PREFACE

Unless the knowledge is applied in the practical field, it cannot attain perfection and maturity. A
project work is the scientific and systematic study of real issue and problems with the application
of management principles, concept and skills. The essential ingredients of a project are that it
should contain scientific collection of data its analysis and interpretation that lead to valid
conclusions and feasible suggestion. Project work is an essential part of partial fulfillment of the
syllabus of PGDM in IB. I have prepared this report during my summer training at “MINE
LINE PVT. LIMITED”. This study has given real exposure to company logistics and this study
has given me the confidence to face the real transportation problem and I have learn how
company’s logistic costs is to be reduced. The whole report is to be divided into different
chapters, each dealing with the different aspects of the study the report has been return in a very
comprehensive way with a suitable heading of each chapter. The last chapter deals with some
recommendations which will be help full to the company in countering its competition as well as
having an edge over them. I have tried my best to do justice and be honest in analyzing the topic.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

In large business houses like MINE LINE LVT. LTD. where lots of projects
are going on at a same time at different places, the logistics head has to
handle every day a large number of transportation receipts and payments and
also contact the different logistical companies. Mine line pvt. Ltd. Now is
one of the most established names in making flame proof electrical for
modern mining. During my summer training I have completed the project on
“procurement of goods and swot analysis of their logistics system”.
Basically I was working on their transportation system and made a research
report about how mime line pvt. Ltd. Can reduce their transportation costs.
Also I did some field work on the different logistics companies in Kolkata
those companies can deals with mine line and help them for reducing
transportation costs. Also I have submitted a research report regarding their
prospective customers around some certain places like- Orissa,
andhrapradesh, madhyapradesh, Bihar, uttarpradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat
etc.In my first part, a report is made on a detailed study, company
introduction; in second part I have mentioned various products of mine line
and their brief introduction, in the third part all about the business
environment of mine line pvt. Ltd. Also I have mentioned different

Research study

My project is all about the procurement of goods and SWOT analysis of the logistics

system of the company. due to the company’s concern I made research report and

submitted to the company which is help them to reducing their transportation costs and

my project is also shown different kind of transportation modes as well as various way to

procure their goods which is should effective for I have studied the company’s previous

year’s bills file and note down all places where mine line has transported their goods &

calculate total transportation costs. At last I came to know that Because of transportation

logistics from January, 2011 to January, 2012 company spends the amount of Rs.

2300000. Mine line is transporting their goods in different places throughout the India

like andhrapradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Orissa, madhyapradesh etc.basically this company

Chooses road or highway mode of transportation like transport through trucks. In this

case mine line is following the “POINT –TO-POINT “transportation network. Like that-

                     Point of

                 origin

                                                                    Point of

                                                                destination

 In the case of point-to-point network quit common for long distance hauls on the national
   highway.
 The point of origin and point of destination are fixed. Complete truck loading is assured
       for both ways.

The company mine line is generally following this transporting mode. Due to this mode they are
suffering few problems like-

Disadvantages of point to point network:-

 If a city pair is not served, goods are out of luck, as there is no way to get to a destination
if they use that highway route network.

 The frequency of truck or vehicle may be reduced because a point-to-point system
requires a large number of combinatory, as the number of city pairs is increased by many
       magnitudes.

 To reducing their transportation costs they can follow the” HUB AND SPOKE”
transportation mode. It would be safer & time consuming than previous one. Not only
that they can also take the warehouse had concept to get more available to have the
       customers decreased their transportation costs.

'Hub & Spoke' strategy in the transportation has lots of opportunities to decrease the
transportation costs of the company. Making HUB at Kolkata and spoke at major other location
where having major demands. Like if we take the places of Andhra Pradesh, madhyapradesh,
Orissa, Jharkhand in the context of good prospects or demand of product’s point of view. Then
we come to know that how this mode is useful for the transportation. If we set up a main hub at
Kolkata and open spokes in those places where having a major demand of the products
andhrapradesh, madhyapradesh, Jharkhand etc.in that way company reduce their transportation
costs and more available to the customers those are living from those areas.

       Hub and Spoke Network:-
 The hub acts like a central feeder point to the distribution centers, which are at the
strategic locations spread across the geographical area.

 High volume and high-speed shipment takes place from hub to DC through the shortest
       routes called spokes.

 The trans-shipment of consignment is done at DC for distribution across the local area.

                                                                  DC (ANDHRAPRADESH)

                                   MOTHER HUB

                               (KOLKATA)

   DC (JHARKHAND) DC (ORISSA)

                                                        DC (MADHYAPRADESH)

 WHY HUB AND SPOKE SHOULD BE USED TO REDUCE THE

       TRANSPORTATION COSTS?

-It helped to ensure that connecting flights belonged to the airline
-It emphasized service to large cities.
-Aircraft arrived at predictable (albeit intense) intervals, generally lessening workload for the
airport staff and air traffic controllers.
-Routing all traffic through a hub allows airlines to operate more efficiently while controlling
costs. The hub is a central location from which the day to day operations of the airline can be
managed. Keeping operations in a central location minimizes staffing as well as supply
inventory.
-The hub and spoke system increases aircraft utilization and passenger load factors.

