Malcolm Gladwell Complexity And The Ten Thousand Hour Rule...
Malcolm Gladwell and the Ten Thousand Hour Rule When someone is passionate about something, it
becomes their talent or hobby. If they want to pursue that and make it more than a talent or specialty,
they might make it their career. One talent that can easily be turned into a career is writing. There are a
countless amount people who are passionate about writing and become authors or writers. An author,
in particular who is excellent at writing and great at constructing solid arguments, is Malcolm
Gladwell. In Complexity and the Ten Thousand Hour Rule , author Malcolm Gladwell constructs his
argument that in cognitively demanding fields there are no naturals, by using anecdotes, quoting
experts, and providing statistics.
Malcolm Gladwell supports his claim that in cognitively demanding fields there are no naturals, by
writing interesting anecdotes that show examples. For example, the article contains an anecdote in
talking about how Mozart s earliest works were not outstanding; his earliest masterwork was created
when he was twenty one years old, showing he had already been practicing for ten years and he had to
practice to create his masterwork. Gladwell argues that even Mozart was not a natural. According to
Gladwell s article, he shares a story about the Beatles and how they played eight hours every day for
two hundred seventy nights over the course of a year and a half. This evidence shows that they
practiced long hours, and when they got to the United States they

Demographic Profile for France, 1985 and 2012
Fertility Section
Introduction
France s low fertility is in line with its status as a developed country. Its citizens are well aware of the
value of family planning and contraceptives. France s fertility rates have remained relatively stable
between 1985 and 2012 and have also stayed close to replacement levels. The most noticeable changes
have been the extending of the peak fertility years from the 25 29 age range to the 25 35 age range.
The main factors that affect fertility in France are the high availability of contraceptives and the social
norms governing family planning.
Fertility Structure In 1985 there are relatively few births to women below the age of 15, with only 66
live births recorded. The age specific fertility rate for women below the age of 15 is .03 live births per
1000 women. For ages 15 19 the age specific fertility rate is much higher at 11.55 live births per 1000
women. The age specific fertility rate continues to rise in the 20 24 age range, with 97.18 live births
per 1000 women. As shown in Figure 1, fertility peaks in the 25 29 age range with 142.51 live births
per 1000 women. In the 30 34 age range we begin to see a rapid decline in fertility, with only 78.67
live births per 1000 women. It drops further with 29.75 live births per 1000 women aged 35 39 and
6.15 live births per 1000 women aged 40 44. For the age ranges 45 49 and 50 54 the combined age

Gender Role Portrayal And The Disney Princesses
At the beginning of this class, I had very little confidence in my ability to convey my ideas through
writing. Now that I have reached the end of this course, I have learned many techniques and skills that
have helped me with my various writing projects throughout the semester as well as my final research
project. The first course outcome that I really worked toward throughout the semester is being able to
engage with texts critically and to incorporate the ideas from those texts into my own work. From
essentially day one of this course there were assigned readings of Giroux s The Mouse that Roared.
After each reading, there would be an analysis of the dense text during the following day of class. In
addition to Giroux, there were also several ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My first real try at making academic arguments was rather effective, my Pinocchio archival research
project garnered much positive feedback and even went on to compete in the Save Our Stories digital
archives competition. I successfully used my primary research on the illustration and on Disney s
Pinocchio movie to support all the arguments that I made in the essay. On the other hand, my next
attempt at making a strong academic argument, which was about gender role portrayal in Disney, was
a total flop. I made a reasonable argument, but I had neglected to provide substantial supporting
evidence to back up my claim. Thankfully, the feedback that I received on that post allowed me to see
what I had done incorrectly, and afterward I went back through the article and found the information
that would have supported my argument. Another one of my attempts at making an argument was in
the New Orleans Tumblr post. Facing an issue similar to the gender roles post, I could summarize the
experiences of the trip very well; however, this time my issue was that I did not fully develop my
argument. The supporting information that I needed was present, but I only partially followed through
the comparison that I was making, which was the argument in this case. Finally, there is my research
project s argument. The argument I make in my research

Effects Of Corruption On Women
Through the analysis of the different aspects of corruption at different levels of society, it can be
argued that the differential treatment of women and their lack of empowerment (2) is the cause of the
greater effect that corrupt systems have on women (1). 1. The impact of corruption on women: the
greater effect of corrupt systems on women Because corrupt systems cause women to suffer from
gender specific forms of corruption (a) and difficulties in accessing public services (b), women seem
to be disproportionately affected by corruption. a. The women specific practices of corruption While
research often focus on the different probability to pay bribes for men and women, a strong emphasis
should be placed on how men and women are differently impacted by corruption. As an abuse of
entrusted power in exchange for a private gain, corruption seems to accentuate those differences,
especially when it takes gender specific forms. Those are disproportionately experienced by women
when the currency for bribes is of a sexual nature. For instance, sexual extortion, or sextortion, is
defined as the situation where sexual favors are used as a currency for corrupt practices. This
manifestation of extortion can involve diverse types of sexual assault against women, from sexual
harassment to forced sex. When inflicted by public officials in exchange for the performance of a duty,
it seem to fall within the definition of abuse of power and influence of the UNCAC, yet sexual
extortion is

Shakespeare s Language in his Works Essay
Shakespeare s plays are full of references to what is now obscure classical myth, falconry, astrology,
or the theory of humors that were thought to determine personality within so many of his characters (?
S??Far?). Shakespeare wrote about themes and events we can relate to even now nearly 500 years
later. He wrote about us you and me, our friends, our families, the people we work with and play with
and argue with and go to bed with, the characters we see on the evening news and elect to public
office often times comparisons are often scary (Seder iii). Shakespeare also liked to make fun of many
of his characters. His plays show that he can be funny and has a humorous personality, often times
even in his tragedies in which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He uses many terms that are unusual in our time as well as countless examples of figurative language.
Shakespeare uses blank verse, oxymorons, and strong vocabulary in order to give insight and meaning
to the written word.. Shakespeare uses blank verse throughout his entire play writing time. Blank
verse is a form of poetry in which lines have ten syllables, have five stresses, and no rhyme scheme. ?
The plays were mostly written in blank that is, unrhymed verse (except for rhymed couplets, often
used to close our scenes or sequences)? (?So Near and Yet So Far?). The rhythm he used is iambic
pentameter which is meter a type of pattern found in poetry. Iambic pentameter is an unstressed sound
followed by a stressed syllable. ?Blank verse was a common dramatic vehicle at the time and for
centuries later? it is still used it today(?So Near and Yet So Far?). Shakespeare also introduced a new
type of blank verse. Shakespeare often wrote his sonnets in this same manner. One may find a
rhyming couplet, but he mainly uses iambic pentameter in every line of his poetry as well as his
drama. Along with the sound or rhythm of the play, Shakespeare?s vocabulary makes his plays more
intriguing and very expressive. He introduced thousands of words into our language. It is hard for
people today to understand some of the things Shakespeare said, because ?many words have fallen out
of use, and in others the meaning has migrated, often a considerable distance?

