we think and believe, both personally and as a society.
Today, I will address three specific areas that product mass media channels have been used and has
made a difference, either to me personally, or in society in general.
A biography of D. W. Griffith, film director of The Birth of a Nation. The channel of mass media is
PBS or specifically, American Masters.

So yes, it did, and still can shape and change, the part of our society that has turned against such
hatred. These days, it only needs a spark.
The second choice is Empire a television series that plays weekly. The product mass media channel is,
twitter, Facebook, and Instagram and that is due to people wanting to be a part of the action. Because
the networks are creating more shows where you can use your DVR viewing, this can mean the
difference between 100 episodes to 10 for social media.
1. In what way did your example shape, change, or reinforce your own cultural values?
This was a change in my cultural values, Empire has a lot of sexual issues in their episodes and It
doesn t portray who or what I stand for, therefore it made me feel like I must explain myself, or
express my values. If you read some of the responses on twitter and face book, it can get nasty and
yet, not all responses are bad, it s just the language they can use on these channels.
2. In what ways do you think they shape, change, or reinforce the cultural values of our society in
general.
It s obvious that it has changed how society use to be. When there wasn t anyone of these outlets,
society tried to watch what they said, and how they said it, but now, when you have a channel where
you can freely express and show your other side, it has become a welcome mat for a group in society
that doesn t see the wrong in what they say or do.
The third choice is Dancing with the Stars, a show that comes

Essay The Color Purple
The Color Purple by Alice Walker is a very controversial novel, which many people found to be very
offensive. It is basically the struggle for one woman s independence. The main character in The Color
Purple is Celie a coloured woman with little or no education at all. She is one who has been used and
abused by all the men in her life, and because of these men, she has very little courage or ambition in
her life. She has so little courage, that all she wants to do is just survive. Through the various women
she meets throughout here life like: Shug, her sister, and Harpo s wife, she learns how to enjoy herself,
gain courage and happiness. She finally learns enough and with the final straw she could no longer

Shug Avery is not only a friend to Celie but also a lover. It is by being a lover that Celie learns self
respect and a little happiness in her life. Like when Shug Avery showed Celie how to enjoy herself.
Listen she say, right down there in your ... is a little button that gits real hot when you do you know
what with somebody. It get hotter and hotter and then it melt. That the good part. But other parts good
too, she say... (P. 79). I found this real important as it showed Celie she can enjoy herself and there is
more to her then just being a slave to Mister. Another important woman in Celie s life was Harpo s
wife Sofia. Sofia wasn t as important to Celie as Shug Avery or her sister Nettie, but it was Sofia s
actions that I believe helped inspire Celie. For when Harpo tried to beat Sofia, thanks to Celie s advice
to Harpo to beat his wife, Sofia would always fight back. Not only emotionally but physically as well,
for one day when Celie was going to Harpo s house she saw Harpo and Sofia fighting like twos mens
(P. 44). And I think Celie was really shocked when Sofia confronted her on why Celie told Harpo to
beat Sofia. I say it cause I m a fool, I say it cause I m jealous of you. I say it cause you do what I can t.
What that? She say. Fight I say. ... She say all my life I had to fight. I had to fight my daddy. I had to

Luther Cressman Motoc War Analysis
The first video was all about Luther Cressman and his life achievements as an archeologist. Cressman
was born in 1897, in rural Pennsylvania, where his family taught him to value education and to always
have integrity. He graduated college in 1918, and then went on to join the military, although he was
never called out. When he got out of the military he went to Graduate school at Columbia, where he
met his first wife Margaret Mead. Mead went on to become a very successful anthropologist. They
divorced in 1925; Cressman left ministry to become a college professor. He remarried to Celia Lock
and had a baby girl. In 1929 his family moved to Oregon, where he was a professor at the University
of Oregon. In 1930, a farmer discovered uncovered Indian burial grounds in Golden Hill and asked
Cressman to come check it out. This is where he started doubting the original theories and believing
that humans were here longer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was a war between the Native American and the white settlers. The war took place near Klamath
County by the Oregon and California border. One of the big players in this war was Ben Wright; he
made the decision to execute as many Modoc people as possible. He led them in to the Native
Americans village, waving a white peace flag and then turned around, shooting at them. This resulted
in the deaths of thirty Native Americans. This was not the only time the peace flag was misused during
the war; the Native Americans also returned the favor. The lava field were used as protection, the lave
tubes were used as trenches and the caves provided shelter. The Native Americans went through a lot
during this time from the war to having their reservations taken away and being moved to different
reservations. The Modoc s put up quiet a fight but in the end they surrendered. On October 3rd, 1873
four of the Modoc s were executed for their involvement in the

The Moral Responsibilities Within A Corporation
Corporations can be large or small but they all have some sort of ethical impact on their employees,
shareholders, customers, community, and surrounding environments. Richard DeGeorge writes, We
can speak of corporations having moral responsibilities to act in certain ways, and they are morally
responsible for the consequences of their actions on people. (p. 200). Large corporations are
comprised of the board of directors, management, and their workers. They also deal with suppliers,
customers, and have competitors. This essay will examine the moral responsibilities within a
corporation.
In large corporations the success or failure of the company is the responsibility of the board of
directors. According to Richard DeGeorge, The members of the board are responsible to the
shareholders for the selection of honest, effective managers, and especially for the selection for the
CEO and of the president of the corporation. (p. 202). The board members have a moral responsibility
to ensure the corporation is run honestly, in respect to its major policies, and to ensure the interests of
the shareholders are satisfied. The next responsibility within a corporation is the responsibility
management has to its board of directors. DeGeorge writes, It must inform the board of its actions, the
decisions it makes or the decisions to be made, the financial condition of the firm, its successes and
failures, and the like. (p. 202). The management of the corporation is morally obligated to