-For a network of n nodes, only n - 1 routes are necessary to connect all nodes; that is, the upper
bound is n - 1, and the complexity is O (n). This compares favorably to

the routes, or O(n2), that would be required to connect each node to every
other node in a point-to-point network. For example, in a system with 10 destinations, the spoke-
hub system requires only 9 routes to connect all destinations, while a true point-to-point system
would require 45 routes.

-The small number of routes generally leads to more efficient use of transportation resources. For
example, aircraft are more likely to fly at full capacity, and can often fly routes more than once a
day.

-Complicated operations, such as package sorting and accounting, can be carried out at the hub,
rather than at every node.

-Spokes are simple, and new ones can be created easily.

The following two points are the major advantages that the hub-and-spoke system had initially
brought to the airline business; however some disadvantages had been developed later due to
changes in external environmental factors.

1. Encouraged the rapid growth in the airline business-

The hub-and-spoke system since developed after deregulation, has allowed a rapid growth in
size, competition strategy and traffic demand in the airline business. However, as suggested by
Wells and Younger (2004 4) this had resulted in operational inefficiencies at periods of slow
economy; with airlines resulting in very poor financial performances.

As a result of this, some airlines restructure their business model to return to the point-to-point
system and move out of the constant need for a large hub, and utilise hubs in a more uniform
matter in terms of arrivals and departures. This phenomenon is known as the rolling hubs.

2. Efficient use of scarce transportation resources-

The system has less number of routes connecting all spokes enabling a more efficient use of
scarce transportation resources. This however had small airports and economies of smaller
regions suffering as per the reduced capacity. As a result this encouraged airports to agree with
low cost carriers to offer low airport fees and commissions from local businesses to bring in
traffic and passenger flow.

The passenger market favored this type of airline business as lower fares were rolled out to the
market from these smaller hubs; which caused great competition to full service carriers that were
operating with large amount of airport fees to use large hubs, and can no longer return to these
small hub markets as it is not cost efficient and are dominated by low cost carriers.

Also there are some disadvantages of hub & spoke but in this case these disadvantages are not a
big deal for company’s growth.

       Disadvantages of hub-and-spoke;-

1. Congestion and delays at hub airports

2. Discontinuous use of airport facilities

3. Airport dependency
Apart from third party logistics and applying for Hub & Spoke model I also suggest them for
decreasing the rate of logistical costs of the company which is WAREHOUSE concept. If the
company mine line pvt. Ltd. open warehouses or take a warehouse in a rental basis around those
places where they have good prospective customer’s like-Bhubaneswar, kottagudem, singarauli,
dhanbad etc.

     Characteristics of three warehouses:-

                       Private Public Contract

                            market demand

is the best option for mine line pvt. Limited to reducing their transportation costs.
Because there are few reasons behind it. They are following:-

       • These are the product specific warehouse facilities acquired for use for a specific period
           against fixed charges.

       • A contract warehouse can provide the benefits of both private and public warehouses.

The resources such as labor, material handling equipment, storage arrangement, and
communication equipment can be used on sharing basis with depositors from the same industry
to economize on operating cost.

The company mine line pvt. Limited are basically deals with the bulk goods. they are making the
flame proof equipments. in that case contract warehouse is the best option for them. not only that
but also in that case investment costs is is also very low, Adequacy of goods stored is very high
etc.

        Designing a Warehousing System:-
In designing a warehousing system, the following basic questions relating to this flow become
significant.

How many warehouses should we have?

        Where should we locate them?

What should be the size or capacity of each of them?

1. How many warehouses should we have?

The cost of warehousing is directly proportional to the number of warehouses, while the
transportation cost goes down with an increase in warehouse numbers as shown:

                                                Total costs Warehousing

                        Cost

                                                                           Transportation

                                    No. of Warehouses

2. Where should we locate them?

Quantitative techniques for warehouse site selection:

      For Single Depot Location-
 Center of Gravity of Area Model

 Center of Gravity of Load Model

 Center of Gravity of Tones-Kilometers Model

1. for Single Depot Location-

Center of Gravity of Area Model-

A map of marketing areas may be drawn and a sheet representing the area may be balanced. The
point where the sheet gets balanced is the site for warehouse location. This point is expected to
be at minimum average distance from all the locations in the area. Quantitative techniques for
warehouse site selection:

This may be illustrated visually by imagining a sheet having holes representing the customer
locations and their demand load of annual purchases. Weights are hung on each hole in
proportion to the demand load. The points at which the model sheet gets balanced gives the
center of weights.

This model takes into consideration both loads and distances to arrive at the optimum
transportation cost. The final solution is obtained after applying trail and error methods several
times.

2. for Multiple Depot Location-

 For planning the chain of warehouse the management will have to do a cost-benefit
         analysis.

 The factors influencing a decision on multiple warehouses locations are:

Market Size

 Area Coverage by each warehouse
 Product type

 Demand pattern- continuous or seasonal

     Customer service level

Mine line can set their own warehouse or take the warehouse as a contract basis like that:-

                                         ANDAMARRI(DC)

                                       ANDHRAPRADESH
BELLAMPALLI(DC) RAMAGUNDEM(DC)

                                       (WAREHOUSE IN
                                       BHOOPALPALLY)

 SINGARAULI(DC)
                                                                             KOTTAGUDEM(DC)

                                    YELLANDA(DC)

At first open or borrow a warehouse in Bhoopalpaly at andhrapradesh and then open few spoke s
or distribution channel in different places in andhrapradesh where their demand of the product is
 very high.

