2. The Republic of Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa. It is bordered on the east by
Kenya, on the north by Sudan, on the west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, on the
southwest by Rwanda, and on the south by Tanzania. The southern part of the country
includes a substantial portion of Lake Victoria, which is also bordered by Kenya and
Tanzania.
Uganda takes its name from the Buganda kingdom, which encompassed a portion of the
south of the country including the capital Kampala.
The people of Uganda were hunter-gatherers until 1,700 to 2,300 years ago, when Bantu-
speaking populations migrated to the southern parts of the country.Uganda gained
independence from Britain in 1962.
The official languages are English and Swahili, although multiple other languages are spoken
in the country.
The country is located on the East African plateau, averaging about 1,100 metres (3,609 ft)
above sea level, and this slopes very steadily downwards to the Sudanese Plain to the north.
However, much of the south is poorly drained, while the centre is dominated by Lake Kyoga,
which is also surrounded by extensive marshy areas. Uganda lies almost completely within
the Nile basin. The Victoria Nile drains from the lake into Lake Kyoga and thence into Lake
Albert on the Congolese border. It then runs northwards into Sudan. One small area on the
eastern edge of Uganda is drained by the Turkwel river, part of the internal drainage basin of
Lake Turkana.

1. Travel Times- From Ludhiana to Delhi distance is 354 km. From Ludhiana city to New Delhi I had
train reservation and from New Delhi Railway Station to New Delhi Airport I took bus as the
distance was about 20-22 km and bus takes 45 min.

6. It is not advisable to take a train in Uganda. Train are not having proper routes in Uganda. Therefore
taxies most preferred mode of transport for the tourists in Uganda. If you took train then you not able
to have a proper in each and every spot and it is not convinent.

Although it's often the case that there never seems to be a taxi around when we're in desperate need,

Akamba bus are mind numbingly slow. And here is a nice picture of yet another puncture
being repaired. They are one of the many bus companys that operate on the Kampala -
Nairobi route. If/when I do the trip again I think I'll be travelling with "Regional".
Scandanavia have freezing aircon, Noisy TV, and a smelly toilet on board and you have to
pay a lot more for the privallage so wont be travelling with them.
Akamaba Bus (Execitive service). Some buses take the Eldoret route and some go through
Kisumu.
If you are travelling straight through on the morning service you should reach Nairobi about
nightfall.
The border itself is fairly hassle free. Every one piles off the bus and queues up at customs
and immigration on the Ugandan side, get your exit stamp then walk across no-mans land to
the Kenyan side. You can get a visa at the border, a yellow fever vaccination certificate was
once a must but doesn't apear to be so now. Once you have got your passport stamped you
can board the bus again on the Kenyan side and continue on your journey.
The bus stops a few times along the route. First stop is a breif one at Mabira Forest where you
can buy roast chicken or gonja. Momey changers usually board the bus just before the border
or you can change money at the border itself. Once you enter Kenya there maybe time to buy
food, water and have a toilet break at the border if not the next stop will be in Kericho. The
last stop will be a couple of hours before you reach Nairobi at Nakuru.
A gateway Bus. You often hear how the conductors are rude, the buses are in bad condition, and that
the drivers are crazed miraa chewing mad men. But if it wasn't for Gateway bus a huge part of

8. Uganda especially the east and north would grind to a halt. They may not be the best but do provide
an invaluable service.
Local public bus for my trip to Jinja, which is only 76 km's far from Kampala. The return ticket is
very cheap.
Landmarks
Right at the other end of the Uganda Railway from Kampala lies one of the fastest growing
towns in Uganda – Kasese. Kasese is an exciting mix of nightlife, industrial developments,
and natural attractions. The most popular of the tourist attractions in Kasese are the Rwenzori
Mountains and the Queen Elizabeth National Park. These two tourist attractions are
instrumental in the growth of Kasese. The central and eastern part of the Rwenzori Mountains

