3. The Grand Hotel The Grand Hotel has a record of having the longest porch in the USA. Its porch is 660 feet. It is one of the most popular places to stay in the upper peninsula. It has 385 rooms. None of them are the same.
4. The Lilac Festival Lilac Festival The Lilac festival is held on Mackinaw island on June 6 th through June 15 th . Every year there is a lilac festival queen which is picked from the mackinaw island public school. Celebrating the collection of Mackinaws lilac festival began in 1949. The lilac grand parade is the finale of the festival and is held on Sunday June 4 th at 4:00 p.m. It is one of the most attended events in Mackinaw.
5. Mackinaw Bridge The Mackinaw Bridge is currently the third longest bridge in the world. It is 26,372 ft in length. The roadway is currently 200 feet above water level. If the wind is blowing very hard and depending on the temperature the bridge could move up to 35 feet to the east or west. The weight of the cars slowly moves the bridge back into place.
6. Thunder falls is a water park in Mackinaw that is like Michigan Adventures in Muskegon . It is the newest attraction in Mackinaw. It is one of the most popular water parks in Mackinaw for family entertainment. Some of the rides are tube, body, and speed slides, Thunder lake, Kick-back creek, and Grizzly woods, Duck-in-run and Thunder Grub. There is a lot of fun in Thunder Falls. Thunder Falls
7. Mackinac old point Lighthouse The Mackinac old point lighthouse is 65 years old. It has kept sailors safe at sea for that long. It was established in 1889. it is approximately 58 feet (five stories) from the ground to the lightning rod. The Mackinac old point lighthouse is visible from 16 miles away.
8. Mackinaw Island fudge is a main interest in visitors. The most popular flavors of the Fudge is Chocolate Chocolate Walnut and Chocolate Peanut Butter along with Maple Pecan. All the fudge stores also carry marshmallow Artisans. Chocolate Pecan , Chocolate , Chocolate Peanut Butter, Chocolate Walnut, Peanut Butter Pecan, Peanut Butter , Old Fashioned Vanilla, Vanilla Pecan , Maple Pecan, Maple are the traditional flavors of fudge
9. Fort Mackinac Fort Mackinac was constructed during the American Revolution. It was used as an imposing sentinel in the Straits of Mackinaw for 115 years. There are a lot of things to do there. Outside there is a show performed by 1800 soldier interpreters. The newest exhibit in Fort Mackinac is the 19 th century medicine.
10. Arch Rock Arch Rock is on Mackinaw Island. It is a natural Limestone formation. Arch rock is 50 feet in span. It also rises to a height of 149 feet above the clear blue water of the Straits of mackinaw. The Indian legend of the Arch Rock was that it was the gateway to Gitchie Manitou the god of all Indians.
11. Fort Holmes Fort Holmes is a redoubt that is located on the highest point of Mackinaw Island. It was built in 1812 by British forces of the war in 1812. It was supposed to defend the adjacent fort Mackinac from being attacked by the U.S. Army. The British named the redoubt Fort George. The Americans took over Fort George in 1815.
12. Sunset Rock Sunset Rock is on the west side of mackinaw. It is located near Stonecliff. From the top of Sunset Rock you can see a wonderful view of the Mackinaw Bridge and Lake Huron. The sunsets in mackinaw are very beautiful. You can enjoy them in the perfect spot on top of Sunset rock.
13. Mill Creek Mill creek was constructed in the 1780’s. It is one of the first industrial sites in the Great lakes. The mill has a 18 th century water powered sawmill and 625 wooded acres. It also has nature trails and forest management displays. It is a wonderful place to visit.
14. Directions in Mackinaw The directions in Mackinaw are VERY confusing. If you were to ask directions you might get lost. This picture shows only part of what signs look like in Mackinaw. Downtown has about 10 times as many signs. So you may want to have a local take you to the place you want to go.
15. Kite Festival The Kite Festival is annual. It is held on June 21 st and 22 nd . It is even free to participate. You can meet new friends and relax. People from all over the Midwest come to enjoy mackinaws annual Kite Festival.