Bandura s Theory Of Observational Learning
The Social Learning theory (modelling) is a set of principles that some psychologists have put into
place to establish how each childs personality grows and develops through their individual
behavioural patterns, that they have aquired through the progress of their lives. It is important that
children not only learn through conditioning, but its just as important that they have equal amounts of
observational learning.
Observational Learning is less stressful to children and does nt take as much effort, all children need
to do is observe. A child will self conciously grow and extend their abilities by observational learning.
Observing fellow peers and adults in their lives will merely encourage a child to mimick and model a
person s behaviour. Any childs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Non direct reinforcement comes from observational or vicarious learning. Some children are clever,
and they learn from peers just by watching that certain actions not only have good outcomes, but some
can come with not so good consequences. A psychologist called Bandura annd some of his fellow
collegues have proven through different studies the efficiency of the Observational Learning, and that
its the best theory for those children with complex and difficult beehavioural issues. In one study they
expose a child to a (model) subject who s behaviour is of a certain manner, they then record how much
they copy the subject and their reactions. There was an experiment done where a nursery child was

Being Ranked The Second Strongest Alien
I can remember it like it was just yesterday. My Father the strongest alien on planet Jungle, had left
the safety of our house in order to deal with a civilization of aliens, outside of our door steps, intent on
taking him down for his authority and power, the group had a power that overshadowed all others
within the race. This left me in charge for the remainder of the time, to protect those I see unfit to fight
for themselves in our household, if my father was defeated. I quite honestly believed being ranked the
second strongest alien; I had a horrible fate due to the struggles that accompanied the position. My
thoughts trailed off once more, regained as the scouter I was equipped with on the side of my head

Visual Aesthetics
Part One: Visual Aesthetics Essay The work of art I chose is a sculpture by Antonio Raggi which is
located in the church of Santi Domenico e Sisto, in Rome. I think it gives meaning to the story by
giving you a physical work that expresses all of the thoughts and emotions the characters are feeling.
The piece shows Mary on her knees in front of Jesus desperately reaching towards him, probably to
prove to herself that he is really there in front of her, while Jesus seems to be gesturing with his
outstretched hand do not touch me . The first thing that I was drawn to when I first layer eyes upon the
paining was the hand of Jesus, which seems to me to be the most important part in the sculpture. My

Mary is talking with a man she assumes is a gardener asking him questions, instead of answering he
speaks her name, causing Mary to instantly recognize who she thought was a gardener as instead
being Jesus. Why did Mary not recognize him until she heard his voice? This is because, according to
Nancy because she believes that which she hears. Some other characters in the story put their faith in
what they saw, the disciple John sees an empty tomb and based on what he sees is able to believe that
Jesus has risen from the dead. However, Mary Magdalene could not place her faith in what she saw
like others could. When she saw the empty tomb with the discarded bandages she still didn t believe
that Jesus could be alive, and even when Jesus himself was standing before her she was still unable to
believe. What triggered Mary to come to the understanding that Jesus was alive was not sight, but
sound. When she heard his voice she instantly knew that it was him before her and not the gardener
she had believed him to be. After she knew it was him she called out to Jesus to show him that she
believed. She used her voice to show him that she has believed based on that which she can hear.

Adorno And Horkheimer s Essay
Whilst putting Adorno and Horkheimer s essay, The Culture Industry and Benjamin s Work of Art in
the Age of Mechanical Reproduction into conversation, a debate had been sparked regarding the issue
of artistic individualism and uniqueness. Although, Adorno, Horkheimer, and Benjamin all seem to
agree that the aura of art is rapidly declining in today s modern age, they seem to differ in classifying
the reason behind it. The aura refers to the one timeness of the experience of a certain object, which
can be possessed only by the original work of art itself, and therefore cannot be reproduced. In
essence, the aura is the one timeness of the experience, the situation in which the subject meets the
object that cannot be reproduced. For

Case Study on Sears Essay
SEARS CASE STUDY by Robert A.G. Monks and Nell Minow Introduction The great advantage of
publicly held companies is that they bring together capital and managerial expertise, to the benefit of
both groups. An investor need not know anything about making or marketing chairs in order to invest
in a chair factory. A gifted producer or seller of chairs need not have capital in order to start a
business. When it runs well, both profit, and the capitalist system achieves its goals. Our system of
capitalism has been less successful when the company does not run well. As some of America s most

In a survey of business leaders, Sears management was ranked 487 out of 500.3 It was no secret that
the company s performance was poor, both in comparison to the market as a whole and in comparison
to its peers. But all of that was not enough to get management to change direction. What could the
shareholders do? They could sell out, as many of them did, even at a loss, but as noted above that does
not force the company to improve. Those whose stake was big enough to merit some attempt at
communicating with management tried that, too, but with little success. Sears s twelve largest
investors met with CEO Ed Brennan and retail chief Michael Bozic in August of 1990. Brennen and
Bozic gave an upbeat assessment of the corporation s plans. But the investors wanted more than rosey
projections. They cited a grim share performance value had dropped 15 points since 1989 and gave
Brennan one year to achieve marked improvement in retail, or to look for another job. Brennan fired
Bozic, and promised to make cuts. But it was too little, too late, and the shareholders were not
satisfied. In early December, the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), holder
of 2.2 million shares, voiced its concern about Sears s performance, citing depressed stock and the
failure of retailing strategies. CalPERS message, says CEO Dale Hanson, was simple: From 1984 on,
Sears went to hell

What Was The Impact Of Women In The Civil War
Civil War was a harsh time for many peoples families and all the people fighting. The war started
April 12, 1861 to April 13, 1865, it lasted four years and a day, which in that time period many
soldiers were wounded and killed in battle. Within the time period of four years and one day about
620,000 soldiers died in this war which means it was a horrific fight within the time it was going on.
The Civil War had a big impact on america and the people in it, especially women. Women in the
Civil War played a big part in it. Many women dressed like men to fight in the war to show not all

Families almost died and people tried to run and left everything behind. Many people wanted to help
fight but ran to protect their children from dying within the war, although the reason they want to stay
was because of the adrenaline they had rushing through their systems at the time making them want to
fight. Everyone had a moment were their flight or fight instinct kicked in, most people choose flight,
but some out of the group stayed to fight, but at the risk of getting killed and their children possibly
dying as well just to protect their home. Most people wondered if the war was ever gonna end, at
times people thought about giving up the war just to see their families again, but through all the pain
and misery the Civil War brought everyone kept battling on to win and to free slaves no matter the
risks they had to take. Though many women helped by doing laundry, and dishes for the food, and
cooked for soldiers, women played a bigger role in the Civil War more than people realize. Women

