The Midway Crossings Project will improve pedestrian safety and the walking experience at crossings of the Midway on the University of Chicago campus. It will install LED lighting along sidewalks and walkways, widen sidewalks, add planter and tree buffers between sidewalks and streets, and install emergency phones and security cameras. The project aims to enhance safety and circulation, transform the pedestrian experience, increase safety and community in the area, and illuminate the crossings through the park. Construction will be complete in fall 2010.

3. As the University’s presence south of the Midway grows in both
population and scope of activities, the Midway Crossings project
will improve safety for members of the campus community and for
our neighbors. Undertaken in partnership with the Chicago Park
District and the Chicago Department of Transportation, Midway
Crossings will bring a number of improvements to Ellis Avenue and
Woodlawn Avenue where they cross the Midway.
Through these corridors, LED lights embedded in handrails and low
pathway markers will illuminate wider sidewalks. New light towers
will illuminate pedestrians and define the walkway. A combination
of trees, grass and concrete planters will provide a buffer between
pedestrians and cars. New E-phone pylons with security cameras
will be installed at strategic points to supplement the emergency
phones already in place.
When construction is complete this fall, the changes will provide
a safer, more appealing passage between two important parts of
campus. The Midway itself will become a more attractive destination.
And as first proposed in the Park District’s Midway Plaisance Master
Plan adopted by the community in 2000, the project will respect the
grandeur of this special landscape with a design that harkens
back to Frederick Law Olmsted’s concept of connective bridges.
