At the end of the lesson, at least 75% of the students must be able to:
1. Define the elements of a short story;
2. Determine the elements in a story;
3. Enhance the receptive skill in reading through scanning a reading selection.

B. Motivation
Game Title: 4 Pics 1 Word (3 items)
Direction: Identify each word based on the 4 given pictures.
 The words are as follows:
 Setting
 Character
 Conflict
 Paste the answers on the board.
C. Lesson Proper
1. Introduction of the topic.
 Ask students to recall what a short story is.
 Present a video clip about the elements of a short story.
2. Discuss the elements of a short story.
Setting - the time and place in which a story takes place.
Character – the people, animals or creatures in a story.
Kinds of Character:
 Protagonist - The main character to whom or around whose
life the action of the story happens.
 Antagonist - The character that oppose the protagonist.
Conflict - a problem or struggle between two people, things or ideas.
Kinds of Conflict:
 Man vs. Man - (problem with another character)
 Man vs. Nature - (problem with force of nature)
 Man vs. Society - (problem with the laws or beliefs of a
group)
 Man vs. Self – (problem with ideas of right and wrong,
physical limitations, etc.)
D. Application
 Present a video clip.
 Let the students determine the elements based on the story by asking
them the following questions:
a) What can you say about the story?
b) Where is the setting in the story?
c) Who are the characters?
d) What is the conflict in the story?
E. Generalization
 Let the students recap the different elements of a short story.
 Ask them the following questions:
a) Have you experienced retelling your favourite movie or
story to your friends?
b) What did you do so you can able to retell the story?
c) Why do you think it is important to know those
elements?
d) What can you get in reading a short story?
Just like retelling your favourite movie or story, determining the elements of a
story is important in order to understand and know what is happening
throughout the story. This will help you become more involved and enjoy in
the reading and make it seem like you are a part of the story.
F. Evaluation
 Distribute to the students the copies of the story “Guno and Koyo”.

After having read the story “Guno and Koyo”, complete the chart below
on the elements of a story.

Motivation Game Title: 4 Pics 1 Word (3 items) Direction: Identify each word based on the 4 given pictures.  The words are as follows:  Setting  Character  Conflict  Paste the answers on the board. C. Lesson Proper 1. Introduction of the topic.  Ask students to recall what a short story is.  Present a video clip about the elements of a short story. 2. Discuss the elements of a short story. Setting - the time and place in which a story takes place. Character – the people, animals or creatures in a story. Kinds of Character:  Protagonist - The main character to whom or around whose life the action of the story happens.  Antagonist - The character that oppose the protagonist. Conflict - a problem or struggle between two people, things or ideas. Kinds of Conflict:  Man vs. Man - (problem with another character)  Man vs. Nature - (problem with force of nature)  Man vs. Society - (problem with the laws or beliefs of a group)  Man vs. Self – (problem with ideas of right and wrong, physical limitations, etc.) D. Application  Present a video clip.  Let the students determine the elements based on the story by asking them the following questions: a) What can you say about the story? b) Where is the setting in the story?

Generalization  Let the students recap the different elements of a short story.  Ask them the following questions: a) Have you experienced retelling your favourite movie or story to your friends? b) What did you do so you can able to retell the story? c) Why do you think it is important to know those elements? d) What can you get in reading a short story? Just like retelling your favourite movie or story, determining the elements of a story is important in order to understand and know what is happening throughout the story. This will help you become more involved and enjoy in the reading and make it seem like you are a part of the story. F. Evaluation  Distribute to the students the copies of the story “Guno and Koyo”.