The Sandlot Analysis
The Sandlot : A little field never meant so much
Have you ever wondered what it would be like living as a teenager in the 1960s? Even though filmed
in 1993, The Sandlot does an outstanding job taking you back to the summer of 1963. It takes you
back in time to 1963 to a simple town in Utah. The Sandlot follows a timid young kid through hard
times, like moving to a new town and having to go through the struggle of finding new friends. The
struggle comes to an end when a compassionate young man comes up to him and gives him a life
changing opportunity. The Sandlot wonderfully depicts a unbreakable bond between a superstar
athlete and an introvert. The characters and actors honestly makes The Sandlot become a classic. The
setting and the plot really make you feel as if you were a teenager in 1960s time. The Sandlot consists
of the essentials of a memorable classic such as connections with audiences, a perfect setting,
tremendous characters, and an intriguing plot.
The Sandlot provides many opportunistic connections with the viewers to make it a memorable movie.
For example, The Sandlot starts off with a struggle many kids face today, with Smalls , a timid young
man moving to an unknown town in Utah. In the beginning of his adventure Smalls is faced with the

Speech About Smoking
It s not surprising that in this world you see at least one person a day smoking. I mean who doesn t
love watching people rush to get lung cancer? Seeing one person just taking their life away with
something so stoppable, is so adorable, I mean what other qualities would you look for in a man? I
like mine fully addicted and ready to waste their life away. It s the best religion that I must say so
myself. In fact, I like that people rely on something like religion to lead them to the way they want to
live their life. I personally believe in the smokies. The smokinese are a group of people that worship
nicotine. Id honestly love to be apart of that. I mean I love the smell of it in the air, the feeling of
polluted air. Nothing gets better than that. In reality smoking is the only relief to take away pain these
days. I mean what other reason would people put something so horrible into their body if it didn t
relieve any type of stress or good feeling. I live for the day to see everyone to have lung cancer and
killing themselves for just being vulnerable about stress relief. I mean people preach smoking
nowadays. People wanna go back to the way of smoking in a restaurant and people recommend it, it s
a religion that s being created without anyone understanding. As the smokinese people believe that the
only way to live a happy and stress free life is to become addicted to smoking, they sure are right. I

Summary Of Exposure To Violent Crime
Furthermore, evidence as been shown that an individual being exposed to a violent crime within a
specific time period of an assessment ensures them a lower mark. Sharkey, Schwartz, Ellen, Lacoe
(2014) affirm, Black students who are exposed to violent crime in the week prior to the exam are 2.8
percentage points less likely to pass the exam than black students exposed to violent crime in the week
following the exam, (p. 211). This exposure to crime and lower grades does not diminish with time.
An assumption can be formulated that an exposure over time can perhaps make an individual immune
to some the issues. However, this is assumption is mistaken in that there is know decline in the

Anion Of An Aldol Reaction In Which An Enolate Ion Formed By
An aldol reaction is an addition reaction in which an aldehyde or ketone is attacked by an enolate ion
of the same compound (Klein, 2015), but can also be an enolate ion of another compound. The enolate
ion formed is due to an anion coming in to deprotonate the alpha carbon of a carbonyl compound
(Klein, 2015). The general result of an aldol addition is always a β hydroxy aldehyde or ketone, but
can also undergo condensation as it sometimes loses a small molecule or water or an alcohol group
which will produce a different product altogether. This reaction can also serve as a chain elongation as
it forms a new C C bond (Mayo, Pike, Forbes, 2015). The hypothesis for this aldol reaction was to
yield dibenzalacetone, a bright yellow precipitate, with a 1:2 molar ration of acetone and
benzaldehyde (Handayani Arty, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the stepwise mechanism, as shown in figure 1, an enolate is formed in the acetone compound when
a hydroxide ion deprotonates its alpha carbon due to benzaldehyde s absence of an alpha carbon with
any available protons. The carbon anion then proceeds to attack the carbonyl carbon on the
benzaldehyde carbon, which then results in a chain elongation as well as the oxygen receiving its lone
pair of electrons causing an instability issue. The oxygen then attacks a water molecule, taking a
hydrogen atom to produce an alcohol group. This is the general condition of a simple aldol reaction
(Klein, 2015). However, another hydroxide ion deprotonates the alpha carbon which is centered
between the alcohol and carbonyl groups, creating another

Spolia In Ancient Rome
Reuse, reduce, recycle a slogan coined in our era of attempting to reduce waste captures the zeitgeist
of the late Roman antiquity in the form of the radical and controversial practice of spolia. The growing
presence of spolia the practice of reusing remains from ruined buildings in the urban landscape of late
classical Rome derived from the decline of ancient Rome in the 3rd century. This practice continued
through the Middle Ages, with a more apparent presence in the twelfth century, and then declined
during Italian Renaissance when artistic practice was crucial to the resurgence of classical tradition.

First and foremost, the aesthetics of spolia were greatly desired. Spolia would have been crafted
during the Roman antiquity, a period in which Rome culturally flourished. After the decline and
eventual fall of Rome, the work produced and displayed during the antiquity was seen to be the key to
re establish the greatness of Rome. During the crisis of supply in the 3rd century, it was impossible for
Rome to source the materials needed for their lavish and ambitious constructions. Spolia, although
controversial and deemed unfavourable at the time, provided a solution to the problematic situation.
Roman column displays exist only to be seen and without such columns, buildings would be seen to
have had little classical stature; they highlighted not only the advanced expertise of Rome but also
placed Rome as the leader of classical culture. Bases and capitals were aesthetic symbols of the period
of transition. Guidelines for aesthetic colonnades were created by Vitruvius, the Roman author, who
organised them into three groupings (Doric, Ionic and Corinthian) which would portray a certain

Modernism In The Odyssey, By James Joyce
Modernism Ezra Pound, a prominent modernist writer, succinctly encapsulated the modernist
movement with his exclamation, Make it new! Modernism rejected the tradition and artistic confines
of the Victorian Period, though one clear start and end of the movement proves hard to define. The
lack of requirements needed for a work to receive classification as modernist contributes to disputes
about the origin and ending of the movement. Modernist artists, especially writers, had great influence
on the artists and art that succeeded them in subsequent eras of art. Modernism remains one of the
most important eras within art, because of it reaffirms of the possibilities of human creativity by

