Fair Value Hierarchy
Memorandum to: Accounting department of family finance co. from: Daisy subject: fair value
hierarchy date: december 15, 2012
Introduction
Family Finance Co. (FFC), a publicly traded commercial bank, invests in a variety of securities in
order to enhance returns greater than interest paid on bank deposits and other liabilities. The primary
investments of FFC are collateralized debt obligation, mortgage backed securities, auction rate
securities, equity securities in nonpublic companies, interest rate swaps, and a fuel swap for gasoline.
FFC measures the derivative at fair value, presenting the portion of the fair value change by using the
fair value hierarchy. This memo will present the appropriate classification in the fair value ... Show

Also, as of the measurement date, there is lack of recent and relevant transactions. Thus, the fair value
measurement of this CDO should be classified as Level 3. By analyzing the market changes, FFC
determined that the CDO s market was not active and there has been a significant decrease in the
volume and level of activity. FFC used an income approach valuation technique which is present value
technique to make measurement. Because this approach can maximize the use of relevant observable
inputs and minimizes the use of unobservable inputs to reflect the fair value more representatively.
Instrument 2 Mortgage Backed Security The fair value measurement of the Mortgage Backed Security
investment shall be categorized within Level 2 of the fair value hierarchy. According to ASC 820 10
35 52, Level 2 inputs include the following: a. Quoted prices for similar assets or liabilities in active
markets . These inputs included quoted prices in active markets for similar MBSs with insignificant
adjustments for differences between the MBS held by FFC and similar securities. In Q4 of 2012, the
prices for transactions didn t reduce the relevant to the fair value measurement. Therefore, the fair
value measurement of this MBS should be classified into Level 2 of fair value hierarchy. The market

Comparing Hobbe s and Locke s Theories on Nature
Two books that I am going to be drawing information from for my paper are Hobbes Leviathan and
Locke s Two Treatises of Government. This essay will be focusing on the differences between Hobbes
and Locke s ideas on the state of nature. One of the biggest, and in my opinion most important points
that makes Hobbes different from Locke is his belief that the state of nature is equal to the state of
war. Thomas Hobbes was an English philosopher, who lived between 1588 and 1679. He witnessed
multiple events throughout his life that later led him to write his book Leviathan, in 1651 once the war
had ended. Hobbes witnessed the English Civil War (1642 1651), the interregnum period of England
starting in 1649, and the hardest of them ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Hobbes PAGE NUMBER)
After that Hobbes goes on to say, The life of man is solitary, poore, nasty, brutish, and short. (Hobbes)
He argues that nothing is unjust in the state of nature. He believes that everyone has the right to do
anything he/she wants because in the state of nature, there is no right or wrong and there is no law;
everyone can do everything and nothing can be unjust. He says that Where there is no common power,
no law; where no law, no injustice. (Hobbes)
So all in all with Hobbes, he believes that all people are equal, therefore no power over the others in
the state can be established. Everyone is the enemy to everyone else, therefore, no on can secure
himself/herself, there is no property, and nothing is unjust. So overall, Hobbes state of nature is very
pessimistic and is not a place to survive.
Locke s idea of the state of nature is that everyone is equal to everyone. He states that, the state of
nature is also the state of equality, wherein all the power and jurisdiction is reciprocal, no one having
more than another.. (Locke) Locke however, does not think that this leads the people to war. He thinks
that the state of nature is NOT equal to the state of war, but there is a chance of it becoming the state
of war. He says that the person who committed the crime against a certain person puts himself in the
state of war with that

The Role Of Sexism In Advertising
Advertisements from the early 1900s to today s marketing propaganda have changed dramatically in
terms of picture and context through the years. Some similarities still remain through the evolution of
marketing merchandise, but many differences can be seen in more recent ads. The Palmolive soap
company s advertisements from the 1900s exemplify the issue of sexism that took place in that time
period. The ads primarily focus on the youth and beauty of women and how it appeals to men. The
advertisement creators target the insecurities of women and threaten the achievement of being loved
by a man. Women are made to believe that their intelligence does not contribute to a man s affection,
but only beauty will grant a woman the gift of eternal love ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Creators focus mainly on the appearance of the ads rather than presenting a contextual argument.
Advertisement agencies have almost completely dropped phrases and text on their ads and solely rely
on the quality of the picture to present their case. Coloration, symbolism, and other visual cues are
emphasized in today s ads to catch the audience s attention. Whereas the older ads depended almost
entirely on presenting their product through bombarding the endorsement with paragraphs of text. The
advancement of technology brings new ways to access more eye catching coloration and a better
quality of picture. Many people are more attracted to a brightly colored, provocative image rather than
a page full of bland text which can be seen as a reason to completely rely on picture

Realism In Goodfellas
Considered one of the Top 25 films of all time, GoodFellas, a biographical crime film directed and co
written by Martin Scorsese follows the life of mob associate and FBI informant Henry Hill who is
played by actor, Ray Liotta. GoodFellas is a film adaptation of the 1986 non fiction book called
Wiseguy by Nicholas Pileggi. The film was subsequently released in 1990 after a few years of
formulating. Scorsese was never fascinated in making a mob film until he read Pileggi s book and was
drawn to the realism of the gangster lifestyle that was exposed. The realism of Henry Hill s life that is
publicized in the film is considered an essential element that makes it feel authentic. Scorsese s film

High and low angle shots can be a extremely effective technique if filmed correctly. Using these
techniques can create more dramatic, intense scenes that might not be as effective if using different
angle shots. Consider the scene where Karen lingers above Henry with a gun pointing at his head. This
is a good example of how low angle and high angle shots work alongside each other. For instance, in
the high angle shot of Karen, she is in the position of dominance. While the gun helps, the angle
shows Karen above Henry not only in a physical manner but visually as well. Because of the angle
Scorsese uses, Karen appears to have total dominance and control over the situation while reducing
Henry s power that he has established throughout the film. On the other hand, Henry is viewed from a
low angle shot with the gun pointed at his end. The position of the low camera angle shows Henry in a
helpless, defenseless manner with no clear positive outcome. The angle portrays Karen as a big,
overpowering presence as Henry is viewed as scared and vulnerable. Scorsese does a fantastic job
with manipulating angles and developing certain feelings from viewing these

Was Rome Successful
Ancient Rome
The Roman Empire was one of the greatest, and well rounded civilization in ancient times. What made
them so great was their knowledge that they received from the Greeks and their ability to grow from
what they learned. The Romans did not start off with a dictator, they had elected people to power. In
the early years of the republic of Rome, this allowed them to grow. Starting off in the middle of Italy
and eventually conquering all territories around the Mediterranean Sea. There are several factors that
made Rome great, and their stability and longevity as a power house is worth talking about When
talking about the Roman Empire and what made them great, it s important to talk about the Roman
army. The Roman army was a very ferocious army, and that had much to do with their training regime.
One had to be very fit in order to go through the harsh training, and honestly, failure was no option
considering there would be punishments dealt out for failure. The new recruits would support the front
line of the army. By putting the new recruits at the front of the line. This stopped them from fleeing,
and also gave them confidence knowing that there are battle tested soldiers behind them. The romans
also had developed catapults called onagers. This allowed them to tear down walls from a ... Show

be informed to what was going on. It allowed the people of Rome to feel like they were important, and
also unified the country at the same time. Having something like this would be very beneficial to me if
I were living in ancient times. I find new to be interesting and important as I m sure they did in ancient

