Henry realized that his daughter has been playing a lot of iPhone games recently and wants to do something about it.
She asks for the phone everywhere – it’s almost become more important than her stuffed animal.
He searches the store and sees something called Screen Pig that seems really interesting. He downloads it to try it out.
When he starts the app, he’s goes through the initial overview to get an idea of how it will work.
He’s never seen this concept in an app before – converting physical play time into playable screen time.
It really is as simple as it sounds. Put the band on, go play, and sync.
The app keeps track of the time and automatically closes the game when time’s up.
He now really likes how this looks and decides to order the Oink Link band and goes to set up a profile for Juliette. He starts with profile settings.
First, the basics.
He goes back to the settings screen to see what else is configurable. He wants to see what activity levels are
Ah, this is interesting! He can set how much pay time should equal how much play time. He really wants it to be a 1:1 settings, but thinks that maybe he should start out slow.
He starts with 2:1. He likes that the app gave him the option for him to set this rather than just forcing something on him.
He notes that the app lets him unlock more time if it’s needed. This could be handy for long road trips.
He picks out games on his phone to add to Screen Pig. This will make sure that she can’t just play a game without going through the app. It’s a gate.
He hands the oink link off to Juliette and tells her to go play. Let’s see how this works.
She starts the app and tap the Time button at the bottom bar because she wants to add more time. Since this is her first time doing the sync, she taps “Sync Oink Link.” Dad told her that she only needs to do this once – it will sync automatically the next time.
The screen changes and she learns that she earned a lot of time! Yay! She wants to use the time right away so she taps I want to play.
What game should she play?
She decides she’s in the mood to playWhere’s My Water.
A little while later, she gets a warning that she has 5 minutes left. Wow, that went fast!
Time’s up!
She tells her dad she wants to go play outside some more so she can earn more time.
After a week, Henry sees that she’s really learning the concept of “paying to play” – she no longer complains when she’s not allowed to use the phone anymore. She just grabs her oink link and heads out the door.
She’s actually been working really hard too! The app says her activity has been vigorous. It might be time to slowly dial back the activity levels settings!
Henry’s really happy that he went with the Screen Pig and Oink Link system and is looking forward to continuing its use.