However, without the systems of art in the past, modernism might not have become so revolutionary.
The era s allowance of total freedom of creativity made it all the more unique from the restrictive
standards of art in the movements of the past. Throughout the late nineteenth century and the first half
of the twentieth century, modernist works found their collective identity in the lack of similarity
among the many works within the movement, contrasting with the works of the past, which deviated
from other in only certain details, while retaining the aspects deemed necessary. James Joyce, a
landmark modernist, proved this true by defying the typical structured a short story and single

When I Heard The Learn D Astronomer By Walt Whitman Analysis
Freedom Is Not Free What is freedom? Is there a specific meaning to the word? Could the meaning be
different for everyone? There is of course the obvious answer, where you might say that freedom is the
essence of not being controlled by anyone. In the same way, you could reply by saying that freedom is
having the ability to make your own choices. Both answers are correct in their own way. However, it
could also be described in a very different manner if you were to ask Walt Whitman. A common theme
is a lot of Whitman s poetry is freedom; he observed the world around him, and had his own ideas of
the true meaning of freedom. The definition of freedom may be simple to most people, but the true
meaning is very deep, personal, and specific; it can never be explained, only experienced. ... Show

In this poem, the speaker is listening to a lecture from a very well educated astronomer. As the
astronomer is explaining the stars and planets on charts and diagrams, the speaker observes from the
crowd. The crowd was truly enjoying the lecture: When I sitting heard the astronomer where he
lectured with much applause in the lecture room. (Whitman). However, the speaker felt as if he were
in prison; he was not enjoying the lecture at all. The speaker leaves the room, and goes outside to look
up at the night sky. In this moment, he is in nature gazing at the stars, and he observes them for
himself. This is an example of freedom; in this moment where he is alone in nature experiencing the
beauty of it, he is truly

Data And Information On Health Information Management
The terms data and information are often used interchangeably, however, with health information
management, there are differences. Health information begins with data which are items, observations
or raw facts. Data, when collected, does not necessarily have to be understood by the person gathering
it. It is simply a collection of facts (Davis Lacour, 2014, p. 33). In order to understand the various data
that is collected it must be organized. The goal in doing this is to provide information. Data refers to
the units of observation while information is data that has been organized, making it useful (Davis
Lacour, 2014, p. 34). When a patient is hospitalized, if his/her temperature is taken and simply listed
in a vertical line that information is useless to anyone who looks at the list. There is nothing that
explains what the numbers represent, let alone help a provider with patient care. When organized with
dates and times, along with the appropriate notation of Fahrenheit or Celsius, the data becomes
information and important in the provider s treatment of the patient. Health data is not only used by
medical providers. It is also used by facility administrators, lawyers, payers, and government agencies.
Facility administrators use data to plan strategically regarding what types of services they will offer.
Lawyers use health data to show the type and extent of injuries suffered by their clients. Payers, like

Disease Paper
Today, there are many diseases people have to deal with. Some of them are treatable and some of them
are permanent. One of the visible autoimmune diseases is vitiligo. Vitiligo occurs when melanocytes
die or stop producing the pigment that gives a skin, hair, and eye color. When people have vitiligo the
skin becomes whiter, and it usually occurs on skin on both sides of the body. The exact trigger is not
known, but it relates to the immune system to attack, destroy the melanin forming cells because of the
family history, sunburn, stress, or exposure to chemicals. It can happen at any age, but usually occurs
before the age 20.
In the article For Vitiligo Patient, Arthritis Drug Restores Skin Color from June 24, 2015 says that a ...

The side effect is dry skin, rash, or itching. In addition, there are ointments that contain tacrolimus or
pimecrolimus, which are used on small areas. There are also a treatment that is used as a combination
medication and light therapy. The patient will need to take in or apply medication called psoralen.
After that, the patient exposed to ultraviolet A or UVA light. The skin turns pink and more normal skin
color started to appear. It takes six to 12 months. The risk is that the skin might have bad sunburn,
blistering, itching, over darkening, or risk of skin cancer. Another option is surgery, which is done by
removing a small section of the skin and moving it to affected areas. This procedure called skin
grafting. Lastly, the tattooing is used, when a doctor uses a surgical instrument to implant pigment in
the skin. The negative part is that it is quite difficult to match the skin color, and tattoos tend to fade
with time. Sometimes this technique causes more vitiligo patches.
In conclusion, whether to treat vitiligo or leave it untreated, it is each every person s decision. In today
s world with many resources available there is no exact cure for this autoimmune disease, which is
really sad. I think that it is not a very popular topic since people are not going to die and it is not a
disease, which will affect others if to become in contact. The main things that people should do are use

The Positive Effects Of Violence And Violence In Video Games
Henry Jenkins states that the worst thing a kid can say about homework is that it is too hard. The worst
thing a kid can say about a video game is that it is too easy, meaning the harder the game, the better
the experience. The Psychological group reports that more than 90% of children in the U.S. play video
games. Among the kids between the ages of 12 and 17, the number rises to 97%. Eighty five percent
or more of video games on the market contain violence. CBS says that within reviewing more than
150 research papers, the task force found a consistent relationship between the games and the increase
in aggressive behavior. August 12, 2013 Adam Lanza shot 26 people in Newtown, Connecticut at
Sandy Hook Elementary school. Investigators went looking around at addresses in Adams GPS to find
out that he went to a theatre quit often and found out that he went to a theatre and played one specific
arcade game every time he showed up. A few times the manager had to unplug the game just to have
him leave the theatre before closing. Violent video games are active while watching tv is passive.
People learn better when they are actively involved. Players of violent games are more likely to
identify with a violent character. Violent games directly reward violent behavior such as by awarding
points or by allowing players to advance to the next games level. In some games, players are rewarded
through verbal praise such as hearing the words Nice Shot! after killing the enemy. It is well known
that rewarding behavior increases its frequency. The video game industry is the fourth largest
entertainment industry in the world. Many as 97% of U.S. kids age 12 17 play video games,
contributing to the $21.53 billion domestic video game industry. More than half of the 50 top selling
video games contain violence. In 2008 video game sales peaked with almost 300 million units being
sold. Of that amount 28% were rated teen by ESRB (entertainment software rating board) and five
percent rated mature. In 2004, teen related games made up 33% of all games manufactured and
produced while mature rated made up 12%. By 2007 teen rated made up only 20% and mature made
up six percent. While the numbers of violent video