Identity Theory Of Social Class
Statement of the Problem Identity is a powerful force that shapes the way individuals interact with the
world (Burke Reitzes, 1981). As a result, scholars have devoted much time toward understanding how
identities such as gender, race, and sexual orientation influence the human condition (Farr, Forssell,
Patterson, 2010; Kerr Multon, 2015; Smith, Bowman, Hsu, 2007). However, among this growing body
of literature, the study of social class as an identity is relatively scarce (Ostrove Cole, 2003). Rather
than examining social class as an identity, many scholars have instead chosen to treat it as a
demographic variable (Aries, 2008; Aries Berman, 2013; Lubrano, 2004; Mantsios, 2007; Park
Denson, 2013). Perhaps this has occurred because social class is such an elusive concept to describe
(Lareau, 2008; Ostrove Cole, 2003). Although scholars generally agree that there are distinct
differences among the speech patterns, mannerisms, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Identity theory is a theoretical framework that posits that individuals have many different identities
that intersect, such as social class, race, and gender (Burke Tully, 1977; Michalski Helmig, 2008;
Stryker, 1968; Stryker, 1987; Stryker, 2008). However, identity theory also acknowledges that these
varying identities tend to exist hierarchically (Stryker Burke, 2000). Therefore, identities that are more
central to a person s sense of self are more salient. That is, salient identities tend to be higher on a
person s salience hierarchy than other identities. For example, a person may identify as a heterosexual
woman, an African American, a Protestant, and a mother. However, if after considering all of these
identities, she were to indicate that her identity of being a mother was the most important to her sense
of self, and then researchers could infer that her mother identity would be set highest on her salience

How the Concept of Diversity Rises with Globalization
Introduction
Diversity is generally defined as acknowledging, understanding, accepting, valuing and celebrating
differences among people with respect to age, class, ethnicity, gender, physical and mental ability,
race, sexual orientation, spiritual practice, and public assistance status (Etsy,et al. 1995).
The idea of diversity emerged when globalisation came into the picture in 1990 91 (Bhatia, 2008). As
globalization began to affect organisations, there was a coverage of workplace from diverse countries,
cultures, values, and styles that presented tremendous opportunities as well as challenges (Bhatia,
2008). Organisations can have the ultimate lead in the market place if effective human resources are in
place. Now in the 21st century, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When diversity management was first introduced, the system was guided by the melting pot approach.
Assuming that the minority will succumb to the cultural beliefs, values, and lifestyles of the majority
but upon further observation, organisations begin to realise that employees do not set aside their
lifestyles, believes, traditions or work styles regardless of what the dominant culture was in the
organisation (Bhatia, 2008). Therefore, it is preferred to respect, understand and value cultural
differences in an organisation instead of trying to change them. Through those difference,
management has to practice and learn to adapt to the life of the diverse groups.
The task of managing diversity is to create a comfortable environment for all employees to work in so
that they can be effective in their jobs. It is important for top managements to strongly emphasize on
this diverse culture as a goal and include diversity initiatives in their business strategies.
With the digits of women, young workers and ethnic minorities joining the work force,

When a statement of cash flow is viewed along with the other financial statements, it provides
information that enables users to evaluate the changes in net assets of an enterprise, its financial
structure including its liquidity and solvency and its ability to affect the amounts and timing of cash
flows in order to adapt to changing circumstances and opportunities.
Under the heading, Benefits of Cash Flow Information, the ministry of corporation affairs describes
that, Cash flow information is useful in assessing the ability of an organization to generate cash and
cash equivalents that enables users to develop models to assess and compare the present value of the
future cash flows of different companies (Benefits of Cash Flow Information, Government of India).
As a result of this the cash flow statement enhances the comparability of the reporting of operating
performance by different companies because it eliminates the effects of using different accounting
treatments for the same transactions and events. Consistency in financial statements year over year
plays a large part in accounting as it allows management to easily compare the company s
performance.
How does a statement of cash flow effect business managers and stakeholders?

isolation. This quotation pertains to the protagonists in both The Catcher in the Rye and Franny and
Zooey by J. D. Salinger. Both protagonists overcome estrangement when they learn from their siblings
the underlying reason behind their feelings of isolation. In The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield
fails to form a connection with others at Pencey Prep and escapes to New York City in an attempt to
overcome his alienation. Similarly, in Franny and Zooey, Franny Glass seeks religion to cope with her

Holden s desperation has made him travel from Pencey Prep, in Pennsylvania, all the way to New

moral values about sex, he desperately reaches out to anyone who might be willing to ease his
loneliness, and that leads him to accept the offer of letting a prostitute come to his hotel. Although
once she arrives, he feels insecure and refuses to have sex. The prostitute is a symbol of instant
gratification that Holden initially thought he wanted to comfort his isolation, but ends up feeling too
insecure to have sex because the prospect that his first sexual experience would be with a prostitute
depresses him. When Holden refuses to pay the extra charge that the prostitute requests, she gets

The Rights Of The Criminal Justice System
In order to maintain the rights of its citizens, our Country established the Miranda system in order to
protect the rights of individuals who go through the Criminal Justice System. Prior to the Miranda
system, individuals did not receive a fair trial considering that some were forced to plead guilty for a
crime that they did not commit. It wasn t until 1964 that the Supreme Court realized that the accused
rights should be protected during an interrogation. Miranda was a step forward in order to protect our
rights as citizens, and has evolved over time in order to prevent an unlawful confession. The Fifth
amendment in the United States Constitution protects from self incrimination. According to Gaines
and Miller, A defendant cannot be required to provide information about his or her own criminal
activity (Gaines and Miller, p.234). In the early years of our Criminal Justice system, our government
had taken very little initiative to protect our fundamental right that we would be protected from self
incrimination. However, in 1964, the Supreme Court received a case that led to the Miranda Decision.
Escobedo v. Illinois set the stage for Miranda and impacted how the criminal justice system would
prosecute offenders. Escobedo v. Illinois, consisted of a convicted murderer who had incriminated
himself... Police officers ignored the defendant s request to speak with his lawyer (Gaines and Miller,
p.234). Also, Miranda was not informed of his rights prior to the police

Dual Language Research Paper
Dual Language Program Dual language (DL) programs purpose is to create bilingual, and bicultural
students without sacrificing these students accomplishments in school. The goals of (DL) programs
are to offer quality instruction for language minority students and to provide instruction in a second
language for English speaking students. (Garcia, 2005) DL programs also target for biliteracy (the
ability to read and write in two languages). Dual language is a program where English speaking
students, and English language learners (ELL) are joined in the same classroom. Instruction is taught
in two languages: English and their native language of the (ELL). The objective of the instruction is
for both groups of students to become fluently bilingual benefiting each other.