Also should follow the same plan to reduce the transportation costs in the case of
 madhyapradesh, Jharkhand. Like that:-
Annupur (dc)

                                                                                          Sohagpur (dc)

       Baikhanthapur (dc)

                                                      Madhyapradesh(w

                                                  arehouse in bilaspur)

                                                                                         Chirimiri (dc)
       Karba (dc)

                                                  Bisrampur (dc)

In the case of Jharkhand company follow the same rule, at first take the warehouse in dhanbad and open
spoke or distribution channel in different places in jharkhand.like that:-

                                      EKKRA, BCCL(DC)

                                        JHARKHAND
BOKARO (DC)
                                    (WAREHOUSE IN
                                                                                   W.B & BIHAR (DC)
                                    DHANBAD)
DATA COLLECTION

Data collection is an important part of my project. Because according to company’s concern I

have to find out the logistics companies those have cheaper rate and offering various

transportation mode as well as facilities. in this project I need to find out a way through that

company can reduce their transportation costs and also with the help of the research report

they can developed their transportation system. has why I have lots of data from the

different logistics companies in Kolkata those company can be help the Mine line pvt. Ltd.

and assist them regarding their logistics system and which is really effective for reducing

their transportation costs’ have collected data from those following company regarding

SWOT ANALYSIS OF THE LOGISTICS SYSTEM OF

                                      THE COMPANY

     STREANGTH:-

Basically company is following a simple transportation network. Generally they go through the
point –to-point transportation network. Which is safe for transportation of bulky goods than
the others networks. Loading & unloading is happened in between the point of starting from
point of destination. That is less chance for wastages of goods.

Also mine lone pvt. Limited go through the with the transporting agencies like-Raj transporting
agency. They are transporting their goods from production house to destination place with the
help of transporting agencies. This is smart way ti cost cutting of transportation. It is a way to
smooth transporting process without any interruption. They have a strong point that is the
effective utilization of transporting agencies because type’s transportation agencies are very
responsible to taking the order and delivery the goods timely and safely to the customers.

     WEAKNESS:-

The company mine line pvt. Limited has also few weak points in the context of logistics. Only
because of that they are paying huge money per year for their transportation. Previous year
company has near about twenty laks which is should not be paid .this problem has created only
because of their using the point-to-point network.ots a big weak point for them. Point-to-point
network quit common for long distance hauls on the national highway. in this case point of
origin & point of destination are fixed. Complete truck loading is assured for both ways.

     OPPORTUNITY:-
Mining is an important part of every economy. In a world that is already facing shortages of
some of the important minerals and metals like petroleum and coal, the demand for such
products is only bound to increase with time. Meeting those demands will be a challenge for the
mining and minerals industry worldwide. With the increasing efforts in R&D and technological
innovations, the mining and minerals industry has developed huge Human resource
requirements. There is already a shortage of skilled workforce throughout the world.
Developments are taking place rapidly and many companies in this sector are expanding their
operations and are working on new projects like the refinery being constructed by Reliance
Industries Limited in Jamnagar. Also Bharat Petroleum is conducting R&D For value added
products and alternate fuels. So to conclude, it can be said that mining and minerals sector has a
bright future, be it in terms of employment or technology.
There are few reasons behind good future and prospect of the modern mining industry in India

as well as others countries .they are following:-

   1. India’s Variety and Abundance of Resources-

Speaking only about identified reserves, India has the fourth-largest coal reserves in the world
and significant reserves of bauxite, titanium ore, chromites, diamonds, and limestone. Gold,
copper, zinc and uranium reserves have also been identified, though in a more limited volume.

In terms of production, India ranks 3rd in production of coal & lignite (80% of the mines in India
are coal mines), 2nd in barites, 4th in iron ore, 5th in bauxite, and 7th in manganese ore.

   2. Recent Discovery-

“India has, till date, explored only 7-9% of the mineral resources as against almost 100%
geophysical and geochemical surveys in countries such as Australia”. This was revealed in
September 2011 in a report titled Opportunities “launched by Ernst & Young at a conference
organized by the Federation of Indian Mineral Industries in Bangalore.Metals price and the high
level of dependency of the country for gold urge India to enter in a more comprehensive
exploration of the potential resources of the country. Recent discoveries had shown how large
this potential might be.

   3. India’s Long History of Mining-

India’s long history of mining, dated back to the first millennium BC with linkages to the Indus
Valley Civilization, demonstrates the geological potential of the country and explains its strong
mining tradition. Prestigious mining schools, often established by the British, trains highly
qualified scientific and mining engineering professionals.

4. A Highly Qualified Scientific and Mining Engineering Community-

The choice 4.f India as the host country for the 10th International Symposium on Rock
Fragmentation by Blasting (New Delhi, November 2012) is enough to demonstrate the high
respect the Indian scientific community is held by the worldwide experts in that field. The
Fragblast Symposia represents the most important event in disseminating the latest advances in
the science and technology of rock fragmentation by blasting and other related means.