The Positive Characteristics Of Jackie Chan
The positive personality traits that I can identify on Jackie Chan is persistent. For example, when
Jackie Chan is young, his father would wake him up early in the morning to practice Kung Fu. His
father believed that learning Kung Fu would help to build Jackie Chan s character and teaching him to
be patience, strength and courage. Due to the occupation forced his father to leave his son, his father
decided to let Jackie Chan to stay in Hong Kong and send him to China Drama Academy. During
Jackie Chan s time at China Drama Academy, he learn martial arts, singing and acting skills. Students

How Did Nick Ut Use Napalm In North Vietnam
On the 8th of June 1972, photographer Nick Ut took an iconic photo of a group of young kids running
away helplessly as soldiers escorted them out of the danger zone, (the danger zone was an explosion
of napalm that burnt and basically disintegrates everything). Early that day Nick heard that there was
fighting happening in North Vietnam near the occupied village of Trang Bang. He stopped on the
nearby bridge with other soldiers and journalists. It was around 1pm when a south Vietnamese plane
dipped down aligned with the highway and dropped the napalm bomb on the village, which turned out
to be an accident. As thick black smoke filled the air, emerging from it was multiple civilians crying

The Pharos Lighthouse: Seventh Wonder of the Ancient World
The buildings of early Egypt were so impressive that two became known as wonders of the ancient
world. The first was the Great Pyramid of Giza which was built during Egypt s earliest thriving years.
Despite being considerably older, this pyramid dwarfs the seventh wonder of the ancient world the
Pharos Lighthouse of Alexandria which was constructed over 2000 years later. Built by one of the last
rulers of ancient Egypt, Ptolemy I Sorter, the Pharos Lighthouse of Alexandria sadly has been almost
entirely lost, due to what is thought to have been the work of earthquakes. Even so, the Pharos

From a poet named Poseidippos of Pella, who lived in Alexandria during the third century BC, we
learn that this statue almost certainly depicted Zeus the Savior, and he may have been accompanied by
Poseidon, the lord of the waves. However, others have suggested that the two statues depicted the
Dioscuri, who were the twin sons of Zeus and Leda and protectors of seafarers. In fact, a gem which
has recently been examined suggests that in fact the beacon on the lighthouse may have been open and

The Importance Of The Relevance Of The Data
The importance of the relevance of the data has been identified since the very early work in context
aware ubiquitous systems. Despite of its importance few works have been carried out to quantify the
QoC and ensure the quality of the information on which the decisions and actions of contextaware
systems are based. Moreover, many decision support techniques are insufficient to address the runtime
uncertainty in the context information as they do not assess the QoC in an end to end fashion. We
formulate the related work into two parts: 1) QoC attributes and modeling aspects
2) Runtime decision support addressing uncertainty
A. QoC attributes and modeling aspects
QoC attributes and their modeling comes into play to capture the uncertainties in context data. A well
designed model is a key assessor to the quality of the context. Krause and Hochstatter [5] discussed
the challenges in modeling the
QoC and its usage. Several QoC models emerged but most of the QoC models were not properly
quantified according to the
QoC requirements. Castro et al. [6] investigated the accuracy of a location sensing service was
compromised. Ranganathan et al. [7] used predicate and probabilistic logic to assign confidence
values from 0 to 1 for every type of context. Dey et al. [1] suggested that mediation with the user can
help to reduce the uncertainty. QoC is modeled as meta data where additional information about the
quality of the context source is utilized to capture the uncertainty. Krause and

John Burgoyne Research Paper
John Burgoyne was born February 24, 1722 and died on August 4, 1792. John s well known nickname
was Gentleman Johnny. His parents were John Burgoyne and Anne Marie Burgoyne. He was also the
father of 4 children. Burgoyne received his education at Westminster and then went into the military.
He was remembered for his defeat by superior American forces in the Saratoga campaign of 1777. He
got married to the daughter of Lord Derby. Burgoyne was elected to the House of Commons in 1761.
He was assigned to Canada in 1776 as a major general. THE AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY
WAR: Burgoyne s force captured Fort Ticonderoga, New York, on July 6, 1777 but, after reaching the
Hudson River, was fought to a standstill by a much larger army commanded successively by General
Philip Schuylar and General Horatio Gates, who were brilliantly assisted by Brigadier General
Benedict Arnold. General Howe chose to fight Pennsylvania but left the men with no food and no
medical help. St. Leger was defeated at Oriskany, New York and headed west. Burgoyne surrendered

resin as the matrix composite, and a variety of fibres such as carbon, glass as the reinforcement.
Polymer matrix materials are also called a resin solution. There are many producer used it to produces

phenol, epoxy, Polyether Ether Ketene (PEEK), and others.
Polymer Composite Material contains two broad types, which is thermosets and thermoplastics.
Thermosets Thermosets are usually formed from low viscosity liquids that become cross linked by
combination with a catalyst or by the application of some external form of energy, such as heat or
radiation such as UV light and other types. The earliest composites were made with a phenolic
thermosetting matrix. Then the epoxides followed, then the ureas, the unsaturated polyesters, and the
silicons, and now there are considerably more. From the usage standpoint, the most important
materials are the first three which is phenolic, the epoxies and the unsaturated

Reflections on my Plant Engineering Summer Internship at United Parcel Service
Introduction
My Plant Engineering (PE) internship experience at United Parcel Service (UPS) allowed me to utilize
all that I have learned at Florida Polytechnic University and apply it to real world work experience.
Thus expanding upon my previous knowledge while simultaneously allowing me to grow in new ways
that cannot be taught in the classroom. Interning at UPS has helped highlight my fortes and flaws as
not only an engineering student, but also as a young adult entering the professional world. Through
firsthand daily coaching and mentoring from senior engineers, I discovered that communication is the
key to being successful as an individual and as a team. Encouraging social cognizance provides a
necessary balance within a company.
Getting the Job An INROADS alumni told me about an organization called INROADS and
encouraged me to go online and apply for their paid summer internship program. INROADS is a non
profit company that focuses on developing and placing talented underserved youth in business and
industry, and prepares them for corporate and community leadership (INROADS, 2011). The
organization is currently expanding their STEM program. So, my Florida Polytechnic education along
with their internship program was a great match. The program is highly selective with a rigorous
application process. Of more than 11,000 applicants just over 1,000 earn internships

With direct reference to at least one film, how did Hollywood address the paranoid, hysterical political

The Cold War began in 1947 between the USSR and the USA. After World War II, both countries
began to distrust each other, as they knew the amount of power each country had in terms of nuclear
weapons. Not only did they distrust each other, but they lacked a mutual understanding of each other s
culture. The USA believed in capitalism and the USSR believed in communism. This lack of mutual
understanding caused mass paranoia within America as they feared that communists would infiltrate
their society. This hysteria was known as the Red Scare which lead to a range of actions that had a

Who Is Wang Lung s Life In The Good Earth

The Supreme Being of the North
During the early 1900s in China, it was difficult for people of the lower class to rise out of poverty. It
was a time where the rich got richer, while the poor got poorer. Even so, in the novel, The Good Earth,
when Wang Lung is thrown into penury, he manages to rise to become prosperous. He owes his
accomplishments to the land because as a farmer, it s the land that continues to feed his family and
brings him wealth. The land itself is not a character in The Good Earth, but even so, it plays a major
role in Wang Lung s life. The land is described as a supreme being in the novel because it brings Wang
Lung success and affluence, purifies him and controls his life. Firstly for Wang Lung, as farmer, the
land is like a supreme being because it controls his wealth. It is what keeps the family from starving
and grants them luxuries. The silver he earns is so precious ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Depending on the mood of the land, Wang Lung s life fluctuates. Namely, when the land is in a good
mood, Wang Lung s life is put in great prosperity. The fertile soil gives him great harvest and allows
his family to live in comfort. But when the land is in a bad mood, it s an utterly different story. For
example, when a great drought falls on Wang Lung s village, ... the fields, although Wang Lung
cultivated them desperately, dried and cracked ... when they found nothing coming from the soil or the
sky for them, ceased their growing and stood motionless... (70). This shows that the land controls
Wang Lung life because this drought causes Wang Lung and his family to move to the South. In
conclusion, the land could make Wang Lung live a resplendent life or half starved. This shows that in
the novel, the land is like a supreme being because it affects a man s life so severely that it is much
like an immortal