U.s. Constitution And American Public Policy
America has come up with this predefined set of rules that everyone in our society must follow, Laws.
Laws have been thoroughly discussed and picked to assure that the nation runs smoothly. Americans
have their rights to certain aspects of life, but most of which are violated or misused by court officials
or government officials. Many years ago, people decided they would find a way to govern America.
They formed the U.S. Constitution, a form of government like no other by the people, of the people,
and for the people. With The Constitution in effect, laws had to be made. American Public Policy
explains how American Law in American Courts worked and why those laws were implemented.
Americans have their constitutional rights which were not limited, but government officials always
abused their power and tried taking the rights that we as American citizens have away. Those rights
included: Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Religion, Freedom of the Press, Due Process, Right to
Privacy, and Right to Keep and Bear Arms. The goal of all state courts was: no U.S. Citizen or
resident should be denied liberties, rights and privileges guaranteed in our constitutional republic. The
American law for the courts are needed to protect women and children because both are commonly
known to be discriminated against. American laws are being promoted because the government wants
to preserve the liberties of Americans. Americans are being ridiculed and lied to about their rights by
foreign laws

Bricklayer Lessons
One of the lessons that were taught in Seeking the Edge , The Bricklayer and The True Worth of an

chooses to keep an experienced bricklayer that did quality work instead of letting him go due to
financial reasons. Then Alfonse fired Tony, who did mediocre work but wanted a pay increase too.
This was interesting since companies make this mistake of trading quality products for mediocre
products just to save money. These types of stories make me think of Lionel Corporation in the late
1950s and into the late 1960s when they decided to save manufacturing costs and switched to
composite train sets but with low quality standards. If there are countless

The Depth Of The River Affect Its Overall Ph From Mid July...
Question: Does the depth of the river affect its overall pH from mid december 2015 to early january
2016?
Knowledge Probe: According to.epa.gov/acidrain/measure/pH.html, pH is a measure of the hydrogen
ion concentration of a solution. Solutions with a high concentration of hydrogen ions have a low pH
and solutions with a low concentrations of H+ ions have a high pH. A pH of 7 is the most neutral you
can get and 0 being the most acidic and 14 being the most basic. each level is 10 times more basic/
acidic than the previous level, for example a pH of 8 is 10 times more basic than 7, and a pH of 9 is
100 times more basic than 7. when an acidic substance reacts with a basic substance they counter each

the depth in inches to the pH directly, and the average of each is at the bottom of the table.
Data Analysis: On trial 5 something interesting happened where it did not match the trend of other
data points. you can see this when comparing the depth to pH with the grapHs; for example trial 1 s
depth and pH is lower than trial 2 s depth and pH, and trial 2 s depth and pH is lower than trial 3 s
depth and pH etc. that sort of trend is fluent through the data except trial 5 where depth was lower than
the previous trials but the pH was the highest collected. My data is accurate to a point but when
collecting the depth of the river it presented a challenge to get 100% accurate because it is constantly

Impossibility Of Moral Responsibility Analysis
The Illusion of Free Will or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Embrace the Basic Argument
Arguments pro et contra the possibility of free will inevitably attempt to answer the question on
whether or not moral responsibility is possible. In Impossibility of Moral Responsibility philosopher
Galen Strawson attempts to show proof that, not only is moral responsibility impossible, but it
necessarily follows, whether or not determinism turns out to be true or false. It is my contention that
Strawson s argument is correct, and it is impossible for us to be responsible for our actions. As a
result, it is equally impossible to be morally responsible for those same actions. The consequence is
simple; free will is an illusion. We hang tight to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
our beliefs, desires, and predisposed psychological structure. Through this grand heuristically make

used to explain why some people act differently in a similar situation. They are a product of their
beliefs, desires, and our predisposed psychological structure. In contrast, it would be odd to think our
actions were not a result of these beliefs, desires, and predisposed psychological structures. That
would relegate the actions people make to being a consequence of randomness and chance. Therefore,

Apple Is A Company s Competitive Edge
Abstract
Apple is one of the largest and well recognized companies as far as technology is concerned. They
built a differentiation strategy that sets them apart from their competitors and allow them to sell their
products at a higher price while still appealing to a loyal target audience. They have also strive
themselves on building an ecosystems that keeps all of their products intertwined with one another and
this has proven to be successful for them because they have branched off into several different but
relevant markets. Although Apple is a very successful company, since Steve Jobs is no longer a part of
the equation, there are many questions concerning whether or not Tim Cook will be able to sustain the
company s competitive edge. In order to fully assess that it is important that we conduct a S.W.O.T
analysis not only on Apple but also on its competitor so we can see the areas in which the company
strives and those in which they can make improvements. Once all the information is gathered, it is
important for the company to use their strengths to capitalize on their opportunities while minimizing
their weaknesses better allowing them to avoid their threats to not only have a competitive advantage
for the moment but sustain one for the future.
Apple Inc. is a world renowned company, recognized for its contribution to the technological market.

Outcast In Tim Burton
In society, young people are often told who they should be and what they should do with their lives.
By using outcast protagonists and strained family relationships, Tim Burton emphasizes that society is
always going to look down on strangeness, but having a strong family relationship can help build
confidence. Through the films Big Fish and Alice in Wonderland, Tim Burton conveys how being an
outcast can affect your future. In Big Fish, Edward Bloom decides to leave the town of Ashton with a
giant, whom he befriended, named Karl. He then comes across 2 paths and decides to take the one that
was much older and more run down than the other one. Finally, he discovers a town named Spectre, a
place where nobody leaves because it is so perfect. Edward decides that he must leave because he
doesn t fit in with everyone that is there. Before leaving Edward says, Now there comes a point where
a reasonable man will swallow his pride and admit that he has made a terrible mistake. The truth is, I
was never a reasonable man. Leaving Spectre illustrated that Edward wasn t like normal people and it
was made clear by just listening to his stories. Even his story telling made him abnormal in a sense
because he was the only one telling these outrageous stories. In Alice in Wonderland, at her
engagement party, Alice decides that she isn t going to be forced to marry Hamish, a boy in which she
barely knows and doesn t even like. Refusing to marry Hamish illustrates how Alice doesn t fit in

Essay on Berkeley s Idealism
Berkeley s Idealism
In this essay I shall give the historical background to Berkeley s Idealism and then offer an argument
for Idealism and suggest how an idealist could defend his theory against common objections and
criticisms.
Bishop George Berkeley s Idealism or Immaterialism is the theory that the physical world exists only
in the experiences minds have of it. Berkeley s Idealism restricts minds to God, human beings,
animals and whatever other spirits there may commonly thought to be, and says that everything else
the intrinsically non mental exists only as features of the experience of these minds.
Although this would initially seem to be a bizarre view, if we look at the science and philosophy of the
seventeenth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Further, not only are these worlds different qualitatively, but they are located in different realms. If we
accept that the things of which we are immediately aware possess secondary qualities and that these
secondary qualities exist only in the mind , then what we are aware of are, ideas in the mind , not
objects in the external world. Therefore, although these ideas of which we are aware can be held to
represent, and in terms of primary qualities, resemble, objects in the world, they also constitute a veil
of perception which stands between the perceiver and the external world. From this we can conclude
that the external world, as investigated by science, is different from the experiential or phenomenal
realm.
One of the important things we must be clear about when taking about Idealism is the term idea itself.
As used by Berkeley and Locke the term idea does not have its normal sense. We tend to think of
ideas as things that are thought, and indeed ideas are considered to be close to concepts. John Locke,
however, defined an idea as whatever is the object of the understanding when a man thinks and he
included sensations and sensory images amongst ideas. By adopting the term idea for all mental
objects Locke declared his intent to assimilate