“The first symposium was held in Sweden in 1983 and since then it has been convened at
intervals of 3 - 4 years at different locations around the world. These locations, selected standing
International Committee from among several competing submissions, are chosen on the basis of
prominence of mining activities and R&D initiatives of the host country.
   5. Strategic Location for Export-

India’s geographical location makes the country a perfect hub for raw materials or metals
exportation to both the developed European markets and the fast-developing Asian
markets. Iron ore, steel and aluminum are massively exported to China, UE and Japan.
Roughly, 50% of the steel produced in India is exported, and 50% of this total is exported
to China.

6. Strong Internal Demand Especially For Coal and Gold-
India maintained a spectacular growth for the last year and might keep on booming at least until
2030. In order to fuel that development, Indian demand for metals and minerals will continue to
grow accordingly.

According to a 2010 report from the McKinsey Global Institute “700 to 900 million square
meters of commercial and residential space needs to be built – or a new Chicago every year (…)
2,5 billion square meters of roads will have to be paved, 20 times the capacity added in the past
decade (…) [and] 7400 kilometers of metros and subways will need to be constructed, 20 times
the capacity added in the past decade “The new gold discoveries will also be easily absorbed by
the internal demand. India is and will remain for long, the world's largest consumer of gold and
the world’s largest gold jewelry market.

7. Strong Anti-Corruption and Fight against Illegal Mining Initiatives-

“Known for corruption in its political, regulatory, and legal systems, India needs to take this
issue head-on by instituting new controls, as soon as possible, as corruption continues to damage
its markets (…) While the government struggles to modernize the bureaucracy and corruption is
a challenge that must be overcome.” Potential corruption opportunities arise, inter alia, during
the license attribution process. Obtaining a license by corrupting an official means you
are illegally exploiting the ore. Corruption leading to faulty undervaluation of exported quantities
for tax and royalties avoidance purpose has also been recently reported to be common practice in
India.

Since 2006, India set an example of an efficient and pro-active fighting policy against illegal
mining and corruption. This is a long-term policy but appointing the retired tough independent
Supreme Court Judge N. Santos Hedge as Lokayukta (Ombudsman) of Karnataka state has been
a strong political sign. He soon unveiled a massive illegal iron ore mining involving some of the
richest families and mighty politicians of the country. As a first outcome of this fighting policy,
the famous eddy’s where sent to jail and actions have been announced against 617 officials,
including Ministers. Upholding this policy might improve India’s ranking and hopefully
contribute to attract additional national and foreign investments.
NOW A DAYS INCREASING THE DEMAND OF FLAMEPROOF ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENTS
BECAUSE MOST OF THE MINING COMPANIES ARE ASKING FOR THESE TYPES OF
EQUEPMENTS TO PREVENT THE EXPLOSION.NOW OFTEN EXPLOSION IS HAPPENING UNDER
THE GROPUND DUE TO VARIOUS CAUSES AND MINING COMPANIES ARE SUFFERING
REGARDING THESE KIND OF ACCIDENT NOT ONLY THAT BUT ALSO NUMBER OF PEOPLE
THOSE ARE WORKING IN UNDERGROUND THOSE ARE DYING DUE TO THESE KIND OF
EXPLOSIONS.NUMBERS OF FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC COMPANIES AREV GOING TO OPEN
THEIR NEW BRANCHES IN THE EASTERN ZONE LIKE JHARKHABD,ORISSA,BIHAR ETC.THE
MINING COMPANIES THOSE ARE BELONGS TO THESE STATES WOULD BE GOOD PROSPECTS
FOR MINE LINE PRIVATE LIMITED.

Interpretation-

In every year increasing the oil pricing is the one of the cause behind their increasing
transportation costs. Like an example in the year of 2006 oil price was rs.3 per litr. Then in
the year of 2008 oil price increased up to rs.4 per ltr. In 2010 the price was rs.4.5 per ltr.
And this year it is grow up to rs.7 per ltr.
FINDINGS

1. By analyzing the survey we can say that approximately increasing the transportation
costs is one of the main barriers of company’s yearly turnover.
2. Apart from those area like Jharkhand,Orissa, andhrapradesh, madhyapradesh, bihar,
China, France etc number of states and area like uttarpradesh, gujrat, maharastra
etc would very prospective customers carrying area for the company.
3. They are generally uses the road as a transportation mode but if they are going for
the air as well as water then it might be very useful for their logistics system.
4. In the case of bulky goods transportation mine line is used to 10 wheeler and small
truck. For that they are paying very high amount of money because in that case need
number of trucks for transporting huge electrical equipments at a time. But if they
transporting their goods through the big container then it might be cheaper than
   previous.
5. To avoid the increasing rate of oil price they can utilize the vehicle those are running
with the help of natural gases.
CONCLUSION

The project on procurement of goods & SWOT analysis of the logistics
system of the company Mine line pvt. Ltd. gives the deep understanding of all the
aspect of corporate logistics system, which covers all the key area of
transportation along with all the glamour features such as warehousing facilities,
ambience, and staff with the apt attitude to provide all the comfort required by the
clients at a right time. I have tried my level best to cover all the aspect of the
logistics system of the company Mine line pvt. Ltd. offices along with the
competitor’s analysis of the logistical point of view. In spite of some limitations,
the project is completed covering the detail study of corporate logistics. Really,
this project was like a challenge for me, I have accepted and completed with the
best of our efforts, knowledge and skills. The study gives some of the conclusion,
which is follows:

 Pure it established a strong position and how the company Mine line pvt.
Ltd. is doing their transportation in market.

 Mine line brand doing well in the market of modern mining.