Second Hand Smoke
Do people know second hand smoke not only affects the person smoking, but it also affects the people

The Valley Of Ashes In The Great Gatsby
Rich versus poor, the difference is clear. The valley of ashes is a gloomful, lifeless place where the
poor are left exhausted and looking for something higher to believe in. The rich live on the Eggs, old
money on the East island and new money on the West island. People from old money are from British
descent and do not need to work to live their luxurious lifestyles. People with new money are from
German or Irish descent and are typically political or theatrical people. Wealthy persons live a
colorful, exciting life without stress or need of a higher power. F. Scott Fitzgerald utilizes the valley of
ashes to symbolize how the time and energy spent by the rich, both new and old money, neglect the
poor in his novel The Great Gatsby.
The valley of ashes is a pit of despair compared to the areas in which the prosperous reside. The valley
is a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens; where
ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and, finally, with a transcendent effort,
of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air (Page 23). In this case,
Fitzgerald uses lifeful imagery to describe the spiritless atmosphere in the valley of ashes. The
liveliness in the imagery is ironic because of the depressing setting it forms. His description of the
people as barely keeping it together helps set the mood of misery. Additionally, the valley is described
by Nick as a solemn dumping ground (Page

Grapes Of Wrath By John Steinbeck
Have you ever realized that John Steinbeck talked about Religion in his book Grapes of Wrath? Well,
if your answer is NO, let me inform you that Steinbeck did talk about Religion in his book. There are
many similarities in John Steinbeck s Grapes of Wrath and Christ s story. In The Grapes of Wrath,
Steinbeck presents religion in different ways ranging from Jim Casy s similarities to Christ, the use of
Christian theology, and the symbolism of some characters as pastors. Throughout his book, Steinbeck
recounts the great depression era and its effects on proletariats. The major theme throughout this book
is the role of Christianity in the society. Marxism is a better theoretical lens to utilize for this paper
because the book itself contains several Marxist key terms. By applying the Marxist theory on
Steinbeck s book Grapes of Wrath, we can better understand how he uses Christian theology to
advance his critiques of capitalism.
Marxism is a literary theory that was developed by Karl Marx and his colleague Friedrich Engels.
According to Karl Marx, human history is made of physical things as well as a variety of struggles
between social classes: the lower class (oppressed) and the middle class (oppressing). There are two
most common and important key terms used in the Marxist theory: bourgeoisie, which often refers to
the middle class; those who own business or have a better life and proletariat, which refers to lower or

Characteristics Of Chinese Legal System For Ngos
Introduction
Over the past 66 years since 1949, China has been through a unique development and economic
growth patterns. Particularly, during the opening up reform era in 1978, China restructured the
planned economy into the market economy to temporize the process of globalization (Gunter Rosen,
2012). The rapid development of economics and opening policy environment incubate the
increasingly presence of social groups (Gunter Rosen, 2012;Yin, 2009). But still, compared with other
Western countries, China is in the early stage of exploring and formalizing civil society and NGOs
(Qi, 2011). Currently, the global influences and the power of China cannot be ignored. Scholars and
practitioners hold positive attitudes toward China s role in contributing to global development. Based
on the structure of assessment tools (International Center for Not for Profit Law, 2014), this memo
will briefly introduce the general legal system of civil groups in China.
The Unique Characteristics of Chinese Legal System for NGOs
Legal Environment o The democracy reform of China promotes the civic engagement and social
service delivery (Yin, 2009). With the development of social economic development, Chinese
government takes advantage of multiple instruments with citizen oriented and effective driven ideas to
engage civil society organizations in the government supported social service delivery (Qi, 2011). But

Genetic Engineering And The Canadian Regulation
Biotechnology is the application of scientific techniques and exploitation of biological processes used
to improve and modify animals, plants and microorganisms to enhance their value through genetic
manipulation. Over time, advances in the field of molecular biology has allowed scientists to take a
particular gene from any organism, including, bacteria, viruses, plants or animals, and introduce those
genes into another organism. An organism transformed using genetic engineering techniques is known
as transgenic organism (Independent learning center, 2012). This paper discusses the positive and
negative effects of genetically engineered organisms in agricultural applications and the Canadian
regulation or legislation that relates to this issue.
Many farmers in Canada have welcomed major crop plants produced by genetic engineering. Four
major transgenic crops including canola, corn, soy and sugar beet have been approved for commercial
production in Canada (Canada Agency, 2015). Transgenic organisms offer a range of benefits in the
agricultural applications. Over many years, transgenic organisms have helped increase crop
productivity by introducing drought tolerance and disease resistance to crops. Today, scientist has
been able to select genes for disease resistant from other organism and relocate them to essential
crops. For example, in the 1980, researchers from University of Hawaii teamed up with Cornell
University to develop a papaya cultivar resistant to papaya

Reflection About Apathy
Students line the patterned red seats in the high school auditorium. While the speaker on stage bellows
his gospel of forgiveness, some students halfheartedly nod along, some stare at their shoes, and some
snore. Looking around the chapel from my seat in the back row, I am overwhelmed with one
impression: apathy. This mood that hung in the room was pervasive, making me feel uncomfortable
because I realized that I felt it too. While I usually enjoy learning for its own sake, apathy has not
escaped me. Not only does this mindset manifest in my school s chapel services, but also in the
classroom. When students do not care about learning, they either put in the least amount of effort
possible or resort to rote memorization to maintain their grade. Instead of understanding the material,
they glean little knowledge that they can apply to their lives, making education relatively pointless.
This thoughtlessness maddens me because I want to be purposeful in everything that I do. During my
junior year of high school, apathetic students and teachers led me to rediscover the power I have over
my own education. In my physics class, I was miserable: I did not learn I memorized. Although my
teacher had good intentions and a passion for the subject, he taught us terms and formulas, skirting
around fundamentals such as how these concepts connected to each other. Work equals the applied

