Google Earth is a geographic browser that allows users to view satellite imagery and geospatial data of Earth. It displays satellite images of varying resolution, from 15 meters up to half a meter, depending on the area. Users can explore locations through interactive 3D viewing and fly anywhere on Earth. Google Earth also allows users to view and share user-generated geospatial data and location-specific information through KML files. It has applications in various fields like education, telecommunications network planning, and commercial purposes like site research.

The basic version of the software is freely available on Google's web
site for download.
KML files are specially formatted files for Google Earth that contains
data to allow them to be viewed in the Google Earth desktop
application.
With Google Earth you can now download KML files from the
Geocaching.com web site. There are two types of KML files
available:

Google Earth displays satellite images of
varying resolution of the Earth's surface,
allowing users to visually see things like
houses and cars from a bird's eye view. The
degree of resolution available is based
somewhat on the points of interest, but most
land (except for some islands) is covered in
at least 15 meters of resolution

45. For Educators
Google Earth, Google's satellite imagery-based mapping
product puts the whole world on a student's computer. It
enables users to "fly" from space to street level to find
geographic information and explore places around the
world. Like a video game and a search engine rolled into
one, Earth is basically a 3D model of the entire planet that
lets you grab, spin and zoom down into any place on Earth.
Now, with Google Earth 4.3, you can tour distant cities with
Google StreetView, view photo-realistic 3D buildings, and
even show your students sunset around the world with the
new Sunlight feature.
46. In Pictures: The Strangest Sights in Go
Earth
Ever since Google first let people
scour the planet from the comfort of
their computers through the Google
Earth software program, fans have
been on a virtual scavenger hunt from
the North Pole to the South Pole
looking for anything interesting,
unusual, or unexplained. From
shipwrecks to crop circles, from ads
big enough to be read from space to a
giant pink bunny nearly the size of a
football field, we've collected just a
little of the odd and spectacular
sights. You can see the same images
in Google Maps by clicking the links
we provide--but you'll get a better
view by copying the coordinates in
parentheses after each link and
pasting them into Google Earth's 'Fly
To' box. We've also created a file of
Placemarks that includes all of these
sights and more; you can download it
and open it with Google Earth. Enjoy
the trip! Artwork: Chip Taylor