 SAIT mining is the greatest brand in France (Europe) brand so it is
     greatest strength in the business.

 There is a huge competition in mining sector.
   .

 Eventually I conclude by saying that I fell top of the world when I think
about my association which is having their business not only with the
country but also having their business outside the country with this brand.
It makes me feel top of the world when I say that I have worked with Mine
             line Private Limited.

                             LEARNING FROM SIP

This is the second time I have visited a compamy.but it’s a first time I was working

throughout six weeks in an industry’s .I made a full project report regarding company’s

logistics system. That was a great experience for me. Also I worked with my industrial

mentor who is the logistical head of the company have learned lots of thing from him

corporate logistics and how company use this system for transporting the goods. Also i have

learned till now which I studied throughout one year about logistics in my pgdm-IB course

how this is applied in practical world. This is the one of the most important learning from

sip. Through these types of learning I can easily understand my own subject very well.

Because practical knowledge is always more effective than bookish knowledge. These types of

industrial experience will obviously help my future career.

  • 21. Research study My project is all about the procurement of goods and SWOT analysis of the logistics system of the company. due to the company’s concern I made research report and submitted to the company which is help them to reducing their transportation costs and my project is also shown different kind of transportation modes as well as various way to procure their goods which is should effective for I have studied the company’s previous year’s bills file and note down all places where mine line has transported their goods & calculate total transportation costs. At last I came to know that Because of transportation logistics from January, 2011 to January, 2012 company spends the amount of Rs. 2300000. Mine line is transporting their goods in different places throughout the India like andhrapradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Orissa, madhyapradesh etc.basically this company Chooses road or highway mode of transportation like transport through trucks. In this case mine line is following the “POINT –TO-POINT “transportation network. Like that- Point of origin Point of destination  In the case of point-to-point network quit common for long distance hauls on the national highway.
  • 22.  The point of origin and point of destination are fixed. Complete truck loading is assured for both ways. The company mine line is generally following this transporting mode. Due to this mode they are suffering few problems like- Disadvantages of point to point network:-  If a city pair is not served, goods are out of luck, as there is no way to get to a destination if they use that highway route network.  The frequency of truck or vehicle may be reduced because a point-to-point system requires a large number of combinatory, as the number of city pairs is increased by many magnitudes.  To reducing their transportation costs they can follow the” HUB AND SPOKE” transportation mode. It would be safer & time consuming than previous one. Not only that they can also take the warehouse had concept to get more available to have the customers decreased their transportation costs. 'Hub & Spoke' strategy in the transportation has lots of opportunities to decrease the transportation costs of the company. Making HUB at Kolkata and spoke at major other location where having major demands. Like if we take the places of Andhra Pradesh, madhyapradesh, Orissa, Jharkhand in the context of good prospects or demand of product’s point of view. Then we come to know that how this mode is useful for the transportation. If we set up a main hub at Kolkata and open spokes in those places where having a major demand of the products andhrapradesh, madhyapradesh, Jharkhand etc.in that way company reduce their transportation costs and more available to the customers those are living from those areas. Hub and Spoke Network:-
  • 23.  The hub acts like a central feeder point to the distribution centers, which are at the strategic locations spread across the geographical area.  High volume and high-speed shipment takes place from hub to DC through the shortest routes called spokes.  The trans-shipment of consignment is done at DC for distribution across the local area. DC (ANDHRAPRADESH) MOTHER HUB (KOLKATA) DC (JHARKHAND) DC (ORISSA) DC (MADHYAPRADESH)  WHY HUB AND SPOKE SHOULD BE USED TO REDUCE THE TRANSPORTATION COSTS? -It helped to ensure that connecting flights belonged to the airline -It emphasized service to large cities.
  • 24. -Aircraft arrived at predictable (albeit intense) intervals, generally lessening workload for the airport staff and air traffic controllers. -Routing all traffic through a hub allows airlines to operate more efficiently while controlling costs. The hub is a central location from which the day to day operations of the airline can be managed. Keeping operations in a central location minimizes staffing as well as supply inventory. -The hub and spoke system increases aircraft utilization and passenger load factors. -For a network of n nodes, only n - 1 routes are necessary to connect all nodes; that is, the upper bound is n - 1, and the complexity is O (n). This compares favorably to the routes, or O(n2), that would be required to connect each node to every other node in a point-to-point network. For example, in a system with 10 destinations, the spoke- hub system requires only 9 routes to connect all destinations, while a true point-to-point system would require 45 routes. -The small number of routes generally leads to more efficient use of transportation resources. For example, aircraft are more likely to fly at full capacity, and can often fly routes more than once a day. -Complicated operations, such as package sorting and accounting, can be carried out at the hub, rather than at every node. -Spokes are simple, and new ones can be created easily. The following two points are the major advantages that the hub-and-spoke system had initially brought to the airline business; however some disadvantages had been developed later due to changes in external environmental factors. 1. Encouraged the rapid growth in the airline business- The hub-and-spoke system since developed after deregulation, has allowed a rapid growth in size, competition strategy and traffic demand in the airline business. However, as suggested by
