Marty Cagan, Inspired: How To Create Products Customers
Love
- Co-founder of ProdPad - Co-founder of Mind the Product which consists of a community blog, monthly product focused meet ups called ProductTank in 13 cities, product camp LDN and Mind the Product conference - I've been doing product in one form or another for about 15 years now. My first product
- A company consists of three things customers, technology and business - Product manager sits in the middle like conductor of a symphony
- Product management & product managers are focused on ensuring that the right thing is built
- Core of product management - What is the value of solving the problem - Compelling solution - No customers? You have a target segment, do customer interviews etc
- Most solving for a known need - need to understand that problem & come up with a compelling solution & test
- Product management isn't project management - Its a non-linear cycle
- learnings impact requirements, roadmaps, priorities - Difference between waterfall and iterative is how quickly feedback can change things
- Roadmapping communicates areas of focus that will achieve the vision - Avoid dates on roadmaps - Multiple methods of prioritisation - All use same data * customer feedback * analytics * business objectives - Don't be driven by sales
- Look for trends in feedback & solve the underlying issue - MVF for real unknowns - minimise what you need to build to learn whether you have a compelling solution
- Cargo cult behaviour creeping in - PM is not formulaic
- Success comes from learning as fast as possible - Failure is becoming fetishised - The faster you learn the less failures you have to do so less resources used
- The faster you learn the faster you will reach the goal of a sustainable business
