There are mainly two type of Addresses:-
1.Physical Address( MAC address)
2.Logical Address ( IP address )
 The physical address is also called the MAC
address and it is generated by the manufacturer of
NIC(network interface card ).
 The Media Access Control (MAC) address. MAC
addresses are six bytes (48 bits) that
manufacturers of network adapters burn into their
products to uniquely identify them.
Example:
01:02:31:a2:b3:cf
 A network interface card (NIC) is a computer
circuit board or card that is installed in a
computer so that it can be connected to a
network.
 Click Start then Run
 Enter: cmd
 Enter: ipconfig /all
 The Physical Address is your MAC address; it
will look like 00-15-E9-2B-99-3C. You will have
a physical address for each network connection
that you have.
(PHYSICAL ADDRESS )
 Internet Protocol Address (or IP Address) is a 32
bits unique address that computing devices use
to identify itself and communicate with other
devices in the Internet Protocol network
 IP address uniquely identify all computers on the
public Internet.
 It signifies the address of both the sender and
receiver of packets on a network.
Example: 172.16.254.1 (IPv4) 32 bits
2001:db8:0:1234:0:567:8:1 ( IPv6) 128 bits
Type of IP Address
1. Static ip address: A static IP address is an IP
address that can be manually configured for a
device and it will never change
2. Dynamic ip address: A dynamic IP address is
an IP address assigned by a DHCP( Dynamic
Host Configuration Protocol) server which can be
change automatically any time.
 Advantages:
 Running Servers
computers using this type of address can host servers containing data
that other computers access through the Internet.
 Stability
Static IP addresses are also more stable for Internet use since they
never change
 Disadvantage:
 Need Many Numbers of Addresses
One main disadvantage of static IP addresses is that each address,
once assigned, is occupied by a single computer even when that
computer is not in use.
 Advantages:
 Need less administration
It requires very less administration because all work is done
by DHCP automatically
 Save Time
In a large LAN network, dynamic IP helps you to save your
time as you need not to configure hundreds of computers
manually
 Disadvantage:
 Can’t make server
The main disadvantage of dynamic IP is that it is not suited
to web hosting. You would require static IP then.
 Click Start then Run
 Enter: cmd
 Enter: ipconfig /all
 The IPv4 is your IP address; it will look
like198.165.25.12
 We can also check IP is Dynamic or Static
 If the line DHCP Enabled has a Yes beside
it, you have a dynamic IP address if there
is NO beside DHCP you have static IP

Notas do Editor

  1. Let’s take an example: suppose you want to send an email to your friend. Though your email may be broken down into millions of data packets before it’s transmitted, right now for simplicity’s sake consider it a single information packet. The IP addresses are embedded on each packet that is transmitted over the network and are used to identify the machine.
  2. How do IP addresses and MAC addresses work together? IP is a protocol that is used on a layer above ethernet. Another protocol for example would be IPX. When your computer wants to send a packet to some IP address x.x.x.x, then the first check is if the destination address is in the same IP network as the computer itself. If x.x.x.x is in the same network, then the destination IP can be reached directly, otherwise the packet needs to be sent to the configured router. Up to now things seem to have gotten worse, because now we have two IP addresses: one is the original IP packet’s target address, the other is the IP of the device to which we should send the packet (the next hop, either the final destination or the router). Since ethernet uses MAC addresses, the sender needs to get the MAC address of the next hop. There is a special protocol ARP (address resolution protocol) that is used for that. Once the sender has retrieved the MAC address of the next hop, he writes that target MAC address into the packet and sends the packet.