Constantine And Empress Helen Their Impact On Christianity
Topic: Constantine and Empress Helena: Their Impact on Christianity
Who was Constantine?:
Constantine was believed to be born on February 22, either in 272 or 273 AD. The exact date and year
is not definite. He was the son of Marcus Flavius Valerius Constantius Herculius Augustus (mainly
known as Constantius Chlorus) and Flavia Iulia Helena Augusta (mainly known as Saint Helena). His
father was an officer of the army, and his mother was an inn keeper s daughter. His father later
divorced his mother Helena, and married Flavia Maximiania Theodora; his commanding officer s
daughter. Constantius Chlorus was ranked to Caesar, the deputy emperor in the west in 293.

Constantine also saw this as a sign from God. Constantine continually said that his success was from
his conversion to Christianity and the support of God. His devotion to Christianity was closely
associated with this rise to power.
What did he do for the Christian Religion?:
Constantine was credited for converting the Roman Empire to Christianity. Along with the Eastern
Roman Emperor Gaius Valerius Licinianus Licinius Augustus (better known as Licinius I) signed the
Edict of Milan, which ensured religious tolerance for Christians. The signing of the Edict of Milan
gave freedom of worship to all, and brought an end to the Age of Martyrs and ended the persecution of
Christianity. Constantine helped convene and took part in the first meetings of Christian Churches,
known as the Council of Nicea. The council of Nicea established equality of the Father and Son. He
initiated the evolution of the empire into a Christian state. He provided the impulse for a distinctively
Christian culture and prepared the way for the growing of Byzantine and Western medieval culture.
After his victory the battle of Tiber River s Mulvian Bridge, Constantine was considered the dominant
figure in the empire. In this position Constantine ordered Maximinus II Dais to cease his subjugation
of the Christians.
Sometimes it was debated whether he was the first Christian emperor at all. The religion he did have
was a mix blend of Paganism and Christianity. Constantine s

The Total Revenue And Total Cost
A. Profit Maximization a1. The total revenue (TR) to total cost (TC) approach relies on the fact that
profit equals revenue minus that cost and focuses on maximizing the greatest difference between TR
and TC.
Total Revenue (TR): Is the income made from the sales of a given product. (McConnell., 2011) This
total does not take include the cost of producing the product. To calculate the TR of a product, you
must first multiply the sales price of the widget by the quantity sold.
TR = Sales Price * Quantity Sold
Total Cost (TC): The sum of fixed cost and variable cost at each level of output. (McConnell., 2011)
TC = TFC + TVC (Total cost = Total Fixed Cost + Total Variable Cost)
Graphically speaking the total revenue curve rises, but at a decreasing rate the curve turns into more of
a horizontal line. Ultimately, total revenue begins to decrease. a2. The marginal revenue (MR) to
marginal cost (MC) approach uses marginal analysis by comparing (MR) and (MC).
Marginal Cost (MC): The change in total cost as the output level changes one unit. (McConnell.,
2011)
Marginal Revenue (MR): The change in total revenue from the sale of one additional level of output.
(McConnell., 2011)
MR = (change in total revenue) / (change in quantity/output) or MR = ∆TR / ∆Q
Since Company A is a price taker, the sale of each additional widget adds to total revenue the same
amount that is equal to the selling price. Thus, marginal revenue equals the same selling price that

Where Have All the Flowers Gone? Pete Seeger Pete Seeger was an American singer, song writer, and
activist. He used his music as a social commentary on what he witnessed during the 1960s.
Throughout this time, Seeger popularized many influential songs, many of which became popular
anthems for different movements, most notably We Shall Overcome. Seeger s songs were normally
protesting violence and war, as well as supporting the emerging counterculture and the environmental
movement that was seen during the 1960s. With all his music writing, Pete Seeger influenced many
other singer/song writers and left a lasting impression on the 60s. Born in Manhattan, Pete Seeger
grew up among an incredible talented, musical family. His father established the music department in
Berkley, as well as musical composition at Juliard (called the New York Institute of Musical Art at the

He was active in the environmental movement, which was started and supported by Rachel Carson,

leaning toward the non violent side of protesting, having claimed to be a pacifist. This makes me feel
as though he was similar to Kurt Vonnegut, in that war seemed to be illogical in Slaughterhouse Five.
Seeger chose music as his medium of protest, instead of the written or spoken word. He worked with
artists like Bob Dylan, and his work pushed for the renewal of folk music in America, a genre of
music that persists until today with artists such as Jack Johnson, Rosanne Cash and Bruce Springsteen.
All of these artists have music identifiable as folk music, and were able to gain the noteriery they were

The Murders In The Rue Morgue by Edgar Allan Poe Essay
What makes a short story great? Great characters? A great plot? Whatever it is, it does not have as
much time to develop as a novel does. However, in limited space, author Edgar Allan Poe creates a
brilliant, suspenseful, and brain wracking story. The Murders in the Rue Morgue begins by comparing
the analytical mind to the game of chess. Eventually, Poe ties in the occurrences of a bizarre incident
with a flashback to 18 . Through analyzing the scene and using clues and witnesses testimonies, a
character of great analytical power solves a murder mystery that no one else can even remotely get a
grasp on. The story may sound ordinary at first, but upon the completion of the novel, a doubtful

Most Influential Characters Of The Old Testament
Abraham is one the most influential characters of the Old Testament in helping us to understand the
Gospel. He lived 4,000 years ago traveling from what is known today as Iraq to modern day Israel. He
was a friend of God and became a father of faith as well as father to many nations. Therefore, through
this passage, we read about one of the dramatic story of God testing Abraham s faith. It took Abraham
twenty five years to finally receive his first heir son and God tells him in vs. 2 Then God said, Take
your son, your only son, whom you love Isaac and go to the land of Moriah. Go and sacrifice him as a

God meant every word in this verse even though He knew exactly how precious Isaac was to
Abraham. I mean it took Abraham until his 100th age to finally bore a son. First lesson we can learn
here is that God does not tempt, He tests us. untested faith is no faith at all Abraham passed the
hardest test ever known to men because he did not withhold his only son simply because he obeyed
the voice of the Lord. The second lesson we can learn from this passage is Abraham s faith. Abraham
had all night and morning to be sacred, worried, sad, and terrified, about what God had instructed him
to do. However because he obeyed God and knew that God would provide an alternative sacrifice, he
had faith in God. In verse 8, Isaac asks Abraham where is the sheep for the burnt offering, Abraham
replied, God will provide a sheep for the burnt offering, my son.

