2. Essential Understandings Discrimination against African Americans continued after Reconstruction. “Jim Crow” laws institutionalized a system of legal segregations. African Americans differed in their responses to discrimination and “Jim Crow.”
3. Vocabulary Racial segregation: separation of people based on race. “Jim Crow” laws: an institutional system of legal segregation. Plessy v. Ferguson: 1896 ruling by the Supreme Court that legalized “separate but equal” public facilities for African Americans and thus continued to make discrimination legal.
