The small intestine lies between the stomach and large intestine. It receives bile and pancreatic juice to aid in digestion, and is the site where most absorption of nutrients occurs. It is very long, over 20 feet, to allow sufficient time for digestion and absorption. The small intestine has three parts - the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum - which progressively absorb nutrients. The large intestine is wider than the small intestine and absorbs water before waste is stored in the rectum and expelled through the anus.