Assembling In The Iliad

Assembling in The Iliad
(Holding councils of war or holding assemblies) Every great war in history has been determined, to
some extent, by the powerful strategies executed by one party of the war. These strategies , most of the
time, are not the brainchild of one individual, but more or less a group of people collaborating toward
one strategy effective enough to turn the tides of battle. The most effective way for important leaders
to voice their opinions for their next endeavor is achieved through the use of assemblies. Assemblies
were very important to the armies in the Trojan War, as both sides had great power, meaning that
cunning strategy would be the winning factor for one of the parties involved in the Trojan War.
However, assemblies held during the Trojan War were more one sided toward the authoritative figures
rather than a true collaboration between leaders and wise men. These assemblies follow a simple
pattern: a leader calls out to the army to form an assembly when he sees it fit; then, the leaders and
wise men then collaborate and voice their opinions on the matter at hand; and finally, the figure with
the highest authority in the assembly decides what to do next as a result of the assembly. The assembly
begins with an important leader calling for one when he sees it fit to form one. For example, an
assembly was called by Achilles due to concerns from the plague in Book 1; it was revealed that

Russia had been allies during the war against Nazi Germany, their alliance had always been one of

to begin their campaign to oust Castro. The Bay of Pigs failed badly, humiliating newly appointed
President Kennedy.
Kennedy was determined not to allow the Cuban Missile Crisis to tarnish his name any further. How
he responded to the threat would affect more than his political career, the fate of the world rested on
his shoulders, as a nuclear war would have disastrous consequences. Despite the popular Western

it would be seen as weakness, which would be exploited by the other side. However it seemed like
there was no way for both men to be satisfied in this situation.

Soviet ships continued on their course regardless, only turning round once they had reached the
blockade. One ship, however, passed by the blockade headed straight to Cuba.

Introduction:
There have been numerous changes in the computer technology since the first computer was invented
and this is an ongoing process. During this whole time computers have shrinked tremendously in size
and now can be carried in pocket and as a wearable object. Wearable technology provides human
enhancement in personal level and offers several opportunities in enterprise. It is essential to
understand the history, evolution and other enabling technologies to effectively adopt and improve the
use of wearable technologies.
History and evolution of Wearable Technology:
The first form of wearable technologies was probably the wrist watch, which was designed to provide
a particular service to the users, was invented as early as the late 1500s. Then the portable radio, later
evolved into the Walkman which was also perpetuated because of users desire to have access to a
particular service all the time. These desires for continuous access of services have pervaded the
development of most of the wearable technologies. The development of computers has exhibited a
progression towards mobility and portability, from massive mainframe computers to desktops to
laptops, to PDA s and to wristwatch computers which were

The Catholic Church s Stance On Peaceful Conversion
Conversion to Christianity in Medieval Iberia invoked ambivalent feelings among Christians at the
time. Christians in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries intended to convert Jews and Muslims
through kind words and religious teachings from the Bible. This idea of peaceful conversion,
nevertheless, evolved and Christians began converting non believers through violence and
compulsion. Also, even after individuals were converted, Christians did not always fully trust their
motivations, and believed they would revert into their old religions. While Marian miracles did help
alleviate these tensions, thousands of vicious acts were committed against Jews and Muslims during
this time period. In this essay, I am going to examine the idea of conversion from the Christian
perspective, and how Christians were able to tempt Jews and Muslims to convert. I am also going to
compare the contradictory nature of conversion through peaceful and violent means. This comparison
will showcase how the Roman Catholic Church s stance on peaceful conversion was overcome by
local Christian communities. Conversion is the act of changing one s religion to another religion.
During the twelfth to the fifteenth century in Medieval Iberia, a number of Jews and Muslims
converted to Christianity. To Christians, conversions represented the elimination of dangerous enemies
and the ongoing triumph of the new Israel. Christians viewed themselves as the chosen people, as they
believed that Jesus Christ

with teachers and students since almost all of them were from different countries and they had
absolutely different motivation to work and study. Life abroad was different from life I got use to in
Uzbekistan.
However, thanks to my previous work experience at UzTEA and British Council s project I managed

The Importance Of Critical Reading
According to (Critical literacy practices, 2011) critical reading is a type of literacy practice that is
learning practice in which students analyze and critique language and power relationships within
written texts. Many college freshmen are not prepared for critical reading, yet a lot of higher education
organizations and levels do not require individual critical reading courses. Even though critical
reading is an often cited neutral topic in some different colleges structured reading courses. In many
different colleges, at times, there is little to no research that exists that may also describe how
composition instructors teach critical reading strategies. No matter the subject or the age of the reader.
An overall reading goal for critical readers includes reading an article to comprehend information
based on what was stated within the text. While readers read to gain understanding from the text, the
readers also use additional information at times such as factual ideas, prior knowledge, and also
context clues to understand the difficult text. There are many ways to become a critical reader which

make bets even at better than 50 50 odds knowing wholly that their mathematical expectations of
winning money in a particular kind of gamble were greater the more money they bet. This
contradiction is known as St. Petersburg Paradox. St. Petersburg paradox denotes to the problem why
most people are unenthusiastic to take part in a fair bet or game.
For example, offer of participating in a gamble in which a person has even chance (that is, 50 50 odds)
of winning or losing £1000 is a fair game. To explain it, Bernoulli ... Show more content on

Since the individual behaves on the basis of expected utility from the extra money if he wins a game
and the marginal utility of money to him declines as he has extra money, most individuals will not
play the game , that is, will not make a bet. It is in this way that Bernoulli resolved St. Petersburg
paradox .
A graphic illustration will make clear Bernoulli s solution to the paradox. Consider Figure 17.1 in
which on the X axis, the quantity of money (thousands of rupees) and on the Y axis, marginal utility of
money (rupees) to an individual are measured. Suppose an individual has 20 thousands of rupees with
him and can make a bet at even odd (i.e., 50 50 chance) of winning or losing rupees one thousand.
If he wins the bet, money with him will rise to 21 thousand (20 + 1) rupees. If as a result of an
increase in money with him, his expected marginal utility of money declines, then the expected
marginal utility of extra one thousand rupees to him which is depicted by the rectangle CDFE is less
than the extra marginal utility of the previous one thousand (i.e., 20th thousand) rupees which is
measured by the rectangle

Michael Jordan Vs James
Has anyone ever asked you, who is better Michael Jordan or LeBron James? and you do not know
what to say because, in your eyes, they are of equal talent. The statistical evidence and statements
from players around the league will show who truly the better player is. The common argument made
between the two is that Michael Jordan has six championship rings and LeBron James only has two.
Jordan never lost in a finals and James has lost four. Jordan never had to play in a game seven. Those
are all valid reason on why Michael Jordan is better than LeBron James but let s take a deeper look
into each player s career to show the things people don t look at to prove Jordan was the better player.
First, is the offensive side of the game. According ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jordan never was shy in making it known he wanted the ball when the game is on the line. Even
though LeBron has hit his fair share of game winners or go ahead baskets he has passed up multiple
shots at the end of the game to give a teammate that shot. Maybe he does not have the same killer
instinct or maybe he just does not have the confidence. Either way he shies away from the ball when
the game is on the line. Jordan played a more strategical game while James was usually the bigger
person in his matchups and just put his head down and went to the basket. Jordan also has played an
infamous game while being sick known as the flu game . This game was a in the middle of the 1997
NBA Finals while the series was tied up at two games. (Zach Harper) He went out and scored thirty
five points helping his team to take a game lead on the Jazz. (Zach Harper) James on the other hand
came out of the first game of the 2014 NBA finals with a thigh cramp. He left the game early in the
fourth quarter but then returned to hit a quick basket to put the Heat with in two points and five
minutes left to play. (Royce Young) After the basket he immediately called to the bench for help to be
carried off the court. The team then crumbled and lost the game fifteen points. (Royce Young) This
game set the tone for the series and LeBron s team, Miami Heat, then went to lose the

