Professional associations seek to further a particular profession through representing members' interests and protecting the public interest. They maintain standards in their field through activities like developing educational programs, certifying professionals, publishing research, and advising on legislation. Library professional associations specifically aim to promote the profession through conferences, training, publications, developing standards, and advising the government to advocate for libraries and their role in society.
