- A CC license has three layers, top-down; we have the legal code for lawyers which is the most important, the human-readable deed for creators and reusers, and the machine-readable code for webpages as an example.
- There are four license elements as we see on this slide; from left-to-right; BY which means that reusers must let users know that you created the original work, SA which means that reausers must use the same licensing terms as you, the creator of the original work, we will understand this more in the next slide, next we have NC which means that reusers cannot use your work for commercial purposes, and finally we have ND which means that reusers have to use your original work as is, no changes, no variations on it.
- In this slide we see the four cc license elements being used in cc licenses; (1) CC BY is the license that gives reusers the most freedom, allowing them to go as far as build on your work or create a new work based on yours, and all they have to do is give you credit as the original creator of the work they are sharing (2) Now that you understand BY, adding SA to it means that reusers have to use the same cc license that you’re using, that’s any of the 6 listed here (3) Adding NC to BY means that reusers cannot use your work for commercial purposes (4) Adding NC and SA to BY means that reusers cannot use your work for commercial purposes and have to use the same license that you used, again that’s any of the 6 listed here (5) Adding ND to BY is restrictive because reusers have to use your work as is that means that they cannot build upon your work or create something new based on it (6) Adding NC to BY and ND means that not only are reusers not allowed to build upon your work or create something new based on it, but they cannot use it for commercial purposes.
- There two cc public domain tools; if you create a work that you want to dedicate to the public domain you may license it as CC0 1.0 Universal, if find a work that’s already in the public domain you may use the Public Domain Mark 1.0 No Copyright so that when resuers come across it they know that the work in question is in the public domain.