Rescuer Persuasive Essay
Every good citizen makes his country s honor his own, and cherishes it not only as precious but as

Yes, I think rescuers should rescue people even at risk. First, because it s their job, they get paid for
that. Second, because if they don t rescue people in need who will. Lastly, it s their duty, we need
heros and rescuers with brilliant machines to help those in need.
Rescuers are heros alive or dead but the fact they must accept is that people smart or dumb will climb

Improving the Records Management
Improving the Records Management
Implementation of Electronic Records Management Records management can be improved in many
ways. In my opinion, one of the ways is to implement the electronic records management. The
government should consider formulating policies, standards and practices, technical specifications and
training plans to enable its agencies including Mahkamah Negeri Sembilan to manage records in
electronic form. According to Arkib Negara Malaysia, The management of electronic records is not a
problem that needs to be solved. Its effective implementation in support of program/ service delivery,
decision making, etc., should be viewed from the perspective of the extent to which it can lead to cost
savings, cost avoidance, risk reduction and opportunity gain. This means that electronic records could
give a lot of benefits to the government agencies. As stated by Arkib Negara Malaysia, electronic
records management could help the government agencies to reduce its costs. The traditional records
management practiced by Mahkamah Negeri Sembilan for example requires the government to
actually spend more money. This is because, if we re looking this issue from a strategic view then it is
undeniable that the implementation of electronic records management could save costs. The existing
system practiced by the government requires them to maintain all the equipments and also hire
personnel to supervise the files room. Furthermore, it contributes to the increased usage

The Character Of Diana In The New Woman
George Meredith s 1885 Diana of the Crossways accounts the charming and witty titular heroine
through her miserable marriage and the subsequent fallout. Although Diana is based on polemicist
Caroline Norton s own disastrous marriage and divorce scandal, Meredith s protagonist borders
between New Woman themes and Victorian feminine ideals, as Diana does not damningly deviates
from the latter. In this essay, I will explore how Meredith has rendered the character of Diana palatable
for upper and middle class Victorian readers by comparing her to her real life counterpart, to Thomas
Hardy s portrayal of the New Woman and his issues with publication and how Meredith s
characterization has created an archetypical character thereby allowing for critical and commercial
success. The New Woman was a feminist ideal used to describe an independent, educated, and self
reliant woman who typically would push the limits of the male dominated society. While Meredith has
come to be remembered as a friend to women s plight for his sympathetic depiction of women in his
novels, he has taken certain liberties to convey Diana as digestible as possible to his audience rather
than realistically or particularly liberated. In a time in which women were expected to get married not
that marriage was meant to satisfy their emotional or sexual needs Caroline Norton is often described
as being pushed into marriage to George Norton. Caroline Norton and her sisters had come to be
known as the Graces , an allusion to the Greek goddesses of charm, beauty, and human creativity, for
their own beauty and accomplishments. For this, George Norton was willing to accept her without a
dowry. Meredith s Diana abruptly enters her engagement after having her best friend s husband
demonstrate sexual interest in her. In a letter to her best friend, she states, Signify your approval, for I
have decided that it is the wisest thing a waif can do [marriage]. (Meredith 54) This slight narrative
alteration presents Diana sympathetically to the audience as a woman seeking male protection, a very
proper action a Victorian woman should make. The action seems sensible if not laudable, which will
only garner sympathy for Diana later on once it is revealed what

A good pricing strategy can help you determine the price point that maximizes your profit when you

to stress overruling a kingdom. Furthermore, Cimorene had more freedom to do what she fancied

In the Medieval Ages princesses did not have a lot of power. If a Queen had different beliefs than a
King the nation would go with what the King believed. This was, because in the Medieval Ages men
had more power than women. When she lived in the castle no one listened to what Cimorene wanted.
That depends entirely on what she says. Tell us about it, princess, Kazul commanded. (199). This
shows how Kazul actually gave Cimorene a chance to talk. Kazul valued Cimorene s opinion and took
her word over another dragon s word. It was better for Cimorene to be Kazul s princess, because
Kazul was a very compassionate, genial, and gallant. These were not the only reasons she was
extraordinary, but she was also an amazing friend. She was an amazing friend to Cimorene and always
stood up for her and always listened to her. In addition, Cimorene didn t have as much stress as she
was living in the castle than working for Kazul because she had less responsibilities. Cimorene was
able to enjoy living with Kazul, because Kazul was not belligerent to Cimorene instead she was a very
sympathetic dragon. While she lived with Kazul she had daily chores, but she did not have to be a
proper princess . She didn t have to act or be proper when she lived with Kazul. When she was under
Kazul s ruling she did not have to live up to high expectations. During the Medieval Ages Princesses

Mental And Social Aspects Of Kevin Who Is Diagnosed With...
This essay examines the physical, mental and social aspects of Kevin who is diagnosed with Atrial
Fibrillation (AF) and a known case of transient ischaemic attack(TIA). Atrial flutter or AF is an
arrhythmia which lead to severe cardiac complications. TIA is a nervous system deficit which occurs
as a result of impaired blood flow and usually settle down within 24 hours hence it is a short term
episode. Kevin who is a farmer, lives on his own, needs a thorough understanding of his present
situation and how it can adversely affect his daily activities. However, it is apparent that he does not
understand the seriousness of the situation well enough and at the same time he has a careless attitude.
So it is very important to provide a general ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In most cases, atrial fibrillation can end up in a larger left atria and pulmonary veins. Subsequently,
structural and functional changes happens within the heart in terms of size and shape which is called
cardiac remodelling. The initial phase is very important as that is when the the lost stabilities are
restored. Thereafter, if the action still goes on, massive changes happens in heart chambers, cardiac
function gets worse and eventually cardiac failure emerges. IN addition to all the above,
thromboembolism can be simply said as the clot formation in blood vessels which breaks and
obstructs another blood vessel. A thrombus can appear either in veins or in arteries. If it is not treated
properly by anticoagulants, stroke is the end result. Stroke can be categorized into three: ischaemic,
haemorrhagic and TIA or mini stroke. In ischemic stroke, blood circulation to the brain is deteriorated
followed by an obstruction in the blood vessel whereas haemorrhagic stroke is a result of bleeding in
the brain followed by the breakage of blood vessels. Age and cardio vascular disorders especially
hypercoagulable states are the precipitating factors for the former whereas high blood pressure and
aneurysms are the factors for latter. Mostly, TIA occur as a result of narrowing of vessels. If it is not
treated by anticoagulants at the very beginning, there is a high risk of developing stroke by means of
more occlusion in the blood vessel or the rupture. So,