9. has been open to tourism activities as a national park. This park is also considered as a
UNESCO World Heritage site for its abundant plant life and numerous water features.
Despite the dry plains of Kaseses equatorial location, the Rwenzori Mountains are ice-
capped. Three out of the five highest peaks in Africa – Mount Stanley, Mount Speke, and
Mount Baker, are all located within the Rwenzori Mountains National Park.
The Queen Elizabeth National Park, on the other hand, is considered to be one of the most
visited game reserves in the country. The national park covers an area close to 800 square
miles spread through three Ugandan districts. Water attractions bound the park’s perimeter
with Lake George at the northeastern portion, Lake Edward at the southwestern portion, and
the Kazinga Channel which connects the two water forms. The wildlife in this national park
come from species recovered from the Uganda-Tanzania War. Among these are elephants,
leopards, hippopotamuses, lions, and chimpanzees. The national park’s collection of wildlife
has grown to over 95 mammalian species and over 500 bird species. At the Rukungiri
District, tourists can witness tree-climbing lions with their uniquely black-manned males.
Aside from the wildlife, this national park is also known for its volcanic cones, deep craters,
and crater lakes where salt is mined
Uganda is an interesting country despite its persistent poverty and food supply problems. There are a
great number of tourist attractions that you can visit in Uganda to broaden your cultural outlook. Try
going rustic for a change and mingle with the natives of Uganda in Masindi. Masindi is a small town
located at the northwestern section of Uganda. You can get to Masindi from the main road leading
out of the country’s capital city of Kampala. Tourists can spend the night at the Masindi Hotel, the
oldest hotel in Uganda. The Masindi Hotel has been in operation since 1923. You can get a feel of
native activity in the bustling Masindi Market Street on a Sunday morning. The market, however,
can get to be quite congested so you have to make sure that you are comfortably attired for hot and

10. humid Masindi. Don’t forget to carry your own drinking water to ensure that you are fully hydrated
at all times.
There is very little excitement that can be had in Mbale, Uganda. But, this dearth of nightlife and
commercial activity is well compensated by the abundance of natural attractions you can visit for a
little communing with nature. Most interesting of all of the natural wonders you can explore from
Mbale is Mount Elgon. This mountain is the fourth highest peak in East Africa. At the foothills of the
mountain is an excellent hiking area known to locals as Mabasa. The mountains serve as a water
catchment into which the waters from Nzoia River flows down to Lake Victoria, and from Turkwel
River which flows down into Lake Turkana. As you hike up to the top of Mount Elgon, you will
witness a variety of wildlife roaming around.
Although very provincial in surroundings, Soroti is one of the main commercial centers in eastern
Uganda. The busy commercial center is punctuated by architectural structures speaking of the city’s
rich cultural heritage. The city is also surrounded by the magnificence of nature’s art. The most
famous of Soroti’s natural wonders is a rock formation from which you can get a splendid view of
central Soroti. The Soroti rock presents a beautiful vista of Soroti and its surrounding areas as well as
of Mount Elgon and Lake Kyoga. Tourists who wish to climb the Soroti rock should seek permission
from the Town Clerk. Aside from the town panorama, what is behind the rock would give you a
glimpse at Soroti’s colonial past. There you can find graves of residents engraved with the dates of

11. their death. The various ages of these people who were buried behind the Soroti rock is testament to
the unrestrained killings during Uganda’s colonial period.
At the heart of Tororo are railway lines that meet from various cites of Uganda. These railway lines
pass through other cities of Uganda towards Pakwach, Nairobi, and Kasese. Perhaps the most notable
claim to fame of this quaint Ugandan town is the Tororo Rock. The Tororo Rock juts up almost
5,000 feet over sea level. It is located a little over three miles southeast of Tororo’s central business
district and seems to tower over the entire town from anywhere in the Tororo District. On the way to
the top of the Tororo Rock are various ancestral caves and rock paintings. The magnificence of the
Tororo Rock could be equated with that of Paris’ Eiffel Tower.
The city of Kabale, Uganda opens the doors to the great African outdoors. This small market town is
considered to be Uganda’s transportation hub as its main road leads out of the Ugandan capital of
Kampala, right down to the border towards Rwanda and Congo. Taking this main road will take you
through magnificent rolling hills towards major outdoor tourist attractions. The most famous of these
outdoor adventure spots are Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and the Mgahinga National Park.
These two parks are known for regular gorilla watching tours. These gorilla watching tours are
tightly controlled and are limited to only to a few trips. If you are thinking of including this activity
on your Ugandan vacation, you have to book your tour at least three months before your scheduled
trip. It is also advisable to bring jungle boots and rain jackets to allow you to navigate through the