Environmental Problems
Environmental Problems in American History
The environment has been in trouble for a long time. Americans have been dealing with air pollution,
overpopulation, natural resource depletion, pesticide, water pollution and public health issues. These
issues are causing environmental problems and had a negative effect on the environment. Most of
these crises started in the early 19th century. The government got involved and started creating laws to
protect the environment and the public.
Air Pollution is one of the issues of concern, as the Industry develop and grow, smoke was one of the
endures that American had to deal with, this was created from manufacturing jobs and to help improve
the living standards (Merchant, 120). By the 1920, where coal was used for domestic heating, people
with rain barrels on their roofs found the water contaminated with soot; city trees began dying
(Merchant, 120). Breathing in polluted air was causing human health issues (Merchant, 120). The
smoke and soot irritated the nose, throat, and lungs, giving rise to, or exacerbating a multitude of
ailments ranging from the common cold to asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, black lung disease,
tuberculosis, diphtheria, and typhoid fever (Merchant, 120). The poor people are mostly the ones that
suffer from air pollution, they live and worked in the inner cities where the disease was mostly active
(Merchant, 120). Smoke was the number one pollution in the towns where coal burning industries
were located.

When she finally woke up, she saw a big bird flying above her. She said to the bird, What a beautiful

History Of The Writs Of Assistance Essay
When discussing the Writs of Assistance, we must first understand why they were created and why
James Otis believed they were infringing upon citizens basic rights. Writs of Assistance were first
authorized by English Parliament and King Charles II in 1660, which later was issued by Exchequer
of Pleas, a court in England that dealt with cases surrounding the principles of natural and common
law. Writs of Assistance were used in both English and colonial governments at the time, and were
created to grant law enforcement officials the right to search homes suspected of holding smuggled
goods without the need for a warrant. A Writ of Assistance was commonly called a writ of restitution
or a writ of possession depending on the need for the writ, whether it be a eviction or a search for
goods. During the time that Charles II served as king of england, the legality of Writ of Assistance was
questioned in 1761, during the attempted renewal of the law. Although the Revolutionary war did not
start until 1775, the Writ of Assistance law that allowed general warrants in the colonies played a

BTK stands for blind, torture, and kill. Soon after each incident, he sent anonymous letters to the
police and taunting them by offering knowledge of the killings. Dennis Rader was reported to have
tortured a Puerto Rican family, the Oteros in their home (Vigliotti, 2015). In court, he testified that

the word homicide with home a side along with her address and name. He was also known to be a
mentally deficient person. He had a very low IQ and failed all his classes in high school (Vigliotti,

Examples Of Imperialism In Cry The Beloved Country
The most compelling story of fighting flagrant oppression and injustice occurred during the twentieth
century in South Africa. The symbol of Nelson Mandela being released from prison in the late nineties
after decades of confinement represents the roaring social prejudice, and on an even more prominent
scale, the economic discrimination of the native South African people during the apartheid era. The
social and economic hierarchy of South Africa, one which placed blacks at the bottom, traces back to
the colonization period of the country. As a time of warfare which exacerbated a widely held sense of
divine entitlement, the colonization era provided the Dutch and English settlers with the power to
claim South Africa for the country s location and resources in order to assert their global dominance.
The desire to remain an international influence resulted in the settlers implementing several different
systems of oppression, some of which still have lasting effects in South Africa, even in the present
day. The identity of South Africa eroded as the Europeans remained in the country. Mainly through the
Anglo Boer Wars, the sense of unity and culture held by Africans was dismantled as Europeans
continued to encroach onto South African soil and separate themselves from black Africans to portray
their culture as the international authority.
In the novel Cry, The Beloved Country, the main character, Stephen Kumalo, alludes to a once united

The Great Gatsby Time Analysis
The Great Gatsby took place in the fictitious town of West Egg. Gatsby, a mysterious millionaire who
throws parties that he does not participate in is at the center of this novel and later we find that the
reason he is throwing these parties is to get the attention of a woman named Daisy. Daisy and Gatsby
had met earlier on and had a relationship before he participated in WWI. When he came back Daisy
had already moved on and was married to Tom Buchanan. Now Gatsby still remains hopeful that he
can rekindle what they once had. Gatsby is unwilling to accept the past and persistently attempts to
recreate it. But the concept that underlies within this is time. Through this novel we see the concept of
time play out through the relationships ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the fact that Gatsby chooses to wear this shirt to tea with Daisy, it is apparent that he is trying to use

Airlines are known to take on contract employees such as cabin crew, ticketing and check in agents.
Variation in domestic foreign oil price
The time is not going well for airlines industry. It is suffering in a pity condition due to increase in
aviation turbine fuel (ATF). ATF accounts for 35 per cent of the total airline expenses. The price of
ATF is increased 3 times in last 3 years. Just in last 5 months it has increased by 65%. Interesting
thing is that in the market of Singapore Dubai, it is Rs.45 per liter but in India it has the 21% higher
price. First let s know why its price is higher.
In India the aviation companies have to spend more to purchase ATF. Airlines in India pay the most
for fuel when compared with other Asia Pacific hubs like Singapore, Hong Kong and Colombo,
mainly on account of higher tax rates. Aviation Turbine Fuel or jet fuel in Delhi, the city that houses
the nation s second busiest airport, costs USD 1,291 per kilolitre while the same in Singapore is sold
at USD 1,067 per kl. It costs USD 1,100 per kl in Hong Kong and USD 1,113 in Colombo. For
airlines, refueling cost in Delhi is 21.73 per cent higher than that in Singapore. Similarly, airlines in
India pay 14.82 per cent and 13.87 per cent more than what those in Colombo and Hong Kong pay
respectively.
Over the past four months, cost of jet fuel in Delhi has risen from USD 1,023 per kl in April to USD
1,291 per kl in August, a

II. What are some of the spin offs from each type of exploration?
A. NASA has given us many spin off technologies.
1. Small LED chips developed to grow plants in outer space are now used in pain treatment and
wound care, and space technology has been used to make cars more fuel efficient and more
aerodynamic, and the docking technology for the space station and shuttle missions is now used in
LASIK surgery.
B. The limited amount of undersea exploration has given us many incredible discoveries as well.
1. Many new pharmaceutical advancements have come from the ocean.
2. Anti fungal and anti bacterial compounds have been developed from marine ascidians, sponges, and
algae.
3. Anti cancer drugs and new antibiotics have been produced from Salinospera, which are small
microbes over 100 million years old found only in deep ocean sediment. Now understand that only
10% of the ocean floor has been explored and our seas and oceans cover 2/3 of our planet.

Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead Comparison
Reality is relative to each individual. Everyone will perceive reality differently prominently depending
on the upbringing, the environment of an individual, and changes throughout time as they become
more and more exposed to the world. In Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams reality is
explored more about discovering the big question of what is the meaning of life. Although in
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard, it focuses primarily on what is death. Yet
together both these novels conclude to a riveting theme of reality is an illusion and vice versa. Both
authors use satire to combine humor and intelligence to convey the message accordingly. In both
stories there are symbols that lead to a realization of the theme. In fact in both cases, they entail
beautiful aphorism for readers to enjoy the theme and the book as a whole. Therefore, through an
examination of the satire, symbolism and aphorism in In Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas
Adams and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard, it is evident that both the novel

time you flip the coin it is a separate chance completely meaning the streak is not a factor at all.