Language And Sexism In Language
Language plays an important role in society. In large extent it is a mirror of it while at the same time it
functions as means of constructing and maintaining that society. As a phenomenon of society,
language reflects all the perspectives of human society. Sexism in language has been a controversial
topic in sociolinguists since its inception. In this chapter, a historical overview will be made and a
definition of sexist language will be provided.
Sexism in language exists when language devalues members of a certain gender. Sexist language has
many definitions but for the sake of this essay the following definition will be used: [a statement] is
sexist if its use constitutes, promotes or exploits an unfair or irrelevant or impertinent distinction
between the sexes (Vetterling Braggin 1981:3).
Over the years there have been many concerns about gender and language which can be traced to
linguistics and to feminist theory. As a research field it developed side by side with the second wave of
feminism during the 1960s and 1970s, despite the fact that gender and language have been a debatable
issue for a long time. Around that time many articles and books were written which addressed two
questions; the essence and importance of gender bias in language and of gender differences in
language use. As Lakoff ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Women s secondary social status being reflected in language was strongly endorsed by Lakoff (1973,
1975). According to this mirror model, positive words like strong, intelligent, sexually active,
independent and negative one just reflected negative attitudes towards women in society (Stanley,
1977). The issue was whether language just reflected men s power or whether it also feeds into it.
According to many feminists, language establishes and nourishes negative beliefs towards women and
their secondary social status besides the fact that it also reflects men s

Gun Control Portrayal Analysis
Gun control has been debated in American History for decades yet it still persists today. We need to
take a step back as a nation and examine the driving force behind gun control and gun violence in
America. This is becoming a serious problem, because every mass shooting takes more lives. The
government continues to sit at a standstill with regard to gun control. The Republicans have no desire
to restrict Americans second amendment right to bear arms. However, Democrats don t intend to take
away an American s right, they seek to limit and remove high caliber guns from the market.
Americans are on different sides when it comes to gun control, but there are those who try to push
their opinions in different forms. American culture is and always has been represented through
political cartoons. They can say a lot about the illustrator s viewpoints and how they are representative
of America through color and context. The political cartoon I chose was on gun control or the lack
thereof. The cartoon is of a man standing behind a counter of a store called GOP GUNS and GORE
and the sign says that this store is opened 24/7. The man behind the counter is handing another man a
gun with a black shirt that says kill. The salesman is saying, You re on the federal watchlist. But we
still want you to have this. The man is standing behind a sign that says, Terrorists, please form single
line. There are men that stand on said line. All around the store there are signs on the wall

Competitive Sports Persuasive Essay
While many people believe that competitive sports should be banned from schools and from kids in
general, my belief is that they have a largely outweighing positive impact. There are a few reasons that
I believe so, the first of which is that they help unfit and obese children to begin living a healthy
lifestyle, and also motivates them to do so. Another reason I think competitive sports should be
allowed among kids is that they make you more confident and highers your self esteem. Thirdly, I
believe so because with all of the work that the kids are doing at school, they need some way of
having fun with their friends, and in my opinion, one of the best ways to do that is by playing a
competitive sport. Competitive sports should be available to children to play.
Today, over 17% of American children are obese, and when competitive sports come into play,
children start getting motivated to lose weight and eat healthier, especially when their friends are
participating in the sport with them. However, a lot of the time, children that aren t highly skilled get
criticised by their teammates and coaches, but most of the time, that only make them want to prove
themselves further, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Have fun. Enjoy the game. Most schools in the U.S. have a school day that last six to eight hours, and
students come home, tired, and don t have a chance to get active the rest of the day, so, competitive
sports are the way to go. Dr. Gibson continues to mention that, If you have trouble getting to the gym,
there may be more incentive to show up and play if you know your coaches or teammates depend on
you. When friends get together on a team and play a game with another group of friends, it s much
more fun than, say, going to the gym. Plus, it s a much healthier option than sitting at home all day
watching TV or playing video games. Competitive sports are meant for us to enjoy, so let s