  • 25. Wells and Younger (2004 4) this had resulted in operational inefficiencies at periods of slow economy; with airlines resulting in very poor financial performances. As a result of this, some airlines restructure their business model to return to the point-to-point system and move out of the constant need for a large hub, and utilise hubs in a more uniform matter in terms of arrivals and departures. This phenomenon is known as the rolling hubs. 2. Efficient use of scarce transportation resources- The system has less number of routes connecting all spokes enabling a more efficient use of scarce transportation resources. This however had small airports and economies of smaller regions suffering as per the reduced capacity. As a result this encouraged airports to agree with low cost carriers to offer low airport fees and commissions from local businesses to bring in traffic and passenger flow. The passenger market favored this type of airline business as lower fares were rolled out to the market from these smaller hubs; which caused great competition to full service carriers that were operating with large amount of airport fees to use large hubs, and can no longer return to these small hub markets as it is not cost efficient and are dominated by low cost carriers. Also there are some disadvantages of hub & spoke but in this case these disadvantages are not a big deal for company’s growth. Disadvantages of hub-and-spoke;- 1. Congestion and delays at hub airports 2. Discontinuous use of airport facilities 3. Airport dependency
  • 26. Apart from third party logistics and applying for Hub & Spoke model I also suggest them for decreasing the rate of logistical costs of the company which is WAREHOUSE concept. If the company mine line pvt. Ltd. open warehouses or take a warehouse in a rental basis around those places where they have good prospective customer’s like-Bhubaneswar, kottagudem, singarauli, dhanbad etc.  Characteristics of three warehouses:- Private Public Contract Investment High None Very little Flexibility in Material handling, Location Location storage & throughput planning Cost per unit stored Inversely related to Low Inversely related to volumes volumes Level of controls High Low Medium
  • 27. Adequacy of goods High Low High stored Risk Due to change in Minimal Minimal market demand is the best option for mine line pvt. Limited to reducing their transportation costs. Because there are few reasons behind it. They are following:- • These are the product specific warehouse facilities acquired for use for a specific period against fixed charges. • A contract warehouse can provide the benefits of both private and public warehouses. The resources such as labor, material handling equipment, storage arrangement, and communication equipment can be used on sharing basis with depositors from the same industry to economize on operating cost. The company mine line pvt. Limited are basically deals with the bulk goods. they are making the flame proof equipments. in that case contract warehouse is the best option for them. not only that but also in that case investment costs is is also very low, Adequacy of goods stored is very high etc.  Designing a Warehousing System:-
  • 28. In designing a warehousing system, the following basic questions relating to this flow become significant. How many warehouses should we have? Where should we locate them? What should be the size or capacity of each of them? 1. How many warehouses should we have? The cost of warehousing is directly proportional to the number of warehouses, while the transportation cost goes down with an increase in warehouse numbers as shown: Total costs Warehousing Cost Transportation No. of Warehouses 2. Where should we locate them? Quantitative techniques for warehouse site selection:  For Single Depot Location-
  • 29. Center of Gravity of Area Model  Center of Gravity of Load Model  Center of Gravity of Tones-Kilometers Model 1. for Single Depot Location- Center of Gravity of Area Model- A map of marketing areas may be drawn and a sheet representing the area may be balanced. The point where the sheet gets balanced is the site for warehouse location. This point is expected to be at minimum average distance from all the locations in the area. Quantitative techniques for warehouse site selection: This may be illustrated visually by imagining a sheet having holes representing the customer locations and their demand load of annual purchases. Weights are hung on each hole in proportion to the demand load. The points at which the model sheet gets balanced gives the center of weights. This model takes into consideration both loads and distances to arrive at the optimum transportation cost. The final solution is obtained after applying trail and error methods several times. 2. for Multiple Depot Location-  For planning the chain of warehouse the management will have to do a cost-benefit analysis.  The factors influencing a decision on multiple warehouses locations are: Market Size  Area Coverage by each warehouse
  • 30.  Product type  Demand pattern- continuous or seasonal  Customer service level Mine line can set their own warehouse or take the warehouse as a contract basis like that:- ANDAMARRI(DC) ANDHRAPRADESH BELLAMPALLI(DC) RAMAGUNDEM(DC) (WAREHOUSE IN BHOOPALPALLY) SINGARAULI(DC) KOTTAGUDEM(DC) YELLANDA(DC) At first open or borrow a warehouse in Bhoopalpaly at andhrapradesh and then open few spoke s or distribution channel in different places in andhrapradesh where their demand of the product is very high. Also should follow the same plan to reduce the transportation costs in the case of madhyapradesh, Jharkhand. Like that:-
  • 31. Annupur (dc) Sohagpur (dc) Baikhanthapur (dc) Madhyapradesh(w arehouse in bilaspur) Chirimiri (dc) Karba (dc) Bisrampur (dc) In the case of Jharkhand company follow the same rule, at first take the warehouse in dhanbad and open spoke or distribution channel in different places in jharkhand.like that:- EKKRA, BCCL(DC) JHARKHAND BOKARO (DC) (WAREHOUSE IN W.B & BIHAR (DC) DHANBAD)
  • 32. DATA COLLECTION Data collection is an important part of my project. Because according to company’s concern I have to find out the logistics companies those have cheaper rate and offering various transportation mode as well as facilities. in this project I need to find out a way through that company can reduce their transportation costs and also with the help of the research report they can developed their transportation system. has why I have lots of data from the different logistics companies in Kolkata those company can be help the Mine line pvt. Ltd. and assist them regarding their logistics system and which is really effective for reducing their transportation costs’ have collected data from those following company regarding their charges, which kind of transportation mode they generally used, what kind of facilities they are providing etc.the companies are- Cpmc Relocation & Logistics Pvt Ltd Strand Bank Rd Kolkata 033 4021 9000 Inland Road Transport (P) Ltd (09910589358)-Behala., 265, Pen Banerjee Road, Parnasree, (09910589358) Kolkata 08929 516784 Domestic Packers Movers Kolkata Poddar Court, 18, Rabindra Sarani, Kolkata, WB 033 2225 3503