Innovation of Mobile Phone Payments
Innovation is a more effective and efficient way of performing tasks. It is not an invention but rather,
using a current model and simplifying it to enhance the overall experience of its users. Furthermore, it
can eliminate existing problems issues that the users are facing. As there are more than 6 billion
mobile subscriptions worldwide, countries all around the world are embracing mobile phone
payments. While developed countries are embracing this new technology, as mobile coverage and
connectivity rate is high, developed countries are also adopting the practice, as it does not only rely on
Internet access.
This essay will look at various methods of mobile phone payments and it s impact on both individuals
and the society.
Mobile phone payments allow consumers to pay for a wide range of goods and services using phones
instead of cash, credit/debit cards and cheques. One of the models for payment is by using Short
Message Service (SMS) or Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD). Consumers can send
payment requests via text messages that will be charged to their phone bill or online wallet. This mode
of payment does not require Internet access, which allows developing nations with poorer population
and inferior facilities to participate. An example would be the Nigerian mobile pay service, Paga.
Users are simply required to enter their identification number as well as the amount necessary.
Another mode of payment is the Mobile Web Payment where users access to a

him be the laugh of the crowd. I think Leper will eventually go back into the war but he night feel that
he currently needs to finish up a few things at Devon first. I find it interesting though how he goes to

Analysis Of Bloom s Original Cognitive Process
A group of educators collaborated to develop classifications of learning objectives for the purpose of
creating lessons and the evaluations to accompany them. They constructed objectives to reveal what
students would be able to perform according to the education and organized them in relation to their
level of difficulty. The outcome is extensively recognized as Bloom s taxonomy. However, there are
adaptations that have drawn from Bloom and his colleagues efforts such as those from Anderson, one
of Bloom s former students, as well as Stiggins (O Donnell, Reeve Smith, 2012). In Bloom s original
cognitive process there are six thinking skills and abilities that comprise of knowledge,
comprehension, application, analysis, evaluation, and synthesis. In Bloom s revised taxonomy,
modifications were made to the original version to deal with the drawbacks found in the previous
version. The improved framework now distinguishes from knowing what and knowing how or the
matter of thinking and the process utilized in problem solving (Anderson Krathwohl, 2001). Anderson
and his associates assert meaningful learning presents students with the knowledge and cognitive
means required for solving problems (Anderson Krathwohl, 2001). The revised version adapted by
Anderson and Krathwohl consists of remembering, understanding, applying, analysis, evaluation, and
creating (O Donnell, Reeve Smith, 2012). By utilizing these as an outline in creating questions and

The Patent Law Of Taiwan
This thesis is to address the possibility of adapting the patent law in Taiwan, compared with what is
done in India. These adjustments utilize the so called TRIPS flexibilities embodied in the TRIPS
Agreement (The Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights), as Annex 1C of
the Marrakesh Agreement establishing the World Trade Organization (hereinafter the WTO) which
came into effect in January, 1995. As a trade off between promoting knowledge diffusion and
exclusivity to use the knowledge, the patent system is part of the minimum standard established in the
course of the globalization of intellectual property right (IPR). The formation of TRIPS also
demonstrates that the strength of private sector and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because of the root of the intellectual property rights inevitably goes to the inherent public goods

strategy, and this would allow the technology free rider countries to become fair followers, as
Professor Reichman indicates. In this way, developing countries can make use of TRIPS flexibilities,
because wiggle room in fact exists in the TRIPS Agreement. For example, Brazil employs this idea in
constructing its compulsory license requirements in its copyright law; South Africa adopted a more
stringent patent protection than the TRIPS Agreement demands while incorporated a safeguard clause
to facilitate the use of essential drugs. Another good example of employing TRIPS flexibilities is the
patent law of India. Before the TRIPS Agreement was negotiated, India s patent law did not regard
pharmaceutical chemicals as subject matter of protection and India consequentially became one of
world s top generic drug producers. However, in order to comply with

Traditionally, independent dealerships utilize a far more centralized approach to customer level
decision making. These mom and pop dealerships acquired by Cervus were successfully converted
from a command and control style of management.
Inimitability and Substitutability
Cervus decentralized decision making model could be easily imitated. At first glance the model s
imitability appears to be a major barrier that is preventing a sustainable competitive advantage.
However, decentralization is not a new concept and was certainly not developed by Cervus. The true
value lies in Cervus ability to implement and execute the concept, which involves far more than
simply imitating a model or a process. Would be imitators must also invest the time necessary to
develop the experience and capability to implement the model effectively. Thus, Cervus
decentralization capabilities are actually quite difficult to imitate as they require a significant time
investment.
The organization of power within a corporation is a rigid dichotomy between centralization and
decentralization. Substitute strategies can exist anywhere along the spectrum whether they are
completely centralized, completely decentralized or somewhere in between. Though Cervus methods
are substitutable, centralized policies have not proven to be nearly as successful in maintaining

The Importance Of Heroes In Literature
Heroes are an essential part of literature they come in many shapes and sizes and are key to
encouraging readers to pursue greatness. For children who feel neglected, forgotten, and powerless
turning to literature can be their escape. To children a child hero is a representation of the things that
may be possible to an ordinary child. In Neil gaiman s novel Coraline goes face to face with the
beldam to rescue her parents adn to find her identity . While in JK Rowling s novel harry potter and
the philosopher s stone harry and his friends band together in a fight of good vs evil. A true child hero
stands in the face of adversity and overcomes the challenges thrown at them by adults, they serve as
role models providing children an escape from a powerless adult world, both novels going beyond
classical heroes; Coraline Jones and Harry potter are postmodern heroes.
Heroes like Harry and Coraline are role models to children who feel powerless and unimportant.
Heroes give children an opportunity to feel more like an adult: mature, in control, and in power. Harry
is an orphan child who has been pushed to believe he is less than ordinary and certainly not of any
value of or importance, But once he is a wizard he becomes a positive role model to children as
recognized by deborah duff who claims that child heroes demonstrate lessons for coping with bullies
or how to approach social awkwardness. Harry displays that good choices can be made in tough
situations (Duff, 25). This

Analysis of Vindication of the Rights for Women by Mary...
A wise man once said Man is only great when he acts from passion. When you hear the word passion,
the first thing that might come to your mind is something related to love, and you re not entirely
wrong. According to Merriam Webster s dictionary, passion is defined as a strong feeling of
enthusiasm or excitement for something or about doing something or a strong feeling (such as anger)
that causes you to act in a dangerous way. All in all, it is a strong feeling, be it happiness, sadness,
anger or liberality. You can be passionate about many things such as love, sports, food, or intimacy.