(FFC), a publicly traded commercial bank, invests in a variety of securities in order to enhance returns greater than interest paid on bank deposits and other liabilities. The primary investments of FFC are collateralized debt obligation, mortgage backed securities, auction rate securities, equity securities in nonpublic companies, interest rate swaps, and a fuel swap for gasoline. Also, as of the measurement date, there is lack of recent and relevant transactions. Thus, the fair value measurement of this CDO should be classified as Level 3. By analyzing the market changes, FFC determined that the CDO s market was not active and there has been a significant decrease in the volume and level of activity. FFC used an income approach valuation technique which is present value technique to make measurement. Because this approach can maximize the use of relevant observable inputs and minimizes the use of unobservable inputs to reflect the fair value more representatively. Instrument 2 Mortgage Backed Security The fair value measurement of the Mortgage Backed Security investment shall be categorized within Level 2 of the fair value hierarchy. These inputs included quoted prices in active markets for similar MBSs with insignificant adjustments for differences between the MBS held by FFC and similar securities. In Q4 of 2012, the prices for transactions didn t reduce the relevant to the fair value measurement. • 3. Comparing Hobbe s and Locke s Theories on Nature Two books that I am going to be drawing information from for my paper are Hobbes Leviathan and Locke s Two Treatises of Government. This essay will be focusing on the differences between Hobbes and Locke s ideas on the state of nature. One of the biggest, and in my opinion most important points that makes Hobbes different from Locke is his belief that the state of nature is equal to the state of war. Thomas Hobbes was an English philosopher, who lived between 1588 and 1679. He witnessed multiple events throughout his life that later led him to write his book Leviathan, in 1651 once the war had ended. Hobbes witnessed the English Civil War (1642 1651), the interregnum period of England starting in 1649, and the hardest of them ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Hobbes PAGE NUMBER) After that Hobbes goes on to say, The life of man is solitary, poore, nasty, brutish, and short. (Hobbes) He argues that nothing is unjust in the state of nature. He believes that everyone has the right to do anything he/she wants because in the state of nature, there is no right or wrong and there is no law; everyone can do everything and nothing can be unjust. He says that Where there is no common power, no law; where no law, no injustice. (Hobbes) So all in all with Hobbes, he believes that all people are equal, therefore no power over the others in the state can be established. Everyone is the enemy to everyone else, therefore, no on can secure himself/herself, there is no property, and nothing is unjust. So overall, Hobbes state of nature is very pessimistic and is not a place to survive. Locke s idea of the state of nature is that everyone is equal to everyone. He states that, the state of nature is also the state of equality, wherein all the power and jurisdiction is reciprocal, no one having more than another.. (Locke) Locke however, does not think that this leads the people to war. He thinks that the state of nature is NOT equal to the state of war, but there is a chance of it becoming the state of war. He says that the person who committed the crime against a certain person puts himself in the state of war with that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some similarities still remain through the evolution of marketing merchandise, but many differences can be seen in more recent ads. The Palmolive soap company s advertisements from the 1900s exemplify the issue of sexism that took place in that time period. High and low angle shots can be a extremely effective technique if filmed correctly. Using these techniques can create more dramatic, intense scenes that might not be as effective if using different angle shots. Consider the scene where Karen lingers above Henry with a gun pointing at his head. This is a good example of how low angle and high angle shots work alongside each other. For instance, in the high angle shot of Karen, she is in the position of dominance. While the gun helps, the angle shows Karen above Henry not only in a physical manner but visually as well. Because of the angle Scorsese uses, Karen appears to have total dominance and control over the situation while reducing Henry s power that he has established throughout the film. On the other hand, Henry is viewed from a low angle shot with the gun pointed at his end. The position of the low camera angle shows Henry in a helpless, defenseless manner with no clear positive outcome. The angle portrays Karen as a big, overpowering presence as Henry is viewed as scared and vulnerable. What made them so great was their knowledge that they received from the Greeks and their ability to grow from what they learned. The Romans did not start off with a dictator, they had elected people to power. In the early years of the republic of Rome, this allowed them to grow. Starting off in the middle of Italy and eventually conquering all territories around the Mediterranean Sea. There are several factors that made Rome great, and their stability and longevity as a power house is worth talking about When talking about the Roman Empire and what made them great, it s important to talk about the Roman army. The Roman army was a very ferocious army, and that had much to do with their training regime. One had to be very fit in order to go through the harsh training, and honestly, failure was no option considering there would be punishments dealt out for failure. The new recruits would support the front line of the army. By putting the new recruits at the front of the line. • 7. Identity Theory Of Social Class Statement of the Problem Identity is a powerful force that shapes the way individuals interact with the world (Burke Reitzes, 1981). As a result, scholars have devoted much time toward understanding how identities such as gender, race, and sexual orientation influence the human condition (Farr, Forssell, Patterson, 2010; Kerr Multon, 2015; Smith, Bowman, Hsu, 2007). However, among this growing body of literature, the study of social class as an identity is relatively scarce (Ostrove Cole, 2003). Rather than examining social class as an identity, many scholars have instead chosen to treat it as a demographic variable (Aries, 2008; Aries Berman, 2013; Lubrano, 2004; Mantsios, 2007; Park Denson, 2013). Perhaps this has occurred because social class is such an elusive concept to describe (Lareau, 2008; Ostrove Cole, 2003). Identity theory is a theoretical framework that posits that individuals have many different identities that intersect, such as social class, race, and gender (Burke Tully, 1977; Michalski Helmig, 2008; Stryker, 1968; Stryker, 1987; Stryker, 2008). However, identity theory also acknowledges that these varying identities tend to exist hierarchically (Stryker Burke, 2000). Therefore, identities that are more central to a person s sense of self are more salient. That is, salient identities tend to be higher on a person s salience hierarchy than other identities. For example, a person may identify as a heterosexual woman, an African American, a Protestant, and a mother. However, if after considering all of these identities, she were to indicate that her identity of being a mother was the most important to her sense of self, and then researchers could infer that her mother identity would be set highest on her salience ... • 8. How the Concept of Diversity Rises with Globalization Introduction Diversity is generally defined as acknowledging, understanding, accepting, valuing and celebrating differences among people with respect to age, class, ethnicity, gender, physical and mental ability, race, sexual orientation, spiritual practice, and public assistance status (Etsy,et al. 1995). The idea of diversity emerged when globalisation came into the picture in 1990 91 (Bhatia, 2008). As globalization began to affect organisations, there was a coverage of workplace from diverse countries, cultures, values, and styles that presented tremendous opportunities as well as challenges (Bhatia, 2008). Therefore, it is preferred to respect, understand and value cultural differences in an organisation instead of trying to change them. Through those difference, management has to practice and learn to adapt to the life of the diverse groups. The task of managing diversity is to create a comfortable environment for all employees to work in so that they can be effective in their jobs. Many years ago, people decided they would find a way to govern America. They formed the U.S. Constitution, a form of government like no other by the people, of the people, and for the people. By using outcast protagonists and strained family relationships, Tim Burton emphasizes that society is always going to look down on strangeness, but having a strong family relationship can help build confidence. Through the films Big Fish and Alice in Wonderland, Tim Burton conveys how being an outcast can affect your future. In Big Fish, Edward Bloom decides to leave the town of Ashton with a giant, whom he befriended, named Karl. He then comes across 2 paths and decides to take the one that was much older and more run down than the other one. Finally, he discovers a town named Spectre, a place where nobody leaves because it is so perfect. Edward decides that he must leave because he doesn t fit in with everyone that is there. Before leaving Edward says, Now there comes a point where a reasonable man will swallow his pride and admit that he has made a terrible mistake. The truth is, I was never a reasonable man. Leaving Spectre illustrated that Edward wasn t like normal people and it was made clear by just listening to his stories. Even his story telling made him abnormal in a sense because he was the only one telling these outrageous stories. • 26. Essay on Berkeley s Idealism Berkeley s Idealism In this essay I shall give the historical background to Berkeley s Idealism and then offer an argument for Idealism and suggest how an idealist could defend his theory against common objections and criticisms. Bishop George Berkeley s Idealism or Immaterialism is the theory that the physical world exists only in the experiences minds have of it. Berkeley s Idealism restricts minds to God, human beings, animals and whatever other spirits there may commonly thought to be, and says that everything else the intrinsically non mental exists only as features of the experience of these minds. Although this would initially seem to be a bizarre view, if we look at the science and philosophy of the seventeenth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Further, not only are these worlds different qualitatively, but they are located in different realms. If we accept that the things of which we are immediately aware possess secondary qualities and that these secondary qualities