12. wet ground with ease. Even though Uganda is generally hot and dry, Kabala can be quite cool and
wet because of its altitude. Kabale is very dry and dusty from July to September.
The city of Entebe when you visit Uganda. You can enter the country right at the Entebbe
International Airport which is considered to be the country’s largest commercial and military airport.
This city is home to mostly civil servants and government ministers. In fact, the residence of the
president of Uganda, commonly referred to as the State House, is located in Entebbe. The city of
Entebbe is considered to be the cleanest and greenest in the whole of Uganda. There are local
regulations that have preserved the city’s flora and fauna despite developments in business and
infrastructure. The residents and local city officials of Entebbe have succeeded in maintaining an
environmentally friendly modern city with much of the old culture still present.
WEATHER AND CLIMATE IN UGANDA
The majority of the country has a tropical climate which varies according to altitude. During the year
the hottest months are from December to February when the temperature reaches 29 degrees Celsius.
The rainy seasons are from April to May and October to November, with the wettest month being
April.
Temperatures in some parts of the country can be quite cool owing to the country’s high altitude,
despite its position on the equator. The mountain areas become much cooler and the top of Mount
Elgon is often covered with snow. Other parts of the country are much warmer. There is heavy rain
between March and May and between October and November.
The best times to visit are December-March and June-September. It can be somewhat rainy then, but
not as rainy as in the rainy season, March-June. December-February and June-July are the driest
times, when things can even be a bit dusty. Although the country lies astride the equator, most of
Uganda is on a plateau 3,600-6,000 ft/900-1,830 m above sea level.

16. Nommo Gallery
This small building is Uganda's National Art Gallery where artwork by local artists as well
from other parts of East Africa displayed. Exhibitions are advertised in the local press, but
there is invariably something on display. There is also a shop attached with both artworks and
crafts available. It was once a private house and is set in spacious grounds. It located in
Kalolo on Victoria Ave, is open from 0900 to 1700 on weekdays, and from 0900 to 1500 on
weekends.
Kabaka Mwanga's Lake
Located in Kampala, is a large lake excavated in the late 1880s on the whim of Kabaka
Mwanga, who intended to link it with Lake Victoria.

Namugongo Martyrs' Shrine
Another important religious and historical site related to the Buganda kingdom is the
Namugongo Martyrs' shrine, situated about 12 kilometers 7.5 miles north-east of Kampala off
the Jinja Road. This is the impressive site where 22 Christian converts were excecuted on the
orders of Kabaka Mwanga II in 1886. A steel domed structure carved in a traditional style
stands at the scene. Artistic works depicting the scenes of this memorable Christian episode
grace the interior walls of the house. In the centre, preserved in glass are some remains of one
of the great martyrs: Kaloli Lwanga.
Getting there: Head out of the capital on the Jinja road. At the second main round about on
Jinja Road, near contenary Park, there is a right turn to Port Bell, some five kilometer three
miles away on the shores of Lake Victoria. Uganda Railways Cooperation uses the town as
its base from which to operate the country's second route to the Indian Ocean by utilizing
wagon ferries between port bell and the northern Tanzanian lake port of Mwanza, where
traffic is connected by railway to the Indian Ocean port of Dar es Salaam.
To continue to the Shrine, return to the Jinja Road and head north -east, past the Uganda
Management Institute on your left before you come to the huge Lugogo sports complex.
In 1996 Chinese contractors were busy constructing a US$ 28.6 million giant sports center
and stadium at Ndamboole village a short distance behind Kireka trading center. The stadium
has been named Mandela Stadium. Not far beyond the new Sports City center is the
Namugongo Martyrs Shrine, on this sport more than 20 newly converted Uganda Christians
were burnt alive by command of Kabaka Mwanga II, who had ordered them to renounce the
white man's religion.
Uganda National Museum, Kampala