Throughout her manifesto, Wollstonecraft points out that if women were only taught to please men on
a daily basis, men would grow tired causing the women to cheat. She also points out renowned writers
such as Jean Jacques Rousseau. Ten years before this, Jean Jacques Rousseau had published his tell all
called Confessions. This was during the Romanticism period, a period where there was rejection of
rationality and reason while in favor of feelings. There was more emphasis on subjectivity, the way the
individual perceives their experience. From reading Vindication, you understand why Wollstonecraft
wrote this. She claims that Rousseau s view towards women were very double standard. He states that
Women are smaller compared to men, both in their physical frame and mental frame. So because of
that, they should all be submissive towards men. Thus, the prejudice of women being the weak and
sensitive sex prevails. Both men and women, live their lives believing that women are weak minded.
At an early age society teaches that a woman s mind is weaker than a man s mind, justifying it with
the fact that a woman s body is weaker than that of a man s. This conclusion seems fully plausible,
however if investigated further, one will find that that is not the case. A woman s mind is as fully
capable of reason as a man s mind. Wollstonecraft had two options to pick from. Either start a
revolution in regards to women rights and allowing them to be equal or to skillfully inject the

The only time wherein the United States became a war theater was during the American Civil War in

Corporate Tax And Corporate Income Tax
Introduction I believe that there should be corporate income tax, as it acts as a user fee for the special
privileges (Rosen, Ch 19) corporations receive. The corporate income tax is a separate tax on
corporate income, in which varies in a bracket between ten percent and thirty five percent. The
effective corporate income tax rate is estimated at thirty two percent, and eighteen percent for non
corporations. Workers compensation, labor expenses, interest payments, and depreciation are tax
deductible from taxable income. Since corporations sell stock to stockholders, those stockholders
purchased a certain percentage of the corporation. In turn, purchasing a portion of the corporate
liability. If a stockholder accumulates income within the corporation in which he holds stock shares,
he reduces his tax liability. Although the shareholder s additional income would eventually be taxed,
his stock will grow at the before tax rate of interest. This benefits the corporation and the shareholders,
as neither party holds the entire liability, nor do the shareholders pay debt if the corporation is not
generating profit. Corporate income tax also preserves the integrity of personal income tax. I believe
that there should be corporate income tax, as the lack there of could create potential opportunities for
personal tax avoidance (Rosen, Ch 19).

Commodity Fetishism and Its Impact on Contemporary Society...
What is commodity fetishism as defined by cultural and media theorists? Identify and analyse three
images that demonstrate the way commodity fetishism is impacting on contemporary society and
culture.
Commodities are defined as things that are bought and sold in a social system of exchange. (Sturken
Cartwright, 2009, p. 279 ) The concept of commodity culture is intricately allied with the idea that we
construct our identities through the consumer products that inhabit our lives (Sturken Cartwright 2009,
p. 279) The idea of a commodity culture has been described by media theorist Stuart Ewen as a
commodity self. He believes that we are constructed through our relationship with and use of
commodities in our everyday lives. Karl Marx ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only does it allow the development of a broader social context of devaluing labour, making it hard
for workers to take pride in their work but it also allows consumers to remain ignorant of working
conditions. (Sturken Cartwright 2009, p. 280) This image is an example of commodity fetishism
because it is essentially a process of mystification that not only empties commodities of the meaning
of their production but also fills them with new, appealing meaning. (Sturken Cartwright 2009, p. 279)
The process of making something seem more appealing is used to promote and sell the product.
Consumers purchase Calvin Klein jeans because they are a designer label and are promoted as being
fashionable and worn by celebrities. Consumers are not purchasing the Calvin Klein jeans because
they were mass produced in a different country or because of the people who produced them. This
example relates back to the Frankfurt school theory that commodities are hollowed out objects that
propagated a loss of identity and erode our sense of history. (Kaplan 2006, p. 105)
Image two is the front cover of a book. It shows chocolate and has been chosen as an example of
commodity fetishism. Chocolate is associated with desire and is a form of pleasure in people s lives.

Among all the characters of the novel The Shipping News, Quoyle endures the most powerful change
and provides the one of a kind strength that drives the story onward. He is the insecure protagonist of
the tale, whose self esteem is the feature that limits him the most. In the progress of his transition as a
character he not only spares himself, but his troubled family line as well. Quoyle s solitude and agony
in the beginning of the book almost extends throughout the whole story where we see him beat
himself to the ground with the hard put downs and mistreatment from others. A Flemish flake is a
spiral coil of one layer only. It is made on deck, so that it may be walked on if necessary. (Proulx 1)
This first quote of the story gives a brilliant narrative of the boneless person Quoyle is. Quoyle is a
powerful character who is unconfident, quiet, and an unloved person, who has been taught his whole
life that he is nothing short of a failure.
Quoyle is a man of few friends, and precedes a solitary and detached life in Mockingburg, New York.
Quoyle is chracterized by the author as a man who abstracted his life from the time (Proulx 11) He
falls in love, or so he thinks, to an unlikely equal called Petal, whom he ends up having an unfortunate
marriage with. She was with Quoyle out of pleasure and to use him for financial support. She cheated
on him repeatedly, and possessed no love for their two daughters, she sold them before running off
with a boyfriend and getting herself butchered in a car wreck in the process. In the author s vocabulary
of describing their unrighteous relationship, What he had was what he pretended (Proulx 14) Quoyle
is ruined notwithstanding the circumstance that she treated him like dirt and had no respect for him.
His whole world is astray after losing his terrible spouse and the recent deaths of his unloving parents
who anticipated him to arrange their funeral. Before he went, Quoyle s father went as far as to recite to
him how much of a disappointment he was. It is safe to say Quoyle was on his lowest of lows, that is
until his unpronounced Aunt Agnis Hamm reveals herself from out of the blue to take him to their
family s spot of origin, Killick Claw Newfoundland. It makes sense ,

One Man Two Guvnors, Womens Roles
Women s roles are often tokenistic in dramatic comedy. To what extent do you believe this to be the
case in relation to the play you are studying?
Some argue that women s roles are often tokenistic in dramatic comedy, since women often have
smaller or less important roles than male characters. This may apply to the female characters in One
Man, Two Guvnors depending on how you interpret the word tokenistic . The tokenism of a character
may be assessed in terms of the size and significance, or by analysing the stereotypes and complexity
of their characters.
In One Man, Two Guvnors , there are three female characters, the uneven ratio of women to men
perhaps suggest that the female roles within are less significant than male roles. ... Show more content

Nevertheless, a woman dressing up as man is nothing out of the ordinary. It was very common in
comedic plays for women to be playing a man s role and this was used to demonstrate the difference
in hierarchy between men and women.
The complexity of Rachel s character differs within the play. On the one hand, Rachel is portrayed in a
male disguise showing she has independence as she has taken matters into her own hands, her
successful manipulation through disguise perhaps demonstrating her intelligence and how easily
women can dupe men. This could also suggest that she is not acting according to the social norms for
women in the 60s demonstrating that she doesn t fear people s views of her although she is a woman.
She demonstrates her strength and independence as she takes matters into her own hands I ll take two
hundred in cash and acts in a violent way Rachel slaps Francis , portraying the growing power of
women. On the other hand, Bean could have done this to project the message that women cannot hold
any power without the help of a man. Although she has decided to solve her problem herself, she has
had to dress up as a man to do so, thus showing that women s roles are often tokenistic. The motive
behind her plan was also for a man illustrating the length a women will go for a man. Had Rachel not
dressed up as a man maybe she would not have gotten so far, her success in doing so

Essay On Mercato Italia
The Mercato Italia located in the outskirts of Rome in the Nomentano district seems to capture the
current feeling of Italy and its adaption toward the changing world, starting with what they have begun
to sell in their markets. The Mercato Italia is your average market with the typical items ranging from
fruits and vegetables to swordfish heads, but adding to the uniqueness is the additional items one can
buy when grocery shopping. Once seeing the outside of Mercato Italia I no longer felt as if I was
heading to your average market, rather to a mall with its distinct features that you would not normally
see in your neighborhood market. The amazing fact was though, that once inside it was just that; the
friendly, comforting, and typical market with the same faces you would see back home. I couldn t
believe that somehow this market was able to make itself unique but still have the essentials of what
makes a market, but little by little I began to see why this market looked like a mall. Like every
traditional market each space available is held by people that pay rent for ... Show more content on

