• His full name was Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez-
• He was one of the most important painters of the Golden Age (1556-1659)
• He was the leading artist for King Philip IV
• An important artist during the contemporary Baroque Period
• His artwork was a model for realist and impressionist painters of this time
3. ARTWORK
• Velázquez’s most famous painting was “Las Meninas” (1656)
• He painted real scenes and realistic looking portraits.
• He was an individualistic artist of the contemporary Baroque period. In addition to
numerous renditions of scenes of historical and cultural significance, he painted
scores of portraits of the Spanish royal family, other notable European figures, and
commoners, culminating in the production of his masterpiece Las Meninas (1656).
