Out of 7 QC tools cause and effect diagram helps to find the potential causes of an effect. An effect may be good or bad. With help of brainstorming again and again cause and effect diagram constructed for an effect and its possible causes. This activity is going on until the root cause find out. The tools is developed by Prof. Kaoru Ishikawa, therefore the tool is also named as Ishikawa diagram. Cause and Effect diagram is also named as Fishbone diagram due to its structure. The structure of cause and effect diagram is seems like the skeleton of a fish. The structure of the cause and effect diagram is made by arrows. In which the central arrow represent the effect at its head. The rest arrows are pointing toward the central arrow and representing the main causes. At any stage the main cause is considered as effect so that its possible causes are further being found. The main causes are defined as the Man, Material, Method, Machine, Money and Environment. The sub causes of main cause are representing by more arrows pointing towards the main cause.

Introduction Cause and Effect diagram is one of the most important tool out of seven quality tools. It is also called Ishikawa diagram named after famous quality guru Dr. Kaoru Ishikawa who is known as the father of “Quality Control Circle (QCC)”

Shape of C&E Diagram The cause and effect diagram is the structure of arrows and the shape so formed is seems like a fish bones structure hence because of its structure it is called fishbone diagram.
A main arrow is placed at the center and at the arrow head the effect is written.

An effect is the resultant of interaction of man, method, material, money, machine and environment. Henceforth these are considered as the main causes of any effect. The effect may be good or bad The side arrows like fins of the fish added to this main arrow represent the causes of the effect.

Brainstorming Brainstorming session is the team meeting of the concerned persons to find the most relevant causes of the effect or problem. A Team leader is chosen by the team. Everyone is open to share his views about the effect and its causes. Every idea is important After collection of ideas, most relevant causes are filtered.

Now, cause and effect diagram is prepared with relevant causes by team leader. At any stage of time a cause may be the effect of some other causes and hence the brainstorming session is going on until the problem get resolve completely.
