The document summarizes an event about additive manufacturing for metals and ceramics. The event included presentations on selective laser melting of new materials for industrial applications, laser cladding material building in practice, electron beam melting and ceramic AM parts. Additional talks covered applications in mechanical engineering and a European approach for on-demand spare parts. The agenda also included lab visits and a reception.
3. An Introduction
EFRO-Raplab is a networking project set up to introduce Additive Manufacturing technologies in
companies (AM).
Aim of the project
The promotion & the introduction of a sustainable and ecological production in Flanders
through the implementation of Additive Manufacturing technologies.
Facts & figures
2 year duration, started 1 February 2010.
The project budget equals 631.202€ and is funded by EFRO, the Flemish government
and the project partners.
Funneling ideas towards concrete business models
The EFRO-Raplab project will put forward new and innovative business
models on Additive Manufacturing. This will be realized through virtual
factories that will be concretized using a funnel model. This model will turn
a number of ideas into some concrete business models.

5. Objectives of the Network
1. The promotion and introduction of a sustainable production in companies through the
implementation of Additive Manufacturing technologies. For the target group* the impact of
AM on the different manufacturing processes will be made more explicit.
2. The generation of new and innovative business models on Additive Manufacturing
This will be achieved by means of virtual factories which will be made more concrete
through a funnel model. This funnel model will transform a variety of ideas into a
number of business models.
3. The promotion of Rapid Manufacturing as a sustainable and ecological
technology
*Target Group
- Focus on Flemish companies from the technological industry
- About 400 companies (85% SME) are concerned, employing 87.000 people