  • 35. SWOT ANALYSIS OF THE LOGISTICS SYSTEM OF THE COMPANY  STREANGTH:- Basically company is following a simple transportation network. Generally they go through the point –to-point transportation network. Which is safe for transportation of bulky goods than the others networks. Loading & unloading is happened in between the point of starting from point of destination. That is less chance for wastages of goods. Also mine lone pvt. Limited go through the with the transporting agencies like-Raj transporting agency. They are transporting their goods from production house to destination place with the help of transporting agencies. This is smart way ti cost cutting of transportation. It is a way to smooth transporting process without any interruption. They have a strong point that is the effective utilization of transporting agencies because type’s transportation agencies are very responsible to taking the order and delivery the goods timely and safely to the customers.  WEAKNESS:- The company mine line pvt. Limited has also few weak points in the context of logistics. Only because of that they are paying huge money per year for their transportation. Previous year company has near about twenty laks which is should not be paid .this problem has created only because of their using the point-to-point network.ots a big weak point for them. Point-to-point network quit common for long distance hauls on the national highway. in this case point of origin & point of destination are fixed. Complete truck loading is assured for both ways.  OPPORTUNITY:-
  • 36. Mining is an important part of every economy. In a world that is already facing shortages of some of the important minerals and metals like petroleum and coal, the demand for such products is only bound to increase with time. Meeting those demands will be a challenge for the mining and minerals industry worldwide. With the increasing efforts in R&D and technological innovations, the mining and minerals industry has developed huge Human resource requirements. There is already a shortage of skilled workforce throughout the world. Developments are taking place rapidly and many companies in this sector are expanding their operations and are working on new projects like the refinery being constructed by Reliance Industries Limited in Jamnagar. Also Bharat Petroleum is conducting R&D For value added products and alternate fuels. So to conclude, it can be said that mining and minerals sector has a bright future, be it in terms of employment or technology. There are few reasons behind good future and prospect of the modern mining industry in India as well as others countries .they are following:- 1. India’s Variety and Abundance of Resources- Speaking only about identified reserves, India has the fourth-largest coal reserves in the world and significant reserves of bauxite, titanium ore, chromites, diamonds, and limestone. Gold, copper, zinc and uranium reserves have also been identified, though in a more limited volume. In terms of production, India ranks 3rd in production of coal & lignite (80% of the mines in India are coal mines), 2nd in barites, 4th in iron ore, 5th in bauxite, and 7th in manganese ore. 2. Recent Discovery- “India has, till date, explored only 7-9% of the mineral resources as against almost 100% geophysical and geochemical surveys in countries such as Australia”. This was revealed in September 2011 in a report titled Opportunities “launched by Ernst & Young at a conference organized by the Federation of Indian Mineral Industries in Bangalore.Metals price and the high level of dependency of the country for gold urge India to enter in a more comprehensive
  • 37. exploration of the potential resources of the country. Recent discoveries had shown how large this potential might be. 3. India’s Long History of Mining- India’s long history of mining, dated back to the first millennium BC with linkages to the Indus Valley Civilization, demonstrates the geological potential of the country and explains its strong mining tradition. Prestigious mining schools, often established by the British, trains highly qualified scientific and mining engineering professionals. 4. A Highly Qualified Scientific and Mining Engineering Community- The choice 4.f India as the host country for the 10th International Symposium on Rock Fragmentation by Blasting (New Delhi, November 2012) is enough to demonstrate the high respect the Indian scientific community is held by the worldwide experts in that field. The Fragblast Symposia represents the most important event in disseminating the latest advances in the science and technology of rock fragmentation by blasting and other related means. “The first symposium was held in Sweden in 1983 and since then it has been convened at intervals of 3 - 4 years at different locations around the world. These locations, selected standing International Committee from among several competing submissions, are chosen on the basis of prominence of mining activities and R&D initiatives of the host country. 5. Strategic Location for Export- India’s geographical location makes the country a perfect hub for raw materials or metals exportation to both the developed European markets and the fast-developing Asian markets. Iron ore, steel and aluminum are massively exported to China, UE and Japan. Roughly, 50% of the steel produced in India is exported, and 50% of this total is exported to China. 6. Strong Internal Demand Especially For Coal and Gold-
  • 38. India maintained a spectacular growth for the last year and might keep on booming at least until 2030. In order to fuel that development, Indian demand for metals and minerals will continue to grow accordingly. According to a 2010 report from the McKinsey Global Institute “700 to 900 million square meters of commercial and residential space needs to be built – or a new Chicago every year (…) 2,5 billion square meters of roads will have to be paved, 20 times the capacity added in the past decade (…) [and] 7400 kilometers of metros and subways will need to be constructed, 20 times the capacity added in the past decade “The new gold discoveries will also be easily absorbed by the internal demand. India is and will remain for long, the world's largest consumer of gold and the world’s largest gold jewelry market. 7. Strong Anti-Corruption and Fight against Illegal Mining Initiatives- “Known for corruption in its political, regulatory, and legal systems, India needs to take this issue head-on by instituting new controls, as soon as possible, as corruption continues to damage its markets (…) While the government struggles to modernize the bureaucracy and corruption is a challenge that must be overcome.” Potential corruption opportunities arise, inter alia, during the license attribution process. Obtaining a license by corrupting an official means you are illegally exploiting the ore. Corruption leading to faulty undervaluation of exported quantities for tax and royalties avoidance purpose has also been recently reported to be common practice in India. Since 2006, India set an example of an efficient and pro-active fighting policy against illegal mining and corruption. This is a long-term policy but appointing the retired tough independent Supreme Court Judge N. Santos Hedge as Lokayukta (Ombudsman) of Karnataka state has been a strong political sign. He soon unveiled a massive illegal iron ore mining involving some of the richest families and mighty politicians of the country. As a first outcome of this fighting policy, the famous eddy’s where sent to jail and actions have been announced against 617 officials, including Ministers. Upholding this policy might improve India’s ranking and hopefully contribute to attract additional national and foreign investments.
  • 39. NOW A DAYS INCREASING THE DEMAND OF FLAMEPROOF ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENTS BECAUSE MOST OF THE MINING COMPANIES ARE ASKING FOR THESE TYPES OF EQUEPMENTS TO PREVENT THE EXPLOSION.NOW OFTEN EXPLOSION IS HAPPENING UNDER THE GROPUND DUE TO VARIOUS CAUSES AND MINING COMPANIES ARE SUFFERING REGARDING THESE KIND OF ACCIDENT NOT ONLY THAT BUT ALSO NUMBER OF PEOPLE THOSE ARE WORKING IN UNDERGROUND THOSE ARE DYING DUE TO THESE KIND OF EXPLOSIONS.NUMBERS OF FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC COMPANIES AREV GOING TO OPEN THEIR NEW BRANCHES IN THE EASTERN ZONE LIKE JHARKHABD,ORISSA,BIHAR ETC.THE MINING COMPANIES THOSE ARE BELONGS TO THESE STATES WOULD BE GOOD PROSPECTS FOR MINE LINE PRIVATE LIMITED.  THREATS:- Increasing the oil prices Unstable world economy Market competition Natural disaster like-Global worming