And while I m at it I can go for a quick bite. but Mercato Italia seems to have these distinct items for
the consumers just in case they need them. Mercato Italia seems to have begun to understand that
times are changing and traditions sometimes change for the better, which greatly supports the
expansion for even more suggestions that can be established in future markets. The stands that I
mainly saw did not only offer items but their services as well, Tu bisogno un taglio di capelli? , La tua
madre non ha fiori? Perché no?! , and Il tuo bagno è sporco? Compra questo! and at the same time you
have the food merchants asking you that if your mother needs flowers than certainly she needs some
apples to go with

The Roman Empire
However, numerous aspects allowed the Byzantine Empire to stay in power for a 1000 years after the
end of the Roman Empire; primarily the emperors were focused on the political, culture and economic
affairs from top to bottom. This triangle strategy of the empire backed by a greater strategic
communication and well designed political warfare against their rivals enabled the empire to stay
stable and secure. There are also few other internal and external factors and advantages. Including
some great permanent resource such as Anatolia for workforce and Egypt for cash. The regional
stability was also a significant factor and the Persia, and the Islamic caliphates have not significantly
challenged the emperors. There was also some natural and geographic advantages, such as shorter
borders and few disputes over the land and boundaries. The active Macedonians military and the
Thema system militias were an essential factor in the security. But, the role of leadership should not be
ignored in the empire, and most of the Byzantine emperors were either smart or had the brightest
around them. Martine Luther s challenge of the Catholic Church s through written theses was mostly a
political warfare through existing means and tools. Of course, he is one of the most influential figures
in the history of West, his works even influenced eastern scholars and religious leaders. At the, while
the social media was not a top of discussions and any such technology has not existed, but he

Haber Process One World Essay
The Haber Process, also known as the Haber Bosch Process, was discovered in the first half of the
20th Century, by a man named Fritz Haber. The Haber could be considered to be a very high on
technological advance/discovery in the past 100 years. The world has had many mixed opinions on
Fritz Haber and his development of the Haber Process. The manufacture of Ammonia has a lot of
history and science behind it, it has impacted our history as well as our present day, mainly in our
environment. Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch, two German Chemists, developed the Haber Process, in the
early 1900s, as ammonia was very difficult to produce on a high ... Show more content on

Though, 80% of ammonia produced is used in agriculture for fertilizers (Ammonia, Wikipedia), it is
also used for refrigerant gas, to purify water supplies, and in the manufacturing of explosives, fabrics,
pesticides and many other chemicals (health.ny.gov). Ammonia is a in house hold cleaning supplies.
The cleaning solution for bigger projects, industrial use contains larger amounts of ammonia and will
cause irritation. There also have been some negative uses, thoughts, and effects of the Haber Process.
With the Haber Process, the nitrogen cycle is thrown off track, and it creates an imbalance, due to that
large amount of extraction from our atmosphere. To complete the process, there is a high fossil fuel
input, as you require 400 550oC and that uses a lot of energy. When ammonia enters the body, due to
breathing, it sometimes reacts with water to produce ammonium hydroxide. This is very corrosive
chemical and has been known to damage cells in the body that it comes in contact with. During World
War 1, the Germans took the research used by the German Chemists, to kill troops that were stuck in
trenches, with Ammonia poisoning. Every good thing comes with a side of bad effects, and Haber and
Bosch s discovery had almost a full serving of bad. Though we still use ammonia in our day to day
lives, as well has for industrial purposes, there are many ways that it has impacted us negatively.

Georg Cantor
Georg Cantor I. Georg Cantor Georg Cantor founded set theory and introduced the concept of infinite
numbers with his discovery of cardinal numbers. He also advanced the study of trigonometric series
and was the first to prove the nondenumerability of the real numbers. Georg Ferdinand Ludwig
Philipp Cantor was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, on March 3, 1845. His family stayed in Russia for
eleven years until the father s sickly health forced them to move to the more acceptable environment
of Frankfurt, Germany, the place where Georg would spend the rest of his life. Georg excelled in
mathematics. His father saw this gift and tried to push his son into the more profitable but less
challenging field of engineering. Georg was not at all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There simply is no biggest number. Is infinity a number? Is there anything bigger than infinity? How
about infinity plus one? What s infinity plus infinity? What about infinity times infinity? Children to
whom the concept of infinity is brand new, pose questions like this and don t usually get very
satisfactory answers. For adults, these questions don t seem to have very much bearing on daily life,
so their unsatisfactory answers don t seem to be a matter of concern. At the turn of the century Cantor
applied the tools of mathematical rigor and logical deduction to questions about infinity in search of
satisfactory answers. His conclusions are paradoxical to our everyday experience, yet they are
mathematically sound. The world of our everyday experience is finite. We can t exactly say where the
boundary line is, but beyond the finite, in the realm of the transfinite, things are different. Sets and Set
Theory Cantor is the founder of the branch of mathematics called Set Theory, which is at the
foundation of much of 20th century mathematics. At the heart of Set Theory is a hall of mirrors the
paradoxical infinity. Georg Cantor was known to have said, I see it, but I do not believe it, about one
of his proofs. The set is the mathematical object which Cantor scrutinized. He defined a set as any
collection of well distinguished and well defined objects