18. Located out of the town centre on the Kira Road. Open 0900 to 1700, and there is a small
entrance fee. Most of the displays have been renovated and the rest are in the process of being
restored. Many of the items were looted during 1970-86 and a big effort is being made to
return the museum to its formal standard. Displays include a number of items from
archaeological sites from around the country; a collection of musical instruments including
many drums and a large an impressive canoe. Every so often the museum holds live
traditional music afternoons
Parks and Nature
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park - Gorilla Tracking
530km south west of Kampala (8.5 hour drive). Nestled down in the south west of the
country, on the edge of the Western Rift Valley this 331km² of montane rainforest is the only
forest in Africa where gorillas and chimpanzees occur together. The world population of
mountain gorillas is currently estimated at 600, half of which live in Bwindi, alongside an
estimated 350-400 chimpanzee. In addition to the gorillas and chimps this ancient rainforest -
one of the few in Africa to have flourished throughout the last Ice Age (making it over 25,000
years old) - is home to several other mammals (approx. 93 species) as well as roughly 360
species of bird.
Kibale Forest National Park - Chimpanzees
350km west of Kampala (4.5 hour drive). This 760km² area of rainforest, interspersed with
patches of grassland and swamp, supports a rich variety of fauna, 250 species of animal and
over 300 birds. There are 13 different primates here, the highest total for any Ugandan
National Park, including a large population of chimpanzees, some of which have been
habituated. Of the birds, the Prigogine's ground thrush, the only bird that is endemic to
Uganda, can be found.
Kidepo National Park- Enchanting
840km north east of Kampala (1.5 hour flight or 2 day drive). Tucked into the corner of
Uganda's border with Sudan and Kenya, Kidepo is a truly stunning park boasting a real sense
of wilderness that enchants visitors. The mountainous terrain of the park is broken by the
Narus Valley in the south west and the Kidepo Valley in the north east and is more typical of
Kenya than the rest of Uganda. Whilst the park is large (1,442km²) most of the wildlife is
concentrated within the Narus Valley revealing fantastic panoramic views of vast herds of

19. buffalo with elephant, giraffe, waterbuck and zebra grazing alongside. There are also a
number of predators present including lion, cheetah, leopard, and spotted hyena.
Lake Mburo National Park - Zebra, Lakes & Rolling Grassland
230km south west of Kampala (3.5 hour drive). With a varying landscape of open plains,
acacia grasslands and marshes this park is home to a huge array of flora and fauna. About 68
different species of mammals can be found within its 260km². The park also has approx. 313
different species of birds including Uganda's national emblem, the crested crane.
Murchison Falls National Park - The Nile, Uganda's Largest Park
300km north west of Kampala (6 hour drive). The sight of the Nile River, the world's longest
river, winding its way through the park and plunging through a narrow gap is unforgettable.
The falls are stunning, notable not so much for their size as for their immense power, caused
by the 50m-wide Nile being funnelled through a narrow cleft (7m-wide) in the rocks before
falling into a pool 43m below. The park is vast and beautiful. Predominantly wooded
savannah, the 4,000km² area is home to many of Africa's best-known plains animals
including giraffe, lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, hartebeests and many more. Fishing
beneath the falls is quite an experience where Nile perch and tiger-fish provide an exciting
challenge to anglers.
Queen Elizabeth National Park - Incredible Biodiversity
435km south west of Kampala (5.5 hour drive). Lying across the equator, this 1,978km² park
is bordered to the south west by Lake Edward and to the Northeast by Lake George with the
Kazinga Channel connecting the two. Serene and teeming with animals Queen Elizabeth
boasts one of the highest biodiversity ratings of any game park or reserve in the world, with
almost 100 mammal species and an incredible 606 bird species. To support such biodiversity
the vegetation is hugely varied from open savannah to rainforest, from dense papyrus swamps
and crater lakes to the vastness of Lake Edward. The rainforest in the Kyambura Gorge is
home to chimpanzees and the remote Ishasha sector is famed for its tree-climbing lions with
flamingoes providing a stunning splash of colour on the crater lakes.
Semliki Valley Wildlife Reserve - Uganda's First Protected Area
375km west of Kampala (6 hour drive). Previously known as the Toro Game Reserve,
Semliki Valley Wildlife Reserve is the oldest protected area in Uganda. Here is where East
Africa meets West. It is unique, gifted with geographic barriers that have formed a natural