Like an example in the year of 2006 oil price was rs.3 per litr. Then in the year of 2008 oil price increased up to rs.4 per ltr. In 2010 the price was rs.4.5 per ltr. And this year it is grow up to rs.7 per ltr.
  • 46. FINDINGS 1. By analyzing the survey we can say that approximately increasing the transportation costs is one of the main barriers of company’s yearly turnover. 2. Apart from those area like Jharkhand,Orissa, andhrapradesh, madhyapradesh, bihar, China, France etc number of states and area like uttarpradesh, gujrat, maharastra etc would very prospective customers carrying area for the company. 3. They are generally uses the road as a transportation mode but if they are going for the air as well as water then it might be very useful for their logistics system. 4. In the case of bulky goods transportation mine line is used to 10 wheeler and small truck. For that they are paying very high amount of money because in that case need number of trucks for transporting huge electrical equipments at a time. But if they transporting their goods through the big container then it might be cheaper than previous. 5. To avoid the increasing rate of oil price they can utilize the vehicle those are running with the help of natural gases.
  • 47. CONCLUSION The project on procurement of goods & SWOT analysis of the logistics system of the company Mine line pvt. Ltd. gives the deep understanding of all the aspect of corporate logistics system, which covers all the key area of transportation along with all the glamour features such as warehousing facilities, ambience, and staff with the apt attitude to provide all the comfort required by the clients at a right time. I have tried my level best to cover all the aspect of the logistics system of the company Mine line pvt. Ltd. offices along with the competitor’s analysis of the logistical point of view. In spite of some limitations, the project is completed covering the detail study of corporate logistics. Really, this project was like a challenge for me, I have accepted and completed with the best of our efforts, knowledge and skills. The study gives some of the conclusion, which is follows:  Pure it established a strong position and how the company Mine line pvt. Ltd. is doing their transportation in market.  Mine line brand doing well in the market of modern mining.  SAIT mining is the greatest brand in France (Europe) brand so it is greatest strength in the business.  There is a huge competition in mining sector. .  Eventually I conclude by saying that I fell top of the world when I think about my association which is having their business not only with the country but also having their business outside the country with this brand.
  • 48. It makes me feel top of the world when I say that I have worked with Mine line Private Limited. LEARNING FROM SIP This is the second time I have visited a compamy.but it’s a first time I was working throughout six weeks in an industry’s .I made a full project report regarding company’s logistics system. That was a great experience for me. Also I worked with my industrial mentor who is the logistical head of the company have learned lots of thing from him corporate logistics and how company use this system for transporting the goods. Also i have learned till now which I studied throughout one year about logistics in my pgdm-IB course how this is applied in practical world. This is the one of the most important learning from sip. Through these types of learning I can easily understand my own subject very well. Because practical knowledge is always more effective than bookish knowledge. These types of industrial experience will obviously help my future career.