exist only in the mind , then what we are aware of are, ideas in the mind , not objects in the external world. Therefore, although these ideas of which we are aware can be held to represent, and in terms of primary qualities, resemble, objects in the world, they also constitute a veil of perception which stands between the perceiver and the external world. From this we can conclude that the external world, as investigated by science, is different from the experiential or phenomenal realm. One of the important things we must be clear about when taking about Idealism is the term idea itself. As used by Berkeley and Locke the term idea does not have its normal sense. We tend to think of ideas as things that are thought, and indeed ideas are considered to be close to concepts. John Locke, however, defined an idea as whatever is the object of the understanding when a man thinks and he included sensations and sensory images amongst ideas. By adopting the term idea for all mental objects Locke declared his intent to assimilate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The total revenue (TR) to total cost (TC) approach relies on the fact that profit equals revenue minus that cost and focuses on maximizing the greatest difference between TR and TC. Total Revenue (TR): Is the income made from the sales of a given product. (McConnell., 2011) This total does not take include the cost of producing the product. To calculate the TR of a product, you must first multiply the sales price of the widget by the quantity sold. TR = Sales Price * Quantity Sold Total Cost (TC): The sum of fixed cost and variable cost at each level of output. (McConnell., 2011) TC = TFC + TVC (Total cost = Total Fixed Cost + Total Variable Cost) Graphically speaking the total revenue curve rises, but at a decreasing rate the curve turns into more of a horizontal line. Ultimately, total revenue begins to decrease. a2. The marginal revenue (MR) to marginal cost (MC) approach uses marginal analysis by comparing (MR) and (MC). Marginal Cost (MC): The change in total cost as the output level changes one unit. (McConnell., 2011) Marginal Revenue (MR): The change in total revenue from the sale of one additional level of output. (McConnell., 2011) MR = (change in total revenue) / (change in quantity/output) or MR = ∆TR / ∆Q Since Company A is a price taker, the sale of each additional widget adds to total revenue the same amount that is equal to the selling price. • 32. Assembling In The Iliad Ethan Medley English 2332 877 Professor Brooks 28 September 2017 Assembling in The Iliad (Holding councils of war or holding assemblies) Every great war in history has been determined, to some extent, by the powerful strategies executed by one party of the war. These strategies , most of the time, are not the brainchild of one individual, but more or less a group of people collaborating toward one strategy effective enough to turn the tides of battle. The most effective way for important leaders to voice their opinions for their next endeavor is achieved through the use of assemblies. Assemblies were very important to the armies in the Trojan War, as both sides had great power, meaning that cunning strategy would be the winning factor for one of the parties involved in the Trojan War. However, assemblies held during the Trojan War were more one sided toward the authoritative figures rather than a true collaboration between leaders and wise men. These assemblies follow a simple pattern: a leader calls out to the army to form an assembly when he sees it fit; then, the leaders and wise men then collaborate and voice their opinions on the matter at hand; and finally, the figure with the highest authority in the assembly decides what to do next as a result of the assembly. The assembly begins with an important leader calling for one when he sees it fit to form one. Christians in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries intended to convert Jews and Muslims through kind words and religious teachings from the Bible. Also, even after individuals were converted, Christians did not always fully trust their motivations, and believed they would revert into their old religions. While Marian miracles did help alleviate these tensions, thousands of vicious acts were committed against Jews and Muslims during this time period. In this essay, I am going to examine the idea of conversion from the Christian perspective, and how Christians were able to tempt Jews and Muslims to convert. The common argument made between the two is that Michael Jordan has six championship rings and LeBron James only has two. Jordan never lost in a finals and James has lost four. Jordan never had to play in a game seven. First, is the offensive side of the game. According ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jordan never was shy in making it known he wanted the ball when the game is on the line. Even though LeBron has hit his fair share of game winners or go ahead baskets he has passed up multiple shots at the end of the game to give a teammate that shot. Maybe he does not have the same killer instinct or maybe he just does not have the confidence. Either way he shies away from the ball when the game is on the line. Jordan played a more strategical game while James was usually the bigger person in his matchups and just put his head down and went to the basket. Jordan also has played an infamous game while being sick known as the flu game . This game was a in the middle of the 1997 NBA Finals while the series was tied up at two games. (Zach Harper) He went out and scored thirty five points helping his team to take a game lead on the Jazz. (Zach Harper) James on the other hand came out of the first game of the 2014 NBA finals with a thigh cramp. He left the game early in the fourth quarter but then returned to hit a quick basket to put the Heat with in two points and five minutes left to play. • 45. Language And Sexism In Language Language plays an important role in society. In large extent it is a mirror of it while at the same time it functions as means of constructing and maintaining that society. As a phenomenon of society, language reflects all the perspectives of human society. Sexism in language has been a controversial topic in sociolinguists since its inception. In this chapter, a historical overview will be made and a definition of sexist language will be provided. Sexism in language exists when language devalues members of a certain gender. Sexist language has many definitions but for the sake of this essay the following definition will be used: [a statement] is sexist if its use constitutes, promotes or exploits an unfair or irrelevant or impertinent distinction between the sexes (Vetterling Braggin 1981:3). Over the years there have been many concerns about gender and language which can be traced to linguistics and to feminist theory. As a research field it developed side by side with the second wave of feminism during the 1960s and 1970s, despite the fact that gender and language have been a debatable issue for a long time. Around that time many articles and books were written which addressed two questions; the essence and importance of gender bias in language and of gender differences in language use. As Lakoff ... According to this mirror model, positive words like strong, intelligent, sexually active, independent and negative one just reflected negative attitudes towards women in society (Stanley, 1977). The issue was whether language just reflected men s power or whether it also feeds into it. According to many feminists, language establishes and nourishes negative beliefs towards women and their secondary social status besides the fact that it also reflects men s ... • 46. Gun Control Portrayal Analysis Gun control has been debated in American History for decades yet it still persists today. We need to take a step back as a nation and examine the driving force behind gun control and gun violence in America. This is becoming a serious problem, because every mass shooting takes more lives. The government continues to sit at a standstill with regard to gun control. The Republicans have no desire to restrict Americans second amendment right to bear arms. However, Democrats don t intend to take away an American s right, they seek to limit and remove high caliber guns from the market. Americans are on different sides when it comes to gun control, but there are those who try to push their opinions in different forms. American culture is and always has been represented through political cartoons. They can say a lot about the illustrator s viewpoints and how they are representative of America through color and context. The political cartoon I chose was on gun control or the lack thereof. The cartoon is of a man standing behind a counter of a store called GOP GUNS and GORE and the sign says that this store is opened 24/7. The man behind the counter is handing another man a gun with a black shirt that says kill. The salesman is saying, You re on the federal watchlist. But we still want you to have this. The man is standing behind a sign that says, Terrorists, please form single line. There are men that stand on said line. All around the store there are signs on the wall ... • 48. Competitive Sports Persuasive Essay While many people believe that competitive sports should be banned from schools and from kids in general, my belief is that they have a largely outweighing positive impact. There are a few reasons that I believe so, the first of which is that they help unfit and obese children to begin living a healthy lifestyle, and also motivates them to do so. Another reason I think competitive sports should be allowed among kids is that they make you more confident and highers your self esteem. Thirdly, I believe so because with all of the work that the kids are doing at school, they need some way of having fun with their friends, and in my opinion, one of the best ways to do that is by playing a competitive sport. Competitive sports should be available to children to play. Today, over 17% of American children are obese, and when competitive sports come into play, children start getting motivated to lose weight and eat healthier, especially when their friends are participating in the sport with them. However, a lot of the time, children that aren t highly skilled get criticised by their teammates and coaches, but most of the time, that only make them want to prove themselves further, and ... Most schools in the U.S. have a school day that last six to eight hours, and students come home, tired, and don t have a chance to get active the rest of the day, so, competitive sports are the way to go. Dr. Gibson continues to mention that, If you have trouble getting to the gym, there may be more incentive to show up and play if you know your coaches or teammates depend on you. When friends get together on a team and play a game with another group of friends, it s much more fun than, say, going to the gym. Plus, it s a much healthier option than sitting at home all day watching TV or playing video games. Competitive sports are meant for us to enjoy, so let s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
