Advantages of Revision
• Memory Enhancement
• Builds Confidence
• Relieves Exam Stress
• Increases Speed of Writing
• Decreases Exam Phobia - Repeated revision
ensures that you will not go blank during exam.
• Different revision techniques have different
advantages.
Frequency of Revision
• Revision must be done as many times as
you study.
• It means that revision must follow every
time you study.
• Revision must be done every day.
• Before you start your studies today, revise
what you studied yesterday using the brief
notes you had made.
• At the end of the week, revise the
whole week’s studies.
Different Techniques of Revision
• Mind mapping
• Flow Charts
• Spider diagrams
• Fishbone diagrams
• Zigzag method
• Deep processing
Different Techniques of Revision
• Group discussion
• Audio Revision (Listening to your own voice)
• Practice tests
• Time saving revision slips
• Bedtime revision
Mind Mapping – Tony Buzan
What is a mind-map?
-It is a powerful graphic technique.
-It consists of a central word or
concept around which 5 to 10 main
ideas are drawn and around each of
these main ideas further related ideas
are drawn.
-This technique Is extremely useful in
recall of information. As such, this is a
very important learning tool, indeed !
What do you need to make a mind-map?
• Blank unruled paper,
• Coloured pens and pencils,
• Your brain and
• Your imagination
7 steps to making a mind-map:
• Start in the centre of a blank page.
• Use an image or picture for your central idea.
• Use colours through out !
• Connect your main branches to the central
image and connect your second and third
level branches to the first and second levels.
• Make your branches curved rather than
straight lined.
• Use one key word per line.
• Use images through out.
Uses of Mind Maps
• Note making
• Creative writing
• Studying in group
• Memorizing
• Before giving a talk or presentation
• Most importantly, retrieving information.
Zigzag Method
• This method is suitable for revising lists.
For example:
• Historical dates
• Mathematical formulae
• Chemical signs and formulae
• Scientific names of animals,
• Geographical facts and figures
• Word meanings
• Idioms and phrases and so on…
Zigzag Method
• This is a very simple yet extremely effective technique.
My favourite technique since childhood !
• Revision with this technique is done in zigzag pattern.
That is why I call it zigzag technique.
• For instance, if you have to learn a list of 100
facts/figures/words/names, etc. by heart, learn 10 today,
revise them tomorrow and learn 10 more. Then, revise
the 20 the next day and learn 10 more. Revise the 30 next
day and learn 10 more. Revise the 40 next day and learn
10 more and so on…
• So simple! Is it not?
• Research has proved that an individual is more likely to
remember a list of items when rehearsal is spaced over a
long period of time.
Deep Processing
• This technique is useful when you have to
learn, understand as well as apply something.
• Deep processing means asking the question
“Why?” at every step or stage.
• For example, if you wish to remember a
tricky mathematical formula, analyze in your
own way and understand every constant,
variable, sign or symbol used in it. Such as,…
Deep Processing
• (a-b)³ = a³ - 3a²b + 3ab² - b³
• Why a³ ? Because ‘a’ is multiplied with ‘a’ three
times.
• Why the minus sign thereafter? Because b
carries a minus sign. But , then why no minus
sign next? Because –b * –b becomes +b² and so
on…
• The deeper you go, the longer you remember.
• This technique is useful for revising definitions
also.
• Analyzing a definition helps in
memorizing the crux of the definition.
Group Discussions
• Group discussions are very effective when
conducted in a disciplined manner and are
focused on a subject or topic.
• During discussion absolutely no chitchatting
should be done.
• Group discussions help clarifying concepts and
enhancing memory.
Practice Tests
• Solving papers involves writing and as you
know writing is a good revision technique.
• Practice tests not only build your confidence
but they help you revise the studies.
• Practice tests also make it clear what topics
you need focus on more.
• Thus, these tests help you select your
revision material and manage the time more
effectively.
Revision Slips
• You may make small revision slips for
carrying in the pocket.
• On these slips you may write those concepts
or facts which you find difficult to remember.
• For instance, you may write difficult
mathematical formulae, chemical formulae,
definitions, points of distinction, etc.
• Whenever you have spare time you can take
out a slip from your pocket and revise.
• These slips include the zigzag revision slips.
Bedtime Revision
• This technique is useful for difficult topics, such
as, lengthy definitions/answers or answers
which have many technical words to remember.
• You just need to read such answers or topics
carefully just before going to bed.
• Do not do any distracting activity thereafter.
• The subconscious mind will ponder over those
topics while you are sleeping.
• Continue this practice every night. You will be
amazed at the results.
• You will find that you remember these topics
better than the easier ones.
The Difficulty Faced in Revision is
Only One –
• BOREDOM
To deal with boredom:
–BE CREATIVE !!! Use the graphical tools.
–Remind yourself that YOU HAVE GOT TO
DO IT !
–The best thing to do is remind yourself of
the advantages.
–And if the boredom still persists, remind
yourself of the disadvantages of
“not revising”.
Advantages of Revision
• Memory Enhancement
• Builds Confidence
• Relieves Exam Stress
• Increases Speed of Writing
• Decreases Exam Phobia - Repeated revision
assures that you will not go blank during
exam.
Thank you !