If they want to pursue that and make it more than a talent or specialty, they might make it their career. One talent that can easily be turned into a career is writing. There are a countless amount people who are passionate about writing and become authors or writers. An author, in particular who is excellent at writing and great at constructing solid arguments, is Malcolm Gladwell. In Complexity and the Ten Thousand Hour Rule , author Malcolm Gladwell constructs his argument that in cognitively demanding fields there are no naturals, by using anecdotes, quoting experts, and providing statistics. Malcolm Gladwell supports his claim that in cognitively demanding fields there are no naturals, by writing interesting anecdotes that show examples. For example, the article contains an anecdote in talking about how Mozart s earliest works were not outstanding; his earliest masterwork was created when he was twenty one years old, showing he had already been practicing for ten years and he had to practice to create his masterwork. Gladwell argues that even Mozart was not a natural. According to Gladwell s article, he shares a story about the Beatles and how they played eight hours every day for two hundred seventy nights over the course of a year and a half. This evidence shows that they practiced long hours, and when they got to the United States they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Demographic Profile Of France, 1985 And 2012 Ben Cooke March 17, 2015 SOCY 410 Dr. Deanna Gore Demographic Profile for France, 1985 and 2012 Fertility Section Introduction France s low fertility is in line with its status as a developed country. Its citizens are well aware of the value of family planning and contraceptives. France s fertility rates have remained relatively stable between 1985 and 2012 and have also stayed close to replacement levels. The most noticeable changes have been the extending of the peak fertility years from the 25 29 age range to the 25 35 age range. The main factors that affect fertility in France are the high availability of contraceptives and the social norms governing family planning. Fertility Structure In 1985 there are relatively few births to women below the age of 15, with only 66 live births recorded. The age specific fertility rate for women below the age of 15 is .03 live births per 1000 women. For ages 15 19 the age specific fertility rate is much higher at 11.55 live births per 1000 women. The age specific fertility rate continues to rise in the 20 24 age range, with 97.18 live births per 1000 women. As shown in Figure 1, fertility peaks in the 25 29 age range with 142.51 live births per 1000 women. In the 30 34 age range we begin to see a rapid decline in fertility, with only 78.67 live births per 1000 women. It drops further with 29.75 live births per 1000 women aged 35 39 and 6.15 live births per 1000 women aged 40 44. For the age ranges 45 49 and 50 54 the combined age ... Now that I have reached the end of this course, I have learned many techniques and skills that have helped me with my various writing projects throughout the semester as well as my final research project. The first course outcome that I really worked toward throughout the semester is being able to engage with texts critically and to incorporate the ideas from those texts into my own work. From essentially day one of this course there were assigned readings of Giroux s The Mouse that Roared. After each reading, there would be an analysis of the dense text during the following day of class. In addition to Giroux, there were also several ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My first real try at making academic arguments was rather effective, my Pinocchio archival research project garnered much positive feedback and even went on to compete in the Save Our Stories digital archives competition. I successfully used my primary research on the illustration and on Disney s Pinocchio movie to support all the arguments that I made in the essay. On the other hand, my next attempt at making a strong academic argument, which was about gender role portrayal in Disney, was a total flop. I made a reasonable argument, but I had neglected to provide substantial supporting evidence to back up my claim. Thankfully, the feedback that I received on that post allowed me to see what I had done incorrectly, and afterward I went back through the article and found the information that would have supported my argument. Another one of my attempts at making an argument was in the New Orleans Tumblr post. Facing an issue similar to the gender roles post, I could summarize the experiences of the trip very well; however, this time my issue was that I did not fully develop my argument. The supporting information that I needed was present, but I only partially followed through the comparison that I was making, which was the argument in this case. Finally, there is my research project s argument. The argument I make in my research ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Effects Of Corruption On Women Through the analysis of the different aspects of corruption at different levels of society, it can be argued that the differential treatment of women and their lack of empowerment (2) is the cause of the greater effect that corrupt systems have on women (1). 1. The impact of corruption on women: the greater effect of corrupt systems on women Because corrupt systems cause women to suffer from gender specific forms of corruption (a) and difficulties in accessing public services (b), women seem to be disproportionately affected by corruption. a. The women specific practices of corruption While research often focus on the different probability to pay bribes for men and women, a strong emphasis should be placed on how men and women are differently impacted by corruption. As an abuse of entrusted power in exchange for a private gain, corruption seems to accentuate those differences, especially when it takes gender specific forms. Those are disproportionately experienced by women when the currency for bribes is of a sexual nature. For instance, sexual extortion, or sextortion, is defined as the situation where sexual favors are used as a currency for corrupt practices. This manifestation of extortion can involve diverse types of sexual assault against women, from sexual harassment to forced sex. When inflicted by public officials in exchange for the performance of a duty, it seem to fall within the definition of abuse of power and influence of the UNCAC, yet sexual extortion is ... Despite of its importance few works have been carried out to quantify the QoC and ensure the quality of the information on which the decisions and actions of contextaware systems are based. Moreover, many decision support techniques are insufficient to address the runtime uncertainty in the context information as they do not assess the QoC in an end to end fashion. We formulate the related work into two parts: 1) QoC attributes and modeling aspects 2) Runtime decision support addressing uncertainty A. QoC attributes and modeling aspects QoC attributes and their modeling comes into play to capture the uncertainties in context data. A well designed model is a key assessor to the quality of the context. Krause and Hochstatter [5] discussed the challenges in modeling the QoC and its usage. Several QoC models emerged but most of the QoC models were not properly quantified according to the QoC requirements. Castro et al. [6] investigated the accuracy of a location sensing service was compromised. Ranganathan et al. [7] used predicate and probabilistic logic to assign confidence values from 0 to 1 for every type of context. Dey et al. [1] suggested that mediation with the user can help to reduce the uncertainty. History Of The Writs Of Assistance Essay When discussing the Writs of Assistance, we must first understand why they were created and why James Otis believed they were infringing upon citizens basic rights. Writs of Assistance were first authorized by English Parliament and King Charles II in 1660, which later was issued by Exchequer of Pleas, a court in England that dealt with cases surrounding the principles of natural and common law. Writs of Assistance were used in both English and colonial governments at the time, and were created to grant law enforcement officials the right to search homes suspected of holding smuggled goods without the need for a warrant. • 21. Examples Of Imperialism In Cry The Beloved Country The most compelling story of fighting flagrant oppression and injustice occurred during the twentieth century in South Africa. The symbol of Nelson Mandela being released from prison in the late nineties after decades of confinement represents the roaring social prejudice, and on an even more prominent scale, the economic discrimination of the native South African people during the apartheid era. The social and economic hierarchy of South Africa, one which placed blacks at the bottom, traces back to the colonization period of the country. As a time of warfare which exacerbated a widely held sense of divine entitlement, the colonization era provided the Dutch and English settlers with the power to claim South Africa for the country s location and resources in order to assert their global dominance. The desire to remain an international influence resulted in the settlers implementing several different systems of oppression, some of which still have lasting effects in South Africa, even in the present day. The identity of South Africa eroded as the Europeans remained in the country. Mainly through the Anglo Boer Wars, the sense of unity and culture held by Africans was dismantled as Europeans continued to encroach onto South African soil and separate themselves from black Africans to portray their culture as the international authority. In the novel Cry, The Beloved Country, the main character, Stephen Kumalo, alludes to a once united tribe of African people before the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

