- Welcome! To the Career Developers Forum, Integrating Web 2.0 Technology in Your Job Search. My name is Leslie Camacho, a Career Counselor and Employment Coach for B&B Career Services, LLC, and I will be presenting this workshop. Can you tell me why you have come tonight? Stats: September 2009 NYSDOL US unemployment: 9.8 NYS unemployment: 8.0 NYC unemployment: 10.3 Private job loss: 3.5% In this workshop, participants will learn how to enhance their job search by integrating some of the most popular social networking tools such as Facebook , Twitter, and LinkedIn . This fun and interactive workshop will guide you through the basics of what it means to use Web 2.0 and social networking tools. Attendees will also learn how to integrate these tools into their current job search activities while learning how to best market oneself in this virtual world. Through the use of humor, real examples, and crash-storming sessions, you will leave this workshop with the confidence and knowledge to get ahead of the competition!

- What does this have to do with your job search? I know how to: Create a resume Find job postings Write a cover letter I’ve been able to find work before without this, so what’s the big deal? It’s about using technology so that your search is easier and you get greater results. It’s about NEVER having to rebuild connections even in bad economic times. It’s about tapping into the “hidden job market” It’s really all about career management.
- Three ways to conduct a job search. The Old Way: you answer job ads, no matter where you find them, you submit your application, and then you wait. And sometimes you wait, and wait, and wait. What are the positives about this? What are the negatives about this? New Way: you use technology via your social network to help you spread the word about the job you are seeking. What are the positives about this? What are the negatives about this? Ideal Way: people are clear what job you are looking for and, in time, they start telling you about jobs. Social networking tools create such an environment. What are the positives about this? What are the negatives about this? You can use technology or good old fashioned “staying connected” to do this, but the end results are the same. This doesn’t mean you should not have an updated resume, continue to apply to job ads, have a cover letter template, and follow up with job leads found in other ways, old or new.
- Before you begin, each of you need to make sure a few things are in place: Must have clear career goals. If you are not sure, how will others know especially on “paper”? Network effectively and smartly to grow your circle not scare them away. Think about how others will perceive you by the words you use, the images you post, and the comments you make? Choose tools that you feel will help you. Out of the 100s of sites, chose the top 3 for you. Crate a plan and stick to it. Example: this week I plan to connect with 2 new people or I plan to join an on-line professional group?
- Clear goals are to be communicated to others. You don’t want your efforts to turn into a game of telephone .
- How many ways have you networked? What’s your approach? Will you marry Me? Here’s a card. Now call me. Let’s get to know each other. What are the benefits and shortcoming of each one?
- Everyone here must have at least 5 people to start with. Once you have established a base, think how else you can grow your network. You previously listed a few ways each of you has networked in the past. Use those and add a few new ideas. Want to touch upon desperate vs. investment networking : Marry me, marry me now!!! Investments take time. You recall that I said that if you do this, work will always find you. This is how you start. Do this for 6 months and you will see your investments in the long run. If you are looking for work now, you can still be aggressive without being desperate. You will get better results with the latter approach, especially if you follow-up each and every time, without fail!
- There are many many social networking tools. I will review two of the four recommended. If time permits, I’ll cover more.
- These are the top three most will find the most helpful in your job search. Although everyone has their own preferences, the most professional social network is LinkedIn.
- Profile is how others will view and judge you. Each website will have a different style, formal vs. informal, but the purpose is the same. Communicate how you are to others. Some may feel more comfortable sharing more, while others will not. That’s up to you. Security Settings is related to that. Take time and look at these setting before you post. How will you network? What do you want to say? How much do you want to share? Image? Share your work? Share personal information? All goes back to what you want to say and how others will see you. This sets-up/starts your online presence.
- Can you see yourself doing this? Is this for you? Why is it for you? Why isn’t it? Take some time to have the groups process and discuss this.
- Thomas is looking for a job in the communications industry. He has applied on line, gone to employment agencies, and posted his resume on various popular job search sites. After months of looking, he hasn't been able to secure a job to meet his career goals. See how the group pulls together all the concepts (job search, marketing, networking, and strategy development) in this exercise. See how each person, as much as possible, will relate Thomas’ plan to themselves. Help them problem solve as needed Help them see the benefits within limitations
- If you choose for Thomas to use LinkedIn, an obvious choice, he would have found 1,548,633 folks within this field. Now that he has people to network, how will he do this?
