The Comparison and Contrast of Anne Sexton and Sylvia Plath The two poems, And One for My
Dame by Anne Sexton and Daddy by Sylvia Plath, both explore similar themes through the use of
literary elements such as structure, tone and symbolism. Structures in each poem are alike with length
but differ with the actual form. The tone Plath conveys is negative one while Sexton s is more neutral.
The symbolism in Daddy was also negative with symbols of the devil but Sexton used a nursery
rhyme as a symbol. The connotations of these elements reflect the image the daughters had of their

The tone associated with suicide and bad communication is not positive because these are not happy
things and consequently, with Plath mentioning these, the poem takes on a dark tone which reflects
her relationship with her father. On the other hand, Sexton creates a tone that is much lighter by using
words that have neutral or positive connotations. Her choice of diction does not hint either way
whether her relationship with her father was good or bad, it seems to stay neutral which reflects her
objective tone throughout the poem. She begins to introduce him as a born salesman in line 1 and a
born talker in line 4, which at most, infers that he was a charismatic person (1,4). Sexton goes on to
list everything he was in line 15 stating he was a peddler, a hawker, a merchant and an Indian Chief
(15). By these descriptions her father does not appear to be out of the ordinary. He was just a traveler,
committed to his work and not much else. The way she describes him also seems to be observational
so possibly her relationship with him was distanced and unattached. Therefore, the tone echoes the
theme that the relationship she had with her father because their relationship was disconnected and
that was the emotion provoked as she remembered him. In addition to structure and tone, the authors

to have a gender re assignment but in the later parts of the casting, it was Eddie Redmayne who took

The Cat In The Hat: A Story of Chaos and Order
The Cat In The Hat by Dr. Seuss, pseudonym of Theodor Seuss Geisel, tells a story of two children at
home on a rainy day alone, being visited by the Cat in the Hat and the turmoil that he causes. The Cat
In The Hat is clearly Geisel s most famous book, written in 1956 and published in 1957, considered a
children s classic today. It was The Cat In The Hat where Dr. Seuss jubilantly breaks the barriers of
the basal reader s simplistic language and pedestrian artwork (MacDonald 10). In The Cat In The Hat,
Geisel uses this childish language and comical pictures as well as an interesting story and fun
characters to not only create a successful children s book but to deliver a subtle political message of
rebellion against authority.
The simplicity of the vocabulary and the sentence structure in The Cat In The Hat makes it easy for
almost anyone to read and enjoy. In fact, many children learn to read today studying Dr. Seuss books.
Virginia M. Reid, author of the article by the National Council of Teachers of English titled Weaning
Books, refers to The Cat In The Hat as a baby food type of book for young children (8). It is these
books that can get children excited about reading. Geisel uses repetition, poetic meter and rhyme to
make the story flow, encouraging the reader to read it out loud. For example when the Cat In The Hat
appears at the beginning of the story, he says I know it is wet, And the sun is not sunny. But we can
have Lots of good fun that is funny! (Seuss 7). The words are simple and lively, immediately getting
your attention. The use of the exclamation mark at the end of the sentence also cannot be a mistake.
Geisel uses punctuation throughout the book for emphasis and amusement. The Cat in the Hat asks the
children, Why do you sit there like that? almost mimicking what the reader is thinking (Seuss 6).
Geisel has even gone so far to create a rhythm as one reads the story like poetry. It is this simple
language that gives The Cat In The Hat its pleasure to the reader that runs parallel but separate to its
entertaining illustrations.

Many philosophers use pure mathematics and/or mathematical truths as a basis for their philosophical
claims. Saying that beliefs and concepts are possible because of mathematics is possible due to the
unchanging nature of the subject. Mathematics is known to be an absolute truth that is not doubted,
allowing it act as a fixed truth for new ideas. However, what would life and philosophy be like if we
did not have a basis of pure mathematics and/or mathematical truths to rely on?
Descartes based almost all of his claims on the fact that mathematics, was what he called the most
certain truth (Descartes). Without that basis of mathematics, many of his claims of what does and does
not exist would have no meaning. Descartes claims that because mathematics exists as something
clear and certain, it must be possible for other things to exist in this same manner. He uses this
argument to defend more conceptual and philosophical beliefs like his belief in God. Descartes says I
no less find the idea of a God in my consciousness, that is the idea of a being supremely perfect, than
that of any figure or number (Descartes). When analyzing this quote, Descartes is saying that he finds
the idea of God just as plausible as that of the reliable figures and numbers that are present in
mathematics. However, if mathematics wasn t plausible, would that mean that God is henceforth