(Sturken Cartwright 2009, p. 280) This image is an example of commodity fetishism because it is essentially a process of mystification that not only empties commodities of the meaning of their production but also fills them with new, appealing meaning. (Sturken Cartwright 2009, p. 279) The process of making something seem more appealing is used to promote and sell the product. Consumers purchase Calvin Klein jeans because they are a designer label and are promoted as being fashionable and worn by celebrities. Consumers are not purchasing the Calvin Klein jeans because they were mass produced in a different country or because of the people who produced them. This example relates back to the Frankfurt school theory that commodities are hollowed out objects that propagated a loss of identity and erode our sense of history. (Kaplan 2006, p. 105) Image two is the front cover of a book. It shows chocolate and has been chosen as an example of commodity fetishism. Chocolate is associated with desire and is a form of pleasure in people s lives. Chocolate is also a popular gift to give loved ones for birthdays and special occasions. • 43. Character Analysis Of The Novel The Shipping News Among all the characters of the novel The Shipping News, Quoyle endures the most powerful change and provides the one of a kind strength that drives the story onward. He is the insecure protagonist of the tale, whose self esteem is the feature that limits him the most. In the progress of his transition as a character he not only spares himself, but his troubled family line as well. Quoyle s solitude and agony in the beginning of the book almost extends throughout the whole story where we see him beat himself to the ground with the hard put downs and mistreatment from others. A Flemish flake is a spiral coil of one layer only. It is made on deck, so that it may be walked on if necessary. (Proulx 1) This first quote of the story gives a brilliant narrative of the boneless person Quoyle is. Quoyle is a powerful character who is unconfident, quiet, and an unloved person, who has been taught his whole life that he is nothing short of a failure. Quoyle is a man of few friends, and precedes a solitary and detached life in Mockingburg, New York. Quoyle is chracterized by the author as a man who abstracted his life from the time (Proulx 11) He falls in love, or so he thinks, to an unlikely equal called Petal, whom he ends up having an unfortunate marriage with. She was with Quoyle out of pleasure and to use him for financial support. She cheated on him repeatedly, and possessed no love for their two daughters, she sold them before running off with a boyfriend and getting herself butchered in a car wreck in the process. In the author s vocabulary of describing their unrighteous relationship, What he had was what he pretended (Proulx 14) Quoyle is ruined notwithstanding the circumstance that she treated him like dirt and had no respect for him. His whole world is astray after losing his terrible spouse and the recent deaths of his unloving parents who anticipated him to arrange their funeral. Before he went, Quoyle s father went as far as to recite to him how much of a disappointment he was. It is safe to say Quoyle was on his lowest of lows, that is until his unpronounced Aunt Agnis Hamm reveals herself from out of the blue to take him to their family s spot of origin, Killick Claw Newfoundland. • 45. One Man Two Guvnors, Womens Roles Women s roles are often tokenistic in dramatic comedy. To what extent do you believe this to be the case in relation to the play you are studying? Some argue that women s roles are often tokenistic in dramatic comedy, since women often have smaller or less important roles than male characters. This may apply to the female characters in One Man, Two Guvnors depending on how you interpret the word tokenistic . The tokenism of a character may be assessed in terms of the size and significance, or by analysing the stereotypes and complexity of their characters. In One Man, Two Guvnors , there are three female characters, the uneven ratio of women to men perhaps suggest that the female roles within are less significant than male roles. ... It was very common in comedic plays for women to be playing a man s role and this was used to demonstrate the difference in hierarchy between men and women. The complexity of Rachel s character differs within the play. On the one hand, Rachel is portrayed in a male disguise showing she has independence as she has taken matters into her own hands, her successful manipulation through disguise perhaps demonstrating her intelligence and how easily women can dupe men. This could also suggest that she is not acting according to the social norms for women in the 60s demonstrating that she doesn t fear people s views of her although she is a woman. She demonstrates her strength and independence as she takes matters into her own hands I ll take two hundred in cash and acts in a violent way Rachel slaps Francis , portraying the growing power of women. On the other hand, Bean could have done this to project the message that women cannot hold any power without the help of a man. Although she has decided to solve her problem herself, she has had to dress up as a man to do so, thus showing that women s roles are often tokenistic. The motive behind her plan was also for a man illustrating the length a women will go for a man. Had Rachel not dressed up as a man maybe she would not have gotten so far, her success in doing so ... Essay On Mercato Italia The Mercato Italia located in the outskirts of Rome in the Nomentano district seems to capture the current feeling of Italy and its adaption toward the changing world, starting with what they have begun to sell in their markets. The Mercato Italia is your average market with the typical items ranging from fruits and vegetables to swordfish heads, but adding to the uniqueness is the additional items one can buy when grocery shopping. Once seeing the outside of Mercato Italia I no longer felt as if I was heading to your average market, rather to a mall with its distinct features that you would not normally see in your neighborhood market. The amazing fact was though, that once inside it was just that; the friendly, comforting, and typical market with the same faces you would see back home. I couldn t believe that somehow this market was able to make itself unique but still have the essentials of what makes a market, but little by little I began to see why this market looked like a mall. • 47. The Roman Empire However, numerous aspects allowed the Byzantine Empire to stay in power for a 1000 years after the end of the Roman Empire; primarily the emperors were focused on the political, culture and economic affairs from top to bottom. This triangle strategy of the empire backed by a greater strategic communication and well designed political warfare against their rivals enabled the empire to stay stable and secure. There are also few other internal and external factors and advantages. Including some great permanent resource such as Anatolia for workforce and Egypt for cash. The regional stability was also a significant factor and the Persia, and the Islamic caliphates have not significantly challenged the emperors. There was also some natural and geographic advantages, such as shorter borders and few disputes over the land and boundaries. The active Macedonians military and the Thema system militias were an essential factor in the security. But, the role of leadership should not be ignored in the empire, and most of the Byzantine emperors were either smart or had the brightest around them. Martine Luther s challenge of the Catholic Church s through written theses was mostly a political warfare through existing means and tools. Of course, he is one of the most influential figures in the history of West, his works even influenced eastern scholars and religious leaders. • 48. Haber Process Essay Tejas Gandesha Ms. Rajeev Science 10 Tuesday, October 24, 2017 Haber Process One World Essay The Haber Process, also known as the Haber Bosch Process, was discovered in the first half of the 20th Century, by a man named Fritz Haber. The Haber could be considered to be a very high on technological advance/discovery in the past 100 years. The world has had many mixed opinions on Fritz Haber and his development of the Haber Process. The manufacture of Ammonia has a lot of history and science behind it, it has impacted our history as well as our present day, mainly in our environment. Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch, two German Chemists, developed the Haber Process, in the early 1900s, as ammonia was very difficult to produce on a high ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Though, 80% of ammonia produced is used in agriculture for fertilizers (Ammonia, Wikipedia), it is also used for refrigerant gas, to purify water supplies, and in the manufacturing of explosives, fabrics, pesticides and many other chemicals (health.ny.gov). Ammonia is a in house hold cleaning supplies. The cleaning solution for bigger projects, industrial use contains larger amounts of ammonia and will cause irritation. There also have been some negative uses, thoughts, and effects of the Haber Process. With the Haber Process, the nitrogen cycle is thrown off track, and it creates an imbalance, due to that large amount of extraction from our atmosphere. To complete the process, there is a high fossil fuel input, as you require 400 550oC and that uses a lot of energy. When ammonia enters the body, due to breathing, it sometimes reacts with water to produce ammonium hydroxide. This is very corrosive chemical and has been known to damage cells in the body that it comes in contact with. During World War 1, the Germans took the research used by the German Chemists, to kill troops that were stuck in trenches, with Ammonia poisoning. Every good thing comes with a side of bad effects, and Haber and Bosch s discovery had almost a full serving of bad. Though we still use ammonia in our day to day lives, as well has for industrial purposes, there are many ways that it has impacted us negatively. One of the biggest subject that has ... • 49. Georg Cantor Georg Cantor I. Georg Cantor Georg Cantor founded set theory and introduced the concept of infinite numbers with his discovery of cardinal numbers. He also advanced the study of trigonometric series and was the first to prove the nondenumerability of the real numbers. Georg Ferdinand Ludwig Philipp Cantor was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, on March 3, 1845. His family stayed in Russia for eleven years until the father s sickly health forced them to move to the more acceptable environment of Frankfurt, Germany, the place where Georg would spend the rest of his life. Georg excelled in mathematics. His father saw this gift and tried to push his son into the more profitable but less challenging field of engineering. Georg was not at all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There simply is no biggest number. Is infinity a number? Is there anything bigger than infinity? How about infinity plus one? What s infinity plus infinity? What about infinity times infinity? Children to whom the concept of infinity is brand new, pose questions like this and don t usually get very satisfactory answers. For adults, these questions don t seem to have very much bearing on daily life, so their unsatisfactory answers don t seem to be a matter of concern. At the turn of the century Cantor applied the tools of mathematical rigor and logical deduction to questions about infinity in search of satisfactory answers. His conclusions are paradoxical to our everyday experience, yet they are mathematically sound. The world of our everyday experience is finite. We can t exactly say where the boundary line is, but beyond the finite, in the realm of the transfinite, things are different. Sets and Set Theory Cantor is the founder of the branch of mathematics called Set Theory, which is at the foundation of much of 20th century mathematics. At the heart of Set Theory is a hall of mirrors the paradoxical infinity. Georg Cantor was known to have said, I see it, but I do not believe it, about one of his proofs. The set is the mathematical object which Cantor scrutinized. He defined a set as any collection of well distinguished and well defined objects ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