Essay about Healthy Aging Interview
Mrs. Maxine Demographics and Beyond Mrs. Maxine represents my archetypal view of the healthy
seasoned citizen. Maxine is a Caucasian female born in rural, Mullens, West Virginia in 1926. She is
the only child of a Southern Baptist, middle class family. Joseph Hammond, her father, was a farmer.
Her mother, Ruby, was a full time parent and prided herself on running the house. Maxine explained
that farmers wife s were routinely responsible for the day to day operations of the household. Her
Southern Baptist faith was complements of her parents and minister grandfather. Maxine s life is a
faith filled journey engulfed with multiple personal tragedies. The first tragedy struck Maxine in the
fall of 1928. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They invested heavily in AT T stock and owned multiple rental properties. Cecil died in 1993 from
Parkinson s Disease. Maxine married Deacon Curtis Killen, a widower and fellow church member in
1994. They continue active involvement with their religious community as it nears its seventy fifth
anniversary. The Interview During a series of interviews, we explored the following topics: #61623;
What is your definition of aging? Maxine thought this question was quite basic. However, after much
thought she stated that aging is simply advancing in age. Upon further questioning she explained that
her definition is a view of the total process of aging. She does not define aging in a biological,
functional, psychological, sociologic or spiritual domain. #61623; What are you key accomplishments
(e.g., active in specific areas, social contributions, volunteer activities, and unique or adventurous
activities)? Maxine explained that what she considers her key accomplishments are not actions which
society typically views as dramatic. Her most notable accomplishment is living to be seventy two
years old. Once we acknowledged her age, she began to detail her almost life long connection with her
church and subsequent Christian community. She stressed that she has been an active, almost lifelong
member of this Christian community for the last fifty four years. During a humorous moment she
acknowledged that she

The Value Of The Credits
The credits are not provided in a lump sum but instead are claimed in equal amounts over a 10 year
credit period (many projects claim credits over 11 years, due to the rules governing how many credits
can be claimed in the first year of the credit period). Thus, the $70,000 of annual credits described in
the illustration will yield a total of $700,000 of credits over the credit period. Three examples of
LIHTC properties in Chicago are Jade Gardens, East Park SRO, and Riverside. Jade Garden is three 3
story apartment buildings with a total of 72 units that was placed in service in 1996. The project cost
about $7.4 million and received $2.7 million in tax credits allocated at about $500,000 per year. The
project received $.54 in tax credits per every dollar used in the project. East Park SRO cost about $7.1
million and has 152 units that were placed in service in 1995. This project received $2.9 million in tax
credits which is about $.53 on every dollar. Lastly, Riverside has 258 units and was put in service in
2007. This project cost about $33.7 million and received about $11.3 million in tax credits which is
$.94 on every dollar. These projects are examples of how tax credits are encouraging developers to
create housing for low income families. These homes are very modern and blend easily with the
surrounding communities. Future studies should compare military housing model and public housing
to determine which is more successful and why. Although