20. haven for wildlife. Where the savannah is criss-crossed by shining river valleys, and the
escarpment, the edge of the Western Rift Valley, plunges into Lake Albert. The habitat
diversity (riverine forest, woodland and savannah) within the 558km² area of the reserve
supports a huge array of fauna including lion, leopard, elephant (both savannah and forest
species) buffalo, and chimpanzees as well as a staggering number of birds, with over 400
having been recorded.
Semliki National Park - Hot Springs, Forests and Pygmies
370km west of Kampala (6.5 hour drive). Situated within the remote Semliki Valley, site of
the Sempaya Hot Springs and named for the river which forms the Congolese border, this
221km² area of park protects an extension of the Congo's vast Ituri Rainforest. The park is of
particular interest to birdwatchers since a high proportion of the 400 bird species recorded
here, are thought to occur nowhere else in Uganda (10% are essentially Congolese species).
In Ormelle it remains one of the few Knights of the Temple churches still maintaining main part of
the original structure. The church it was part of a Templar Mansio, created along the small river Lia.
After the ban of the Temple order, the Mansio it was passed in property to the Order of Saint John
Knights.

Church on the Move
It's not every day a building just ups and moves... especially not when it's a
1,500-ton church.
But that was exactly what happened to the Cathedral of St Dominic in
Fuzhou, China today.
Part of the church building was taken 75.6m (248ft) from its original
position to move it out of the way of a construction project.
The accommodation for priests will then be rot...
Knights of the Temple church in Ormelle
In Ormelle it remains one of the few Knights of the Temple churches still maintaining
main part of the original structure. The church it was part of a Templar Mansio, created
along the small river Lia. After the ban of the Temple order, the Mansio it was passed in
property to the Order of Saint John Knights.
Shiite Holy Sites

In a now non existing house at the chrch of Mariapfarr the Austrian priest Joseph Mohr
wrote the text to the most famous Christmas Carol, Stille Nacht or Silent Night in english
in 1816 and Franz Xaver Gruber made the music to it. Christmas 1818 it was sung for the

St Pirans Churches near Mount
Now lying buried under the wind blown sands of Perran Bay, St Piran’s Oratory is
considered as one of the most important early Christian sites in Britain. It was allegedly
built in about the eighth century by St Piran and consists of a compact rectangular building
with a small nave and chancel, possibly separated by a wooden rood screen. A stone bench
runs round the whole interior and there are...vents, exhibitions and conferences in the
country, which may or may not be of interest to a visitor.
Whitby Abbey

23. Whitby Abbey is a ruined Benedictine abbey sited on the East Cliff, 199 steps above
Whitby harbour in North Yorkshire on the north-east coast of England.
It was founded in 657 AD by the Anglo-Saxon King of Northumbria, Oswy (Oswiu) as
Streoneshalh (the historical name of the town Whitby where the abbey is located). He

Binham Priory
St Mary's Priory, Binham, or Binham Priory, is a ruined Benedictine priory located in the
village of Binham in the English county of Norfolk. Today the nave of the much larger
priory church has become the Church of St. Mary and the Holy Cross and is still used as a
place of worship. The remains of the priory are in the care of English Heritage.

Lap dancing

outside Tamworth in Staffordshire, is the fourth most popular theme park in the UK, with
35 rides set in 280 acres of land as well as a 15 acre zoo. To get to the park during school
holidays simply catch the special E22 bus in the mornings (typically just before 9 and 10)
from Carrs Lane stop DK (near the Pavillions Shopping Centre). A return ticket should
cost £10. Outside of school holidays you'll need to catch bus 110, which runs every half
hour from Bull Street stop BF (near Snow Hill station) and get off at Fazeley. The return
fare is £4. If you're unsure of where exactly the stop is (and it's easy to miss) ask the driver
