Based on molecular structure its divided by: linear (end-to-end, flexible, like PVC, nylon)  branched cross-linked (due to radiation, vulcanization, etc.) network (similar to highly cross-linked structures)

2. Fibers Forming Polymers
Fiber forming polymers are linear macromolecules that are usually
suitable for making man-made fibers.
The term "synthetic fiber" will be used to denote all man-made fibers
manufactured from non cellulosic raw materials.
Synthetic fibers are the result of extensive research by scientists to
improve on naturally occurring animal and plant fibers
Examples: Hydrophobic-polymer fibers like nylon and polyester are
often blended with cotton, viscose or wool

4. Essential Requirements of Fiber Forming Polymers
• Flexibility
• Molecular mass:The polymer mass must have a comparatively high
molecular mass.
• Configuration:The molecule must have the capacity to adopt an
extended configuration and state of mutual alignment.
• Crystallinity
• Orientation:A high degree of orientation of the molecules in the
polymer is a pre-requisite for producing good tensile strength