  • 2. Essay On Mass Media Delores Alston HUM/186 September 25, 2017 Allyson Wells INTRODUCTION Mass Media reaches a large part of our audiences today, whether it be from the movies, advertising, the internet, newspapers, magazines, twitter, you tube, Instagram, Facebook and so forth and because of this it can affect how we think and believe, both personally and as a society. Today, I will address three specific areas that product mass media channels have been used and has made a difference, either to me personally, or in society in general. A biography of D. W. Griffith, film director of The Birth of a Nation. The channel of mass media is PBS or specifically, American Masters. 1. In what way did your example shape, change, or reinforce ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So yes, it did, and still can shape and change, the part of our society that has turned against such hatred. These days, it only needs a spark. The second choice is Empire a television series that plays weekly. The product mass media channel is, twitter, Facebook, and Instagram and that is due to people wanting to be a part of the action. Because the networks are creating more shows where you can use your DVR viewing, this can mean the difference between 100 episodes to 10 for social media. 1. In what way did your example shape, change, or reinforce your own cultural values? This was a change in my cultural values, Empire has a lot of sexual issues in their episodes and It doesn t portray who or what I stand for, therefore it made me feel like I must explain myself, or express my values. The Moral Responsibilities Within A Corporation Corporations can be large or small but they all have some sort of ethical impact on their employees, shareholders, customers, community, and surrounding environments. Richard DeGeorge writes, We can speak of corporations having moral responsibilities to act in certain ways, and they are morally responsible for the consequences of their actions on people. (p. 200). Large corporations are comprised of the board of directors, management, and their workers. They also deal with suppliers, customers, and have competitors. This essay will examine the moral responsibilities within a corporation. In large corporations the success or failure of the company is the responsibility of the board of directors. According to Richard DeGeorge, The members of the board are responsible to the shareholders for the selection of honest, effective managers, and especially for the selection for the CEO and of the president of the corporation. (p. 202). The board members have a moral responsibility to ensure the corporation is run honestly, in respect to its major policies, and to ensure the interests of the shareholders are satisfied. The next responsibility within a corporation is the responsibility management has to its board of directors. They could sell out, as many of them did, even at a loss, but as noted above that does not force the company to improve. Those whose stake was big enough to merit some attempt at communicating with management tried that, too, but with little success. Sears s twelve largest investors met with CEO Ed Brennan and retail chief Michael Bozic in August of 1990. Brennen and Bozic gave an upbeat assessment of the corporation s plans. But the investors wanted more than rosey projections. They cited a grim share performance value had dropped 15 points since 1989 and gave Brennan one year to achieve marked improvement in retail, or to look for another job. Brennan fired Bozic, and promised to make cuts. But it was too little, too late, and the shareholders were not satisfied. In early December, the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), holder of 2.2 million shares, voiced its concern about Sears s performance, citing depressed stock and the failure of retailing strategies. Anion Of An Aldol Reaction In Which An Enolate Ion Formed By An aldol reaction is an addition reaction in which an aldehyde or ketone is attacked by an enolate ion of the same compound (Klein, 2015), but can also be an enolate ion of another compound. The enolate ion formed is due to an anion coming in to deprotonate the alpha carbon of a carbonyl compound (Klein, 2015). The general result of an aldol addition is always a β hydroxy aldehyde or ketone, but can also undergo condensation as it sometimes loses a small molecule or water or an alcohol group which will produce a different product altogether. This reaction can also serve as a chain elongation as it forms a new C C bond (Mayo, Pike, Forbes, 2015). • 23. Data And Information On Health Information Management The terms data and information are often used interchangeably, however, with health information management, there are differences. Health information begins with data which are items, observations or raw facts. Data, when collected, does not necessarily have to be understood by the person gathering it. It is simply a collection of facts (Davis Lacour, 2014, p. 33). In order to understand the various data that is collected it must be organized. The goal in doing this is to provide information. Data refers to the units of observation while information is data that has been organized, making it useful (Davis Lacour, 2014, p. 34). When a patient is hospitalized, if his/her temperature is taken and simply listed in a vertical line that information is useless to anyone who looks at the list. There is nothing that explains what the numbers represent, let alone help a provider with patient care. The valley of ashes is a gloomful, lifeless place where the poor are left exhausted and looking for something higher to believe in. The rich live on the Eggs, old money on the East island and new money on the West island. People from old money are from British descent and do not need to work to live their luxurious lifestyles. People with new money are from German or Irish descent and are typically political or theatrical people. Wealthy persons live a colorful, exciting life without stress or need of a higher power. F. Scott Fitzgerald utilizes the valley of ashes to symbolize how the time and energy spent by the rich, both new and old money, neglect the poor in his novel The Great Gatsby. The valley of ashes is a pit of despair compared to the areas in which the prosperous reside. The valley is a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens; where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and, finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air (Page 23). In this case, Fitzgerald uses lifeful imagery to describe the spiritless atmosphere in the valley of ashes. The liveliness in the imagery is ironic because of the depressing setting it forms. His description of the people as barely keeping it together helps set the mood of misery. Additionally, the valley is described by Nick as a solemn dumping ground (Page ... Well, if your answer is NO, let me inform you that Steinbeck did talk about Religion in his book. There are many similarities in John Steinbeck s Grapes of Wrath and Christ s story. In The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck presents religion in different ways ranging from Jim Casy s similarities to Christ, the use of Christian theology, and the symbolism of some characters as pastors. Throughout his book, Steinbeck recounts the great depression era and its effects on proletariats. The major theme throughout this book is the role of Christianity in the society. Over time, advances in the field of molecular biology has allowed scientists to take a particular gene from any organism, including, bacteria, viruses, plants or animals, and introduce those genes into another organism. An organism transformed using genetic engineering techniques is known as transgenic organism (Independent learning center, 2012). This paper discusses the positive and negative effects of genetically engineered organisms in agricultural applications and the Canadian regulation or legislation that relates to this issue. Many farmers in Canada have welcomed major crop plants produced by genetic engineering. Four major transgenic crops including canola, corn, soy and sugar beet have been approved for commercial production in Canada (Canada Agency, 2015). Transgenic organisms offer a range of benefits in the agricultural applications. Over many years, transgenic organisms have helped increase crop productivity by introducing drought tolerance and disease resistance to crops. While the speaker on stage bellows his gospel of forgiveness, some students halfheartedly nod along, some stare at their shoes, and some snore. Looking around the chapel from my seat in the back row, I am overwhelmed with one impression: apathy. This mood that hung in the room was pervasive, making me feel uncomfortable because I realized that I felt it too. While I usually enjoy learning for its own sake, apathy has not escaped me. Not only does this mindset manifest in my school s chapel services, but also in the classroom. When students do not care about learning, they either put in the least amount of effort possible or resort to rote memorization to maintain their grade. Instead of understanding the material, they glean little knowledge that they can apply to their lives, making education relatively pointless. This thoughtlessness maddens me because I want to be purposeful in everything that I do. • 40. The Character Of Diana In The New Woman George Meredith s 1885 Diana of the Crossways accounts the charming and witty titular heroine through her miserable marriage and the subsequent fallout. Although Diana is based on polemicist Caroline Norton s own disastrous marriage and divorce scandal, Meredith s protagonist borders between New Woman themes and Victorian feminine ideals, as Diana does not damningly deviates from the latter. In this essay, I will explore how Meredith has rendered the character of Diana palatable for upper and middle class Victorian readers by comparing her to her real life counterpart, to Thomas Hardy s portrayal of the New Woman and his issues with publication and how Meredith s characterization has created an archetypical character thereby allowing for critical and commercial success. The New Woman was a feminist ideal used to describe an independent, educated, and self reliant woman who typically would push the limits of the male dominated society. While Meredith has come to be remembered as a friend to women s plight for his sympathetic depiction of women in his novels, he has taken certain liberties to convey Diana as digestible as possible to his audience rather than realistically or particularly liberated. In a time in which women were expected to get married not that marriage was meant to satisfy their emotional or sexual needs Caroline Norton is often described as being pushed into marriage to George Norton. Caroline Norton and her sisters had come to be known as the Graces , an allusion to the Greek goddesses of charm, beauty, and human creativity, for their own beauty and accomplishments. For this, George Norton was willing to accept her without a dowry. Meredith s Diana abruptly enters her engagement after having her best friend s husband demonstrate sexual interest in her. In a letter to her best friend, she states, Signify your approval, for I have decided that it is the wisest thing a waif can do [marriage]. (Meredith 54) This slight narrative alteration presents Diana sympathetically to the audience as a woman seeking male protection, a very proper action a Victorian woman should make.
