Low vision
• Low vision - the best corrected visual acuity in the better eye less
than 6/18 and/or visual field less than 20 degree from the point of
fixation.
• Blindness – the best corrected visual acuity in the better eye less
than 3/60 and/or visual field less than 10 degree from the point of
fixation.
Difficulties dealt…
• Inability to recognize distance objects and faces
•Watching TV
•Seeing black board (for students)
• Problems writing/ completing paperwork
•Computer tasks / Mobile tasks
• Difficulty in mobility and navigation
•Glare problems
Most common conditions seen in the clinic
• Congenital cataract / Aphakia
• Retinitis Pigmentosa
• Albinism
• Diabetic retinopathy
• Age related macular degeneration
• Heredomacular degeneration (eg: Stargardt’s disease)
• Glaucoma
• Nystagmus
• Optic nerve problems (eg: Optic atrophy)
Low Vision Assessment
•History
•Visual Acuity
•Refraction
•Contrast Sensitivity

•Additional test(Cover test,
EOM etc)
Low vision devices
• LVD enable people with LV to join in their everyday activities
• Assist in promoting independent living
• LVDs enhance residual visual function
• There are two main types of low vision devices used for low
vision people:
• Optical devices
• Non-optical devices
