•Before The war, Navajo Indians were forced to go to school and learn
the English language.
• They were constantly insulted and were told to forget their native
language.
• They had to shave their traditionally long hair and were put in boring
shirts that did not meet the native customs.

3. During WWII
• When the war started, Japanese Decoders kept on decoding U.S. codes.
• Then they discovered that the language of Navajo was impossible to decode.
• The U.S. Marines started recruiting Navajo Indians who were fluent in English and
Navajo.
• They went through standard marine training and then learned to become code
talkers.
• They were put out in the thick of battle to decode secret messages that helped the
U.S. in battles with the Japanese.
4. The end of WWII
• The Navajo used codes to help end the war.
• They were a part of the “Island Hopping” technique. They would have had to invade
Japan, but the U.S.A. decided to send an atom bomb at Hiroshima and another
Japanese city instead.
• This killed thousands of Japanese people, but saved hundreds of American lives.
