IALT: Explain the phenomenon of tides (why they occur) and identify the
    different types of tides
    IASW: I can…
Create a PowerPoint explaining why tides happen and give a brief
explanation of each type of tide (in my own words).
Create a visual diagram showing what the earth looks like during high
    an d low tide.
Tides are the periodic rise and fall of the ocean waters.
They are caused by the gravitational pulls of the Moon and
Sun, as well as the rotation of the Earth. Winds and
currents move the surface water causing waves. tides are
most likely caused by the gravitational pull and shifting of
the moon causing all oceans, creeks, lakes, to form tides
and pull the water back and forth.
A Neap Tide is between a high tide and low tide. During the
moon's quarter phases the sun and moon work at right angles,
causing the bulges to cancel each other. The result is a smaller
difference between high and low tides and is known as a neap
tide. Neap tides are especially weak tides.
When the moon is full or new, the gravitational pull of the
moon and sun are combined. At these times, the high tides
are very high and the low tides are very low. This is known
as a spring high tide. Spring tides are especially strong
tides (they do not have anything to do with the season
Spring). They occur when the Earth, the Sun, and the
Moon are in a line. The gravitational forces of the Moon
and the Sun both contribute to the tides. Spring tides
occur during the full moon and the new moon.
Spring tides are higher than normal tides.
The high and low tide are caused by the gravitational pulls
between the earth and the moon. However, the source of
the real effect takes some explaining to understand. The
incorrect way of thinking is that the moon attracts all the
water to itself, therefore causing a high tide on the side of
earth close to the moon, and a low tide on the side far from
the moon. However, if this was the case, there would be a
high tide once per day. But there are TWO high tides a day.
The reason is, the part of the earth both AWAY from the
moon, and CLOSE to the moon BOTH get high tides
What words mean
 Periodic: occurring or appearing at regular intervals
 Gravitational: the force of attraction between any two
  masses.
 Phase: a stage in a process of change
 Contribute: to give
