One of the major differences between Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 is user interaction. In its early days, the Web only offered information to users, with no way for them to interact with the website (one-way communication). Web 2.0 introduced two- and three-way communication by allowing users to not only interact with the website, but to also engage in conversation with one another. Social-networking websites made it possible for users to stay in touch at virtually no cost. This presentation will focus on the history of social networking, its advantages and disadvantages, and additional relevant information.

Social networking introduced three-way communication to Web users. Now, not only were users able to interact with the website, but they could also connect and engage in conversation with other users. This ability gave users the opportunity to add content, collaborate, and contribute to collective intelligence, all of which represent features that separate Web 2.0 from Web 1.0.

Dating sites are regarded by some as the first social networks because they allowed users to create profiles and contact other users. However, the first modern social network wasn’t launched until 1997. At that time, Six Degrees emerged, allowing users to add friends. Although Six Degrees was eventually shut down in 2001, it gave way to social networking as we know it today. The first successful social networking website that emerged after Six Degrees was Friendster, which still enjoys 60+ million visitors a month. (Chapman, 2009)
After the introduction of Friendster, other modern social-network sites quickly developed. Today, Facebook Twitter, and LinkedIn are the top three most-visited social networks. (eBizMBA, 2014.)
PCMag (2014) defines social networking as “[a] Web site that provides a venue for people to share their activities with family, friends and colleagues or to share their interest in a particular topic. Members create an online profile with biographical data, photos and any other information they choose to post. They communicate with each other by making their latest thoughts public in a blog-like format or via e-mail, instant messaging, voice or videoconferencing to selected members.” Popular social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Google+ have all of these components in common and utilize many of the same, or similar, features.
According to eBizMBA (2014), the five most-visited social networks are Facebook (900,000,000 visitors a month), Twitter (310,000,000 visitors a month), LinkedIn (255,000,000 visitors a month), Pinterest (250,000,000 visitors a month), and Google+ (120,000,000 visitors a month).
Since its launch, Facebook has added a myriad of features (and continues to do so regularly). Today, Facebook continues to offer the most feature-rich interface and it is not surprising that the social network also continues to enjoy the most attention and use. Although there are countless of features that Facebook employs today, below is a list of the most popular ones that are unique to this social network. (Diffen.com, n.d.)

Although Twitter is not as feature-rich as Facebook, individuals and business quickly adopted it when it first launched in 2006 due to its ease of use. Twitter is especially popular with businesses as it is a great avenue for quickly distributing company or industry news to a large audience. (Diffen.com, n.d.)

LinkedIn is different from other social networks. Specifically, it targets the user as a professional and its purpose is to help the user become connected with other professionals. LinkedIn allows you to see the connections of your connections, thus helping you quickly and efficiently locate professionals whose help you may need. And since your connections have connected with and endorsed them, you know they are trusted. LinkedIn also allows you to learn about new companies and to reconnect with colleagues and classmates. Social networking is important on many levels – from personal to professional to business. We’ll explore each in more detail in the following slides.
These are some of the reasons why individuals should consider creating a social-network account for personal use. This list is not all-inclusive, but it provides the major benefits of social networking.

Why is it important for professionals to use social media? Above are some of the reasons. Websites specifically designed to assist professionals, such as LinkedIn, are a great avenue for connecting with the right individuals and organizations. Having a large number of connections increases your chances of being noticed by potential employers and it gives you access to many professional contacts, events and opportunities. Building a strong profile with examples of your skills and work experience is key. (LinkedIn.com, 2013.)
Business owners can especially benefit from social-networking presence. Social networking is a great marketing tool and can significantly reduce the costs associated with promoting a business. Most social networks today offer advertising campaigns that cost much less than conventional methods, such as distributing flyers, running radio or television ads, etc. (Mikoluk, 2013.)

According to recent research, there is a correlation between social networking and civic participation. The research suggests that social networking provides new opportunities for individuals to participate and contribute, but is not conclusive as to whether civic participation has either positively or negatively impacted the quality of civic participation (Fenton, 2011; Hampton et al, 2011).

As beneficial as social networking websites are, there are some drawbacks. This slide examines the possible disadvantages that may come with using a social network. (SHRM.com, 2012.) Users are advised to use extra caution when providing personal information and interacting online.
In the grand scheme of things, social networking is a relatively new development, but it has already made a significant impact on the way we use the Web. Social networking has contributed to collective intelligence and has made communication fast, efficient, and inexpensive. Collaboration at a distance is almost becoming the norm, and more and more devices are becoming reliable platforms for utilizing social networks. Finding personal and professional connections is now easier and faster than ever, and so is the delivery of news and updates. Social networking has helped shape the Web into what it is today and will only continue to do so. As long as social networks are used wisely and carefully, this method of interaction will continue to improve the Web and make user interactions more and more efficient and seamless.
