13. 2008 Helena Festival of the Book Boundarylines & Crossings October 9, 2008 Old Supreme Court Chambers, Montana State Capitol Building Michel Hogue earned a B.A. in History at Simon Fraser University, an M.A. in History at the University of Calgary, and Ph.D. in History at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. He has written and presented extensively on the history and culture of the Canadian-American borderlands.

He was Supervisor of the City of Toronto Archives, Calgary’s first City Archivist, and Chief Archivist of Calgary’s Glenbow Museum Archives. He is the author of Hope’s Last Home: Travels in Milk River Country and Arc of the Medicine Line: Drawing the 49th Parallel Across the High Plains West, 1872-1875.

16. 2008 Helena Festival of the Book Boundarylines & Crossings Dale Eisler received his BA in Political Science at the University of Saskatchewan, Regina Campus and MA in Political Science, Vermont College, Union Institute & University. Prior to joining the Canadian Federal Government, Mr. Eisler had an extensive career in journalism, including daily newspapers, weekly newsmagazines, syndicated opinion columns, radio and television. He was also a sessional lecturer in journalism at the University of Regina. In 1998, he was appointed Assistant Deputy Minister for Consultations and Communications with the Department of Finance in the Government of Canada. In 2004, he was appointed Assistant Secretary to Cabinet at the Privy Council Office, which was the most senior communications position in the Canadian Government. In 2006, Mr. Eisler was the recipient of the Saskatchewan Commemorative Medal in recognition of his contributions to the province and society. He is the author of two books, most recently False Expectations: Politics and the Pursuit of the Saskatchewan Myth , published by the University of Regina in 2006.

17. 2009 Helena Festival of the Book Women in Montana History September 25, 2009, Montana Historical Society Panel included Sarah Carter Sarah Carter is from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and she received her history degrees from the University of Saskatchewan and University of Manitoba. She taught history at the University of Calgary for 14 years and is now with the Department of History and Classics, and Faculty of Native Studies of the University of Alberta. Her book, Montana Women Homesteaders: A Field of One’s Own , was published by Farcountry Press.

18. 2006 Montana Festival of the Book September 28-30, 2006 Missoula Adolf Hungry Wolf is a prolific author of numerous books on railroading, history, nature and native cultures. With his family he has written over fifty books while homesteading in the Canadian Rockies. For thirty years he has studied the traditional ways of his wife’s tribe, the Blackfoot Confederacy, while home schooling four children.

High Plains Book Awards 2008 Best Fiction Book Award A Feast of Longing by Sarah Klassen Published by Coteau Press Acclaimed fiction writer, poet and editor Sarah Klassen was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1932 and currently resides there. Sarah holds a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Winnipeg. Aside from writing, she has taught English in the public school system in Winnipeg, and at summer institutes in Lithuania and Ukraine.

High Plains Book Awards 2007 Best Poetry Book Award Finalist Prairie Kaddish by Isa Milman Published by Coteau Books Winner of the 2005 Canadian Jewish Book Award, Milman is an artist, poet and occupational therapist. She was born in 1949 in Germany in a Displaced Persons Camp. She now lives in Victoria, B.C.

The Montana Center for the Book promotes Montana libraries, literature, and literacy, through the Letters About Literature national writing competition for young people, and through Humanities Montana's OpenBook program, One Book Montana , and the Montana Festival of the Book .
